identification series: Jane Marple and MILK Tulip Cutsews
Hi everyone!
One thing I personally love about buying oldschool lolita is finding older, undoccumented/unheard of pieces for your wardobe. There is something quite mystical about the ~mystery~ of an un-archived item found second hand that can lead you on a rabbit hole of searching Lolibrary, street snaps and web archives. Sometimes you come back out with results - ie you have found the release date - or you come back with more questions than awnsers.
For my lolita blog posts I thought I would make a mini series where I talk some mystery pieces and how i figured out the date, and to start off I have decided to talk about a couple of tulip cutsews I purchased on lacemarket. I will also link below all the pages I use to find my old pieces, aswell as the link to donate to Lolibrary! Also please be aware that I am very much a newbie to identification and am no expert! "^^
full post under the cut~
I fell in love with these two tulip cutsews that I purchased on lacemarket a couple of months ago, with a presumption that they are from the same brand due to the motif, colours and motif placment being so similar (rookie mistake!). When they arrived and I tried them on I figured out from the fits being different when worn, they must be from two different brands. Once looking at the tags I figured out that the left is from MILK and the right is from Jane Marple.
For this identification I mainly used Lolibrary and the Lolita Fashion History webpage, aswell as some help from the What is That Dress Facebook page.
Finding out the date of the Jane Marple cutsew was pretty easy, as it was already doccumented on Lolibrary as being released in 2005. I am very excited for the matching socks in the black colourway to be arriving soon!

However the MILK cutsew took a little bit longer, this was my first time trying to find the date of an older piece, so I got alot of help from the people in What is That Dress on Facebook. In CUTIE's 1991 issue there is a section showcasing MILK's 1991 Spring collection, which showcases the same tulip motif which I found on lolitahistory.

Aswell as this, there is a tulip cardigan from 1991 on Lolibrary with the same motif, so this solidified the release date of this cutsew being from 1991. I am still incredibly excited about this, as the cutsew has been really well looked after and isn't faded at all! However this wasn't enough for me, as I really wanted to see a picture of the cutsew itself from around that time in a streetsnap or collection.
(the washtag is also super faded, which made me suspect that it is quite old)
I did some searching about lolitafashionhistory, Lolibrary and Google Images searching the cutsew, but unforunatley I wasn't having much luck untill I was on Tumblr and came across this street snap from 1994's CUTIE in the white colourway (which is also on Lolibrary but i guess that I missed it lol). Hurray! Though it can be presumed it's from the same collection, something about seeing a picture of it worn around the time of production is just so exciting.
A final ~ theory ~ I have for the end of this blogpost is a tangental side track I went off when trying to find the date of these items. Jane Marple also released a 1995 spring collection based around tulips, which can be seen here

I personally wonder if the motif Jane Marple and MILK used are from a stock image printing pack or something, as the style and colous of the tulip motifs are incredibly similar. This sent me down a train of thought of trying to figure out the places of production for these releases, but I didn't manage to get anywhere to validate my hypothesis "^^
What do you think?
I hope this was interesting to people who are also interested in the history of your lolita wardrobe, or any wardrobe in general! ^^ And if some mystery person has any lead on early 90's Japanese tulip collections, please let me know haha. I am going to link the Lolibrary donation page below, aswell as the resources I used to find the archive of these cutsews!

so recently i came across this lolita wardrobe dress (in a goodwill of all places) and bought it immediately. this was my first time ever buying anything lolita fashion and it was actually affordable! only 14 dollars for such a high quality garment!! when i bought the dress i didn't really think about if i could wear it. so this poses the question of: is wearing qi lolita as a non chinese person appropriation?
as much as i love this dress the last thing i want is to appropriate someone's culture so i will sell the dress if i have to!! pic of the dress below the cut since this post is getting kinda long

Hey all! Still breathing!
We've been working on The Move still and prepping, so everything hobby wise that's not at my computer has been put on the back burner for the time being.
That is to say, this blog was also back burnered for a while. I may be back soon, or this may just be another failed attempt at social media-ing. Hopefully it's the former. 😊☺️
