Pegasus Masterpost
Here's a little guide to the main classes of pegasi in the Sky Cowboys world!
Sky Cowboys pegasi generally follow these "rules" -
They have beaks - most are similar to raptor or seabird beaks. Used for opening nuts and snapping up small prey. They do still graze on long-stalk grasses.
Coat colors stay within the equine range, but feathers can be any color.
They have horse-like brains and so are trainable similarly to horses.
They cannot speak like some birds can.
The standard flight range per day is 150 miles. It's called a "hop".
Broadwing Pegasi
These are the main workhorses of the world. They're hardy, agile, and tend to have solid temperaments. Most pilots fly these for all sorts of jobs and have been bred into many unique breeds.
Quick visual - Quarter horses or mustangs with eagle or kite wings.

Longwing Pegasi
Longwings have as much attitude as they do wing surface, but they make up for it with sheer endurance. These pegasi can stay aloft for weeks, diving into the sea for fish or ocean plants to eat.
Quick visual - Thoroughbreds or arabians with seabird wings.

Shortwing Pegasi
Calm and huggable, shortwings are the draft horses of the Sky Cowboys world. These are flightless pegasi (since their wings are so small), but are still very useful on the ground like for all sorts of things from riding to pulling wagons to working in farm fields.
Shortwings tend to have colorful/fancy plumage.
Quick visual - Percherons or clydesdales with songbird wings.

Scrapwings
These little guys are feral - no one has really domesticated them. Partly because they're difficult to work with and partially because no one really sees a point. They're all-around too small to be useful and tend to just get into stuff. At least they're cute!
Quick visual - Zebra/quagga or donkey with dodo wings.

And there you have it! What would your SC pegasus look like?
If you want to learn more about my pegasi, I have an art/lore book on Kickstarter! Also there's lots here on my blog, it's just not as organized :)

Longwing, coming in for a landing!
I had a request for a longwing, so here's a young Lily!
Longwings have the prettiest description of all the OG dragons, with dazzling, enormous wings and intimidating heads. I'd love to draw more with an emphasis on the face. I imagine that males have a much larger head crest than Lily does here: Excidium might be next.

Soo… hi and hello Temeraire fandom! I’ll begin my semi-epic comeback into my old hyperfixation with a quick redesign of my take on Longwings from 2019 :3
In the new version I decided to go a bit more into greenish hue of blue as I think it would suit them more than flat cyan-like color in the old design :DD

If I may ask, what class did you put Arabians into? Endurance capabilities, with maneuverability and speed. I can imagine that they probably wouldn't need massive wings, they're kinda the opposite of drafts, tiny bones, and aren't as thick
and also! Are there mini pegasus? All I can picture is a little shetland with wings lol
sorry to bother but I've been thinking about this concept even before I found ur blog and ur art is SO COOL
Hi! Thank you :)
I usually put Arabian horses in the longwing class. Their delicate bodies paired with long, long wings make them excelling long-haul and endurance pegasi.

And yes there are mini pegasi!

I was pretty sure I had more drawings of minis, but looks like I'll have to do more, including a shetland.

A longwing consultation (ft Lily, Excidium, and a tiny Roland and Harcount having tea)
I wanted to show my headcanon of male vs female dragons: like some birds, I always think of the males as smaller and flashier. The coloration differences are not meant as sexually dimorphic, but I'd imagine there's some flexibility in color within a breed.
Excidium here is shorter with a bigger crest, and also some cool scars. While he's not an old dragon, I tried to make him look more mature than Lily, who is very young in comparison. I tried to make his wings look more tiger-like than Lily's, too, just cause.
Thanks for reading!

Oh @temerairemybeloved you asked for a longwing low these many nights ago but alas, it was defeated me! Which is such a shame because I used to have such a good grasp on how they looked. I was trying though, here are my attempts however none are satisfactory to me
