About/Before Following/Rules

This blog is run by Kuixotic and is a sideblog-all interactions (likes, non-anon asks, etc) will come from this account

With the headcanons I’ve made revolving around ghost types, there will be a consistent focus on themes around death of which includes the process of dying, dying prematurely, the aftermath, thoughts on the afterlife, grieving, and so on. Such things can be heavy and hard for some, so feel no obligation to follow this blog. Keep yourself safe.

The main character that this story revolves around is a minor-behave accordingly

That said, the concept of child death will be present and is a central part to this blog

This blog is an alternate timeline of the world presented in @asktheisle , so there will be many references and possibly characters appearing from that blog in the background

That said, asktheisle is still the mod’s priority-there’s no set schedule for updates on this blog

This blog WILL have an ending, and in comparison is a much shorter story than the mod’s other blog

SOUL ENCOUNTER RUNDOWN:

The nature of this blog is to connect to others, and create bonds

Each ask counts as a new “soul” that has been met-the soul count goes up with new characters, so if you send multiple characters from one blog they will count as a new soul each time

That said, only one character/soul per ask. If you want to send more from the same blog, do them in separate asks

Prior interactions from older souls will not change the count-feel free to interact as much as you want :)

Due to being in the same verse as asktheisle-humans/trainers are very much welcomed to interact

No godmodding: As the story progresses there will be more info as to who the main character was in their past life-some might be able to tell right away. Trying to send asks to make that realization happen within story context just won’t fly.

- 15x15: This time when Dean sees Cas leaving the bunker, he stops him. (In reference to Cas saying “you didn’t stop me” when Dean got mad at him for leaving)

- 15x16: This is the the only version of Cas that rebelled for Dean. This universe is literally being saved repeatedly because of Cas’s love for Dean

- 15x18: CAS CONFESSES HIS LOVE TO DEAN then goes to mega hell for being gay

“I love you. I love all of you.” (Arguably to the group, but the first “I love you” can be seen as Dean-specific, especially since it cuts to Dean after being said.) (12x12)

This is said as Castiel is breaking away from Naomi’s mind control—mind control she fostered specifically by having Cas kill a thousand versions of Dean. This implies she knows that Cas’s strongest loyalty is to Dean, not Sam, or humans in general.

“The point is that they [Dean & Sam] were here at all and you got to know them, you -- When they're gone, it will hurt, but that hurt will remind you of how much you loved them.” (14x14)

“You know, Dean, he... he feels things more acutely than any human I've ever known.” (15x13)

Use of We vs. I

In the crypt scene in Season 8, Dean tells Cas, “We need you.” This is not enough to stop Cas’s actions. When the language switches to “I need you,” Cas drops the angel blade.

We can clearly see that Dean tries to put up barriers about how he really feels about Cas in his use of “We.” For example, after showing the audience many scenes of Dean, not Sam, frantically trying to call Cas, we get the following lines:

“So not only were you ditching us, but you were also ignoring us?”

“With everything that's going on, you can't just go dark like that. We didn't know what happened to you. We were worried. That's not okay.”

It’s clear that these “we’s” are really “I’s”

In the alternate future presented in 15x9, Sam asks Dean, “What’s happened to you Dean… ever since…?” to which Dean responds, “Ever since what? We lost pretty much everyone we’ve ever cared about? Ever since the Mark made Cas go crazy and I had to bury him in a Malak box… ever since then?” While he acknowledges Sam’s losses as well, his switch to “I” in reference to Cas implies that Cas’s loss belongs especially to him.

(Mostly) Verbal Parallels to Other Couples

In 1x01 (start at 2:27), Dean pulls Sam away from a dead Jess in a direct parallel to how Sam pulls Dean away from Cas in 12x23

Following Jessica’s death, Sam keeps seeing glimpses of her as he and Dean travel around in the Impala. Dean does the same in Season 8 following his return from Purgatory without Cas.

David from “Bloodlines” (9x20) tells his love interest, “I was there. Where were you?” which is the same thing Dean says to Cas in “The Man Who Would Be King” (6x20)

When asking Dean whether he’s in love with Cassie, Dean gives a similar response to what he will say in 10x5 when asked about Destiel.

