aww thank you so much, that's very much something I needed to hear today so thank you!

I believe I might have mentioned this one before, but it's very much a fic/plotline I think about a lot.

Title: Guilty Remnant

Plot: An AU where Sauron is semi-successful. He breaks Denethor/Gondor's defenses and swoops up from the south while his forces that were moving north succeed in defeating the Dale and Lonely Mountain defenses after which they swoop south clinching the defeat of Rohan who is essentially sandwiched.

However! All is not lost, Frodo and Sam haven't been taken captive and Sauron remains without the ring. There is hope for our heroes as Sauron's victory so far is just militarily - not a full and complete deal.

Leaders of the free peoples go into hiding (Aragorn, Gandalf, Boromir [alive always], Legolas, Gimli, Faramir etc. etc.) in order to re-coop and figure out next steps.

During the taking of Rohan, Theoden and Eowyn manage to flee to join the others. Eomer (and Eothain and Erkenbrand) gets stuck behind enemy lines because of where they were positioned militarily during the war and its many battles. In addition, Eomer was super reluctant about leaving his people and so waited too late to get out of dodge (not unlike his father, but without the death part).

Now, keep in mind that Sauron knows that Saruman sought to steal the ring from him and so he isn't too keen on keeping him around. At the moment, the Witchking is doing micro-managing of Saruman to ensure Good Behaviour but the wizard is on thin fucking ice. 

Queue Grima.

Who has slid his little snakey self onto the throne. Now that he is king, he's suddenly feeling a good deal less attached to doing whatever Saruman (et al) tell him to do. There's a sense of independence and the realization that he finally gets to run things how he wants to - or has the potential to if only Sauron and Saruman were less oppressive.

Eomer, who was captured, Grima manages to secure his freedom in return for good behaviour and being a sort of symbolic representation of a vague sense of quasi-approval/legitimacy for his reign. Eomer has agreed to this because he and Eothain and Erkenbrand figure that whatever information they can glean from Grima and his cronies can be secretly siphon off to Theoden, Eowyn and everyone else in hiding to help them with their plans.

There's a lot of politicking between Edoras, Isengard and Barad-Dur on who runs what parts of Rohan and who holds which titles. Saruman wants his personal henchman in top tier positions of the marshalate, Grima wants his own people and Sauron wants his cronies in. It gets messy. Also there’s a lot of tension and possible reprisals to different parties because of the aforementioned Sauron knowing about Saruman’s attempts to undermine him. 

The thing is, Eomer was a good Third Marshal and knew how to run things effectively and efficiently and Grima loves efficiencies. So Grima has Eomer doing sort-of quasi-acting role as Third Marshal in the background while publicly, of course, it's supposed to be one of Sauron's henchmen in that position.

This means that they end up forming a sort-of functioning work relationship. Grima trusts no one, but there are fundamental truths about Eomer he knows he can rely on and that ends up helping the foundations of their ability to work together form. It's the same in reverse, only Grima's reliable qualities aren't always good ones. Eomer just knows he can trust Grima to react/respond to situations in a certain way, depending on the inputs.

Anyway, they somehow make it work. More from necessity than anything else. A sort of "enemy of my enemy" deal with the devil at the crossroads.

Meanwhile, Theoden, Eowyn, Aragorn etc. etc. have managed to re-coop themselves and begin a successful slow retaking of Gondor with the intention of moving upward into Rohan. Which means Grima is forced to make some Hard Decisions and to maybe develop a single moral. Possibly even two.

It ends happily enough for all involved as I am a sucker for happy(ish) endings (for a given value of happy). There are several possible outcomes for how things wind up in the end and I alternate between them in my head. One where Grima manages to stick it out as king, the other is there's a bit of switcharoo with Eomer, and there's another where Theoden comes back in.

It is essentially a long exploration of leadership, what it means to hold power, the idea of Necessary v. Good, the fact that there are no "ends and means" only means because ends don't truly exist, and what are the necessary elements that need to be present to effect true change in a person.

Apologies for the very long write up! This is just a fully plotted monstrosity of a fic that I am always tinkering with in my head and would love to one day write but likely never will (though tbf, never say never).

2. a headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like!

I used to get kind of annoyed when FMA fans would talk about Roy Mustang being Xingese. Like, what, just because Arakawa-san drew his eyes a little pointier than other characters', that means he's from Xing? Some people just have smaller eyes, you know! Yoki looks more Xingese than Mustang, if you ask me, yet nobody talks about him being from Xing!

But I've read some really interesting fics that explore what it would mean if he was Xingese, or half-Xingese. The implications of one or both of his parents being Xingese immigrants, legal or otherwise, can be really fun to poke at.

3. a character that fandom has helped you appreciate

You know, if I'm being really honest, I never particularly cared about Merry from LotR that much. He just didn't interest me, compared to all the other characters. But I have to say that hanging around the Fig Tree Discord server has given me new appreciation for him, because of how much they talk about him in such glowing terms XD He's still probably my least-favorite of the four main Hobbits, but I have to acknowledge that he is one practical dude who can Get Stuff Done, and there's so much courage and angst and hurt/comfort in his scenes in the Battle of Pelennor Fields and the aftermath.

