This is a little snippet from an unfinished chapter from my fic Charles Xavier's Baby. You don't really need to have read it to understand this ficlet, though I personally think it would be funnier if you did. Just know that the story is inspired by Bridget Jones's Baby, and Charles got knocked up with twins from two different guys :D ---- They’re already halfway through a very nice roast beef dinner before it happens; the slow, dawning realization by both Erik and Logan of the girls’ intentions, inviting their art teacher over for an in-home visit. Charles pretends not to notice the mental alarm bells coming at him from two different directions, merely smiling at Mr. Rogers as he takes a sip of the man’s contribution to the meal; a very fine - and expensive - vintage Bordeaux. Mr. Rogers, Charles notes, seems to have excellent taste in French reds. “Mr. Rogers, you have such exquisite taste. This wine is absolutely delightful.” The man really is ridiculously handsome, and muscular to boot, sweet and well-mannered but with a delightfully dry wit. He’s exactly Charles’ type – and Charles ‘pre-twins’ would have been all over Steve Rogers like a slutty octopus – which only makes Laura and Lorna’s plan all the funnier to a slightly inebriated Charles. “Please call me Steve,” hot art teacher Steve says, as Erik’s mental nudges escalate to urgent pokes, and Logan looks like he’s minutes away from to sticking his claws into that broad, well-defined chest. “Thank you again for the invitation to dinner. It was an absolute delight having the girls in my art class this year.” He’s not surprised at all to hear that they’re well-behaved for him, since it seems they have very specific ideas for what role they want Mr. Rogers to play in all their lives. In a way that makes perfect sense to seven-year-olds just finishing their second year of school, they’ve decided they want a baby brother or sister, and – because they have different fathers – they obviously need to find another father for the new baby too. “You’re very welcome, Steve,” he says, and maybe, just maybe he bites his lips a little as he reaches over to refill the man’s wine glass. “You’re their favorite teacher by far. It’s always ‘Mr. Rogers is so smart’, or ‘Mr. Rogers is so good at painting’ with these two.” Both Lorna and Laura beam at him and then at Steve, their heads turning in perfect synch. Charles doesn’t have the heart to be too upset at their misguided matchmaking, though he’s not looking forward to the conversation they need to have about how they’re definitely not going to be getting a new sibling. (There is no way Charles is going to have another baby, after the insanity of getting impregnated by his ex and his new boyfriend in one pregnancy.) “Mr. Rogers, did you know Daddy is a teacher like you?” Lorna says, a conspiring Laura whispering in her ear. “He’s a Professor of Genetics at the university. And he’s rich and we have lots of expensive art at the house in Westchester. So you have lots in common.”

Steve, bless him, doesn’t see the evil terrors that the twins really are, lulled by their pretty smiles and the perfect manners they pull out whenever it’s convenient. “Oh, really? That’s wonderful. Do you have a favorite period or artist in your collection, Charles?” “Charles doesn’t know a damn thing about art,” Erik snaps rudely, in a way that would normally get him thrown out of Charles’ bed for a week. But handsome, fit, talented, artsy Mr. Rogers is driving him crazy with jealousy, in a way he hasn’t broadcast this loudly to Charles since he was fighting with Logan over the (at the time they thought just one) baby. “Any art he owns came with the house.” Logan, usually the one with the cooler head and more laid-back attitude, also seems rather threatened by the very idea that someone like Steve Rogers even exists. “What’s a guy like you doing teaching little kids art anyway?” he growls. “Logan—” “No, Charles, it’s fine,” Steve says affably, though there’s a glint of something in his eye now that makes him even more attractive. “After I retired from the army, I wanted to do something different; something that gave me a reason to get up in the morning again. And being around the kids, teaching them and watching them grow…it makes me happy and fulfilled like I haven’t felt in a long time.” ‘Pre-twins’ Charles would most definitely be sucking his face by now, which is both an indictment of his past self and weird proof that the girls have the same taste in men as their Daddy. He gazes with admiration at a smiling Steve, which solicits another wave of mental grievances being shouted in his direction. Stop flirting with him, Charles! Who invited this guy? Why is he even here? If you’re trying to get back at me for proposing again you are way out of line! Between the wine and Erik and Logan’s incessant complaints, it’s no wonder that Charles misses Lorna turning determinedly to Steve and promptly blowing the entire evening to smithereens. “Mr. Rogers,” she says, smiling her dimpled smile at an indulgent, if slightly puzzled Steve, “would you like to have a baby with Daddy?” Charles absolutely does not dump his entire glass of wine down the front of his shirt.

