my 5 favourite k-pop music videos <3

I love music videos, and in k-pop there are a lot of mildy shitty ones, but there are also some amazing ones that are just as iconic as they are aesthetically pleasing. Obviously budget will come into play here, so big 4 groups will be more prevalent on this list, but I tried to be as fair as possible, within reason. Also, I'm a girl group stan, so don't expect many boy groups. Obviously I will forget some, but maybe I'll make a part two, and you are very welcome to leave your fave mvs in the rbs or comments. This list is in no particular order, lets gaur

1. 'Feel Special' - TWICE (JYP Ent.)

This music video inspired this list, and for good reason. 'Feel Special' is in my opinion, the epitome of Twice, as they stand today. It encapsulates their more mature concept post 'Yes Or Yes', but it doesn't alienate their debut cuter concept, it rather welcomes it with open arms and celebrates it as a part of Twice's history, something their newer releases occasionally struggle with. Visually its a feast, its decadent and lavish, and positively gorgeous. Each member has her own movie-esque set, employing various genres and aesthetics, and then the members unite in the most glittery set ever concieved, the gold contrasting their raspberry and champagne outfits magnificently, while also referencing the group's official colours, as seen on their lightstick. The whole video is cinematic and opulent, and every detail, down to Sana's dip died pink hair, and Nayeon's stunning ginger curls which I wish she would bring back, is flawless. The only gripe I have is Chaeyoung's unblended foundation in her solo scene, but hey, we aren't all be perfect. My favourite scenes in this video are the afor-mentioned glittery golden arches group scene, as well as Jihyo's rainbow vintage television scene, that was surprisingly ahead of its time in terms of its retro aesthetics. It's a must-watch music video for the history books, and it's Twice's best song too - it deserves no less.

2. 'Why Not?' - LOONA (BlockBerry Creative - ew)

Note: If you would like to watch this m/v, please stream it from a non official yt channel, in accordance with the boycott. They will usually be marked with 'Boycott Ver.' in the title or something similar.

Loona has a lot of amazing music videos in their arsenal, but 'Why Not?' goes above and beyond. It's one of the most visually striking music videos I have ever seen, and its grasp on colour, composition, and rhythm is completely unparalleled. It's vibrancy is just gorgeous, full of neon lights and shining metallics. The video exists in a constant state of dichotomy: both cool and warm, metropolitan and pastoral, manmade and fantastical. You would assume this would ruin the video's visual message, but the contrast actually enhances it, as well as furthering the group's lore. it's unafraid to experiment with aspect ratio and camera movement, and along with the subversive editing, the final product is unique as well as timeless. Who cares that the last five scenes were neon and retro-futuristic? It's time for Heejin and Hyunjin's black and white minimalist mildly 1920s suited up dance break with a 4:3 aspect ratio of course! As the song itself says, why not? It's as playful as the song, as well as being visually stunning. My favourite scenes include Choerry's upside down mirror moment with the neon lights, as well as Kim Lip in the field with the funky glowing orbs, and of course the cult circle on the moon scene. Fucking iconic.

3. 'Ditto' (Sides A & B) - NewJeans (Ador)

Note: I have a full review of this song, if you are interested.

Where the other videos on this list are overwhelmingly vibrant or cinematic, 'Ditto' is understated and personal. Arguably one of the most influential k-pop music videos of all time, it breaks every rule of what a music video of this genre looks and feels like, rejecting glamour and high fashion for an unromanticized schoolgirl aesthetic surrounded with melancholy. It's heartfelt and unassumingly tragic, and truly makes the viewer yearn for a time they only half remember. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of cinema I have ever seen, and I am so happy that K-pop stans loved it to death as I did, despite how starkly different it is to most everything in k-pop before it. It does however remind me of f(x)'s '4 Walls' m/v, which isn't a shock as Min Heejin (ew) was their creative director also. It also has vibes of the cult classic (?) Japanese movie 'All About Lily Chou Chou'. It has sparked many trends in the industry, including but not limited to: b-roll interspersions, the typical schoolgirl aesthetic, and the general rejection of the polished, glitzy vibe we expect of k-pop idols. Their impact on trends is notable, but in my opinion, no one has executed this aesthetic to the standard that NewJeans has. The unassuming tragic beauty of 'Ditto' is difficult to put into words, you must go and watch the two music videos for it - they are life changing.

4. 'Kill This Love' - BLACKPINK (YG Ent.)

