¿me escuchas?
¿me escuchas todavía?
¿te recuerda
el aire?
oh aliento de la mañana
canción nocturna canción matutina
tengo
todo lo que no conozco
no he perdido nada
aunque ahora sé que no debo
preguntarte
en dónde aprendiste esa música
de dónde vino
alguna vez hubieron leones en China
escucharé hasta que la flauta se detenga
y la luz envejezca otra vez
W.S. Merwin. 2009. “The Nomad Flute”, en _The Shadow of Sirius_. Washington: Copper Canyon Press. p.5.

The Spanish colonial style castle called Castillo de Lago was built by oil baron Patrick Longden in Beachwood Canyon in 1926.  It was designed by Architect John DeLario, the primary architect of the original Hollywoodland tract.  At various times in its history, Castillo del Lago has been vacant, a white elephant during the Depression and beyond. Older adults who grew up in Beachwood tell stories of using it as a neighborhood clubhouse, entering through unlocked doors to play in the tower and on the stairs. *
More famously was later the home to mobster Bugsy Siegel who may have turned the castle into a speakeasy.  When Madonna bought the place in the 1993, she undertook a renovation that cost $3 million and transformed the house from Spanish Colonial to Italianate.
In 1997, Madonna sold Castillo del Lago at a huge loss to Joe Pytka, the commercial director and restaurant owner. Now owned by fashion designer Leon Max, Madonna's cream-and-red striped color scheme is gone, but the “deep sense of foreboding” noticed by many visitors remains.
The exemption was a gaping loophole—and an extraordinary growth opportunity for high-end real estate. For all the new fastidiousness of the financial system, foreigners could still buy penthouse apartments or mansions anonymously and with ease, by hiding behind shell companies set up in states such as Delaware and Nevada.

2019
Hello,
Missed me?
No longer a monthly mailer – just another end of year round up.
On reflection, perhaps I’ve played it a bit safe this year, but I didn’t feel there was as much great music out there as in previous years.
Yes, I too use Google, so I have listened to all the end of year Best Of lists online, and so those artists not included just didn’t resonate with me this year.
I maintain ‘bad guy’ off Billie Eilish’s record sounds like a Super Mario bonus level (probably in a spooky dungeon)… which I suppose isn’t a bad thing. And I love Lana, but I just didn’t think the latest record was all that. And the same was true of Angel Olsen, Nick Cave, Kanye, Hot Chip… but don’t get me started on Bon Iver: avant-garde “Kum ba yah” at best (sorry Rob).
But then that’s part of the joy of music, variety and differing opinions… so please share yours! What have I overlooked? What should be revisited? Where in the depths of streaming services is that killer track from 2019?
For now, here is my list of songs, somewhat crowbarred into the monthly format (as mentioned, this email was once called New Music Monthly Mailer with five tracks a month, and surely we need some level of constancy and accountability this year).
Enjoy, or not – but please do share your own choice picks.
Merry Christmas.

Basekou Kouyate, Ngoni ba - Kanto kelena (feat. Habib Koite) Malian ngoni master returns to acoustic roots.
Delicate Steve - Selfie of a Man Synthy silly catchy instrumental pop-rock.
Steve Gunn - Vagabond Guitar troubadour telling stories of solitude with unostentatious guitar tones.
FEBRUARY
Mara Balls - Ikävä ikävää Driving Finnish Doom-lite.
Julie Jacklin - Body A narrative masterclass, sombre and brooding, but also simmering and pulsating.
Strand of Oaks - Weird Ways Big widescreen rock, which builds into a gorgeous swirl of sound, with Timothy on fine yet reflective form, backed by the band of My Morning Jacket.
Crows - Hang Me High Long awaited debut from Idles approved band, loud fuzz Mary Chain / Dom Keller vibes.
Kel Assouf - Fransa Desert blues, with all the best Tuareg styling, but added beefy production.
MARCH

APRIL
The Comet Is Coming - Summon The Fire How can you not move to this?!
W.H. Lung - Empty Room Great new band (c.f. mailer 2017!), and as I already included ‘Inspiration!’ this is my second favourite cut from a top album.
Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation - Feel The Sun Another great artist (championed back in 2016 I think you’ll find), spectral psych grooves.
Weyes Blood - Mirror Forever Great opening line, there’s a coldness but also strangely comforting.

