There’s something distinctively peculiar about little towns. About their alleged serenity and peaceful way of living. About their closed-off shops and their faded-out road signs and billboards left behind simply because no one bothered to replace them. About the undeniable bonds existing between the native-borns and the ex ostracization of anyone that threatened those bonds, or really anyone different. About their so-called hospitality that turns into vicious, violent hatred once that quiet, “peaceful” way of living is put at risk.

Yoongi is bound to feel intrigued, as he drives by the road sign that welcomes him into such a small town. Xefoto its name. Derived from the Greek word for “clearing”, as it was one of the first towns that took in supernatural beings -or magicals if you prefer a different term- and let them build shelter in the clearing in the woods. Back when humans and magicals didn’t get along too well, so their new home had to be founded away from the outskirts of the human town. But as centuries went by, the two small establishments began growing and spreading, until the borders meshed together and humans and magicals learned to live side-by-side.

Yoongi has done his research before moving here. He may have a house he can settle in already, seeing as the Min Vampire Clan was one of the first vampire families to live in Xefoto, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be welcomed here.

Trees pass him by as his eyes never stray from the road, his grip on the steering wheel tight as he taps his fingers on the leather impatiently.

If his research is correct, he just transferred to one of the most prestigious universities for magicals. The “Xefoto University of Magical Arts”, or Xuma for short, has been around almost as long as the town has existed. People Yoongi only ever dreamt of meeting have studied here and the path he’s about to take is only promising in its entirety.

Then why does he feel as if he’s about to lose control of his own life?

His heart thumps once against his chest as he finally drives into town, the gloomy skies seeming like an appropriate welcome.

Okay, maybe this wasn’t exactly the welcoming he had expected.

Yoongi was ready for apathy for the rest of the student body, even some suspicious glances thrown his way, given he’s an outsider infiltrating their little town’s haven. Instead, from the moment he stepped foot into the academy castle, he’s met with students approaching him to know his name, to befriend him, to know more about him. Girls and boys alike are flooding his path, overly friendly smiles, and kind gestures to the point of feeling overwhelming and Yoongi can't help but hate this sudden interest in him.

He expected -wished even- to be left alone, not this welcoming committee of students following him like a shadow everywhere he goes.

There hasn’t been a course he’s been to today without someone approaching him, interested in getting to know him but it’s not something he welcomes. Most of those students, -or professors in some cases-, are after him only because he’s the new student. Something entirely foreign and simultaneously so much fascinating to people that have known nothing more than what’s inside the premises of their little town. No one is really interested in him as a person and so Yoongi finds all those interactions irritating and weird.

But there is one person that managed to intrigue him.

There’s this fae boy, Jimin. He approaches Yoongi throughout the day.

Although his method might seem to some… unconventional.

Most people that approach Yoongi are really excited to get to meet him. Big, wide smiles, so forceful they almost look hurtful, eyes swimming with excitement and overall people practically throwing themselves at his feet. Although Jimin seems dormant. No skippiness in his steps, no trembling excitement or flashing smiles, no eagerness to get close to him. Instead, a frown masks the fae boy’s features every time he nears the dark-haired vampire boy, slow, dragging steps, as if unwilling to move, as he points Yoongi to the next class or the cafeteria. His words always come out as exasperated grumbles. Yoongi at one point thought the boy was cursing at him, only to realize he was just informing him about lunch hours.

Jimin helps out Yoongi through the school grounds and routine but it seems like the fae is doing it almost by force.

The notion that this might be a prank has passed Yoongi’s mind, but to be honest, Jimin’s tips have proven to be helpful, so Yoongi can’t help but wonder about the blond boy.

Hence, why, when he spots the man in the dining hall, he wastes no time in taking the empty seat next to him.

Jimin’s eyes almost bulge out of their sockets as he regards the vampire sitting nonchalantly beside him. Yoongi doesn’t seem like he pays attention to Jimin as he settles down and goes through his lunch, though his ears are attuned to the fae’s reactions, waiting for the moment the younger man speaks up.

Jimin closes his agape mouth and swallows nervously.

“What are you doing here?”

Yoongi almost laughs at the accusatory tone, finding himself enjoying teasing the other boy, but nonetheless, he remains serious.

“Having lunch?” he cocks an eyebrow.

Jimin huffs in annoyance. “No, yeah, I know, I mean…” he takes an exasperated breath, “Why here?”

“Because it’s the dining hall?” Yoongi barely manages to conceal his laughter as Jimin’s ears grow red.

“I- ugh! I meant why next to me?!” he exclaims out loud, irritation shimmering in his words, though he looks more like a child that’s just been denied ice cream. A slight glimmer appears behind Jimin, at the place where his wings are supposed to be, threatening to reveal themselves.

Yoongi lets out a breath, deciding that was enough teasing.

“Well, to be frank, it feels like you don't particularly like me and yet you still help me around. Couldn’t help but feel curious…” he comments before taking a bite of his medium-rare steak.

Jimin once again remains speechless as he regards the other boy, suddenly feeling ashamed of his behavior. His eyes fall to his lap, biting his lip as he ponders on his answer.

“I… I’m sorry if I made you feel unwelcome, it wasn’t my intention, honestly…” he responds, for once no sign of annoyance in his features, only remorse, and guilt.

“Don’t worry about it. Actually, it was a nice change from being treated like the town’s local rockstar,” Yoongi chuckles, tone casual as Jimin visibly relaxes next to him.

“Oh, yeah, the whole town’s been buzzing since they learned about the new vampire transfer…” Jimin comments, finally seeming to be comfortable around Yoongi’s presence.

“But why?” Yoongi’s voice is full of confusion, not at all understanding why is everyone so enticed by him.

“Well I think being a Min and a vampire might have tipped the scale…” the fae boy says as-a-matter-of-a-factly.

Yoongi’s unimpressed stare makes Jimin reconsider.

“Ah, right… You’re new here…”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Jimin rolls his eyes before he speaks again.

“Well, the fact that you belong to one of the oldest vampire families in the world should be enough but this town…”, he pauses, clearly struggling to find a way to put this, “...it’s a little different from other magical colonies…” Jimin begins to explain and Yoongi puts his food aside in favor of something much more interesting.

“I’m sure you’re aware of how the universal hierarchy of magicals works at the rest of the world. At the bottom there are the werewolves, -due to their lack of self-control once they transform-, then demons, then shapeshifters, then mermaids, fae, elves, vampires and on the top there are sirens and… witches,” he speaks the last word in a hushed whisper, something that confuses Yoongi, “due to each species’ control of their respective magic. But here…” the fae boy shakes his head in thought, “the hierarchy is a bit different…”

Yoongi thinks it’s safe to say his attention has been captured.

