Does Dabi have big stamina from the training he did for years? Or just pure technique? Sorry, I don't know how strengths and powers work in a fictional story...

I would say just technique, but not stamina 🤔 he's able to mimick moves after seeing them in action, so that means he has an instinctual theoric understanding of the inner workings of a fire quirk. Even Shouto canonically comments on his technique.

As for stamina, however, he doesn't have a lot, but I suspect it might still be more than what he's given credit for by the heroes. I think (but take it with a grain of salt!) that Horikoshi might be trying to show us a certain bias. The heroes are known to have underestimated the villains for two arcs in a row now, and it always comes back to bite them in the ass.

Take, for example, this scene. This was Hawks' breakdown of Dabi's abilities. He observed his fighting style, the weaker blasts, the steaming, and deduced: oh, you have shit stamina. You've been talking a lot to buy yourself time and hoped we wouldn't notice. Good. We can exploit that to escape while you're stuck attempting to cool down.

And then, bam,

Dabi chases after them anyway, and with one of his dad's moves to boot. This is the first time Dabi shows us his great technique and control. Till then, he'd only been fighting with big bursts of all-encompassing flames, and nothing about his fighting style indicated that he had any finer techniques or a good battle sense. Yet, Dabi proves them wrong. Not only, despite being near his limits, does he still possess enough lucidity to maintain his body in the air, carefully balanced a few stories high without plummeting to his death, but he also admits to having planned this. He knew his low stamina would be weaponized against him, and he consciously saved strength to make himself last longer.

But how low is his stamina, really? This is where things get foggier. If we are to take Hawks' assessment at face value, then Dabi would have pretty similar stamina levels as Enji. That is, both of them need time to recuperate between firing huge blasts. This reading seems supported by the fact that both are prone to internally overheating and thus putting their lives on the line the longer a fight drags on, and the more huge blasts they fire off:

Enji appears to have more stamina than Dabi because his body has fire resistance, but if you pay attention to his big showdowns, you'll notice that the longer a match draws out, the weaker he becomes. By the end of the fight against the High End, his internal temperature was so high his vision was blurry, and he couldn't stand up straight without assistance. He sustained injuries from the noumu, but what really took a toll on him was his quirk. Another nod at his weakening stamina in long fights is the scene above. Notice how he's steaming in a way really reminiscent of Dabi.

They share the same quirk drawback. But while Enji's manifests in a boiling of his internal organs that, and I quote, "slows down [his] whole system", Dabi doesn't ever shows that side effect. In fact, in Dabi's case, the result of overheating is the worsening of his burns.

Part of this might be attributed to the numbness to pain he gained after the surgeries:

Notice the sfx. He's sizzling and burning, yet he doesn't feel it anymore.

But Enji shows symptoms more similar to heathstroke or other overheat-related conditions than that:

Sweating, dizziness, confusion, plus that characteristic swimming of his vision. As far as we know, Dabi doesn't experience the same kind of drawbacks. Even when he fight a lot, he appears fully lucid, he stands up straight without needing to lean on people or things, and he doesn't suffer shortness of breath like Enji does here. Yet, as he admits to Hawks and Tokoyami, he still needs to pace himself. But why?

My idea (and take it with a grain of salt) is that Hawks' assessment above was only partly correct. Yes, Dabi too needs cooling down time between big attacks, but unlike Enji, it's not because Dabi would collapse from heat exhaustion otherwise. Dabi has an abnormal resistance to that because of his numbness to new burns. A resistance that far exceeds that of other fire users on a similar power scale as him. But, unlike other fire users, Dabi has a body made for an ice quirk, and that's why he needs that time. Unlike Enji, Dabi can fire multiple big blasts in a row without a... System shutdown, so to speak. But if he does, the drawback is expanding his burns. Which, I'm assuming, wouldn't impact Dabi's stamina, but it would substantially affect his body's... Durability, for lack of a better term. Eventually, he'll be more scar tissue than healthy skin, and while he might be able to push through it thanks to his numb pain receptors for the time being, eventually his body will give out under the constant strain of keeping up with an incompatible quirk.

Human bodies, even in a fantasy setting like bnha's, aren't meant to sustain that kind of stress in the long run. That's why Horikoshi introduced the concept of quirk drawbacks. Pushing your limits in a controlled manner like, say, Iida carving out his engines to grow stronger ones, is one thing, but doing so at the cost of permanent damage to an individual's health always spells out trouble.

The thing is, normally Dabi's a cautious fighter. He knows when to stop to avoid permanent damage. But right now he's in a suicidal mindset and he doesn't care about preserving his strength for later anymore. Since he hadn't felt pain from the burns since he was 16, his holding back was always more for preserving a good enough physical condition to eventually face his dad, rather than wariness of his limits. Now, even that mental limitation is no longer necessary. This is the end of the line, for him, so he's going all out. He won't survive this, so what use is caring about giving his body the time to recuperate, to cool down?

So, to sum it up: I think Dabi does possess some stamina, though not enough to sustain his quirk. His overheating doesn't affect him the way it does his father. Instead of slowing down his body and affecting his lucidity, and thus his endurance in a fight, it manifests as physical burning as opposed to burnout and fatigue. So he spaces out his attacks to try and counter the inexorable progression of said burns, which he cannot avoid entirely, only contain.

While it's true that in the present fight against Shouto he fired off several big attacks in a row, I wouldn't take that as a sign of heightened stamina, then. The steaming and burning were always used as a dead giveaway of Dabi approaching his limits. And now he's burning at a much faster rate than usual. So even if it's true that this fight is probably the longest he's ever fought, I'd say that's more telling of how little he's valuing his life at the moment, rather than of his abilities

BNHA 355 - Thoughts

Even after a couple of read-throughs, I feel ambivalent about this chapter, tbh.  Some critical thoughts under the cut, so DLDR please. 

But let’s start with the positive. 

The things I like:

- Endeavor hitting rock bottom (I thought the hospital was it, but no - there was even further down, lol), and him thinking about his kids without all the self-justifying BS was a good moment. For the first time, he calls Touya by name, for the first time, it is not their quirks that’s in the center. It’s the biggest emotional pay-off in this chapter - something that was built for a long time. (But also, it’s sad that it was the most emotional bit)

- Jirou getting the spotlight, with Hawks and Tokoyami supporting her. The way she is out of her element, experiences mortal fear and overcomes it to act is good - though I think too short to have the emotions sink in. Her injury looked bad, but since Eri being in the series, these just don’t hold the weight they should (which is why I hate her being this plot device looming over the narrative). 

- Hawks being a quick-thinking gritty fighter is always fun to watch. The fight choreography was for once pretty dynamic and the combos were good. 

- The art / music references were spot on. Great panelling. 

- I even like the narrative of the power of the weak adding up, and AFO’s hubris is biting him in the ass - just not the execution. And so we come to....

