“Janus. We are going to get coffee, and you are going to tell me about how Roman’s brother is, and you are going to tell me why you have never told me a single true fact about yourself, and then if you would like, I can never see you again aside from this single class."

Logan finally has a talk with Janus. Virgil is noticing some changes to Patton's behavior that are a bit familiar. Janus realizes a heart can't stay closed forever with such insistent knockers on its door.

Janus is practically dragging herself on her crutches as she tries to make it around the school. Over-the-counter pain killers aren’t cutting it today, and she grumbles under her breath as the crowds begin dispersing quicker, the bell toll nearing. Already wobbling and stumbling, it takes one bit of slippery floor for her foot to come out from under her. Janus falls with a yelp, her backpack only serving to crush her further down. She groans and curses, laying limply on the floor from pain, trying to breathe.
She can’t seem to will her arms to be strong enough to lift herself up, even when trying to pull herself up with her crutches. She lets out a loud sigh in the empty hallway, resting her forehead on the cool floor despite how gross it is. The bell sounds anyway, uncaring of her plight. Footsteps fill the hall after a few long moments, and she grits her teeth, prepared for embarrassment. The footsteps round the corner, and stop. Great.
“Janus?”
Oh. Even better. Someone that knows her. Wonderful. She turns her head and sees Logan, hanging back slightly in the hall.
“The floor is not a very sanitary place to rest,” she says, straight-faced.
“10 minutes later than usual?” Janus drones in a mimic of Lo’s voice. Logan’s face falls into a frown, but not an angry or upset one, it’s something worse; pity. Janus turns her face away again, burning with embarrassment. Logan comes over to her, crouching beside her.
“I was preoccupied this morning,” Lo says in a mumble. “Do you need help getting up?”
Janus so badly wants to turn down the help out of spite, but desperate times and all. “If you could. Thanks.”
Logan hums, and then hefts her up into a sitting position by her shoulders. She grabs her crutches, and sets them up in a standing position. “Are you able to pull yourself up using them?” Janus nods dully, gripping the handles of the crutches and, slowly, with Logan’s help, pulling herself up and back into the support of her mobility aids. She’s panting slightly from weakness.
Logan looks at her, that same sympathetic frown tilting her lips downward. “Will you be okay?” she offers, touching Janus’s shoulder in an oddly warm gesture given how Janus usually knows her. Janus nods, lips pressed together thinly, her brow slightly sweaty. “We will be in less trouble if we are both late. The professor likes me. I will explain your fall. You just sit down.”
And she does, crutching silently through the lecture room and into her usual seat under the watchful gaze of the entire class while Logan pauses up front, murmuring to the paused professor. The professor nods at her, glancing at Janus, and with an even quieter muttering he sends Logan to her seat as well. Logan sits with a sigh, massaging her temples. Janus has her head rested on the table, trying to take the chance to rest. Logan reaches over and takes Janus’s notebook. “I will copy notes for you. Please, just rest.”
Janus can’t meet Logan’s eyes, staring at the dark wood of the desk instead; the genuine pity in her eyes is more physically painful than her physical pain. Nodding, she silently concedes to it. She hides her face in her arms, as though they can hide every ugly, broken part of her if she buries deep enough into her yellow sweater. She breathes out slowly, trying to relax, even if just for a bit before the day full of classes.
She ends up half asleep, and Logan’s tapping of her arm wakes her up to the students clearing out of the room. Logan is standing, half ready to go, looking down at her with that same oddly soft look. “I take it the couchmate has been a… nuisance?”
Janus laughs half-heartedly. “No, it’s actually… actually the opposite. I’ve been more of a nuisance I suppose.” Logan notices how far off and exhausted her voice sounds, frown deepening.
“Janus, do you have any breaks throughout the day?”
Janus blinks a bit dopily, still tired and very much in pain. “Why?”
“If our schedules align at any point, I would like to get coffee with you.”
“Are you hitting on me?” Janus asks flatly.
“What? No. I just want to have coffee together.”
“Why?” she practically hisses, her instincts to shove the closeness away rising up in her throat like bile.
“Because you need someone to talk to-“
“I don’t want to talk to you, Logan. Isn’t getting to chat with me for three minutes before class enough for you? Do you really need to be blessed by my presence that much?” Any hint of playfulness is out of her voice, Janus trying not to clench her teeth around the words.
“Your couchmate is my partner’s brother,” Logan interjects soundly, her face determined. “And his brother would like an update on him.”
Janus just sits there, heat boiling under her skin. Of course. The only hint of a friend she thought might be there was somehow tied to those idiots. Of course, because she’s the most cosmically unlucky bitch out there. She doesn’t respond, picking up her bag and setting herself in her crutches. She doesn’t respond, making her way towards the door as fast as she can.
Suddenly, Logan is in front of her, grabbing at her elbows in the crutches and holding her still. Janus blanches, freezing up and looking up into Logan’s face. They have angers on their faces to match each other, in a battle of who will wither first.
“Coffee. When?”
“I don’t want-“
“Janus. We are going to get coffee, and you are going to tell me about how Roman’s brother is, and you are going to tell me why you have never told me a single true fact about yourself, and then if you would like, I can never see you again aside from this single class. I- I enjoy your presence. You are intelligent, and witty, and very bright, even when you’re literally on the ground. Janus, you are very strong, but I still think you’re holding too much.” Logan’s face softens, and Janus breaks the eye contact, staring hard at the floor. “Stop doing this – whatever this is – alone. Take allies where you can, for fuck’s sake.”
Janus hides her shock at the genuine, panicked tone in Logan’s voice, an actual show of emotion. She gnaws on her lip hard, trying to avoid talking for as long as possible. “Fine,” she breathes out shakily. “Fine. I have a free period at 2:30.”
“I have some time around then,” Logan says, seeming to purposefully soften her voice as though she’s afraid she’s scared Janus. Her hands recede from her crutches, and Logan steps to the side, her outfit and hair slightly more frazzled than usual. “Please go to your next class, and I’ll see you then. Our grade comparisons are still very promising.” Logan begins to walk away, then stops. “I think there is more in common between us than you think.
Janus sighs out a held breath, and exits as swiftly as a girl on crutches can manage.
--
Virgil is buzzing with nervous excitement as Patton drives them down the brief stretch of highway, twirling his hoodie’s drawstrings. He keeps glancing around with a giant smile, eyes constantly shifting.
“We are going to be in so much trouble,” he snickers. Patton shushes him, also giggling.
“It’ll be fine, Virge, I texted the other two that we weren’t meeting up with them for coffee to let them have more time together, and they completely bought it. It’s technically true!”
Virgil laughs. “Where did this spontaneity come from, bluebell?”
“I don’t know, violet!” Patton taps their fingers on the steering wheel, grinning. They pull the car off on an exit, and nearly immediately into the parking lot of a Denny’s. They both exit the car and clasp each other’s hands once they’re at the front, grinning at each other.
“Logan is going to be so mad if she finds out,” Virgil says, a hint of genuine nervousness in his voice. “I don’t know how I feel, lying to her…”
Patton turns to face him, pouting. “Aw, but Virgil, we haven’t had time for a date in so long!” They swing their hands back and forth together softly. “It’s only a few hours of skipped classes, and I got Tammy to copy my teaching classes notes and Rico to handle your engineering notes until we get back – it should be okay.”
Virgil sighs, nodding and sending them a smile. “Okay. Let’s go.”
The host calls a greeting to them as they enter, telling them to sit anywhere. They shuffle into a booth on the same side as each other, Virgil laying his head down on Patton’s shoulder. “This is really risky.”
“How come?”
“I- I don’t know, I just feel like we’ll end up in trouble somehow. You know I hate lying. How I feel about it.”
Patton frowns, turning to him and lifting his chin gently to look at them. “It’s okay, I promise. It’s only a little one just so Lo doesn’t have another panic attack like when Roman skipped that one day last year. I don’t wanna make her any more stressed,” Patton pouts slightly. Virgil looks vaguely uncomfortable for a moment, blinking quickly.
“I trust you,” he mutters, before laying back on their shoulder. Patton rests their head on his, giggling quietly at the feeling of their hair – currently in its natural puffy state and simply held at their shoulders in a ponytail holder and pins - squishing against him.
A waiter comes over to them, and Patton touches Virgil’s hand. “Buy anything you want, okay? I asked Rom to borrow his card.” They turn to the waitress. “What’s the biggest thing of pancakes you can do, ma’am?”
The waitress chuckles. “Only two per the order, but you can get multiple orders.”
“Okay! Three orders of the banana pancake breakfast, please and thank you.”
“And you?”
Virgil startles, rapidly flipping through the menu again while stuttering. “Uh- Cheese fries, and- and the quesadilla. Please.” The waitress nods and smiles at him, walking off after writing it down. Virgil sinks down in his seat, then hides against Patton’s shoulder. “I haaaaate ordering things.”
“Aw, honey…” Patton grabs his cheeks and peppers kisses over his forehead until he’s bright red and batting at them while laughing. Patton grins at him. “I’m really happy we get to go here again. Even if we had to… force in the time for it. I missed just having fun with you.”
Virgil is mostly hiding behind his bangs, but Patton still sees his smile. “Missed it with you too, Pat.”
They end up not even chatting much, just hanging off each other in their seat, occasionally sharing light kisses. When the food comes, Patton thanks the waitress profusely for all six of the pancakes. She lays out multiple syrups, then sets out Virgil’s meal as well.
