#lord of the rings genderswap
Text
My husband and I just watched all the extended editions of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings movies. We were discussing how excited we were to read the Hobbit to our future kids, and I mentioned how I wanted to add Tauriel to the story even if she isn't in the books maybe even genderswap a dwarf or two just to add more women into the story. This poll sprang from the philosophical debate that that started. I am gonna do what I want but mostly I wanted to see if anyone else would do something similar.

Why I Ship Johnny/Female V Part 3: V, and You, and Me
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3]
I’ve spent a lot of time in this essay series so far focusing on one half of the pairing. Johnny is fascinating, but he’s only one half of the dynamic. So what about V is interesting? Why does she stand out as a character, in the context of this pairing?
Across different ships, I’ve noticed a consistent pattern. There tends to be one character that the fandom focuses in on to thirst over and one that the fandom imagines themselves being. In this ship, the thirst-character tends to be Johnny, while the self-insert character tends to be V. And that’s not surprising, considering that V is essentially our self-insert into the world of Cyberpunk 2077. It’s also worth noting that people who engage in shipping and transformative fandom tend to be predominantly AFAB, myself included, and it makes sense that when writing sexual stories we’d want a self-insert who has our anatomy.
But fans being AFAB doesn’t usually impact what ships are popular. Shipping is infamously dominated by M/M couples who are, ninety percent of the time, cis. Usually, that impulse to self-insert results in an exaggeration of top-bottom dynamics rather than genderswaps or increased focus on M/F couples.
And the thing about V is, she isn’t just a self-insert. In fandoms focused on open-world RPGs, there tends to be some focus on the player character. However, that focus tends to be limited to the Tumblr-ish, transformative end of fandom. One of my other favourite video game fandoms is The Elder Scrolls. There, people avidly draw and discuss their versions of the protagonists on Tumblr and AO3. But on Reddit and Facebook meme pages, the focus is much more on the other characters, the lore, the worldbuilding.
In this fandom, though? I’ve seen more Vs on Reddit than I have on Tumblr. On Reddit, you’re bombarded with beautiful screenshots of V after V. On Tumblr, there’s tons of new names for V, lovingly thought out backstories and more. And when I see V being shipped with Johnny, V is almost always depicted as female, despite there being an option for a male V and despite the norms of shipping favouring a male V.
So it’s clear that female V inspires more affection than most RPG protagonists. Part of that is to do with Cherami Leigh’s voice acting that I covered in Part 1. But I also think there’s a lot in V’s writing that influences things this way.
CD Projekt Red’s writers are known for focusing on character and plot over worldbuilding in their writing. There’s no, ‘I used to be an adventurer like you...’ in their games, no blank-slate hero or awkward, generic background dialogue. Instead, their other protagonist, Geralt, reacts to chasing after goats and weird children and ancient beings as his own person. The world he inhabits is similarly richly drawn, with even the most bland of background guards discussing gimps and birthdays.
There’s also no black-and-white morality. Even in The Witcher games, their fantasy series, the morality leans much closer to Game of Thrones than The Lord of the Rings. This means that their characters are always three-dimensional. Their first true RPG is actually Cyberpunk 2077. Oh, sure, they’ve done games with rich worlds and lots of sidequests, with skill-trees and moral options, but they’ve always had an authored character, with his own slants and biases. Even when Geralt picks the moral option, he’s likely to be cynical about it, and he always leans towards being a grizzled libertarian who’s Done With This Shit at heart.
Despite their provision of a relatively blank-slate character in this game, this influence lingers on in Cyberpunk 2077. One of the big critiques of the game at launch was that the much-hyped lifepath system felt clunky and didn’t have much of an influence on later gameplay. It’s true that the backstory sacrifices some smoothness of plot and introduction to the world.
But what it gets rid of in those aspects, it makes up for in characterisation. No matter what path you choose, V is never an anonymous prisoner, a mysterious courier or a long-forgotten colonist. She has a clearly defined context, and real roots in the world around her. Even after you move past the prologue, V has the network of people around her you’d expect for someone already embedded in the world. After you’re shot, you don’t just go to some random ripperdoc; you go to Vik, her regular ripperdoc and friend. You don’t get the tarot sidequest from reading an anonymous shard; you get it from Misty. Jackie dating Misty suggests that he introduced V to Misty and Vik. V getting to know them through Jackie feels natural, and just like the kinds of close communal networks that spring up in large cities. Meanwhile, the unique dialogue options for each lifepath keep reminding you that V had a life before you met her.
