Loggerhead Shrike
A cute little songbird, the Loggerhead Strike is known for one particular thing… stabbing it’s prey onto thorns and barber wire. Without large talons to rip into its prey, they rely on this tactic of impaling their meals in order to get to the meat. They’ll impale mice, lizards, bugs, and smaller birds to these thorns. They used to be more widespread in America, however they are now listed as near threatened due to their significant population decrease. Learn More!
Common Raven
The common raven is a very smart bird. They have even been found to be drawn to gunshot sounds, as they know hunters will often kill animals. People have always been fascinated by ravens, and in London it’s said that if the ravens of London tower ever leave the whole British empire will crumble! They’re also seen as tricksters in Pacific Northwest Native American tribes. In one myth, they are told to have brought fire to people by stealing the sun. Learn More! Much More

QUARTERFINALS
Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus)
These little birds know how to use weapons to skewer and tear apart their meals! Using thorns on plants or barbed wire, they butcher animals much larger than themselves by coming at them so quickly that it twists their heads and gives them whiplash. Their hooked beaks are perfect for tearing out the throats of their prey.
VERSUS
Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus)
Their gular sacks look like boobs and they bounce them around as part of their courting ritual. And they make this weird popping noise. Their crops aren’t large enough to digest seeds.

Prairie Poem #6
"Loggerhead Shrike"
Perched atop the buffalo bush
During a midsummer’s day
The shrike observes his grassland domain
Searching, scanning for prey.
He wears a jet-black bandit's mask
To cut through the blazing sun's glare
With sharp eyes, he spots a rock,
And a prairie kingsnake resting there.
Swooping down from his perch,
The shrike goes on the attack—
The kingsnake meets its final fate
Before it has a chance to react.
A fierce predator is this gray bird—
Don't let his small size fool you—
He hunts not only small creatures,
But prey his own size, too.
Impaling it on a thorny branch,
Or stabbing it on a barbed wire—
This hunter saves his catch for later
To eat whenever he desires.
Perched upon the buffalo-bush
Searching, scanning for prey
The shrike observes his grassland domain
During a midsummer’s day.

I drew a loggerhead shrike! So basically, the OC of one of my friends is nicknamed 'shrike' so it stands to reason I draw one at least once! This was done with alcohol markers and prismacolor pencils.

California Quail
With such a distinctive crest, it’s no wonder that the California quail is the California state bird. The males and females have alternating calls, which fit together neatly with one another as they call back and forth. Quails will often take in other quail chicks and raise them as their own. They primarily gain their moisture intake from the insects they eat, since they live in a hot dry environment. Learn More!

BOTD: Loggerhead Shrike
Tumblr media
Photo: John Sutton
"In open terrain, this predatory songbird watches from a wire or other high perch, then pounces on its prey: often a large insect, sometimes a small bird or a rodent. The Loggerhead is gradually disappearing from many areas, for reasons that are poorly understood."