They both begin digging in immediately, Patton eating fast per usual. “Dang, slow down, you need to let yourself enjoy it,” Virgil comments through bites of his own meal. Patton pauses, dabbing their mouth with a napkin and laughing nervously.
“Sorry!”
“No, it’s okay.” Virgil leans to their ear. “You know I know why you do it – I just want you to focus on fun stuff instead of all that right now. Enjoy it, okay?” Patton gives him a syrupy kiss on the cheek, to which he proclaims, “Gross!” They both dissolve into laughter, and then turn back to their meals.
As Virgil eats, he tries to ignore the nauseous worm of guilt in his stomach that’s not making way for the meal at all. He really, really hates lying, even a harmless one like this. The hand on his chin plus the sugary reassurances were… triggering, he realizes faintly. He leans his chin on one of his palms as he chews, beginning to poke at his food. He hasn’t thought about Janus in a long time, and he prefers it that way. Finding out Remus was staying with her resulted in probably one of the worst anxiety attacks he’s had in a while, even if he never had much faith in Remus in the first place. Though the fear of what lies she could be feeding him right this moment begins making him even more nauseous. She’s a manipulative snake of a person that Virgil had hoped would never be anywhere close to him again, never close enough to lie to him again-
“Virge, you’re panting,” Patton’s voice speaks, drawing him back to the present.
“Huh? Oh, s-sorry. I got a little lost.”
Patton holds his shaking hand softly. “Do your breathing exercises, honey.”
Virgil nods, and complies, breathing in and out in pattern until the world feels slightly clearer. He settles himself, turning his face to lay on their shoulder. “Let’s- let’s not lie like this again. Even if it is really nice to spend time with you. Can you promise?”
Patton nods rapidly. “Of course- I’m really sorry, bug. I didn’t know it would get you that bad.” They lift his face in both hands and rub their foreheads together. “I promise. No more lies if we can help it.”
Virgil calms down a lot at the much more Patton-like show of attention, sighing. He goes back to eating his meal, and from there on it’s only idle chatter as Virgil’s anxiety has worn him out a bit. They pay with Roman’s card and head to the car, heading back into town quickly at Virgil’s request. Virgil curls up at the window, his hood pulled up over his hair as he rests there, hoping that promises can still mean something, even if he has everlasting fears about them.
--
Janus drags herself to the on-campus coffee shop, annoyingly having to fumble with the door in a way that won’t make her fall over. She immediately spots Logan in a corner, who also spots her and begins making her way over.
“Want me to order you anything?”
“I can order on my own-“
“Janus, please. Allow me to assist you, just for today. You are sweating and you look sick with the pain you are in.” Logan looks at her, eyebrows tilted into a genuine, caring look. “Please.”
Janus sighs. Logan really doesn’t leave much choice to others with the way of authority she speaks. “Okay, fine. I just want chai, I’ll go sit across from where you were.”
She nearly collapses in the chair she chooses, leaning her crutches against the side of said chair and setting her forehead in her hand, exhausted. Logan approaches maybe ten minutes later with the tea and a black coffee for herself. Janus doesn’t thank her as she takes it, but it doesn’t feel like Logan was expecting one in the first place.
“So,” she begins. “To begin with, how is Roman’s twin? I feel that is the easiest subject to delve into.”
“He’s fine,” Janus says with a sigh. “He sleeps, he eats, he cooks, he makes stupid jokes. All healthy behavior of a Remus in the wild.”
“As far as I know he is just a human being,” Logan says, seeming to be trying to show genuine reassurance. Janus just kind of silently stares at her, not even sure what to say to that. Logan continues anyways. “If possible, try to ask him to text his brother back. Roman has been extremely worried these past few days.
“Shocking. Roman is a prissy asshole, I don’t care what he has to say or what he has to say to Remus. They need distance for once in their lives.”
“Could you at least provide updates through me?”
Janus waves her hand dismissively, but nods in agreement.
“Then, on to the next question. Janus, why do I not know anything about you? I can… tend to misunderstand relationships, but I did think of us as at least somewhat friends. Is that not true?”
“No, Logan- No, we technically are friends. A little bit. I wouldn’t talk to you and sit beside you every weekday if I didn’t like you, I typically am not that tolerant of annoying people though it may shock you.”
“I enjoy speaking to you as well, as I said you’re very bright and intelligent. You did not explain why you don’t talk about yourself.”
“I don’t enjoy having others that know things about me.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s bothersome.”
“How?”
Janus sighs, a bit frazzled. “Because when people know information about you, they use it against you and or talk about it behind your back. Such as to a group of old buddies that would be very keen on all the hot goss about Janus and her sick little impoverished life.”
Logans sits back slightly, sipping her coffee. She remains silent. Janus does too, until the silence is making her uncomfortable.
“I’m chronically ill. And poor as dirt. And maybe, just maybe, barely able to afford college in the first place. I’ve been supporting myself and doing everything myself since I was 16, I’m used to it.”
“But it’s killing you.”
“Not if I have a say in it.”
“You no longer ‘have a say,’ your body is breaking down further from the amount of stress you are putting yourself under.”
“Figure that out yourself, doctor?”
Logan stares at her hard. “The majority of chronic illnesses are exacerbated by stress. I don’t need a medical license to know that.” Janus stays silent, examining her gloved fingertips. “For whatever it might be worth, I know the others would not use points like those against you in any way,” Logan attempts to reassure.
Janus scoffs. “I don’t know if you know them that well then, Logan.”
“Did Remus?”
Janus hesitates bitterly. “Well, no. But he was always different. He was… always an outcast too, I guess. So, he isn’t a preppy rich kid or a ‘mommy’s favorite traitor.’ Remus gets it in ways the others never did or will.”
“Still, Roman would like to hear about his brother in one way or another. My intention isn’t to mend a long dead friendship or force any of you to see each other. Given how Virgil reacted at just the mention of your name, I don’t think it is salvageable.”
“Oh, how he reacted. Of course, because he’s the one with the right to feel betrayed and hurt by that shit.” Janus tries not to seethe through her teeth so obviously, but it’s difficult. Knowing that Virgil still somehow thinks he’s in the right is threatening to make her bite off someone’s head. He really will just think he’s better than everyone on earth until the day he dies, huh.
Logan sets her already empty mug on the table between them, looking at her with open curiosity. “None of you are ever very specific over what happened in high school. I do not understand the need to act like nothing will have changed about you as people in three or four years.”
“Losing any ounce of faith in a friend tends to include the faith in them to better as a person.”
“Fascinating,” Logan muses. Janus shoots her a weird look, and she stumbles to correct herself. “A-apologies, the intricacies of human relationships are interesting to me. I didn’t mean to-“
“It’s fine, Logan.”
“You may call me ‘Lo’ if you would like,” she says after a pause.
“What, why? What did I do to earn cutesy nickname privileges, I just insulted your friends and was mean to you on purpose.”
Logan shrugs, a slight smile on her lips. “I don’t know. Call me crazy, but I don’t sway particularly to either side, nor do I trust the two groups to asses each other’s character accurately. I still like you, and I see no reason to discontinue the friendship we have.”
Janus hides her face in her tea, taking a long sip to try putting her thoughts together. Logan doesn’t really strike her as even capable of lying, so there’s no reason to think she would be manipulative – it seems like she really just wants updates on Remus and to keep talking to her in the mornings. It’s weird for her, if she’s honest with herself. Logan’s form of genuineness, just like her way of speech, leaves no room to be questioned or argued with. She puts the cup down, licking her lips nervously.
“Alright, Logan. You get your way, hope you’re pleased. I’ll let you know how Remus is every now and then.”
“And will we remain companions?”
“If you talk as little as possible about those two then we can manage.” Janus sighs, glancing at the time on her phone. “My break is almost over,” she lies, technically still having 20 minutes, but too emotionally exhausted to talk about things like this anymore. “See you in class, I suppose.”
Logan stands as well, watching as Janus scrambles her way into her crutches. “I will see you in class. Hopefully we can get coffee every now and then. Or do other things you are interested in, if you prefer. I could see you aren’t a coffee person.”
Janus nods tersely, ready to just get through the rest of the day, somehow. “I really have to go, but we can chat about it tomorrow morning, ‘kay?”
“Alright. Take more pain killers before the school day ends. Bye.”
“…Bye, Lo.”
Janus makes it through the day, and through the drive home, thanks to some miracle. Remus seems to immediately notice how exhausted she looks, but he hesitates to get up and help her, just rocking and staring at her from the sofa bed as she leans her crutches on the wall and sets away her books. She meets his gaze, leaning on the island to support herself. “Hello,” she offers.
“Hi, Jan! You look like absolute shit; do you need anything?”
Janus gestures vaguely. “I don’t know, Remus. I don’t know what I need.”
“How does eggs and some pastries I got at the place next to my work sound, to start with?” He has a wide, slightly wild smile, and she faintly wishes she could match his energy.
“Just to start? What, do you have plans?”
“Ehh maybe something or other! I did bring a PS4 with me, y’know, and even if you’re too hurting to play with me, you can watch while you eat! I’ll cook for you, go sit! Sit!” Remus scuttles around her and into the kitchen, clanging through her pans and starting up a quick batch of eggs. She sits on the bed, and sees a half-eaten box of doughnuts and other goodies open beside where Remus had been sitting. She rolls her eyes somewhat affectionately, picking up a lemon iced cake. Ridiculous that Remus seemingly cared about her enough to remember her favorite types of pastries after three years.