“You see, 11 years ago an accident happened that killed almost half the town, humans and supernatural beings alike…” Jimin’s voice now becomes quiet, eyes wary as they look around to make sure no one else is listening.

“There was a fire, started right at the witch coven of Xefoto and it spread through the entire town. If it wasn’t for the faes’ help the whole town would have gone down in flames. And even though many people were killed and injured, witches were entirely erased. Only one witch survived and well… it’s pretty much common knowledge between the locals that she set those fires…” Jimin concludes but Yoongi isn’t easily convinced.

“But why? It makes no sense for her to wipe out her entire coven…” he interjects but Jimin simply shrugs.

“No one knows. Rumor has it she was drunk for power and wiped her peers out so she could act freely without her coven interjecting her every decision. Everyone suspects it’s her but some of the evidence was destroyed so she was never caught. Others say she’s cursed…” Jimin responds with wide eyes and Yoongi has an inkling Jimin is one of those people.

But the fae boy continues, undisturbed. “And well… The hierarchy changed after that. Since practical magic was the one that caused everything, it is kind of frowned upon to practice the art of it since most times it’s completely uncontrollable. Natural magic, on the other hand, is completely fine, like faes’, elves’ and demons’. Witches, -or well just this one witch-, is at the bottom of the hierarchy tower.”

Yoongi scrunches his eyebrows. “Even bellow werewolves?” he finds that hard to believe.

But Jimin nods. And Yoongi can’t help but wonder how awful this woman’s life must be. Bellow werewolves? That shit’s hard.

Jimin continues. “So witches dropped and since sirens also use practical magic, they got dragged along with them. Now they’re on the same level as mermaids,” Yoongi shudders at the mere thought. A prideful and vengeful being like a siren being cramped up with mermaids? That can’t be good.

“Fae also rose up due to the help they provided and now rest at the top,” the blond boy explains somewhat remorseful before he keeps going, “... along with vampires.”

Yoongi lets out a sound of understanding at that. That’s why everyone was treating him like that.

“Okay, now everything makes a bit more sense…” he admits, before stealing a glance at Jimin.

“And I guess it explains your behavior towards me, too.”

Jimin's head snaps up, eyes wide with alarm.

“You were forced into befriending me, weren’t you?” Yoongi asks insightfully and Jimin’s ears redden once more.

“I’m sorry. My parents thought it’d be great for our family if I were to become your friend… we may be fae but… we’re not the most prestigious family there is. Not even close…” Jimin sounds resigned as if already expecting the vampire boy to be offended but this. But Yoongi can only nod in agreement.

He knows a thing or two about family expectations.

He sighs before pushing his tray aside, done with his food and he stands up. “So, where does the course for “interspecies rights” take place?” Yoongi asks nonchalantly, even though the boy already knows the way to said classroom. He can’t help but feel a certain level of sympathy towards the fae boy, even if Jimin approached him with a certain agenda in mind.

Jimin looks at Yoongi with disbelief. “I- I’m sorry?”

The vampire turns to look at him with no sign of malice in his eyes. “You’re my tour guide, aren’t you? I expect you to show me around, not just the university but the town as well,” Yoongi explains and Jimin can’t help but look at the boy with gratitude. Then the blond boy stands up as well.

“Follow me.”

As Jimin walks Yoongi through the academy grounds, the vampire gets to know a little bit more about the quiet fae boy.

Jimin is one year younger, at 22, born and raised at Xefoto but his family, -being one of the few that settled years after the settlement was formed-, isn’t exactly prestigious among their peers. Actually, Jimin’s family, the Parks, have been around no longer than 3 eons, making them almost foreigners in correlation with the other families.

The fae boy is studying to become a Bringer, the magical equivalent of a lawyer. Although Yoongi spots a healing course at the younger man’s schedule that has nothing to do with being a bringer.

But Yoongi doesn’t ask. Everyone has their secrets.

What he also learned is that Jimin has a girlfriend. Actually, scratch that, the exact word used was “betrothed”. Which came as quite a shock to say the least, as when Yoongi first met the blond boy, he thought he was gay. To be honest, though, Sua and Jimin didn’t seem to be exactly enamored with one another.

But, again, Yoongi does not ask.

Instead, he pretends to be interested in the architecture of the castle and not at all observing the slightly suspicious looks Sua is giving him.

“So,” the fae girl exclaims, voice loud and commanding, successfully interrupting whatever Jimin was about to say. The boy effectively swallows his words before deflating slightly. But then, as if it never happened, a mask of excitement takes over his features as he turns his attention to his girlfriend.

Yoongi observes the interaction with hawk-like eyes. And again he says nothing.

Sua smiles brightly before continuing. “Where are you boys planning on going next? Jimin you should show Yoongi around our town! There’s so much to see really!” the girl exclaims enthusiastically and Yoongi fights to conceal the slight frown that threatens to appear. If he had to guess, he’d say Sua supports the Parks family’s decision to force Jimin on Yoongi.

Jimin timidly nods his head before speaking up. “Ah, yes, I was hoping to show him the old town of Xefoto and then grab some drinks-”

Sua gasps excitedly. “That’s a great idea! I’ll tell you what, why don’t you go to Selkie’s Place? They serve some wonderful mashed potatoes - and I can meet you there with some friends, I’m sure you must be dying to meet new people!” she concludes with a grin and Jimin throws an apologetic smile at Yoongi.

Yoongi grinds his teeth. “Yes… dying…”

Sua doesn’t get the sarcasm and squeals before clapping her hands together. “Fantastic! Let’s say eight? Yeah, that’s perfect, we’ll meet you there!” she says excitedly before fishing her phone out of her skirt and walking away almost immediately. Too engrossed in her typing to actually say “goodbye” to the two boys.

Yoongi sends a glare to a fidgeting Jimin. “That’s your girlfriend?”

Jimin sighs. “I know she’s kind of a lot. But she’s nice once you get to know her!”

Yoongi purses his lips before shrugging, it’s not his place to comment on that. “If you say so. So, old town of Xefoto, huh?” he redirects the conversation and Jimin’s eyes gleam in excitement, as they begin walking towards the exit.

“Oh yes! It’s very picturesque, there’s this museum with historic relics and the history of the town, plus the first families that gotten here, the founding of the academy and even-” Jimin rambles on about something he’s clearly into but as Yoongi listens to him he fails to see the person to his left.

This inevitably leads into him bumping into said person, thus spreading the books they’ve been holding all over the marble floors.

He hears a sigh of resignation coming from the girl dressed in all black before she crouches down to pick up her books.