Destiel is paralleled with their counterparts from the Supernatural play who are “a couple in real life” (10x5)

Cain compares himself to Dean in Season 10. He describes the significant kills of his life (The Knights of Hell, his wife Collette, and his brother Abel) and tells Dean that he will follow his same pattern by killing the King of Hell Crowley, Castiel, then Sam. It is also mentioned that all Collette asked of Cain was “to stop,” which is the same language Cas uses with Dean in 10x22.

Dean explains how his parents fell in love to prove his identity to Mary in 12x1, “He was cute and he knew the words to every Zeppelin song, so when he asked you for your number, you gave it to him, even though you knew your dad would be pissed.” Later in this same season (12x19), Dean gives Cas a homemade mixtape of his favorite Zeppelin songs.

Ishim fell in love with a human named Lily Sunder who ultimately left him for someone else. When trying to recruit Castiel, he compares Dean to her.

Dean questions how much of their life has been controlled by God. Cas states, “You asked, ‘What about all of this is real?’ We are.” (15x02) Later, they find out that God has been using Eileen to spy on the Winchesters. She says, “After what happened, I don’t know what’s real anymore.” Sam kisses her, stating “I know that was real.” (15x09)

A/N: My lovely anon, thank you so much for your patience! I had a hard time with this one, I must admit. I wanted to try and stay true to canon, but we know how hard that is for me lol. Either way, I hope you enjoy!

Leonard and Penny didn’t stay. In fact, after the mango stick rice issue, they dismissed themselves to their own apartment. There was nothing that they could do to help them after all. After spending all day cooped up at home, wallowing in self-pity, Amy and Sheldon didn’t have it in them to do much of anything.

Amy herself hardly slept the night before, and the way Sheldon tossed and turned told her that he didn’t sleep much either. She could understand why. This was supposed to be his breakthrough, the thing that gave him what he always wanted. The prize that he thought would define his success. The Nobel was what Sheldon had been striving for his entire life, Amy was not blind to that, but she had never seen him this let down by a setback before.

Sure, she was just as excited about the idea of super-asymmetry and the prospect of a Nobel, but she knew that it meant so much more to Sheldon. He’d dedicated years of his life to this research, and he finally cracked it at their wedding of all places. He was always so giddy when they made progress with the theory. It was devastating to watch his excitement deflate after learning their theory was no good.

Amy had to make Sheldon so much tea that day. He seemed so numb to everything, but maybe that was just exhaustion. He was also unusually quiet, cradling his mug and staring intently at the coffee table. Until their friend’s left, then his behavior changed. He fidgeted, and his blinking was rapid. And Amy wasn’t sure, but she thought she saw him wipe his face with his sleeve out of the corner of her eye.

“I’m gonna go lie down for a bit,” Sheldon told her suddenly, tapping her knee. He didn’t give a moment to respond and bolted off to the bedroom quickly.

Amy turned to watch him go. She debated whether or not to follow him. On the one hand, alone time might actually be helpful for him. Sheldon needed a lot more time to process than the average person. Even Amy herself had to find a way to come to terms with this “loss”. But on the other hand, Sheldon made impulsive decisions when he was by himself. More so when he was in distress. Perhaps she should simply check on him, make sure he was alright and then leave him be.

Ultimately, Amy decided to clean up a little before she said anything to him. The mess had to be driving him crazy, just as it was her. But that had to tell her something about Sheldon’s mental state… him not caring about the disorder in their apartment.

Amy knew she had the right to be upset herself, but she was worried about what this was doing to her husband more than anything. She saw the way his lip quivered the night before when she told him how he was really feeling. Amy stayed up with him into the early hours of the morning looking for any kind of solution. And when they didn’t find one, she saw the emptiness in his eyes. That scared her because she knew what that look meant. He was shutting down on her. Looking for a way to protect himself emotionally because science could no longer do that for him.

As Amy threw away the last of the empty food containers, she wondered what was waiting for her behind the bedroom door. There was no sound coming from that side of the apartment, and it was eerily quiet. She ran her fingers through her hair just as she stopped in front of the threshold. Amy listened once more for any kind of noise, but still, nothing came.

Without knocking, Amy slowly opened the door. The sight of her husband clutching her pillow, back turned, greeted her. His breath was uneven and broken, but his frame was as still as a statue.

“Sheldon?” Amy pried carefully. No response. “Are you ok? Do you need anything?”

He shook his head, rustling the pillow beneath him.

Hesitantly, Amy sat down on the sliver of the bed behind him. Tenderly, she rested her hand in the ever so slight dip of his hip. Sheldon flinched, but he did not push her away. “Talk to me,” Amy pleaded. “What’s going on?”

Sheldon nestled his head further into the pillow. “This was supposed to be my Nobel, Amy,” he said quietly.

“Oh, Sheldon, I know.”

Even from his side profile, Amy could see the tear escape his eye. “I thought this was my breakthrough. But like all of my other work, it’s never going to amount to anything.”

Amy gaped at his uncharacteristic insecurity. At least regarding his intelligence. Like everyone, Sheldon lacked confidence in some aspects of his life, but brainpower was never one of them. “Sheldon, that’s not true,” Amy tried, gently rubbing his side.

“Yes, it is!” Sheldon exclaimed, raising his voice. His body shook now, the barrier he had built around himself all day finally coming down. “I’m sorry I couldn’t figure this out for you, Amy. I’m sorry I wasn’t smart enough,” he sobbed.

Amy moved quickly, laying down behind him trying to wrap her arms protectively around him. His frame was much bigger than hers, yet, he became like a small child as his body curled in on itself. Resting her chin on his shoulder, she clutched him tightly, hoping it would calm him down. Amy could feel the tears running down his face as she nuzzled closer to him.

Eventually, Amy felt Sheldon grip onto her forearm that was lying across his chest. His uneven breathing had slowed. His face was dry and puffy now.

Amy squeezed him a little bit tighter. “I know how disappointed you are, Sheldon. I’m feeling the same way. But I love you no matter what. Remember that, ok?”

Sheldon didn’t nod. “But what if-“

“Shhh,” Amy stopped him. “Nobel or no Nobel, I will always love you.” She kissed his cheek softly, leaving him no room for argument.

Sheldon turned in her arms, the motion pushing her so she was now laying on her back. He leaned on one of his elbows, looking down on her. “I love you too.”

Amy reached out to cup his cheek. He immediately burrowed into her hand. “We’re going to figure this out. But not right now. I just want you to shut your mind off tonight, Sheldon. Rest.”

He nodded.

Amy had expected him to insist she move from his side of the bed, but instead, he simply fell down into her embrace again. Using her chest like a pillow and curling into her comforting warmth, Amy couldn’t say no to him. Sheldon was never one to willingly initiate cuddling often. The only time he did was after coitus. So, if he wanted to be held by her, to be the little spoon, then Amy would happily give in to his wishes.

Eventually, Sheldon fell asleep, but his brow remained furrowed, and his muscles still tense. Amy had calmed the storm for the night, but this was only the beginning. She knew Sheldon was going to take this hard and that the road ahead of them was bumpy. But they were married now, surely they could get through it together.

Amy just hoped they had enough tea to get them through it.

For these last seven days (hopefully) of TRUMPTRUMP I’m writing about the project. This is day 6, see the others at www.trumptrump.biz Today: How I did it and what is next,

The drawings would start with what was going on. Most of the time I would just do an online search for “Trump Administration” to see what they were up to. I’d find things in big newspapers, small newspapers, twitter feeds, trade magazines…If nothing turned up for the day that way there was always Trump’s twitter feed which never failed to be filled with horrors. I had two Google calendars for the project: “Trump” and “Trump Done” to keep track of days I might have missed.

Yes, there were days I missed and went back to once in awhile. The biggest gap was in August 2017 when the Unite the Right rally stomped all over Charlottesville where I live. I just couldn’t draw that week, but I went back later and filled in. Most days I would not plan them out but I did try (after the first few months) to have a continuity between days. I did some months as 4-panel comics. Sometimes I would plan them out in my sketchbooks, or draw from other artists’ work to steal things from them and use later.

Later in the project I would look back at past years to echo those drawings, especially at Christmas and New Years. Last fall the ones leading up to the election mirrored those in 2016, with, happily, different results.

For the first few months I drew on notecards, but once Trump took office I drew on vellum finish bristol board. I bought 12x9 in. pads of on sale and chopped the pages in half. I almost always drew in pencil using cheap mechanical pencil from Staples or wherever.

I also used a fancy .3 pencil and a few chunky graphite-holders too. The past few months I’ve also used the super-deluxe Palomino Blackwing. When I drew in ink I used a Pentel brush pen. Large black areas I filled in and any screentones were added digitally in Photoshop.

After drawing I would scan them grayscale at 600 dpi. I saved the scans, and after cropping, adjusting levels and doing a little clean up would save them with file names like 21-01-20.jpg to organize by date. I use Backblaze for off-site backup and Time Machine for local.

TRUMPTRUMP.biz is set up on tumblr. When this thing started in 2016 it was a good platform for quick sites and since I didn’t expect this to go on this long (he was supposed to LOSE) I figured it would be ok.

Tumblr has been fine but if I did this again I would set up a simple Wordpress of Drupal blog on my own space. I don’t like being at the mercy of tech bros and I plan to move TT over to my own space at some point.

I bought TRUMPTRUMP.biz as a domain which is still funny to me. .biz lol. After uploading I’d share on dedicated Facebook, instagram and twitter feeds. I’ve kept all three through the project but after it’s over I’ll be deleting Facebook at least.

Tomorrow the project is done, or rather almost done. As I had planned in 2016, for a week after he is gone I’ll draw beasts and monsters eating the goo he melted down into, pooping it out and maybe eating it again. Trump’s poison lingers.

After TRUMPTRUMP is done I’ll continue drawing LADYH8RS and USAH8RS (including all the congresspeople who voted for the coup). I’ll also draw more poetry comics and a new project, the opposite of TRUMPTRUMP, where I draw nice portraits of government workers who are helpers.

I also plan some print collections of TRUMPTRUMP, similar to the ones Retrofit made, but softcover and spanning whole years. Stay tuned.

I can’t believe this is almost over.

Snow Cake Recipe (From Scotland)

Ingredients

Short Crust Pastry

9 oz flour

6 oz butter, cold

2 oz sugar

1 egg yolk

(about 6 to 8 oz raspberry jam to cover the pastry)

Cake

150g (5 oz) good quality butter, unsalted and at room temperature (if you only have salted butter, omit the salt)

150g (5 oz) superfine or Baker’s sugar (caster sugar in the UK)

3 eggs, beaten

150g (5 oz) self-rising flour, or all purpose flour with 1 tsp baking powder, SIFTED

a pinch of salt

Topping

about 4 oz confectioner's/powdered sugar

a little milk or water

finely shredded, unsweetened coconut to sprinkle on top

Instructions

Oven temp 375˚F (190˚C) for pastry.

Make the Pastry Base

Using two knives of a pastry cutter, cut the butter finely into the sugar, but do not cream.

Add the egg yolk and stir to combine.

Add the flour. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until it has a breadcrumb texture.

Press the mixture into the bottom of a 9"x13" cake pan, pressing firmly.

Bake for about 10 minutes. Don't let it start to brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool, while making the cake batter.

Lower the oven temperature to 350° F (180°C)Make the Cake

In a stand mixer or using a handheld mixer, cream the butter and sugar until very light and fluffy. It will begin to pale in color, too.

Add about one third of the beaten eggs, and mix well at medium speed.

Then add about a third of the sifted flour. Repeat this step. Add the rest of the eggs and mix well, then turn the mixer to low and add the final flour and just mix until well combined.

Prepare to Cake for Baking

Spoon the jam evenly onto the pastry base taking care not to let it reach the side of the pan.

Place dollops of cake batter all over the jam to make it easier to spread. (Try not to let the jam get mixed into the batter.)

Spread the batter evenly all over the jam and pastry.

Pop the cake into the oven for approximately 30 minutes. Do not open the oven until you start to smell the cake and it looks well risen (through the glass). Gently insert a cake tester or skewer into the center of the cake to check that it's completely cooked before removing from the oven. Allow to cool completely in the pan.

Decorate the Snow Cake.

Run a knife around the cake, down to the pastry, then shake the pan. You should feel that the cake is loose in the pan before decorating it.

Put the confectioner's sugar in a bowl and slowly add the milk or water a little at a time (1/2 tsp) until a thick, but runny consistency is reached. Adjust with more sugar or liquid if you see the icing isn't spreading nicely. Cover the cake with this icing.

Before the icing begins to dry, sprinkle generously with finely shredded, unsweetened coconut.

Allow the icing to dry and set completely which will take a few hours. Once it's set, use a serrated knife to cut the cake into squares (cutting into 18 pieces is a good size). Alternatively, you can cut the Scottish Snow Cake into fingers or even diamond shapes. Keep covered at room temperature.

Coconut Tartlets (Scottish Coconut and Raspberry Jam Tarts)

Coconut tartlets, or coconut and raspberry jam tarts are a big thing in Scotland. To be honest, they’re usually just called coconut tarts. If you grew up in Scotland, you’d know and love these little coconut treats which are sold in many bakeries, or made by many Scottish grannies.

If you’re a coconut lover, add these little beauties to your baking list.

They may not look very special, but as you noticed above, there’s a little raspberry jam hidden inside that gives these coconut tarts a special touch

Ingredients

2 eggs

1/2 cup (4 oz) sugar

1/4 cup (2 oz) melted butter

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 1/4 cups (8 oz) unsweetened, shredded coconut

raspberry jam

24 unbaked tartlet shells

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375F (190C)

Beat the eggs. Then add the sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and coconut.

Place the unbaked tartlet shells in their tins on a baking sheet.

Put a little raspberry jam in the bottom of each shell. Fill about about 3/4 full with the coconut filling (they will rise).

Bake for about 20 to 25 minutes until top is lightly golden brown. When cool, remove from tins.

Scottish Snowballs | Recipe

Scottish Snowballs are a classic raspberry & coconut biscuit (cookie) treat from Scotland. I grew up with them and think it’s time they made an appearance here in the US, especially for the holidays!

You may have seen my Snow Cookies which are similar. They are made with raspberry jam sandwiched biscuits, have the same icing and just a bit of coconut, based on a classic Scottish snow cake. I just received a comment on the recipe yesterday from a reader named Amber who told me she won a very competitive cookie contest with my Snow Cookies! That now makes three contests that these cookies have won.

Romanian Lemon Cake (Snow White)

This lemon buttercream cake is one of my favorite Romanian cakes! I like lots of them, of course, but the Snow White cake has a special place in my heart.

Ingredients

Lemon buttercream:

150 g/ 5.3 oz/ ¾ cups sugar

2 tablespoons flour

2 tablespoons corn starch

350 ml/ 11.8 fl.oz/ 1 ½ cups milk

about 10 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice, to taste (Note 1)

200 g/ 7 oz/ ¾ cup + 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter, soft

icing sugar

Crust:

60 g/ 2.1 oz/ 1/3 cup sugar

2 eggs

100 g/ 3.5 oz/ 1/3 cup + 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter, soft

1 tablespoon baker's ammonia (Note 2)

3 tablespoons milk

300 g/ 10.6 oz/ 2 ½ cups flour

zest of 1 organic lemon

Instructions

Use a kitchen scale, it guarantees for best results.

The layered lemon cake with lemon buttercream should be made one day in advance, it needs to spend the night in the fridge in order to become really tender and develop the flavor.

Lemon buttercream:

Place the flour, starch, and sugar into a bowl and mix with so much of the measured milk to obtain a thick yet runny paste.

Place the remaining milk into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Slowly add the flour-sugar paste while whisking all the time. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil again, that will happen very quickly.

Let bubble for a few seconds while whisking, and remove from the heat. Transfer to a bowl and place a piece of cling film directly on top of the pudding to prevent it from getting skin and let it cool completely.

When cool add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and stir well. Taste after adding about 8 tablespoons and continue adding until it is as tart as you like it.

To make the buttercream, both butter and pudding have to have the same temperature, which is room temperature, otherwise, the buttercream might curdle.

In another bowl beat the butter until pale and fluffy. Slowly start adding the lemon pudding to the butter, one tablespoon at a time. Beat until incorporated.

Taste the buttercream again and add more lemon juice if you like it.

Cake layers:

While the pudding for the buttercream cools, make the cake layers.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius/ 360 degrees Fahrenheit.

Beat together the soft butter and the sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs and mix well.

Mix together the baker's ammonia and the milk and incorporate that into the egg mixture.

In another bowl mix together the flour and the grated lemon zest. Incorporate into the egg mixture. You will now have a rather oily looking dough that should not stick to your hands at all. You may add one tablespoon of extra flour if you feel it necessary, it depends on the size of your eggs if you need that extra tablespoon or not.

Roll and bake:

Divide the dough into four equal parts. Wrap the three dough balls that still have to wait in cling film to prevent them from drying out and set them aside in a cooler place, not the fridge but also not that close to the oven.

You will only need to butter the tin before you bake the first layer of crust.

Roll the first dough ball into a rough rectangle on a lightly floured surface, place it on the buttered baking tin, and roll again until the dough layer is as large as the baking tin: 32x22 cm/12x9 inches approximately (or similar size, it doesn't have to be so exact). And don't stress too much about having perfectly straight edges, you will cut those away before slicing and serving the cake.

Bake for about 10 minutes or until slightly golden around the edges. Take out of the oven and while holding one side of the tin with a gloved hand, run the blade of a long knife underneath the crust. Let it slide carefully and slowly onto a cooling rack.

Repeat with the remaining dough balls.

Keep in mind that the tin is now very hot, don't touch it when rolling the dough on top, and use gloves when you transfer it to the oven.

When the crust layers are baked, you can carefully staple them one on top of the other, they will not stick. Let them cool completely.

Assemble:

Divide the filling into three portions. Reserve the best looking crust for the top of the cake.

Place one crust on a serving plate and top it evenly with one portion of the buttercream.

Place the second crust layer on top, press gently then cover it with the second buttercream portion.

Repeat one more time.

Place the reserved crust layer on top, press gently again, and cover the cake with cling film.

Place in the fridge for several hours or better overnight.

Cut the rough edges (and eat them), then cut the cake into small rectangles. Dust with icing sugar shortly before serving.

Notes

I used about 10 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice for the buttercream, that would be the juice of 2-4 lemons, depending on their size. I like the buttercream to be really tart, that strong lemon flavor is the best thing, but you should start tasting after adding about 8 tablespoons and decide yourself if you want more or not.

Baker's ammonia or ammonium bicarbonate should not be confused with cleaning ammonia, which is poisonous.

Steps and tips for making lemon buttercream

Start with making that delicious lemon buttercream as the pudding will need time to get completely cool before you add the butter and the lemon juice.

To make the pudding, you will need some flour, cornstarch, sugar, and milk. The procedure is the same as when making a regular pudding. You mix the flour, cornstarch, and sugar with enough milk to obtain a thick yet pourable paste.

In the meantime, bring the remaining milk to a boil. Slowly start pouring in the flour mixture while whisking continuously to avoid the formation of clumps.

Let the pudding bubble for about 20 seconds while stirring, transfer to a bowl. Cover the pudding with a piece of cling film directly over the surface, this will prevent the pudding from forming a skin.

While the pudding is cooling, take the butter out of the refrigerator and let it come at room temperature.

It is very important that both the pudding and the butter have the same temperature (room temperature) when you start mixing them. Otherwise, the buttercream will curdle.

Also, make sure that you don’t taste the lemon buttercream while mixing it, the spit from your fingers will also cause the buttercream to curdle.