She listens to him making random noises at himself in the kitchen as though beatboxing badly, and tries to stamp out that wretched warm feeling in her chest. How dare I do this to myself again, she chides herself. How dare my heart get close to more idiots who will only break it.
An hour or so later, with a full stomach and a bit of laughter at how shit at games Remus is, she hates herself a bit less for it. She laughs at him getting headshot by some other player, instinctively hiding her face against his shoulder to mask that she's having fun. Remus’s hands fully pause on the controls, laughing turning a bit breathy as he feels himself flushing. She stays leaned against him even after their laughter has died off, and they fall into silence, rested against each other.
“You’re such an idiot, Carmona. Alas, I think you’re one I’ll be stuck with for life.”
“Y’know, I think I’d be okay with being your idiot my whole life,” Remus chuckles to himself. Janus’s face stays hidden, her hair covering any hint of expression. They both sit still for a long moment before Janus rises.
“Let’s bet on it. If you can win even one round of this game, just one, then I might not kick your ass to the curb tomorrow morning.”
“Oh, you are so on!”

Reminiscence
Let's have a Blast from the Past for @loceitweek Day 6, both in the story and as a callback! Because this is set in my AU where Logan and Remus are Janus' fathers! The other stories related to this - but not necessary to have read to understand this - are Today's Topic: Snakes, The Third Snake Plan and As Long As You Try Your Best. (I would make them into a series, I just don't have a good name for it...)
Masterpost | Loceit Week 2023 Masterpost | Ao3
Summary: Janus is about to move to college. It's a big change for both him and his fathers.
Content Warnings: mentions of snakes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Janus sighed as he looked around the room. It was so weird seeing so empty. This had been his room, his safe haven his entire life but now it was time to leave for college. It still felt unreal to him.
A knock on his open door pulled him out of his thoughts. He looked over to see his father leaning against the frame. He was smiling but it seemed not quite genuine.
“How is the packing coming along?”
“I’m mostly done,” Janus hummed, again surveying the room. “This feels really weird though.”
“It does, doesn’t it? I always thought that the tearful goodbyes as the child heads off to college in movies were very overexaggerated but now that I’m faced with the reality myself? I can see where they are coming from.”
“Well, I didn’t think you would be the emotional one about my move and not Dad.”
“Oh, believe me, he will be more emotional than me when you actually get in the car. These kinds of things hit him more in the moment than during the built-up.”
“Yeah, I know.” Janus smiled sadly. He was excited to go to college, to stand on his own two feet and meet new people while also having Virgil around still (he said that he agreed to go to the same college as his cousin because of his anxiety but secretly he’s very happy to have Virgil as a constant himself. Also removes the issue about having to get along with a stranger as his roommate,) but he would miss his dads.
“Repurposing this room will take some time to get used to as well,” his father added, finally walking inside and towards Janus’ desk on which some mementos were gathered.
“You didn’t need to do that right away, by the way. I will come to visit during breaks, you know,” Janus snorted, joining his father as he leafed through a photo album.
“It wasn’t needed in the sense that we needed the space, but I think it is better for both your Dad’s and my headspace to do so. Maintaining this room just for you to eventually visit us is not the kind of parent I want to be. There will be a place to sleep for you here, always, of course but it won’t just be yours anymore unless you move back in at some point. Which you are free to do for any reason, of course.”
“Thanks, Papa,” Janus laughed, leaning against his father’s side as they looked at the pictures together. “Oh, look, it’s Jake, John and Joey!” He pointed to a picture of himself around seven years old with three snakes wrapped around his arms and neck. “I miss those three.”
“I imagine you would. You were devastated when they passed.” Logan laid a hand on his son’s shoulder and squeezed it reassuringly.
“Yeah, they were my best friends for so long,” Janus whispered, thumbing over the photo once. “Did Dad ever tell you I took Jake to great-aunt Cathy’s funeral?” Logan let go of his shoulder and faced him with a raised brow.
“He did not. Why would he allow you to do that?”
“Oh, he didn’t,” Janus laughed. “I just told him about it when I convinced him to buy me John.”
“I see. You have always been very good at wrapping Remus around your finger. He just never learned how to say no to you.”
“Oh, please, I could wrap you around my finger just as well.”
“I can’t truly deny that,” Logan laughed.
“What are you two talking about without me?” Janus’ other father suddenly called from the door, making the other two turn around to face him.
“Just reminiscing a bit, dear,” Logan explained and held out a hand to Remus as an invitation to join them. “Want to take some time to just look at some pictures together?”
“Hell yeah! Anything that gets me out of carrying me stuff to the garage!”
Janus chuckled as he watched his Dad’s antics. He was going to miss both of his fathers so much but as strange as that may sound, he kinda looked forward to it.
“How are you going to kill anyone when you can’t even hold a gun without shaking?”
-
When Logan had woken up that morning, this was the last place he’d expected to wind up. The day had started off like any other; he got up, got dressed, ate what measly food he had left lying around his apartment, and shuffled to the washroom for a shower. But when he turned the tap, nothing happened.
Shit. He thought. That's right, the water was turned off yesterday.
His landlord had been more than patient by this point, waiting for any sort of rent or utility money to come from Logan, but at this point his balance is sitting at a comfortable fifty-two cents.
So he flopped onto his couch, heaving a sigh as he tried to think of anything at all to do. But his thoughts were turbulent, folding over themselves in the way that would guarantee a headache. So he grabbed his most recent book, some crime novel.
The man held the gun to the back of the other's head. "Give me all your money!"
Logan rolled his eyes. Yeah, right. Like that would work. He set the open book down on his chest, head rolling to look lazily around his apartment. His eye caught on something orange, and he stopped.
It would never work, would it? But he found himself getting up and grabbing the object. It was a toy gun, orange tipped and plastic, that his nephew had forgotten there. Surely not.
But as the anxious desperation was quickly overwhelming him, he found himself moving almost on instinct. Adrenaline flooded in his chest as he popped off the orange tip and tucks it into his pocket. He pulls on his jacket and shoes, leaving his apartment.
-
Janus was exhausted. He hadn't slept all night and was starting to feel it. His bruised and bloodied hands tucked into his jacket pockets, he started the long trek home. Really, it was his own fault. He just had to choose the abandoned tannery on the other side of town. Damn his need for dramatic flair. But it had worked, the threat of using rusted old tanning tools had gotten him the money he needed.
But now all he wanted to do was lay in bed and not move for days. Of course, he never got what he wanted. As he cut through an alleyway, he heard a click from behind him, something getting pressed into the back of his skull.
"Give- give me all your mon- money." A shaking voice demanded.
Janus sighed and turned around to look at his mugger. Tall, clean cut, tartan scarf around the lower half of his face. He looked like he belonged in a college library, not mugging people in the dingy part of town. Janus raised his eyebrow.
"Really?" It was hard to keep his disbelief from his voice, so he didn't bother.
"Ye- yes! Empty your pockets!" The man tried to double down on his tough guy act.
"Alright." Janus reached into his pocket. "You're so scary holding a hunk of plastic, but I think you can do better."
He pulled his gun out of his pocket. As he did, the other man's eyes widened and he took a step back.
"Here." Janus held it out. "Take it. If you're so tough."
The man reached out, snatching it from him. Now Janus had a real gun pointed at him.
Shit. He thought. Hopefully he'd judged this right.
-
Oh God oh God oh God. Logan thought. This was way more than he bargained for. He didn't want to actually shoot someone. But he was just handed a gun by his victim. Who did this guy think he was? Logan's hands trembled as he found the safety, making sure it was on.
“How are you going to kill anyone when you can’t even hold a gun without shaking?” The suave looking man asked as he pressed his own head against the barrel of the gun.
"I don't want to kill you, just give me your money and I will let you go." Logan could hear the quiver in his own voice. He didn't sound threatening and he knew it. His hands were shaking so bad he was practically tapping his forehead repeatedly with it.
"No, no. It's been a long day. Show me how tough you are, entertain me!" The man taunted. He straightens up, pulling out another gun. Logan was in way over his head. "Here's an ultimatum. Shoot me and make my day interesting, or I will shoot you and it will mean nothing to me."
He leveled the gun with Logan's chest.
-
BANG!
A loud shot rang out as a trigger was pulled.
Janus stumbled back, clutching his leg. Low blow, stranger. He looked up to see the mugger, but he was gone. Oh well. He would be seeing that coward again soon.
For now, he grit his teeth and pulled out his phone. He had to make a call, seeing as there was no way he could walk home now.
-
Logan just ran. It was all he could do. He was already hearing the sirens in his head, and could feel K9 teeth around his legs. But before he knew it he was home, having his breakdown in the relative familiarity of his apartment.
Calm down, Logan. You have to calm down. He took a deep breath as he settled himself down on his couch.  First things first, get rid of the gun. It has my fingerprints, I can't just toss it.
He opened his sink, stashing it in the disposal. Okay, that will have to do for now. Now… Now what? Change clothes? Maybe. Shower? Okay. Walk to the shower, turn it on, bathe. Wait, the water is out.
It took several hours to clear his head even a little bit. He was certain it was only a matter of time before he was arrested. Or maybe the man had followed him here and was coming back to seek revenge. Anyone who dared a stranger to shoot them had to be dangerous. His heart was beating a mile a minute, just waiting for-
Knock knock knock.
Oh fuck. Logan looked at his door with wide eyes, sure he was about to have a heart attack. He found himself standing, moving on muscle memory. It was like he was swimming, his head dizzy and numb. He was watching himself move from an outside perspective. Stand, walk, unlock the door, accept the handcuffs.
