Part 1 of my He Brothers HCs
- In the future, He Tian grows to share more of He Cheng’s physical attributes (height, musculature, facial structure, etc.)
- They uncannily resemble their father but they inherited their mother’s eyes
- From the back, they look almost like the same person except for little details: despite both slicking their hair back, He Tian’s hair is longer and darker, he doesn’t have an undercut, and his posture is more lax
- From the front, the difference is more noticeable; He Cheng has more lines on his face from all the years dealing with his family’s bs
- Not to mention, their personalities are VERY different
- But there are times when they’re on mafia mode (particularly when they’re trying to achieve the same goal - which is a very very rare occurence), they seem to tune into the same wavelength and whoever is facing off with them, whether it be in combat, negotiations or whatever, are absolutely demolished by the end of the ordeal. Of course, they still clash more often than they get along, afterall He Tian is forced to work for his family for sometime until he can do whatever he wants (start his own non-mafia related business to be free with his Momo)
- People in the family business (especially the new guys) sometimes mistook He Tian for He Cheng and vice versa, much to their horror and He Tian’s amusement
- It doesn’t help that He Tian could mimic He Cheng’s voice and mannerisms; when he was younger he wanted to be like his brother cuz he thought he was cool but obviously that didn’t last long so whatever behavior he learned from his brother he used to mock the latter
- But He Tian and He Cheng don’t think they look THAT much alike
- There was one time when He Tian was wrongfully targetted by a rival group because they thought he was He Cheng
- There were also times when Jian Yi, Zheng Xi, and Mo mistook He Cheng for He Tian (He Cheng’s back was to them and they weren’t paying attention)
- One morning, after a long night at work, Mo saw a He Tian shaped figure in the kitchen. Thinking that his boyfriend was back from his business trip, he hugged them from behind and nuzzled his face onto their back, his sleep-addled brain missing the way said figure froze when he made contact with them. Then he heard He Tian’s scandalized voice from behind. Mo opens his bleary eyes, makes eye contact with the person he was cuddling, and his stomach drops to the depths of hell when he realized that this was not his boyfriend, but his boyfriend’s scary mafia older brother, He Cheng. He literally flies off the other, face redder than his hair from embarrassment and absolutely terrified for his life. Cue the: “I COULD EXPLAIN!” “I SWEAR, I THOUGHT HE WAS YOU, CHICKEN DICK!” Meanwhile, He Tian went from feeling confused to jealous/betrayed to extremely amused within a matter of seconds. He Cheng was weirded out but also found the mistake slightly amusing, enough so to crack a millimeter of what could be a smile
- The only person who had never & will never mistake them for each other is Brother Qiu; he knows the difference between his boyfriend - yes He Cheng and Qiu are together - and his boyfriend’s demon baby brother from miles away
- Now imagine a crack AU where the He brothers switch bodies oh man that’d be hilarious

"I'm fucked," Zheng Xi said, dragging a hand down his face. "I'm so — there's no way I'm gonna finish this in time. Fuck."
Guan Shan and Jian Yi looked up. Zheng Xi and Jian Yi were cross-legged on the floor, their laptops propped on the coffee table. For the past several hours they’d been working on homework while Guan Shan lay on the futon and passed the time on his phone. He was only there for moral support. Since high school, Zheng Xi always said he focused better if people were around to hold him accountable. And today, he’d said it was an emergency.
Jian Yi glanced at Zheng Xi's screen. "I thought you said you were halfway done?"
Zheng Xi scowled. "I thought I was, but I just re-read the instructions and there's a whole section that I completely missed. Now the entire paper is screwed up because I thought I was summarizing when I was actually supposed to argue whether the concept is — you know what? Forget it. There's no point in explaining. Long story short, I'm not finishing this by midnight and I'm fucked."
The foul language wasn’t like him. He rubbed at an eye, then his temple, then pulled a hand through his hair — and Jian Yi and Guan Shan stood to attention.

Random 19days head cannons bc it’s felt so long since an update and I’m bored and figure other ppl might want something to consume:
I feel like Momo resembles his father the most, but gets his fairness, eyes, hair color (obviously) from mama Mo.
And the opposite for the He brothers, I like to think they only got their Height & jaw structure from their father, but their silky hair, nose eyes lashes and lips from their mother who was probably gorgeous.