Polaris: Explains a lot, doesn't it?] Unstable Powered Woman: She was in Genosha the day that Cassandra Nova launched a genocidal attack that killed nearly every mutant in the nation. This was the original start of her personality becoming unhinged. Later, when her long-time Love Interest Havok decided to leave her at the wedding altar to be with a woman whom he just met, she went completely off the deep end, adopted a costume similar to her father Magneto and attempted to murder everyone there.

Written for this kink meme prompt: Raven is tired of the boys going off to play chess (if they're even playing chess!) and pulls out a load of board games from one of the closets in the mansion. Summary: There are a lot of things that Erik loves about Charles. He loves all of the obvious things; Charles’s kindness, his intelligence, his laughter, his eyes. He also loves the little private things; the way Charles sneaks Erik his unwanted tomatoes, his warbled opera singing in the shower, that sensitive spot on his hip.

And he loves the silly things about Charles, especially the way the man has a habit of talking to inanimate objects when he thinks no one is looking. Charles has conversations with the kettle, the washing machine, and their roomba – and every time Erik eavesdrops on him, he falls in love with the man a little bit more.

I loathe fandom magnet fam. 😒😒😒 So much of it is like watching an episode of the Simpsons. Like a bad sitcom. (via @hellspeed )

I’m putting this it’s own separate post because wow do I have things to say about Fanon Magnet Family. It’s not imo as bad as Fanon Bat Family but it has it’s very terrible takes and I want to rant about it.

1. Lorna is Daddy’s Little Girl.

Disgusting. This imo has 100% has to do with Wolverine & the X-Men cartoon that features this very Princess in Need of rescue Lorna and her father the King of Mutants. Lorna was confirmed to be Magneto’s daughter in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #431. That’s literally DECADES after her first appearance. The way Fandom has reduced her to being Magneto’s daughter and not her own character annoys me. However I will ask @salarta who knows way more about Lorna than I do to weigh in on this if they want.

2. Wanda is the good twin, Pietro is the bad twin.

Every time I see this, I literally want to rage. Like fuck that, you can’t just label one as good and the other as bad. I love Wanda with all my heart but she is just as flawed as Pietro and isn’t perfect.

3. Wanda is oppressed by her twin brother!

I will BURN every single copy of that Scarlet Witch Solo. I literally hate how writers constantly use Pietro in a creepy overprotective misogynistic writing so that Wanda can have her “GIRLBOSS” moment for standing up for herself. Did you all forgot it was literally Pietro doing whatever his sister wanted to do? He wanted to leave the Brotherhood before her but stayed because Wanda felt she owed Magneto for him saving her.

4. The Wanda only stans.

Listen, I do not say this much but those fans who are ONLY here for Wanda and constantly reduce Pietro to that trope in no. 3. I do not interact with them at all. I get you might have a favored character but Pietro & Wanda are a set. Do not separate. You either love both or you aren’t allowed to have any takes on them.

5. Magneto was right.

No, the fuck he was not. Magneto is a man with a shit ton of issues and he isn’t right about everything and it’s so fucking annoying to see fans think Magneto can do nothing wrong. I love a character doing war crimes as much as the next person but honestly, Magneto killed his own son. Magneto murdered people. Pietro has the right to not forgive Magneto for a ton of stuff and yet it’s always handwaved away with “Magneto was Right”.

6. Pietro is in love with his twin sister

Can we NOT make this into incest? Can we please for ONCE acknowledge the fact that platonic/family/friend relationships can be JUST as emotional and devastating as romantic ones? Thankfully this seems to have died down in recent years but I literally hate how Ultimates made it a thing just to be edgy and fans went with it.

7. The Happy Family

God, what comics have you been reading? They are so messy and dysfunctional and I love that. I understand wanting fluff fics and arts and I die over them too but like, it really puts me off to have this weird “everyone is happy, and Cherik is main ship” pop up into literally any Magnet Family stuff.