Except no handcuffs came. Instead of police at the door, he found himself looking down at a package on the ground. A small cardboard box, barely the size of a shoebox. He peeked his head out the door, looking around for who could have placed it there, but whoever did it must have ran away. Carefully, he picked it up and brought it inside, shutting and bolting his door locked.
He set the box on his coffee table. No stickers, no address, nothing written on it. He hadn’t ordered any packages that he could recall, not that he had any money to do so. So what could it be? An eviction notice? No, that would come in an envelope, and he’d been promised one more week to pay his rent. Was it a prank from his brother? Maybe a glitter bomb? That would be especially cruel on Patton’s part, even if he didn’t quite know the predicament he was in right now. So with a tremble in his hands, Logan took the lid off the box and felt his heart drop.
Inside was a tiny piece of metal laying atop some folded paper. It was a bullet. The bullet, still red with dried blood after it had been taken out of his victim. He could feel bile rising in his throat as he looked at it, feeling more nauseous than blood had ever made him before. This was from that man. This was from him.
Logan reached into the box, carefully avoiding touching the bullet, and grabbed the paper underneath. He unfolded it, having to adjust his glasses to read the writing on the page, seeing as his eyes were refusing to focus.
Dear Sir,
You shot me today. I handed you the gun and you did it. Most people would try to run, I think, in your position. But you shot me. I found that intriguing. I hold no grudge against you.
I have made myself familiar with you, Mr. Ward, and it has come to my attention that you are in desperate times. No work, no money, and soon, no place to live. Consider all of that taken care of, on the condition that you and I can come to an agreement. Meet me at the bar at 5th and 32nd tomorrow night, and we will discuss this further.
See you soon,
J
-
Janus rested his leg on the opposite bench from him. It ached terribly, but that always seemed to be the case when getting shot. He would have to put up with it though, he wanted to have a clear mind for this meeting. He hadn’t been able to get his attacker off his mind after he got home the night before, so he had had some of his guys locate him. Logan Ward, out of work former professor, in a tight spot. Perfect.
Something about Logan had caught Janus’s attention. He had a spark in him, some nerve to even try and mug someone like himself. He wanted him around.
Said man entered the bar, looking around. He looked perfectly calm and collected. He had a shirt and tie, his hair combed, his face set in an impassive state. He didn’t look like the kind of person that would be mugging people. Janus waved him over and Logan obliged, sitting across from him. He briefly glanced down at Janus’s foot on the bench next to him, but didn’t mention it.
“So, you shot me.” Janus started off.
Logan cringed slightly. “Ah, yes. I apologize for that. However, you were going to shoot me had I not.”
“Eh, maybe.” He shrugged. “Hadn’t decided. You, on the other hand, did shoot.”
“Why am I here? Are you going to have me arrested?”
“Ah, getting to the point. Maybe I will have you arrested.” He wasn’t really planning on having him arrested, but giving him a scare was a little karma for the pain. “Or, I could give you a job.”
“A job?”
“Yes. High pay, relatively low risk, steady hours. You could keep your home, even get a better one. I know what you’re capable of, I know if it came down to it you would shoot a person to protect yourself.”
“What is the job?” Logan crossed his arms.
“It’s here, in the back room. It’s somewhat of an accountant position, you could say. Handle a little money, file some paperwork, do some counting. You’d get a good percentage, believe me.”
Logan stared at him for a long moment, and Janus felt like he could see the gears turning in his head as he put the pieces together.
“Money laundering. You want me to do money laundering.”
“Eh, I was trying to put it in a more tasteful way, but yes. If you insist on being so tactless. But I think you could do it. You have all the skills I need already. You’re smart, you know your way around a spreadsheet, and you’re not too hard on the eyes, either. So what do you say? Try it for a year, and if you decide you want out, I’ll let you go, no questions asked. Or if you don’t want to, you can always go back home, for the last few days that you have one. Do we have a deal?” Janus offered his hand across the table.
-
Logan looked at the hand as he weighed his choices. Be in crippling debt for the rest of his life, or be a criminal for a year. He felt like this should maybe be a harder choice, but the idea of doing something like this was so tantalizing he couldn’t ignore it. He reached across the table, taking this “J”’s hand.
“Deal.”
Vote on my next AU
Ok so I got 2 ideas for a new askblog. Generally i have a vague plot line in mind but the plot is mostly shaped by the asks. (also more ships can potentially happen than said in this post they’re just haven’t been considered as much)
Liminal sides -  Logan main character. The sides are in long term psychiatric inpatient care run by Patton and Picani. ANGST, but also fluff. Some of the sides are in a DID system so some characters are introduced over time. Big sib Remus, Lil sib Roman. Patton x Picani. Potential loceit. Remy x Remus. potential prinxiety.
After Logan’s grades dropped to nearly all Fs his parents send him to a new type of psychward. It’s only a small section with only a few other patients around his own age. All of them are teenagers stuck in this place that isn’t quite home but home isn’t how a home is supposed to be either. They’re stuck in the liminal. All of them have abysmal social skills as well so they could probably use some help from askers.
Succubus sides - Remus and Janus main character. Much more worldbuilding in this one. Obviously supernatural. ANGST, a few scenes going on whump. theyre succubuses so sex will be talked about but there’s no actual smut. Picani x Remy. Logicality. Close creativitywins. Potential dukeceit. Potential anxceit.
Remus works in the lowest squadron of Succubuses in the Lust circle of hell under the ruling of their manager called Orange. Their job is to convert more humans into committing sins so hell has a bigger number than heaven, sinning through lust is also the only way succubuses can feed. Only problem is that Remus is completely sex repulsed. Meanwhile Janus is a human on earth who is struggling to get through college because of their adhd. Without them knowing they will soon become followed by a demon.
Both AUs got disabled and trans sides C: just tell me whichever ur more interested in
Only Fools Rush In
Tumblr media
Summary: Janus crushes on Logan from afar. He finally gathers the courage to ask him out on a date with some encouragement from his best friend, Remus. For @loceitweek2022!  *:・゚✧
Characters: Romantic Loceit and Remus as your friendly neighborhood hype man
Word Count: 2,934
Genre: College AU, Meet Cute, Library, Romance, Dating, Demisexual Character, Janus pining hardcore
Rated T for language and sensuality
Janus Moretti was pining.
It all started at the beginning of the semester. Janus normally didn't normally leave his apartment to do homework, but Remus had invited a few people from his rock band over, and it was hard to concentrate.
The student library was nice. It had three floors and there was a coffee shop inside. Optimal place for peace and caffeine.
Janus settled at a table and cracked open his laptop. Then, he saw him—a boy with fawn-colored hair and glasses, working inventory from a metal cart. He ran long lines down the spines of each book he came across with great care, as if understood how important and precious each one was before returning them to their rightful place on the shelves. One day, Janus caught a glance at his nametag—Logan.
And, well, that was it. Every single time Logan walked by, his heart squished in his chest. There was something about him that made Janus want to do incredibly sappy things, like press his fingertips between his eyebrows until the furrow melted away or buy him coffee.
Ugh. Feelings.
Disgusting.
Janus' eyes drifted across the room. Logan usually wore button downs, always tucked into a pair of tight jeans and paired with a necktie, but today he was wearing a sweater. It was cobalt and brought out just how bright blue his eyes were.
"Damn it," Janus muttered. "He's so hot."
"He looks like he has a stick up his ass if you ask me."
Janus thwacked Remus on the arm with The Art of War. "Don't bad mouth my crush!"
A slow smile stretched across Remus' face. He was sitting across from him and working on a neon green lollipop, shiny and round like a marble between his teeth. Several piercings dotted his ears, but he wore a dangly silver one shaped like a morning star that glittered whenever he moved.
"I'm just saying," Remus said, wagging the lollipop at him. "He looks uptight as fuck. Who the hell can stand to sit up straight all day like that? I've never seen him slouch once."
"So what? He has impeccable posture."
"Oh, so posture is hot, now?"
"Yes."
Remus rolled his eyes. "You have no clue what you're talking about."
"I have taste is what I have."
"Then do something about it. Go talk to him."
"It's not that easy."
"Yeah, it is. You just go up to him and open your mouth and say stuff."
Easy for Remus to say. He always spoke his mind without caring what other people thought. Sometimes, it was more of a case of brain to mouth filter, but other times, Janus really wished he had his confidence and his ability to bounce back so quickly when things didn't go according to plan.
"I don't even know if he's gay," Janus hedged.
"You'd find out if you asked him out."
"Oh, sure." Janus flicked his wrist. "Let's just gamble all of my dignity and pride. Toss it at the wind!"
"He's got an Apple watch," Remus pointed out.
"That means nothing."
"The wristband is a rainbow."
"That still means nothing."
"Listen, if you ask him out, I'll back you up. If it goes wrong, I'll create a diversion and pull the fire alarm or something. And if he's an asshole, I'll throw a book at his head."
"No," Janus said.
"A real big one. Full of manners and etiquette or some shit."
"Remus, you are not going to throw a book at him."
"Fine. I'll pull the stick out of his ass and beat him with it."
Janus gave a heavy eye roll.
It wasn't as if Janus was shy. He wasn't. He knew how to charm his teachers into accepting a late assignment, how to make someone blush and how to deliver a powerful speech that had everyone holding their breaths and leaning forward in their seats. He was good with people. Sociable. Smooth.
