Sorry, but a certain someone had to be covered by Veronica’s trusty camera after non-canon S4 (which isn’t real & doesn’t exist)

I love Veronica Mars but they did not know how to write a love triangle at all. I didn’t realize that’s what they were even trying to do until I read about more about the show and interviews. Like it’s Logan. Even when she’s with Duncan or Piz it’s gonna be Logan. Because they did nothing with the Duncan or Piz characters. They’re barely characters to begin with. They are boring white bread nice guys with no issues or interests except they like Veronica. No chemistry. No nothing. At least Duncan had a real purpose and storyline and being best friends with Logan and dating Veronica first added some drama. Piz was just there and he liked her and she didn’t care and then she broke up with Logan and she kinda cared? Idk just a rant. Rob Thomas should have focused on other aspects because the love triangles were a fail and a waste of time.

I just started watching White Collar for the first time and a realization about most male written and directed media smacked me DIRECTLY in the face which is that SO MUCH media written by a for men is genuinely just male nerd self insert, non-canon compliant, AU fan fiction??????
Like them writing and creating stories is just “ok so these guys are soooo smooth and well dressed and women just flock to them at every turn and they can get away with anything and everyone believes and supports them when they do mess up and everyone thinks they’re sooooo brilliant”
This media isn’t just portraying women “for the male gaze” it’s EVERYTHING. Everything in these stories is supporting and uplifting mens’ delusions about who they are, how they’re perceived, and how they should expect to be treated. Which is incredibly ironic because anytime media portrays women or the world in the female gaze in a more “in my ideal world things would be like this” instead of portraying us as nothing but weak, broken, unloved, traumatized, victims OR one dimensional sex symbols with no needs or emotions they’re screaming, crying, throwing up about how stupid and unrealistic the story is….
This explains SO MUCH about how male characters are handled in shows like Veronica Mars and Buffy. Even though they’re shows staring women all the “good guys” get the delusional self insert, y/n, AU fan fic treatment (Buffy still wants Angel in season 3 and Riley in season 6 even after everything they did and Xander is CONSTANTLY forgiven for all the atrocious shit he says and does and is wanted by all women besides Buffy. Veronica forgiving Duncan and getting back together with him and even CONSIDERING Piz could truly only be born from men being delusional AS FUCK. Writing how they want men to be treated by women rather than being based in reality and the woman having even an ounce of self respect.)
Which is why the “bad boys”, Logan and Spike are such better characters. They’re so much more realistic, they get held accountable by the women in their lives, have better growth and are just way more appealing and attractive because they’re not the walking embodiment of what MEN want men to be treated and act like.
Oh god this feels like such cursed knowledge to have like it’s important to see this media for what it really is but now watching it feels that much yuckier like finding the porn of someone you DO NOT LIKE but like their emotional porn “this is what life would be like in my fantasies” and they’re the fantasies of the grossest men alive 😭😭😭😭😭
Also it shows their emotional maturity like all of these things are what 13 year old boys fantasize about not actual mature, grown men….
Also just realized this is why the Star Wars sequels were so hated. It wasn’t just Rey being powerful and loved by her found family and Kylo. It was that the movies showed the reality of men like Kylo. They destroyed the male fantasy Darth Vader created. They aren’t super cool, powerful badasses. They’re extremely sad, broken, temper tantrum throwing lost little boys who just want love and acceptance but have lost the ability to accept it because of the dark side (aka the patriarchy) which is the reality and that made me SOOOOO ANGRY lololololololol and this is why Joss Whedon THOUGHT making Spike into a sad pathetic mama’s boy of a poet would make the audience not like him because that DOES work on misogynistic men who enjoy the male gaze but does NOT work and only humanizes and makes Spike even more complex and lovable to the female gaze 💀💀💀💀 oh good lord

thinking of the old days where veronica mars fans were constantly having discourse about Logan beating up Piz in season 3 and whether or not he was bad or immoral for it but no one ever bought up the truest fact: It was really funny.

