More on the Season 2 Trailer
I’ve stumbled upon the name of the guy that Loki fights at the World’s Fair, and I have ideas. Spoilers for the trailer, casting, and the comic character’s original storyline.
So the guy’s name is Brad Wolfe. He’s an actor, and he stars in Zaniac, the film we see advertised on the marquee in another shot in the trailer. Zaniac is a film about a demonic serial killer from the Dark Dimension (where Dormammu is from) who possesses people and turns them into murderers. This is the comic book history origins (or one of; I imagine he shows up with many origin stories) of Jack the Ripper. Now, while Jack the Ripper is about the right time period for when Loki and Mobius are during these scenes, it’s not the right place. As I stated in the trailer reaction post, they have to be in either St. Louis or Chicago (I’ll restate why in a minute), and Jack the Ripper hunted in London.
Brad Wolfe originates in a comic run in the 80s, and as I said he portrays Zaniac in a movie that’s filmed in Chicago (so now we’re in the right place, but the wrong time). But Marvel wiki states more specifically, “the University of Chicago, the site of early experiments for the Manhattan Project.” The Manhattan Project takes place during World War 2, but “early” experiments could take place in the 1930s (in comic book world; I don’t think it started that early IRL). And, if I’m understanding the summary correctly, there’s apparently some leftover nuclear stuff in the university that explodes and the shock of the experience makes Wolfe think he’s Zaniac (or actually gets him possessed or something). So with the 30s and the Manhattan Project, we’re getting closer to the time period we need, because there were two World’s Fairs in Chicago, 1893 and 1933.
However, that brings us back to why we can only be in St. Louis or Chicago for this World’s Fair. We see the Ferris Wheel, and (most important for placing us in time) it is explicitly called a Ferris Wheel. Which not only narrows it down to St. Louis or Chicago, but also to the 1893 World’s Fair and the 1904 World’s Fair. So it can’t be 1933. So once again, Marvel’s either taking some liberties with history and/or characters from comics, or they didn’t do any fucking research.
So assuming they’re smarter than they’ve proven to be in the past, and just want to play around with their characters, I think this is Brad Wolfe, and he is being possessed by Zaniac (or something happened that made him think he’s Zaniac like in the original comics). And either in the MCU he lives several decades prior to his lifetime in the comics, or he’s time traveling (or time slipping?) and that’s why he gets taken in by the TVA. But instead of becoming Jack the Ripper, this isn’t 1888 London. This is 1893 Chicago. And 1893 Chicago’s got its own serial killer problems to deal with.
A Devil in the White City.
HH Holmes.
It’s Chicago, I’m still sure of it.

Me: *incredibly disappointed by the dumpster fire that was the Loki show*
Tom Hiddleston: I’m sorry to hear that but I’m playing a pastor in my next show, maybe that might be more to your liking?

