They sit there, phone in hand, speaking to their beloved who is currently overseas. One's nightly routine and the other's afternoon. They compile the happenings of the day over phone-static service. Nonetheless, it's healing. It's lovely. It's needed.

"I'm almost finished with my book! Really excited to talk about it with you."

"mmn"

They're nodding off. Sweetness.

The one reading goes back to their book, enjoying the remainder of the afternoon and allowing the other their rest. It's almost time for their love to retire for the night, might as well enjoy their company before they finally turn in.

Moments go by, background noise from the phones prominent as they both sit there with each other in silence. The one reading continues to flip through their book, but pauses when they feel a tickle. It comes on so abruptly that they don't have time to mute themselves, so they lift their collar and subdue the sneeze into their sweater as best they can, failing to stifle.

"hi'tsshu!"

Soft, but with a felt intensity. Shit, I hope I didn't wake them, they think to themselves.

"excuse me," they whisper, sniffling lightly. Habit. They recover and go back to their book.

"essyou"

Their head shoots back up, worried they woke the other. Huh? What was that? Did they say something? Hell, did I wake them?

"Hm? I'm sorry love, what did you say? I couldn't hear you."

A moment, then a waking inhale.

"bless you" they say only a bit more clearly, head still rested on their arms.

Oh. Their face softens. Ahaha, my love. Nothing can wake them usually, aww.

"Thank you," they say with a soft chuckle. "I didn't mean to wake you."

"Mmn."

And they're out again.

An attentive ear to their love always, it seems. Even in the midst of sleep.