And that’s true even for the other dialogue options. Here’s a minor, early-game set of dialogue choices from Cyberpunk 2077:
Tumblr media
And here’s a similarly minor, early-game set of dialogue choices from a recent RPG that shares a lot of tonal and thematic similarities with Cyberpunk – The Outer Worlds:
Tumblr media
Notice the difference in attitudes allowed by each set of dialogue options. The player character of The Outer Worlds has the opportunity to respond compassionately, snarkily or lie for their own advantage. Deception is specifically highlighted and controlled by a skill tree, and each dialogue choice has its own tone and flavour. Meanwhile, all of V’s dialogue choices can be interpreted as some kind of attempt at deception. They’re also all written in the same voice. While The Outer Worlds offers matter-of-fact kindness, brevity and colourful imagery, V’s dialogue choices all share sentence fragments, spunkiness, bluntness and emotional volatility. No matter what choices you make, V’s attitude and voice always stays the same.
The way dialogue choices are controlled is also worth examining. There seem to be more choices on the surface in Cyberpunk, but a full half of them are controlled by skill trees. Level V up differently to this YouTuber, and they may not even be available. The skills themselves also betray a lack of choice here. While speech is split into five different skills in The Outer Worlds, and the skill used here is directly named ‘Lie’, in Cyberpunk 2077 the skills are simply named ‘Reflexes’ and ‘Cool’. That’s partially due to differences in RPG mechanics, which is beyond the scope of this essay. But look at the names themselves. While The Outer Worlds singles out deception, and bluntly names it for what it is, Cyberpunk 2077 frames quick thinking and bluffing as simply part of the reactions and social attitudes required to survive in Night City. Even the very names of the game mechanics are coloured by V’s attitudes.
While V’s status as an independent character is coloured by CD Projekt Red’s previous experience, it’s definitely not an accident. They had an entire trailer dedicated to answering the question of who V is. For the question of whether V keeps her own personality to be compelling, V has to have a personality in the first place. And in the Temperance ending, the emotional impact of seeing V as an NPC in cyberspace, as well as the final, long shot of V’s face on the bus, depends on you having built up a relationship with her as a separate character. She’s a fascinating mix of self-insert and defined character, and purely from a writing perspective, breaks a lot of new ground for RPG protagonists.
But back to the subject at hand: shipping. She’s just self-insert enough for you to imagine yourself as part of a heightened reality, as someone blisteringly witty, quick-thinking and intelligent. And feeling competent and confident, whether in the real world or in-game, brings you back into your body and makes you feel confident enough to pursue what brings you pleasure. But V’s also just enough of her own person that you can care for her and want her to be happy. That combination of affection and wish fulfilment is what the best ships are made of.
Another huge part of V’s popularity in the Cyberpunk fandom comes from the way gender, or the lack of it, interacts with her characterisation. Of course, you can make her look and dress however you want; that’s one of the beautiful things about RPG protagonists. But her lines and interactions with other characters, thanks to them having to be voiced by male V as well, are refreshingly gender-neutral. To understand this further, let’s take a look at some concrete examples.
Cyberpunk 2077, particularly during the prologue and Act 1, takes a lot of inspiration from Grand Theft Auto. Fast cars, exciting crimes, the obligatory strippers and prostitutes; they’re all there.
These kinds of gritty, sexualised game worlds have attracted criticism from feminist media analysts for normalising violence against women and normalising extreme violence as the default and desirable way of responding to the world. What I think about these takes would take its own essay to get into. But the part of these critiques I do agree with is this. By having protagonists in these worlds always be hypermasculine cis male protagonists, and by having victims of crimes and sexualised characters always be cis women, these worlds repeatedly and unnecessarily sideline anyone who’s not a cis man from imagining themselves having power and agency.
However, where Cyberpunk 2077 differentiates itself from other examples of these game worlds is its lack of gendered differentiation for its protagonist. Ninety-nine percent of the time throughout the game, male and female V voice exactly the same lines. This means that if you choose to play as female V, female V is characterised exactly the same way as male V.
