I'm sincerely fascinated by everything related to long term nuclear waste storage warning systems. Like if they made merch I'd be SO hyped up about it.
Like if they made a funko pop like this:

hey guys, this is a post about side order and what we can somewhat gather about it so far. this'll be a long one, so hang tight. i've seen others vaguely talk about these ideas, so i decided to go all-out.
Tumblr media
this image is of what i'm going to refer to as the 'landscape of thorns,' which is a 'long-term nuclear waste warning message.' these being used to sway humanity from intruding on highly dangerous sites.
as certain kinds of radiation can stay toxic for thousands of years, a warning of the dangers of this plant were needed. non-linguistic messages were attempted at first by a report from the sandia national laboratories, one of the three development and research laboratories of the department of energy's national nuclear security administration. {DOE, NNSA} the aim of this series of messages were to warn later visitors to any waste site. they recommended that messages include each of the following, gradually increasing complexity.
{much more under the cut.}
"1} Rudimentary information: "Something man-made is here"
2} Cautionary information: "Something man-made is here and it is dangerous"
3} Basic information: Tells what, why, when, where, who, and how
4} Complex information: Highly detailed written records, tables, figures, graphs, maps and diagrams"
the issue with worded messages is that they're unlikely to be comprehensible in thousands of years. considering how much the english language has changed, and will continue to evolve, would those of the future be able to understand what is being said? because of this, symbols were also considered.. but another problem arises with that. no symbol will be universally understood to mean one thing, even something such as the jolly roger. {☠️} using it to warn for risk of sickness, or general harm would serve useless as time passes. especially nowadays, while the jolly rodger still is seen as a danger symbol somewhat, is used more commonly as a cool design thing.. at least in the USA. and again, that's the problem. no symbol is universally known for one thing, no matter what.
i believe it was also a thought to not warn at all, and just leave it there.. but that questions ethics.
eventually, physical markers were explored, giving ideas such as the forbidding blocks, rubble landscape, the landscape of thorns, and a few beyond those. these ideas carry similar characteristics to each other.
Tumblr media
from the official trailer.
in 1992-1993, a poll was issued by the zeitschrift für semiotik of tübingen germany, asking the following question:
"how would it be possible to inform our descendants for the next 10,000 years about the storage locations and dangers of radioactive waste?" and received answers such as artificial satellites, atomic priests, and 'ray cats.' i'm going to further talk about ray cats, as i think, considering the themes, it would be a good opportunity for side order to delve deeper into li'l judd, and his current whereabouts or motivations. as it's very vaguely hinted that he owns grizzco industries, and with that presumably dead fish in the trailer, it could be explored. i hope they won't make it weird though, as you know.. the whole thing with mammals has been a bit bizarre..
Tumblr media
anyway, it was suggested that a species of cat should be bred that changes colors when exposed to radiation, so essentially a living sign of nuclear threat. as things such as nursery rhymes have been culturally significant in some way for many, many years.. in 2014, the musician 'emperor x' was commissioned by the podcast '99% invisible' to create a song about this idea for an episode about long-term nuclear waste warning messages.
whatever this fucker is. they could be completely done with grizzco, but who knows.
{edit 8/23/23 i've been told it resembles the bake-kujira. the ghost whale which is accompanied by "weird birds or fish."}
giving us the song '10,000-Year Earworm to Discourage Settlement Near Nuclear Waste Repositories {Don't Change Color, Kitty.}' the gist of this track being "if the cat turns bright colors, run!" and was designed to be "so catchy and annoying that it might be handed down from generation to generation over a span of 10,000 years."
youtube
so, themes of radiation are very likely to be present. this brings us to our next section, the coral bleaching.
as you may know, healthy coral has beautifully bright colors. this is due to microscopic algae known as zooxanthellae, which lives inside of the algae's polyps. it is also a major source of food, and nutrients. coral bleaching occurs when coral reefs are under stressful conditions, a huge one being climate change, which i will get deeper into that specifically. if the waters it lives in heat up too much, the coral will begin to expel this zooxanthellae.. leaving it completely white, and exposing its bone-like structure.
Tumblr media
healthy vs partially bleached coral.
Tumblr media
while bleached coral isn't quite dead, the aftermath of said bleaching makes it much more susceptible to disease and malnourishment due to lack of nutrition. if the waters stay too warm for too long, or if the bleaching is too extreme, the coral will die.
Tumblr media
images from the official side order trailer, showing us bleached and possibly dead coral.
Tumblr media
coral bleaching is an ongoing issue, and efforts have been made to conserve and regrow the coral reefs.. this brings us to a shorter section, but one worthy of a mention.
coral cloning. coral cloning is a phenomenon where a small bit of a healthy coral is cut, and grows into a full piece. it helps when this, sometimes miniscule, piece is placed next to another. this speeds up growth almost rapidly. however, it is not too easy to grow, and this method isn't totally fool-proof. coral requires very certain conditions to flourish, such as not being placed on an open ocean floor, but instead in an already established habitat. also things like water temperature, pH levels, pollution, all can stunt growth. this is a very vast oversimplified explanation, but i believe you get the picture. have you wondered why i am bringing this up? here is why..
Tumblr media
am i saying this directly implies cloning? not exactly. it's an interesting thing to note, though, as you might know how octarians {NOT OCTOLINGS!} are born.. via severed tentacle. coral can sometimes be born via severed piece. i'm not going to go into this much more, as it's kind of an out-there comparison. do with that what you will.
continuing on with the radiation and infectious theme, i feel i should mention ultraviolet radiation. the sun produces these UV rays, of course, and they can be good in moderation. if it's too much? it can be absolutely killer. you guessed it, ultraviolet radiation does play a part in warmer waters, which aids in bleaching coral. however, that's not all.. the state of inkopolis square we see in the side order trailer could very well also be due to residue of nuclear radiation from the human society's many wars. before humanity's fall, natural disasters were more prevalent than ever, and we still don't really know what exactly happened besides the massive flood. the sea levels rising was the reason the great turf war, the deadliest war to strike inkadia, even happened. things like oil spills could possibly be going on too, as in some photos, you can see this black liquid.
i'm going to state the obvious and add on that oil spills are incredibly dangerous to marine life, and that includes coral reefs.
Tumblr media
remnants of human life have not disappeared from inkadia, or anywhere in this world dominated by marine life. it's not far-fetched to say they could still be affected by anything else left behind, climate wise.
the landscape of thorns has not been built, to my knowledge, but maybe it was here. this could be a rediscovered nuclear plant, who knows. especially as certain kinds of radiation, again, can stay hazardous for upwards of ten-thousand years, and possibly longer. you may have caught that ten-thousand is an important number for multiple reasons, especially with the possibility that this octoling is eight. the human race has been extinct for longer than ten-thousand years by this point, but it's something to remember. but there's still questions.. where do pearl and marina fall now? what is their role? is this an infection only targeting octolings, and other octarians? what's going on with marina? only time will tell, yeah?
there you have it, if you read this far.. definitely tell me what you think. i've still not covered everything in the trailer, so any add-ons would be cool if you have any. this took a while to research and write, so thanks for reading.