Xixi’s sister notices the change in him when Jian Yi disappears and puts two and two together
Jian Yi’s mom always knew about her son and Zheng Xi bc from an outsiders perspective it’s so totally obvious (lol)
Jian Yi & Xixi are a switch couple in a 50/50 way, Tian & mo are more like 20/80.
Momo only wants to experience penetrating Tian because of how good He Tian makes it sound when penetrating mo LOL
Mo never came out to buzzcut because there was no need to, but once in highschool Mo mentioned he tian and buzcut was just casually like “that dude you dated a couple years ago”?
He Tian modeled for one summer in another country to prove to his brother he could become rich without his help and it was working until He Tian realized he didn’t want to be in the spotlight
He Tian entrusted two of his lackeys he trusted the most to take pictures of Mo Gaun Shan and bring them to him while they were separated
Mo is one of those slender dudes with tiny waists and slender ribcages but is this really a head-cannon? We’ve seen Mo’s waist.
Jian Yi runs a popular Instagram account where he posts aesthetic photos of him and Xixi being couple and romantic (holding hands, cuddling, etc) all while censoring their faces ofc
He tian gives Jian Yi a hard time about the IG page only because Mo doesn’t allow him to make one of their own
They go on double dates and have couples game nights all the time where they all drink and play a game, and ofc He Tian & Jian Yi are the ones that get super competitive and loud. Mo only gets loud to tell tian to stfu, Xixi just sits in silence waiting for his turn.
He Tian never likes taking Mo to certain areas of the city where gay men are known to be because surprise surprise; Momo is a catch to other gay men and He Tian can see it and hates being jealous.
Same with Xixi except everywhere because Jian Yi is just so pretty.

Jian Yi:  From black-listed baby to favored Jian grandson
Tumblr media
A few months ago when the backstory of Jian Yi’s parents was unfolding, I ran across a small article that said in Sichuan, unwed mothers would now be allowed birth certificates for their child.  Which means that before 2023, these kids and those across China didn’t have birth certificates.
Jian Yi’s mom was an unwed mom, so how would that affect him, I wondered?  That is, if he’s living in the China in the real world, and not the one that seems to have an abundance of very fair-haired natives living there.
Tumblr media
So I poked around the internet, like you do, and learned a lot.  I thought I’d share.  Chinese readers already know these facts and consequences, which means they’ve figured out a lot about Jian Yi’s family.
Here’s the bullet list of important facts that were in effect when Jian Yi was born:
Three important documents are normally issued when a child is born in China:
               A birth permit
               A medical certificate of birth
               A hukou, or household registration
A soon-to-be-mom has to apply for a birth permit before the birth of a child in China.  This permit means that the state authorizes a birth.
A marriage certificate is required to obtain a birth permit.
A new mom without a marriage certificate and a birth permit is illegally violating China’s family planning policies and is frequently fined.  She must also pay all birth medical expenses herself.
After a child is born, a medical certificate of birth is issued; it shows the baby’s age, relationships and nationality.  The father must give permission to be listed on the child’s birth certificate.
With the required birth permit and the medical certificate of birth, the parents register their baby for a hukou (adding the child to their household registration) in the local police station.
Tumblr media
if the child is born out of wedlock, the parents can still get a hukou for the baby as long as they present the results of a paternity test to prove that the child belongs to both parents.
If a single woman chooses to give birth alone, or if the father goes missing and can't complete the paternity test, then the baby can’t obtain a hukou.
Heihaizi or "black child" is a term for children who aren’t registered in the hukou.  Being excluded from the family register, they do not legally exist.  They can’t use most public services, such as education and health care, can’t inherit or buy property, don’t get insurance coverage for medical or social purposes, can’t collect financial aid or attend school unless financial penalties are paid.  These “black-listed children” are also denied many rights as adults. They can’t apply for government or other jobs, get married and start a family, or join the armed forces.
Local governments make the rules about granting hukous to children born to unmarried parents.
Tumblr media
Jian Yi’s mom choosing to go it alone is a much bigger deal than I thought!  A woman in her position is expected to have an abortion, as her father insisted.  When she refuses, I think she expected to reunite with her lover and marry before the birth, solving the problem.
