Continuing with my Avatar generation swap, here we have a group of teenage assassins coming after Korra
Ming-Hua, now a combustion bender. Zaheer, a spiritually-attuned wanderer, P'Li, a lavabender, and Ghazan, their plant (and blood) bender.
I will not apologise for Ghazan. He grows into... all of it.

The LGBTQ+ representation in Legend of Korra is really funny to me because queer women get: the current Avatar, a badass rich engineer and the master waterbender daughter of the previous Avatar. While queer men get... Aiwei.

Lin Beifong - Villain AU
I got the idea from @hummingintheback, this is what I have in mind.
She started plotting her revenge when she met her dad who told her that she was a mistake and he didn't want anything to do with her or her mom. " I was surprised that your mom didn't go through the, you know... the procedure" his exact words
Unlocked her Lavabending after killing her father (He's a Fire bender)
She continued to be Chief of Police while she plotted her sweet revenge because it's the perfect cover and no one would suspect a thing. It also gave her access to all the prison and the information/records from the previous enemies.
She also enhanced Zaheer's Metallic poison, Hiroshi/ Kuvira's mech, and even Guan's brainwashing machine in secret. She used the Sato mansion as a hideout.
She's cunning and manipulative.
She's overpowered and she knows it.
Her goal is to destroy anyone and everything that made her life miserable.
After killing everyone and bringing chaos to her timeline, she plans to ruin other Alternate universes that exist, especially the ones where her counterpart is happy.
I really love this Villain AU idea~ So, what do you all think?

Unalaq is such a funny character honestly like he's such a slippery bitch. Manufactures an incident that gets his older brother banished so he can be chief✅️ Lets the rest of his anarchist polycule take the fall for a plot he was very much involved in✅️Helps imprison them as if he had absolutely nothing to do with any of it✅️ Stirs the pot and inflames tensions between Korra and Tenzin/her dad so he can manipulate her for his own ends✅️ No one was plotting and scheming like him!!!! Nobody!!!!!!!

I know most of you aren't here for my Legend of Korra villain feelings in 2024, but ... lol oh well. I took a break from my dissertation yesterday to write six pages of meta about LOK's main villains and why I think LOK is better for them despite its flaws and frequently uneven execution.
This had always been a show that, for all the centrist trappings, was willing to transform its own setting. It might tapdance around this in awkward ways, like with the offscreen transition to an elected non-bender president, there might be unpleasant side effects like the spirit vines in Republic City, the more drastic changes might be unpredictable or frightening for the characters, and people don’t always know what the political changes they advocate will lead to, as with Zaheer inadvertently setting up the conditions for Kuvira's rise. But I think the overall arc of the show is one of broad and sometimes drastic social change towards a better world.

feel like a lot of people dont realize how much Nickelodeon was gunning against Korra from like. the BEGINNING. they literally wanted the creators to change her to a boy because they were worried having the main character be a girl meant boys wouldn’t watch the show... like this is what they were dealing with production wise 💀

Book one of lok is flawed but watchable, book two is an absolute slog, but book three? Goes so hard. Zaheer is still the scariest villain in the entire franchise, far more than Ozai. Ozai is a mustache twirling cartoon villain, but Zaheer is a very real kind of terrorist, with real beliefs that he would die for. And they're beliefs that have a kernel of sense to them. He has a moral code but he's not afraid to bend it. He respects Korra and feels nothing about killing her. He has loved ones yet no capacity to stop and reflect when they die for the cause.
That's much more frightening than some big bad megalomaniac like Ozai

I very much engage with Baatar and Kuvira from the stance of "pov of the antagonists" I by no means think "oh they're good guys actually" or that they never did anything wrong lol I love when they are sick and twisted. I love thinking about how they brought themselves to where they are. I know most in the fandom are big on villains getting their proper punishments and righteous justice but I can't lie, I love when the villains are villaining and continue to do so and not all conflicts get wrapped up quickly and neatly in favor of the heroes lol like in my ideal world Baatar and Kuvira remain as these two very polarizing leaders of the Earth Nation and that's their legacy on history bc they can't just be fought into submission as the issues they present are too complex and widespread. I was robbed of my cunty villain era for them so I'll be damned if I don't play with it myself lol

Me: I hope I can get something productive done today
Brain: Is thinking about all the nonbenders who were traumatized by corrupt benders who really needed therapy and to have the system that allowed that to happen be dismantled but instead they got sucked into a fucking cult and getting really sad about those thoughts “productive”?
Me:
Brain: Cause that’s what we’re doing all day