The main problem with nuclear energy in the Americas (at least) is the polluting of indigenous land.
The thing is that that's not unique to nuclear power. Obviously, fossil fuels involve it too, but so do renewables.
Switching to renewables would require a much greater amount of resource extraction than to nuclear. The massive amounts of structural materials required to build millions of solar panels and turbines, compared to a few nuclear power plants, is immense - and the further requirements for energy storage necessitated by the inconsistent power supply mean rare earth metal extraction for batteries, electronics, etc, which also need to be reduplicated across the myriad of power stations required. All power production requires some level of resource extraction. Of existing methods, nuclear requires the least.
Of functionally any metric, nuclear is the most efficient, purely because of the massive power output. For example, coal power actually produces more radioactive waste than nuclear fission, and that waste is pumped directly into the air. If it's waste we're talking about, then we should think about the massive piles of e-waste produced by renewables. Solar panels have a finite service life, and produce electronics waste that can be hazardous to the environment - and a lot of it, because you need millions of panels. Again, nuclear produces less radioactive waste than coal, but nuclear can maintain the scary reputation precisely because it's so efficient, because all the waste it produces is clearly visible, and concentrated in one location - which makes it incredibly easy to handle and store, but also makes it very easy to conceptualise.
Finally, the pollution of indigenous land is a political issue, not a technical one. As long as the colonial state exists, indigenous land will be destroyed, even if there were no electricity - as it was for years. Under indigenous self-governance, this political issue would not exist, and the question would be a technical one. I cannot speak for the indigenous people of the Americas, but on a purely technical level, in terms of the energy requirements of any people on Earth, nuclear power is the most effective option.