Doing a little season 3 rewatch of Veronica Mars to make sure things line up right in The Backup and oh boy . . .
So many of my lingering complaints immediately resurfaced there's also stuff I had forgotten about (and even some stuff that rewatching is like "oh, they were actually doing a thing") but here's a couple thoughts four episodes in:
The cast is still too jam packed, the years haven't changed my opinion on that, and it makes so many things seem forced or spread thin.
Some of this is things like spending all this time of Dick but (after an initial episode where it seemed like maybe he was going to have some actual character arc following what happened in season 2) just having him be the same old Dick. Some of it is trying so hard to make Piz matter or whatever. Some of it is no one's plotlines actually truly entertwining.
And you can definitely see the fanservicing rounding off of Logan's character happening, but hot damn I forgot I missed him. Like Rose Tyler of Doctor Who, the fannish monomania over the years has made me reflexively flinch from his very name but Logan is so damned compelling. He's so wounded and self loathing, messy, but also somehow still so tender. A victim of so much loss and abuse and he does fucked up shit and Veronica is right not to trust him sometimes, but he's also just such a damned woobie (I have not used that term in so long I almost forgot it) in the way that is so addictive (and destructive because the impulse is always ultimately to lose all the things that actually make that vulnerability interesting in the interests of saccharine perfection.
My boy, Weevil. I weep. I scream. I tear my hair. I dream of Mars, Mars, & Navarro Investigations. He's flawed and he's angry and he makes mistakes, but Eli Navarro is also so smart, dogged, insightful. He hates injustice, drugs, and abuse. He's crazy hyper competent. want someone to figure out the truth, fix the body of your car, get the AC working? He can do any of that with a facility you didn't ask for or expect. (Maybe don't have him take your phone calls though, at least not without some actual training.) And what does he really want? A chance. The opportunity to do something that matters. Someone to look at him and see something of value (because he sure doesn't right now).
Which really should have been the through line of this season and these characters. Logan is terrified of being his dad, of actually trying and failing at college, of being alone. Weevil is trying to keep his head down and get by, but it is humiliating and awful and he wants so much to prove he is more than that. Like both of them, Mac is afraid she's broken, that she can't move past what happened with Cassidy, that she doesn't know how to be close to anyone. Dick should be confronting the fact that what happened with his brother and dad did shake him and he's not impervious. Wallace's half assed plot line about struggling to maintain both school and basketball could have been so much more about the transition from high school and college and worrying that you aren't actually special or good enough. Even Keith is doubting his judgement, as a professional and as a father to a certain extent. And Veronica, Veronica is afraid that she can't move on: can't trust, can't hold on to friendships, can't move past her high school relationship. But I know that the show doesn't actually go there with any of these plotlines, so to speak. It doesn't have time to, nor does it want to.

keith mars openly preferring PIZ with his 2006 ZAC EFRON HAIR over logan….twisted. twisted behavior. i feel like this was a whole conspiracy against the viewer like they really said on one side of this love triangle you have long term on again off again boyfriend, has been in almost every episode, deep emotional connection, dedicated love and frequent partner/rescuer in crime…and on the other side we have. PIZ. (who she’ll pick FYI)