Where Have You Seen Loki Season 2's X-5 Actor Before?
This post contains spoilers for the season premiere of "Loki."
"Loki" is back this week, and along with the return of Norse trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), and the rest of the Time Variance Authority, the show's premiere also sees the introduction of a few new key characters. Among them? Ke Huy Quan's helpful, tech-savvy Ouroboros (or O.B.) and X-5, a mysterious new TVA agent played by Rafael Casal. And it's the latter who is particularly intriguing.
So far, we haven't seen X-5 do much besides question whether jet skis are part of the sacred timeline, but the character already seems to be an agitating force within the organization. He's also quite possibly poised to become a recognizable Marvel villain. After all, a featurette for the second season had a couple bits of footage from behind the scenes that showed him in a TVA jumpsuit, as if he was being held prisoner. So that should be interesting to watch play out. But there's more.
As /Film's Sandy Schaefer pointed out back in July, the trailer for "Loki" includes a poster for a movie called "Zaniac!" which fans have tied to Casal's character via leaks and speculation. Zaniac is a noteworthy character in Marvel Comics, though he bears little resemblance to X-5. The character was an evil entity that possessed the man who would become Jack the Ripper, and later took over slasher actor Brad Wolfe.
Ahead of the show's premiere, Casal has been credited by several outlets as Brad Wolfe, not X-5, so it seems likely that he could play out some form of the Zaniac plot this season. Regardless of Casal's true role in the show, though, he's an excellent multi-hyphenate artist whose past works deserve attention.
If X-5 looks familiar, it's likely you recognize Casal from "Blindspotting," a fantastic 2018 musical comedy-drama that he co-wrote with longtime creative partner Daveed Diggs (yes, of "Hamilton" fame). "Blindspotting" was a labor of love for Casal and Diggs, who also produced the film about two best friends living in Oakland, California whose lives are disrupted by the broken policing system. As serious as that sounds, "Blindspotting" is also laugh-out-loud funny, and Casal is a totally charming standout as hot-headed Miles.
The performer reprised the role for Starz's "Blindspotting" TV show, which ran for two seasons and was recently canceled. A criminally underseen hidden gem of a series, "Blindspotting" takes place after the film and puts the focus on Miles' girlfriend, Ashley Rose (Jasmine Cephas Jones), as she parents the pair's young mixed-race son in a racist world, all while Miles is behind bars. Despite his character's incarceration, Casal still appears in the show frequently and his hilarious, soulful character is a fan favorite. If you're looking for a thoughtful, entertaining, dynamic watch – or just want to see what Casal's made of – you can't do much better than either iteration of "Blindspotting."
The performer has also made a name for himself in other projects, including several collaborations with Diggs. A poet and rapper in addition to his acting creds, Casal appeared on three seasons of "Def Poetry Jam" on HBO, released a mixtape with Diggs in 2010, and contributed to the soundtracks for "Blindspotting," including in the catchy (and foulmouthed, fair warning) song "Easy Come, Easy Go." He reunited with Diggs in the acclaimed 2020 miniseries "The Good Lord Bird," a wild historical fiction series led by a fiery Ethan Hawke. Casal and Diggs even started a public theater project called Bars Medley, which remixed classic literature into musical performances.
Other on-screen works of Casal's include a supporting role in the 2019 Hugh Jackman flick "Bad Education" (he played the love interest of Jackman's closeted character) and a multi-episode turn in the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" revival. Casal played a ringmaster named Mr. Tophat in the reboot of the classic, kid-friendly horror series. Next up, Casal is appearing in "Wildcat," a biography of Southern Gothic author Flannery O'Connor that's directed and co-written by Hawke. The X-5 actor plays a character in one of O'Connor's short stories in the movie, which premiered at Telluride but hasn't been released to the public yet.
Whether X-5 is a frustrated TVA employee, a secret evil entity, a movie actor, or something else entirely, it's exciting to see an artist as talented and versatile as Casal take the stage in a major Marvel series. You can catch his next moves on Disney+, where new episodes of "Loki" stream Thursdays at 9pm ET.

https://gamerant.com/loki-season-2-mcdonalds-partnership-sylvie-details/
There's such an insanity in this. The fact they are taking this so seriously and expect the audience too as well. Like, people don't fondly look as product placement as something positive in movies and tv.
GotG works because stuff like 80 music and aesthetic is something that can be liked even if one doesn't have personal nostalgic attachment to it. And it is music, aesthetic and pop culture that people do form attachment to and keep in their lives.
For most McDonald is not some warm nostalgic experience people think of. It's thought of as cheap, unhealthy and more often than not poor quality food. No one attach is themselves to eat fast food chain like they attach themselves to their music. It doesn't inspire people like movies and tv can when writing their own stories.
Like, Wanda finding comfort in watching sitcoms is a thing people do. Sylvie finding comfort in working for a fast food chain is a joke and them taking it so seriously just makes even more of a joke
Yeah, it is kind of weird. You think maybe it's an American thing? Maybe they feel some kind of attachment to McDonald's for some reason, but I doubt the rest of the world gives a damn. It's just one of a million other fast-food joints that I particularly never go to. If I go fast-food, I'm buying pizza, baby.
I wasn't watching the MCU back then but did they make such a huge fuss about Stark eating a burger back in IM 2? It's like they're trying to convince the audience that this has a deeper meaning or something. Wanna give it an emotional angle? Do it in the script! The fact that they're trying to sell this so much and so repeatedly kind of makes me think they didn't do a good enough job of it in the episode and they're trying to cover their asses or something.
Anyway, Sylvie is not human. She could find those families with kids at a park or coming out of school, the McDonald's thing was done for marketing purposes and that's it.
I gotta say though, this part in that article is bothering me:
"The season 2 trailer indicated that he (Loki) is having an issue with time slippage, and there would be no individual better at understanding the problem than a person who spent her entire life hiding in the timelines."
Sylvie knows nothing about that. She didn't even know magic didn't work at the TVA. She's not some expert about timelines and time shenanigans, she was only at the TVA for a few minutes as a kid. Loki said in ep2 he had been watching videos regarding those aspects of timelines, etc so if anything... he knows a lot more than she does. But S2 is going to be more of the same, I'm afraid. Loki being clueless and Sylvie showing how much more than him she knows.
PS. Isn't this show supposed to be about him? Yet all articles I've seen talk about her. Why don't they change the title of the series? Oh right, it may not sell as well...

