shout out to my siblings for being tolkien-nerds because they make it possible for me, a dwj-nerd, to photobomb their lego rivendell set <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
context of dwj's history with tolkien:
"Tolkien was a different matter. He was just a kind of eminence grise and a legend. You couldn’t hear him lecture. He worked at not letting you hear, because he wanted to go away and finish writing The Lord of the Rings. So he had the very smallest lecture room. First of all it was packed out, so he spoke with his back to the audience and mumbling. Unfortunately he was talking about - meditating on, really - what a plot is like and how it mutates into other plots, and this I found so fascinating that I went back the next week as did one other person. And this meant that he couldn’t stop lecturing and still get the money, which apparently in those days you could if no one turned up - it was a dreadful racket, really. He could have given just the one lecture and then been paid for a term if we’d all stayed away."

Ravenna Cloudcaller
What's a story about a medieval castle without a dark sorceress to act as a villain? In my story The Castle by the Stormy Sea, that's the job of Ravenna Cloudcaller.
Tumblr media
Ravenna Cloudcaller is a powerful and feared sorceress who lives in the shadows of Stormwatch Castle. Born into a family of powerful sorcerers, Ravenna was trained in the ways of dark magic from a young age. She quickly surpassed her teachers in skill and power, and soon became one of the most feared and respected sorceresses in the land.
Ravenna is known for her striking beauty and her long, flowing black hair. She is also known for her cold and calculating nature, and her willingness to use any means necessary to achieve her goals. Despite her fearsome reputation, however, Ravenna is also a deeply troubled woman, haunted by the atrocities she has committed in the name of power.
Ravenna's powers are vast and varied, and she is skilled in a wide range of dark magic techniques. She can summon and control the elements, bend others to her will, and create illusions that are all but indistinguishable from reality. She is also an adept shape-shifter, able to take on the form of any creature she wishes.
Ravenna's main goal is to increase her power and influence, and she is not above using whatever means necessary to achieve this end. She has been known to make deals with dark forces and to use her powers to manipulate and control those around her.
Despite her dark and dangerous nature, Ravenna is also a solitary figure, with few true friends or allies. She is a complex and mysterious woman, driven by her own desires and her own sense of purpose.
Ravenna's presence near Stormwatch Castle is a source of concern for Lord Harold and Lady Isabella, they have heard stories of her dark powers and her ambition, they are aware that if Ravenna wants to, she could be a serious threat to the kingdom and its people. They keep a close eye on her movements and actions, trying to anticipate her next move and protect their kingdom from her dark magic.
---
Ravenna came about after I was inspired reading about Dark Feminine Art. Ravenna draws her power from the darkness, even if she is not entirely evil.

could frodo from lord of the rings survive castle dracula🤔
Stephen King I know this is you
This one just makes me sad. Hasn't he suffered enough? It's also surprisingly difficult for me to get a read on it, despite me knowing the character very very well. He's just a little guy...
Frodo is not going to refuse anyone's gifts, and being unexpectedly protected by forgotten gifts is something he's very good at. He also doesn't shave so that's a thing. He does get very very subjected to the Horrors, and all hobbits are remarkably good at enduring hardship, even if they complain about it. Frodo is on the less complainy side of the spectrum, but the more hardship side of the spectrum.
He is plucky and courageous in a pinch. He would go exploring, with probably comparable results, although he may not be able to get into the blocked door. Would the Girlies want him? Well he's not that young but he is extremely baby sized. I think they'd be disappointed because they'd be expecting Delicious Baby and instead get Middle Aged Guy Going Through It. He knows he's not going to be able to oppose Dracula physically or mentally, so he won't get himself killed trying. He already has queer dreams. He already doesn't need shoes.
I think he would have a harder time psychologically in the Castle - Tolkien characters really don't like not being able to see the sun or feel grass between their toes - but an easier time with the Jon-a-Thon if that makes sense? But again he handled the Barrow-Wights (up to a point) and that's a really comparable situation. He keeps his head under extreme pressure, even if he loses his mind a bit. And he does just keep putting one foot in front of the other while all his other faculties fail him.
Based on the escape from the Emyn Muil I am confident Frodo could make it down the wall. He'd probably be happier if he had Sam's rope but again he's used to using his toes for things. He's got the right amount of courage to be making the daring attempts he needs to and the right amount of cowardice to not be eaten by wolves.
I'm ignoring the Ring because I don't think it helps him in this situation (see: Griffin Invisibleman). If anything it just adds to the psychological burden and he's better off without it.
In the final analysis I think Frodo Baggins can survive Castle Dracula, but he'll never be okay again.
Damn you Stephen King, you can't keep getting away with this.
ah NB this analysis is done with respect to Frodo as he appears in the the books. Movie!Frodo is 20 years younger and much more passive a character. I don't know if Movie!Frodo would think to go out the window unprompted, for instance, but I really don't know.