The things I dislike:

- In the end, Jirou’s moment still falls flat for me, unfortunately. She’s one of my fave Class A girls and I want to be hype and yet... I think it is because of how rushed this fight is. Side characters like Gentle got longer / more developed fights than AFO here. We saw 1 initial hit by Hawks, 2 moves by Endeavor + Hawks, 2 moves by Jirou (one block and one attack), and 1 more hit by Hawks.  AFO’s mask broke from 4 sword hits (is it made of cheap plastic????) in the end. And AFO feeling like a weak, incompetent troll with nothing to back up his trash talk kind of devalues this moment overall.

- Jirou’s great moment had a very distinct ass-pull feel to it. Now don’t get me wrong, in the grand scheme of things, it makes sense, because the premise of the entire manga is Deku smacking the Sludge Villain with a backpack that somehow qualifies him as greatest hero. Deku got many wins like this - so I guess endgame will give it to others as well. So the vestiges happen to react to Jirou’s cry just now after everything they’ve seen or experienced? Like, why not? But also - how convenient. Just like these moments never worked for me when it was Deku - it doesn’t work for me now either. I don’t want the “everyone can be a hero” theme to boil down to “everyone can make suicidal, rush in with no plan or hope” kind of actions and if they are in Class A, it will magically be OK for them. I prefer preparation and combo moves that build on intuition and conscious planning, thinking, foresight. I prefer non-conventional acts of heroism - that highlight that being a hero =/= beating up bad guys only.  I like characters making their training work for them or overcoming a wall through character development.  I feel like there is barely any build-up here, so there is no good pay-off. If Jirou met AFO earlier in the story, she could have done this exact same thing - and if she was lucky, the vestiges would have responded to her.  She deserved better build-up than this. 

-  The Hawks moments felt rushed to me. We ticked the boxes - unwavering faith in Endeavor even now, acknowledging Tokoyami, confronting his reduced abilities, getting inspired by the kids - but it didn’t feel enough after what Hawks went through and experienced in the last war or how he miscalculated with not having a proper Plan B. The art was great though. 

Overall though, what makes me most uncomfortable about this chapter is that the direction it signals is a speed-run to the end. I can see next chapter Dark Shadow going beserk over Jirou’s injury (a la Heroes Rising, where we had this exact plot point just with Mina), Endeavor resurging through some “I need to do this, so I can get to my sons” kind of “dad-moment” (pls don’t ruin the Todo-plot, Hori) and finishing AFO, who merges with ShigarAFO and takes over there. 

I can see a couple of chapters of the other kids all having their plus ultra “for my friends” moments - and I do like Power of Friendship, but only where it’s earned. Like Shouto’s moment who we know had his life transformed by his friends felt earned. Jirou thinking of two characters she never interacted with in meaningful ways is just - meh. And it’s only 2/20. We have still 18 of these left? 

And then back to ShigarAFO being beaten by some BKDK combo stuff, Deku no jutsu-ing Vestige Tenko and then Tenko disintegrating the Vestige plane and AFO with it. 

So I’m worried now that we won’t get Touya and Toga and Spinner turning and helping out the heroes. 

Basically, I need a twist to make this endgame battle a bit more exciting than the kids executing the All Might-Aizawa-Hawks plan and going plus ultra / power of friendship when things start to look bad. I need to get a sense that things could go very bad - so the win in the end comes with a sense of triumph.

I now know what Tokoyami's story is! When he lost his memory, he was with Hawks. (Okay, so I'm going to confess. I stopped watching halfway through season 3. I plan to pick up, but I need to motivation to. Might do that soon. Anyway, I don't know Hawks, but I have a basic idea from the fandom so,if I'm wrong about something, please correct me!) Hawks mistook him for his little brother and Tokoyami didn’t remember anything that would refute this so, he went with it. So, they’ve been living together peacefully. Met Tsuyu and since I ship them, Tokoyami and Tsuyu end up together. Hawks gets sick with the Melani Nonos and he got to stage 3. He ended up dying from it, unfortunately. Tokoyami took it hard and it didn’t help when Tsuyu was taken to a facility one day. Then, Envy showed up (Envy is a villain from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Long story short, he's based off of the seven deadly sins, hence the name. If you want more detail, you may want to look him up.) told him about the whole bounty hunter thing. Told him of the deals and that it could at the very least bring back Hawks. Tokoyami, despite being at his lowest, doesn’t bite the bait and leaves. However, Envy doesn’t give up. He has shapeshifting abilities and can shapeshift into anyone. He takes the form of Hawks and Tsuyu and basically “haunts” Tokoyami until, he ends up saying yes to the offer. He finds very quickly that while, the deal had worked (Hawks is alive and not sick anymore.), he had been played. Tokoyami knows that Hawks is looking for him, but Tokoyami is scared if he runs into him again, Hawks will get sick and die again. So, like Izuku, he stays out of sight of the person that's looking for him. Meanwhile, along the way of looking for Tokoyami, he finds Dabi doing something similar to himself. So, they team up to look for Shoto and Tokoyami.

I like this. Definitely add some spooky elements to the fic

I ll give some. Some Japanese fans are confused why Endeavor overreacted to AFO. Otherwise majority posts are antis who have come out of the woodworks. These I won't coz it's depressing. Among nonantis, some critical are just salty. Wondering whats going on in a final arc and why Hori couldn't just chose between going for KusoDVman or atonement instead of swing towards former and needing to overdo punishment. Some are like it's best the twisted relationship between him and Hawks concludes

Hawks relation is one-sided and imaginary. He sees Endeavor as the hero and wants to support that hero Endeavor for the good of many people even if it means sacrifing himself for both. "I cannot replace Endeavor to you but I can support you" it's good tokoyami can be such a person for hawks instead of the doll who can answer who saves the hero. But seems hawks cannot be for Endeavor who cannot hear him anymore and their relationship is too twisted on a misunderstanding on hawks part. If he can

If hawks can easily turn his back to prioritise peace isn't that he can for Endeavor? Seeing only in win or loss for professional peace, hawks needs him to the hero who inspired him and share his ideal. But afo says ende longing for power twisted so it was selfish kuso all along. Ende is weak nd sensitive he isn't meaning to but he's disappointing both shoto nd hawks by not being wat they want even though hawks will never leave his side. He can't be hero now his hero origin cloudy for power

I don't think that Enji overreacting to OFA is a bad idea but I think it was awfully delivered. He is characterised as a man who just losses it when his family is in danger. He couldn't move when Natsuo was hurt, the same happened during Dabi's reveal. It is his weakness but not a flaw. I don't feel like it's something that needs fixing or that it was ever presented as something that needs fixing so seeing him overreact is, well, expected. AFO abusing this weakness is classic, Enji overreacting is too but because we do not see any inner dialogue it all feels quick and confusing and worst of all it feels like a cheap trick to remove Enji and make way for a new generation. It would be in character for him to react like this. It also can make sense story-wise (idk what happens next) but the way it is, it was very dissatisfying because for some reason instead of Enji's inner dialogue we listened to Hawks's perspective the entire time

To be fair, Enji's lack of interest in Hawks does make it seem very one-sided. That could have been easily fixed if they shared a few moments as a big three (filler episode yay). And then it could have been displayed as Enji listening to Hawks but still losing it at some point but we wouldn't see it because the entire chapter is from Hawks's perspective for some reason (why????? At least split it)

It is also funny how everyone is like "oh no Enji's falling! Anyway Tokoyami and Jirou are here to save the day" like c'mon man!??