Question!! I recently started (and finished) Veronica Mara and I am a HUGEEEE fan!!! Logan is my personality currently.
I hate hate hate S4, and not just for that horrible ending. But I did see some people saying a few things, if you could please clarify as a Burnt Marshmallow.
1. Rob Thomas apparently really liked/favored Piz? Is this true and are there any interviews where we can see it? He’s got terrible taste
2. RT, Kristen Bell and someone else I forgot apparently talked down to fans who were heartbroken over the ending of S4?
3. Someone re blogged a post of Jason Dohring being super sweet, thanking and saying the best part of the show was his cast mates. The hashtag the user posted though was basically saying “Move on Jason, these people don’t deserve you because they don’t think of you the same”. Which leads me to think not so nice things about the energy of the cast.
Any tidbits about the show is highly appreciated, LoVe forever!!!!
I might not be the best person for this ask because, while I was a fan, and I did gobble up all the LoVe fanfic I could get my hands on, I wasn't really part of the fandom.
Here was my impression though.
1. RT did talk up Piz, but I don't think that was because he was his fave, but because he was the writer's creation and he had a purpose in the show. He was a nice guy, but he wasn't the *right* guy, and I think that needed to be shown. If Piz was RT's fave, he would have had made more of effort to give him a meaty part.
I do think he may have toying with the idea of Leo being a future partner but nobody was into that idea either.
2. The spin after season 4 was ridiculous and the way RT doubled down on everything was not the way to go. There was an element of 'i'm right and you're wrong' that nobody was buying. I didn't take it personally though. I just thought 'oh, my sweet summer child'. The guy was trying really hard to sell a 'Veronica Mars on the Road' reboot, and nobody was interested. He killed off a fave character for nothing.
3. I will be honest. This wasn't a cast issue, this was a fan issue. I never got the impression the cast had issues at all. Killing off Logan was not a personal thing for RT, it was a logistical one. He wanted to carry on with the VM story but it was too hard to round up all of the original cast for the new show. So he made a decision - dump the ensemble and move on to a show that only relied on the lead. He killed Logan because it would give VM a good reason to leave town. From a writer's POV it made sense, from a fandom POV it was a gut punch. RT undervalued Logan and the rest of the cast as part of the VM story. Nobody was interested in watching a VM show without the other characters. It was the relationships in that show that made it magic. He killed the show.
I'm still mad as hell about the awful ending but I don't think this was a diss on Jason Dohring.
And RT made a bad judgement call but I genuinely don't think he was trying to be an asshole. (Believe me, I'm a survivor of fandoms that had to deal with asshole showrunners. RT is not even in the running.)

fic recs: l/v fic fest, lawyer!veronica fics
In anticipation of the upcoming 2023 Logan x Veronica "New Year, New Fic" fest, I bring you a small selection of fics inspired by lawyer! Veronica fics.
Day 1 of the challenge is February 1, 2023 so be sure to check out the #2023 LV New Year here on tumblr or the AO3 collection for more fic and art.
Tumblr media
As a reminder, there are so many fics that fill these tropes. These are just a smattering, so make sure to make note of the ones you love the most and next week, when the challenge starts, maybe go drop those you love a kudos, a comment, or both to share the joy.
Fic: A Better Claim by @best-laid-plaids Rating: M Tropes and Themes: Movie-AU, Veronica as a lawyer (obviously), Logan in a baseball tee only features once but is very important to me, emotionally fraught phone conversations, absence and distance makes the hearts fonder and the loins hornier Read if: The fic that inspired this prompt and that has a few moments I think about constantly (e.g., the aforementioned baseball tee). Every chapter, every interaction, every moment of this fic feels so earned. Plus, we get to see Veronica actually dump Piz in chapter one, so that's fun.
Fic: Second Chances by kimikochan Rating: M Tropes and Themes: Movie-AU (man I love them) that starts from Keith's accident, a little Justice for Parker vibes, and some hearty lovers to strangers to friends to lovers happening keeping us well fed Read if: You want to see what might have happened if Veronica's return to Neptune occurred because of Keith's accident, not Logan's murder case. Also, you want a little angsty sexual tension (who doesn't?????)
Fic: Between Friends by celtic_flicka Rating: E in one chapter, M for the rest (posted on LJ and marked NC-17 but that seems a lot imho) Tropes and Themes: Post-S3 future fic AU, friends reunited after time, whoopsie we had sex and let's pretend we're still just friends, whoopsie I'm in love with you maybe we can still just be friends? Read if: You're unfamiliar with most LJ fics and you want a good mix of sexiness, domesticity, fun friendship banter, and Veronica and Mac as best buds. Also features fun little additions that worked themselves out of fic between s3 and the movie, like Mac dating Max.
Fic: Prima Facie by @bryrosea Rating: T (for Logan takes teenagers on a field trip and hilarity ensues) Tropes and Themes: Using teenagers as flirt bait, attraction at first sight, both of them about the other "I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it" Read if: You too want this description of Logan to ring in your head for all time - "Tall, well-muscled in a lean way, and with, she can’t help noticing, no real ass to speak of, he shouldn’t draw more than a second glance, but Veronica is uncomfortably sure that she’s been staring at him."
Fic: You Again by Oliviet Rating: M Tropes and Themes: All these two is deny deny deny, 8-years of radio silence and that makes all the difference, did I mention they are absolutely terrible at the denial? Read if: You want a fluffy, smutty, slowburn-ish romp where you get to witness Logan and Veronica sort of luxuriate in their maturity and growth together.
Fic: The Law is Reason by @scabopolis (hey! that's my name!) Rating: T Tropes and Themes: Anatgonistic co-workers bonding over late night woes, movie canon dialogue shoehorned into unlikely places, the talking leads to touching (as in they literally touch hands) Read if: You want to indulge my shameless self-promotion.