But this ... this was different. This was a like a grade school crush. Janus hadn't had one of those since, well, grade school. Sure, he dated before, but he only went out with men he met online or in class. It was easy to flirt when the person was clearly into him, but Logan was a complete stranger. Janus had no idea how to approach him.
"So," Remus said. "You gonna do it or not?"
"No. I'm too busy."
"Yeah, being a little chicken shit."
Janus kicked him in the shin without any malice. Remus cackled out a loud laugh.
"Excuse me."
Janus froze. Slowly, he turned his head to see Logan standing nearby with the book cart, his beautiful pink bow of a mouth twisted into a frown.
"Can you two please keep it down? We are in a library."
Janus' palms started to sweat. How long had he been standing there? How much had he heard? Had he heard anything at all? Panic flared inside his chest, his tongue moving before his brain could fully process the situation and blurted out: "Yes, sir."
Remus lost it. He fell against the table and started shaking with laughter.
Janus closed his eyes. Fucking hell.
The innuendo was clearly lost on Logan because he looked sincerely confused. "You don't have to call me sir. I cannot be that much older than you."
"I, uh ...Yes. Apologies."
Logan shrugged. He sent Janus one last puzzled look before wheeling the cart away.
As soon as he was gone, Janus dropped his burning face into his hands and groaned. He wanted nothing more than to melt into the floor and die.
"Well," Remus said, still snickering. "That went well."
Janus swatted him with the book again.
***
A week later, Janus and Remus stood outside of the library and underneath an awning to get out of a storm. The rain was coming down hard, bouncing against the pavement like silver coins and drumming over their heads.
"If I had known it was going to rain today, I would have brought an umbrella," Janus complained. He was soaked and wanted nothing more than to slip into something warm and comfortable, but their apartment was quite a walk from here.
"I like it," Remus said. He reached out his hand to catch some of the raindrops like a little kid. He was soaked too, his black leather jacket slick with water and his violet eyeshadow smeared.
"Let's just go inside. We can get coffee and wait for it to let up."
"Good idea," Remus said. "Maybe your Pocket Protector boyfriend is there."
God, he hoped not. Janus would like to look at least halfway decent around his crush. They stepped inside of the library and a rush of warmth instantly seeped in Janus’ skin. He took off his beanie and ran a hand through his damp hair.
And of course, there he was—Logan, sitting at the front desk and reading a book. Everyone else on campus must have gotten the memo about the rain because there weren't too many students here today. His back was straight as a sword, brows furrowed in concentration and beautiful as always.
Remus beamed. "Well, well. Look who's here!"
Janus internally groaned. He hiked up the collar of his jacket and passed Logan as quickly as possible to get to the stairwell. Remus' combat boots echoed as he followed him down to the café. There was no line. The barista punched in their orders and brought them their coffee fairly quickly.
Hot liquid slid down Janus' throat and warmed his insides. He was still soaked. Water dripped off of his clothes and formed a puddle on the linoleum floor.
"Sooo?" Remus prompted. "What are you waiting for? He's clearly not busy."
"He's reading. That means he doesn't want to be disturbed."
"He's reading because he's probably bored out of his mind at work, you dumb ass. Maybe it'd make his day to have a cute boy hit on him. Ever think about that? Huh? Did ya?"
"Now you sound like your brother."
"Yeah? Well, you sound like a wuss. Wuss, wuss, wuss. Mr. Wussyman."
Janus rolled his eyes. "Oh, very mature of you."
"How about this? If you talk to him, I'll give you five dollars."
"Now you're bribing me to talk to my crush?" Janus tossed his head back. "Ha! Please. That'll never work." He took a long sip of his coffee. Swallowed it slowly. Then, "Make it ten."
"Fine. Anything to get you to move your ass already. I'm sick of your pining."
They shuffled back up the stairs. Janus stalled by following Remus to the horror section and browsing for a book to check out. Finally, he settled on The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and made his way to the front desk.
Janus cleared his throat. "Hello."
Logan startled. His eyes immediately glanced over the scar on the left side of Janus' face. It was silver now, a jagged line that slashed from his eyebrow down to his jaw. At a distance, it was hard to make out, but it was much clearer if you were standing next to him. The eye on that side was a bright gold, compared to the right, which was a solid walnut brown. They had never been this close to each other before, let alone talked, aside from the please be quiet incident. This was the first time Logan was really seeing him.
Logan set his book faced down on the desk—The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. "Apologies. How can I help you?"
Janus pushed his book at him. While Logan got to work on checking Janus out, Janus leaned over the desk, trying to appear casual. "So ..." he began.
Logan gave him a sideways glance. "You're dripping on Arthur Canon Doyle."
Janus jolted back. "Sorry." Another puddle was forming at his feet. He scuffed at it with his shoe. "Do you come here often?"
Logan frowned. "I work here."
"I know. It was a joke."
"Oh."
Awkward silence.
"Welp!" Janus snatched his book and forced a cheery grin. "Bye!"
He ran out the library with a bruised ego, internally kicking himself for trying such a cheesy pick up line. Remus paid him only twenty-five cents for such a poor attempt and boilsted up his confidence for when they returned a few days later.
It was another rainy April afternoon. Once again, Janus hadn't checked the weather before leaving his apartment and entered the library looking like he'd just walked off of an intense ride at Splash Mountain.
Janus hastily wiped water off his face. "Maybe he isn't here today."
"Check again," Remus said. He hooked his fingers under Janus' chin and forced him to turn his head. "Calculator Watch at twelve o'clock."
Logan was working inventory again. Outside, the rain hacked against the windowpanes and slid down the glass. Thunder roared, followed by an explosion of lighting, so intense, Janus could feel it in his bones. The lightning illuminated Logan's profile between the aisles, his hip pressed against the side of the book cart and reading the back of a novel, too absorbed in his own world to even acknowledge the storm.
Janus took in the pieces of him—his soft brown hair brushing over his eyebrows, his broad shoulders and long legs, and it felt as if he had been zapped. "Fuck."
"Not yet," Remus said. He gave him an encouraging little push in Logan's direction. "Go talk to him. I'll be hanging around. Moral support."
"Thanks."
"No problem. Gonna grab the biggest, fattest dictionary here. Best to be prepared, in case it goes awry."
Janus was too nervous to even make a comment on that. It took another push from Remus to get his legs moving in Logan's direction. He sucked in a deep breath, pushing down the butterflies in his stomach and plastered on his most charming, practiced smile.
"Hello," he said.
"Hi." Logan turned his head. "You are dripping on the books again."
Janus immediately stepped away from the cart. "Sorry."
Logan didn't respond. The button down he was wearing was well fitted and tucked into a pair of very tight, dark jeans that accentuated his waist and it was just—not fair. Not at fair all. He lifted on his toes to reach a higher shelf, his sleeve shifting down to reveal a stretch of pale skin.
Janus was surprised. "You have a tattoo?"
Logan whirled around and slapped his hand over his forearm. "Yes."
"Why are you hiding it?"
"I'm at work. It's inappropriate."
Janus snorted. "A tattoo doesn't make you less professional, in my opinion. I pointed it out because I thought it was cool, not to get you in trouble. What is it of?"
Logan hesitated.
Janus smiled in an attempt to be reassuring. "It wasn't a trick question."
The pink faded from Logan's cheeks. He slowly removed his hand to reveal a simple chemical formula in black ink. "It's acetylcholine," he explained. "It's a neurotransmitter that plays an essential role in attention, learning, and memory."
"That's interesting," Janus said, because it was. "Do you like science?"
"Yes. I am majoring in Neuroscience."
Holy shit. "That sounds really hard."
Logan shrugged. "Not really. I enjoy the classes."
Okay, okay, so he didn't just look smart, but he was smart. Double whammy in Janus' book.
"Hi, sweetie!" A blonde boy with curly hair stepped next to Logan. He wore a pair of light blue overalls and rounded glasses. A folded umbrella with frogs on it dripped at his side. "You forgot your lunch."
"Ah. Thank you, Patton."
The blonde, or Patton, apparently, smiled and handed him a lunch box. "I see you're busy with someone, so I'll get out of your hair. I'll see you later?"
"Yes," Logan said.
Patton beamed. He gave Janus a polite nod and disappeared.
Heavy disappointment sank in Janus' gut. Of course Logan had a boyfriend. Of course.
But well ... he supposed he couldn't know that ... for certain. At the same time, he wasn't quite sure how to ask. He supposed the only way was to be upfront but god, that was so awkward. Then again, this whole thing was already awkward enough. If he didn't say something then Remus was going to beat his ass, and Janus would always wonder what if. Besides, he had already committed to this stupid thing. If Janus further embarrassed himself then it wouldn't be the end of the world. He would just die in a hole somewhere, but he would be fine. All fine.
Janus crossed his arms and leaned against the bookshelf. "So was that your ..." He hesitated. "Boy ... friend?"
Logan gave him a strange look. "No. What gave you that impression?"
"He called you sweetie."
"He calls everyone sweetie."
"Ah," Janus said, trying to ignore the swell of hope blooming in his chest. "Nice. Very, uh. Good."
"I guess."
"Soooo, do you have one?"
"Have what?"
"A boyfriend."
"Oh. No."
Remus popped out around a bookshelf behind Logan and flashed a wide, goofy grin. He gave a thumbs up.
Janus shot him a very pointed look. Logan's brows twitched inward. He began to turn around to see whatever it was Janus was looking at, and Janus panicked, his mouth moving before his brain could kick in, blurting out, "Are you gay?"
Logan fwipped his head up. A faint blush seared his cheeks. "I don't see how that is any of your business."
