I was reading Lou Sullivan's 'Information for the Female to Male, crossdresser and transexual' (Which is a very interesting look into the 80's trans space and mindset, I highly recommend. Though be warned it is of the times and uses now outdated terms.)
But every so often he would include little blurbs about historical transmascs/crossdressers, (depending on the story the line is blurred) and this is definitely my favourite. I'd pay to hear these stories.

After seeing this post, I found some more photos of Lou Sullivan and his birds.....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to the website I found the photos on, the cockatiel (or at least one of the birds) is named Mr. Bird. The second photo also captions "Mr. Bird" as being in it, though there's no cockatiel in the frame and instead a lovebird and what is probably a budgie, so I don't know if "Mr. Bird" was a nickname for all his birds or just for his cockatiel.
Anyway. Don't mind me getting emotional about also being a trans man who loves birds and has a pet bird and likes houseplants....

I was shocked to learn nobody has made a PDF of Lou Sullivan's "Looking Toward Transvestite Liberation" essay before! The 1974 article was a huge moment in trans history, uniting queer, trans, and feminist experiences. You can read and share it here.

thank you for going the extra mile and gambling EVERYTHING just so trans men and transmasc people like me can be safe, love loudly, and exist peacefully.

if youre trans + gay (or even if ur not tbh) read lou sullivan's diaries. no piece of literature has made me feel so understood & cherished before. i wish id read it earlier in my transition when i was extremely confused & terrified, it wouldve made it all so much easier. he writes about the trans & gay experience in a way ive never seen before anywhere, its so simple & succinct yet rich & nuanced. we are very so often removed from gay &/or trans narratives & i cant even begin to tell you how much it means to see yourself in another person, specially a person that lived before many of us. its a reminder that weve always been here, we will always be here, & we r beautiful. thank you lou

Reading Lou Sullivan's diaries as a gay trans man makes me feel so seen.
Like I view my gender as "gay man". I don't relate my gender to that of a straight man, and I definitely don't relate it to any form of womanhood or nonbinary-ness. And for so long it was scary and embarrassing and confusing. I felt like I was fetishizing gay men or trying to wiggle myself into some club.
But Lou feels the same way! The utter desperation he feels trying to be seen as a man and to be included in the gay male community is so fucking RELATABLE. And I cannot overstate how happy I am that he was seen as a gay man and was desired by other gay men, it gives me so much fucking hope.

We Both Laughed In Pleasure by Lou Sullivan
Tumblr media
Drawn from Lou Sullivan’s meticulously kept journals, this landmark book records the life of arguably the first publicly gay trans man to medically transition.
We Both Laughed In Pleasure: The Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan narrates the inner life of a gay trans man moving through the shifting social, political, and medical mores of the second half of the 20th century. Sullivan kept comprehensive journals from age eleven until his AIDS-related death at thirty-nine. Sensual, lascivious, challenging, quotidian and poetic, the diaries complicate and disrupt normative trans narratives. Entries from twenty-four diaries reveal Sullivan’s self-articulation and the complexity of a fascinating and courageous figure.

Um, sorry for sending this ask to you… But since you’re a pretty popular GC blog… does any of your followers have any good caps or sources of Lou Sullivan’s homophobia? Everything I find off of tumblr is just praising her and validating that she was a Real Gay Man. 😬 My local library doesn’t have her diaries, and I don’t really wanna buy her work for obvious reasons…
Anyone?