At this point I know there is more fanon out there that I dislike but I can’t remember because I’m mentally spent, but I want to ask @esteicy-blog @teal-bandit @allwillbeone and anyone else to add more if they want.

My thoughts on the final season of Orange is the New Black:

Obviously, some heavy spoilers below:

If you ask me, Piper’s storyline outside Litchfield was, for the most part, a complete waste of time. Instead of having her getting stoned with her brother or going to that pointless retreat, why didn’t they have her doing something productive like helping other former inmates or writing her book?

Speaking of the book, I’m high-key disappointed they gave the memoir storyline to Judy fucking King. Call me cheesy but I was looking forward to the show ending with Piper writing her book just like she said she would in season 6. Such a missed opportunity.

I really, really wanted Taystee to be cleared of Piscatella’s murder. I don’t understand why they gave so much importance to Suzanne writting what really happened and Taystee showing the text to her lawyer if it wasn’t going to make a difference in the end. Chekhov’s gun, anyone?

I’m so relieved she didn’t kill herself. I guess as long as there’s life there’s hope fucking Cindy will confess the truth and justice will be served. In the meantime, I was happy Taystee found a new meaning to her life and decided to help other inmates have a better shot at rebuilding their lives after prison.

Daddy’s death caught me by surprise. That said, I didn’t notice her absence at all for the reminder of the season. I guess she was a one-hit wonder character.

I have the feeling they had no idea what to do with Frieda so they just had her do weird stuff like accumulating trash.

Thank Christ they got rid of Badison so early in the season. Cringiest, most annoying character in the history of television.

Aleida is so stupid lmao. I get she wanted to protect her daughter from that pedophile but she fucked up. I was rooting for her to rebuild her life and I was disappointed at her.

I liked Suzanne coming to terms with her sentence and being more comfortable around people and making new friends. It’s what she deserves.

Why is Cesar out of jail? Didn’t Aleida say he was supposed to stay there until he was an old man?

So Yadriel isn’t Pepa’s biological father?

Shani, man. Her relationship with Nicky was so cute and you could tell she was different from Nicky’s other flings. She didn’t act like a stallion around her, she was sweet and considerate with her and her backstory was very sad. I’m pissed they weren’t endgame because they made such a good couple.

There was no need to kill off Lorna’s baby. That was unnecessary roughness.

What happened to Maritza left me devastated. That final sequence of her getting into the plane and all the other women who were deported as well slowly disappearing until there was no one left gave me fucking chills. It was tough to watch but it had to be done to make a point of how a good portion of the immigrants who get deported are young adults who have never lived anywhere else besides the US, but still they are not considered citizens.

I absolutely adore Fig. Her character development was one of the best in the show. Also I LOVE HER RELATIONSHIP WITH CAPUTO OMG.

Piper’s sister-in-law is annoying af. I bet she is one of those anti-vaccinations freaks.

Alex looked so damn hot in her flashback oh my god.

Goodall is adorable! For real, what a gorgeous baby.

I was not expecting CO Fischer to make a comeback.

Healy is still a piece of shit.

I can understand why Piper developed feelings for Zelda. She represented the potential life she could lead now that she was a free woman, the opportunity to start over and leave prison behind (like Sophia advised her to). However, there wasn’t anything exciting about being with her, it was way too safe and that’s the exact opposite of what she had with Alex.

Polly is even more annoying than she was before but Larry didn’t get on my nerves this time around, which surprised me. Maybe because his little prep talk is what pushed Piper to follow Alex to Ohio or maybe it was the nostalgia. Idk, but they brought him back in a nice way.

I felt really bad for Vinnie. He wasn’t only grieving for his son but he also had to see Lorna fall into that complete state of denial.

Sophia’s comeback was everything. She looked like a goddess and she seemed so happy and in control of her life. I thought we wouldn’t see her again after she got released from prison but I’m glad they managed to bring her back even for a couple of scenes.

Totally random statement but Piper looked very attractive at the benefit gala and the morning after. I don’t know if it was the hair or the way they did her eyes but she was smoking hot.