God. This was going horribly.
"Apologies. You're right, it's not my business, I meant no offense. It's just—I am. Gay, I mean. Very gay. I was wondering if you were, too. You don't have to answer, I ... I'm sorry."
A long pause. Logan crossed his arms. "Fine. I'm gay."
This was going wonderfully! Remus popped out again and flashed another thumbs up. Instantly, Janus' confidence was back up.
"Excellent! Do you want to go to Lou Malnati's sometime?"
Logan frowned. "Are you making fun of me?"
"I—what? No! No, I'm asking you out."
Logan's frown deepened. "Why? You don't even know me."
Because you're cute and smart and have impeccable posture, but instead he said, "I know. That's the point. I want to get to know you."
"Because you think I'm attractive?"
"Uh, yes? Yes, definitely."
Logan took a second before responding. He shelved one of the books with a loud clunk-ing noise before turning to face him. "I need to make some things clear first before I give you my answer."
"Okay."
"If you are asking me out for sex, it is not going to happen."
Janus choked. The unscarred side of his face burned pink. Still, Logan pressed on.
"I also will not want to kiss you on the first date. Maybe not even the second or the third or even the tenth, if our courtship gets that far. If I eventually do feel a sexual attraction towards you, I may choose then to engage in sexual activity, but there is also a chance that I will never wish to engage in it, despite an emotional component on my part."
It took Janus' brain a second to catch up to all of that. "Okay, are you saying you're ... ace? Is that right?"
"Demisexual."
The word rolled around in Janus' head. He knew what that was. He'd just never met anyone who identified that way before. "Okay. Okay, cool."
Logan lifted his eyebrows. "Cool?"
"Yeah," Janus said, shrugging. "I still want to take you out. I know you don't know anything about me but ..."
"I don't even know your name."
"It's Janus."
"Janus," Logan repeated. "All right. As long as you are 'cool' with it, I accept your offer."
A/N: I wasn't going to post anything because this is unfinished, but I figured I could share this as a WIP.  ^_^ This takes place in the same universe as my Prinxiety fic, A Lesson In Love and Romance, which you can read on AO3. Rating and details are subject to change after I complete the entire fic. There is a playlist which you can find here in the meantime, if you would like.
hello friend!
for your writing thing - moceit (or loceit i’ll let you choose), with numbers 16, 5 and 236
no idea what i’m asking for but have fun LOL
Hello friend!
Loceit + ghosts in love AU [236]
December 2006. College student Logan Winter has a brain aneurysm on the third floor of the Lake Hawes Library. A book on astronomy lays open on the floor in front of him. The book stays on the floor for three days.
June 2010. An out-of-control vehicle crashes into the first floor of the Lake Hawes City Library, shattering one window and striking recent graduate Janus L'Ecole. Paramedics will declare him dead on the scene. He is buried with the library's copy of The Idiot.
The Lake Hawes City Library remains open.
Atlas of the Heavens lay open on the rough gray carpeting. Every now and then, pages turned with a sharp flick as though struck by a short-lived but severe breeze. A faint shape flickered in the breeze from the air conditioner, humanoid, lying on his belly. Logan pushed up his glasses and turned another page.
He grunted at a weight on his lower back, air leaving his lungs in a rush. He had long since given up trying to make sense of his current state (no he hadn't), unable to reconcile reality with understanding. He was dead. He was breathing. Life went on.
Well, he wasn't breathing at the moment. Mostly due to the influence of Janus' weight on his diaphragm.
"You know," Janus drawled, spreading himself over Logan's back, "Rochester has been married the whole time."
Logan rolled his hips a little. "Can I help you with something, starshine?"
"I've heard the most shocking rumor." Janus rolled over, landing on the floor without a sound. He dipped through it for a moment before finding his orientation beside Logan.
Logan sighed and shut his book. "And what might that be?"
"You'll never believe it." Janus' spectral face was lit up in a grin; his brown eyes sparkled in the sunlight from the windows.
Logan had had plenty of time to practice keeping a straight face. He gave away nothing, the way they always played their little games. "Try me."
"Babe." Janus dropped his voice to a dramatic whisper. "They're saying the library is haunted."
Few things were enough to draw a smile out of Logan, let alone a laugh. But the corner of his mouth twitched, a fond light coming into his eyes. "If my calculations are correct, that rumor has been around since early 2007."
"Oh, yes," Janus said, as though Logan had confirmed a point he'd been making. "The kids downstairs said they saw the ghost of a young, devilishly handsome young man."
"Janus—"
"Oh, and some random nerd, too."
"A library full of books and you still feel the need to make up stories."
Janus flopped over onto his back, grin never abating. "Many have said I had a promising career as a writer in my day."
Logan adjusted his glasses again. "I thought you said you wanted to be a lawyer."
Janus sat up and stole a kiss, so quickly that Logan barely registered the fainted brush of lips on the tip of his nose. "Yes, but I could have been a writer. You know, sultry, sordid romances, dead husbands and sanguine ex-wives, that sort of thing."
"I don't doubt it." Logan raised an eyebrow. "Although I do have to ask: 'sanguine' as in 'hopeful' or 'sanguine' as in 'bloody?"
"Oh, pick your poison."
Logan turned back to his book to hide his smile. "You know, I think I have."
MYY forbidden lovers loceit au it was made so I can practice writing & drawing facial paralysis ^_^
The au centers around logan & janus & their friends who r in college. The loceit is like... forbidden in a silly way. It's not serious like "if we love each other we will get KILLED!!" Or whatever its more like "NO you cant be friends with THAT guy, he ate my last poptart!!" Or something silly. Or like "roman & remus got in2 a not-serious fight, so you cant talk 2 janus bcuz hes friends w/ remus & roman & remus rnt talking 2 each other"
Its a silly au!
Janus is the only character whos somewhat developed & logan is the second most developed guy. The rest of the sides r not developed just yet bcuz i literally made the AU like . Two days ago.
EVERYTHING UNDER THE CUT BCUZ WOW THIS GOT LONG
Tumblr media
[ID: a sketchy digital drawing of Janus Sanders from Sanders Sides, cropped shoulders and upm he is wearing something vaguely like his courtroom outfit from the Selflessness V.S. Selfishness video. He has short, spikey dirty blonde hair messily laid underneath his hat sitting straight across his head. The hat has a bright yellow ribbon with pins on them. The brim of the hat has safety pins and beads on strings hanging. Janus has an uneven face, with the entirety of the left side drooping slightly downwards due to his facial paralysis. He has tired looking, dull brown eyes with yellow eye makeup in both corners of his eyes. He has piercings in his ears, lips, nose, and left eyebrow. He has a small amount of freckles on the bridge of his nose. His right side of his face is smiling softly with eyebrows slightly raised, while the left side is relaxed with his mouth being pulled downwards. He has short cleft lip that doesn't reach his nostril. It's hard to see in the drawing, but he has a behind-the-ear hearing aid in his left ear. There is writing that points out everything mentioned. /end ID]
Janus (last name)! He doesn't have a last name yet. He is an aroqueer person who uses he/him labels the only part of his queer identity he labels is the aromantic part, he doesn't label his gender, sexuality, or any other part of his attraction. He is also white.
Janus has Mobeius Syndrome (MBS). MBS is a congential/birth condition that results in facial paralysis. While MBS is usually bilateral, aka affects both sides of your face, Janus' has a rare case of unilateral MBS. This means that his facial paralysis only affects one side and in this case it's his left side. MBS usually is caused by damage to your 6th and 7th cranial nerves, these nerves control your eye and mouth muscles. Along with these nerves, Janus also has his 8th cranial nerve damaged which controls his ears.
This means that Janus is Hard of Hearing (HOH) in his left ear. He has sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), which is hearing loss that affects your inner ear, and he wears a behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid. He also has tinnitus in that ear and because of the damage to his 8th cranial nerve, he deals with frequent nausea and dizziness.
Janus uses a mix of sign language and speaking. Usually he prefers to talk in quiet environments, as it's easier for him to listen and hear that way, but he prefers to use ASL in crowded or loud environments because it's harder to hear and make out voices and easier to focus on the movement of people's hands.
He also has a short cleft lip! This means it doesn't reach his nostril. And he has some "messed up" teeth on his left side.
This design of Janus isn't 100% correct. I want his face to be sharper, instead of round, in comparison with Logan who has a rounder face.
---
Logan [last name]. He also doesn't have a last name.
Logan is a genderqueer aplatonic gay who uses he/it pronouns. He is autistic and rarely, if ever, masks. He is openly autistic literally everywhere. Et also has chronic pain, arthritis, and I think I am giving him dyspraxia.. He uses gutter/platform crutches some days because of ets poor motor skills and balance and to help with ets arthritis.
Logan also has a hand/finger prosthetic and MAYBE a leg prosthetic I havent decided yet. He wears his hand prosthetic sometimes, especially if he needs to use his crutches. If i give him a leg prosthetic, he's probably going to paint on it with some sort of starry space design. ^_^
I dont have a design 4 logan BUT in my mind rn: he is a black man. He has 4c curly hair that changes like once or twice throughout the AU. I know I really wanna give him twists though that are tied up into a ponytail and the sides of his head and back are shaved with some sort of design. He really likes things that dangle and can clack together (4 stimmy reasons) so his glasses have strings with beads on them and have little jewels for decorations. He wears a lot of necklaces and chewy necklaces and his phone has charms on them and he wears a lot if bracelets. He always brings stim toys with him and ear defenders and he has an AAC device if he ever needs it.