“Oh shit, I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking,” Yoongi explains, ignoring Jimin’s terrified gasp as he rushes to help by picking up the rest of the books. Only to stop when he realizes the girl has stopped as well.

And currently stares at him.

He raises his eyes at her, indignantly, not ready to deal with another person dying to get to know him.

But instead of the heart-eyes look he expects to see, he’s met with big, doe-like eyes that stare at him with unadulterated shock.

Yoongi suddenly forgets the rest of his sentence. What did he want to say anyway? Something foolish and weird for sure and with the way the girl’s eyes are boring into him he can’t help do anything but blink.

There’s something about her, he can’t quite tell. Something about the way her eyelashes flutter, about the parting of her lips as she silently gasps, the roundness of her cheeks and the crystal color of her eyes. They all leave Yoongi breathless. Like she took the air out of the room and he’s left helpless. He could swear he’s been under some sort of spell. But he knows his spells. And this isn’t one.

The girl’s hair falls right into her face and Yoongi has an itch in his fingers, from the sudden urge to reach forward and brush them away to get a better look.

But that would be weird. Definitely creepy and weird.

Then the girl’s eyes, as if suddenly remembering where they are, move to the person behind Yoongi, Jimin.

Her eyes widen even more and Yoongi swears he sees fear in them.

Fear accompanied by sadness.

That doesn’t sit well with him. As he sees the girl’s eyes moving rapidly away, he has this bad feeling growing in the middle of his chest, warning him, burning him. Like a premonition he’s certain he doesn’t want to come true.

So he speaks up.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-”

But as soon as his voice reaches her ears, the girl springs into action.

She immediately grabs her books from Yoongi’s hands before taking off instantly, not sparing the two men another glance.

Yoongi’s eyes follow her figure down the hall, speechless. Did he actually creep her out? He couldn’t tell.

The girl disappears behind the gates, hasty in her steps, not bothering to look back.

At that moment Jimin releases a breath, Yoongi only now remembering the existence of the other boy, and he sees the fae being relieved by the girl’s absence.

“What?”

Jimin’s eyes are wide with horror. “God that was close! Do you know who that was?”

Yoongi’s unimpressed stare gives Jimin his answer.

“That was her! The witch!”

Yoongi’s features scrunch up in confusion at that.

The witch? The one that’s supposed to have caused the accident?

Yoongi thought the witch was an old woman for sure. Some recluse, living far away from modern society, deep in the woods, cursing everyone that crossed her path. After all the fires happened eleven years ago.

Realization hits him and his eyes widen in mortification.

She was only a child.

His stare moves to the gates, already curious about the girl with the black dress that disappeared behind them.

1 like = 1 WIP or fic idea

From a twitter meme thread, some WIPs and fic ideas I want to get to -- eventually!

1) "Goodbye", a WIP in my "Bad Ends" series; as a clone, Prompto's lifespan is shortened, and during the World of Ruin he realizes he's not going to make it to the Dawn at the rate things are going, so he drops by Ignis's and Gladio's places to leave goodbye letters. Ignis catches him.

2) The earliest draft of what became the "Kingslayer" chapter in Cracked was an Assassin!Prompto AU that became too interesting to be part of Cracked, so I shelved it, but I want to pull it out again!

3) Speaking of Cracked, I want to expand on the Werewolf chapter, where the Kings of Lucis and their retinues are werewolf packs. Noct was planning to bring Prompto into the pack, but vampires got to him first... so now Prompto is a mortal enemy, that Noctis is sworn to kill. (It has a good end.)

4) I want to write a prequel to "Thirst", about Cor the Immortal, Vampire Hunter, breaking into the Niflheim cloning facilities to rescue baby Prompto from certain death as bait. With lots of looks at how vampires live in Gralea.

5) "A Whiter Shade of Pale" -- a Prince!Prompto AU with soulbond elements. I'm outlining it but don't have much yet.

6) I have an outline for a quarantine fic, where Noctis is safe with his dad and Gladio and Ignis in the Citadel, but Prompto is an "essential worker" and can't quarantine -- and Noctis stops getting texts from him. (I don't think I'm ready to write this one yet.)

7) Another Cracked chapter I want to exand on is "Matters of Vengeance", where instead of just escaping from Ignis, Commander Caligo turns the tables on him and takes him captive. And submits him to some Imperial experimentation involving plasmodia. Aranea rescues him, but she might not have made it in time.

8) I'd also like to expand on the superhero AU I did in Cracked, because I didn't get to talk about Prompto! In that AU, Prompto doesn't think he has a superpower, but he does: super-healing! All the clones are designed with it, to help them survive the Empire's experimentation. Prompto's just never been injured badly enough to realize that the way he gets over things quickly isn't normal.

9) There's a snippet I started writing to the prompt "a birthday wish comes true" where Prompto has to work so he misses Noct's birthday, so Noctis says, just before he blows out his candles, that he wishes Prompto didn't have to work so much.

10) I'd like to explore a "kami AU" concept, where one character is a local nature spirit or something similar, and meets another character as a child, and then they meet again as adults -- but I don't have a plot for it yet.

11) A Kidnapping story where Noctis, Ignis and Gladio tell Prompto they're going to kidnap him on his birthday and take him out for fun activities... so when Prompto is ACTUALLY kidnapped by people who think they can use him to blackmail the Prince, it takes him a while to figure out he's really in trouble.

12) I want to do a soulbond AU where the ritual that connects Noct's retinue to him involves bloodletting and magically binds their souls together in some way -- but this idea is still REAAAALLY vague and needs a lot more to flesh it out.

13) On the original fic front, I have the beginning of a story about a fae granting a woman's wish to have more time for her art by taking away the one thing that takes up the most of her time: her family.

After discovering she has the power of hypnosis, Mina is sent off by her parents to a hidden school for the gifted in Korea where she will be safe from anyone attempting to harness her powers as a weapon. There, Mina befriends eight other girls, each with extraordinary powers of their own, that will help her to come to terms with being a mutant, as well as help her learn to control her powers, which can be detrimental, even deadly, to those around her.

Another Pretty Face - Nayeon/Mina - G - Nayeon’s used to imagining herself in healthy relationships with beautiful strangers she sees on the streets. Mina’s an interesting character who keeps showing up in her life from time to time.

Nightswimming - Nayeon/Jeongyeon - T - Nayeon is first. She's the best. She's always the best. Until she's fourth. 2yeon swimming AU; in which Nayeon is the star of the college swim team and Jeongyeon is her roommate.

Compliment - Momo/Sana - G - Three times Momo complimented Sana thinking she didn’t know japanese and the one time Sana returned the compliment

Game - Nayeon/Jeongyeon, Sana/Dahyun, Momo/Mina - T - It's finally Jeongyeon's year. She's finally the starting pitcher and she's got this. At least she thinks she does. But the opposing team's head cheerleader, Im Nayeon has different plans.