And then he dies.
Tumblr media
(I’m pretty sure he’s dead, or else severely handicapped and unaware of anything.  A father would not knowingly subject a mother and child to such extreme punishment for being born out of wedlock)
But…
Jian Yi is in school.  He’s using hospital facilities.  So how did his mom overcome the stigma and get that all-important hukou after her own family disowned her?
Tumblr media
I think the Jian family stepped up and had “a little talk” with the local authorities, who could grant the hukou given enough rea$on.
It explains why Jian Yi’s mom is so familiar with the Jian side of the family, when she hadn’t even met anyone outside of her lover before he died.  She must have gone to them for help.  I wonder if we’ll see more of her back story and watch this play out?
Just one more thing...this:
Tumblr media
...is a horrible thing to do to a child in any culture.

19 days | ch.410
I haven’t done one of these since April, so- yeah, it was about time.
I’LL GET THERE! DON’T WORRY—first, the revelations.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought Mr Jian was Jian Yi’s father. This actually makes more sense because why would He Cheng work for two mafia bosses around the same age (more or less?) This also means that Mama Jian is not a mob wife but a MOB QUEEN HERSELF. The milfs have won!
Tumblr media
Back to Mr Ji, he’s sick so is his motivation to prepare Jian Yi to be his successor? Then what about the He brothers? Is Papa He the second in command? Are He Tian and Jian Yi really cousins? That would explain a family business and why all of them work together. Because it’s clear that He Cheng works for his dad too, or at least answers to him... yet, it doesn’t seem he would be chosen to be his father's successor so... WHY ARE THEY NOT RESPECTING MY MAN CHENG? HUH? He’s capable, he’s good at his job, he has a heart, he can take drastic decisions and keep a dog alive, he can control his urges and he probably hasn’t made a move on Qiu because he’s a professional but oh god, he wants to. And Qiu is a slut, he would. My headcanon: Qiu is also a bi king.
Yeah, that went places that shouldn’t have, sorry. Back to the chapter.
Tumblr media
Zhanyi, as always, is the cutest. And good for you, Xixi, Mama Ji approves.
Tumblr media
First of all: WHERE THE BLOODY HELL IS QIU? No Qiu and no She Li in sight, which means Qiu is probably taking care of the body. He was there to prevent He Tian from becoming an assassin, basically, but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to do something to She Li. Is he throwing him somewhere? Will he take him to a hospital? That’s a mystery and I want answers, Ox.
Tumblr media
LOOK AT HIS FACE. He looks so tired and so relieved. I think a part of him was scared of showing Mo what he can do because one thing is knowing he belongs to a dangerous family, and another one is showing you’ve been trained as well. Yet Mo is taking him home, to take care of him, to a safe place, just like He Tian did for him.
Tumblr media
MAMA MO. I missed you. You work too hard and she knows Mo is a good boi.
Tumblr media
How to finally get your man, a guide by He Tian: compliment his mum’s food.
Tumblr media
Precious.
What I love about this moment it’s not just HOW LONG we’ve been waiting. Or the character development both of them have had after... well, the hell they’ve been through, but how He Tian waits. He simply waits and looks at Mo, he could move with him but he doesn’t, he waits for Mo to close his eyes, for Mo to close the space between them.
Also, this confirms that Mo likes to grab He Tian’s hair and He Tian likes that too. But let’s not go to the kinks yet.
It’s a shame that because of censorship we can have an explicit kiss, but we know this is a proper kiss in (almost) any other place. WE’VE BEEN BLESSED.
Now let’s just wait for a mutual Zhanyi kiss, but I have less hope for them tbh.

Wait wait wait you dislike Q?? Can I ask why if it doesn't makes you uncomfortable? It really is news to me and I've been a follower for a long time!
