If you finish the Kindred series, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. I have finished the first 5 episodes and am massively disappointed so far. It doesn't seem to do the novel justice. I wanted to get more of the perspective of the enslaved people and Dana's introspection. I didn't mind the modern setting, but I didn't like that Kevin and Dana were no longer a married couple with shared intimacy and history. I recall a scene from the novel where Kevin says something along the lines of the conditions of the enslaved people not seeming as bad as he would have imagined and the ensuing tension that caused between the two. It seems like Octavia Butler's fantastic material has gone to waste. I can only hope future adaptations of her work are better.
It really felt like the producer set out to translate or make the material more understandable/digestable to a viewing audience, which came off to me as dumbing it down...(which is always a mistake, or the reason why animated movies for kids written to grow w/ you instead of being written down "to kids" end up being classics) Because that's literally what he did... And now, the logic, which was so tight in the novel (Butler was notorious in keeping the plot tight) suffers in the series. Now... It gets spoiler-filled and yelly... apologies, ahead of time. The connection/audience investment the producer sought, was already there in the growth & connections of the characters, right along w/ the readers being in Dana's gaze in her empathy and helplessness in trying to help people in a futile and spectacularly soul-destroying system (HOW DID THE PRODUCER NOT GET THAT?!). The fact that the centered characters Dana interacts w/ most, start out as children and we watch them grow to adults; shift and get shaped in that hellscape of systemic slavery IS THE DAMN HOOK!! The characters (Rufus, Alice, Nigel, Sarah...and even Kevin being there so long....) is all he needed and that's where his focus should have been.
Instead he tried to answer questions nobody asked and ended up creating more questions...i.e. He tried to explain the time travel with some kind of generational power by adding Dana's mom to the plantation. But that doesn't make sense because you're telling me Dana's mom never felt her life threatened ON A SOUTHERN PLANTATION for over ten years... You're also telling me she materialized there SLAVE PASS-LESS and somehow ended up being free...itsjustnotrealistic.gif!!! Kevin and she just had a vague connection via ride home/Tinder hook-up in this Hulu iteration, and you mean to tell me he stuck around through all the weird yelling and dematerialization?!! THERE IS A REASON why Butler had them married and that investment being believable is a big one!!! I mean, sure whiteness lends a kind of reckless curiousity but NOT THAT MUCH, DAMN!
Now that the producer added the complication of the mom going forward in time after touching her BUT ENDING UP SOMEWHERE ELSE (a thing that really happens in this show lolwtf?!), that big life-changing ending for Dana, won't make sense. All of the connections w/ the enslaved characters don't feel substantial enough, because this man wanted to spend time *fixing* the fucking time mechanics instead...Nobody cares why the zombies are zombies in Night of the Living Dead!! They care about the characters, their connections, and how they survived or didn't.
Also! Kevin not being a history teacher made them more bumbling than believable to other characters in that space, and his lack of anything beyond that tentative first surface connection to Dana makes him being left less tragic and investable... and how Dana acts toward him REALLY STUPID in that era!!
*sigh* That said...I thought the casting, effects, and that spare synth track was okay.... The writing and plotting/direction just sloppified, what Octavia Butler made *incredibly* tight. It should have been a limited series focused *hard* on watching these characters change and devolve because of the system they existed in. Not a mystery about why this family has time travel powers. The producer really couldn't see the forest for the trees. I'm just... How did he mess this up?? It was so easy to get this right, if he actually liked the fucking novel. *smh*

i made...a bit of a booboo in our d&d game today lol
so, i play a drow. in my youth i heard about the god eilistraee and began secretly worshiping her. i also began a relationship with another young drow woman about my age. as we came of age i decided to tell my partner(ish) about eilistraee; well, she did not take well to this, tried to kill me, and then alerted the elders of our community. i was able to escape, spent 150 or so years in a criminal city in the underdark, and have then been top-side for the last two or so.
well, we’re a few months into our adventure and in this new town i see another drow (the first we’ve seen) with a bracelet with the crest of the family of my old partner. i leave the bar before starting anything.
i asked one of our party members to stay back in town with me since it sounded like everyone else was set on going back to our keep. so, i’ve got a paladin bud hanging out at a nearby bar.