The Amazons - Doubt It Future rock heroes get dark.
Fat White Family, Parrot and Cocker Too - Feet - Parrot and Cocker Too Remix Gone for the remix version of this great track: what isn’t improved by added shakers and throbbing techno?
JULY
Michael Kiwanuka, Tom Misch - Money (with Tom Misch) The first of two Kiwanuka tracks in this list, but this was a standalone single, and has all the bubbly bass groove it was impossible not to include.
Drake, Rick Ross - Money In The Grave (Drake ft. Rock Ross) Speaking of money… bounce!
DOPE LEMON - Salt & Pepper Weird keys give way to J.J. Cale style guitar noodles, whilst Angus heaps on the druggy references adding to the meandering stoned atmosphere.
The Quiet Temple, Moon Duo - The Last Opium Den On Earth (Moon Duo Remix) Speaking of druggy… 12 minutes of acid psych jazz in the last opium den on earth.
Nev Cottee - Hello Stranger Cinematic and pastoral, but also searing
AUGUST
Palace - Running Wild Top class indie pop nugget with great simple guitar solo to end.
Kandodo 3 - Everything Green's Gone This definitely isn’t for everyone: think Nine Inch Nails soundtracks at their most impenetrable, if you can make it two thirds of the way through this 13 minute wig out, there are some great slide guitars.
Clairo – Bags Breakout bedroom pop with one of the hookiest melodies all year.
Mini Mansions - Works Every Time Behind the beat smooth grooves.
Death Hawks - Whisper Squelchy over produced 80s style pop bananas,
SEPTEMBER
Native Harrow - Can't Go On Like This Inevitable Laurel Canyon / Joni Mitchell comparisons on this retro analogue sound ballad.
Ty Segall - The Arms Ty does a rare acoustic number, and even throws in a rather tasteful mandolin line.
Pixx - Funsize Synth bleeps and beats disguise a Radiohead-esque creeping guitar line.
Sleater-Kinney - The Future Is Here Love the motorik dirge vibes here, underpin lovely vocal lines and melodies which remind us: the future is here, and we can’t go back.
Marika Hackman - i'm not where you are Great pop hooks and guitar lines.
OCTOBER
Dylan LeBlanc - Renegade I’m a big fan of LeBlanc and his retro stylings, and this track is super lilting 80s driving rock.
TOOL - Pneuma I struggled to get TOOL for a while, but this record and this track in particular is fucking phenomenal.
Lightning Dust - Devoted To Amber Webber and Joshua Wells’ solo project (previously of Black Mountain), conjure spectral dreamscapes.
Sturgill Simpson - Remember To Breathe Sturgill goes electronic rawk – and Tomoyasu Hotei wants his production back.

NOVEMBER
Kelsey Waldon - White Noise, White Lines Kentucky country groove rock.
WIVES - Waving Past Nirvana Churning fuzz rock underpins laconic loose vocals, cool.

JAMBO KENYA!!
Spesso sentirete persone dirvi : “Vai in Kenya??
I BEACH BOYS
State tranquillissimi!!
Giorgia

The Black Crowes have announced that they will release a new collection of covers, titled 1972.
The EP will be available digitally on May 4 as an Amazon Music exclusive. Vinyl and CD editions will be out on May 6 via the Black Crowes' Silver Arrow label. The project will mark a celebration of the 50th anniversary of some of the best rock-and-roll songs, including The Temptations' "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," which was released along with the announcement of the EP. The Black Crowes recorded the six-track 1972 EP at the iconic Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles in January. "The year 1972 was a watershed moment, some of the greatest rock and roll songs ever made came out of that year. To get our band back together in the studio, it had to be a celebration of rock and roll," said The Black Crowes' Chris Robinson. "This record is about love and devotion to something that makes us feel good. We hope that it makes fans around the world feel the same."