i’ll be honest i’m on s3e03 but here’s some thoughts
piz is really adorable. he’s a perfectly sound temporary romantic interest. but the energy around him and V is a guy meeting the first “cool” girl of his life. she’s pretty, she’s smart, witty and different. she’s a college chick. he’s got that innocent, sweet meet-cute-like infatuation with veronica that is wholly understandable.
compared to what LoVe have, their vibe is…immature.
logan and V are so transparently meant to be, they feel tethered to each other. it’s actually so special (mostly due to KB and Jason’s chemistry) and deep. fine, it’s fantastical and romantic for two high school sweethearts, but so what?
it’s going down horribly at the moment. hate how they’re having veronica be so hot and cold with him, and logan being a mostly neglectful boyfriend. what they already have is much more interesting to expand on than bringing other people in to cause an unnecessary rift.
i don’t know, we’ll see.

I hope you can help. I’m looking for a LoVe fic where Logan and Veronica are coworkers and never met in HS. Veronica gets invited to Pizs wedding and he goes as her “boyfriend”. I can’t remember where I read it and it’s bugging me for sure
Yes! It’s Love Me in a Lie by OliveKSmoked written for the FFFD. Great story! https://archiveofourown.org/collections/VMFC_FFFD_February_Fanfic_Fantasy_Draft_2022/works/37414267

I think the reason why Veronica Mars gets progressively less interesting with each season is because Veronica's character is not written consistently. The writers seem to alter her personality to suit the plot which makes it very hard for the audience to root for her and sympathise with her ( especially in season 3&4).
There are a lot of instances where this is very evident.
1. She stands up to everyone including logan and Keith and is adamant to a fault but acts like a 1950's housewife with duncan.
2. The writers paint her as a feminist but she casually slut shames every other women including jackie and Parker.
3. She is a loner and has difficulty trusting people but has no problem in discussing her personal life with leo who she barely knows instead of people like wallace, logan and Keith.
4. The movie tells us that she loves being a pi and solving mysteries so much so that it borders on addiction but in season 4 she seems to hate her job.
5. She gives up her cushy new York job to help the downtrodden but in season 4 she seems to be all about the money and scoring rich clients.
6. Season 1 veronica understood the class divide and was a crusader for justice but in season 4 she shames weevil for making choices to protect his family while failing to acknowledge her own privileged situation.
7. Accuses jackie of cheating on wallace just because she had coffee with another guy while Herself continues to spend time with duncan(at java the hut) and piz (dorm room) while being in a relationship with logan.
Now all this would be fine if the writers treated veronica as a flawed character with her own set of biases but they don't. They talk her up to be a hero who is wronged by everyone for no fault of her own.