Hope you’re the same anon, thank you for coming back and if not, welcome
He does makes me uncomfortable tho his mere existence is an insult to mine… no not really but yes I don’t quite like him, I thought I was being clear with all those post about him not being the best worker, his lightweight alcohol tolerance, the insults, but to make it clear this time allow to explain why I don’t like him, warning this may not be valid points, a lot of them are ridiculous but this is the honest way I feel
His personality is dull as fuck, he barely has any, other than his body he has nothing to offer, I can fix my own bike, bodyguard?? He can’t even make sure Jian Yi stays put, he’s good at hitting people and shooting tho, a savage if you ask me, so far he’s just boring, and more importantly recently he did this
Tumblr media
Seriously who does that??? A sick fuck that’s who, he knew about the dog, he knew why HC gave him that dog, he probably also knew what He senior asked He Cheng to do, and he thinks he’s being funny?? Fuck this bastard, fuck his family and to hell with everything he loves, and I’m not comparing Mo with the dog but that fur baby was probably the only friend HT had as a child, and this disgrace of a human took that information and he tried to make a joke in a psycho kind of way, and people like him and they despise She Li?! Seriously? She Li is way more interesting as a character, at the very least he’s not boring.
Never mind the fact that he can see this and I can’t
Tumblr media
No I don’t like Q a single bit but i could talk about this for hours
Thank you so much for asking anon, glad that I made things clear for you
Note: A big shout out to all those Se Li lovers, you guys are my favorite weirdo fandom, he’s the superior white haired bastard in this house
Tumblr media
As a person he sucks but as a character he is way more interesting than Q, keep it up Sheliners you guys like chaos and that’s my favorite math theory

Lost You Forever (S1 & S2)
Year : 2023 | Country : CN | Nb of episodes: 60
My rate: 10/10
Synopsis :
In ancient times, humans mixed with deities and demons, the world consisted of Chenrong, Xiyan, and Haoling. Wandering in Dahuang, Jiu Yao from Haoling lost her identity and appearance. She settled in Qingshui Town and was renamed Wen Xiao Liu.
The Prince Cang Xuan of Xiyan was Xiao Liu’s cousin. To find Xiao Liu, he travelled around Dahuang and came to Qingshui Town. In Qingshui Town, Xiao Liu saves Tushan Jing from danger and falls in love with him. Xiang Liu and Xiao Liu appreciated each other and became confidants. After a few twists and turns, Cang Xuan and Xiao Liu eventually recognized each other.
After recovering her identity, Xiao Liu helped Cang Xuan bring the whole world under his rule and retired from the rivers and lakes. The thoughtless man puts all his energy into governing the country because he knows that as long as the world is at peace, his little boy will be able to be happy and healthy.
Main cast :
Yang Zi as Xiao Yao (Haoling Jiu Yao) / Wen Xiaoliu
Zhang Wan Yi as Cang Xuan, Prince of Xi Yan Kingdom
Deng Wei as Tushan Jing / Ye Shiqi
Tan Jian Ci as Xiang Liu / Fangfeng Bei
Wang Hong Yi as Chishui Feng Long
Dai Lu Wa as A Nian (Haoling Yi)
My thoughts on this drama :
Now that I'm done with season 1 (and getting worried about what's in store for season 2), I can say that watching this show was just me being wrecked and getting my heart broken in thousands of pieces. I really appreciate the Reverse Harem story they served us here. Plus, the actors they chose are brilliant in their respective roles. It also rekindled the flame I hold for etheral white haired beings. Of course, with 4 male leads to choose from, there is obviously one that would get my vote (I said something about white haired beings didn't I). Although I already know who she's going to end up with (both because I could not bear the supsense and checked the novel ending, and because Yang Zi kind of said it herself during a TV show)... I can't help but try to safeguard the little flame that is my favorite 'ship'. Although I know it leads to nowhere, the impossibility of it makes it all the more powerful. TJC is truly incredible in his role, and I am gobsmacked by the intensity he manages to bring to his scenes every.single.time he appears on screen. His character is compelling, hauntingly beautiful and lethal. As for the others, well, you have ever-yearning bro-zoned one, good-but-dull pretty boy, and the buddy-zoned guy who looks more attracted to bro-zoned one that to our female lead. The other female characters are rather dull, and uninteresting, with minor (but annoying) roles. The story really focuses on Jiu Yao and her four knights **cough**
You'll get genderbending (several times!), harem drama, political intrigues, anguish and laughter, sweetness and bitterness, all in this amazingly packaged drama (music, costumes, incedible sceneries, it has it all!)
Anyway! I very much recommend this drama, which earns a big fat 10 for season 1. Rating may (or may not) change after season 2 airs next summer (due to CN sh*tty new regulations stating that dramas split into seasons must be aired with a one year gap between two seasons ugh)...