Pearl Jam are returning to the festival after 28 years, while White and Kings of Leon last played at the festival in 2014 and 2017, respectively.
"Bourbon and Beyond is definitely one we are looking forward to," KOL's Caleb Followill said in a statement. "It has amazing food and obviously the best stuff to drink, I love both of those things. And sharing the stage over the four days with friends like Pearl Jam and Chris Stapleton makes us even more excited about it. We can't wait!"

Howard’s quarter-century on the Copperstate
(Editor’s note: During the month of April, the Journal presents a series of stories about vintage rallies and vintage racing. Today, Howard Koby looks back at his years covering the Copperstate 1000 vintage sports car rally for this publication and others. If you have a story about your participation in a vintage rally or race that you’d like to share, please email us at [email protected].)
About 25 years ago, I happened to be in Phoenix and was heading to the Phoenix Art Museum when I stumbled upon a closed-off downtown street with an array of beautiful vintage and classic cars.  They were lined up for what looked like the start of a road rally.
Being a full-blown “car geek” and automotive photojournalist, I had my trusty battery of Nikon (film!) cameras in my car. I hurried back to get the tools of my trade, then rushed back to the action.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
Copperstate cars rally through the tall pines near Flagstaff in northern Arizona
The answer was the Copperstate 1000 Road Rally. Instinctively, I started taking photographs.
The Copperstate 1000 takes place in April and puts a group of passionate car enthusiasts and their pre-1973 vintage sports and grand touring cars on a thousand-mile adventure through the Arizona desert and, at higher elevations,  pine forests.
After making contact with the organizers, the Men’s Art Council of the Phoenix Art Museum, I hit the road on my first Mercedes-Benz (the title sponsor at the time) Copperstate 1000 in 1997, on assignment for the late Mike Cook, editor of the Jaguar Journal (club magazine).
I was pleased to learn that the rally served as a fundraiser for the Phoenix Art Museum and the 10-90 Copperstate Foundation, which provides emergency benefits to families and dependents of officers injured or killed in the line of duty.
Every year as a safety measure, a handpicked group of Arizona DPS motorcycle officers provides an escort, riding ahead of and behind the rally cars.
‘Field of Dreams’ at Tempe Diablo Stadium
Usually, there are about 80 to 90 rolling automotive works of art on the Copperstate that engage with the beautiful scenery after blasting off from the Phoenix area. In recent years, at least until the pandemic, the starting point has been Temple Diablo Stadium, spring training for the Los Angeles Angels baseball team, which is turned into a “Field of Dreams” car show.
Rallies need routes and as the Copperstate route book once noted, “Trust in Motherhood, Apple Pie and your Route Book.” The book not only guides the Copperstaters but each year introduces them to a different and challenging route.
One year it might lead them to the northern part of the state, starting up the Beeline Highway toward Payson and beyond, or it might take them through Prescott, or to historic Route 66 in Kingman and on to Oatman, where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their “honeymoon” at the Oatman Hotel in 1939.
Sedona, The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, even visits into Utah and Nevada, have provided spectacular scenic runs that left me breathless.
Southern routes take the cars through the grassy ranch lands of Patagonia, Nogales (at the Mexican border), into the unmatched beauty and serenity of the Saguaro National Park, and Tucson, known as the Old Pueblo.
Barry Meguiar fills the 1932 Duesenberg from the Imperial Palace collection
The late Leon Mandel, who was publisher of AutoWeek magazine, participated in many Copperstate rallies and referred to this “Orgy of automobility as the ‘Great American Car Revival,’ where participants share a belief that no time could be better spent than in an interesting car on a mean road in the company of like-minded people.”
For many years, the event honored a Grand Marshal, including the likes of Bobby Rahal, Brian Redman, Phil Hill, who drove his 1930 Pierce-Arrow Cab in 1996. Also, Lyn St. James, Stirling Moss, Bob Bondurant and Barry Meguiar, who arrived with Richie Clyne in a 1932 Judkins-bodied Duesenberg coupe from the Imperial Palace Auto Collection in Las Vegas.
Meguiar and Clyne had their hands full piloting the 6,000-pound machine, working its vintage brakes while descending from 9,000-foot elevations.
“We used everything… brakes, gears, parking brake to keep from losing it.” Meguiar said. “But we had a great time and a good workout!”
In 2003, I covered the Copperstate (Bondurant was Grand Marshal) for the old Car Collector Magazine and landed the cover with Randy Reiss’ fabulous fly-yellow 1962 Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta SWB. This late-series steel-bodied Prancing Horse with a booming V12 engine, Borrani wire wheels and outside Monza filler cap was one of my all-time favorites, although not for riding shotgun with Reiss, who drove it at unmentionable speeds.
The Leventhals’ 1953 Ferrari 340 MM
As I reminisce about wonderful memories of the Copperstate, I am reminded that it is not a competitive rally but a lifestyle event and celebratory exploration of the Arizona outback with the exquisite scenery of the American Southwest. It’s like a field trip for grownups, with catered lunches delivered in the middle of the desert.
Another favorite vintage machine that has been on many Copperstates is Rick and Nancy Rome’s exciting 1955 Kurtis 500 Swallow Coupe that was originally prepared for racing by Mickey Thompson to run the La Carrera Panamericana in 1955 (only to have that event canceled). The car still maintains its original Lincoln 317cid “Y” block engine with front disc/rear drum brakes and torsion-bar suspension.
And of course, there’s Michael and Katharina Leventhal’s stupendous 1953 Ferrari 340MM Le Mans Spyder that has run the Copperstate several times.
“It’s a beast with amazing torque and brute power,” Leventhal notes. “Visually, I just love to look at the car… it’s like moving art.”
Stephan Norman and his 1928 Bugatti in Las Vegas
In 2005, the tour stepped into Las Vegas, and I immediately thought of getting the provocative 1928 Bugatti Type 44 Roadster owned by Stephen Norman to downtown on Fremont Street for a photoshoot with all the glittering casino lights as a backdrop. Norman agreed and we roared off.
When we arrived downtown, the “one-off” Bugatti caused quite a stir with 100s of tourists that had never seen such a car. “What kind of car is that?” bellowed out from the crowd.
My favorite route was the 2007 journey that included two scenic wonders — the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Zion National Park in Utah. I’ll never forget, as our wagon train traveled through six climate zones from the Sonoran Desert up past the San Francisco Peaks and through the solitude of Navajo reservations and reaching the geologic beauty of Zion National Park, the sight of Jess and Eddie Marker as they came whizzing by in their ultra-light 1969 Lotus Type 14 Elite.
After 25 years attending the Copperstate, there are too many favorites to mention, so hopefully the selection of photos will speak for themselves.

