“They think you’ll go mad with power? Let’s give you that power and show them you’re perfectly okay,” Ambrose said, the demon in him showing in his tone. He didn’t glance back at Fiona to see her response as they walked through the woods to the clearing they had claimed for sacrifices. He already had a lamb there, white and unblemished, waiting for its neck to be slit.
“Ambrose, are you sure this is a good idea?” she asked, hesitance in her voice. He spun back to face her, an evil look decorating his handsome face. He was smiling. Ambrose wasn’t the type to smile, and considering how this wasn’t a happy situation, that meant he was scheming and planning something horrible. Fiona loved that about him, but she was still a little wary.
“Do you want more powers, Fiona? Or do you want to stay relatively powerless?” She could only create a little blue fire, and she could sometimes move things without touching them. The squirrels had only done so much; it was time for her first proper sacrifice.
Fiona straightened, shoulders tense as she faced down her boyfriend, whose demonic nature was certainly starting to show for the first time in maybe ever. “I want more power.”
“Then follow me.” Ambrose spun back around, already stalking through the forest to get to their clearing.
////
Fiona knew something big was coming; she could feel it. That being said, she hadn’t expected an innocent lamb to be baaing in the clearing, one of its rear legs linked with a short chain to a nearby tree. She bit her lip. The power sounded amazing. She wanted the power, but she wasn’t sure her soul would be up to the sacrifice of a creature larger than a squirrel.
But she wanted power.
Fiona took a deep breath and took Ambrose’s proffered knife. This one, she noticed, had a bone handle rather than the wooden one she’d used with the squirrels.
“What animal is this from?” she asked, examining the intricate carvings on the bone.
“Human.”
She nearly dropped the knife. Okay. That one she hadn’t seen coming. If they were using a human bone knife to make this sacrifice then something big was coming.
“What type of powers am I going to gain, anyways?” Fiona continued to examine the knife. Flowers, which she was pretty sure were asphodel, decorated the handle, mixed with realistic skulls and laurel leaves. As she paid more attention to the knife, she noted that it must be ancient, or have at least major significance.
“The knife is an amplifier. It’ll take the powers of this sacrifice and amplify them for you. As far as the spell, it’ll give you the basic demon magic. Transfiguration, fire conjuration, maybe blood manipulation. It’s been a few millennia, so I’m not entirely certain.”
Fiona raised an eyebrow at the last power. She hadn’t expected that one; it was certainly something even Prom couldn’t do. A smile carved itself on her face at that thought. Witch powers were great, but as Fiona had studied them, they seemed limited. Witches needed spells; demonic powers were stronger, stranger, and special. They didn’t require spells or any ingredients. All they took was focus and the power fused with her blood in every sacrifice.
Ambrose walked over to her, dragging the lamb behind him. Unlike past sacrifices, the lamb was perfectly conscious and rather confused. Fiona felt a tinge if sadness at the thought of taking such an innocent life, but this wasn’t a human, so she pushed past it.
“You remember the words?” he asked. Ambrose had made her memorize the incantation on their walk over from her apartment. Fiona nodded.
She took a deep breath, and with the bone knife in hand, slit the lamb’s throat. A horrible screech caught itself in the lamb’s throat, and a dark laugh came out of Ambrose. He was enjoying this, and much to her surprise, so was Fiona. She could already feel the power surging.
Fiona didn’t hesitate in slicing her palm open and reciting the Greek words. She barely registered the pain, too enthralled watching her blood fill every crevice of the knife’s intricate details. Crimson outlined every cut, every line, every mark of the asphodels and skulls and leaves.
This time the dark laughter came from Fiona, wonder and amazement mixed with a surge of adrenaline and power. She could already feel the ability to do more, to be more.
Ambrose watched in silence, and Fiona didn’t look at him as she focused on the dead lamb at her feet. Her head tilted, eyes narrowing on the blood still leaking from the lamb’s neck. With a smile as cruel as Ambrose’s, she raised the blood through the air, pulling it into her hand.
She could get used to this.
At last, Fiona looked up to Ambrose, pleased to see pride on his face, as well as shock.
“That knife amplified more than I’ve been told it would,” he mused.
“Where is it from? How’d you get it?” She knew enough to know it wasn’t man made.
“Hecate. One of my many gifts.” She raised an eyebrow.
“You gave me the knife your ex girlfriend gave you? Classy, babe.”
