Ray let out a deep sigh, blinking the tears from his eyes as the group around him continued to talk.
“Maybe her phone died! I don't know!” Gary's frantic voice arose from the crowd.
“Just stop with the dumb ideas, alright.” Peter said, holding up a hand to silence Gary.
“He's just trying to be helpful.” Callie stated calmly, trying to diffuse the tension in the room.
“Yeah, well, he's not.” Peter retorted.
Letting out a groan, Winston decided to put an end to this. “Alright, that's enough!” He shouted. “We can't be at each other's throat right now when Alex is out there somewhere.” Seeing Ray's reaction to his words, he added, “And we will find her and bring her home.”
As he finished, there was a knock at the firehouse door.
Pushing past everyone, Ray headed for the door, Peter not far behind. Opening the door, the group was met with the solemn face of the chief of police.
“Evening, Dr. Stantz. Dr. Venkman.” He nodded.
Nodding back and putting on a brave face, Ray responded, “Evening, officer. Any word on Alex?”
“You see, Dr. Stantz, that’s what I wanted to speak with you about.”
His words spread over the group like the first frozen wind of winter. The only noise in the Firehouse was the pained cry that left Janine, which was quickly silenced by Winston pulling her to him.
Ray took a deep breath, preparing himself for the worst. Over his shoulder, he saw Peter’s face quickly turn expressionless.
“If I wasn’t talking to a former Ghostbuster, I wouldn’t be too sure how to explain.”
“Well,” Peter encouraged, a strained fake smile on his face, “do your best.”
Letting out a breath, the officer began, “Well, there have been some reports regarding Alex. But they aren’t what we usually receive regarding a missing person.”
“What the hell’s that supposed to mean?” Winston asked, becoming angry at the officer’s stalling.
“If I may?” The officer asked, holding up a thumb drive and motioning to the computer that sat on Janine’s desk.
Janine nodded, wiping her tear-stained cheeks as she went to the computer and logged in.
Pulling up the files, the officer stood back as he clicked on the first.
Crowding around the computer, the team watched in confusion and horror as they saw a being obliterate buildings with a single blast from their hand, gasping when a face came into view.
“Tha, b, b, that’s-” Janine stuttered.
“Alex.” Ray finished, his tone exuding nothing but seriousness.
The group turned to him in shock.
“But how?” Gary asked. “It’s physically impossible for a human being to do something like that with their bare hands.”
“Possession, Mr. Grooberson. Plain and simple.” Ray stated matter of factly. “Just before she disappeared, Alex was contacted by Janine, who informed her of a ghost that needed to be taken care of. It’s safe to assume that the ghost she was going to capture is the one who possessed her.”
“And who would that be?” Peter asked sardonically.
Ray looked down. “I don’t know, Peter.”
Giving him a look, Peter walked away from the group.
“Thank you, officer.” Winston said, shaking the man’s hand. “If it’s at all possible, could you leave these recordings with us?”
The officer nodded.
As he left, Peter ran a hand over his face.
“Possession! That’s the first thing that comes out of your mouth!” He screamed, walking towards a sullen Ray. “Oh, we’re the Ghostbusters so the only plausible explanation for anything is possession.” His tone became mocking.
“Peter.” Dana pleaded as Ray avoided eye contact.
“No! We need an explanation that’s more plausible than possession!”
“And what would that be?” Winston asked, angered, causing Peter to end his assault on Ray. “Psychokinetic slime under the city?! Or how ‘bout a god with her dog henchman who has the power to summon anything we think of to destroy the city?!” He sighed. “Face it, Peter, nothing like this has a plausible explanation.”
Peter made a face, letting out a snort of derision.
“Winston’s right, Peter. And you know it.” Dana placed a hand on Peter’s shoulder.
“This just needs to be something we can fix.” He huffed. “We have no experience in possession.”
“I have an idea.” Phoebe chimed in.
The group turned to face the younger Spengler.
“The machine at the Paranormal Research Center. The one you guys use to separate the ghosts from the objects they're possessing.”
Winston's eyes went wide.
“It was able to separate my spirit from me. It's worth a shot.”
“Absolutely not!” Winston shouted. “Phoebe, that machine nearly killed you.”
“Zedd.”
Winston turned to where Ray had shrunk away to.
“It's the only idea we have.”
“And how do you suppose we do that, Ray? Whatever's got Alex in its grasp just blew up a New York High Rise with a wave of its hand. I doubt it'll volunteer to step into a machine that'll separate it from her.”
“We'll use our proton packs.” Ray said, becoming hopeful.
“We've only used those on apparitions, never on people who've been possessed.” Winston retorted.
“It's worth a shot.” Peter sighed, feeling a bit hopeful himself.
The team looked at one another, waiting for another possible suggestion. When none came, they split off to put on their jumpsuits and grab their gear.