Say what you will about Blackpink, but they KNOW how to do a music video, and 'Kill This Love' is one of their best; it is beyond extravagant. The sets are huge and striking and insane - Jennie floats on the heads of two enormous swans and all four girls dance in the middle of a huge fucking BEAR TRAP and its ridiculously cool. The fashion and styling is amazing too - my fave looks include Jennie's Lara Croft moment with the braid, Lisa's big ass fur coat from her cereal scene, and Jennie's gorgeous eye makeup from her shopping scene with Lisa. In a word, 'Kill This Love' is extra(vagant). Even the scenes that are conceptually ordinary - Lisa's cereal aisle, Rosé crying in her car - are elevated into the extraordinary. There is no real storyline or through line between the scenes other than their saturated colour palettes and the members themselves, but who cares? The members look like fucking goddesses, the dance looks amazing, and there are MULTIPLE jaw-drop moments throughout the runtime - what more do you want? Where 'Ditto' rejects the typical k-pop visual aesthetics, 'Kill This Love' epitomizes them. If I wanted to explain to western pop stan what k-pop is about, this is the video I would show them first. My favourite scenes include: the group scene with the exploding statues and the bad bitch combat outfits, Rosé caught in the storm with beautiful lighting, and THE BEST SCENE IN A BLACKPINK MUSIC VIDEO EVERRRR... Jisoo's goddess moment with the sun and the reflections. Nobody does music videos quite like Blackpink.

5. 'What Is Love?' - TWICE (JYP Ent.)

This music video is so unbelievably special to me. It doesn't break any boundaries with camera movement, editing, or aspect ratio like 'Why Not?', and it doesn't entirely reinvent the typical k-pop music video like 'Ditto' either, but I think it is one of the best music videos ever because it is so FUN. 'What Is Love' is a music video that is a series of references to iconic movies, most of which being about love, as the title suggests. It harkens back to 'La La Land', 'La Boum', 'Pulp Fiction', 'The Princess Diaries', and many more, with the girls playing the characters, on their fictional discovery of what love truly is. It's so special to me because it reminds me of doing exactly what the girls are doing with my best friends and my big sister - trying to learn what love is from the movies is something almost everyone has experienced, and thus the whole video feels nostalgic both for its references, and for its overall concept. It's fun and lighthearted and a memory of simpler times. Oh, to be a 12 year old obsessed with 'The Princess Diaries' again, to be a tween watching 'Pulp Fiction' with your big sister when it's probably not age appropriate, to be young teen watching 'La La Land' right when it came out. What a time to be alive. That's what 'What Is Love?' is, it's a celebration of life, of growing up, of being just a little naive and knowing it. Iconic, truly.

i tend to disagree with most orbits ideas of loona verse lore (Yves, Jinsoul and Olivia being villains) but I still don't get how vivi died?

The idea of Vivi's death is kind of interesting. I gather most people feel that death is the easiest way to explain her transformation into a cyborg...

You can see here that (an extract from LOONA wiki) that there's a somewhat pervasive view that *someone* killed Vivi and the only way to resurrect her was via cyborg technology. But we never see Vivi killed and there's honestly little reason to infer she was murdered in the first place.

The question of whether being transformed to a cyborg kills you in the process is an interesting one. But I don't think the lore gives an answer to that.

i'm so fascinated by various phenomena in kpop... like for instance there has been a sharp increase recently in the number of girl groups with "lore" ("lore" defined here as a story told through multiple music videos that is the core identity of the group), which is almost definitely bc every manager and their mom wants to try to obtain the global popularity that loona has (loona, in case you didn't know, were actually way unpopular in korea until relatively recently, and they were from a small company, so it's actually incredible that they've become a well known name among english-speakers when other giants like red velvet haven't yet), and the best way they can think of to do that is to emulate loona in style, but not substance. so now every girl group that debuts needs a storyline for their music videos that maybe 5% of their fanbase will pay attention to and which pushes away a decent chunk of potential listeners

Incredibly interested in what loonathehaikyuu is

omggg ok so i ended up getting really sick for a bit and didn't see this. anyways it's just a karasuno loonaverse au!

i'm not going to share any snippets, mostly because i wanna redo the casting, so here's some vague ideas (the loonaverse is also hella chaotic which is the real reason i scrapped this. so this is no plot just vibes)

for those of you who know nothing about loona. the universe is a morbius strip, meaning that there's two sides to one connected loop (morbius strip is an actual thing, i'd look it up cuz it's pretty cool). it's the normal world and the flip side is called eden. eden is restrictive. you can traverse between worlds.

third years are oec! daichi is kim lip (can make copies of herself), suga is jinsoul (can teleport), and asahi is choerry (can travel through mirrors. or something).