US politics: an analysis by this bozo right here.
Hello I'm Felix Warren and I've been reading Politico every day since early 2016 as the equivalent of how other people watch their "soaps." One of my chief goals in this weirdly obsessive reading habit was to see if I could understand what was going on enough to analyze it, and if not, how long it would take me to get to where I could do so. The test would be if I could predict where general trends in politics and related news would go. It's been like that for the past few years, actually--I've been able to anticipate a few things before they were reported over the past couple years in fact. So, this is my take on where things are going now that it's almost November 2023.
The big thing is, people worry a lot about where the Republican party is going. Republicans do as much as Democrats do. And this is because the Republican party has been having some internal problems for awhile, which became very visible once the Tea Party became a big thing. And I think what's going to happen eventually with the Republican party is either a split or a purge, where it becomes several parties that more accurately reflect their own members' beliefs. The Democratic party could also use a split but it's still able to come to compromises and agreements for the good of a strong majority, so I don't know if it's in danger of cracking in half in the same way.
In the short term, though, things are probably gonna coalesce around Trump until he has a downfall. The man can't live forever and he can't stay out of jail forever either. I know a lot of people get scared of his followers having some sort of uprising but I think his downfall is going to be a lot more boring than all that. His real flaw is that he's got a horrible paper trail and he's not able to instill loyalty in his many, many co-conspirators. When three lawyers flip on a person within as many days, it's a sign that that person isn't as powerful as they wish they were.
The biggest thing that's affecting global politics is that the status quo that was sort of invented after World War II is the only thing that we have keeping international "norms," and it's been wearing down significantly in the last decade. One big part of the equilibrium has been that several world powers, including the US, make a huge chunk of their GDP off of weapons sales for "defense" to their allied nations. A lot of people look for excuses to fly drones or fire rockets because then there's more to order for restock. I don't know how this winds down. It's not sustainable in terms of technology and in terms of resources, let alone lives. Nuclear technology is wrapped up in this, with a new fleet of submarines on order, and a new fleet of IBMs being requested--things we have no long-term plan for when it comes to storage of the waste and decommissioned items.
I feel that if we can ride out the next five years there's a chance that some technologies could come about that could dramatically change the status quo for the better. I don't think it'll be AI. AI is largely a buzzword and often a hoax--the ultimate mechanical turk.

God this Proximan site in the new "Among The Stars And Bones" season is really giving me "This is not a place of honor" vibes
The warning symbols, the large chambers, the clashing aesthetics and colours. It's possible there's multiple Proximan languages listed on the walls. It really reminds me of the different ways humans have thought to warn about long term nuclear waste storage sites. It's all warning signs trying to tell people to stay away.
Something is buried here that should not be unburied.
But of course, despite the misgivings of the human crew on this mission, something something war and capitalism

D&D dungeon crawl, but there's something strange about this dungeon. It's your typical dungeon crawl, stone bricks, endless winding corridors, traps, but there's no enemies. And it seems to go down for miles. The farther down you go the more hostile it appears, the bricks growing darker, the heat steadily rising. Turns out this isn't a dungeon at all, but a long term nuclear waste storage facility.

