The dichotomy of Raven Branwen and Taiyang Xiao Long is that the latter is a generally good person but a TERRIBLE father, while the former is many bad things but a 'bad mother' is NOT one of them. Or at the very least, she's not any worse than her teammates.

Why?

Well for one, because when Raven left her daughter(s), she made sure they were left in the care of people she trusted to raise and take care of them because she believed she was unfit to raise them ("You're better at that life. Better than I was").

While when Tai effectively checked out of his daughters' lives to the point where BOTH have stated up-front and matter-of-factly that Yang raised Ruby, it's pretty clear that he DID NOT.

(Also please note that I am not saying that Raven is a 'good' mother. NONE of Team STRQ were 'good' parents. They ALL failed Ruby and Yang in one way or another. It's just that some people seem insistent on giving Tai a free pass just because he doesn't fit the typical/generic 'shitty dad' traits and also isn't a woman.)

summer: everyone get on my spinach & cheese omelette agenda 🤩 anyway she also loves arroz con pollo. it was one of the first meals she taught yang how to make.

the twins: raven's is braised rabbit & qrow's is venison stew... they probably only get to eat it once or twice a year. (branwen twins "don't make it obvious we grew up in the woods" challenge: failed.) a plate of steak & potatoes would also make them happy. butttt their favorite childhood meal was oyakodon 👍 i can imagine qrow making it for ruby & yang sometimes when they were young.

tai: mapo tofu (with extra chili flakes) he seems like the type to have a pantry shelf just for a hot sauce collection. second place is his shrimp fried rice. yang is allergic to shellfish. this was a crushing blow to him.

Feel free to bypass if I’m overstepping but can you explain what you mean by Tay’s parents building their lives around him? That’s what parents are supposed to do, correct? (I know there is many bad parents, but assumption is of good parents here) Or there is more to what that means?

English isn’t my first language, maybe I am making this more complicated than needs be! 🤦🏿‍♀️

It's hard to explain without telling stories that arent mine to tell, but everything down to the job his dad works was specifically chosen to better support Tay and the rest of the family. A lot of parents work hard to provide for their kids, but like... his parents really went above and beyond to make sure Tay can live at home instead of a hospital his whole life.

The amount of insurance paperwork alone to get all the therapies and doctors' visits and equipment would have to be a full-time job. I don't think most parents, even well-intentioned parents who want the best for their kids, would be able to give Tay the life at home and in the community that he has now. It's really cool to see how much he's blossomed and grown over the years because of their support.

Digimon headcanon: Taichi, the king of braiding (and the others being impressed)

I'm working on a WIP that's been living in my head for way too long now and then this list of headcanons rolled out of me. Also thanks to Sanni @seventeenlovesthree.

When Taichi was younger, he always watched his mother braiding Hikari's (short, yes I'm aware it's short, but let her hair be braided) hair. Yuuko saw how much just watching calmed Taichi, so at one point she decided to teach him.

Ever since learning how to braid, Taichi became a pro. He watched little tutorials on television showing all different kinds of braids which he tried on Hikari and even his mother. He made them swear though they wouldn't talk about it to anyone!

But then there's Sora. Sora compliments Yuuko on one of her braids when she comes home with Taichi after soccer practice. Yuuko doesn't think and straight up tells it's done by her son. Sora doesn't believe it and makes Taichi proof himself. He makes her the greatest braid ever. Sora is in love with it, but doesn't admit it. Taichi is now in love with Sora's hair, but doesn't admit it either.

(Remember that one time Sora wore a braid in Tri? It's secretly Taichi's.)

Also remember that one time Taichi, Yamato and Koushiro took the 02 squad camping as a facade? Taichi totally braided Yamato's hair in his sleep and made Koushiro film it. Yamato is mad (but he's also quite impressed with Taichi's skills to make his rock-n-roll hair look so... soft)

Of course now everyone knows about Taichi's braiding powers and once Mimi takes notice... Like a true princess, she claims Taichi as her personal braider. Peak Mimi and Taichi bonding ensues.

Joe is also impressed and secretly asks whether Taichi can teach him, since he wants to bond with his secret girl crush bike girl.

Takeru also becomes one of Taichi's apprentices. He's really good at it. Taichi asks Takeru to braid his brother's hair whenever they have a sleepover. Takeru is all here for that.

Miyako would claim Takeru as her personal braider, because "Hikari-chan and Mimi-san already have Taichi as theirs. I need one too!"

Daisuke is really impressed by his senpai's skills and decides to surprise him by becoming an autodidact. He knows Jun will never let him touch her hair, so he goes to Ken, who gladly accepts.

No matter Taichi's life partner/spouse/wife/husband or whatsover: their kids will own the most beautiful braided hair in the world <3

one of my absolute favorite bugs, antares (my scolopendra dehaani centipede), passed away last week and it was pretty embarrassingly upsetting for me considering the fact that I had him for less than two full months, but he was so calm and sweet especially considering how bad of a place he came from before I rescued him so I got super attached. anyway, to work through my own Issues, here's my headcanons on how brad handles death among his own pet bugs:

for starters, brad shuts down VERY easily (it's a survival tactic, one that many people who have suffered abuse are intimately familiar with), and something as devastating as losing a beloved pet is no different. as bad as it sounds, he would do what im doing right now with antares - refuse to touch the enclosure or the body for the first several days, hating himself whenever he accidentally glances at it because he somehow manages to find a way to blame himself for the death regardless of the pet's age or prior health. that's the worst part of keeping bugs: there aren't any vets you can turn to for help, so you'll never truly know who to blame for a bug's death.

once he's done avoiding the pet and their enclosure, it's time to discard the body, which is always the part he hates the most. he hates touching dead bugs, hates the way they're limp and lifeless and can't fight back or run or stop him from handling them. he doesn't want pets that won't snap back at him for disrespecting their space, and a dead body can't do anything at all.

brad always buries his bugs. he doesn't have the heart to throw them away like trash (they're so much more than garbage to him, even dead), but he cares too much to feed the bodies to his other pets, so he goes to the local park a few blocks from his apartment building in the middle of the night and buries them. he always buries them beneath the mulch where trees are allowed to grow as they please, hoping that one day, fifty years in the future, they'll become a tree and live on and thrive without him.

brad isn't naïve or stupid. he knows the dead bodies of his beloved bugs won't turn into trees. but sometimes, when he loses a particularly close pet, he allows himself to believe they will. because then, even if they suffered under brad's care because he somehow fucked everything up (he has a funny way of doing that), at least they can have a new life, free of suffering and walls. a life where they can be admired and appreciated by thousands of people, rather than by just brad.

a life away from someone who may or may not have accidentally killed them because he has a nasty habit of losing (killing) everything he loves.

I don't think this particularly means anything, but I did just realize that the "four great sects" setups in MDZS and Tai Sui are kind of similar.

Both present a world that used to have five great sects until war erupted between the fifth and at least one of its counterparts. This war leads to the fifth sect's absolute destruction.

Then, in the aftermath of the war, the former fifth sect's resources are split amongst the remaining four sects, and the people once associated with it become pariahs. Those once part of the fifth sect are made to live somewhere otherwise unlivable, and they are generally treated as less than human for it.
