“No,” Elide Lochan said firmly. “I will not marry him.”

“Harold is a fine man,” Vernon replied. Not too mention wealthy, which was no doubt why he wanted her to marry him. If she married Harold and he died, then her uncle would try to monopolize on his riches.

“He’s an old man.” Harold was nice enough, but he was eighty years old and missing teeth. “You only want me to marry him so you can have access to his money.”

Her uncle sneered. “You will do as your told, do you understand? You’re my ward and mine to do with as I please.”

And he had resented having to raise her for eleven years. But now that she was nineteen, she wanted to take ownership of her estate. These were her lands, Perranth was her home, and she refused to be sent away, to be forced to marry someone that she didn’t choose for herself.

“Besides, your father left everything to his closest male relative when he and your mother died.” Vernon pointed to himself. “And as his brother, that would be me.”

She shook her head. “I don’t believe you.”

Her uncle reached into the desk and grabbed a letter, waving it in the air. “Do you want to read it for yourself?” he asked cruelly.

Elide’s cheeks heated. He knew that she couldn’t read and was simply taunting her.

Vernon tossed the letter aside and stood. “I’ll arrange for the wedding to happen on the morrow.”

Then he left the room, leaving Elide to ponder her next step.