A Favorite ?
YES

19 Days x Male OC
Tumblr media
They had finally extinguished the fire, but only to leave a new mess of burned walls, a wrecked motorcycle, a puddle of water, and foam all over the floor from the extinguisher. They were now kneeling on the floor with an expression of guilt and fear in front of the silver-haired male, who held a folded belt with a glare. He then walks towards Jian Yi and tightly holds his face while slapping the folding belt on the boy’s cheek. “Are you the one who burned my house?” Qiu scowls, glaring at the young blonde as he grits his teeth.
“It wasn’t me! It was the redhead!” Jian Yi confesses, pointing at the male beside him, and Mo sweats nervously. Xin looked at the light blonde-haired teen beside him with an incredulous expression, narrowing his eyes at the male from the accusation when they made eye contact, arguing telepathically. ‘Are you crazy!? It wasn’t Mo; if only you and Zheng Xi didn’t pop up with a lit candle, then Mo wouldn’t slap the candle on the can of gasoline!!’
‘It’s still his fault..’ “Brat, how do you plan on paying me back?” Qiu queried, glaring menacingly at the redhead as he smoked, the shadows making it more intimidating than his looks. Suddenly, Mo slowly stood up and grabbed a bottle of alcohol and gulped its contents in one go, emptying the bottle immediately, shocking the four boys. “Wait, Mo-!” - Xin
“I DON’T HAVE MONEY! JUST BEAT ME UP!” Mo exclaimed, his face flushed with alcohol, and He Tian was quick to stop him as he grabbed the bottle, while Zheng Xi struggled to stop Jian Yi from drinking the unused alcohol. Xin only sighed in exasperation as he looked at the adult beside him, who’s irked by the chaos that was displayed in front of them, evident from the veins that popped out from his forehead.  “We’re so sorry…” Xin whispered, crying internally to himself. This was the biggest trouble he and others caused, other than accidentally breaking a plate at home.  “You better be…” Qiu growled, clenching his teeth before taking a long drag of his cigar.  The chaotic four had finally ceased their antics, and the two sober boys began to drag Jian Yi and Mo—who’s holding an extinguisher—upstairs, leaving the other teen and the enraged male who bellowed, which was instantly futile as the four were already inside the room. “Come downstairs and clean this up right this instant!”
Xin sighed tiredly at his friends and began to grab a mop and clean, quietly listening to the pitter-patter of the rain and constant thunder outside. He perked up when he heard the older male sighing, looking up only to be stared back at, at which point he almost jumped back from shock. “Aren’t you going to follow them?” Qiu inquired, looking at the teen with a raised brow, grabbing one of the cleaning supplies, and beginning to clean. “No, I want to clean so I can compensate for the troubles we have caused and stressed you out. We’re sorry again, Brother Qiu.” Xin atoned, frowning as he sighed, and kept cleaning until his phone vibrated. He took out his phone from his pocket, checking the receiver only for his face to contort into fear from the labeled ‘MOM’ in front of the screen. He immediately pressed the accept button on the incoming call, accepting his fate, and immediately got an outrageous yell and rant that loudly echoed through the house. “HUANG XIN, DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS? WHERE ARE YOU, AND WHY HAVEN'T YOU GOT HOME YET?!? IT’S ALREADY 11 PM! DO YOU KEEP PLANNING TO HANG OUT WITH YOUR FRIENDS ALL NIGHT?? COME BACK HOME RIGHT THIS INSTANT!” “Ma, I can’t come home right now. It’s been raining, and there’s a flood right now. I’m not at my friend's house right now, so I can’t come home. I promise I’ll come home tomorrow, safely.” Xin assured his mom, feeling Qiu’s stare from his back and hearing him snicker, which he heard clearly between his mom’s loud rants, which made him grit his teeth.  “WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU AREN’T IN YOUR FRIEND’S HOUSE!? WHERE ARE YOU RIGHT NOW? I SWEAR IF YOU GET INTO A FIGHT, I’LL MAKE YOUR LIFE A LIVING HELL WHEN YOU RETURN TOMORROW!” ‘’Ma, I’m in He Tian's brother’s house, and no, I didn’t get into a fight, I promise. I’ll hang up now, okay? I promise I’ll come back safe and explain everything tomorrow.” Xin promised, already sweating nervously from the threat, gripping the mop tightly.  “FINE, PROMISE THAT AND DON’T EVER CAUSE TROUBLES WITH HE TIAN’S BROTHER, UNDERSTAND? COME BACK SAFE AND SOUND TOMORROW, UNDERSTAND?”