5e Giorno Giovana build (JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind)

I’m first, Tulok!

I’m a big sucker for JoJo, having watched the full anime (so up to part 5 - Stone Ocean when?) and making a few stand users in D&D. (Pro tip: Shadow Sorcerer is the stand for The Wolf by SIAMÉS) It was when I was looking through some of the new UA subclasses I thought: “huhn. That would actually really work for Giorno!”

Tulok the Barbrarian’s JoJo builds are really great but he gets a lot more requests than I do on this humble little Tumblr. I’ve seen Giorno suggested in his comments several times so you can be damn-well sure I’m going to post this on Twitter when I’m done the build.

I’m going to try my best to avoid spoilers in this build, but of course some bits will have to be revealed so take it with a grain of salt. Also while tagging this “Giorno x Fugo” was a suggested tag and now you all have to live with that knowledge. Thanks Tumblr.

GOALS

Life, spring forth! - Gold Experience’s ability is to create new life. Excluding how overpowered that is we’ll be using that ability to our advantage when fighting dragons in a possible dungeon.

Gang Player - Giorno takes a sort of medic role in Bruno’s group, keeping everyone “alive” though they may not exactly be “well.”

MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA - Of course it wouldn’t be a bizarre adventure without the JoJo-branded punching ghost.

RACE

Giorno is technically human but he has the blood of a vampire. While there’s no half-vampire race in D&D Half Elves have a mix of a supernatural race in them. Your Charisma increases by 2 and you can increase another two skills by 1: choose Dexterity and Wisdom for your +1s. You get Darkvision up to 60 feet and your Vampire Fey Ancestry gives you advantage against Charms and makes it impossible to put you to sleep with magic. Would’ve probably been useful on the train.

Half Elves get Skill Proficiency in two skills of their choice: choose Animal Handling and Nature to properly take care of whatever you make with your stand. As for languages Common is probably Japanese and Elvish is Italian; pick whatever language you happen to be localized in since it really doesn’t matter.

ABILITY SCORES

15; WISDOM - Giorno is able to keep calm and level-headed in almost all situations, and the odd ability score from our race will balance this out nicely.

14; CHARISMA - Being the son of a vampire makes you naturally charming, on top of the +2 from our race.

13; DEXTERITY - Giorno runs around in a pink suit with lady bug pins, which in no way is heavy armor. And dodging attacks from La Squadra takes a lot of nimbleness.

12; CONSTITUTION - Damage is... interesting in the JoJo universe. Regardless a bit of extra Constitution will help us shrug off a bullet or twenty... Might want to help Mista with that.

10; INTELLIGENCE - Giorno was a good student before joining the gangs; he’s certainly no dummy.

8; STRENGTH - As the joke goes stand users got progressively less buff through the parts.

BACKGROUND

Giorno didn’t really have much of a background before becoming a Gang Star, but Celebrity Adventurer’s Scion from Acquisitions Inc is perfect for the son of DIO. You get proficiency in the Performance and Perception skills, as well as a Disguise Kit and two languages of your choice.

Your Name Dropping feature will let you use your gang influence to get a place to stay and food to eat, or help from some major figures in Passione’s pocket. At least until the boss knows what you’re doing.

THE BUILD

LEVEL 1 - BARD 1

Starting off as a Bard for the added proficiencies, notably the instrument proficiency to get a piano... or at least a Horn, Lute, and Dulcimer. Regardless Bards can choose three skill proficencies from All of Them: so take Medicine, Persuasion, and Athletics for JoJo chase sequences, speeches about dreams, and healing Mista.

Speaking of speeches Bards get Bardic Inspiration, letting them spend a Bonus Action to give an ally a d6 to add to an ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. Giorno is really good at inspiring his teammates. You have a number of them equal to your Charisma modifier and they come back after a Long Rest.

Finally Bards get access to Spellcasting: you get two cantrips from the Bard list. Mage Hand will let you make a bird to ferry over light object to you, and Vicious Mockery lets you deliver a speech about resolve to your enemy, doing a d4 of psychic damage and giving them disadvantage on their next attack roll.

You also get four level 1 spells from the Bard list: Cure Wounds and Healing Word are both staples for the gang medic, Animal Friendship is great for taking care of frogs, and Distort Value from Acquisitions Inc is great for running scams at the airport. Yes I finally get to use AI spells!

LEVEL 2 - MONK 1

Quickly hopping over to Monk to sort out our AC and give us some non stand-based mudas. Monks have Unarmored Defense equal to 10 plus their Wisdom and Dexterity (which is much higher than Leather Armor for you, and I don’t think your jacket is leather.) You also have Martial Arts to do a d4 of damage with your unarmed strikes, and use your Dexterity instead of your Strength to make unarmed strikes. You can also use your Bonus Action to make an additional unarmed strike if you already made a punch, allowing you to MUDA MUDA.

LEVEL 3 - BARD 2

Second level Bards get Jack of All Trades, letting them add half their proficiency bonus to any skill they’re not proficient in. Giorno is the protagonist and while everyone in Bruno’s group has their time to shine Giorno definitely shines with golden resolve. Just remember to let your allies have their time to shine too!

Second level Bards also get Song of Rest, letting you spend some time during short rests to heal everyone for an extra d6 of health if they use hit die to heal.

You also get another spell at this level and Feather Fall will let you cushion the fall if the gang starts to fall. I’d argue that this is less you slowing their fall and more you making a tree to gently lower them to the ground or something, but its up to you to flavor it. Heck: maybe someone else in the gang can make you a parachute?

LEVEL 4 - BARD 3

3rd level Bards get Expertise in 2 skills and as a Half Elf you have a lot of skills to choose from. Regardless I’d choose Nature and Medicine to know exactly what plants to use to heal Mista with Gold Experience.

Speaking of Gold Experience: the College of Creation Unearthed Arcana subclass can create life! But for a start you can make a Note of Potential, letting you give an ally some transformed life when you give them Bardic Inspiration.

Note of Destruction will let life retaliate when your ally use the Bardic Inspiration for an attack roll, forcing enemies within 5 feet of the inspired target to make a Constitution save or take Thunder damage equal to the roll on the Inspiration die.

Note of Protection will let some branches spawn around your ally, giving them temporary hitpoints equal to the roll on the Bardic Inspiration die plus your Charisma modifier when they use the die on a saving throw.

Note of Ingenuity lets an ally roll the Bardic Inspiration die twice when making an Ability Check... I have no Gold Experience reason for this but it’s still a cool ability to have!