Delegaciones (Boroughs)
Misc. Notes....
Álvaro Obregón (south-west)
named after Álvaro Obregón, a leader of the Mexican Revolution and an early-20th-century Mexican president, who was assassinated in this area
former name is San ngel, and the historic San Ángel neighborhood still retains this name, as does the Televisa San Angel motion picture and television studio, which is located in this municipality
borders Miguel Hidalgo to the North, Benito Juárez and Coyoacán to the East, Magdalena Contreras, Tlalpan and Jalatlacalco municipality (State of Mexico) to the South, and Cuajimalpa to the West
Azcapotzalco (northwestern)
consisted of neighborhoods from the pre-Hispanic period. Many of these neighborhoods exist to this day, called colonias, barrios or pueblos
process of rapid growth, with the modernization of infrastructure and the establishment of industry
Refinería de Marzo refinery was founded at the end of the 1930s and attracted even more industry
government also established a major rail station for cargo at Pantaco
Two exception were Colonia Clavería and Nueva Santa María which remained middle class in the mid 20th century, mostly descendants of those who had built country homes
One legend of the area is about the “Enchanted Pool of Xancopina” a fresh water spring that existed during the pre-Hispanic era and where Moctezuma is said to have submerged much of his treasure after being defeated by the Spanish
Benito Juárez (residential, historic) - research Benito Juárez
Coyoacán
Plaza Hidalgo, The Plaza del Centenario, Casa Municipal, Parish of San Juan Bautista, Museo Nacional de Culturas Populares,
bordered to the north by the boroughs of Benito Juárez, Iztapalapa, Xochimilco, Tlalpan and Álvaro Obregón
“place of coyotes,” when the Aztecs named a pre-Hispanic village on the southern shore of Lake Texcoco which was dominated by the Tepanec people
Cuajimalpa de Morelos
the west side of the Federal District in the Sierra de las Cruces mountains which separate Mexico City from the State of Mexico
Desierto de los Leones National Park
“de Morelos” was added in 1970 to honor José María Morelos, a hero of the Mexican War of Independence
Prior to the 1950s urbanization of the area was limited because of its terrain
Cuauhtémoc
entered on the Zócalo or main square which contains the Aztec ruins of the Templo Mayor, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace of Mexico
oldest parts of the city, extending over what was the entire city in the 1920s. This area is the historic and cultural center of the city, although it is not the geographical center
Zona Rosa is a neighborhood in Mexico City which is known for its shopping, nightlife, gay community, and its recently established Korean community. The area’s history as a community began when it was developed as a residential district for wealthy foreigners and Mexico City residents looking to move from the city center. The development of the area stalled during and after the Mexican Revolution, but the streets named after European capitals and remaining European style mansions are a testament to the area’s immigrant origins. The next phase in the area’s history was from the 1950s to 1980s, when it was revitalized by artists, intellectuals and the city’s elite who repopulated the area, gave it a bohemian reputation and attracted exclusive restaurants and clubs for visiting politicians and other notables. It was during this time that the area received the name of Zona Rosa, from José Luis Cuevas, who commented that it was too timid to be red but too frivolous to be white. The era ended in the 1980s, when many of the upscale businesses moved out and tourism, men’s clubs, prostitution and other crime moved in.