‘Too late for that...’ Xin thought, instantly remembering the chaos they created earlier, before hanging up his phone once he spoke his reply and farewell to his angry mother.  ‘Angry mom’s are more scary than any other creature on earth…’
Xin sighed after their conversation but resumed cleaning the mess quickly, ignoring the adult idly. After 30 minutes, Xin and Qiu completely cleaned the place. Xin smiled at success before wiping his face with his sooty shirt, instantly smearing the ashes and soot that were spread on his face, which made him purse his lips in annoyance, but he decided to leave it be. He looked at the exhausted adult beside him before looking away awkwardly after he couldn't come up with a topic to discuss and just sitting idly in the silent and awkward atmosphere until it got cut off by a yell from upstairs. “QUICK, QUICK, QUICK! AHHHHH!”
“FUCKING HELL! AHHH!” “The fuck are they up to now?!” Qiu growled, storming up the stairs with Xin following behind him, only to be greeted with another disaster. An opened window with foam and rain pelting down on the four boys who are half asleep with Zheng Xi trying to close the window as he kept pressing down buttons on the remote.  “WHO SENT YOU TO TORTURE ME?!?” “FOR PETE’S SAKE, GUYS! ZHENG XI, WHYYYYY?!!!” To say it another way, it was a long night for them. _______________________________ YOHOO, I UPDATED EARLY WHICH IS SURPRISING SKSKS. I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOYED THE FIC! LIKES AND REBLOGS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED, ESPECIALLY CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM! THAT'S ALL, BAIII <33

question: do you think old xian has decided to move she li's interest in jian yi to guan shan?
i only think its a possibility bc in the latest chapter he says he's looking for mo, and calls the injury on his neck 'a love bite'. and every time we see she li in chapters its got to do with guan shan. also he hasn't mentioned jian yi with any interest in a long time, and all we've really got on that front is 'he has nice hair'
plus old xian has done it before, where they had started he tian out as secondary love interest to Jian yi then was like nevermind you're into the redhead delinquent now

Waiting for the Rain: Chapter One
TW: VIOLENCE AND TORTURE
He shut his eyes tight against the tears that welled up in them.
If there was ever a day where he wished for rain, today was the day.
He Tian stood motionlessly over the freshly dug grave, watching as Mo Guanshan’s casket was gently lowered into the ground. Beside him stood Mrs. Mo, crying incoherently into someone’s jacket, holding held her tight against their shoulder. Behind him were everyone else who’d known the boy in his short but unforgettable life.
The sky’s sunset canvas of dark blues and soft reds did nothing to soothe anyone’s heart ache. He wished for rain. Beating, cold, rain. He wanted it to bathe all of them in the melancholy that was loss. But the sky was stubborn and stayed serene. No greying clouds, no roaring thunder. Just a peacefulness that He Tian felt was undeserved.
He forced himself to watch as the dirt was slowly shoveled back into place, leaving the red-haired boy to rest in his eternity. One by one, the people left and returned to their lives, Mrs. Mo being gently pulled away by her family and friends. All that remained were three boys.
Once four.
Jian Yi placed a hand on He Tian’s shoulder. The brunette turned toward him with hooded eyes. He Tian didn’t cry. Not yet anyway.
He looked down at Jian Yi and understood that it was time to go. Slowly, he followed Jian Yi and Zhan Zheng Xi to his brother’s car, sparing one last glance at the silent gravestone that sat above Mo Guanshan’s grave. Slowly, ever so slowly, like a trickling stream into a lake, the boy felt something else bloom in his heart. The grief he felt at losing Mo Guanshan was steadily being replaced by something much, much darker.
A month passed. Two. Three. Six. Eight.
Days flowed by without a single “chicken dick” being heard. He Tian never learned to grow used to it.