Danielle Brooks is the best actress in the show. Don’t @ me.

McCullough is the archetype of the psycho ex. I legit thought she was going to shoot Piper when she confronted her at her house.

Alex knows Piper so damn well. She is aware of the fact that Piper tends to run away from stuff when things get complicated and her choosing to have an affair with McCullough was her way to try to protect herself. Then again, I really thought they had moved on from that phase.

Fig lying about being pregnant to help that woman get an abortion was such a strong moment. Also her calling out the double-standard of the guard who was opposed to the woman aborting but wanted her to get deported? Legends only.

Lorna is such a racist but I can’t bring myself to dislike her. If anything I’ve always felt a bit sorry for her.

Linda is such a bitch.

Tamika was the only warden who actually cared about making a difference. I’m sad she got fired because of something that wasn’t even her fault but her good deeds made a profound impact.

McCullough is so damn unstable but I can’t blame her for developing such strong feelings for Alex. She’s quite irresistible.

Alex acting all unattached and cold as she was breaking up with Piper was painful to watch. I knew it wasn’t real but for a hot second I thought that was it for them.

The ICE storyline was out-of-this-world amazing. So powerful and brilliantly done, quintessential OITNB.

If you had told me six years ago I would cry like a baby with Pennsatucky’s death I would have laughed at you.

But for real, POOR PENNSATUCKY. I’m sorry she had to die for Taystee to stay alive.

Because of the ‘a fan-favorite character dies in the final episode to mark the end of the show’ trope I had the feeling they were going to kill either Red, Alex or Taystee. I was legit surprised when the final death was revealed to be Pennsatucky.

That Poussey flashback had me in tears.

Alex and Nicky’s goodbye scene was so sweet and I love they talked about eventually reuniting. They were my brotp.

What Larry told Piper when she visited him at his place was very interesting. When Piper told him she loved Alex he told her he believed her, but that he also thought she loved what Alex represented. I believe that was true at some point—well, for most of the series—and, unconsciously, Piper believed that as well. But, if anything, what they went through in season 7 helped Piper realize she did want to be with Alex. The extra limb analogy was amazing and I don’t think Jenji could have picked a better way to explain their relationship.

Hellman is the new warden? Gross.

My favorite part about the old inmates’ cameos was that they were shown doing the same stuff they did in Litchfield: Boo being tired of everyone’s bullshit, Yoga giving the mandala talk to new inmates, Gina feeling exasperated and Norma calming her down, Watson running and Alison checking her time, Angie and Leanne being stupid, Brook mooning over stuff.

I only missed two characters making a cameo: Sister Ingalls and Miss Claudette. I know most fans wanted to see Bennett again but fuck that coward.

Also wtf happened to Bayley? I kinda wanted to know.

Karla’s story broke my heart. I’m glad they included her character because her story is the story of millions of immigrants that are separated from their children, forced to return to their home countries and endure harsh conditions while trying to make their way back to the US.

Blanca really went out there and said “fuck it” to the american dream, didn’t she? In my opinion she had the best ending out of all the characters. I’m so happy she reunited with Diablo and is ready to live her life with him at last. My girl deserved it.

Maria’s storyline was so ‘meh’. It was way too similar to her season 6 storyline.

My mom Gloria had the second best ending. I was afraid they were going to punish her because of the phone thing but thankfully asshole Luschek finally did something right. I was rooting for her to have a happy ending and I’m glad she got it.

Also was that little girl living with Gloria and her kids her granddaughter? Because she was definitely younger than her sons but Gloria’s flashback stated her daughters are older, so I’m confused.

I really need to know if Aleida killed Daya. I hate it was left so open.

Flaca choosing to help immigrants was so sweet. I bet one of the reasons she did it was to stop them from suffering Maritza’s fate.

Fig and Caputo are adopting!

Cindy did not deserve a good ending after she ruined Taystee’s life. That made me so angry. I was really hoping she would confess the truth.

In the end, McCullough made Alex a favor by having her transferred to Ohio. She went back to minimum security, she was with friends and people she knew and far away from all the crap in max.

What happened to Red and Lorna was devastating. Red losing her identity and her memory was so tragic because of what a badass she was. Also I knew Lorna would lose it after her son’s death but it was heartbreaking. They deserved better.