Let’s take a look at some concrete examples of this. The biggest is V’s relationship with Jackie. It’s rarely that you see a male-female friendship that stays as platonic as this one does in media, and I welcome it. The quest called ‘The Ripperdoc’ demonstrates this, in the conversation when Jackie and V drive to see Vik:
Jackie [with relish]: ...I got a date - me and Misty.
V: You don’t say...
Jackie [confidentially]: She’s soooo sweet. Really gets me, y’know?
Jackie describes his relationship with Misty in respectful terms, and isn’t afraid to detail the emotional aspects of his and Misty’s connection. But he doesn’t hold back on the macho bragging either. In these lines, and especially in the pleased, suggestive tone of the first line, it’s clear he’s proud to be the kind of guy who could date someone like Misty. The presence of both of these attitudes together shows that Jackie both trusts V and considers V a part of his traditional-masculinity-valuing world. It’s less ‘not like other girls’ and more ‘not like other mercs’.
Similarly, while V’s first interactions with Johnny do draw from highly gendered relationship dynamics, the actual content of V’s responses undercut any feminising this would give her. Here’s one exchange from ‘Playing For Time’:
Johnny: The fuck kinda joytoy are you supposed to be?
V: Fuckin’ ghost off!
Johnny calls V a whore. Before and after, he physically hurts her in ways that, in my opinion, have a highly sexual undertone. But the crucial bit is how V responds here. She neither responds in a helpless, damsel-in-distress sort of way, nor in a defiant, sassy heroine way, where she might take the gendered insults and own them or prove them wrong via physical prowess. In fact, she doesn’t react to the gendered aspect of Johnny’s comment at all. Where a game with a Strong Female Character (TM) would use gendered jabs to refocus attention on said character, Cyberpunk blows them off to focus on the reality of this particular character’s situation.
Outside of V’s closest relationships, this gender neutrality can also be seen in the wider world of Night City. Dexter DeShawn is one of the most tropey, Grand Theft Auto-esque characters you meet in the game. As such, he’s one of the best barometers for how gender interacts with the ‘usual’ state of the world. And how does he react to a female V?
The answer is, not at all. He addresses her as ‘Ms V’, but that comes across as less about her and more about him being high up enough in the world that he can afford affectations. Her gender simply isn’t relevant. While this is increasingly common in pop culture, it’s still rare in worldbuilding like this, where gender is all too frequently used as a lens through which to explore violent, chaotic worlds. In a type of world and tone where gender roles are traditionally emphasised , V slips past those roles and is allowed to exist beyond them.
But why does gender neutrality make V more appealing to ship? To answer that fully, it needs to be combined with my next point.
V is also compelling to ship because her characterisation gives a safe platform from which to imagine her being vulnerable. What I mean by that is this. The main aspect of V’s characterisation in canon is her status as a merc. How you experience her life, through gameplay and through the situations she gets into, is through her skills at hacking, sneaking and killing. You don’t just witness her competence, daring and toughness; you share in it.
When writing fiction that focuses on romantic relationships, one of the toughest balances to get right is that of competency and vulnerability. Any good romantic arc involves watching a character’s barriers come down, seeing how they react to the other person when they lay aside their protective pretences. But this can’t happen too soon, or too much, for either the protagonist or the love interest. Competency and assuredness are huge parts of what makes someone attractive, and they’re also huge parts of feeling like you can come out and play, sexually speaking. Even for the biggest submissive on the planet, the submission has to be a deliberate choice to be hot.
Taken together, V’s canonical characterisation and the possibilities and conventions of fandom provide the perfect balance of those two qualities. Canon makes it clear that V is capable and strong. When you or I imagine our Vs with Johnny, that buildup of ‘competence capital’ makes it feel safe enough to imagine V vulnerable.
And that safety is vital when shipping any character with a character like Johnny. This is where the gender neutrality I talked about earlier comes into play. Imagining V vulnerable feels safe. So does imagining V in a dynamic with a guy who’s a tropey bad boy. Because V is written in such a gender-neutral way, it lets the player enjoy all the deliciously dangerous aspects of her relationship with Johnny without the distractions that may come from feeling disempowered. It also refreshes all the clichés of Dangerous Guys, making their impact feel fresh and new again. Her ability to walk the line between wish fulfilment and independent characterisation inspires simultaneous identification with her, affection for her and boosts in confidence for the player.