I don't think Enji is disappointing anyone. I understand what trope Horikoshi tried to play out but it was awful, it sucked so much ass. But I liked the idea.... Maybe if instead of focusing on Dabi vs Shouto first and on Enji+Hawks vs AFO second, maybe it would be better if the two fights happened more parallel and at the same time we would see AFO saying he took Touya's body we would see the reaction from Endeavor and at the very same moment a reaction from Shouto. But then it would be striking out how quickly Endeavor lost so I would prolong the fight and perhaps add something more, or maybe just show Enji losing before Shouto winning, so we first focus on Enji and then on Shouto

In short, shite

Like, c'mon if you show us someone being provoked you gotta show us what they are going through on the inside that is the juice

First Impression: My Hero Academia S6

The episode opens with a brief recap of the previous season, but after that, we hit the ground running! Hawks, still working undercover, has a fun little conversation with Twice about creating a credo for the Paranormal Liberation Front. Both acknowledge to themselves the respect they’re forming for each other. Meanwhile, Re-Destro is giving his troops an inspirational speech. Personally, I’d have opened with a joke, but promising to rock civilization works too. The villain side has a lot of moving and contrasting pieces. The PLF has its goals. Shigaraki and his group have their own plans to use them and turn on them.  And of course, Hawks is still working against all of them. Meanwhile, the heroes are putting together a strategy themselves. Edgeshot will be leading a team to battle against the PLF including some of our student heroes. Kirishima, Tokoyami, Komori, and Honenuku, being long-range fighters, are at the front line, a fact that makes Komori very nervous. But we get a very sweet moment with Midnight taking the time to comfort her. We get a brief scene with Deku, Bakugo and the rest (the Professor and Mary Ann?) but we don’t see much of them in this episode. The other team on this mission is led by Endeavor attempting to capture Dr. Garaki who has been assisting All For One for years. It actually seems like a pretty easy process and they get him quickly, only to discover that he was a Twice clone before a new chimera like nomu appears.  Mirko separately manages to get past a few nomus herself before finding the actual Garaki and a still incubating Shigaraki. I’m sure his hatching will be a beautiful sight.

I’m already a huge My Hero Academia anime fan and manga reader so I was very excited for the start of the new season. In the previous seasons, they would open with a little recap episode to get you caught up, so the fact that this one doesn’t follow that pattern is unusual, but very welcome. It really felt like a lot happened in these short 24 minutes. I like how the show didn’t waste any time getting to the action, drawing us right back into the story. I do wish we could’ve gotten a little more of Deku, Bakugo and the others after not seeing them for so long, but I’m pumped for what’s to come. It’s going to be an exciting season of superhero anime action!

BnHA Chapter 271: My Hero Tokodemia

Previously on BnHA: Mic was all “goodbye X-Less don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” and just LEFT him with Tomura, like. ???! X-Less was all “I’m gonna sit here and do nothing and wait to die.” Ujiko was all “this has nothing to do with ANYTHING but I just want you to know that I conspired to murder your husband 15 years ago and ended up killing his best friend instead!” Tomura was all “what up bitches I’m in this chapter too” and had trippy dreams about hands and buildings and his family was there and also All for One (the dude)! Because guess what, Tomura has All For One (the quirk) now! Because AFO gave it to him! So yeah! And now he’s waking up, and Deku can apparently feel it happening because he’s a horcrux probably, and so basically everything is FINALLY GOING TO SHIT AND IT’S ABOUT TIME BUT ALSO AHHHHH.

Today on BnHA: SHIGARAKI WHO TOMURA WHAT. Back to Gunga Mountain! So Dabi is all “you do know your beloved mentor just killed a guy right?” and Toko is all “!!” and Dabi is all “SO THAT MAKES HIM THE WORST CRIMINAL OF ALL!” and, WITHOUT THE SLIGHTEST HINT OF IRONY, IMMEDIATELY follows up this bold statement by TRYING TO BURN A CHILD ALIVE. Anyway so this is why Dabi wasn’t the keynote speaker at the “murder is bad” convention though. So most of the chapter is like this, with Dabi (albeit somewhat halfheartedly) trying to set Toko on fire while Toko desperately tries to keep between him and Hawks. Eventually though, Dabi is confusingly thwarted by Otter Pops, making his triumphant return and spraying a bunch of ice just every which way because things weren’t chaotic enough I guess! And then the chapter ends with everyone’s favorite Guy They Hoped Wouldn’t Be Waking Up In This Arc, Gigantomachia, waking up!! :’) :’) :’) etc you get it.

okay so I am please to clarify that the spoilers I received were not actually all that big of a deal, and that pretty much all I know is that we’re cutting back to Dabi and Tokoyami probably, and there’s a good chance we might not even see Tomura at all this chapter in spite of last week’s cliffhanger. so even if I’d have preferred not to know that up front, it’s all good! though I will say Horikoshi has a real knack for cutting away from things right when you’re at your most invested though. reminds me of what it was like reading Lord of the Rings for the first time. “nooo I don’t want to cut back to Frodo -- WAIT WHAT’S GOING ON -- NO I DON’T WANT TO CUT BACK TO MERRY AND PIPPIN DAMMIT -- WAIT WHAT”

TETSUTETSU SHIINA quirk: mercury - can turn himself into mercury, pure or variations of it with the nature of the mercury in his body, he has to be mindful of keeping his body in check as to not accidentally poison people. he’s more often than not stays quite as he gets jittery and becomes scared easily, where he would melt away into a puddle and tries to run away. however he’s very stubborn and won’t stop until he achieves his goals. close to kyousei as their parents hangs around a lot even though they live in different cities. likes hugs but only from family

OJIRO ASAHI quirk: prehensile hair - strong and can be controled like an extra limb, very tough tooru likes to spoil her and dress her up in cute clothes, hates it how her hair takes away all the nutrients she eats. tooru gets called to go on a lot of info gathering missions so she's not home often, and when she does come home she showers her with a lot of attention. she finds it overbearing. close with dad, he teaches her martial arts for fun. has both a cat and a hamster, they're the only ones allowed to touch her hair.

YAOYOROZU ITSUKI quirk: marionette - has a cord at the back of his neck, objects poked by it can be controlled gender is a social construct. doesn’t see the benefit of holding things back. easy going and laid back, going through the motion as he sees fit. he’s very close to his parents, sharing the same interest in music as kyouka and momo happily spending as much time as she can with him, hoping to do things she wasn’t able to with her parents as a child, so he really doesn’t feel lonely all that much.

ASHIDO KURASHI quirk: hallucinogen - produces hallucination inducing liquid looks like she wears her heart on her sleeves and doesn’t bother with hiding anything. looks like an air head but not really. when her quirk started to show many adults became wary of her, equating her quirk to that of drugs and not want her anywhere near them or their children.more into non violent approaches. she’s also very touchy.