It sucks balls Nicky lost every person who was important to her but despite that I liked her ending because, even though she suffered heartbreak after heartbreak, she found a way to keep herself sober and now she will help others the way Red helped her. It was the best way she could honor her.

Despite literally everyone around Piper advising her to leave Alex behind and forget about her (from her parole officer to her dad to Larry to Sophia) the fact that she chose to follow Alex to Ohio was a pleasant surprise to me. It showed her growth and how much she really wanted to be with Alex, and that she was not a mistake in her life but her life. I was never a Vauseman shipper but even I knew they had to be endgame, any other ending wouldn’t have made any sense. I feel bad for the shippers because it was a very tough season for them but love prevailed, so congrats.

I didn’t catch the Piper Kerman cameo until I saw someone mentioned it on twitter. That was so cool! Also I don’t know if this was intentional but I liked the visual parallel between Larry Smith & Piper and Piper Kerman & Alex. Larry waited for Piper for as long as she was in jail and never abandoned her, so I choose to believe Kenji and Co. are hinting at Piper doing the same thing for Alex.

It was a good decision to show us a glimpse of Piper’s new life. She has a stable job, a new home, she is studying about criminal law and using her time in a productive way, and also she looks happier than we ever saw her.

In conclusion, I liked the season very much. Orange is one of my favorite shows and I think they ended it in a very nice way. It was very well executed and, unlike other final seasons I have watched over the years, it never felt rushed to me. It was the best season in at least a couple of years and I’m in love with the series finale, I stand by my original statement that it is the best one I have ever seen.

I give it a solid B+, four-out-of-five stars, 8.5 out of 10.

Orange forever, indeed.

Sleeping Beauty

@gold-from-straw won a fic from me for her participation in the Star Bright Release Party (currently on Week 3!). It was supposed to be 1k... it’s almost 3k, because I can’t write short things. Hopefully that’s a feature instead of a bug. Also posted on AO3 here.

The chosen prompt: “I thought you said you weren’t dead.” “I’m not! ...exactly.”

It wasn't like Charles to stand him up. They'd only been dating three months, and didn't get to see each other as much as Erik would like, both being busy with work and children—Erik only had Lorna on Wednesdays and weekends, but that was more disruptive in some ways than having her all the time, and in Charles's case, as a mutant-specialist social worker and emergency foster father, the children were his work. Still, ever since the day they met—when Erik fell into the pool where Charles was doing physical therapy and nearly drowned them both—they had made time for each other. So for Charles to miss their standing Friday night dinner at Erik's house, without so much as an apologetic text, was worrisome.

Erik texted three times, and called twice. By then worry was transmuting to anger. Charles said Erik's go-to emotion was anger because it was easier than being afraid. Maybe he was right, because Erik was in a towering temper by the time the second call went unanswered. He left an expletive-laced voicemail that he immediately regretted, and tried to remember if he had Charles's sister somewhere in his contacts. She lived on the opposite coast but maybe she'd know something…

He didn't have Raven's number, but they were Facebook friends. He sent her a message there. No answer. Well, if it was nine o'clock here in New York, it had to be, what, midnight in L.A.? Or did the three hours go the other way? In which case she was probably in the middle of dinner.

Whatever. Erik tossed his phone on the counter and started putting away the uneaten meal he'd cooked. He wasn't hungry.

Erik?

"Charles!" Erik shouted, catching the pasta pot with his powers when his hands let go of it. "Where are you? Damn it, are you dead?"

No, I'm not dead. Charles's mental voice sounded chagrined, as well as distant and strained. But I need you to come get me. I'm sorry.

"Where are you?"

The hospital.

When he arrived at the hospital, Erik followed the sound of Charles's telepathic voice—stronger now that he was closer—up elevators and down hallways. No one stopped or questioned him, and he wondered if that was also Charles's doing. But why would Charles need to sneak him in? Why did he lead Erik through the maze to his room, instead of meeting him in the lobby? Wasn't he being released? He'd said he needed Erik to come get him…

Finally he spotted the right room number, and rounded the doorframe to step inside.