This is why she’s compelling to ship. Johnny brings in the familiar emotional arcs of classic tropes, while V makes them new. So what happens when you put these two characters together? Just what about the way they bounce off each other has inspired the majority of fic and art in this fandom?
That’s what I’ll talk about next time.

genre: fluff | soulmate!au, genderswap!au pairing: student!mark x female!reader warnings: bad words? word count: 1973 summary: it’s a fact of life that soulmates swap bodies. when mark wakes up in a bed that isn’t his, he’s delighted. you, on the other hand, absolutely despise it. a/n: filler chapter, sorry! and i know it’s been a while since i’ve posted. also, i gave the roommate a name finally.
the sunset filtering through your curtains fills the room with hazy light. it’s soft and golden and comforting, but it does little to placate your roommate. her arms remain crossed over her chest as you pace by the mini-fridge nervously, waiting for this interrogation to end.
“okay, but what did yuta say?” she’s already somehow familiarized herself with the names of the people involved, and while it took some time for her to get used to your new appearance, she currently seems to have grown accustomed to it. you groan, “i told you, yuta likes this whole thing. he just ignored me and then said that i should take mark into consideration.”
“why can’t mark take you into consideration instead?” she retorts. you huff, “i told you this too! mark also thinks i like this whole thing!”
“well? do you?”
you can’t help the hesitation that bubbles up in your throat when you think about the events of earlier. the rapid beating of your heart and the heat in the tips of your ears and the strange familiarity that accompanied each of mark’s words — he felt like a missing puzzle piece, like someone you loved in a past life, and you didn’t like how you unconsciously gravitated towards him as he spoke.
then again, you only saw him for a few hours, so maybe you’re overexaggerating. you shake your head firmly, “i don’t! you know that! i don’t want any of this!”
she gives you an unplaceable look, her eyes filled with contemplation, before groaning and sitting up, “let’s go out to eat. you’ve had a rough day.”
“you’ll pay?”
“yeah,” she sighs, running a hand through her hair, “i don’t want you to confuse the cashier with your credit card info. let’s get out of here.”
it’s a blessing that your roommate has kun. she’s accumulated enough of his clothing that your new body has a decent selection to choose from. though the clothes all fit loosely, you figure tucking your dress shirt into your pants and looping a belt tightly through should make sure your outfit is secure. she stands in the doorway as she watches you change, blushing feverishly when she associates your initial meeting with yuta with the boxers that now hug you snugly.
“where do you feel like eating?”
you hum in thought as you grab a cap, “honestly? kun’s place. he makes such good food.”
she rolls her eyes before dialing her boyfriend’s number on the phone. it rings for a few seconds until the line clicks and you hear a deep voice fill the speaker, “what’s up? you only call at this time when you’re hungry. or horny. or both. please don’t be both.”
“uh, just hungry. also, ____ and i have something we should tell you,” she mumbles, “i’ll be over in five.”
she hangs up before looking over to me and sighing, "i'll do your hair."
as you sit down in front of a mirror and watch your roommate squeeze out a frightening amount of gel onto her palm, you can't help but think about mark again. it's hard not to since his face is the reflection and it shines with a bright optimism that you currently lack. you attempt a half-hearted smile to make his features seem pleasant; it feels wrong when his face frowns.
meanwhile, the girl behind the chair slicks your hair in a neat quiff, sparing a few strands to fall onto your forehead casually. you look handsome, and you're somewhat pleased that kun's first impression of your soulmate will be great on terms of looks.
not that you cared particularly. you don't. you aren't even sure you know what a mark is, much less feel as if others should approve of him.
"there, let's go," she hums, wiping her hands off with a towel and spritzing some floral scent on the two of you before walking out. you follow reluctantly.
kun's apartment is cute and filled with small plants that are groomed to perfection. little canvases with a dramatic ink strokes line the walls above the television and couches, and pens are littered in the corners of every room. there's even a pen tucked into the pocket of the man himself, who is still in the ironed dress shirt he went to work in.
his smile radiates as the two of you walk into the hall, but you can sense the air tension rise, “mina and . . . a friend?”
“ha ha, very funny, kun. you won’t believe who this is,” your roommate grins as you two sit down. kun pauses for a bit before backing into his kitchen, grabbing a spare pan to add on top of the stove, thinking, “uh, a cousin? your long-lost brother? i thought ____ was coming over.”