Logan's entire face is covered in freckles and acne because OF COURSE!!<3 he deserves it
Janus is very warm toned while logan is cool toned !!
Again, literally no one else is developed. Its just them.
Despire Janus' aromantic identity, Logan & Janus do get into a romantic relationship. Does Janus love logan romantically? Most likely not, he probably feels another type of attraction for et (like sexual or queerplatonic or whatever) or simply wants to be in a romantic relationship w/ et. He might even like logan romantically, but again, he's aromantic & doesn't want to or feel the need to dive any deeper into his identity. So WHO. CARES!!!
RN i want Logan & Janus 2 meet in a library bcuz of course. Janus needs 2 sit somewhere & notices Logan is disabled & immediately forms a kinship in his head & decides 2 sit over there. Disabled alliance. They hang out b4 logan realises "OH. THIS IS THE JANUS MY FRIENDS TALK ABT." & goes "... well they didnt say i couldnt DATE him, they just said dont be FRIENDS w/ him... which is easy becauze I am aplatonic <3" & they go on dates & KISS & ITS CUTE WHATEVER.
24/7: Chapter One
Fandom: Sanders Sides
Ship: Romantic Loceit, Platonic Demus, Platonic Logicality
Summary: James (aka Janus) works the graveyard shift at a open-all-night convenience store. Logan is a college student who stays up way too late, way too often. While pulling all-nighters, he often visits the store James works at. As time goes on, James begins to care about Logan as more than just a customer.
Warnings: Moderate Language, Some suggestive jokes, Mentions of ignorant/negative sentiments regarding vitiligo, Mentions of intoxication— some implied to be underage (please tell me if anything needs to be added)
Genre: College AU, Coffeeshop AU but weird (that’s literally the best way i can think of describing it), Mutual Feelings, Fluff
A/N: — Janus’ name in this AU is James (mostly because when I began planning this, his name hadn’t been revealed). I may still include his name by writing in a name-change but we’ll see lmao — I do not have vitiligo and do not personally know anyone with vitiligo; Janus’ experience with the condition is based entirely on my research. That being said, I did my best to give an accurate representation but I do not claim that it is flawless in anyway. If there are any improvements you think I can make in this area, please please let me know 🖤🖤🖤 Love you all 🖤✨
James’ first shift started normally. That is, as normally as he could assume 24 hour convenience store shifts could be. It’s not like he had much experience with it.
Being his first day, he had assumed that the manager would’ve at least stuck around for a while. Instead, the woman had pointed out the bathroom plunger— advising him to not let anyone steal it— told him how to use the slushie machine, and said that if someone tried to rob the store, let them take the money; she even showed him the quickest way to open the cash register. Then she left within the first hour of James’ shift.
James didn’t mind being alone but he couldn’t fight down the frustration at his manager for abandoning him without actually telling him anything useful. He kept worrying that someone would ask a question that he couldn’t answer. What if the customer got angry and then he got reported and lost his job on the first night? Not to mention every time someone walked in, he was ready to bargain for his life with the $225.67 and a random condom in the cash register.
The adrenaline was getting to his head, stirring up usually dormant worries. He couldn’t stop glancing down at his hands. They were warm tan, patterned at random with lighter splotches. He had a condition known as vitiligo which made areas of his skin lose their pigmentation. For the majority of the time, it wasn’t a big deal; the worst part was the weird looks people gave him and even then, he could usually brush them off. Still, there was always the occasional idiot who felt the need to say something rude or inform him that he showed signs of demon possession. He hoped beyond everything that one of those incidents didn’t occur while he was alone in the store.
Thankfully, the only customers for the next few hours were a couple groups of teenagers at varying levels of intoxication and a traveling family made up of two parents suffering from highway-hypnosis and a small child who tried to climb into one of the drink refrigerators.
By one in the morning, the flow of incoming patrons had completely stopped. By that point James had already thrown back an entire 5-hour Energy drink and reorganized the chip rack— twice .
When the entry bell finally rang again at around two, James’ head was buzzing so badly he wasn’t sure if he had imagined the sound or not. A young man walked in— college aged with messy hair and glasses. He disappeared into the rows of brightly coloured plastic bags without a word and so quickly it made James once again question whether or not he was hallucinating.
It wasn’t until the man had made his way back to the counter, setting down a bag of chips and a couple energy drinks, that James was sure he existed. The man’s hair looked like it hadn’t been brushed in two days and his dark circles were so deep they could be seen from beneath his squared glasses. Yup, definitely a college student.
Despite the obvious signs of exhaustion, the man was undeniably pretty. Counter to his tired scowl, his eyes were bright and alert, framing a sharp nose. The way he kept his strong chin tilted slightly upwards and walked with purpose gave him the appearance of someone who actually knew what he was doing with his life— so basically, the opposite of James.
James was hardly ever self conscious about his appearance but this man— this stupidly pretty, oddly perfect man— made James squirm just a little bit, made him wonder if he was living on one side of some scale while the customer lounged on the other side. James tried to shrugged it off, focusing on the items in front of him instead.
The man spent the entire interaction at the counter muttering to himself and never once making eye contact. It was a little strange, but he was cute and James was bored so he decided to just appreciate the entertainment while it lasted.
It wasn’t until James went to hand the man his receipt that he seemed to even become aware of James’ existence. James held out the thin slip of paper, apparently causing the man to flinch backwards. His reaction was strong enough to make James wonder if he was one of those people— the type that thought vitiligo was some sort of deadly, contagious disease.
His eyes darted up quickly, his gaze sharp as it scanned over James’ face, “You’re not the normal cashier.”
He was taken aback by the accusing tone in the man’s voice, “No, I guess I’m not? I just got hired; the other guy got let off… something about trying to steal the plunger.”
“Oh,” His face transformed into a noncommittal scowl that James simply could not read, “Expect me regularly.”
The man turned on his heels and walked briskly to the door as James stood frozen and mystified behind the counter, “Oh, uh… see you soon then.”
——————
James woke up to the smell of something burning. He didn’t even remember dragging himself home and collapsing in his bed but based on the smell bothering him he evidently had made it back. No one could burn food quite like his roommate.
“Remus what the fuck are you doing?” James shuffled out to the kitchen where his roommate was poking at something on the stove.
“Making lunch.”
Based on his bed head and near-complete lack of clothes (Remus always slept in booty shorts and nothing else) James could guess that he had woken up only a few minutes earlier himself, “Dude that does not smell like anything humans should eat.”
Remus gave him a wicked grin and James decided not to push the subject. He walked out of the room with a sigh and hoped that the smell would clear up soon.
He made his way into the living room, sitting down and flipping open his laptop. James groaned at the lack of new email notifications. No new emails meant no new job acceptions.
“Guess I’m working the night shift again.”
James was grateful he got the job at the convenience store— no question. Getting a job as a college dropout was both necessary and nearly impossible at the same time. He was lucky to get a job at all and being a graveyard shift, he got paid nearly double the normal wage for his position. For now, his sleep schedule would just have to suffer.
——————
The weeks drifted by and James fell into a dull, but easy rhythm. He would go to work every night, spend the hours rearranging chip bags, guarding the plunger, and— if he was lucky— the pretty college boy would come in for a few minutes to grab salty food and a caffeinated drink.
James wasn’t sure when it became “lucky” for the man to come into the store. Maybe it was lucky because he was entertaining, always preoccupied and wandering around the store like his mind was a hundred miles away. He had this odd sort of duality— somehow both spaced out and intensely focused at the same time. It was like he was concentrating on the dimension beyond the one James was living in. He floated through this world, always preoccupied with world in his head. It was endearing and intriguing and James found himself looking forward to seeing the man. James wanted to see the world inside his head, to know what was so captivating that he had no use or interest for what was outside of it.
The student was quickly becoming his favourite customer— something James never thought he would have— and he genuinely enjoyed having a chance to talk to the other guy. He was handsome, obviously intelligent, and, if given the chance, James definitely would’ve asked him out for a drink.
As it was though, James looked awful in his uniform so he would never have the confidence to make a move the only times he ever saw him.
James started to watch for him. The man came at least once a week, always between midnight and four in the morning. He must have lived nearby because he always walked over instead of taking a car like most of the other patrons. Either that, or he lived further away and walked all the way just for a bag of chips and an energy drink.
It was a Thursday like any other when he walked into the store and James’ curiosity got the better of him.
“So,” James leaned across the counter as the man sat his items down, “you come around here often?”
He tilted his head quizzically, “Yes? I do come here often? You’ve seen me.”
“No I— it was a joke,” James resisted the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose. This was… not going the way James would have hoped, “What’s your name? We might as well get on first name basis since we see each other all the time.”
“I’m Logan,” Logan seemed surprised by the question.
“I’m James.”
Logan gave a curt nod, “I know.”
“But— how? I—“
“It’s on your name tag,” And with that, Logan turned and marched out of the store.
——————
Logan laid on his back, arms and legs spread over the entirety of his bed. The only leftover space of the bed was occupied by Patton, one of his housemates.
“So how did the all-nighter go?”
Logan groaned, “Well… it sure as hell did go all night. I’m so fucking tired.”
“This is what you get for viewing the entire American university system as a challenge.”
He squinted up at Patton. With his blond hair and round, smiling face he looked like the direct inversion of whatever pale little zombie Logan currently felt like, “I gotta stop staying up so late.”