There was Charles, pale and completely motionless in the bed. His eyes were closed, and most of the lines on the nearby monitor were flat.

"I thought you said you weren't dead," Erik said, anger rising to meet a spike of panic.

I'm not! …exactly.

"What?" Bewildered and annoyed, Erik examined the monitor more closely. Charles did have a heartbeat after all. But that seemed to be about all he had. Were those other flat lines supposed to be brainwaves?

They're saying I'm brain-dead, which is obviously untrue, Charles said with asperity. I'm still here! I just can't get them to hear me, mostly. Only enough to keep them from unplugging me.

"What do you want me to do?" Erik was appalled to realize his eyes were wet. He picked up Charles's pale, lifeless hand. "You said to come get you. Are you expecting me to steal your body or something?" It was utterly absurd and he wouldn't do it, he thought, even as he eyed the steel frame on the window and calculated whether Charles's hospital bed would fit through it.

Nothing that dramatic as yet. I was exaggerating a bit about the unplugging—they wouldn't do that until they get hold of Raven. My body's safe enough for now. It's me, the rest of me, that needs to get out of the hospital.

"I don't understand."

Turn around, will you?

Frowning, Erik did—and saw Charles, leaning against the opposite wall. He met Erik's eyes, smiling sheepishly, and waved.

My psyche is rather naked, walking around outside my body like this, he said, and all the pain and fear and so on is really getting to me. His mouth didn't move with the words, and his body was noticeably transparent. I haven't been able to leave on my own, but I'm hoping if I can anchor myself to your mind, it will let me get further away from my body. Your house is still within the range of my telepathy from here, after all.

"No wheelchair," Erik noted, which seemed a less inane thing to say than Are you a ghost?, which had been his first instinct.

Yes, that's interesting, isn't it? Charles looked down at himself, wiggling his transparent legs. But it makes sense. The wheelchair is a body thing. You're lucky I figured out how to imagine myself some clothes.

Erik couldn't help smirking. "Am I? I don't call that luck."

Charles snorted at him, eyes twinkling. Just get me out of here so we can figure out how to wake me up.

Charles's plan worked; after resting his insubstantial hand against Erik's temple for several seconds of hard focus, he was able to walk out of the hospital at Erik's side, and get into the passenger seat of his car (without having to open the door). It was all surreal beyond words—My boyfriend is in a coma and I'm helping his not-quite-ghost escape the hospital; I'm gonna laugh my head off when I wake up from this dream—but at least it did seem to help Charles. He relaxed bonelessly against the seat (that he wasn't actually touching) and rubbed his temples as they pulled away from the hospital.

"Charles, what even happened?" Erik asked. "How did you get hurt?"

Lost control of the chair going down a steep ramp, rolled right out in front of a car.

The mental image left Erik sick and breathless. "You could have been killed. You could still…"

Charles reached out and laid one transparent hand over Erik's. He could feel it, almost, like a dream or the memory of a sensation. There's no reason to panic. I'm still here, and I'm still tied to my body in some way—that's why I couldn't get too far from it without anchoring to someone else. Raven won't let them unplug me; I'll probably be able to talk to her just as I'm talking to you. Remembered desperation lurked under his smile. You've no idea what a relief it was to make contact with you, when I couldn't get the doctors to hear me, except for a distant feeling that I might not be as gone as I looked.

"I'm just glad I hadn't gone to bed yet," Erik said. "Did you try, I don't know, laying back down in your body?"

I did, and several other things besides. It's hard to explain, but I can't get it to feel like mine, like part of me.

Erik tried to tighten his hand around Charles's. "We'll figure something out."

When they pulled into Erik's driveway, he was startled to find another car already there. Suzanne's, with Lorna's little green head visible in her car seat.

"What… I'm not supposed to pick her up until morning! Did I forget some change to the schedule…?"

I don't think so, Charles said. Suzanne's upset about something, but not at you. She's feeling very apologetic toward you.

Erik climbed out of the car, tentatively alarmed, and found Suzanne already coming around her car toward him.

"I was just about to use my key and come wake you up," she said. "Should have realized you were out, no car… I'm sorry, Erik, I'm all over the place." Her mascara was streaked, her hands shaky.