Ambrose chuckled, stepping shamelessly on the dead lamb and wrapping his arms around Fiona.
“You’re much more enchanting.”
“Careful, you’re comparing me to a Greek goddess who happens to be the deity of magic. I wouldn’t call me enchanting.” He chuckled again, kissing her cheek.
“I do what I want, Fiona, and I’m not scared of her wrath. She’s locked me up before but I won’t let her do it again.”
She frowned.
“It was Hecate who locked you up in Hell?” He nodded solemnly, the proud smile dripping from his face and falling away.
“Among others, yes. I was too much of a hazard to humans, apparently, so she got rid of me.”
“Because that worked so well,” Fiona said with a roll of her eyes. Ambrose smirked at her, all solemnity gone from his chiseled features.
“We have your little witch friend to thank for getting me out, and her devilish boyfriend.” He didn’t mention the other two, but Fiona knew why. It was Prom and Pollux who had done the planning and much of the heavy lifting with the summoning spell.
“Ambrose, you’re a demon. From Hell. Isn’t devilish a compliment coming from you?”
“Well he is devilishly good looking.” She swatted his shoulder with her still bloody hand. The pain still hadn’t hit her.
“Keep your eyes off my best friend’s boyfriend. Even if they are fighting.” The look on her boyfriend’s face did nothing to say he’d keep his eyes off of Pollux, but Fiona hadn’t expected anything else.
“What do you say we head back to your place? I have a feeling Prometheus salted me out again.”
Fiona giggled. When Prom or Pollux was in a mood, out came the holy water-salt mixture. Prom certainly had been in a bad mood earlier in the day.
“That sounds perfect to me.”

Hades thoughts so far
Art is amazing music is amazing, but this is Supergiant so: duh
I’m not really a person to ask about gameplay on a technical level (this is the first roguelite I’ve played, unless Sunless Sea is close enough to count?), but it’s fun enough? Honestly the need to get past mooks and to bosses with a decent amount of health intact has led me to develop, like, actual strategy rather than pure button mashing. Kudos there, it’s not every day a game makes me do that.
That said, the combat in itself is not highly rewarding to me personally as a player, especially given the extreme difference that good boons/general RNG can make. The one (1) time I’ve gotten past the Hydra so far, my boons were so good that I honestly... wasn’t really afraid of losing, even though it had kicked my ass every single time up until that point. What I’m saying, though, is I’m not sitting down to play because I want the fun of the combat. Either I’m trying to get further than I’ve gotten before, or I’m hoping that someone will say something new to me when I get sent home. The latter is what’s most rewarding to me by far.
But that’s just me as a player. The combat is fun enough, but not what I’m here for.
Relatedly, the pacing. This is a game style that can be very punishing if you’re very bad at it, because you just. keep getting sent home. This is mitigated by the fact that home is where the Being Nice to People Sim portion of the game happens. And for me, that mitigates quite a lot! I love the Being Nice to People Sim portions!! I will say more about them below. But when you finally run out of new conversations at home but you’re still bashing your head against the same boss (or just against Asphodel in general and can I just say FUCK that boat)..., that, for me, started feeling very bad very quickly. It... felt a little like the game saying “oh, you are... worse at this than we anticipated.” So some balance there would be nice. Or rather, it’s very well-balanced up until it abruptly isn’t. I don’t know how one would go about fixing this or if it really is a matter of just gitting gud much faster than I did.
Less careful, but still a little careful, about spoilers below the cut--
But more about Hades as a Being Nice to People Sim With Roguelite Elements.
(Is that rude? Please let me emphasize that I mean it with the utmost affection and if I’m mocking anything, it’s my own priorities as I play the game.)
I want to be everyone’s friend? Zagreus ALSO wants to be everyone’s friend, and he just... goes for it!! He is so polite! So decorous! So sincere! He shows appreciation and gratitude and care for the people who support him and it gives me so many warm fuzzies to be a part of that. So many warm fuzzies. I love it. I am captivated by the dynamic.
I have 16 ambrosia stored up right now, I’m gonna make it rain as soon as new conversations get patched in. Aggressively befriends everyone. Meg will tell me to fuck off, and I will enthusiastically continue not fucking off.
(I love Meg, like the predictable little bi gremlin I am. Raspy voice and a whip? Supergiant is trying to kill me.) (Meg is also trying to kill me, but that’s not working out for her anymore.) (I hope that’s not making her feel bad about herself?? I am concerned.)