KAMINARI ARASHI quirk: technopath - controls electrial appliances and uses them as he pleases at 7 years old he was saved by denki during a break in after being used by a group of villains. ditching his old self he changed basically everything about himself as he can and took a new name. he and denki likes to play together, and he can often be found with hanta on top of tall buildings in tokyo. he especially admires katsuki’s no-shit-taking personality and is a big fan of his. he’s no good with dark cramp places

IIDA TENMA quirk: repulsor - creats blasts from his palms and soles, can be used for prepulsion ochako and tenya had him soon after graduation before they really made a name for themselves. cheery and very dedicated, he trains from a young age in various styles of martial arts. he’s doesn’t half ass what he does. he often get into fights helping people, so much so that that’s when he got his quirk, where before the exhaust on his palms and soles only gives out puffs of smoke. can often be seen not wearing shoes. his hair is very fluffy

IIDA FUBUKI quirk: ac - expels hot and cold air she’s strong willed with a strong sense of justice, asping to be a hero, tho in a different kind as what her father used to be. she strives to help people with issues that couldn’t easily be solved by heroes. she love kids, often babysitting her cousins, more often than not mostly tenma uses her to cool himself after training.

TODOROKI YUKIMURA HOMURA quirk: cremation - burns whatever she touces with all her fingers dabi and tomura fucked during the later's heat. he never wanted kids so when she was taken he never fought it. dabi and his family never knew about her until rei was contacted to take her cause her quirk was unstable and the orphanage felt threatened. natsuo and his wife took her in and she moved with them to hokkaido. she visits during vacation to hang out with her cousins. dabi made a pack with the hero commission to be let out of tartarus to be under hawk's watch to be there for her however he can. she knows the most about her family’s pasts

Why I've warmed up to "Baby Bird"

With the release of the third MHA movie in Japanese theaters, they released a short chapter featuring Endeavor, Bakugo, Deku, Shouto, Tokoyami, and most importantly Hawks. A translation/preview/breakdown of the chapter here.

But long story short, we got this interaction between him and his fans when they spotted him at the airport. He says roughly, "Hey, baby birds! Let's not make a ruckus, we're in an airport-" before getting completely mobbed.

Now, up to this point "baby bird" was a nickname we only saw Hawks using in fanfiction, and it really took off during the wave of new followers he got after a particularly popular set of fics went viral in the community. However, it left a sour note in a lot of people's mouths, and mine in particular was due to the fact I tended to find these fics warped his character a little too much for the sake of drama which only got worse as people followed, emulated, and really got behind the movement. I simply didn't like it because I associated the nickname with a widely known OC who looked like Hawks but was barely recognizable from a character standpoint.

So what changed?

Basically, I heard it from Hawks' mouth himself - the same Hawks I've known and loved from his introduction.

Hawks doesn't care that he's about to be mobbed by his fans. He also doesn't look overly excited for the attention. He's just completely unbothered by it either way.

It sounds like either a nickname he gave to his fans or more likely one they made for themselves that he acknowledges in their presence the same way BTS calls their fans the BTS Army. The kanji for the words he used literally means a bird's chick, so it's a perfectly innocent nickname that doesn't carry some of the more racy connotations a lot of fanfics have given it.

Hawks makes a note to give his fans little interactions whenever he's spotted on the street. Literally every time someone shouts "HAWKS!" when he's on the rooftops or flying overhead he gives them a smile and a wave acknowledging their presence. We also know that this isn't a fake act he plays up for PR because he frankly doesn't need it or care for the attention - it's something he does entirely for the benefit of his fans, and these little casual, personal interactions are very much in character for him.

He's performing crowd control even if it doesn't look like it on the surface. Do you really think these fans that straight up tackle him and pick him up twice in so many minutes would actually stop chasing him around the airport if he ran? No, that's a much bigger disruption for everyone else just trying to board their plane and go about their business. He could choose to leave, but there would be a rowdy mob following him around trying to get his attention the whole way.

Last, but most importantly, he is letting his fans be in complete control of the interaction.

This absolute gem of a panel, if I'm not mistaken, has him saying, "Ah, they don't want to stop!" as he's being whisked away. There is no power dynamic he's leveraging. He finds a way to let his fans have their fun in a safe setting while being mindful of the people around him, and it doesn't even phase him.

As a platonic, innocent nickname now spoken from Hawks himself acting true to character, "baby bird" is kind of growing on me.

So I don’t know if you will see this @eva-white-11, because I can’t tag you, but you inspired me to do this entire post about Tokoyami, so this is for you and everybody else who loves him. Also this ended up with me noticing some wonderful writing parallels with Tokoyami and Hawks that I had to put in here. This is neither pro nor anti Hawks, this is simply an analysis of what is given.

I talked about quirk discrimination in regards of Spinner plenty and I have called Tokoyami “non-threatening”, to which I got asked how I can think that he’d be seen like that, seeing as ravens and crows are generally regarded as a bad thing and Dark Shadow is very demonic.

While both birds are associated with a lot of positive traits, such as intelligence, adaptability, partnership, foresight and transformation they are also often regarded as something sinister in the western world. Especially in the association with the famous plague masks they tend to be seen as a sign of death.

This is in stark contrast to Japanese culture, where crows are seen as something positive. Aside from the fact that the crows are playing a huge part in keeping cities rodent free, which is notable mentioned in Tokyo the mythological creature of the Yatagarasu (eight-span-crow) has a very positive background.

The three-legged crow is a creature that appears in multiple mythologies through East Asia, the Japanese Yatagarasu is a sign of rebirth, heaven, rejuvenation and divine intervention. Seeing as they clean up after death, especially being seen on battlefields eating the dead, which not only is a sign of the battle ending and something new beginning, it has also the practical effect that the bodies of the dead are being broken down preventing potential health threats to the living.

Tokoyami’s name comes from Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto a deity with similar heavenly background, to be precise: the moon. The name Tsukuyomi having meanings as “moon bow” or “moonlit night” “looking, watching” even “reading”. Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto is the brother of Amaterasu, the sun goddess of Shinto, and to cut a long story short: he killed another goddess, his sister got angry so she moved to another part of the sky, splitting night and day. And looking at Tokoyami’s actual spelling we get “everlasting darkness”, which fits rather well with the deity and his quirk.

His first name Fumikage’s spelling also litereally means “step, to walk through shadow”, being a direct recall to both darkness and his quirk Dark Shadow.

So Tokoyami’s name is based on the darkness, the night and the moon, but in natural manner, rather than a threatening one.

If we’re looking at Dark Shadow he’s often associated with the Enerna, a monster made of smoke and darkness that can take human form that was most likely born from the imagination of Toriyama Sekien, but that generally fits Dark Shadow rather well. And Toriyama Sekien works are known to have great influence of the public view on mythological creatures, even though his works were mostly parodic.

And because HK is a huge Marvel & DC fan, I’m going to mention Raven from DC and Venom from Marvel real quick.