“exactly,” she huffs before motioning over to you, “meet mark, or better known as ____ in mark’s body.”
kun gasps and points the pan at you accusingly, laughter lacing his voice, “oh my god, you fucking swapped?”
you grin and place a hand to drag the pot down, “i know, it’s crazy.”
“at least he’s cute,” the dimpled boy chuckles, sighing in disbelief. he definitely knew you well.
“agreed,” you smile a bit and your roommate shoots you a short-lived glare before looking at kun, “so we came here to destress from such a horrific event by eating your food.”
“that sounds like a plan . . . ,” he muses, a small smile growing on his face as he takes out cooking oil, “you guys can just chill, and i’ll have something cooked up in ten.”
as soon as you pull your phone out, a notification slides onto a screen. you bite your lip as the social messaging app displays the message of a new follower, and when you hold down for more details, you instantly recognize the handle.
mark. he must've searched you up, and if he's managed to follow you on here, he's probably found all your socials by now. as if on cue, you see three more notifs slide gracefully on your phone, beaming with a new friend request. you aren’t sure if you’re happy or annoyed, or a bit of both, but you hold down and open the app to find a new direct message awaiting your approval.
mark1ee (online): hi! sorry if this is creepy but i figured we’re friends now, so...
good lord. you bite your lips to keep from laughing at his shyness, finding it adorable, and avert your eyes from your phone. mina glares at you quizzically, raising a brow as if to ask what you’re amused at, but you simply shake your head emphatically and begin to type back.
you: how’d you know my last name? there’s probably more than one ____ out there. mark1ee is typing . . .
"here, some cheesy ass lasagna. i put, like, five different kinds of cheese in there, or just whatever was in my fridge.” kun slides two plates to you and your roommate and grabs the nearest chair to sit. he looks at you as you tentatively poke at the stuffing, “i didn’t poison it, you know.”
“shut up, i’m critiquing it!” you laugh as you place a food-filled fork in your mouth, smiling at the instant flavor, “whoa, i forgot how good you are at this.”
he lowers his brows as he smiles, “you mean you forgot my job is in the culinary arts?”
you face downwards as kun strikes up a conversation with your roommate and glance at the notification on your phone. it doesn’t take a moment of hesitation for you to swipe and check mark’s message.
mark1ee (online): i checked the profile pictures. it would be a lot easier to make sure i’m contacting the right person if i had your number ;) you: how smooth. how do i know this is the mark i met earlier today? mark1ee (online): already asking for pics? damn. mark1ee sent a photo mark1ee (online): i forgot that it’s basically just a pic of you lmao :/ now pls send #
you snort and look up to find your roommate and kun staring at you intently. you wave your hand dismissively, "funny meme, sorry."
they give you a strange look before resuming the conversation, and you hide your phone under your leg before digging into the meal before you.
"so, what's going on?"
at the question, yuta sighs as mark walks in, his hand rubbing a towel through his wet hair, "winwin is coming back early. a week early."
"are you not excited?" mark quips. the older male tiredly grins, "i'm excited, believe me. but i'm worried that i won't pay enough attention to your switch."
mark frowns, the wrinkles ruining the feminine face, "i'll be fine. she just sent me her number!"
he takes a seat by yuta and faces the flatscreen in front, his glossy eyes reflecting the bright lights of the video game. yuta glances at his long lashes and soft brows for a moment before resuming the screen, "damn, good job. maybe you have enough game to survive without me."
"wha- fuck you! and you'll still be here!" mark laughs, picking up the other controller.
"i'm running away with winwin, by the way," yuta jokes. he lets mark join the round before pressing the buttons again, "now that you have her number, what are you going to do? ask her on a date?"
mark freezes. he hadn't even thought of what to do, and right now, yuta feels like a personal certified love guru. what a great fucking idea! before he could spend more time admiring yuta's genius, mark drops the controller and sends a new text to you, hoping for a stroke of luck.
he didn't really need luck though. he had literally found his soulmate that morning.
you: wanna go on a date? nctzn (online): how would i get clothes, doof? i'm wearing my roomie's bf's shit now :/ you: well, keep wearing them and i'll buy myself a dress? i don't care what you wear though, i'm not a great dresser.
mark is lying to his new form. he had always considered himself as someone with a good eye for outfits and color coordination. he sighs as the green dot by your profile that signifies your online presence fades away, and he figures he should probably find another way to pass the time while you’re offline. yuta waits expectantly, “well?”