then come back the next night and straightforwardly go up to have a conversation with her. turns out yep all of my family is dead, my old partner is dead, and their family has been exiled unless they can sow sufficient chaos in the name of lolth to right their name.
well, meeting her immediately added me to her “kill-immediately” list. we separately leave the bar and i catch no sight of her as the paladin and i head back to our inn. not 20 minutes after we settle in to try to sleep we hear an awful sound as a yochlol as summoned into our room! we, uh, freak out and our dm looks terrified about what he’s about to do, letting on that this other drow is floating outside of our bedroom window, ready to make her way in (”this fight isn’t a problem for a group of five but for two...it’s deeaaaadly”).
i cast web to try to stop the demon and drow but still get attacked (60-70 damage in one hit before my resistances; my max hp is 81); the paladin and i are both running as quickly as possible into the hallway to try to get to the dining area of the inn and into a crowd where others could help. WHILE we’re doing that, she thinks to yell into the sending stones we just bought THAT DAY to our friends at the keep, who get pulled into initiative order and use sending to call in some friends we have in the city; i’m running and yelling prayers to eilistraee to please aid us in our fight against the servants of lolth; our cleric casts divine intervention and FINALLY passes the check; i pass a dominate person saving throw (a dm treat in direct response to me dominating his character and killing him friday night in a call of cthulhu game :)) with a nat 20, divine intervention passing sees rhae teleport our friends into the hallway with us, i get a natural 20 on a religion check from praying to eilistraee, the paladin triggers her aasimar wings/radiant soul, and we go to town on the yochlol; i get an extra 4d6 radiant damage from eilistraee’s aid on my next hit lolwtf. (all of this happens in like maybe 4 rounds of combat)
we kill the demon and try to chase after our new drow enemy but she goes invis and escapes into the night.
in our mission we have two more items we need to retrieve and one is in the underdark so it’s time to expect more eyes on us, i guess!

I have a silly and completely unsubstantiated headcanon
Specifically, that Cassian doesn’t like drinking and he doesn’t like crowds and his interest in food is pretty much entirely confined to nutritional value and the whole concept of a pet is surreal and he doesn’t really get 99.95% of space music—
—but he does really like flowers.
Backtracking, this is someone who dresses for Jedha like it’s Hoth, so I always vaguely assumed he was from somewhere ... well, Hoth-like (yes, I know about the EU stuff). Tiny Cassian probably had never seen a flower in his life before, um, he traumatically lost everything and got picked up by the proto-Alliance. So he’s swept up with other war victims, and while some can be resettled, others have nowhere to go, and the first Rebel base actually starts as a sanctuary for these people.
(I imagine it’s a well-intentioned mess, but that’s besides the point.)
Anyway, I was imagining that this place is a converted summer home or something, and Cassian is so shell-shocked that he doesn’t register much until the flowers catch his attention, especially bright colourful ones (space peonies!). And while obviously he’s never in a place to garden or anything like that, in his bleak joyless life he does retain a lingering fondness for healthy flowers (they’re metaphors for freedom, okay and bright and cheerful!).
Jumping ahead, I imagine that he and Jyn end up on a mission that takes them through a market in some warm green place. And there are merchants hawking various things, including a “flowers for the lady??” one. Jyn is like “lol no” but they need to ~look casual~ so Cassian “pretends” to be very interested in the flowers and seriously considering them until their contact shows up.
She’s baffled but Not Fooled, and makes a remark about how Draven’s budget is tight but a daisy probably wouldn’t break it.
Cassian: I don’t know what you’re talking about. .....And cut flowers just die, anyway.
A few missions later, she snags Bodhi on some errand while the others are refuelling and then waiting, and Baze is “well, whatever you two were up to, it better be worth i—what????”
Cassian and Kay are busy with takeoff, but once the ship is safe in hyperspace, they go back to see what on earth was going on, anyway. And there’s this sort of confused chatter and then they can see Jyn and Bodhi in full victory mode, though Bodhi is tall enough to block most of Jyn.
Baze or whomever is “do you know something about this, captain?” and Cassian is completely bewildered until Jyn turns to him.