Dan Lamb (the original Don Lamb)
Tumblr media
Frankly, I never liked Dan Lamb especially when he was introduced as Don Lamb’s brother in the movie. Like, we never heard about him at all during the series, and I got a feeling that Rob Thomas stole that idea of Don having a brother from many fanfictions including mine. But I can’t prove it, can I. But that’s the whole point of having a one-dimensional character like Dan, so we can hate the character without any doubt or any kind of redeemable aspect. Don might've been incompetent, but at least he was honest. Dan, however, is openly corrupt even in the books.
Don was supposed to be what Dan was when he was written; this asshole corrupt character who laughed at rape victims and covered up murders. But the writers (not Rob Thomas) and the actor himself gave more interesting twists for Don. The results were the character became fan favorites and more two-dimensional, especially the performance.
But that wasn’t the plan. Remember, Rob doesn’t like the idea when everything is not according to his plan. Especially, he doesn’t like the idea of fans and producers preferred something that he’s not planning. Logan and Don were characters he intended to be temporary, not permanent. For the first two seasons, his hands were tied. It wasn’t until season 3, he had a free range to do what he wanted especially after Joel Silver stopped hovering. Him killing Don Lamb was his first step to get rid both character and actor.
Joss Whedon threatened James Marsters when Spike turned out popular with the fans, and there was nothing he could do about it.
Rob felt the same thing, but the tug of war between him and Joel Silver especially regarding Logan prevented him to do anything about it.
How many fics written by fans regarding Don Lamb? A lot. How many fics written by fans regarding Dan Lamb? Almost NONE. And that’s why Rob wrote Dan. Because, let’s face it, he doesn’t want any fans to fix his character. The Lamb brothers are still polarizing ‘till this day. Some fans can’t stand them, which is fine. They are meant to be. Some fans are glad that they are gone. But when talking about polarizing, nothing beats Piz as a character.
Anyway, I digress.
When RT announced that Lamb was gonna be in the movie, everyone was confused, including Muhney. But he tweeted that he would not be in the movie, while RT was silent. Although he didn’t say why he got killed in the series, apparently, Rob told him that he made Muhney famous, and he could take it away as well. The Lord giveth, the Lord taketh.
Tumblr media
Obviously, we heard rumors about the reason why they killed off Don Lamb in season three, even when they already made Michael Muhney a part of the main cast. It took him three seasons to become the main cast, and then they killed him like that. It was shocking, and many fans were confused about why he was killed and didn’t mention it again in the next episode. At. All.
According to behind-the-scenes gossip from LiveJournal, RT just disliked MM. When asked the reason why he killed off Don, he replied that it was all business.
Tumblr media
Rumors were swirling that Rob Thomas had a beef with MM for making the character popular (he wasn't intended to be a popular character just like Logan wasn’t supposed to be popular) plus he asked for more money. Back in season 2, lots of guest stars were paid a lot while recurring cast didn’t. So, instead of paying him more, RT’d rather kill him off.
Don Lamb might not be likeable character, but he was pretty interesting. I still remember when they killed him off, everyone was angry but kinda like... understood. Yeah, he was sorta a villain. But he was on his way to be redeemed? RT has tendency to kill off a redeemed character or not giving a chance to those who wants out from the game.
Tumblr media
Felix Toombs, for example - he wanted out from the PCHers, so he got killed.
Jerry Sacks wanted to come clean about the corruption in the Neptune PD. So he got killed.
Notice how much Rob sweeps those deaths under the rug? He doesn’t want to deal with dead characters. Cut off the arm, and move on to something else. Instead showing the process of dealing with the deaths, he prefers the audience/readers to leap frogged the whole thing. A concept that seems created by a fellow showrunner, Tim Kring.
Same thing with Don Lamb. According to many blogs on LiveJournal back then, MM was a bit an asshat towards Rob Thomas and Joel Silver, but NOT to the cast tho. He was very friendly with Jason Dohring, Francis Capra, Enrico Colantoni, Percy Daggs III, and even Kristen Bell. MM knew that his character was popular, so he demanded at least he was given the main credit and also more scenes instead of being the 6th on the call sheet.
Of course, Rob had all the power. So he fired MM.
Tumblr media
But he still wanted a character played by a celebrity that the fans would like but not get rid of the essence of Lamb. He wanted Jerry O'Connell after he saw his performance in a B-Movie, Piranha 3D - an actor that was big enough of a name that the studio would love. He didn’t want the fans to like him; he wanted the fans to hate him and not write fics about him. He want to get rid of him if he didn’t need him anymore, not have fans clamoring and asking why.
Cut the arm, and move on. That is Rob’s motto. Characters are expendable, especially when it’s not about what he planned.
