oh man, those gifs are so old and probably look so bad.

i need to go back and make new ones some day since the gif size is so much bigger now.

but anyway, no, not weird! brood was great and it's crazy to go back and realize how little impact they really had on things in the grand scheme of things and how short of a time they were a unit because it was just *so fucking cool* people still think about it.

Holy crud!

I was watching some speedruns of Sonic Mania’s levels and Oil Ocean gets set on fire in Act 2?!

You know what reused levels could do more often? Twists like that that catch everyone off-guard.

And here I thought it was clever that if Sonic slides down the oil with the fire shield, the slope catches fire!

Haha! Yep. Not only it's just cool to see the oil behave as actual oil, this makes OO2 a reimagining of Sandopolis Act 2 (you need to hit switches to make the fumes go down before they reach a critical point)... and somehow, without earning the ire of fans. The combination of two hated levels, and it's well designed!

Also the remix slaps:

I know that Oil Ocean gets its theme from a scrapped desert level, but it's a wonder that it fits a sweltering oil refinery so well.

But yeah, I appreciate that the devs went for the unpopular Oil Ocean rather than, say, Casino Night, and put effort into making a fun level out of it. I believe it also has better enemy placement lol.

I'm also a personal fan of Flying Battery in the storm, mostly for the atmosphere, although the level itself goes on for a little too long in my tastes.

btw, its Encore Mode palette is for me peak uncanny valley

Oil Ocean shouldn't be set in the bright sunny sky D:
