When the end finally comes for the terrible yellow fever epidemic that swept through New Orleans in 1853, Cécile and Marie-Grace help put together la célébration of the end of the sad times and the return of normal life. The two girls get to work making paper flowers to decorate the theater and give to the audience!
For the happy occasion, I made this dress for ma fille précieuse Cécile, based on the book illustration! I spent a long time looking for the right fabric, until I finally found this green floral print at JoAnn Fabrics. For the smaller details (since I’m overflowing on fabric and notions), I tried to stick to using stuff that I already had in my sewing stash, including this green silk ribbon, lace trim, tiny buttons, and antique cherub charm that I used instead of what looks like a cameo brooch.
Cécile’s green dress actually makes only one appearance in her series, but it also shows up in some promo images. For the first illustration, the one that shows the majority of her dress, I think it was meant to be a half-page book illustration, but at some point the decision was made for the books to have only a few full-page illustrations instead.
This is one of my favorite of Cecile’s dresses, even with just a small glimpse of it. Unfortunately, like most of the clothes seen in her series, very few of them were actually produced by American Girl.

Oh hi there, it's been a minute!
Sooo NYCC panel happened, and Dragon Ball Magic/Daima is real!
Tumblr media
Under the read more for the links, images, and some of my thoughts, analysis, etc...
First, the name: Daima 大魔 can be translated as big magic, large sorcery, big magic trick...And that 魔 symbol should look familiar to you guys, because it's the same MA from Piccolo DAIMAo, from MA Jr., from MAkkankosappo, from MAsenko, and from MAjin (magic people/population). It's the same word used for magic, sorcery, witchcraft, and hocus pocus style stuff. So... with or without demon connotation, just supernatural magic stuff :p
Then the continuity. When does this happen? There's no DBS refs at all in it, so there's speculation about it happening before DBS (but after the Buu saga since the Buu events are the origin of the story it seems). However... Kibito and Shin are defused. Did they defuse because of the wish? Or is it happening sometime after they get defused in DBS (different versions depending on manga or anime).
We don't know. I would say: we don't care. "Canon" is a lie. Official content (games, anime, manga, movies, tv specials, one shots, promo material, etc..) tend to steal from each other and reuse whatever is interesting for the following stories. Content is recycled and reused and readapted to fit whatever narrative of the current story beat (or arc/saga if we're generous) and that's it.
Oh btw you can watch it online, since Toei put it out!
youtube
Anyway let's get back to the plot:
Tumblr media
Pretty sure these guys are Bibidi-Babidi related, and they hold a grudge against the gang because of the Buu situation (this is what they're watching).
They make a wish to make everyone young, and there's no transformations (!) so.. Goku has to use the PowerPole.
There's also a message from Toriyama himself, delivered by Iyoku:
Hello. I’m Akira Toriyama. I’m currently working on a new Dragon Ball. The Title is “Dragon Ball DAIMA”. Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. In order to fix things, they’ll head off to a new world! It’s a grand adventure with intense action in an unknown and mysterious world. Since Goku has to make up for his petite size, he uses his Nyoibo to fight, something not seen in a long time. I came up with the story and settings, as well as a lot of the designs. I’m actually putting a lot more into this than usual! Things will unfold that close in on the mysteries of the Dragon Ball world. Hope you enjoy these different-from-usual battles that are cute and powerful!! — AKIRA TORIYAMA
He's far more involved in this than he ever was in DBS, sooooo.. !! Who knows. It's going to be similar to his modern style though, like Dragon Quest or SandLand.
Everyone's designs look amazing!
Tumblr media
Look at Trunks and Goten! They will never age, they get CTRL-Z lol Same for Marron actually, she got back to being her Buu saga toddler self :o (note how Trunks is back at being purple, and not Blunks anymore...)
Anywaaaay!
The animation looks STUNNING. However! Goku's hair looks very stiff :(
Other than that, the series started production right when Dragon Quest Dai ended: that's what the animators are transitioning from.
And some new and old names!!
Tumblr media
https://x.com/ag_sanda1/status/1712564193344311549?s=20
Nakatsuru at the character design and corrections, Aya Komaki and Yoshitaka Yashima in the direction roles. Art direction is Takahashi Kurahashi (big background artist, did Yo SonGoku a while ago), and some GOATED names for the animation: Chikashi Kubota, Naohiro Shintani, Yuya Takahashi, Takeo Ide, and Miyako Tsuji. Kubota is the guy who did the 2D section of the intro for DBSSH btw. Kubota My beloved.
Anime AJAY did a whole thread about the production info he has so go check it out.
Kid versions of everyone look super cute, but there was no Gohan on sight. It has to take place "after the Buu saga", but considering the designs, I do think this is kinda meant to be before Pan and Bra were born.
Also I smell Demon lore.
Tumblr media
Much interest on my end because it looks amazing even if it's not the serious type of story I usually enjoy. But it looks so good!
Also yeah, DBS Broly and DBSSH is "let's reuse the OG Broly Trilogy", so this is let's reuse/repurpose GT?
Prolly.

Worth more than Julez [e.k] - 2
last part
Last night was a blur. It was quarter until eight and Julez had one last meeting to attend. Usually before their flights to different countries, models had to listen to the restrictions implemented in country to avoid any dilemmas.
Margie, Julez’ manager and agent, would be flying with her on Thursday. This was it. Julez was stepping into a new direction in her career and this was big. The Spanish theme of the year was bridal. She’d dreamt about this moment and it would finally be here in just four days.
Realization of her fall seemed to come back to Julez. She noticed the minor purple bruise on the back of her arm when she looked into the full body mirror. It wouldn’t interfere with the show and for that Julez was grateful. She couldn’t even remember why she was so worked up to begin with.
However, she did remember that fine gentleman that helped her. She remembered that fitted white shirt hugging his biceps and how his large hands felt on her waist when he helped her into the apartment. He helped her walk from the elevator to her bedroom and he didn’t linger. He didn’t expect a thank you. Matter of factly, as Julez thought about it, he didn’t even leave his name.
That made Julez frown.
She yearned for more. He looked like exactly what she needed. He was the direct opposite of Devin and that’s what she liked the most.
It wasn’t long before Julez found herself in a freshly ran bath. She needed to relax her body from any tension that tried to build up. But she couldn’t stop replaying that man’s voice in her head.
“You good ma?”
Julez bit her lip and lowered the tips of fingers to her brown heat. Initially she was just rubbing small circles to the thought, but images of the basketball shorts and fitted shirt he was wearing covered her mind. She was able to paint a picture of just how thick his dick probably would be.
Oou, she bet it was pretty too. She’d love to kiss the tip of a pretty dick. Her lips, although just not meant for giving fire head, was one her staples. Everyone loved Cara’s eyebrows, Julez’ lips were so finely lined on her face naturally, her biggest controversy was proving that they were natural.
She bet he’d love her lips too. Although she was submerged in the bathtub, Julez could still feel herself grow wetter. She moved those two fingers from her inner bikini line to the sides of her clit. Each finger sat on each side of her clit providing instant pressure. She started to softly rub the already inflamed bud and moaned out in pleasure. This was one of the luxuries of having an apartment on the highest floor. She bit her lip and used her free arm to harshly grab her left breast. She had the most sensitive nipples and began to flick them on her own.
She promised that she wasn’t easy, but if that man was to walk in this room right now, she would bend over without a word. He had something that Devin didn’t possess naturally, dominance. He had it radiating from him, that’s something that can’t be taught. Oou Julez just knew that he had women flocking to him.
So here she was; fucking her fingers to the thought of a stranger in gold-rimmed, clear glasses.
-
The meeting went by exhaustingly slow, Julez thought. The rules didn't seem very complicated in Barcelona, and models didn't have nearly as much free time as these presentation slides indicated. Models were to assume their positions at selected promo locations, attend the fashion show, and fly home. It didn't get simpler than that.
Her friend and fellow model, Natalie, would’ve been on her same flight but has conveniently gotten food poisoning. Jules wondered what Natalie's measurements came out to. What were the odds that a model that has been featured in several magazines and music videos isn't in the lineup for one of the biggest fashion shows?
As the meeting concluded, groups of individuals began to disperse. Julez usually didn't mind being alone, but as everyone began to talk to their designated friends, it would've been nice to have Natalie on her side. Times were definitely changing because in what world does a 5'10 blonde, green eyed, Irish model have a hard time getting booked? She was practically begged for by every swimsuit company.
Although the thoughts were completely valid, Julez had to push these aside to mentally prepare for this weekend. There was nothing that could possibly go wrong.
When she arrived at her apartment she instinctively looked towards the greeting desk, that is where she believed the mystery man was standing, from the greeting desk anyone can see straight into the walk-in gym inside the building. The glass stood so seamless, Julez has almost walked into it so anyone delivering food or checking into the desk can see straight into the gym.
She made a small nod towards the directions of security guards to quietly acknowledge their aid on the previous night, but kept going to the direction of the elevator. The highest floor on the building, modeling money definitely did eventually pay off. She couldn't believe her father told her that her looks wouldn't get her far in life, but she chose never to address those feelings. Half of the time he couldn't tell the difference between two and twelve because he would be so crossfaded from the abundance of various substances he'd grown love more than his own children.
His opinion simply didn't matter.
Only Mia’s did.
Only Mia’s did.
-
The flight was seamless. Julez had grown used to flying after booking many little gigs all across the nation. International flights did make her a little more anxious, but Margie was there the entire time. Even if they didn’t speak too much, the other girls from the agency flying with her did provide some sort of security; familiarity.
If there was one thing that Julez yearned for, it was security. The ability to know that someone just has your back, that they won’t have you looking stupid. Oh well.
Julez smiled from ear to ear when she entered her hotel room. The view from the window was stunning and the faint smell of vanilla just made the experience just as beautiful.
There were fresh flowers laying on the nightstand with a handwritten card:
Felicidades preciosa, que tengas un espectáculo increíble y bienvenida a Barcelona.
Congratulations beautiful, have an amazing show & welcome to Barcelona.
After taking a quick picture with the card and flowers for her Instagram stories, Julez began to unpack her essentials. Toiletries, bonnet, charger, vitamins, and a couple other things could be seen on the nightstand next to Julez’ bed.
She’d have a little alone time before Margie would come in to prepare her for the big day. Tomorrow was press day then the big day would finally be here. Stripping down to her undergarments, Julez wondered if her body would do her justice.
Would her waist appear small enough? Would her face be chiseled enough? Would she be enough?
Pushing the thoughts aside, she’d go to look at the room service menu, as she hadn’t ate all day. Though the food native to the city sounded great, every model in the building knew better. She decided on a grilled cheese sandwich and fresh fruit.
Natalie crossed her mind again. She wondered if she was really sick or was she cut from the show. Would she be next to be cut? If Natalie was being pushed out by the agency then she felt like it would only be a matter of time before they re-examine her worth.
She knew that she shouldn’t dread on the unthinkable, but that was life.

Her poems have appeared in Spoon River Poetry Review (Editor’s Prize), Mid-American Review, Connecticut River Review, Phoebe Journal, Halcyone Magazine, The Ekphrastic Review, Ellipsis and other journals. Her chapbook This Slanted Scene was a finalist for The Poetry Box award in 2019. She has received nominations for the Pushcart Prize and for Best of the Net. She received her MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and was the first Poet Laureate of Swampscott, MA. She finds inspiration in the Vermont countryside, in art and in travel.
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR COMPLETING THE ARC by Nancy Hewitt
W.H. Auden says poetry is “a clear expression of mixed feelings,” and that’s one of the gifts in this compelling book of poems. Nancy Hewitt traces the movement from the constrictions of a 1950’s childhood, content to draw within the lines, to an adult freedom in which she can say, “I use language to open the skies.” The speaker does not shy away from trouble, but traces the complex entanglements of family narrative with insight and compassion. Art and travel become ways the world opens up for this speaker, as when she visits the Guggenheim and learns “the fine art of looking out and up.” Indeed, she looks and sees with remarkable clarity. There’s a fine tension here between the need for measure and the longing for abundance, and amazingly these poems give us both through their shapely forms and vivid moments of transport. Hewitt is a poet of rich vision and intelligence, and this is a beautiful book.
–Betsy Sholl, author of House of Sparrows
Nancy Hewitt’s beautifully crafted chapbook begins in childhood and ends in wisdom. Visual art provides a frequent counterpoint to the harsh realities the poet remembers and, in the wider world, observes. Most centrally “there’s the light offered up by words,” which fill the poems with vivid images and narratives that will linger long in the reader’s mind.
–Martha Collins
“No ideas but in things.” Nancy Hewitt proves the point of that William Carlos Williams line in her new collection. Here are poems about a trailer park childhood where her parents’ volatile marriage is on display. Here, many inventive prose and ekphrastic poems. Here, landscape poems of Barcelona and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, awash in oh, so much color and light, “the light offered up by words,” as Hewitt says in her title poem. Her words, that light—here now for you.

Remember how they dropped the news about Toe? Talk about the set up for reputation—but I also see why hets believe in it so much—but the explain the contradictions.
🤔
https://slaylebrity.com/images/taylor-swift-is-dating-british-actor-tom-alwyn/
Taylor Swift has found herself a new British beau. (Sorry, Tom Hiddleston.) The singer has been secretly dating actor Joe Alwyn, according to reports from People and The Sun.
Swift, 27, and Alwyn, 26, have reportedly been seeing each other for months, The Sun reports. Apparently, she’s even made a few secret visits to London to see him, disguises and all. An anonymous source assured the paper that the couple’s newly-discovered romance is “the real deal” and “very serious.”
A “close friend” with the pair concurred, telling the site: “This isn’t a new couple alert or a secret relationship—the only people this has been a secret to is the media because all of us, Taylor and Joe’s closest friends and their families, were aware they have been together for several months and have known each other for a long time.
"I don't want to keep secrets just to keep you and I." 🤔
"Snuck in throughtl the garden gate every night that summer just to seal my fate."
"You love is a secret I'm hoping dreaming dying to keep."
"That's thing about illicit affairs and clandestine meetings and stolen stares."
"What would he do if he found us out?"
I would die for you in secret.
“After her 1989 tour and all the attention Taylor received, she learned she had to be more protective of her personal life and she and Joe decided early on to keep their private life private,” the friend added.
MA documentary language anyone?
Keep him private, but then she brings him into the public right before promo starts for reputation. She's smart. I give her that. The planned worked perfectly. The set up does make them seem real on paper—they just look like siblings forced to hold hands when in public.
Not my business—maybe it's just how they are. "He's just shy."
It's the calculations, for me. 😏
Taylor made sure she had a plan A to Z for the blowing of all the winds.
..and as much chemistry as a potato

Spoilers Ahead!
Looks like this is just going to be a rambling series of thoughts I had while watching the pilot. Enjoy?
There's not a lot of Jeph Loeb comics I really like, but I really like Superman: For All Seasons. So, you know, kicking off your new series with a reference to what is probably the best moment from that comic, wrapped up in references to the Fleischer cartoons and an Action Comics #1 homage is a pretty sure-fire way to get me on-board.
Tumblr media
That the next bit is an extended reference to the best Superman movie, Superman III, really kind of seals the deal. It's a fitting reference, since both this and that movie are about Clark returning to Smallville as an adult and reconnecting with Lana Lang.
It's refreshing, after so many years of gruff General Sam Lane growing increasingly hateful and distrustful toward Superman, to have a version of that character who accepts all the facets of his son-in-law. We see later on that the friction in the relationship has shifted to Lois, which is another interesting dynamic.
The casting of Emmanuelle Chriqui as Lana, eschewing the characters usual ginger look, feels like an intentional attempt to echo the Kristen Kreuk version of the character. I wonder how long it'll be before we have some Smallville guest stars. I can imagine at least one of the principal cast who won't show up.
Lana's husband, Erik Valdez's Kyle Cushing, similarly evokes Smallville's Whitney Fordman and Superman III's Brad. Lana Lang has been a lot of different things in her 71 years of existence, but one constant seems to be her terrible luck in romance.
Speaking of Smallville, it sure is nice to see teenagers played by actual teenagers.
I dig the super-vision effect, like Superman is sweeping through the spectrum. I hope they kind of stick with that instead of going to a more classic x-ray image.
The Kryptonian ship design feels a lot more Snyderverse than Arrowverse. The color scheme evokes the monochromatic Smallville ship (though looking at pictures, I guess Kara's pod wasn't exactly colorful), and has the weird nanotech vibe that the tech in Man of Steel had.
The ominous bass note when Clark takes his glasses off is good, but it's better that the kids clearly aren't buying it until he does a Superman thing. It would be nice to see Hoechlin make Superman and Clark more distinct, but he also hasn't had a lot of chance to do so yet.
The speed-slow effect of Superman flying through the wall toward the villain seems calculated—along with the muted color palette of the Superman scenes, seems designed to appeal to fans of the DCEU. I wonder how well that worked.
I like that the heat vision is red in this. Like, I thought it was really neat that they did the blue effect for Supergirl, but I always hoped when they brought Superman into the show, they'd make his heat vision red to make the two more distinct. It would also subtly indicate that Supergirl's heat vision is hotter.
The Morgan Edge plot is a good hook to keep Lois in the forefront, and to explore some political issues the way Supergirl does, but obviously the politics of rural America are a little different from the politics in National City.
The bit about Ma Kent being the Superwoman of Smallville is nice. If we're to buy Superman as an inspirational character, it helps to have people inspired by him in the story.
I hope the inclusion of an alternate-universe Luthor doesn't mean we've seen the last of Jon Cryer's version of the character. I get the impression that Superman & Lois is going for a Black Lightning/Batwoman vibe, spending the first season more or less on its own to find its footing before it builds ties back to the larger Arrowverse. At least, I hope that's the case; it would be a shame for this series to reach its finale without ever bringing Melissa Benoist in for a guest spot.
The kids won me over by the end, though I hope there ends up being more to the premise than "one has powers, the other doesn't." Although that is a helluva Silver Age Imaginary Story plot to build a modern series on. The only way this could be more Silver Age is if it were Superman & ???? and Bitsie Tulloch was just constantly in silhouette.
Overall, I'm optimistic. The featurette that followed the pilot (which featured some people who...maybe weren't the best idea to put in promo materials right now) mentioned Smallville shortly before calling this a show about Superman when he grows up, and I think that's really the appeal. We've had a show about Superman in his prime, we've had a show about Superman starting out in life, and we've had two shows about Superman before he was Superman, but we've never seen something like this in an adaptation before (though I suppose Superman Returns came close). I can imagine some ways that this could break very badly—a Brightburn-style plot with Jordan, romantic tension between Clark and Lana, sidelining Lois, and of course all the behind-the-scenes issues I mentioned last time—but I think the building blocks are here for a really interesting series that does a good job exploring the Superman mythos in a way we haven't seen before. And I think, like pretty much all the CW shows, it's got the cast to pull it off. I'm very excited to see where this goes from here.

2019
In my last yearly round-up, the goals for the end of 2019 were to have done:
365 drawings (1 a day of place and thought)
52 what I saws
12 reflective writing pieces
12 reasons to be cheerful
12 photographs of tattooed fruit
6 posters
6 punks
6 tattooed people
6 painted objects
6 zines
4 pieces of clothing
A piece of work printed/made
Learn stick and poke
Stall at an art fair
It’s obvious to say, that I didn’t complete all of my resolutions. There were tasks that I started and then fell through – like the 52 what I saw’s, then there were other tasked that changed throughout the year. Looking at these goals again I think my approach for the coming year will be slightly different. Fewer goals, bigger goals with more actions that can be divided throughout the year. Hopefully, after writing this I’ll have a clearer idea of what they’ll be so I’ll come back that at the end.
Tumblr media
The work I’ve created this year feels a lot more together than the 2018’s body of work. I’ve found comfort in the barrel pen and the application of a colour palette which helps give the work a sense of togetherness. While in 2020 I hope to expand my processes a bit more this year has been good to build confidence and find the fun in what I’m doing again. The goal of making my work and Instagram page look more varied (as previously it was lumps of the same work) I think has been successful. It has been achieved through daily drawings of whatever pops into my head at lunchtime to then be drawn up and coloured at the weekends. This way of working has suited me well as it gives me something to do at lunch and thinking of 1 thing a day is manageable into my routine... the downfall of it would be that it doesn’t give much room for larger ideas or projects – knowing this now, I hope to set some time aside on weekends to plan those out and then I could use the lunchtimes to progress them.
My way of working is still fairly analogue as all the lines are drawn by hand, scanned and then will be digitally coloured. If I were to get an iPad the processing time would go down but I don’t feel there is a need for that yet as everything I’m doing it on my own time and it’s a process I’m comfortable with that ensures my hand stays in the game.
Tumblr media
In 2018 I was focussed much more on observational drawing, this year I have come away from that and started to play around with things a bit more. Using ideas and objects and trying to focus on fun. There have been a few recurring pieces that I would like to continue in 2020, Reasons to be cheerful was started in 2019 and while the ones that have been created could do with a bit of freshening up I can redraw and update those while continuing it as eventually I’d like to make it into a book/poem of some kind so that it is in keeping with the original song. The half heads are also interesting to me to play with, stemming from this philosophy that the mind and body are separate yet connected – opening up the brain allows for better communication of what that person is feeling. I’m not sure what the half heads will lead to in terms of the outcome.. but it’s a nice outlet for me to communicate feelings.
Tumblr media
The platform that I am using is starting to increase which is starting to give me a better understanding of who my audience is. Before my nephew was born I was reluctant to do child-focused things but my view on that has changed a lot seeing how he interacts with pictures and toys. For a few months in the latter part of the year, I was seeing my work as being in the soft middle of nothing as it isn’t too much one thing or much the other. With that in mind, I started to make things with soft middles. Felt soft toys that are just like physical drawings, making them takes longer than drawing does but it’s nice to have something physical at the end of it. It’s something that is still quite new to me so there’s an excitement there. Because of the material and general look of the bright coloured soft and squishy objects, they lend themselves to children. When drawing the ideas of what to make I made sure that it was things that interest me rather than trying to use the toys to make only baby stuff, this has also helped keep my interest. A goal for this year is to make stuff so that I can go to stalls – having a face on contact with people will give me a much better idea of who my audience is and meet other creative people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d say that the most successful aspects of my work this year is the progression of my visual toolkit, I’ve found my eyes and my nose and my colours. Things that I’m able to apply to any drawing I do. This has been helpful and I’m hoping it will continue to progress and change as currently when I ditch the nose it looks quite kawaii which isn’t quite what I’d hoped for but with more practice, I’ll find an alternative. This year I need to focus some effort on creating body shapes as many of my drawings with people in are just headshots other than body’s that were observed. I think that’s because when drawing the half heads, I draw them naked. I can do full body monkeys and skeletons and, I’m sure, with the addition of clothes I’ll be able to do people – I just need to put some effort into making sure it happens.
On the flip side of that, my least successful aspect would be refinement and placement. Throughout the year I’ve just been drawing one thing then moving on to the next with no real thinking of what I could use this for, where could I put this.. how can I push it? I think 2020 will see some refining of existing work as now it’s been drawn and I’ve had time away from it I can think and see it differently. I’d like to make some of the things already created into gifs, prints etc. so that they’re not just stuck as they currently are.
Other than a handful of projects, most of my work didn’t involve research into an area or subject – which has led the pieces to be seen at face value, most of them aren’t trying to communicate anything deeper which when looking back over the body of work makes it feel a little light. Not by any means does this mean that my work suddenly has to become all serious or obvious – but I think I could benefit from taking more interest in the news, short stories etc. to attempt to convey messages, tales and ideas rather than just images.
Overall, I think this past year has been a good step in the right direction that I hope to continue taking forward. I’ve played around with stick + poke; made a group exhibition;  redesigned my website and opened up more social media channels; made work for other people; designed an alphabet and learnt to sew (to pick my favourite few). Through focusing on drawing happier things I have also held a happier state of mind – I think both things feed into each other. While I’m not where I want to be yet (and I don’t know what that is) I’m positive that by carrying on I’ll get somewhere. My confidence in the drawing is getting better but now I think I need to focus my efforts on application and ideas of the drawings.
Tumblr media
In 2020, my main aims are to work towards (and hopefully do) a stall in either Bristol or London along with creating a self-promotion pack to send out to possible prospective clients. I have loosely planned my year with the main recurring projects that I would like to achieve this year, it looks slightly barer than the previous year but having fewer objectives means I can spend more time on them to make it the best version possible. I will be continuing with creating image ideas at lunchtime and working towards a bigger goal in the evenings. There is a possibility of my full-time job ending mid-year so what I’ve set out to do may suffer during deciding whether to do an MA or looking for another job... but none the less, these are my goals for 2020:
Make 24 Felt toys
Make 12 Editorial response drawings
Make 12 Zines
Make 12 Reasons to be cheerful
Make 12 Cards
Read 12 comics
Take 10 Polaroids a month
Write 12 reflection pieces
Design and distribute the self-promo pack
Stall at an art fair

Chuck will be more of an absent protagonist in the 1st half of the season (but he in in ep 4)
At the beginning of the season Dean and Cas will still have a rift. They will reconcile “at some point”. Jensen claims as of script 4 they still have friction. This has been repeated several times, from Misha as well. He indicated Dean is still mad at Cas, but Cas doesn’t feel to blame for Mary’s death.
General season 15 promo- more of a retrospective: https://youtu.be/_hlkNQL5Ecg
Season 15 promo: https://youtu.be/V232RpcCdTY
According to Dabb, Sam and Dean are going to start to lose people who, in past seasons, we would’ve never lost — and lose them in a very real way. Our guys are going to realize there’s a certain finality, and some of the things they’ve relied on to get through the day — people, talents, things like that — they are no longer going to be able to roll out. And that’s going to throw them for a loop
The shaving promo, punting things promo shows glimpses or Lucifer!Sam and MOC!Dean, as well as bearded Dean in tactical equipment. Recent interviews by Dabb seem to indicate that these are glimpses into other universes, a la Apocalypse World, and other endings from Sam and Dean.
According to the MarySue and other interviews, Sam’s bullet hole will give him a connection and insight to god- like a tin can telephone string.

Title: Back and to the Future
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: Picking up where we left off last season, Sam, Dean and Castiel are left to defend the world after all the souls in hell have been released and are back on Earth and free to kill again.
Written by: Dabb
Director: Showwalter
Filming Dates:  7/30-8/9 (no filming 8/5 for Canadian holiday)
Airdate: Oct 10

Promo: (for at least ep one and two) ttps://youtu.be/V232RpcCdTY
Sneak Peak:
Castiel? Yes Jack ? yes
Guest stars:
Other Spoilers/info:
The first episode will start right where the previous left off
Misha posed with the John Wayne Gacy clown
Jensen posted a series of pics- one clean shaven, one vid of him shaving, and one where he    appeared to be in character with blood and dirt on his face and in Dean plaid, but with his beard… confusing- some time jump theories are developing for ep 4.
Jensen was photoed filming (wearing an FBI jacket)outside with Alex
Misha and Jared filmed outside with a woman and young girl. They were running from the clown guy and a few other zombie looking creatures. CAS WAS NAKED (haha just no trench) and holding a shotgun. It could have been rehearsal and there was no camera in the clip shared by a fan which might explain the coat? Another fan said it was hot and Misha kept taking the coat off, so I’m sure this just a piece of rehearsal footage.
Alex was filming in white sunglasses. Other set photos indicate he had makeup on his eyes making them look burnt out. There is some spec that Jack will come back blind.
Misha posted a pic of the 4 of them in the impala
According to Variety, the boys will escape the zombies in a temp shelter. They are working together, but Cas feel “detached.” Misha seems to indicate that Cas feels unfairly blamed in Mary’s death and is deeply upset about Jack.
According to TVGuide, after they fight past the zombies, they end up in a mausoleum. They end up making a “deal with the devil” to get out. This is particularly upsetting to Cas.
Posing as FBI agents, the boys seal off the town as a gas leak to contain the monsters temporarily.
Dean’s time in hell is brought up
Jack’s body is being used by an entity that will help the boys get out of the zombie situation.
Episode 15x02
Title: Raising Hell

Robert Singer directed the episode written by Brad Buckner & Eugenie Ross-Leming (#1503). Original airdate 10/17/2019.

Sneak Peak:
Castiel? YES Jack ? YES
Guest stars: Ruth Connell, David Haydn-Jones, Rob Benedict, Osric Cho, Emily Swallow (?)
Other Spoilers/info :
A set was a high school set up to be a shelter.
Kevin, Chuck, Ketch and Rowena will be in this. Maybe Amara too. Emily Swallow was in town for only a short time, so I imagine it would just be a scene or two
Ghosts/zombies were seen on set. There will be a scene with Rowena attacking them that includes at least Dean and Cas.
There will be one longer scene in a park.
Alex was in sunglasses again - now we know as Bel
Ruth posted two vids of Misha claiming that he had filmed several scenes, but had no dialog - over three days so it must be a scripted reason(A spell? Chuck? Is he giving Dean the silent treatment?)
Ruth posted a video with her trailer, but the video showed Alex’s as well, so Jack
Misha posted from set in costume. Minus the coat again, but I’m still blaming the heat…. But he was without in the two Ruthie videos as well… soo……? I don’t know. I still think it's a heat issue.
Night shoots are scheduled in a warehouse. Hand painted signs indicating quarantine were nearby
Kevin is back
Episode 15x03
Title: The Rupture
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: AS IT IS WRITTEN – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) together with Rowena (guest star Ruth Connell) work tirelessly to keep all of hell from breaking loose. Castiel (Misha Collins) cannot forgive an arrogant betrayal. Charles Beeson directed the episode written by Robert Berens. (#1504). Original Airdate 10/24/2019.

Guest stars:  Ruthie Connell
Other Spoilers/info:
Part of this ep will take place in hell as well as the cemetery where Jack died at the end of last season
Misha mentioned a scene at VanCon with him, Sam, Dean, Rowena, and Jack/Bel
Sam Smith was on set, but I would imagine she was visiting as she was in town for VanCon
Cas will leave “in a huff”
Promo photos show Cas bleeding from the ears
Episode 15x04 (filmed out of order)
Title: Atomic Monsters
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: JENSEN ACKLES DIRECTS – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate the mysterious death of a girl and the disappearance of another. Jensen Ackles directed the episode written by Davy Perez (#1501). Original Airdate 11/7/2019.

Director: Jensen Ackles
Filming Dates:  7/18-7/29

Promo: https://youtu.be/YjEHDwocD9M
Sneak Peak:
Castiel? Probably not  Jack? Probably not
Guest stars:  Rob Benedict
Other Spoilers/info:
Jensen mentioned  a guest star “fan favorite”  that hasn’t been seen since season 7 that is no longer in the business. Guesses include Becky, who hasn’t acted in a while but isn't exactly a fan favorite, Meg, who hasn't acted but she was in season 8, and Balthazar or Frank or Jo or Rufus, but all act frequently. Jensen doesn't always have the most accurate season memory, so he could be off on the season. Since this seems like a Chuck episode, my guess is Becky but I hope for Meg. SOURCE UNCONFIRMED- I haven’t seen this in a reliable source, so take it with a grain of salt. UPDATE- it sounds like Becky’s voice in the Shaving People, Punting things trailer. UPDATE- Jensen talked about a returning character in an interview with Variety in a completely contradictory way to this- a favorite male character of his that is busy working. Another guest? Or was he wrong the first time?
There was a beaver mascot on set… it looks like they are filming at a school called Beaverdale
Jensen and Jared filed outside in fed suits
Chuck will be in this one. Jensen directed him first alone with his beard unshaved (so maybe a solo Chuck scene or him interacting with others/not the boys). There are also theories of a time jump in this ep.
This will be a one off, classic monster hunting episode with some ties to ongoing storylines. Sam and Dean will leave the bunker to keep their skills sharp
Jensen directed
Misha will not be in this ep
SD Comic Con was during filming
Dean will be in the bunker in tactical equipment with a BEARD- fighting someone
Episode 15x05
Title: Proverbs 17:3
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: RICHARD SPEIGHT, JR. DIRECTS – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) routine case turns out to be anything but. Richard Speight, Jr. directed the episode written by Steve Yockey (#1505). Original Airdate 11/14/2019.
Written by: Yockey
Director: Speight
Filming Dates:  9/4-9/13

Sneak Peak:
Castiel? No  Jack? doubtful
Guest stars:
Other Spoilers/info::
This will most likely be Yockey’s last episode.
Matt Cohen was around, but I imagine he is following directors to prep for his own debut directing.
Scenes were filmed in the bunker and in a wooded area. A woman could be heard screaming in the outside scene.
The bible verse referenced is: “The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: But the LORD trieth the hearts.”
The preview indicates werewolves.
Episode 15x06
Title: Golden Time
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS: OUT OF DIFFICULTIES GROW MIRACLES – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are visited by an old friend. Castiel (Misha Collins) investigates the disappearance of a local teen. John Showalter directed the episode written by Meredith Glynn (#1506). Original Airdate 11/21/2019.

Other Spoilers/info:
Misha tweeted from set in costume, so Cas.
Misha also tweeted a pic in blood spatter with two bullet holes in his shirt
At least Jensen and Jared filmed in Rowena’s apartment
This will be a witch episode- Witches will invade Rowena’s apartment looking for books. They are very powerful. Dean gets thrown into a wall and Sam uses magic to stop them (from TVGuide)
Looks like Eileen in the promo!

“Nice work, Mr. Satan. You may be the savior of the world, after all.”
-          Goku, Dragon Ball Z Kai (Ep. 163)
This week’s Toonami Trending Rundown for the nights of May 19-20, 2018 as well as May 26-27, 2018, as we reach the final countdown to FLCL’s revival. And among other great moments, we saw Goku and co. attempt to persuade the world to lend them their energy for the spirit bomb, while Deku enters the UA Academy exams, and Sasuke vows vengeance on the Kages.
On Twitter, only #Toonami would successfully trend in the US, while on Tumblr, #Toonami would trend along with Boku no Hero Academia. The following week was Memorial Day Weekend, so with FLCL Progressive’s premiere just a week away, Toonami aired all 6 episodes of FLCL twice in anticipation. #FLCL would trend in the US on Twitter in the later hours as a result.
Tumblr media
Among the notable news from the past 2 weeks, Toonami released the premiere trailer for FLCL 2 Progressive, which you can see below. As FLCL 2 is an original production, Adult Swim has pulled out all the stops for promotion including showcasing this promo during Game 7 of the Western Conference finals as well as several billboards across several major cities.
youtube
For those who skipped last week’s Toonami due to Memorial Day festivities, Toonami showcased Part 4 of their Behind the Scenes look into FLCL’s production, this time featuring The Pillows, the band made famous by their musical contributions to this show. You can check it out below.
youtube
And speaking of The Pillows, this upcoming July, the band will be making a concert tour through 6 major cities in the US to commemorate the series revival. The dates for the concerts are as follows:
Tue July 10 - Boston, MA – Royale
Thu July 12 - New York, NY - Gramercy Theatre
Sun July 15 - Seattle, WA - Neptune THEATRE
Mon July 16 - Portland, OR - Hawthorne Theatre
Wed July 18 - San Francisco, CA - August Hall
Thu July 19 - Los Angeles, CA - The Regent Theater
While Adult Swim is attempting to secure bigger venues due to high demand, tickets are going by fast, so if you’re interested, check out www.adultswim.com/presents/pillows-tour/ for more information.
Finally for those wanting to know what’s replacing Ghost In The Shell as it has now completed its run, Toonami has announced that they will be doing an encore run of Lupin the Third Part IV to close out the block at 3:30am ET. With Part V presently airing in Japan and potentially on the horizon for Toonami in the near future, if you wish to watch Lupin again or were late to the party, now’s your chance.
Tune in Saturday as FLCL Progressive has its world premiere debut at 12:00 am Eastern, among other great moments. Until next week, stay gold.
Legend: The shows listed are ordered based on their appearance on the schedule. Show trends are listed in bold. The number next to the listed trend represents the highest it trended on the list (not counting the promoted trend), judging only by the images placed in the rundown. For the Twitter tweet counts, the listed number of tweets are also sorely based on the highest number shown based on the images on the rundown.

101 - Photograd Conjunction Zine
Whilst it is good to take photographs and work on certain projects. Is there much point of doing so unless people actually see it? Social media is of course the usual first port of call for many photographers and creatives, with the ability to upload for free and show a few, some or many people what it is that you do. This might either go well, or not. For me, social media just isn’t what I like to do - and I have tried for many many years. Yet, there are other ways that one can show work to a wider audience and potentially wind itself into the industry.
Submissions! Yes, sending work to certain companies/organisations where they are calling out for work from certain areas of creatives, with Photograd being a photographer centred place for graduates and current photography students, with Photograd recognised and supported by University of Suffolk. I have previous worked with PG, with my work being selected and shown in Photograd Zine 2020 last year when I was working on Mileage May Vary.
Tumblr media
Since then, I have wanted to work with Photograd again, as they are an incredibly friendly and helpful community of likeminded people. When I got the email that they were looking for work for an upcoming zine, I jumped at the opportunity. I have always enjoyed my working being printed and in a book, and with the inclusion of many other fantastic photographers being included, I felt it was a no-brainer.
Tumblr media
Slightly before the zine submission announcement, they asked for some images for their online gallery, which I gladly submitted some ‘new’ images from Epochal Territories, which can be seen here.
Tumblr media
Photograd had previously released a downloadable zine featuring work in response to Brexit, with their aim to produce a second zine with the aim to have it in print. The new zine would be themed around Brexit and the Global Pandemic, which I felt Epochal Territories briefly touches upon. E.P to me is more about the feelings and thoughts on our modern society, being isolated, alienated and estranged from our surroundings, being paranoid, catatonic and listless in a fast paced society where one feels disconnected from a digitally connected world.
Tumblr media
The details were straightforward as usual with PG. The selected photographers would be able to pay £12 or more to contribute towards PG and printing costs, they would receive a free zine with a 50% off discount for family and friends, with the selected photographers also being placed on the mailing list and informed about future opportunities and PG works. Photographers would also have to be U.K based, either on a BA or MA course and clear up any details about which images one would really like to be selected, with of course the copyright of the images being owned by the photographer.
Tumblr media
Within the application where details of the submission and what to include:
University and Course
200 Word Statement
5-10 Images (96dpi and 10in on the long edge)
Any website/social media handle
The statement is as follows:
‘My name is Ray Goodwin, and I am studying an MA in Photography at Plymouth College of Art. My work mainly focuses around the documentation of our modern society whilst exploring the relationship of how it makes me feel. Epochal Territories is the documentation of our modern society, utilising urban, suburban and edgeland areas of where we transiently inhabit. This project explores the relationship between these transient spaces, and the alienation, estrangement, listlessness, political malaise, ennui and general dissatisfaction of living within a Late Capitalist society - a society where one feels more disconnected from a world that becomes more digitally connected. A world where it is hard to breathe and is easy to feel suffocated, with the ever encompassing feeling of being alienated buzzing deafeningly in the background like overhead power lines. You can find my work at https://raygoodwinphotos.tumblr.com or https://instagram.com/raygoodwinphotos.’
My submission was selected once again, and it shall be in print with PG. Not too long after, I got a draft of what would be the pages within the book:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This time, PG has decided to feature a small amount of photographers, yet use more of their work to showcase what they can do and what they have to offer. I was rather surprised to have so many images featured, as well as being on the website for the advertisement of the zine:
Tumblr media
I had also received a promo image to use on social media to promote the zine:
Tumblr media
It was soon announced that the zine would be called Conjunction, and would release in March 2020, with the first prints being sold out rather quickly with a second run coming in short succession. I eagerly await my zine in the post, and this journal entry will be updated accordingly when it arrives.
Redaction 6/3/2021:
Tumblr media
The zine arrived on 6/3/2021, which was a lot fasted than I was originally anticipating. The zine is also a lot nicer and professionally made than I had anticipated also, bearing a hard back front and rear cover, with the print quality being lovely and clear. My particular zine was number 7 of 55 first copies, and only one of 20 people to feature in the zine itself alongside many great artists and recent graduates.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am thoroughly pleased with the outcome of the zine, and it just makes me want to continue my support to Photograd and certainly keep my eyes peeled for any future projects that they undertake.

New thoughts on The Orville and Star Trek Discovery
This post contains spoilers on both series up to “Cupid’s Dagger” for The Orville and “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” for Discovery. As I’ll probably get wordy, I’ll throw in a page break.
Before the break, though, the tl;dr is The Orville continues to be great (though this week’s episode is a bit controversial to some); meanwhile, approximately three episodes ago, Discovery finally became, for me anyway, proper Star Trek. And the renewal of both series is a cause for celebration.
I’ll start with Star Trek Discovery. Up to and including “Choose Your Pain”, the episode that reintroduced Harry Mudd, I was starting to lose hope in Discovery. It was too dark, too unlikeable, the characters were not gelling either as a team or as TV heroes, the Klingon subplot was - save for some unexpected in-show shipping of two Klingons - dull as an economics textbook. It was fading. And I speak as someone who gave both Voyager and Enterprise more than a year each to find their voice. The “icing on the cake” was having two characters unnecessarily utter the F-word for no other apparent reason than to justify the episode TV-MA rating. I was already saying to people that I gave it two more weeks and then I was probably done.
And then came “Lethe” and something great happened. It felt almost like having Stamets and Tilly drop F-bombs caused the show and its writers to snap to attention and snap out of whatever TV-MA/streaming cliches rut they’d fallen into. Maybe hearing two people in Starfleet uniforms make like Malcolm Tucker made them realize they’d taken things too far. Because all of a sudden we began a run of episodes that truly felt like Star Trek, the characters snapped into place as a team and as TV heroes, the plots were interesting, Michael dropped the woe is me routine (for the most part) and even the Klingon stuff became less boring. OK, the tech is still too advanced, the Klingons look awful, and there are a few other problems, some of which (like the fact it’s a prequel) cannot be fixed ... but the show felt like Trek, finally.
“Lethe” gave us some valuable insight into Sarek and Michael’s backstory. And while I still wonder how they’ll reconcile not having any past reference to Spock having an adopted sister (maybe Sybok will show up and whisk her away somewhere), and the new abilities related to the mind meld are coming close to deus ex machina territory, it still seemed to work. Having Canadian actress Mia Kirschner as Amanda - who resembles both a young Jane Wyatt as well as Abramsverse Amanda Winona Ryder - was a bonus and I hope we see her again.
Then came my favourite episode so far, “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad”. Hopefully this episode will silence those Discovery fans who keep harping about The Orville borrowing/stealing/revisiting storylines and concepts from Trek considering this episode was basically a remake of the classic TNG tale “Cause and Effect” with a touch of Battlestar Galactica 2004′s “33″ tossed in for good measure - and even hints of Doctor Who’s “Heaven Sent”. And it works. Stamets finally became a character I enjoyed watching, and Tyler also became more interesting. Some are complaining about him and Michael becoming an item but, again, this is Star Trek and while TOS never went there, all the other shows had on-board romances. The time loop was intelligently played and out and Rainn Wilson was terrific as Mudd though I hope his cold-blooded killings early in the episode were done with his assumption that time would reset and everyone would be fine - I’m OK with Wilson playing Mudd as a darker character (so far he’s been the best part about Discovery), but making Mudd a cold-blooded murderer crosses the line. It’s also a shame they couldn’t put Mudd in the title of this or the Choose Your Pain episode, as that’s always been a bit of a tradition in the franchise, but they obviously didn’t want to give the surprise of his appearance away.
“Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” was not as much fun as the last two, but it gave us some valuable character development for Saru, making him less of an Odo clone. And the subplot where the female Klingon operative teams up with and then appears to betray Admiral Cornwell was interesting. I think there’s more there than we think. By the way, I’ve been a fan of Jayne Brook since she was in WIOU back in 1990 so I’m glad to see her on this show. I hope they don’t kill her character off.
So, yeah, Discovery suddenly got good three weeks ago (and to be fair, “Choose Your Pain” was a good episode too; they just didn’t need to have the juvenile swearing; I was reminded how in one of Torchwood’s first episodes they had Jack announce he was taking a pee mainly because that was something they couldn’t do in Doctor Who. It just served to cement some folk’s negative first impressions). If it keeps on going this way, it’s going to become appointment viewing for me.
The Orville, meanwhile, continues to go from strength to strength. After the surprisingly grim “Krill”, we had “Majority Rule”, which tweaked today’s knee-jerk “like-dislike” culture. (Don’t let that stop you from clicking that little heart at the bottom of this article, though! 😂) I’ve heard people compare it to Black Mirror. Having never seen Black Mirror, my comparison is actually more towards The Outer Limits. It raised some interesting questions and right after watching the episode a friend sent me a video of Katy Perry doing an “apology tour” type TV appearance for some indiscretion of hers, much like LaMarr has to do in the episode. I enjoyed seeing the crew in (sort of) modern day outfits, too.
Then we had “Into the Fold”, a great spotlight episode for Penny Johnson Jerald (formerly Kassidy Yates on DS9) with the surprising reveal that she’s a single mom raising her two boys on board the Orville. The fact we’ve already been introduced to the concept of families on board a starship both with Bortus and his husband - and in TNG before that - makes it less of an ass-pull than such a sudden introduction might usually appear. And it works really well as a character builder for Isaac as he becomes the boys’ surrogate father when Dr. Finn goes missing. I have some issues with Dr. Finn’s rather violent escape (I don’t think shooting the guy was justified) but the episode holds together well otherwise.
Last night’s episode, “Cupid’s Dagger,” was the first overtly comic episode of the series, and it rubbed a few people the wrong way. The same way comedic episodes of TNG and DS9 often did. (Two decades of brain bleach have yet to wipe away the memory of Quark’s head superimposed atop a woman’s lingerie-clad body. 😱) There are also those who questioned the wisdom of an episode about a Deltan-like race that causes anyone who comes in contact with them to become sexually infatuated airing during a time when so many people are accusing or being accused of sexual misconduct and assault. I won’t go into those arguments. I’ll just say the episode was a very strong character building episode once again which gave some closure to the scene in the pilot where Kelly cheats on Ed, while raising more questions. We also saw some resolution to the Finn and Yaphit relationship (uh ... yeah ... I’ll just leave that with a “no comment”), some great Alara moments, and an interesting resolution to the episode’s B-plot involving preventing a war. We also get to enjoy the first appearance by one of Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy co-stars, as Mike Henry appears in a very funny running gag about an alien who wants to start piping elevator muzak into the Orville’s turbolifts.
Next week’s Orville is looking to be another dramatic one, and if the promo images that have been released are anything to go by, it might be an Alara-centric story, and more Halston Sage is never a bad thing.
---
So basically where I sit now is that The Orville is still amazing, a lot of fun, and still gives off classic Trek vibes with a little modern edginess, though “Cupid’s Dagger” probably pushes the show as far as I’d like it to go in terms of the comedy. Discovery, meanwhile, appears to have undergone some sort of slight internal reboot/reset after its initial set of episodes. Which is good because I want to be able to enjoy both shows, both for the remainder of their first seasons, and into next fall, too.
As a side note, it’s been announced that a book on the making of The Orville is going to be published in January 2018: The World of the Orville by Jeff Bond.
A North American DVD release for Season 1 of The Orville has also been indicated on Amazon, though no date has been announced yet. I’m assuming sometime early 2018, though with Season 1 ending in early December there’s always a chance they might try to sneak in a release for Christmas.
As for Discovery, a novel based on the show is already out in Canada and the US and IDW is gearing up to start publishing a spin-off comic or two. No word on a DVD/Blu-ray release. Being a streaming series doesn’t disqualify it from physical release (Netflix issues most of its shows on DVD eventually, with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black usually coming out within months of their release - though I wouldn’t be marking any calendar dates re: House of Cards at the moment) but I wouldn’t expect to see anything until at least fall 2018 assuming they release the complete Season 1 at once.

May – Aug
Tumblr media
In my last reflection, I spoke about doing a mix of larger and smaller pieces of work, Childs Alphabet etc. I think those months set me up nicely for what I've created/been part of between May-August. Over these 4 months, there have been dips in creating work due to doing things other than the drawing which has slowed down my progression of skills/experimentation. These dips haven’t impacted my 3x week posting schedule on social media but more the larger personal projects that needed to be chipped away at... haven’t been started. I hope to change this in October, I would say September but we’re already halfway through it so September will be used as a buffer month to get everything back in order before I get going properly again.
My goals in my last reflection were:
Put the work in to ensure a successful exhibition in July
Spend time working on targets set
Find and talk to some local creatives
Put together a PDF Portfolio
Start putting together a self-promo pack
 And I've completed the following:
Put the work in to ensure a successful exhibition in July
Find and talk to some local creatives
Put together a PDF Portfolio
The Land + Sea exhibition took a lot of time and preparation, I spent 7 weeks of evenings on just making the artwork. I ended up with 4 a3 giclee prints and 48 a5 hand-drawn pieces to be displayed along with my mum's paintings. The event was short but well-received. The work I created was purposely made to sell so I drew more common seaside themes (beach huts, fishermen, sea creatures, seaside scenes and boats) to suit the space we were exhibiting and the audience of the village.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The making on the a3 scenes was done using my normal process, the pieces had more elements to them than I usually put in and it was interesting to see how that affected the workflow and timescale of making them. I printed them on Giclee so that the colour vibrancy stayed close to what it looked like on the screen. Photo rag paper feels nice too. I’ll print using Giclee again, the downfall is that every print is individual and there isn't a way of doing multiples without spending out a lot of cash in advance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the start of preparing for the exhibition, I was conscious that I hadn't drawn anything just by hand for quite a while and I felt that it was something I needed to get my confidence back up with so I decided for the a5 images that they would all be hand-drawn. I used rag paper, ink and gouache paint to keep the colours as bright as they would have been digital. I made 12 pieces in each of the 4 topics (beach huts, fishermen, sea creatures & boats). I gave myself a week to complete 12 drawings and repeated that until all 48 were done. It was a quick turnaround which meant I didn’t overthink it but I also would say that they’re not my best work – having 12 of each gave room for variety within the area and it was interesting to see which ones different people liked the most. It’s funny my favourite ones to do were the sea creatures yet the people that came preferred the beach huts and fishermen. Some feedback during the show was that the set looked most impactful when they were shown together, it could be that I create a print with all individual’s on – this would only really work for the beach huts and fishermen as the size of each person/hut is similar. This is something I'm not in a rush to do during the winter months, but I will return to this for the start of spring.
I think it was a good thing to have done as it helped me to see a physical audience and test what people like and dislike. The process of making for it kept my focus and showed that if I want to, I can chip away at larger pieces/projects rather than always making small fast work.
Tumblr media
In August I started putting together a portfolio and website which made me take stock of what I'd created during the year. It was good to do this, but I quickly realised that I'd made a lot of images and not many of them had been shaped into projects/outcomes, so it looked sparse compared to my social media accounts. Also, that pretty much everything I've done has been personal projects and competitions as I haven’t reached out and contacted anyone about doing work for them. This needs to change. I need to start putting myself out there. I’m happy with how my portfolio is currently looking in terms of flow/work - I would like to add some basic animation into the pdf document to make it more engaging, once this is done, I will send be sending it out. I need to put the time into researching who and where I could get work - I know that it’s best to start with editorials so in the coming months I will research into art directors. I’m still under the impression that it is best to send out physical things to spark interest rather than be just another email. This is something that I also want to work on, this will take more time as I would expect that the physical work needs to be more specific and personally addressed to them. I know I'm going around in circles and I need to cut the crap and just email people. If that doesn’t work, then try something new rather than thinking I need to do everything at the same time, and it needs to be perfect. I need to see it as a process as currently, I'm getting nowhere. This 'business’ side doesn’t come naturally to me I'd quite happily be in a cave and draw for the rest of time if I could but that’s just not how it works.
In some parts of May-Aug, my inspiration levels were running dry, so I started looking further afield for inspiration. I realised when drawing an Egyptian god for work that all the documentation of ancient Egypt was people drawn sideways – which is also my favourite angle to draw people. so I took a trip to the British Museum to draw lots of wall carvings. I focussed more on Assyria’s carvings, copying the poses but modernising them with sliders and socks and trying to think about what they’d be saying to each other. I hadn’t mixed in much speech in my drawings for a long while, and.. I think to do it well takes a practice that I haven’t been doing – I don’t make much in terms of comics/narrative pieces. I would like to stretch this muscle a bit more as after going to Hackney Comic and Zine fair I got hyped about comics again so I'm trying not to let the inspiration for it fizzle out before I start doing something. I think the images were successful, but the text/speech was too fragmented for a narrative. This is something I want to work on as zines/comics are great things and I need to start making them so that I can take them to stalls.
Tumblr media
During these 4 months, my process has continued to naturally refine for digital work (adding in illustrator as part of making). I have started to realise a reliance on compositing the images digitally. For example, when I draw by hand, I draw separate elements to then digitally fit together. This has both benefits and disadvantages; it makes pieces more editable and saves the time of me trying to draw it perfect all in one. The downside is that I'm over-relying on this and barely ever now drawing something fully for fear of messing up. I’m going to start combatting this again by making sure I add more work into my flash book. (My flash book is a photo album that I use to hold and store fully drawn pieces of work so that someday I can tattoo them on people).
I think since January my work and confidence overall have grown a lot. I’ve found a variety of colours I like using and I'm surer in the work I'm producing. I have seemed to stay very close to my Berol pen, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. I have been finding it easier to define my work/ approach:
I’m an Essex based Illustrator raised on a steady diet of cartoons and loud music; both of those things have influenced my approach to illustration. I like to communicate using block colour and bold lines to express what is being said with confidence.
In my practice, I try to articulate the workings of my mind in relation to the ‘real’ world with the hope to examine and display my presence. I’ve always been intrigued with different ways of communicating, stories, morals and ideas. I get a lot of inspiration from songs, books and the mundane around me and use this information to help formulate an idea for a piece of work.
I’ve grown to realise that I learn best by doing, so throughout the process of idea to the final piece, it can be revised, shaped and moulded until it looks and feels right. Projects are worked out methodically in terms of the steps that need to be done to create the outcome, what it is I’m trying to achieve and how best to communicate that through the medium used. A lot of the time, projects give me a chance to find new inspirations through researching an area that I’m not familiar with, this along with my existing interests feed into the outcome.
I would say in my most recent work the overarching theme is a positive retaliation to the current socio/political climate that we’re living in. Within that, there are sub-strands of my work focusing on mental health, politics and societal intangible needs; using what’s around me and trying to draw out something hopeful so that the final pieces communicate positive messages.
But I am still struggling to understand where and how I fit into illustration work. I hope this will come with time and perseverance.
Overall, these last few months have been productive. I’ve done work that I wouldn’t usually do and I'm slowly creeping out from under my rock. I think it’s hard to reflect on such a large amount of time properly, so I'll try not to leave so much time between each time, next time. I think a shorter one every month will be more beneficial for me going forward to recap and set my focus for the coming month.
Going forward my plans for October are:
To complete Inktober and make it into a zine
Go to 2 Drink and Draw sessions
Find 10 suitable art directors/contacts
Start working on a comic
Spend time working on targets set
Plan out Christmas merch plan and start making
Apply to guardian competition