Second level Bards also get access to second level spells like Animal Messenger, letting you send a bird out to inform the gang of an incoming stand user.

LEVEL 5 - BARD 4

Level 4 Bards get an Ability Score Improvement, and naturally we want more Charisma for better speeches and more Bardic Inspiration.

You also get another cantrip and another spell: Mending will let you spawn life to repair a broken object, and Enhance Ability will give your allies a boost of life to aid them with specific skill checks along with another bonus based on which skill you choose to aid them with.

LEVEL 6 - BARD 5

5th level Bards see their Bardic Inspiration increase to a d8 for greater Notes of Potential. They also get Font of Inspiration to recover Bardic Inspiration on a short rest instead of a long rest.

You also get access to third level spells and... hey look at that: life to create! The Spells and Magical Tattoos UA gave us Summon Fey Spirit, and while it isn’t quite normal for animals to teleport around the Fey spirit is still great in its own right. The spirit is friendly to you and takes its turn right after you in initiative. When it dies or you lose concentration it disappears. It has armor equal to 11 plus the level you cast the spell at (so probably 14), hit points equal to its Constitution modifier (2) plus your spellcasting modifier (4) plus 10 times the level of the spell you used to cast it. (30) (Adding up to 36 health total.)

It has a short sword with a 3 + the spell’s level hit chance increase (so a +6), and it does a d6 + 3 + the spell’s level (so another 3) piercing damage and a d6 of force damage. The fey does have multiattack equal to half the spells level, but it’s rounded down so right now it can only attack once. (Though if you cast this spell with a 4th level slot it can attack twice!) It has a 40 foot movement speed and can teleport up to 30 feet as a bonus action. And depending on which fey you summon the teleport will have an additional effect:

Deceitful fey can fill a space nearby where they teleport with magical darkness which lasts until the end of their next turn. Consider this a squid... magic squid... land squid.

Joyful fey can force an enemy within 10 feet of where it teleported to make a Wisdom saving throw equal to your spell save DC or be charmed by it for 1 minute. Consider this a peacock or something.

Furious fey get advantage on their next attack roll after teleporting. Just your good old standard mauler: something like a bear.

I really recommend looking at this spell in your own time to understand the nitty-gritty of it, and I highly recommend talking to your DM to make sure that they’re okay with you making another unit for them to compensate for in combat. But they better be okay with you making summons because...

LEVEL 7 - BARD 6

At 6th level Creation Bards get Animating Performance, letting them use their magic to let life spring forth from inanimate objects! As an action you can target a nonmagical item that’s large or smaller which you can see within 30 feet of you. The item becomes a Dancing Item, as seen in the stat block for this ability, and is under your control for 1 hour or until it is reduced to 0 hit points.

In combat it shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take one of the actions in its stat block or the Dash, Disengage, Help, Hide, or Search action. You can also choose what the Dancing Item does if you use your Bonus Action to give Bardic Inspiration.

Yes I did just copy-paste that from the ability’s description, but it should be mentioned that this does help compensate for the fact that you’re not the greatest combatant yourself. Your animated item can do a lot of the fighting for you while you stay in the backline and support. If you have a Fey Spirit out as well that’s two summons fighting for you while you stand in the back!

You can only have one Dancing Item at a time though, and can only use this ability once per Long Rest or until you spend a third level spell slot or higher to reactivate this ability. If you try to make a second Dancing Item the first one becomes inanimate.

Speaking of third level you also get another known spell: Plant Growth will let you... grow plants. Duh. I suggest reading the spell over to see everything you can do with it. Oh and you get Countercharm I guess, letting you waste spend a turn to give allies within 30 feet of you have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.

LEVEL 8 - MONK 2

Now that we got the ability to let life spring forth it’s time to get our stand beatdown. But firstly second level Monks get Ki which lets them do a number of things:

Flurry of Blows let you spend a Ki point to attack twice with your Bonus Action instead of once, so you can MUDA MUDA MUDA.

Patient Defense lets you take the dodge action as a Bonus Action, giving enemies disadvantage to attack you until your next turn.

Step of the Wind lets you Dash or Disengage as a Bonus Action for those JoJo chases, and also doubles your jump distance!

Your Ki points come back after a short rest much like your Bardic Inspiration. Yes these all use your Bonus Action, and you’ll probably be using your Bonus Action to command your Dancing Item. But consider these safety nets for now. If it makes you feel better you also move 10 feet faster thanks to Unarmored Movement.

LEVEL 9 - MONK 3

Third level Monks can choose their Monastic Tradition and Way of the Astral Self get to awaken their close-ranged stand. You can use 2 ki points to activate Arms of the Astral Self, allowing you to use your Wisdom instead of your Strength for Strength checks and saving throws, and allowing you to punch at 10 feet while using your Wisdom instead of your Strength or Dexterity for your unarmed strikes. You also get the ability to attack one extra time per turn with your Bonus Action without spending your Ki, but you’ll probably be spending your Bonus Action to direct your Dancing Item.

You can also Deflect Missiles, letting you reduce the damage of an incoming ranged weapon attack by 1d10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Monk level. If you reduce the damage to 0 you can catch it and then throw it back as a Monk weapon with 1 ki point.

LEVEL 10 - MONK 4

4th level Monks get an Ability Score Improvement and we’ll continue increasing our Charisma for stronger life-giving stand powers.

4th level Monks also get Slow Fall, letting them any falling damage they take by an amount equal to five times your Monk level. Yes you have Feather Fall but you can reserve that spell for your gang while you land safely on your own.

LEVEL 11 - MONK 5

5th level Monks get an Extra Attack, meaning that you can MUDA MUDA normally, MUDA MUDA MUDA with your Bonus Action, and MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA with Flurry of Blows. It’s not quite a 7-page MUDA but you don’t need that many punches unless you’re dealing with the lowest of scum.

That’s because your punches can overwhelm the senses with Stunning Strike, forcing an enemy to make a Constitution save or be stunned for a round, giving all allies advantage to hit them. Note that this counts for all melee weapon attacks so it will work with your Way of the Astral Self arms, but you can punch with Gold Experience’s strength when in a pinch.

LEVEL 12 - BARD 7

We got all the MUDAs we need so now we can finish giving ourselves Gold Experience. 7th level Bards can cast 4th level spells like Polymorph. You can transform a living creature into an animal of CR equal to their CR / level or lower. They can make a Wisdom save to resist but you can transform one of your party members into a powerful beast to take on the boss. T-Rex Narancia? T-Rex Narancia.

LEVEL 13 - BARD 8

At 8th level you get another Ability Score Improvement: since our Charisma is finally maxed out it’s time to grab the Inspiring Leader feat to give a speech to your allies and bolster their resolve, giving them temporary hitpoints equal to your total level plus your Charisma modifier. That’s 18 temporary hitpoints currently!