1/3 is the second years! ennoshita is heejin (creator of the loonaverse), narita is hyunjin (...a furry? as far as i can tell), kinoshita is haseul (killed her birdself which was bad!), nishinoya is yeojin (went missing), and tanaka is vivi (an android).

yyxy is the first years :) tsukishima is yves (left eden first), yamaguchi is chuu (followed yves out of eden), hinata is gowon (went with yves and chuu to leave eden), and kageyama is olivia hye (was left behind).

since yamaguchi is chuu, yes he almost froze to death and yes he's in love with tsukki.

suga is jinsoul because jinsoul helped olivia leave eden. suga helps kags leave. i had something poetic about suga helping kags as a setter but mmm u get what i mean, right.

tanaka convinces tsukki to leave eden. yamaguchi and hinata are not ones to be left behind (yes this is a tanaka-tsukishima-yamaguchi love triangle with hinata just following them out of eden)

suga and kags probably killed tanaka and that's why he's a robot now.

i have no idea what the 1/3 girlies are doing except heejin's god. so. ennoshita can be god and the rest of the second years can have a good time doing whatever it is normal people do. except noya because he went missing (but that makes sense too right like krsn lost their libero...loona lost yeojin...also yeojin's the fourth girl and noya's number is four. are you picking up what i'm putting down)

hinata has the unenviable task of going back and trying to rescue kageyama and also kinoshita. for that to happen, he is going to have to turn back time. it's cool though because he regrets leaving kageyama in the first place.

The Luminous girl in the wheelchair actually reminded me of some thoughts I had about the Butterfly MV.

There was a girl in Butterfly who has crutches; we see her sitting on a car roof and later she’s standing on the car without her crutches (she’s using them to reference Yves’s golf pose in new). After a bit, I kind of wondered how that was as an inclusion of a disabled woman. Some disabled people have limited mobility but since that leaves them with less energy than an abled person, it is important for them to access walking aids, so I wasn’t sure how I felt about us not seeing her depend on her aids, although now I wonder if I missed a point about us not needing to see her depend on her aids.

Now more than three years later, I watch Luminous MV and I see a girl leaning against a wall (I couldn’t see the wheelchair because of my phone’s light), and she seems kind of unsure and stuck where she is. And then we see her in her wheelchair and at last she’s moving around, spinning on the spot and able to move with the others. What interests me is that some of her movements look like things that you don’t really need your lower body to do but then I remember that if you have limited energy, having some sort of aid can really make a difference.

I don’t really have a grand conclusion here, I’m just interested in hearing other people’s thoughts.

so i’ve been on my atla bs once again, and while rewatching today i got the lovely thought that azula reminded me of a specific kpop idol and spiraled from there. so. here’s my personal list of kpop idols as atla characters!!

jihyo (twice/soloist) as katara

- extremely hard workers who trained for years to get to where they are now

- have natural leadership abilities and are total mom friends

- would cuss someone out if they were very annoyed

- thanks to jeongyeon and her water bottles, jihyo is actually a pro waterbender already (jeongyeon is pakku but without the misogyny. the entire pakku/katara fight is just a compilation every single concert encore where jeong and jihyo bicker)

- i mostly thought of this because heejin and hyunjin are former loona members and good friends. which would make the scene where suki saves toph from drowning even funnier imo

- but also have you SEEN this woman’s muscles??? i have full confidence that heejin could handle her own in a fight

- every sapphic i know who’s seen atla had a crush on suki growing up and every sapphic loona stan i’ve met (which is most loona stans) has had a crush on heejin

- heejin’s lore in loonaverse is basically being a god and i personally equate that to suki

- also, they’re dorks

siyeon (dreamcatcher) as azula

- LITERALLY THE REASON I THOUGHT OF THIS POST (specifically vision era hello???) LOOK AT HER

- siyeon is at the scene of the crime like 90% of the time something chaotic happens in dreamcatcher so i can fully imagine her cosplaying azula and running around with sparklers or something

- she’s also very good at looking evil in mvs so i think she could play azula

- that scene in the deja vu music video right before the last chorus when fire shoots up from behind her? she’s literally a firebender

seonghwa (ateez) as zuko

- i know absolutely NOTHING about ateez aside from a couple of their title tracks but this man looks so much like siyeon i couldn’t resist

- idk i just feel like they’d be good at being the fire disaster siblings

- he also looks like he’d eat up the “the scar is not on the wrong side” line for some reason???