And she just goes “here” and marches over, shoves a potted plant at him, and pushes everyone aside to go Check on Something on the other end of the ladder. The others mostly laugh it off as some weird Jyn thing, and Cassian’s there with soil on his jacket, an unidentifiable tiny sprout in a pot, trying to understand what just happened (Bodhi isn’t talking).
And he goes along with it out of sheer ?????, but privately he’s enormously touched, both by the fact that Jyn went out of her way to give him anything at all, and because it is the actual? greatest?? gift ever. Mystery Plant goes everywhere with him (where he’s posted, or in his ship when he’s on a mission/in an inhospitable environment). He waters it before he drinks for himself, and sets up a little area with a lighting system, gets bigger pots as it grows, and basically raises it like it’s his child.
(For her part, Jyn is super touched by this. They never talk about it.)
Once everyone gets over the lolwtf, it becomes this weird sort of team mascot. Jyn is smug and Chirrut goes on about how the Force binds together all living things and Cassian begrudgingly lets the others water it. (Bonus if it ends up being something completely inconvenient. Like a space!sunflower.)
In the end, once Cassian is based on Hoth, even the spaceship won’t be able to protect it. Baze and Chirrut can’t stand Hoth, so Cassian reluctantly relinquishes the family pet plant to Chirrut’s care, with a lecture on its proper care and feeding, and YOU SAID IT’S PART OF THE FORCE TOO OKAY SO REMEMBER TO RESPECT ITS NEEDS.
(Baze complains, but they’re actually excellent plant foster dads.)
Anyway, this is the deep analysis you’re here for~
#the alternate and first variant of the headcanon#was that every time they have a fight in which jyn does feel herself in the wrong#she doesn't apologize because apologies are more or less a form of talking about feelings and that does not happen in jynland#but flowers just inexplicably show up where he's going to be - sometimes in his quarters sometimes in his ship sometimes in the base#except when they're on hoth of course#which is deeply frustrating#jyn would rather communicate by flower ANY day#(now i'm picturing jyn developing a flower language that has nothing to do with actual flower language#but like. a single daisy is a begrudging 'not apologizing but i don't want to be fighting any more'#a couple lilies is like '*wince*'#roses are 'i fucked up and so did you'#narcissus are just :) :)#peonies are vaguely affectionate#when she's genuinely really really sorry there's a mishmash of lilies and lavender and yellow roses and lilacs and everything#when she's really mad she doesn't usually go for Flower Messages but once she just left a vase of thistles#when she's ready to say 'i love you' she... doesn't. but she manages this wild colourful bouquet + a for real potted plant#they don't have rings they have an ENGAGEMENT PLANT#(people generally assume jyn is the one who likes flowers because she's the one going 'okay how do i find x' but lol no#it's cassian who does and a happy coincidence that it becomes jyn's preferred communication method :P)#anghraine babbles#deep blogging#otp: welcome home#star wars#jyn erso#cassian andor#flowers#!!!!

Soooo. That ep. Curious as to your thoughts on it!
Okay, so I enjoyed many portions of it, but I still ultimately walked away kinda unsatisfied with some weak storytelling choices.
HIGHLIGHTS, in no particular order:
Cat’s entrance. It was a context I think nobody was anticipating, it was full of humor, and it finally brought back some much-needed Older Female Perspective from someone who isn’t a crazypants sociopath.
Alex’s idea of a trust fall is out of this world, man. PUN INTENDED.
Also, this is the first time we’ve seen the girls fly together as adults in literally ever??? Why is this not a thing we get to see more often? I MISS MY SWEET CHILDREN GETTING INTO SIBLING MISCHIEF.
Maggie is yet again chill under pressure, A++.
Little Brother Winn not wanting to leave Alex when the DEO got attacked and then being v concerned about Maggie was all kinds of cute.
JAMES AND MAGGIE WORKING TOGETHER ABOUT FUCKING TIME
Maggie joking to Alex that they both had the brilliant idea to run to a bar when the end of the world was nigh, get out of my house with that sass.
EVERY WOMAN IN THIS EPISODE DROVE THE PLOT FORWARD IN SOME WAY AT SOME POINT WHILE THE DUDES WERE SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
No, seriously, I was legit beaming over the number of iconic female actors of decades past who had major roles to play in this episode.
ALEX AND KARA SAD EMOTIONAL HUG.