I would like to convey how truly insane the last few months have been for me on a queer/pop culture/adhd hyperfixation level (it's a long list):
april/may ish: ted lasso s3. trent crimm, fav character since s1 is confirmed to be queer - something that I had quietly headcanoned but didn't think would actually happen in the series
july: wwdits s5. (I learned how to pirate tv shows for this one.)
also july: good omens s2. (it was fun and gentle and romantic until I discovered that ofmd s1 prepared me for the emotional destruction of that last episode)
also in july: grandson concert!
end of august. ofmd s2 trailer.
september: taskmaster s16 starts! very fun and very homosexual
the stressful hour in september that was getting noah kahan concert tickets
then came october. three shows all started within the same two days (all are massive hyperfixations)
oct 5: our flag means death s2
also oct 5: loki s2 (literally didn't know about this one until the day of lol)
oct 6: bbc ghosts s5
also october: the magnus protocol trailer
I think the loki s2 finale should get it's own point on the list due to how much mental space it occupied.
writers and actors strikes end! the amount of ofmd s2 bts content was and still is absolutely wild
november: the ballad of songbirds and snakes movie!
and now I just found out that amulet book 9 is being released in february 2024. somehow I missed that announcement from a month ago
in the upcoming months, so far its looking like:
bbc ghosts s5 christmas special
the magnus protocol
the final amulet book
noah kahan concert

My humble thoughts on The Marvels
Tumblr media
The Marvels is a fun, brisk (perhaps too brisk), light-hearted buddy super-herione adventure. However, the things that Marvel has been struggling with lately are unfortunately still in the play with this sequel. The plot is pretty thin and the villain is another of Marvel's typical shallow, one dimensional type baddies. While we can certainly understand and even sympathize with Dar-Benn's motivations and why she's doing the things she's doing in this film there just isn't enough meat on the script bones for actress, Zawe Ashton to work with although she well with what she's given. The same goes for the plot. The acts that the villain is perpetrating on the planets and its people in this film definitely qualify as high stakes material but the film's pace is so rapid that it ignores any opportunity to show some emotional stakes for the victims of the villain's atrocities.
So while the film downplays these aspects it chooses to focus more on the relationships between the three heroines. In that respect it does a decent job of bonding these three young women along the course of the film into a sisterly dynamic. Each have issues with each other positive and negative and by the end they've been able to work through their issues and understand each other better. Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani have good chemistry together with Iman continuing to charm and delight as Kamala Kahn/Ms. Marvel. Sam Jackson is great as Fury as usual and has some of the funnier lines in the movie. And let's not forget Goose the cat/flerken who kinda stole the show in the first movie. She's back and is involved a lot more this time to equally humorous results.
I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the fights in this film. I thought they were hard hitting, well choreographed and fun to watch. The fight between Monica and Kree soldiers in the Kahn's house was a stand out sequence which I thought made clever use of her powers. The end fight between the trio and Dar-Benn was also equally exciting . The visual effects were very good and consistent throughout which is another area where Marvel has been struggling lately. With this film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Loki Season 2, the VFX quality appears to be back on track.
Honestly my biggest gripe would be with the marketing department for this film. The amount of trailers, tv spots and clips released for this film was ridiculous. I only watched the first two trailers and maybe a couple of the tv spots and I felt like I had seen most of movie already. I watched the rest of the clips afterwards and was shocked at how much more of this movie was spoiled in the clips I hadn't watched beforehand. Even the surprise cameo and part of the fricking post credit scene was shown in a couple of the spots! If you're someone who did watch every bit of footage that was released I can honestly say you saw most of the movie beforehand and that's unfortunate. Given the film's short runtime you can rest assured there was a lot of material cut from the final film. I've already noticed a few things that were in the marketing footage and test screening leaks that were missing from the final cut.
Overall, despite a simplistic story and a forgettable villain this movie is still a lot of fun. While it is mostly standalone in nature, it is also very much a sequel to not only Captain Marvel but WandaVision and Ms. Marvel as well. (Surprisingly there's zero reference to Secret Invasion despite the Skrulls having a role to play in this film but that's probably for the best given how poor that series turned out to be.) The post-credit scene however is a game changer and hints at some exciting possibilities to come. ⭐⭐⭐