Raven is a young heroine from DC Comics, usually part of the Teen Titans, which has to keep control over her powers because they otherwise can get very dangerous if unleashed. Aside from the power similarity she also has a very dark, Goth appearance, can have her body taken over while she sleeps and obviously has a direct bird relation through her name.

Venom an Anti-Hero from Marvel on the other hand is a symbiont mostly partnered with Eddie Brook, although he’s had quite a few other hosts including Peter Parker and notably Flash Thompson. In both cases there is a deep emotional connection between Venom/Eddie and Dark Shadow/Tokoyami and both can be a direct life threat to other, especially if their host is attacked.

All in all I think in bnha Japan Tokoyami has a far more positive view through his appearance as if he lived in the bnha western world, seeing as in our real world crows are seen as something darker in contrast to Japan.

Tokoyami seems more like a “night crow”, something new, something from above, something better, but instead of the sun, the light he is in the dark, the night, the shadows, but that doesn’t make him bad at all.

This would be a direct contrast to Hawks, who stands for light and the Icarus tale of flying to close to the sun.

Hawks is out in daylight with his sunny demeanor, flying like a bird wanting to be free like one. But behind this is a very dark history of abuse from his parents, of the hero commission using him and of the very controlled murder of Twice.

This is a direct contrast to Tokoyami. He is more grounded because of Dark Shadow, because he has to be careful, he needs to keep control over his powers because he could accidentally hurt someone if Dark Shadow went rouge, as seen in the forest. He is the one who saves Hawks; he kept the PLF at bay and fought Re-Destro all because he kept control over Dark Shadow.

Hawks did not lose control over himself when he killed Twice, which was on purpose, he used control something that is essential to his student and savior Tokoyami to take a life, and this is just a wonderful contrast between the two of them.

Hawks took Tokoyami in as a student because “they are both birds”, but Tokoyami is the next generation of Hakws, a better version, all while being in the dark shadows in contrast to flying into the sun.

Oh and apparently he got called a Myna in the light novels, which depending on who it came from might be a huge insult or a great meta joke, because some mynas are considered talking birds, aka they can reproduce sounds, including human speech (so far only seen in captivity).

Idk if this is unpopular but I think quirk singularity is a dumb plot device. What is the need for it in the story?

I feel the opposite - I think Quirk Singularity is absolutely necessary at this point to make the OFA-AFO plot at least somewhat interesting. 

1. Let’s recap what is quirk singularity?

Quirk singularity means that (1) with each generation powers become more complex and stronger (2) this means quirk will be more difficult to control, since the human body doesn't evolve quickly enough to keep up (3)  there will come a point when Quirks will become too overpowered and complicated, and no one will be able to control them anymore.

Basically, quirk singularity puts a limit on the power a single person can hold and poses an interesting and complex ultimate threat at the level of society that relies on ever-increasing powers to solve its problems. How can you solve the problem with more power if more power is the problem itself?

2. How the limits quirk singularity presented manifest in the story and why they are important?

Powers having a drawback is essential for good the story-telling. There is nothing more boring than characters who are so powerful that they can always do whatever they want, there is no real danger, real stakes and at most they are inconvenienced from using their power. It’s difficult to put such characters in suspenseful or dramatic scenarios where the audience really feel that they may lose or fail.

So in the BNHA universe, generally, all people have a single quirk. All these quirks are limited in some way or have some built-in drawbacks:

- Top-level quirk with versatility, but still with soft upper limits (there is always a plus ultra at a price), the holder’s personality flaws lead to self-sabotage (e.g. Bakugou, Endeavor)

- Top level quirk with versatility and no hard upper limit, but the holder can’t fully wield it unless they overcome underlying trauma linked to the power itself (e.g. Todoroki)

- Top power-level quirk with a single ultimate weakness (Hawks, Tokoyami, Aizawa) or the use of which starts a cooldown period (Kaminari) or the power is limited for stockpile resource (Eri, Momo)

- Mid-level powers that can do one thing really well (Kirishima, Iida, Mina) or more support nature powers that are versatile but do not have a lot of raw output attached to fragile users (Froppy, Jirou)

- low-level powers.

But the Top Good (OFA) and Top Evil (AFO) are not limited to a single power - they can acquire multiple powers. 

AFO’s power limitation is how much quirks his body can absorb. As evidenced by the existence of the nomu - multiple powers usually come at the price of losing one’s humanity. But luckily for AFO, he has Evil Scientist as sidekick, who can find a way around this problem by evil sciencing (modifying a body to create hosts for AFOs upgrades).

OFA is a power that started out weak and has been built through generations through self-sacrifice to reach the point where it could compete with AFO, but not quite eliminate it (All Might era). 

Without quirk singularity, this battle of evil and good would continue forever without stakes until AFO and OFA-users are chucking planets at each other, but now OFA has reached it’s full potential and the tipping point where it cannot be transferred anymore, creating a now-or-never situation to defeat AFO. 

This puts the protagonist under some pressure and creates some stakes. If he can’t win, everyone is doomed. (Unfortunately we already know that Deku will not fail because it’s stated in Chapter 1, so it’s not exactly the biggest suspense, but better than nothing)

3. How could quirk singularity apply better to OFA ?

So we saw with AFO, how quirk singularity is a real barrier to his continuous power-ups. Failed nomu, the damage to Tomura’s body, the mental problems caused by the quirk upgrades are all interesting limits. 

In contrast, OFA’s limits I think were not very well handled. Especially, because of who Deku is as a protagonist. 

His goal is to become like All Might - the hero who was the ultimate Deus ex Machina of the universe, so powerful that he inadvertedly created a terrrible system reliant on that incredible power of a single person. Deku is trying to follow in his footsteps.  

So where lies Deku’s conflict or challenge or limitation?

He’s morally perfect - already surpassing All Might in character from the start (as evidenced by his positive influence on people All Might failed, including All Might himself). He has no conflict as regards his goal - he’s not a reluctant chosen one - his goal is aligned with the power and legacy he gets. His power is a stronger version of All Might’s. So logically, he should be able to do everything alone that All Might could. 

So the limit doesn’t lie in Deku’s character, nor in the goal, nor in the power. So where is it? 

Because of quirk singularity, OFA has become more difficult to handle than it was at All Might’s time, which in the beginning gives Deku all kinds of limitaitons and broken bones, that he could only solve by lowering his power-output. He had to nerf himself to be able to continue. 

This is a good limitation, but unfortunately the story didn’t deliver so far on the consequences. While in the Muscular fight Deku permanently damages his arms, this damage didn’t really hold him back so far in a credible way. He wins against Overhaul with the biggest plot-device ever (Eri-backpack), and he manages to smash ShigarAFO endlessly without much visible harm. 

Also, because of “plot”, OFA underwent an evolution where it opened up the actual quirks of the previous users to Deku. This was in my view a very bad development, that made Deku less interesting. Suddenly, he had all these extra powers for free (so far neither Black Whip, nor Float came with any drawback whatsoever) that means:

- he can do everything better than other characters, making their niche powers redundant and sucking the oxygen out of their arcs (how could a Sero, Froppy or Uraraka fight look cool now that Deku can do all that but better and on a grander scale)? He has the most power, the most speed, long range, short range, snare, flight - basically the best of everything.