- was probably an angsty teenager at some point

miyeon (gidle) as ty lee

- nobody can out femme either of these two

- cute extroverts who could also be deadly (like imagine x-file miyeon during boiling rock)

- i feel like ty lee would LOVE doing dance challenges with anyone and everyone

bibi (soloist) as mai

- i am fully aware that bibi isn’t an idol but i couldn’t resist

- she just gives the mai vibes honestly. you know that trope where the guard asks the character to hand over all of their weapons and just stands there and stares as said character pulls out knives from everywhere? that is both bibi and mai

- bibi is also the queen of every concept so i fully believe she could probably play the entire cast of atla in a chaotic one-woman show

Loona's Girl Front left Blackpink still looking for love, as they won in Round 1 over Lovesick Girls. Then, they faced off against Red Velvet, proving that winning doesn't always come Automatic in Round 2!

If you were a kpop fan around 2017/18, then the Loona subunits are no stranger to you. Girl Front's impact goes far beyond views, especially with the unique chiptune-esque elements that are rare in Kpop songs!

It was a Rough loss for Gfriend, but Fancy moved ahead in Round 1! Then they swept the floor with Lovelyz's tissues when they beat Ah- choo!

Fancy is Twice's 4th most viewed MV, and one of my personal favorite Kpop songs! I really like how it's fun and upbeat but still has some maturity, and I think the MV fits it really well with the neon visuals and galactic theme! Also, Fancy won the Twice preliminary poll with 25%!

I’m sure this has been mentioned before, but the MV cutting out the Via parts and playing up Blitz being Stolas’s whole world reminded me-

Blitz is a better dad than him. Blitz, with his adopted-at-17 and literally-a-species-that-is-generally-considered-a-pet daughter, is a better dad that Stolas with his own flesh and blood.

Because Blitz minds Loona’s feelings, gives her a spot in his business, rushes to pick her up immediately despite having a shitty night himself… whereas Stolas is constantly getting sidetracked by imp dick and his woe-is-me victim complex.

When Stolas called Blitz for a rescue in Western Energy, what did Blitz do? He passed the job onto his employees and stayed with his daughter, who was going to the doctor and scared to receive her shots. Sure the way it was wedged into the episode for “””comedy””” was pretty mediocre but. The contrast to Stolas losing interest so quickly over his own daughter is still pretty appalling imo.

Absolutely. Blitz isn't a great person but he's an extremely present, loving dad who tries his best to be there for Loona and give her what she needs, even if it's inconvenient for him.

Stolas is there for Via unless he has imp dick on his mind, which is 95% of the time.

i fucking LOVED birth. it feels very much like one for the arts and not for the charts because it's not a typical kpop song or mv, but i love the direction they're going for. it's probably one of my favorite kpop releases so far this year. as far as lore goes, i'm usually terrible with it and let the smart people come up with theories, but i'm assuming the entire concept/narrative will be around reviving - a new start?

But being the only foreigner in the group, there are a lot of unknown secrets before her debut. Everything about her past was supposed to be a secret, tucked away into her own mind palace, and she would do anything to protect her most previous moments in life. But that is all about to change.

After a painful and excruciating annual dinner at BBC, LOONA went back to their infamous loonathedorm and finally catch a break.

Hyunjin is annoying Heejin and begging for her attention, Yeojin is taking selfies with some obscure background she managed to find and Olivia Hye is still picking out cotton from her clothes from that explosion incident. You know, just a normal day in loonathedorm.

Irritated by the noise, Kahei grabbed her phone and locked herself in the toilet to minimize the noise pollution. She took a big breath, and beginning to type on her phone rapidly with her skilled fingers. You would have thought that she texted one of the members to express her frustration pent up the entire day, but you would be wrong.

"Oppa, I'm stressed out again today…"

"Kahei-ya, it's okay to blow some steam out from time to time, 24/7 I'll be there."

"…Cheesy as ever."

And there you are, one of the few male contact in her phone, her secret male-friend that only he knows - Jason. The one true friend that stayed with her all the way from her debut until now.

A smile beamed across Kahei's face. She knows you are always the considerate one, and the funny one too. If only distance is not a problem, you two would probably hangout everyday single day!

Kahei tried to stay calm and made up an excuse.

Suddenly, a strange smirk appeared on Yeojin's face. Yeojin whispered into Kahei's ears.

Kahei's face turn beet red as she cannot believe she got caught red handed.