Gustavo A. Madero
named after Gustavo A. Madero, the brother and fellow revolutionary of President Francisco I. Madero
Basílica de Guadalupe, the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the foot of Tepeyac Hill, where Roman Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared to the indigenous Mexican Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin in 1531
Iztacalco
center-east of the district and is the smallest of the city’s boroughs
The island community would remain small and isolated through the colonial period, but drainage projects in the Valley of Mexico dried up the lake around it. The area was transformed into a maze of small communities, artificial islands called chinampas and solid farmland divided by canals up until the first half of the 20th century. Politically, the area has been reorganized several times, with the modern borough coming into existence in 1929. Today, all of the canals and farmland are dried out and urbanized as the most densely populated borough and the second most industrialized.
Iztapalapa
located on the east side
La Magdalena Contreras
named after two historically important communities, La Magdalena Atlitic, one of four communities with pre Hispanic roots, and Colonia Contreras, an area noted for its textiles mills until the 20th century
The northern end of the borough is urbanized with the rest, with its mountains and ravines, designated as a conservation zone. However, urban sprawl is putting pressure on these areas, with the borough government promoting ecotourism as a way to preserve the area’s forests and other natural resources
Los Dinamos, canyons and ravines cut by streams and fresh water springs which eventually form the Río Magdalena, Mexico City’s only remaining free flowing river
Miguel Hidalgo
created in 1970
National Museum of Anthropology
Milpa Alta
southeast corner of the Distrito Federal, bordering the State of Mexico and Morelos
Tláhuac
Tlalpan
largest borough, with over eighty percent under conservation as forest and other ecologically sensitive area
The rest, almost all of it on the northern edge, has been urban since the mid-20th century. When it was created in 1928, it was named after the most important settlement of the area, Tlalpan, which is referred to as “Tlalpan center” (Tlalpan centro) to distinguish it from the borough
Venustiano Carranza
borough was formed in 1970 when the center of Mexico City was subdivided into four boroughs
Xochimilco
centered on the formerly independent city of Xochimilco, which was established on what was the southern shore of Lake Xochimilco in the pre-Hispanic period