"What's wrong? Is Lorna okay?"

"Lorna's fine. It's my mom, she's taken a turn for the worse. I don't know if you knew she had another stroke a few days ago?"

"Oh." He grimaced in sympathy. "I'm so sorry."

"Do you mind taking Lorna a little early? I know it's last-minute, I'm really sorry, but I've got to hit the road—I could take her with me, but she's barely met my mom, I think she'd mostly just be frightened and confused—"

"Of course, of course I'll take her, no problem. And I'll keep her as long as you need." Erik never minded getting more time with his two-year-old daughter. "This is tough, Suzanne, I'm so sorry." Should he offer a hug? He and Suzanne were amicable, but not really close... and he admitted it felt weird to hug his ex with his boyfriend watching.

No hug, she'll fall apart if you do, Charles whispered in his head, and then somehow communicated a sheepish expression at Erik's half-formed censure about Suzanne's privacy. I don't have much in the way of shields in this form, sorry.

"You're the best, Erik," Suzanne was saying, and turned to open the side door of the car. "C'mon, princess, time to go inside with daddy!"

"Daddy!" squealed the little girl in the car seat, and began kicking and reaching for him while Suzanne tried to unbuckle her.

"And here's her bag, do you want me to carry it in?" Suzanne said when Erik had Lorna snuggled against his shoulder.

"I've got it," Erik said, latching onto the metal rings holding the strap on the duffle bag. The bag floated out of Suzanne's grasp toward the front door. "Drive safe, Suzanne. You're getting a really late start."

"I know." She kissed Lorna's brow. "See you in a few days, baby!"

Well accustomed to trading one parent for the other, Lorna cheerfully waved goodbye as her mother drove away.

"Well this is… timing," Erik said, as Charles appeared at his elbow. "Can Lorna see you?"

I don't think so. Lorna, love? Hello! He waggled his fingers in front of Lorna's face. No response. I guess it's only people I'm strongly connected to that can see me like this. At least I hope it is, and not just you for some reason.

"I'll explain to Raven, if I have to," Erik said, opening the front door with his powers and floating the duffle ahead of them. And if Raven—against all odds, really, knowing her brother was a telepath—didn't believe him, he'd see about levering that hospital bed and all its important equipment out the window after all.

Charles smiled and leaned an insubstantial head against his shoulder. You're sweet.

"Not a lot of people say that."

They don't know you like I do.

"No, they don't." Erik had to stop and look at Charles, feeling an almost involuntary smile on his lips. No one knew him like Charles—or at least, no one saw him the way Charles did, as a good man with a good heart. Erik's coworkers hated him, his clients tolerated him, Suzanne in her heart was afraid of him.

Lorna loves you, Charles pointed out, looking saddened by the direction Erik's thoughts had taken. Lorna adores you.

"She's too young to know any better."

Children are often wiser than any of us.

"Well," Erik said, horribly certain he was blushing, "this child is way past her bedtime. Did mommy already brush your teeth, sweetie?" Lorna was already wearing pajamas—green, her favorite color, to match her hair. Erik had to hand Suzanne this much; she had never hinted at rejecting her mutant daughter, though Erik had seen how quickly that could change if her powers turned out to be something dangerous.

Lorna, leaning sleepily against Erik's shoulder, nodded her head. "Brushed teef. Had stories. More stories?"

"Sure, why not. More stories." The poor mite deserved some kind of treat after being pulled from her bed and dragged across town without warning.

Erik carried Lorna to her bedroom and settled them into the rocking chair next to her crib. She was big enough for a toddler bed, Erik just hadn't gotten around to getting one. She'd grown so much, so quickly…

It's astonishing how quickly they grow up, Charles agreed, watching Lorna with a wistful smile. It was no secret that Charles wanted children of his own, even after spending all his working hours with them. Erik wondered if he'd ever tried to adopt any of his cases, perhaps one of the ones where he ended up serving as emergency foster care. Wondered if he'd have more luck with adoption, if he were married…

There was still a book next to the rocking chair from Lorna's last visit, a storybook version of Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Erik picked it up and began to read.