You also get another spell and Hallucinatory Terrain will let you mold the environment around you temporarily with Gold Experience. None of the changes you make with this spell will last but you can definitely use it to trick some foes into thinking that they’re in danger when they’re actually safe, or tricking them that they’re safe when they’re actually in danger.

LEVEL 14 - BARD 9

9th level Bards see their Song of Rest increase to a d8, because this ability scales very poorly if you multiclass. You do however get access to 5th level spells like Mass Cure Wounds, allowing you to quickly heal any injuries the gang might’ve taken.

LEVEL 15 - BARD 10

Your next level gives you Expertise in 2 more skills: I’d choose Animal Handling and Persuasion to persuade people not to hit the frog you’re handling with a shovel.

But the main appeal of Bard is of course their Magical Secrets: you can choose two spells from any class’ spell list and guess what? We’re going to Druid. Wrath of Nature lets you supercharge the plant growth in an area to do a bunch of useful things, and Entangle is a lower level spell that also slows down enemies. But of course feel free to take other Magical Secrets if you don’t want nothing but plant growth.

Finally your Bardic Inspiration die increase to a d10 and you get another cantrip: Dancing Lights will let you make some fireflies to light the way. Yeah you probably have better light sources but none of the other Bard cantrips really seem that good.

LEVEL 16 - BARD 11

11th level Bards get 6th level spells like True Seeing, so you can make sure that you always reach the truth.

LEVEL 17 - BARD 12

12th level Bards get an Ability Score Improvement and we’ll increase our Wisdom for stronger stunning strikes and punching arms.

LEVEL 18 - BARD 13

13th level Bards see their Song of Rest increase to a d10, because this ability scales terribly. You also get access to 7th level spells and Regenerate is the best spell for Gold Experience. You allow an ally to regenerate health for the duration and they can also regrow limbs! Feel free to rule this as you giving them a newly forming body part.

LEVEL 19 - BARD 14

At 14th level Creation Bards get their final ability Performance of Creation, allowing them to create one nonmagical item in an unoccupied space within 10 feet of them. The maximum gold value is equal to 20 times your level in Bard (so up to 300 GP next level) and it’s obvious that the item was made with this ability due to magical music floating around it.

The item disappears at the end of your next turn unless you use your action to maintain it. You can extend it up to a maximum of 1 minute, after which it continues to exist for a number of hours equal to your bard level. Once you create an item with this feature you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest or spend a spell slot of 5th level or higher to use it again. You can have only one item created at a time and if you use this action and when you have an item out the first one immediately vanishes.

It’s perhaps not too Giorno-esque to make weapons and tools but you can make mounts with this! 280 gold is more than enough to make a riding horse or anything else you might need! Giorno’s craftiness and ability to create what he needs in a fight is one of his biggest strengths.

You also get more Magical Secrets because 14th level for Bard is very loaded. We’ll be hopping back to Druid again for Wall of Thorns, a 6th level spell that lets you make a wall... of... thorns... For your second choice we actually have to wait until next level because of interactions with the Magical Secrets feature.

LEVEL 20 - BARD 15

You final level is the 15th level of Bard for a d12 Bardic Inspiration die. You also get access to 8th level spells at this level but I don’t really want any of them from the Bard list so we’ll be hopping back to 7th level to get Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion inside of Coco Jumbo. The spell is really extravagant and is far bigger than the one room turtle is normally: I highly suggest reading the spell over on your own time so you can set up a proper mansion for a mob boss.

As for that Magical Secret of yours... D&D Beyond is very weird with this but according to my understanding this should be allowed. If you want to subject your enemies to a Requiem the best spell to take would be one from Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount: the 8th level Dunamancy spell Reality Break. Reality Break only has 4 different near-death experiences for your enemies but if they fail their Wisdom check you can make sure they never reach the truth.

I will not order any of you - You are quite the team player, and can make a team for yourself! Your Animating Performance can fight for you while you stay back to heal or cast some heavy nukes.

Don't make me say the same thing twice - You’re incredibly skilled as a Bard with 3 proficencies, Expertise in another 4, and Jack of All Trades in the remaining skills. Regardless of situation you can find a way out of it.

I turned my tooth into a jellyfish - Along with your nukes and your heals you have a ton of utility spells which allow you to travel, rest, and share information safely.

CONS

2 paths - Let me just run down your Bonus Action list real fast: You have...

* Dancing Item commands * Activating your Astral Arms * Unarmed Strikes * Astral Arms attacks * Flurry of Blows / Step of the Wind / Patient Defense * Bardic Inspiration

Mixing two classes with Bonus Action economy results in your overall action economy being very bloated.

In this world, only the results matter! - Everything you have is limited: Ki points, Spell Slots, Bardic Inspiration, and summons. Yes your Ki and Bardic Inspiration comes back on a Short Rest but your spell slots and Bard class features only come back after a Long Rest, meaning that you’ll need a lot more time to recover than others.

Lept past it - This build has a few issues which are more “meta” problems than actual problems with the class. The first issue is that all the spells and features combined result in VERY long turns. In particular if you opt to summon a Fae Spirit and fight with your Dancing Object that results in THREE creatures that need to take their action on your turn.

The other big issue is that the levels in Monk really don’t do much to help you. You would’ve probably been better off investing in Fighter or something for Medium Armor instead of using Unarmored Defense, and while the high Wisdom is nice for skill checks and RP your Astral Self arms aren’t going to be your main weapon by a long stretch, especially since you have so many Concentration spells.

But as a JoJo Protagonist your job is to win your fights and then take a break while the rest of your gang gets their own archs. Inspire their shining resolve but occasionally lay the smackdown on those who truly deserve it. Play the piano so your foes know that they’ll never reach the truth, and spare some paper for the 7 pages you’ll need to do the smackdown.

Art Claims Round 2

Second round, same as the first, only better. We got some stories claimed this past week, but we still have about 92 that are up for grabs and need some wonderful artists. In this round, you can definitely take two stories at a time. If you'd like to claim two stories, please wait until you get an email confirming your first claim, then fill out the form again for a second claim. Everybody spread the word! Grab your artist friends, stuff them in a potato sack, and drag them here kicking and screaming if you have to! This year, art claims are working a little differently than in years past. We are using a google form to streamline things, which should make things easier both for you as participants and us mods. To claim a story, the form requires email, check in ID, and the identifying number of your first choice of story. Putting your top three choices is best in case your first or second has already been chosen. Please be sure you've read the FAQ before claiming.