4. say something nice about a ship you don't ship (it can be another ship in your fandom, a mutual's OTP, etc)

Mmkay, so I don't ship Bucky and Natasha (mostly because I don't ship Bucky with anyone post-Winter Soldier), but I will say I can understand the appeal. Two ex-assassins who were turned into living weapons, basically, had their bodies modified against their will, carry a huge weight of guilt for the things they've done.... I feel like, if Bucky were to have a successful romantic relationship with anyone, it would pretty much have to be Natasha. She's the only one who could relate to him on that deep of a level, and she would understand his need to go slowly, know how to help him with PTSD, etc.

13. your favorite type of fandom event (gift exchange, ship week, secret santa, prompt meme, etc)

I think I'd have to say prompt challenges, considering I've done three 100 Themes fics, have an ongoing one-sentence prompt challenge fic, and am currently doing my Let Me Count the Ways dialogue prompt challenge. A really good challenge will have words or phrases that immediately suggest a story, but aren't so specific that you have no wiggle room to fit it to various characters.

16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate

This keyboard thing from Andor episode 7 is made from a steno machine! The little typewriter-ish device court reporters use when transcribing court proceedings! I would recognize it anywhere, and I just want everyone to appreciate the origin of this cool-looking prop.

24. how has fandom positively impacted your life?

The most important thing fandom has given me is virtually all the friends I have today. I've met some of the most wonderful people in the world through fandom, people I probably would never have met because of where they live (@dairogo I'm looking at you), because we wouldn't have much in common without fandom (hi @rainintheevening), or simply because we're enough apart in age and space that our paths would probably not have crossed otherwise (<3 @sergeanttomycaptain). I love being able to connect with so many different people through fandom, like most (if not all) of my mutuals here. Even though we have different perspectives on some things, we can all come together when it comes to love of a great story.

MY TOLKIEN BLACK HEADCANONS because I understand him

A lot of people just chalk him up to be "a smart kid" a la kyle or wendy but dont really define it which bothers me. I think Tolkien is only really smart in say mathematics and biology and is more so an athlete than bookish. Mfer can do advanced algebra just fine but dont ask him too many questions about the civil war he just doesnt care okay.

Speaking of Tolkien has not read or seen anything okay his pop culture consumption is bizarre. He doesn't know what a harry potter is he doesn't know what star wars is and everything he knows about lotr has been against his will. He has lived off of direct to dvd disney sequels and whatever esoteric foreign artsy movie his parents are obsessed with in that week to seem so smart and pretentious. He is frankly a little too scared to ask too so he just plays along for the most part and skates by on whatever he knows second hand.

HE LOVES SPIDERS why dont we talk about how he loves spiders. Which just makes me think he LOVES bugs in general he's that kid that has an illustrated encyclopedia on bugs he reads for fun and if given the chance would go on a tangent on any random species if hes sure you wont make fun of him for it. I just know he has a lil terrarium and he would NEVER squish a bug ever in his life and he would be very upset if you did maybe distrust you even. His friends know to send him a pic of a cool bug if they come across one in the wild he loves that.

I don't think Madea is some exception to Tolkien I think he is just a very easily amused boy okay literally anything and everything makes him laugh. Tyler Perry in a dress? Hilarious. Kick a guy in the balls? Hilarious. Whoopie cushions? Puns? Banana peel? HILARIOUS. Its why he and Jimmy get along so well Tolkien is never a dull audience.

AND ON THAT NOTE i think Tolkien watches bad movies on PURPOSE cuz theyre funny in an ironic way alright he loves watching people genuinely try to make a movie and fail at it so spectacularly. Madea is a guilty pleasure tho no doubt about it.

He had a very obnoxiois karate kid phase. Not the movie I mean like he took karate classes and everyone had to know about it. You know the kind I'm talking about.

To keep it sort of brief i believe Tolkien's more of the one who gets his heart broken than be the heartbreaker. Hes very popular and his relationships are wonderful and passionate but they fizzle out fast - and not even necessarily from his end. Everyone says hes a great boyfriend and he always tries so hard but he's never "the one" and I imagine it eventually makes him a little jaded ngl, learn to take everything more casual and expect it to never really last for long. Which of course then ironically makes it a self made issue. Point is is he's the cool guy you like who never seems to care and is so effortless but deep down he cares a lot actually.

I think after the Faith+1 and Wing incidents Tolkien actually keeps his interest in music on the down low. He only plays the bass in private and skips karaoke night. Its just that the embarrassing memories make him cringe way too hard but he does genuinely love it still. You're gonna have to coax it out of him very gently.

I think he's the type to use social media in like little bursts where he joins in on specific trends and posts daily and then just stops within a week or so and a few months later when he comes back online he's surprised at his decent clout and then repeat. Very basic basic tho like selfies and five month old memes and his random opinion on whatevers relevant that may or may not age very poorly.

I don't like to think of Tolkien as the "mom friend" or whatever but I can definitely see his friend group seeking advice from him cuz hes 1) got the most relationship experience and 2) his parents are the most functional of all the parents in their group so they raised him properly to like, yknow, communicate and problem solve and stuff. A wild concept. Him actively mothering everyone tho? Not so sure about that like hes a rich only child where does he learn to take up that kind of role.

He is not above violence, drugs or alcohol LET HIM HAVE FUN for God's sake. He doesn't really smoke tobacco and he drinks socially but he is a stoner and will experiment with anything if the company's right. And obviously he'll only throw a punch if driven to his limit or in defense but my boy likes to witness some mindless violence at the very least.

Idk how to finish this post so I'll just say that Tolkien did in fact not see Black Panther IN FACT i would go so far as to say he is a comics-only truther even. That is all for now.