- he has a convenient tool for everything that gets him out of every situation and makes it so that the consequences he suffered because of OFA-singularity to his body don’t apply anymore - he could use Black Whip as a brace and continue smashing with broken arms, and even when his body was broken, he could help Todoroki with his tongue (unlike before in the Forest, when Bakugou was kidnapped).

These upgrades don’t come from any personal development or growth, but all come from OFA’s evolution. Deku also doesn’t struggle much with the extra powers (masters Black Whip in a week and Float instantenously - with some pre-training). 

Plus, in the latest chapters his quirklessness has been retconned into making him the perfect vessel, pretty much abandoning the physical consequences as a limit to OFA singularity. Whatever damage his body sustains is always repairable or can be overcome with new gizmos or using the extra quirks. 

So did multi-quirk OFA ruin the OFA plot irrevocably?

I think it did a lot of damage to Deku as a character (no growth, no conflict, no clear story-reason why he should be his own hero relying on others rather than still wanting to be an upgraded All Might-god), and to the story overall, by trivializing and making useless other characters who we as audience were invested in. Seeing everyone becoming nothing but fodder sucks big time in my view. 

But I think there could still be interesting things be done with OFA due to quirk singularity. As we’ve seen with Shigaraki and the nomu - multiple quirks come with a price to be paid not only physically, but also mentally. 

So far Deku is not paying any price for it though. All the extra quirks have come without drawbacks. Danger Sense has the potential to start wearing Deku down mentally though - due to sensing the crisis situations but not being able to be everywhere at once and wearing himself out.

Another thing I’d like to see is the pain and self-sacrifice of all the previous users taking a toll, as well as finally having some of these randomly chosen people to be not perfect. I think having multiple personalities living in Deku’s head shouldn’t look like a peaceful royal tea party. 

All these users gave up a lot to get Deku here, so I feel like there should be some pressure on him from inside to get the job done or at least some disagreement about Deku’s plan to make nice with Tomura instead of eliminating AFO (remember, it’s the last chance!). So I think maybe whatever chat he had with 2nd and 3rd provided some conflict between the wills of the previous users, resulting in conflicting wishes for Deku. 

All these could lead towards a mental exhaustion or breakdown that could be an interesting moment for Deku as a protagonist and really give him the clarity that repeating history is useless, a solo saviour is not the right answer, but changing the system and empowering everyone else is. 

Since the power-scaling of OFA is already off the charts, I think it would be good to make it hurt more. It should  feel like a terrible mental and physical burden (something like Frodo with the One Ring) to mirror Tomura being suffocated by AFO, so when the two powers destroy each other (which I really hope is the endgame), it will feel cathartic - that giving up and destroying that great power liberates Deku and saves his life so he can continue as a great hero (but scaled back towards the other in-universe top powers) who kept his humanity and his chance of a normal life full of meaningful bonds. 

I’m also wondering how the story will close the society-level quirk singularity plot. One option is that all quirks are somehow tied to AFO (it being the original source) so AFO’s destruction leads to the elimination or gradual decline of all quirks - which would be cohrerent with Deku being the “greatest” - he would hold the peak power at peak quirk level. 

Or it may be left unresolved, leaving the door open for a sequel where the ultimate “evil” is quirk singularity doomsday itself.

What if Tokoyami and Overhaul were related?

Overhaul is one my favorite villains! (My actual favorite is Chronostasis aka Kurono)

Okay so now you’re probably wondering, “Mono, how are you going to relate these two?”

Well I’m a Tokoyami/Overhaul encyclopedia and happen to know how to do this <3

Okay so starting off going off of cannon, these two could likely never be related. I imagine both were taken in by the Yakuza boss. (Assuming that Kai is at least 22 like Hawks, there’s a 6 year age gap) Based on context clues from the manga, Overhaul was found by the boss at age 6-10, so Tokoyami definitely would have been adopted later.

I certainly don’t think that Kai would have wanted to to speak to Tokoyami initially(due to his obvious “sickness”). Kurono is likely the one that got Kai to engage in a small conversation. Once he saw Dark Shadow though, Kai was definitely a lot more interested. He tried to get along better with Tokoyami just so he could study and speak to Dark Shadow as well. (he still thinks of DS as a parasite tho)

Tokoyami likely wouldn’t attend UA, but rather a school with Yakuza affiliation. He may still interact with some UA students like Midoriya, just because they live in the same province. I also doubt he would want to become a hero either. He would still receive training for his quirk due to his place in the Yakuza. I think Kai would try to train him in order to best utilize Dark Shadow’s ability. (I think Kai’s main goal of training him would be to see if they could separate)

When it comes to Eri, I don’t think Kai would let Tokoyami around her. Toko would likely know she lives somewhere in the base, but not exactly where. All of Tokoyami’s contributions would have to do with checking in with clients and taking care of meetings. When Kai decided to begin working with the League he knew it would be more dangerous for Tokoyami to be around. (He wanted at least one “heir” to be safe, but he knew he couldn’t leave himself or send Kurono off) He decides to send Tokoyami off on a “long-term surveillance job”. (It was literal bullshit but he wasn’t going to tell Tokoyami that)

So long story short, after the Yakuza arc Tokoyami becomes a vigilante(kinda). He won’t allow himself to align with the heroes or the League because they both disrespected his family.

Now if we weren't to go off of canon and just make these two brothers

Fumikage would probably have a different quirk. I imagine he'd be able to reconstruct things like Kai, but to keep some of his original quirk, lets say he can reconstruct shadows into different forms.

I think Kai would actually be a good brother. He'd want to make sure that Fumi stays clean and would shelter him from disgusting quirks. Even though Fumi does have a quirk, Kai doesn't think its as dirty as the rest of the world's since it doesn't deal with physical matter.

Fumi would still prbably attend a Yakuza affiliated school and all that jazz. However, Kai would likely not let Fumi interact with those outside of the Yakuza, and he would instead be tasked with taking care of Eri while he was home.(They run experiments while hes at school) He doesn't know the full extent of whats going on with her, but he knows better than to ask. He helps to educate Eri and acts as her older brother/tutor.

Once Kai starts working with the League he wouldn't know how to keep Fumi away from the situation. He knows he has to keep the League away from him, but hes got no good excuse to do so. So he just doesn't, one day he straight up goes "You're going to boarding school, pack ya shit" and sends Fumi off.

And once again, after the arc Fumi finds out the truth, becomes a vigilante, and now seeks to reunite with Eri.

Thats all I've got for that! Aaahhhhhh I really wanna make this into an AU! I might draw up some art one I've got the time.