As for Trinity Continuum: Aberrant itself – we’re headed into the last week for its Kickstarter, and as our experienced KS backers know: that’s when things get hot!

So far, it has been great seeing people’s passion for the original get rekindled by our Trinity Continuum edition. That’s one of the most satisfying moments our team can get – so thanks to all of you who’ve posted about loving what we’re doing!

It really does mean a lot to all of us to recreate a classic game line while still hitting those touch-points that made the first edition a classic.

Trinity Continuum: Aberrant art by Hive Studios

Kind of along the same line, since we announced that we won’t be having a booth at GenCon 2019 we’ve received more than a few worried messages from folks who, we guess, haven’t read this blog since the beginning of the year.

That’s when I first started talking about how this year is one where the initiatives we’ve been undertaking will start to take off. It’s a year where the company’s ongoing and continual evolution will start to be more overt, with us not necessarily doing things the way we have been since 2012, or even further back when a bunch of us were part of White Wolf.

Not having a booth at GenCon 2019 is part of that evolution. Does it still make sense for us to exert soooo much effort, to bring so many people, to spend so much money, versus taking those amounts of effort, personnel, and cash, and dividing them up through the entire year at different venues?

Especially with our good sales partners at Indie Press Revolution and Studio2 having booths where folks can buy our stuff. With us still having panels where we can chat with attendees face to face. And with our online media allowing us to talk with more and more people every week.

We won’t know until we do it, so we’re doing it. We’ll let you know how it turns out!

The convention starts, for us, next Wednesday, so I’ll be posting this blog next Monday with a few more Gen Con thoughts and info, and then the week after we’ll have a guest blogger in to cover for me.

Goth Challenge

Day 1 – How did you come across the subculture?

My Girlfriend of 9 Months in HS was into it (still is) which made me interested in it too. I was always into a bit of the Spookier stuff like Beetlejuice,Vampires and The Addams Family (I dressed up as Morticia when I was 11) but I didn’t really get into to it until I met her and started Shopping at Hot Topic and listening to Marilyn Manson. Day 2 – Share photos and experiences from your Baby Bat days.

I was very much Bubblegum Goth or “Mall” Goth in HS. Alot of Pink mixed with Black and Tripp outfits. Also Winged Eyeliner.

I don’t have any of me in HS Specifically but I do have some from when I was 18-19.

Day 3 – When did you come out the Goth closet? (If you didn’t then simply discuss the topic) When I met My GF. I wasn’t really in the closet though lol

Day 4 – Name a stereotype or cliche you can relate to. Well I did think that being Goth meant you had to be Moody but thankfully I’m not like that anymore. I do have Depression but that has nothing to do with being Goth! I like shopping at Hot Topic (though it’s more of an Alternative Trends Fandom store now more then anything) My favorite Holiday is Halloween and I do like Horror Movies.

Day 5 – Is there a local Goth band or group in your area? Not that I know of

Day 6 – Hand write your favourite lyric and take a picture. I don’t think I have one, at least nothing comes to mind, so :P

Day 7 – Ten of your favourite goth bands.

The Cure, Sioux and The Banshees,Christian Death,Stabbing Westward,69 Eyes,Crux Shadows,SwitchBlade Symphony,Malice Mizer. The last two would be Goth Metal Bands-Lacuna Coil and Nightwish.

Day 8 – What’s your worst and best experience with non-Goths. idk I never payed attention. I did get kids in school that were scared of me because of the way I dressed or acted and that fact that I was Wiccan.

Day 9 – What genre of music do you dislike? Opera,Most Country,Newer Rap (except Nicki and Iggy),Death Metal.

Day 10 – What do you hate and love about the subculture? Well some can be snobs as far as Hot Topic and Music goes. But I feel like all Cultures or Sub Cultures are like that. But I have met some really nice people through The Goth Community and I just like The Fashion and The Music.

Day 11 – Is Goth a lifestyle for you? No

Day 12 – What’s your gothic inspiration? In High School it was Vampires,after High School it was Bands and those around me. Now It would probably be YouTubers and Halloween lol

Day 13 – What was your first band t-shirt? They’re Industrial not Goth but it was this KMFDM shirt My Ex Fiance bought me when we were together. Which I still have.

Day 14 – What was your best and worst DIY disaster. I’ve never DIY’d Clothes.

Day 15 – Your favourite or most expensive item in your wardrobe. My Victorian Skirt I got off a UK Site.

Day 16 – What’s the most casual you’ve ever dressed? I do Causel Goth all the time lol

Day 17 – Your favourite Goth brand. Not saying you need to be on Brand to be Goth but I do like Black Heart,KillStar,Demonia and Black Craft Cult. When I was younger it was Tripp and Iron Fist.

Day 18 – Worst hair experience. As a Goth? I don’t think I had one tbh. the Fushia Dye Job above I didn’t like because it didn’t last. Otherwise I’ve dyed My hair Black and had Fushia Bangs that I really liked. I usually just wore My hair Straight and Down when I was Goth. I never did the Trad Goth style.

Maybe this one but it was inspired By a Visaul Kei band. But I thought it was really cute att (2009) though Gackt Braided one side and I was too lazy to do that.

Day 19 – Share beauty advise and take a photo of your make up. LOL I’m not one to give Beauty advice,do it how ever you want! I do not like wearing insane amounts of Blush or Contouring though. I’ve also never worn false eyelashes.

My Go to Goth Makeup has always been Eyeliner,Maybe Shadow and Lipstick. though I switched out My Black Lipstick for Red now.

Day 20 – If you could dye your hair any colour what would it be? Lavender or a Split Dye.

Day 21 – What body mod do you have or have you considered? I’ve considered My eyebrow but I don’t know if I’ll do it. I only have My ears pierced twice.

Day 22 – If you could attend any Goth event what would it be? idk

Day 23 – Your favorite artist or photographer. I can’t remember the names but here is some Artwork I really like.

13 Off-the-Beaten-Path Things to See and Do in Paris

Paris is filled with famous attractions: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Versailles, the catacombs, the Pantheon, the Arc de Triomphe, Sacre-Coeur. The list goes on. There are so many amazing sites here that you could spend days (heck, even weeks) just seeing the main, most well-known ones.

But there’s more to Paris than the sites that attract thousands upon thousands of visitors each day. While I was living Paris the past few months, I made it my mission to see some of the more unusual, lesser-known (but equally awesome) attractions (that didn’t coming with the aggravating crowds that make so many of Paris’ attractions unbearable).

And, while some of the things on the list below might not be “super secret” attractions or activities, they do fall into the category of “over looked attractions” so I included them.