In the following time that the red-haired spitfire was gone, no one who had known him moved on. Each person he’d left a mark on remained stubbornly tethered to a memory of him. One particular person being He Tian, who grew ever more solitary as he planned She Li’s death. He was impulsive, yes, but he knew with every ounce in his being that Mo Guanshan had died in pain and swore that he would inflict the same punishment on She Li.
Though the police had ruled his death a murder, no one knew who was responsible. She Li had been suspected during the early days of investigation but was written off for lack of evidence. And so, the case drew to a close and was left cold. Cold, like the body of a young boy six feet underground who, as far as anyone was concerned, did not deserve to die.
Jian Yi and Zheng Xi noticed their friend’s descent but couldn’t bring it in themselves to stop him. In the beginning, they had tried to reconnect and rekindle the friendship that existed before Mo Guanshan came into the picture, but it was never the same. They watched in silence and defeat as He Tian slipped into the shadows. His bright smile that shined like a second sun withered away into a tight lipped and brooding frown wherever he went. His flirtatious attitude too seemed to die in him as it was replaced by an inhuman and bloodthirsty aura.
A year passed and somewhere behind a dark alley stood an ashen-haired boy, stunned as he felt the knife slowly embed itself deep into his stomach. He looked down and watched as the gleaming tip of a blade poked through his torso. This was no ordinary knife… knives were never as long as human torsos. He tried to make a sound but found it impossible as a hand clamped down onto his mouth, pulling him backwards and by proxy, deeper onto the knife until he could feel the hilt on his back.
His band of thugs watched in abject horror as He Tian stared them down while twisting the blade left and right inside She Li’s stomach. They didn’t even see it coming. All they could register in that moment was the fact that He Tian had just stabbed their violent circus’s ringleader.
One boy screamed. The others scrambled to make a run for it. They did not get far.
It was dark. And cold. That was all She Li could tell as he felt his aching body being dragged somewhere. His head scraped against the dirt, collecting mud and grime as he was pulled feet first into an abandoned warehouse. He mumbled, trying to scream or shout past the cloth tied to his mouth. For the first time in forever, he felt helpless. Completely and utterly helpless, at the mercy of He Tian.
Aside from his mouth, a thin piece of fabric had been tightly wound against his eyes, leaving him to see only faint outlines of his surroundings. The sound of chains and crates being moved around echoed above him. Then suddenly, whirring. Something, as if some large sort of machinery, had been turned on.
There was pain in his abdomen but it was dulled without bleeding or losing any sort of bodily fluid. As if it had been treated.
The blindfold was ripped from him, causing him to wince at the sudden lights. He heard muffling and looked to see that two other boys had also been sat on a few crates, tied up and unable to make a sound. He squirmed and tried to rip his hands free of their bonds but found that they had been duct taped together, as well as his feet. As he struggled to break free, he felt the sharp tip of a knife meet his chin.
He looked up to find the dark-haired boy staring down at him. He wasn’t smiling like he thought he would. No, he looked… almost at peace.
But He Tian was everything but at peace.
No words were passed between the two. Not from He Tian, and not from She Li. All that was there were two boys, staring down at one another, in grief and in fear. She Li wrenched his head away from the knife point, feeling it scour against his skin. Warm blood dripped down from his chin, trickling down to his lap.
He watched as He Tian walked away from him towards what looked to be a conveyor belt. Though, it did not seem like an ordinary conveyor belt. Besides the hooks that were welded on to either side of it, there was a large and long chain that laid between the hooks.
That’s when it dawned on him.
No, he thought. Not like this.
The fear inside him increased ten-fold. All of the bound boys cried out in protest but such cries fell on deaf ears and muffling cloths. Some began to sob. A few peed themselves. She Li pleaded silently that this was not what he thought it was.
Unfortunately for him, it was.
He watched as the boy to his left was dragged and wrestled to lie on the conveyor belt, his hands being cut free from the duct tape but then tied to a series of chains. That’s when She Li noticed that this was no ordinary belt but one lined with thousands of push pins. The two others could only watch as the boy howled in pure agony through his muffler.
Sweat rolled down She Li’s back as he was forced to watch He Tian wrap chains across the boy’s neck, wrists, and torso. With each action He Tian took to tie his lackey down, She Li found that the chains were also hooked to a series of pulleys hanging just above them. And it clicked. The boy would be ripped apart.