Lena being so done with everything happening on that spaceship, particularly her casual stroll past Mon-El’s awkward wrestle with the guard. And then she hacks the lock like it’s nothing, and is 100% Team Kara at all times.
Winn and Cat is the most weirdly adorable dynamic ever and can they please for the love of god get a female mentor character back on this show as a regular because it’s dying a slow death without one.
JAMES KEEPS WEIGHTS IN THE OFFICE LOLWTF.
James got to do actual real hero shit! And BLESS CAT for recognizing him immediately.
I still want more backstory on their overlapping time at the Daily Planet so so much.
Superfriends fully expecting Lillian to be the douchecanoe that she is and outsmarting her
The plot twist with Clark was nicely introduced!
Issues:
1) We can now see that Mon-El’s entire storyline regarding Daxam and his parents has been handled with zero care or attention to detail. Literally nothing about Rhea’s motivations or plan makes sense?? And so much of what Mon-El established about his family when his character was introduced has now been contradicted in ways that have never been reconciled:
The first thing Mon-El tried to do upon waking up was “ET phone home” his family, and he never got a response. Yet now there are suddenly thousands of Daxamite survivors? And they weren’t all on that spaceship with Rhea and King Hercules, either -- that’s why she needed the portal. So where the eff have they been living all these years? The conversation in 2x20 with Lena suggests they were in fact on Daxam -- so why didn’t anyone ever answer Mon-El and say they received his signal???
If all you need is *strands of hair* to create offspring, and Mon-El’s been missing for literally decades, why the fuck didn’t Rhea and Hercules just have another baby like fifteen years ago and go on their merry way repopulating Daxam if it was so damn important to them? That is a gaping and utterly stupid plot hole. (Also I maybe got sidetracked thinking about Hermione Granger and her botched Polyjuice Potion. Hope you like mutant cat hybrids, Rhea!)
Mon-El has said repeatedly that he would run away if he ever saw his father again and that he was a terrible dude, but like ... that is literally the opposite of how everything played out when he showed up?
If the royal family of Daxam maintained control by drugging everyone and leaving them to a life of pointless debauchery, where the hell did they get a competent army from? Because if Rhea and Hercules were as awful as it seemed, how many survivors would even *want* to join them in their quest to revive the Third Reich planet?
Also, what the fuck is Rhea even after? First she wanted her son to come home, then she wanted to kill Supergirl, now she wants to enslave Earth and Make Daxam Great Again ... like. One of these things is not like the others. This character arc is terrible.
2) Please do not ever again give J’onn the start of a fantastic Molly Weasley parent moment just to nerf him immediately afterwards. It absolutely ruined the expression of his desire to protect Kara and Alex, and there has been very little development of that dynamic this season to begin with. (I get that they did it to free him up to play Cyborg Hank and to give M’gann something to do in 2x22, but still.)
3) As I anticipated, the romantic urgency of Kara’s big need to get on the ship fell completely flat because it’s been at least 10 episodes and we still don’t know why she even likes Mon-El. I made a face when they were reunited, and it wasn’t a happy one like when Alex and Maggie were.
4) While I loved the presence of all the older ladies, this episode was ... very white.

Tried to buy something on Gumroad and the payment options are “Card” or “Paypal” and I have money on my Paypal so I chose Paypal. And next it says “put your card details here” lolwtf? Like I specifically chose the no-card option?? I am not putting my card details there or indeed anywhere near Paypal. I have specifically refrained from linking a card to my Paypal to make sure that I never accidentally use my real money (card) instead of fun-money (Paypal balance that I have topped up in the past). Googling around, everything keeps saying “you need to link your card or your bank account to your Paypal account” and I’m like “no I don’t??? I have paid for things with just Paypal balance for ages??” Is this a new thing? Is Paypal making itself irrelevant to my life on purpose? Is the new rule that you can’t actually pay for goods and services with Paypal balance? What’s Paypal balance for then anymore, just transferring money to individuals? :/
If you have answers, please at me or use the reply function, I miss reblogs really easily and I really want to know if Paypal is officially useless now :/ Or is it just Gumroad being a useless piece of junk?
And also, if it is true that Paypal has bricked itself for my life, what’s the hip and happening no-card payment method that actually works? Are there any alternatives?