I say decorous specifically, by the way, because of the difference in the way Zagreus communicates with the Olympians; he’s more formal and polite. I like that too. It’s proper and composed. I like it.
Some story thoughts--
I think it’s pretty clear that getting to the surface is not going to be The Answer To All Of Zag’s Problems like he is acting like he thinks it is. He’s got a naive side to him, and willful and young, and he’s either not noticing or not thinking about how all the Olympians interact with him more as an idea, a repository for their assumptions, rather than a person. The contrast between their impersonal encouragement and the by-and-large loving dynamics Zag has with most of the people he’s grown up with--I have to think that’s significant, and it worries me that Zag isn’t considering that at all. It feels like he’s hanging all his hopes on this one uncertain possibility, and ignoring evidence to the contrary, and I’m concerned about what happens when reality solidifies and fails to live up to his hopes.
(And this isn’t even getting into that thing I accidentally learned about mythological!Zagreus when I googled the name, insert yikes emoji, that could get interesting)
Am I shipper trash who is absolutely fixated on anything I can get re: Zagreus and Megaera’s relationship, whatever it may be and may have been in the past? *checks* oh boy I sure am
weird exes?? is where I am with that atm? Possibly arranged marriage weird exes???
delicious
I love Meg a lot, I think she has a fuller picture of what Zag’s rebellion means for the Underworld as a whole, and of what’s already going on in the Underworld, and it’s important to her and it’s her job and she’s overworked and all of her overwork isn’t actually holding things together and Zagreus is making it worse. I think she feels kind of an eldest child sense of responsibility and duty to make things work, whereas Zag is the youngest and least mature child acting without considering the consequences.
(so, sibling-like; but still weird exes.) (it’s fine, it’s fiiiine, it’s greek myth)
(and again, this sense of responsibility I see in her makes me worry about how she feels about failing over and over to stop Zagreus)
(I. love. her.)
So as for where I suppose the story is going from here, I think navigation of the various definitions of family (birth family--family that raised you--family of choice) is only going to become more prominent; and I think Zagreus is going to come face-to-face with something that will prevent him from continuing to believe that finding his birth mother (who left him behind and asked her husband to look after... the dog) is a cure-all.
What that looks like in terms of gamplay, though, I don’t have the faintest idea.

A Surprisingly Charming Underworld | A Continuation of the Hades Review (Blog #2)
Introduction
This is a follow-up blog to my previous review of Hades. In that post I covered the game’s unique gameplay and how it absorbs the player’s attention. This time, however, we will be discussing the different artistic parts of the game. These parts include story, visuals, characters, and many other things that are too brief to be made into a separate post.
Part 2: Progress (1/2)
By the time this post has been written, I have completed several more successful escape attempts and have gotten one of the endings. I still haven’t reached the true ending yet, despite having about 70 hours clocked into this game. I haven’t achieved the specific requirements for me to see it, but perhaps I’ll edit this post once I do.
I’m starting to understand the routine and structure of how I write these reviews, and I think it will help me greatly in organizing my thoughts about things. My brain often jumps from one point to another with no in-between, so perhaps writing them down will force me to draw connections between them.
Part 2: Review (2/2)
*Disclaimer: keep in mind that these are just my takeaways from the game, and that many may not share the same opinions as me. I emphasize this on part 2 in particular because of how it deals with more artistic/storytelling aspects.
I went into Hades very blindly. I had no previous experience with it like fans who were following it all throughout development. Consequently, I had no idea who Zagreus was and what kind of character he was, much less any of the other ones. I will say, though, that my first impression upon watching the trailer was that the game would would be a really edgy, considering that Zagreus’ character design (as well as the background art) generally had a darker look to it.
To my shock, it turned out to be quite light-hearted and humorous, although its story beats still felt important and serious.
The basic premise was that Zagreus wanted to escape from his father’s realm in the Underworld. What the trailer doesn’t tell you is that he is doing it to find his lost mother, Persephone, who returned to the surface after thinking he died at birth. His father wouldn’t allow him to see her, for fear of endangering her. Zeus had given her to him “as a gift” (which Hades was rightfully upset about, despite loving her) without the knowledge of any other of the Olympians. If they found out what happened to her, there would be war among the Gods. Of course, the information isn’t given right off the bat. Zagreus, and proximity the audience, has no idea why his father doesn’t let him see her. The player discovers this information as they attempt more and more runs, making the progression of the story feel organic and natural. The player doesn’t get the full ending once the first run is completed, so the story is also responsible for much of its replay value.