“The fuck are you on about idiot?” Bakugo scowls. “I can still see the hickeys Red Riot left on your neck,” you grin as you begin walking. His face goes bright red as he catches up to you. “These aren’t-“ he begins but you cut him off rolling your eyes. “Don’t bother, we both know whatever lie you try to come up with won’t be a good one. May I suggest trying Fenty brand concealer out before you have your next rendezvous.” “Whatever, keep talking shit if you wanna keep living on Deku’s couch forever.” “What does your shitty job at covering up hickeys have to do with my technically being homeless?” “I might’ve found you a new place but the more you open your trap the less inclined I am to tell you about it.” “Have I ever told you you’re my best friend in the whole wide world and I love you so much?” Bakugo rolls his eyes so hard it’s a wonder they don’t fall out or get stuck. “Look Kirishima’s got a friend who went to high school with us, Mina Ashido. I’ll give her a call later today,” you tell him. “Whatever, let’s just get on with patrol,” Bakugo scoffs. You know he appreciates your thanks anyway.

You love patrolling with Bakugo because the two of you are equally competitive. Sure, on bigger takedowns you both know how to reign it in and focus, but on days like today where all you get is a small time robbery or two both of you let yourselves go a little bit. It’s all about who can round up the most villains in the least amount of time. These competitions were a large part in why you earned Bakugo’s respect and had been the beginning of a beautiful friendship, not that he would ever call it that. Your favorite tradition of you and Bakugo’s patrols, however, was the race back. Once you guys neared the end of your route, you would pause, do a short countdown and then you were off. First one back to the agency wins, the only rule was that you couldn’t do anything that could draw a bad headline i.e. destroying property or getting civilians caught in the crossfire. It was such a staple of the two of you’s patrol that many people had come to know them and you’d get the occasional group of spectators to watch you and the explosive blonde racing. The current record is 112-113 in Bakugo’s favor but you’re determined to fix that now. The two of you finally reach your usual starting point and both of you get a grin of anticipation. “Ready to watch me widen that lead?” Bakugo asks. “No way in hell, I’m tying it back up,” you fire back. You both look at each other and together countdown

You’re both sprinting forward careful to avoid any pedestrians. You see a clear path starting to open up ahead of Bakugo and quickly scan for an obstacle you can throw in his way last minute. Your eyes land on a mailbox so you reach out with your quirk and then wait to time it until just before he’s about to blast himself forward. Right as he’s surging forward, the finish line in sight and his hands sparking, you jerk the mailbox in front of him so he barrels directly into it. You give him a wink before sprinting the last bit inside, using your quirk to shove the doors open and slide into home as he is just getting back up off the ground. He runs inside shortly after you and you crow out your victory. “Eat shit, Katsuki! It’s 113 all now,” you laugh out of breath, panting as you bend over with your hands on your knees. “Can’t believe you hit me with a fucking mailbox,” he huffs back. “It’s not destruction of property so it’s valid,” you point out. You stand back up straight, chest still heaving with exertion and sweaty from the run only to look towards the elevators and see Hawks staring at you. You belatedly realize that Shoto is with him and also giving you a curious look and it only occurs to you then what an odd picture you and Bakugo must’ve made rushing into the agency like that. “We, uh, we race,” you pant out by way of explanation as you and Bakugo finally start to catch your breath and make your way towards the elevators.

As the four of you get into the elevator Bakugo asks “What brings you guys here?” “Apparently All Might and Father want us to get started on the investigation into the attempted terror attack at the gala last week. We finally got access to security camera footage, personnel interviews, stuff like that, so we should be able to make at least a little head way. Tokoyami and Midoriya are already upstairs getting started,” Shoto explains. Hawks is still fucking staring at you and you can’t figure out why but it’s borderline making you sweat again. Since that night in Shoto’s basement Hawks had been doing his best to woo you. He had sent not-so-anonymous notes and flowers to your desk signed off only as “From your mystery man” to avoid the potential scandal of you having a fling from the enemy agency. Even still you could tell that the lower ranking heroes were starting to whisper and wonder about who your new suitor is.

As the elevator reaches your floor and everyone steps out you’re keenly aware that you need to change back into your civilian clothes if you’re about to comb through security data and interviews for hours. “I’m gonna take a shower then I’ll join you guys,” you explain, jerking a finger towards the women’s locker room, before using your quirk to grab a duffel bag from your desk. “We’ll fill you in on anything we find,” Bakugo assures you and you nod before heading to the locker room. Once you’ve disappeared into the locker room Bakugo turns to Hawks and asks “Well? Aren’t you going to go after her?” “What?” Hawks asks as he’s finally snapped out of the trance you’d put him in from the moment he’d seen you sweaty and laughing, looking impossibly sexy in your hero costume. Shoto rolls his eyes. “You weren’t subtle. Something tells me you’d be too distracted to help right now anyway,” Shoto adds in.

Hawks tries not to look too eager as he follows after you but fails. He rushes to the locker room and locks the door behind him. It seems as if the top floor is pretty much reserved to you, Bakugo, and Midoriya but better safe than sorry. You’re already in the shower by the time Hawks arrives, the hot water rinsing away the sweat you’d worked up on patrol and any muscle aches that had been threatening to make an appearance. You hear footsteps approaching and immediately have a pretty good guess for who it is. “So that’s what all the staring was about,” you tease as you turn around to find Hawks leaning against the boundary between the showers and the drier part of the room where the actual lockers are. “How else did you expect me to react when you were looking so hot all sweaty and with that bright, beautiful smile of yours?” Hawks flirts. “Do you have an off button or?” you ask. “Aren’t you going to invite me in? We are a little pressed for time you know,” Hawks replies by way of an answer. You pretend to think for a moment but the reality is you knew and were hoping for this exact outcome the moment you heard the door open again. “Well, hurry up and get in here then,” you tell him. He’s all too eager to oblige.

He quickly strips out of his hero costume before coming to join you under the shower’s warm spray. Bakugo gives you a smirk as you walk in and you flip him off in return. Finally you take your seat and tune into the conversation, fully shifting into work mode.

By the end of the meeting you’ve managed to rule out the league of villains and most of the remaining yakuza groups out there but haven’t got much else. “There’s some similarities with a case I’ve been looking into from a month or so back. It was kicked lower down the food chain but I still have notes and I can probably get the files I’ll just have to swing back by Endeavor’s,” Hawks sighs. “Let’s deal with those tomorrow morning. Meet back here same time?” Midoriya asks. Everyone nods their agreement before rising to leave the conference room. “I should probably still grab those files tonight,” Hawks admits as you all walk out. “That’s cool, I’ll just roll with. No worries,” you shrug. “You’re the best you know that?” he grins. “Stop it, you’re embarrassing. Let me grab my shit real quick and then we can head out,” you tell him before running off to do just that. Shortly afterward Tokoyami walks up to Hawks. “I’m proud of you, Hawks,” he says and Hawks gives him an odd look. “What’re you talking about?” Hawks asks. “I was worried you’d freak out when you found out she worked for All Might. You know how Endeavor gets, still buying into the whole dumb feud thing. I’m glad you didn’t let that stop you though,” Tokoyami explains. “I mean yea Endeavor’s no fan of the guy, but he wouldn’t actually care about me seeing someone from All Might’s agency... right?” Hawks replies. Tokoyami’s eyes widen briefly but he coughs to cover up his reaction. “No, no, yea you’re probably right. Anyway, she’s good for you I feel like. I’m glad you two found each other,” Tokoyami finally says. Before Hawks can press any further you reappear in front of him and ask “Ready to go?” “Yea, I’m ready,” he says, throwing one last look at Tokoyami before shaking it off and following you back to the elevator.