Periodic Table Championship: Round 6, Copper vs. Titanium
Four elements remain in the periodic table championship. Of those, we have the final two transition metals, copper and titanium, facing off here. Each element has won the five previous rounds to be here - let's recall what they're all about:
Copper is a soft, ductile transition metal that crystalizes in the face-centered cubic structure at room temperature, and one of the few non-silver metals. It can be easily found as the pure metal in nature, a factor that lead to its early use in human civilization. Copper is well known for its electrical conductivity, but is also used in currency, roofing and plumbing, and for its antibacterial properties, among other applications. Its name comes from cyprium, meaning from Cyprus, the island where it was primarily mined during Roman times.
Copper is primarily extracted from copper sulfides and is one of the seven metals of antiquity. It is considered to be an easily recyclable metals, capable of being recycled without any great loss in properties. Because of this, an estimated 80% of the copper ever mined is still in use today.
Titanium is a strong, ductile transition metal that crystalizes in the hexagonal crystal system at room temperature. It is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, and it also sometimes considered to be a refractory metal. Titanium is mainly used in alloying, included in both steel and aluminum alloys as well as its own, but the majority of titanium produced is in the form of titanium dioxide, for pigments and additives, among other applications. It was named for the Titans from Greek mythology.
Titanium, a common element, is involved in countless research avenues, including investigations into its biocompatiblity and often in oxide form. It has high corrosion resistance, enough so that it has been considered for the long term storage of nuclear waste; it is thought that such containers could last 100,000 years.

It sure is fascinating how people have just an absolute obsession with radioactive materials as a dangerous thing, when in practice, most that are encountered by civilians (and many that are not, such as depleted uranium munitions) are significantly less dangerous than many non-radioactive materials. (Well, the DU munitions only if they're not being fired at you of course, but that's more a kinetic energy thing.)
For example, there's compelling evidence that uranium-238 (the most common isotope thereof) doesn't actually measurably increase cancer risk without constant exposure to significant amounts as dust.
Here are some things that measurably increase your cancer risk:
Smoking any amount of anything per month
Drinking any amount of alcohol per week
Living within ten miles of a coal-powered plant (more if you're downwind and there's a strong prevailing wind direction, or if the water is improperly treated)
Working at a gas station
Working a night shift
Coffee
Frequently eating Burned Toast
A bunch of other stuff that gets considered (rightly) minor
Here are some things that don't measurably increase your cancer risk:
Drinking any amount of Nuclear Power Plant Wastewater.
Living near a nuclear power plant (active or inactive)
Living near the hypothetical fully filled in Long Term Storage thing in Nevada, Yucca Mountain Waste Repository (it has not yet been opened because Nevadans and other people don't understand just how little risk there is and oppose it.)
Taking a set of paperweights made out of U-238 and throwing them at your enemies, but them not going very far because uranium is very heavy and you are not particularly strong.
Sitting on a throne made of depleted uranium while looking down at your subjects on their pathetic, lesser chairs that are far less indestructible, once a day.
Anyway the point is people take nuclear waste and radioactivity far too seriously. Coal ash is far more dangerous, and we don't build huge underground storage facilities to store it so future people don't touch it, or come up with bizarre ideas like "we should build spikes and warnings, so future people don't come here" and it doesn't get less dangerous with time like nuclear waste does. Should we build a big coal ash bunker? Absolutely, I am in favor of any scenario where there's more huge underground bunkers and more people who know how to build them, so that I may someday fulfill my ambition of living in a huge underground bunker. But do people advocate for it? No, not really. They advocate for one for (generally safer) nuclear waste, and then don't even use it because people are too scared to let the waste be moved.
This, incidentally, is why I'm advocating the dumping of vast amounts of coal ash on the lawns of Nye County residents and everyone else who's tried to hold this great bunker project up. I'm sure we can find the coal ash for it, currently we just leave it wherever.
I suspect it's residual cold-war hysteria, a lot of anti-nuclear sentiment came out of there, and also the breathless reporting on the one nuclear power plant that actually killed anyone, instead of the multiple times that a hydroelectric dam broke and killed a bunch of people.