Hey y’all, here are some process stages for one of the more recent illustrations I did!
My sketches have never been very detailed. I remember being inspired for a pose while scrolling through pintrest and just threw some lines down on a page. I think more about the general pose and feeling I want more than the worry of anatomical correctness because I know I’ll fix it as I go.
In the next stage I establish stronger more contrasting colors and start to define the form of some shapes. The anatomy is still bad so at this point I’ll start to use the warp tool to move things around and adjust proportions. I also end up using the selection tool to cut various parts of the figure apart in order to put them back together in a way I like (I do not recommend doing this lol the sooner you can establish a solid foundation the better because it’ll save you a lot of work as you go. I just have a really hard time seeing my mistakes until I have something visual to work off of.) I alternate using the warp tool and selection tool and painting again and again until I get something relatively presentable like what I have at stage 3!
At this point all I have left are color adjustments and tweaking some small details. I usually don’t make such drastic color changes at the end of my work because I’ll have found my desired pallet through rendering. However with this one I wasn’t yet sure if I wanted a strong blue bg to contrast the orange of Lucéena’s eye or if I wanted the eye itself to be the main point of color. I knew I wanted the eye to stand out so I thought it was worth trying some things. That’s also why I decided to leave some parts messy in the final piece. I wanted the most well-rendered area to be Lucéena’s face to bring attention to that new shines eye she has.
I hope this was interesting and insightful!
With every illustration, I start off with a loose sketch. At this stage I’m not worried about perfection, my lines are more to serves as composition guides so I know where things will roughly go. If there are parts of the illustration that I know I want to put a lot of detail into (such as the face) I will often give that part more time. Then, I jump into colors by laying down flats behind the lineart and then beginning the process of refinement with a new layer on top. At this stage I would have 4 layers, 1 as the bg color (the blue expanse), 2 as the flats of the character, 3 as the line sketch, and 4 as the rough detailing. After this the number of layers I uses depends on how much of the illustration I want to preserve from itself or how many layer filters I end up using (to tweak color and lighting). Still, my illustrations always start with these 4. Once I get to a rendering point similar to stage 2 I start worrying more about the “correctness” of my structure and how I can make the anatomy more realistic. To do this, I like to duplicate then merge all of my layers, excluding the bg layer. Now I have my character one one whole layer and the expanse of blue on another. I have the individual layers still on hand if I want to refer to my og sketch but at this point having them all as one is easier to work with because to tweak the anatomy of a character I usually cut them up into parts and move/warp them to be more precise. Is this the most effective method? Probably not, but I rely a lot on the warp tool to get the exact shapes that I want. And seeing shapes for me is a lot easier when I have some color and value to work with. (I’m not a very “line visual” person if that makes sense XD) The rest of my process is a combination of rendering and adjusting details with the warp tool. At the very end I did some color adjustments (seen between stages 3 and 4) to see if I could get them closer to the initial feel that I wanted. Because I drew this to showcase Luceena’s new magic eye I wanted that to be the focal point of the illustration. So not only is that the place I put the most detail into, it’s also where I wanted the most color to be. I thought that having a blue bg would contrast nicely with the orange of her eye, but I ended up desaturating the whole piece and let that one note of color stand by itself. Lucéena also received her eye in the Shadowfell so the grey, drab vibes ended up fitting perfectly!

i made these two on landing :)
spoilers below
theory: loki's new horns are a lot less impressive than his previous, and by asgardian standards, even his clothes are very lackluster. yes, he does have a tree growing out of his cape, but he could have been a lot more bold. he had a dramatic clothes change, but he didn't even tell anyone that he was going to do this. a big change from when he commissioned his own play about himself from that one movie. i think old loki would have been like "farewell, all. i will miss you all dearly, and hold you forever in my heart (insert heartfelt messages to everyone in the room)." boy just walked out. iguess the glorius purpose quote really got to him(it def got to me). he realized the way he went out didnt need to be beautiful or whatever. idk
so can sylvie go visit him or what?

Theory about the upcoming adult gaang movie: it will have something to do with bloodbending.
I’ve seen (and had) some conversations over the past few days about why Katara would outlaw bloodbending. As far as we know, she and Hama are the only bloodbenders. Hama is most likely going back to prison and there’s no way Katara would teach or even publicize this skill to anybody, so why draw attention to it by outlawing it? Now people are gonna be curious…
We know Katara has been labeled as a “lead” rather than supporting character in the upcoming movie, so I’d like to think she’s central to the plot somehow. Maybe we’ll meet a younger Yakone and get some backstory for what led to his crazy bloodbending power and perhaps it has something to do with Katara outlawing it. Maybe he heard the rumors from the Fire Nation about Hama, and when he couldn’t get to Hama, he sought out the only other waterbender who had had substantial contact with her—Katara. It could start as an initial curiosity, or maybe he tells her he wants to use it for healing and she naively believes him and agrees to teach him, only for him to reveal malicious intent later that leads to further conflict and Katara’s eventual decision to outlaw it.
I just think it could be a cool bridge between the two series.