Hawks is sort of quiet on the way over to Endeavor’s agency but you figure he must be thinking over the case still. It’s late so when you arrive at the office building the lobby is all but deserted except for one woman standing off to the side looking uncomfortable and lost. She’s older with thick hair and looks to have had a rough go of life if you had to guess. You notice her before Hawks does so you walk over to see if she’s ok. After all if she’s hanging out in the lobby of a hero agency this late at night she must be in trouble right? “Excuse me ma’am are you ok?” you ask the woman gently. She turns to you and the look in her eyes is almost distant. “I’m looking for my son,” she says mildly. You’re about to ask for more information on her son, like a physical description or where she’d lost him, when suddenly Hawks is right behind you. “What are you doing here?” he asks and his voice is cold in a way you’ve never heard before. You’re about to chastise him but stop short. You look from his face back to the woman’s. It can’t be. Can it? “Is that anyway to talk to your mother?” the woman asks and you have to resist the temptation to gasp audibly. Hawks grits his teeth, looking frustrated and you can’t help but let your eyes wander to the agency doors that any number of heroes could walk through at any second. You’re not sure Hawks would appreciate you showing him any kind of physical affection in front of his mom so you instead reach out with your quirk, giving his wrist a quick, hopefully reassuring squeeze. “Why don’t we take this upstairs, yeah? Hawks you can get that file you need and you two can talk with a little more privacy,” you suggest. The woman gives you an almost detached look but nods and Hawks sighs “yea sure,” before turning to go up the elevator.

The top floor is blissfully empty. You wish you could appreciate being in Endeavor’s agency a bit more but you’re more concerned for Keigo and the woman who is apparently his mother. She goes to take a seat at one of the desks and sits there quietly. “I’m sorry. I promised you a proper night out,” Keigo sighs and it breaks your heart a little seeing him like this. “It’s ok Kei, we can take a rain check,” you promise giving him a small smile before turning to leave and give him privacy. “Wait,” he says suddenly as he lurches forward to grab hold of your wrist. You turn back to look at him and find desperation so clear in his golden eyes.

“Stay?”

“Of course.”

He gives a relieved sigh before steeling himself and turning back to face his mother. “What do you need?” he asks, and the simple act of asking seems to be draining for him. “The commission money is running out. I didn’t know how to contact you so I waited until everyone had gone and came here. I figure being number two and all you could help me out?” she asks. “How much?” “Just enough to last me until I get a job.” “You’re not even looking for a job.” “I am.” “Stop lying.” “Fine then I just need enough to pay for food for awhile. You and the HPSC got me in that big, fancy house, the food is all I really need.” Hawks somehow doubts that’s true. “Fine, I’ll deposit some money into your account. Here’s my number too. Just call next time,” he tells her as one of his feathers unearths a business card from his desk and puts it on the desk she’s sitting at. For a moment she stares at the little card as if unable to register what it is, but eventually she does take it off the desk hesitantly, as if afraid it may disappear. “Thank you. Goodbye Keigo,” she says before standing and heading to the elevator. She’s about to walk out when she suddenly stops. “I am proud of you by the way,” she confesses but before Keigo can respond she steps into the elevator and then she’s gone. “I’m sorry you had to see that,” Keigo sighs. “Don’t apologize,” you assure him. “I ruined our evening. I think that warrants an apology,” he scoffs and you hate the self deprecating undertone you can hear in it. “Tell you what, why don’t you grab that file we need and then I’ll take you some place,” you offer. He gives you an odd look but nods all the same. You try to convince yourself this isn’t a horrible idea.

A cemetery. The place you had taken him was a cemetery. Hawks isn’t sure what to think but he can tell this isn’t necessarily easy for you as you lead him through the tombstones. You finally stop at a marker and sit down in front of it. Hawks joins you, eyes scanning your face before finally drifting to the tombstone. He freezes when he recognizes your last name at the top. There’s one name engraved below that, a woman’s, and Keigo finally puts the pieces together. “My dad was a big gambler,” you start to explain, “but he wasn’t very good at it. He was constantly betting big and losing it all. My mom would work long hours all day every day just trying to get food on the table and he would blow it all in a night or two. It wasn’t sustainable, obviously, so he started getting into shady shit to make up the extra funds. I guess eventually he screwed over the wrong person, they came to the house to settle the score so to speak but he was gone so my mom paid the price for him. I was on my way home from school at the time so, um, I ended up being the one to find her.” Keigo reaches over to gently take your hand but doesn’t say a word. He doesn’t need to. “My dad was arrested about a year or so after my debut as a hero, just when I was starting to gain momentum at All Might’s. The press ate that shit up, it was all over the news. I think that’s why they’re so hard on me now. They’re just waiting for me to prove I’m no better than the situation I grew up in,” you finish. “Maybe your dad and mine are sharing a cell,” Keigo offers and it’s far more than you ever expected from him. “That’s why your real name is a secret.” Keigo nods. “It was a deal my mother struck with the HPSC. She gave them me, they gave her a fuck ton of money and both of us a fresh start. The Takami name was wiped from both our records,” he explains. “How old were you?” “Six or seven.” “That’s hard.” “Yea.” The two of you briefly lapse back into silence before you finally clear your throat, forcing back any tears that were threatening to fall. “Anyway, I didn’t bring you here to tell you how shit my dad was. I, um, like to come here sometimes to talk to her. I figured it was only fair that you meet my mom since I met yours,” you explain, “if you’re comfortable with it, that is.” “I’d love to meet your mom,” Keigo says, giving your hand a tight squeeze. You respond with a watery smile before turning back to the tombstone. “Hey Mom. I know it’s been a minute since my last visit, work has been kinda crazy. Midoriya and Bakugo are doing well! I think Midoriya is going to propose soon and Bakugo finally got his act together with Kirishima. That’s Red Riot’s real name. I don’t remember if I told you that last time. Anyway, there’s someone here I want you to meet,” you say before turning expectantly to Keigo. “Hey Mrs. (y/l/n), it’s really great to meet you. I’m Keigo, your daughter’s new friend,” he introduces himself and it warms your heart to hear him do it with his real name and not his hero one. “You raised a pretty amazing woman ma’am. I hope you’re proud of her,” he finishes.

The two of you stay at the gravestone trading stories with each other and to your mom late into the night. There’s something freeing about it and when the two of you finally do take your leave, one thought sticks out to you amongst the rest: Against all odds, you’re in love with Keigo Takami.

Author’s Note: THIS CHAPTER WOW. First of all I really be hurtin my own damn feelings 🥲 but also as y’all can tell I very much was inspired by the backstory we got from the latest manga chapter. I’m sure the FBI agent monitoring me was very confused why I was googling what Japanese cemeteries look like but here we are. This is one of very few parts in this series that isn’t directly linked to a song off the album so it was a little harder to write but we finally got there