Dialogue being closely related to the player’s personal decisions is interesting, and I’ve seen few games that have that. However, it would be less interesting if the characters delivering these lines were flat and boring. But we’re in luck! The characters’ memorable personalities and stunning design are more than enough to charm the player, aided by stellar voice acting! Here are a few of my favorites ones:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(names from top to bottom - Achilles, Thanatos, Dionysus)
I also want to applaud the game for good representation! Zagreus is canonically bisexual, and it isn’t hidden in the media itself (which is a common thing for video games and T.V shows to do).
The art style in this game is amazing, and all I can say is that it is simply stunning to look at. This isn’t only limited to the characters either. The backdrops of each region in the Underworld are very aesthetically pleasing. The colors blend very well with each other. You need to sometimes stop to appreciate it, as the gameplay can be extremely intense while going through these areas. Here is a picture of Elysium, the third area of the game.
Tumblr media
The music in this game is also very well composed. My favorite thing about it is that the soundtrack uses both ethnic guitar instruments such as bağlamas and incorporates elements of rock for the more intense fights in the game. It fits perfectly with the kind of theme that Hades has. It has both “the old” and “the new” wrapped up in a nice package. My favorite songs include “The Lament of Orpheus” and “Out of Tartarus”, which was the song that the team chose to market the game with. I have to confess that I’ve listened to these and various other songs on more than one occasion during my zoom classes.

A question that is often thrown around about this game is if it is accurate to Greek mythology. It is often said that modern media always wrongly portrays it, so is Hades any different? The answer is (mostly) a yes.
Hades removes a lot of the more icky relationships between the gods of the original stories, like inc*st and p*dophilia, which were not thought to be problematic when Greek mythology was written. They change around parts of the family tree so none of those elements were present. This is understandable, and can’t really be avoided.
The game take a lot of creative liberties with the areas of the Underworld. Asphodel in the original myths is a flower field where many of the ordinary souls go to. Asphodel hosts the same type of souls in Hades, but the area is a scorching hot field of lava and fire. I can infer that they made this change for a more practical reason, however. A flowery meadow would be too similar to what the developers picture for Elysium, so they wanted to have a different look for it.  . Although, it is still alluded that Asphodel used to be luscious and green, but was flooded by magma river Phlegethon. I can appreciate that they were still faithful to the original tales in this way.
Other than these minor details, I’d like to say it’s very well researched and a good representation of the original stories. It clearly differentiates itself from the Hollywood tropes that make up many movies based off of Greek mythology. They nail the dysfunctional relationships and dynamics between Hades and the other Olympians, who have a very strained relationship. I also enjoy the fact that they made the Olympians rather condescending and temperamental, even if it was in a subtle way. The original Greek gods were definitely very flawed people according to the myths.
Drawing on that idea, the game plays on themes of family, especially ones that are dysfunctional. Zagreus has harbored resentment towards his dad, as he has never treated him kindly. It was mostly his stepmother, Nyx (the personification of night) who raised him throughout his life after Persephone had left. The player can tell from the moment they first see Hades that the two are not on good terms. The way he constantly berates him and insults him  Hades was never outright violent towards Zagreus (he is the final boss at the end of each run, but outside of that Hades has never been violent with him), but emotionally neglected him for his whole life. I can honestly connect with Zagreus, because I know what it’s like to live in a dysfunctional environment with parents who are no longer together.
What is heartwarming, though, is that all the other servants in this House of Hades support Zagreus (some more than others), and many of them try to help him in his escape attempts. It sends a message that there will always be people who care, even when your circumstances aren’t the most favorable.
In addition, after many successful escapes, Persephone will actually return to the Underworld with Zagreus. When that happens, she helps Hades reconcile with his son, and his son reconcile with him in turn. It isn’t an instant change, as both still have mild hostility towards one another, but it is a step forward.
Reflection/Final Thoughts
Hades is a game that believes any relationship can be salvaged if both parties are willing to try and understand the other. It is an amazing game, with amazing visuals and audio. It gets more impressive when you realize Supergiant is an indie game company. Only a handful of people worked together on the project, and it has more quality than a lot of Triple A games out there (looking at you Cyberpunk). The company even has a significant social media presence, where they interact with fans quite often. This illustrates how much they care about them, and the passion they have put into every aspect of the developing process.
Final Score - 5/5 <3