“clothing’s an issue. and i don’t even know where i should take her,” mark grins, “it’s going to feel so weird, like going on a date with myself? trippy.”
“you’ll survive, it’s not like you’re ugly,” yuta sighs as he rolls his eyes with exasperation. mark doesn’t respond. he’s too preoccupied with the idea of you to even process yuta’s words. he’s never felt so giddy about a girl before — even his middle school crushes never got him feeling this jittery. conversation with you flowed so smoothly, and even mark knew how strange it was to feel this way after one conversation.
he’s glad you reciprocate his feelings. everything’s he heard about soulmates seems to be true: you fit him well. mark knows he should be a little more hesitant, but this is finally a dream come true. you’re a dream come true.
you: let’s go on a date tmrw then? nctzn (online): ok why not
mark glances up at the bright orange sky. the sun has only just started to set and the evening barely grazes the warm colors. are you just as happy as he is now? is your head filled with thoughts of him, the same way he can’t stop thinking about you?
mark’s pauses, not sure if he should dare to think his next question, but the idea floats in his head anyway and he turns pink with embarrassment.
yuta turns away, silent.

Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Send me an ask with the title that most intrigues you and interests you and I’ll post a little snippet of it or tell you something about it!
---
I have terrible habits and usually just name my google docs by fandom and then throw everything for that fandom into there, so I’ll include a description of the actual wip
---
mdzs:
I’m cheating because most of these were actually all jumbled together in one big messy google doc but I’m giving them names on the spot now
-hunger games au
-meng shi lives
-nmj kills wrh (this was going to be a fill for a prompt from @madtomedgar I think but I lost the thread of it)
-my doesn’t get caught killing the captain
-lxc has a little murder as a treat
-meng yaos shitty qinghe-gusu road trip adventure
non mdzs:
-critical role unbelievably self indulgent gay wizard angst death/resurrectionfic
-Berserk genderswap
-revastila mastercopy (a seven year old Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic femslash longfic I had a lot of feelings about at the time but which never felt publish-worthy)
-wolf 359 Jacobi fic
-asimov robot novels gay angst nonsense
-The Left Hand of Darkness fix-it fic
-eternal ever growing Lord of the Rings Legolas/Gimli snippets doc
-a long fic I wrote in a burst after binging a terrible TNT show, Falling Skies. the fic is alien/human gay romance and is about being gay and closeted and miserable, and I posted 2/3rds of it before completely losing steam.
-”seivarden wips”: Imperial Radch ideas dump doc, from my yearslong extreme Imperial Radch hyperfixation
original:
-space alien little mermaid
-post robot apocalypse robot/creator story
-space opera Big Project that I never actually work on
-winged lions (that one Big Project I came up with in high school, we all have one...)

I’ve seen a lot of people already tagged so if you haven’t been tagged yet, consider yourself tagged now!

In Way Too Deep
As some of you already know, I get WAY too excited about doing research to make sure my AUs make sense.
This time, I think I might have gone too far.
In Lord of the Rings, Frodo is born in TA 2968. That’s 1368, Shire Reckoning.
I wanted him to be Billa’s [genderswapped Bilbo’s] son instead of her adopted cousin, so I went digging into family trees.
And inheritance law.
And politics.
I’m researching fictional politics. What is this madness?
But it works, okay? It works.
Frodo Baggins becomes Frodo Brandybuck, son of Billa Baggins and Merimac Brandybuck. (In the canon, it’s Merimac’s sister Primula who’s Frodo’s mother, so I appreciate this closeness.)
And because I need to give Billa a reason to stay in the Shire rather than wandering off in search of her True Love (because where’s the fun in this if everyone is actually happy?) I also had all of Old Gerontius Took’s sons disappear or die in 1310, the year of the Fell Winter when the White Wolves crossed the Brandywine and many hobbits died of cold, sickness, and starvation.
In the canon, his eldest daughter Hildigard died young, but in this version she lives, takes on the title of Thain of the Shire and rallies the remaining hobbits to shore up their defenses and drive off the last of the Wolves.