He Tian walked toward him, ripping the muffler from his mouth. “Choose. Either you go in their place and they live. Or. They can die for you and all you’ll have to do is watch. Then you’re free to go.” For the first time in his life, She Li felt as though his role in the world had been switched, turned upside down. He was the prey now. He’d hunted the deer and killed it but it seemed there was an even bigger predator lurking in his life. He looked up at He Tian and in his eyes, he knew this was no joke. Someone had to die.
A life for a life.
“They… they did it.” He said, as calmly as he could, unaware that his eyes were dead give aways in and of themselves. “I wasn’t the one who—who wrapped the chain on Guanshan. It was them.” He Tian regarded him for a moment, nodding before taking out a small remote. He pressed it and behind him, the conveyor belt and chains began to move.
The boy who was lain on his bed of pushpins screamed. Their sharp edges dragged against his skin and tore through his clothes, creating thousands of thin lines against his back and arms. Blood quickly flowed onto the conveyor belt, spilling thick and warm across its surface and down to the floor. The boy’s screams were short-lived as the chains around his neck pulled taut against his skin. He began to choke, saliva soaking the cloth in his mouth.
She Li couldn’t look away.
He felt He Tian’s large hand pulling his hair, forcing him to watch the gruesome scene before him.
It only took ten more minutes before they all heard the crisp snap of a neck and the crackling of ribs as the chains around the boy’s torso pulled even tighter. Beside She Li, his other lackey began to sob, praying for the ashen-haired boy to go first or for some sort of law enforcement to save them. But rescue would not come. Not in time anyway.
He Tian pressed a different button on his remote and immediately, the chains slackened against the dead body. If one could even call it that. Their ribs were crushed too far in, leaving their stomach flatter than it should be. Blood dripped everywhere from the wounds on the dead boy’s back, their skin marred with chain marks, imprinted deep into their flesh enough that it bled. Their neck hung limply as He Tian pulled the boy’s body from his arms, flinging him almost comically to some forgotten corner of the warehouse.
He turned to the other boy and then at She Li. He can still live if you take his place.
No, She Li thought. Better him than me.
And so, the last lackey died, perishing on the conveyor belt the same way that his friend did.
She Li felt a sense of relief wash over himself as He Tian walked towards him, assuming that he would be freed as per He Tian’s word. That was, until he felt the other’s fist on his cheek.
He fell to the cold, concrete floor, coughing blood into the ground. Looking up, through his blurred vision, he could barely make out He Tian’s face. The overhead lights against him was too bright and shaded the boy’s murderous expression.
There was a hand on his neck, pressing down ever so slowly and mounting the pressure at an alarmingly snail-pace. He could feel his breathing coming dangerously close to a stop before the pressure was gone.
He Tian pulled him by the scruff of his shirt, dragging his limp body and slamming it hard into the conveyor belt with already blunted pins. He screamed, lungs on fire as it hadn’t even had time to recover from being choked earlier. He felt his hands being cut free from their duct tape and wrapped in chains. He felt weak, unable to run from his impending doom.
“Wait! Y—you said—” he had no time to utter anything else as he felt the chains around his neck tighten. The belt beneath him roiled and shifted into gear, causing him to scream again. He Tian watched beside him, flicking the switch on and off, left and right, controlling the belt and snake-like chains so that they dragged and pulled through She Li in every direction. The ash-haired boy cried out for mercy yet He Tian kept at it, uncaring. Unwavering.
Not a single part of him wanted to end She Li’s pain or let him go. There was no “deep down inside” for He Tian. There was only an empty hole left in his heart that would, in no way, ever be filled. It had died, alongside Guanshan, buried deep into the earth with the boy who would never again grace He Tian with his presence or warmth. His eyes met She Li’s watery ones and in that miniscule moment, the rage in him seemed to ebb.
Before returning full force.
She Li was dead. Guanshan was dead. And in some way, He Tian too was dead.
He walked outside, cigarette lighter in his hand as the thin stick of tobacco and nicotine and heartbreak sat between his lips. He watched the gentle rippling of the river as moonlight shined on it. Despite the night’s peace, He Tian still felt something was wrong.
He wanted rain.