Here are some of the best off-the-beaten-path things to see and do in Paris:

1. Le Manoir de Paris

This is where macabre museum meets haunted house. Numerous rooms highlight some of the more unsettling aspects of Paris’s long and often dark past, such as the Phantom of the Opera, vampires, or the crocodiles in the sewers. Using real actors as well as animatronics, the city’s gruesome and unsettling history is brought to life in an interesting way. In addition to their museum, they also have escape rooms as well as different levels of intensity depending on how scared you get!

2. Musée Édith Piaf

Édith Piaf is perhaps the most famous French singer from the 1930s to the 1960s, and know around the world for her song La vie en rose and Non, je ne regrette rien (which appeared in the movie Inception). She lived in a little apartment in the Ménilmontant district at the start of her career, which has been turned into tiny museum dedicated to her. You get a glimpse at her life through her gold and platinum records, photographs, clothing, letters from fans, posters, recordings, and sheet music.

5 Rue Crespin du Gast, +33 1 43 55 52 72. Open Monday-Wednesday 1pm-6pm and Thursdays 10am-12pm. Admission is free, but you’ll need to make an appointment. You’ll also want to either speak decent French or go with someone who does.

3. Musée Curie

Marie Curie was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize (and the only woman to win it twice) for her research into radioactivity (a word that she invented). She was the first female professor at the University of Paris as well as the first woman to be entombed in the Panthéon on her own merits. Located in the 5th arrondissement, this museum, in her old laboratory, highlights her radiological research. It’s insightful and eye-opening for anyone unfamiliar with her historic discoveries.

4. Archives Nationales

Opened in 1867, the National Archives houses thousands of historical documents dating back to 625 CE. One of six national archives in the country, the museum sheds light on France’s turbulent past, providing nuanced historical details and context through permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Built by the order of Napoleon I, the building itself (known as the Hôtel de Soubise) is absolutely stunning. It is in the late Baroque style, embracing long columns and lots of statues and sculptures. It features immaculate grounds and gardens as well. They always hold a lot of good exhibitions too.

5. The Gallery of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy

Opened in 1898, this museum is home to over 1,000 animal skeletons from around the world, including complete skeletons of elephants, large cats, and even dinosaurs. It’s as interesting as it is unsettling: all the animals are facing the same way, making it look like you’re in the midst of some undead stampede!

6. The Vampire Museum

Paris has a long history with the esoteric, one that is brought to life in this fascinating (if not macabre) museum founded by an eccentric scholar to showcase his knowledge of the undead and esoteric. Here you’ll find vampire-killing kits, rare texts on demonology, and mysterious ancient relics. It’s a busy, eclectic, creepy museum that’s a feast for the eyes and one worthy of a visit if you’re at all interested in more obscure (and fanciful) tales. It’s a fun little, kitsch museum.

7. Petite Ceinture

In use from 1862 through 1964, the railway circling Paris was abandoned when the city expanded beyond its limits. It’s mostly hidden behind buildings and covered in wild plants and grass now, though some sections are now officially open to the public. You’ll find all sorts of flowers and street art along the tracks.

While some sections are illegal to visit, near Parc Georges Brassens you’ll find a section of the tracks known as the ‘Passage de la Petite Ceinture’ that is both free and legal to visit. It’s located in the 15e arrondissement.

8. The Salvador Dalí Sundial

This surrealist sundial was created by world-renowned artist Salvador Dalí. Located on Rue Saint-Jacques, it’s is a mix of a human face and a scallop shell (the symbol of the Camino to Santiago, since the street is named after the saint). While the sundial doesn’t actually work, it’s nevertheless an easy way to see a piece of artwork by one of the most famous artists in the world.

9. Montmartre Cemetery

While the Père Lachaise Cemetery is the largest and most popular in Paris, for a more secluded stroll, check out the Montmartre Cemetery. Plenty of people visit the top of Montmartre for Sacré-Coeur and the view, but few take the time to wander this cemetery sitting at the foot of the district. It opened in 1825 and is home to many cobwebbed mausoleums, as well as a handful of stray cats. You won’t see many people here, so you can explore in peace.

10. The Museum of Counterfeiting

Opened in 1972, this museum is home to counterfeit items that have been collected by France’s customs agents and police (as well as donated items from brands and consumers alike). There are over 500 items in the museum, ranging from counterfeit art and luxury goods to more mundane items, like cleaning supplies. While some knockoffs are impressive in their duplicity, it’s also funny to see just how bad some counterfeiters were!

11. Promenade Planteé (Coulée verte René-Dumont)

This tree-lined walkway is a greenbelt that extends almost 5km along the old Vincennes railway line. The railway line ceased functioning in 1969, with the park being inaugurated a few decades afterward. Until New York built their High Line, it was the only elevated park in the entire world. (And, honestly, this is way nicer the the NYC High Line). You’ll find lots of trees, flowers, ponds, and places to sit along this long path that stretches from Bastile to the edge of Paris. It’s al ong really easy and beautiful walk. You won’t find many people here. Even on a nice day, it’s rather empty. It quickly became one of my favorite things to do in Paris and I can’t recommend coming here enough!

12. Canal Saint-Martin

Stretching 4.5km, the Canal Saint-Martin is a man-made waterway commissioned by Napoleon. Construction finished in 1825, connecting the Canal de l’Ourcq to the Seine via both above ground locks and underground tunnels. While not any secret spot (on a nice day, you’ll find the canal lined with people), it’s mostly a spot for locals who want to have a picnic and relax. So, say no to the Siene, and come have your outdoor picnic along the canal. It’s more relaxing and there will be fewer people!

The canal starts at Place de Stalingrad and ends at Quai de la Râpée. Canal cruises last 2.5 hours and cost around 16 EUR per person.

13. Museé de Montmartre

Founded in 1960, this museum is located throughout two building that date back to the 17th century. Over the years, the buildings were home to many famous writers and painters. The gardens of the museum were actually renovated to look more like the gardens in Renoir’s paintings (there is also a vineyard nearby that dates back to the Middle Ages but it makes horrible wine). The museum’s permanent collection includes a wide variety of paintings, posters, and drawings.

While the main sights in Paris are always worth checking out, but if you want to be more than a tourist and develop a greater appreciation for the City of Light’s unique and complex history, visit these unconventional and unusual attractions in Paris.

Book Your Trip to Paris: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use them all the time. Some of my favorite places to stay in Paris are:

St. Christopher’s Canal – Comfy spot on the canal. During the summer months, the terrace is hopping!

3 Ducks Hostel – This hostel has one of the cheapest bars in the city, and it’s just a 10-minute walk to the Eiffel Tower.

Les Piaules – Fantastic chimney lounge, a cool bar, and a rooftop space. It’s a great place to meet people!