“I don’t know, you kind of seem to like it,” His housemate patted his leg and stood up to walk out of Logan’s room, “By the way, where do you keep going? I hear you leaving the house, like, super early all the time.”
Sunlight was streaming through his partially open blinds. It was probably quite pretty but to Logan it just looked like a headache-inducing glare. He threw a pillow over his face, muffling his voice as he answered, “Booty call.”
Patton laughed as he stopped walking, “Yeah right. The day you answer a booty call is the day I will shave my head.”
Logan shifted the pillow slightly to look at Patton again. The man’s hair was his prize possession, like a curly fluffy cloud that he kept as a pet on top of his head. Logan didn’t know how Patton could afford the time and money he put into his hair. What he did know, however, was that Patton would never risk its safety. Logan frowned in (mostly) fake insult, “You really think there’s not a single person who would send me a horny text at three in the morning?”
“Nah I think there are quite a few people who would do that. I just doubt there’s anyone you’d actually find worth answering.”
Was there anyone he would actually answer? Logan stared up at the dark fabric above him. The pillowcase was a deep navy blue and if he really squinted, he could see the weave of the thread, a thousand random threads coming together to make a greater whole. The way the individual pieces created something far larger than themselves was fascinating to Logan. He had never given it much before, but he couldn’t help but wonder if he would ever find a random individual worth making something together.
In the darkness covering his eyes, a vision of the convenience store cashier flashed across his mind. The face he saw was light brown and across that warm canvas, lighter portions sprawled. For the first time, Logan began really thinking about that face. He had sharp features, tired eyes, and when he smiled with lips sloped upwards at a lopsided angle. His skin reminded Logan of the glossy photos of nebulae in his astronomy textbooks— bright splashes breaking up the sameness of the night sky. How had he never noticed that before? What was his name? James.
He heard the creak of their old floors beneath Patton as he walked out of Logan’s room. He probably thought Logan had fallen asleep as he lay there in silence. He was far from asleep, though. His mind was racing, trying to find the missed connections and continually finding new ones in the process. His eyes flickered as previously unrecognized thoughts began surfacing. And they didn’t stop. How had he never noticed?
“I’ve been going to that convenience store down the street,” Logan called as Patton walked away.
James.
Maybe there was someone for him.
Okay
i already talked about a human AU where Virgil, Janus and Remus are the edgy outcasts in high school who are súper intimidating and no one ever goes near them so Logan, in an attempt to escape from the bullies, seeks protection with them offering probably some deal with homework and stuff. and they’re reluctant at first but it’s a win win and also they eventually become friends.
but
what if like the three of them (without logan) graduate before him because they’re older and don’t go to college because they don't want to. or maybe one of them does but also works part time. all of them leave their house or maybe didn’t have a stable home before and move in together while they look for jobs. they kind of lose touch with Logan but they know he’s alright because they taught him a thing or two about self defense.
and a couple years later, when Logan is in college, he runs away, too. unlike the other three, his family was stable, and they had quite a lot of money and everything seemed alright from outside with the successful parents and the prodigy child. but Logan is exhausted of how strict they are and how they never let him rest so he finally snaps and takes his things and goes.
he somehow finds the house where Virgil, Janus and Remus were living in (which is conveniently close to his university) and just arrives without announcement in the middle of the night with this huge bag of clothes and school supplies and stuff.
the house isn’t big enough for the four of them but they make do and don’t mind the lack of space. and it’s a little weird for Logan at the beginning to get used to their weird schedules and habits, but he’s happier than ever and feels free for the first time in his life. and if they had been friends in high school now they’re inseparable.
Allies/Friends/Lovers
Word Count: 1k
Trigger Warnings: Cursing
Author’s Note: Low-key thinking of turning this into a five part series, just saying. Also, @coconut-cluster I’m tagging you in this because it is entirely your fault.
Logan prided himself on knowing many, many things.
These things ranged from lesser-known philosophers to random biology facts, to practically every math formula he’d ever learned. He knew things about people as well, taking note of everything anyone told him after a small disaster involving Virgil and shellfish. He could recite the names and species of each of Patton’s stuffed animals, every role Roman had ever played, and every song Virgil had listened to on repeat for several days because “anxiety brain go brrrr” as he put it.
What he did not know was why on Earth Janus Schwartz insisted on following him around.
Logan sighed as Janus dropped into the seat next to him, hardly glancing up from his phone and giving Logan a nod. Logan knew for a fact that while Janus and he may share a Sociology class but Janus always sat near the front of the lecture hall and on the teacher’s left. So why he was sitting with Logan in the exact middle of the room was odd, barring the fact he had been doing so for the past week.
Another thing Logan knew was that murder was in fact illegal, but he was seriously considering it anyway.
“Can I help you, Schwartz?” Logan sighed yet again, keeping his voice down so as to not disrupt other students as they filed in.
“Nope,” Janus answered simply, taking out his laptop and preparing to take notes.
“Is everything alright with Virgil?”
“Far as I know.”
“Then why do you insist on attaching yourself to me like some sort of parasite?” Logan hissed.
“Because you’re a dumbass and you need to actually talk to people,” Janus smirked. “I figured why not me? We already know of each other through Virgil and based on yesterday’s debate, you’re the only person in here with two brain cells to rub together and create a coherent thought.”
“That was a randomly assigned debate,” Logan pointed out. “You were on my team simply by chance.”
“Yes, and?” Janus raised an eyebrow at him. “I’m gonna come right out with it Collins, I’ve seen you watching me every class.”
Logan practically choked on air and one of the students passing by them to get to their seat gave the pair an odd look as Logan rounded on Janus. Maybe he was paying a bit more attention than was strictly necessary to whatever Janus happened to wear that day, and had already decided he preferred the high waisted black pants and yellow loose-fitting sweater combination over the outfit with the open button-down shirt tucked into light jeans over a white t-shirt, but…
Alright, perhaps Logan had been staring.
“You’re ridiculous,” Logan scoffed.
“I know,” Janus shrugged. “But anyone who will tear apart an asshole defending Max Stirner with quotes, multiple sources, and just plain old logic might be a little ridiculous too, just saying.”
“You did the same with Immanuel Kant.”
“I just admitted to being ridiculous, L, keep up.”
God, he was infuriating. And so ridiculously gorgeous.
“You switched seats in all of our shared classes, just to befriend me?” Logan attempted to change the subject.
“Less of a friendship more like an alliance,” Janus made a ‘so-so’ gesture with his hand. “You and me, we’re the only people here that aren’t complete fools, so we have to stick together.”
Logan opened his mouth to say something, though he wasn’t sure what, but Janus just pressed a finger to his lips to silence him. Just that bit of contact made Logan’s lips tingle as if Janus had electrified them. His eyes widened and crossed in an attempt to follow the finger before he looked back up at Janus.
“Let me finish,” Janus chided. “I’m not saying we have to be friends or anything if you don’t want to, but you’re smart, rational, cool under pressure as far as I can tell. I think we’d make a damn good team. Plus, I like you, a lot actually, especially compared to a few other unnamed people.”
Logan just stared at him as his brain struggled to understand exactly what Janus was saying. He wasn’t an expert in communication or understanding what people were saying but even he thought that sounded less like a proposal and more like an offer of friendship. Janus scooted his chair closer to Logan so their shoulders were less than an inch apart and Logan practically felt his brain stop functioning.
“You have something to say?” Janus asked and finally took his finger away from Logan’s lips and Logan suppressed a shiver.
“Well, I,” Logan stuttered out. Pull yourself together, Collins! “I, you just met me yesterday.”
“Yes, and I would die for you. Next question?”
Logan’s thoughts halted entirely there and Janus failed to hide his laughter so Logan was left to narrow his eyes at him. The professor clapped and settled the students so he could begin the lecture and Logan scrambled for his laptop, ignoring Janus’s quiet snickering next to him. He managed to open a word document as the professor dimmed the lights and turned on a slideshow. He felt a nudge to his arm and he looked over at Janus to see him holding out his hand.
“Well, what do you say?” Janus whispered. “Allies?”
Logan didn’t even pause to consider it, which he was sure he would come to regret later. He took Janus’s hand, throwing every possible consequence and emotion out the figurative window to shake Janus’s hand once.
“Allies.”
Hey I was wondering the canonical heights of everyone in the fools rush in series are. You continually describe each character as the shorter one or taller one and I’d like to know what you feel their heights are.
And if you don’t answer this I’ll continue to believe that Roman is 5’4” and Virgil is 6’6”
tbh i never had exact heights in mind but i kind of love that you imagine that big of a height difference
@5-falsehoods-phonated and i were discussing this and we agree that Virgil would rest his arm on Ro’s head (and false said that Roman would lean his head back and bite Virgil’s elbow when the tol boi wasn’t paying attention). also similar for Re/Pat, false says “Remus does the same thing to Patton but does it when Patton stretches for no other reason other than he can and it makes Patton squeal which Remus finds adorable” and honestly i love that so much i miss writing these bois
anyways in my character descriptions there’s a kind of list of the height order of the sides; from tallest to shortest it’s: -Virgil -Remus -Roman -Logan -Janus -Patton (Emile is somewhere between Ro and Lo’s height, Remy is like at Remus’ height)
i think that i’d stake Virge around 6′0, Remus at 5′10, Ro at 5′8, Lo at 5′6, Jan at 5′4, and Pat at 5′2
....but i do appreciate the massive height difference you mention, so honestly keep imagining them at those heights. i tried to be as vague as possible with their descriptions for that au
[hi go read my completed college au! list of chapters here]