Charles knew he couldn't actually sit anyway, but it felt awkward to 'stand' around the room while Erik read to his daughter. There weren't any more chairs, but he finally settled onto Lorna's toddler-size play table; the weight of his body would have collapsed it, but his body wasn't here. He 'sat,' and watched Erik read to his sleepy daughter.

Charles thought Lorna was adorable, but he hadn't spent much time with her. He and Erik had only been dating three months, and Erik wasn't going to bring someone into his daughter's life until he was sure that person deserved to be there, and planned to stick around. Because Erik was a good father. A good man.

Charles didn't see Erik through rose-colored glasses, whatever other people or Erik himself thought. He knew that Erik could be downright mean, that anger was his go-to emotion, that his view of the world was harsh and painfully cynical. But he also knew how much good Erik's heart held, how much passionate protective love that only needed somewhere to land, some beneficiary he could trust not to reject him. Erik would fight for every version of his people—mutant, Jewish, queer—but that was a cause, not a family. And Erik would die without hesitation for Lorna, but she was someone he had to protect, not someone he could lean on. He needed a partner.

Charles wanted to be that partner. He wanted to be the stable center of Erik's erratic orbit, a source of love and joy and certainty, a second father to Erik's little girl. Part of a family. He really didn't want to be dead.

"Prince Phillip rushed to Aurora's side," Erik was murmuring to Lorna, "and bestowed a gentle kiss—True Love's Kiss—on her lips. Aurora's eyes fluttered open. The curse had been broken!"

A kiss sounded wonderful, Charles thought. If he had his body here, he could climb into Erik's warm, cozy lap and press kisses all over Erik's tired, scruffy, beautiful face. Erik was a very good kisser and Charles could imagine—

Oh. Huh. How about that.

Distracted by Charles's sudden distraction, Erik looked up from the storybook, but Charles waved him off. He needed to figure out what had just happened before talking to Erik about it.

He had felt something, just now. Felt his body, distant as it was, respond in some tiny, flickering measure to the thought of kissing Erik. Which was more than any other thought had been able to do.

Erik, he said, a few minutes later, when Lorna was asleep in her crib and Erik was closing the bedroom door behind them. I have an idea.

Erik brought over a neighbor that had watched Lorna before, with the promise that he wouldn't be gone long and she was asleep anyway.

"My boyfriend's been hurt," he said. "I need to go to the hospital."

"That nice young man? Oh, dear, I hope he's all right," the neighbor said with sleepy concern. "Don't worry a bit, dear, I'll just read in your living room and keep an ear open for Lorna."

There's no need to get yourself a ticket, darling, I'm not going anywhere, Charles said as Erik's car sped toward the hospital. When this failed to have any effect, he laid a transparent hand on Erik's knee. Please? Getting yourself killed in a wreck right now would be terribly inconvenient for me. Do let's wake me up first.

Erik rolled his eyes, but lifted his foot from the accelerator.

Like last time, Charles was able to keep anyone at the hospital from stopping Erik, and guide him to the right room, following the beacon of his tenuous connection to his own body.

"Sleeping Beauty, huh?" Erik said, looking down at the still figure in the bed. "You look more like Snow White."

My lips aren't that red, Charles said, embarrassed by Erik's mental image of him, which was at least three times as attractive as reality. Not now, certainly. Skin white as snow I will grant you.

"Yeah, you don't look very good right now," Erik said, brushing his fingers down the sickly-pale cheek of Charles's body. He glanced up at the telepathic projection of Charles's appearance. "You sure about this?"

Not at all, but it can't hurt to try.

Erik looked down at Charles in the bed, still stroking his cheek, then bent and kissed him.

And Charles felt it—felt all his nerve endings lighting up at the sensation, felt the pull of his body's response to being touched. Not his body—him. He was being touched, Erik was kissing him, Charles wanted to kiss him back, and—

And he was, he was kissing Erik back.

Erik pulled back with a gasp, and Charles was looking up at him now, looking up from the bed. He was inside his body, which felt terrible, bruised and battered and broken, his head aching fiercely—but he was awake, and all the monitors next to his bed were going crazy.

"True Love's Kiss," Charles said, smiling, and pulled Erik down to kiss him some more, just as a bevy of nurses hurried in to witness the miracle.