So, once the pudding and the butter have reached room temperature, beat the soft butter until pale and fluffy.

Mix the pudding with the freshly squeezed lemon juice. Start with about 8 tablespoons and add the remaining juice to taste. I always add all the 10 tablespoons, I love the buttercream to be really lemony.

Slowly start adding the pudding, one tablespoon at a time, to the butter while beating all the time. Mix well.

How to make the pastry layers?

This Romanian lemon cake consists of four layers of crust held together by the creamiest, most delicious lemon buttercream filling.

The idea of baking four layers of crust might sound difficult or time-consuming, but it is really not the case.

The dough is rather oily and that makes it really easy to roll and it only needs about 10 minutes in the oven, a total time of 40 minutes which is really more or less about the time you will need when baking a regular cake base as well.

You should make the cake layers while waiting for the pudding to cool. The cake layers will also need some time to cool, but not as long as the pudding.

Using baker’s ammonia

When first publishing the layered lemon cake recipe I used baking soda to make the crusts. I wasn’t bothered by the light baking soda after taste, but I had readers saying that the after taste was too domineering.

I suggested the use of baker’s ammonia, although I had never used that when making this particular layered lemon cake. But I knew for a fact that baker’s ammonia is very popular in Romania and that my aunt uses it a lot when making cakes.

What is baker’s ammonia?

The most important thing you have to know is that you should never mistake baker’s ammonia with cleaning ammonia. Cleaning ammonia is poisonous!!!

Baker’s ammonia or ammonium bicarbonate is what bakers used to take before the discovery of baking soda and baking powder. Those two quickly replaced the baker’s ammonia in baking due to one reason: baker’s ammonia stinks!! Really badly!

That is why it is best to use the baker’s ammonia for making “only low-moisture baked goods like crisp cookies and crackers that thoroughly dry out during baking, lest the ammonia linger”.

Once the cake layers are baked, there will absolutely no lingering smell anymore. Nothing at all! And most importantly there will also be no soapy-tasting after taste of baking soda or baking powder.

Bake and assemble

You will have to bake the four cake layers or cake crusts on the back of a baking tin. This is a very often used technique in Romania, there are lots of layered cakes being baked this way.

However, you can also bake the layers on a regular tray lined with baking paper, you just have to pay more attention, the layers should all have roughly the same size.

You will only need to butter the back of the tin before baking the first layer. When baking the following layers, make sure you use oven gloves as the tin will be extremely hot.

Roll the layers on a lightly floured surface in rectangles about the size of the tin. Transfer them to the back of the tin and roll or press the dough around to make it fit the back of the tin.

The edges do not have to be perfect, you will cut them away anyway before slicing the cake.

To remove the cake crust from the back of the tin, hold the tin firmly with a gloved hand and run a long knife underneath the cake layer. It works very easily, you will not have to worry about the crust getting stuck to the tin or breaking.

Place the ready baked cake layers on top of each other and let them cool completely. They will not stick to each other if stored this way.

Divide the lemon buttercream into 3 equal portions and cover 3 cake layers with the buttercream. Use the nicest looking layer to place on top of the cake.

Cover the cake with cling film, place in the fridge, and let it set overnight. The lemon buttercream cake needs time to become really tender and develop the flavor.

I also recommend using European style unsalted butter, it has a higher fat content and less water and it tastes better when making buttercream.

I used about 10 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice for the buttercream, that would be the juice of 2-4 lemons, depending on their size.

Here’s to another year! I forgot to add this yesterday but I was too busy burying my head in the metaphorical sand. I feel like I wrote some of my best and favorite work this year, and for those of you who read and left comments and kudos, I love you and appreciate all of your nice words! I know I suck at replying to comments, but I promise you, I love every single one of them.

This year hasn’t exactly been a good mental health year, but I got to travel the country like I always wanted and I got the medical test done that I wanted to do (and I’m still fighting the insurance company about.) All in all, I’m proud of myself and what I’ve written, and I’m hoping that while working on my book, I’ll continue to write more! I’m currently planning for a third installment of the Rooms to Let series, but beyond that is up to myself and you!