She holds the position for the next 31 years (during which politics stall over rewriting laws for title inheritance, which previously stated a title can only be passed via primogeniture) but never marries and never has children, so when she passes on, they’re forced to Do Something about it.
Without asking Billa about any of this, they decide they’re still going by age, but including women in the line of succession, so Belladonna Took is next in line, but she’s dead, so it goes to her eldest (only) child, Billa Baggins.
And now EVERYONE wants her to marry and have a son RIGHT NOW, and that’s where the Master of Buckland very kindly shuts up the squabbling between the Bagginses and the Tooks about who she should marry and has her (without asking) marry his younger grandson Merimac.
Badda bing, badda boom, Frodo Brandybuck is born in 1348, 20 years prior to his birthday in the canon and old enough to inherit the title of Thain from his mother when he comes of age in 1381, just in time for things to kick off along the correct timeline for The Fellowship. (In canon, his parents died in 1380 and that’s when Bilbo adopted him.)
This has gone on long enough.
I’m going insane.
This is all BACKGROUND INFO no one needs to know.
Someone send help.

Tolkien’s Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is probably a misogynist satire of women's rights campaigner Victoria Sackville-West
Tumblr media
Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is a Lord of the Rings Hobbit, one of the few, rare female characters in that series, and she's a nasty piece of work: a bitter enemy of Frodo and Bilbo, she is mostly depicted trying to either steal their stuff or buy it at deep discounts from them: she ends her days first imprisoned and starved, and then dead shortly after she's sprung.
Meanwhile, Victoria (Vita) Sackville-West was "a successful novelist, poet, and journalist, as well as a prolific letter writer and diarist" who was a contemporary of Tolkien. At the time, she was well known for her public complaints that she was not able to inherit her father's fortune because of sexist English laws (she was also Virginia Woolf's lover and was the inspiration for Woolf's book "Orlando: A Biography").
The supposition that Tolkien satirized Sackville-West comes from historian Dr Karen Carr, who points out that Sackville-West's life and campaign were both widely reported in the papers of the day, and that Sackville-West and Tolkien quite likely knew each other as they traveled in similar circles (Carr: "Tolkien hated people pointing it out. When the most famous inheritance case of your generation is by a woman named Sackville, and then you name the subject of an inheritance case on your novel also Sackville, that’s not a coincidence.")
Carr also says that while the real Sackville-West's life was much more interesting that Lobelia's, "Someone should write LOTR fanfic from Lobelia’s perspective."
That's a bit of a fraught project. Recall that legal threats from the Tolkien estate are the reason you can no longer buy Pat Murphy's outstanding, genderswapped The-Hobbit-in-Space novel, There and Back Again, a feminist masterpiece (though others have made similar efforts since).

Possible Godzilla KOTM AUs
Some ideas for potential AUs I don’t think I’ve seen people doing. Feel free to use them if you like them! They’re mostly for KOTM, but can definitely be tweaked to include other characters/story lines.
Regular Kaiju AUs
Reverse Ghidorah and Rodan are the good guys ; Godzilla and Mothra just want to be tyrannical gods and watch the world burn.
Swap Kaijus and humans are swapped: Godzilla and Mothra are Monarch scientists, "Ghidorah" is an eco-terrorist organization led by three brothers, Rodan is a double agent working for both teams etc... Meanwhile Seriziwa, Mark, Maddie, etc... Are kaijus (either existing species or new ones).
Anthro/Demi-Gods Goji & Co but they're human sized, possibly anthro, living among humans and doing human stuff like grocery shopping and getting 9 to 5 jobs.
Gijinka specific AUs
Cops & Gangsters Godzilla is a cop while Ichi, Ni and San run a prolific crime ring and/or are assassins for hire. Rodan is your local delinquant who thinks he's a crime lord when really, he just sets dumpsters on fire every now and then. Mothra is Goji's partner. (Possible timeline variants: Middle Ages bounty hunter, Old West Sheriff, etc...)
Gang Wars Similar to the previous one, but Godzilla is in a gang himself and the leader of a vigilante groupe trying to take out the three local crime lords (known as the Ghidorah brothers).
Other/Could work for both/Humor AUs
-Genderswap (speaks for itself)
-Prison (bad and naughty aliens get put in jail to atone for their sins)
