a textbook case of not understanding your own characters, or, jordelia won't last under the parameters canon set out for them. some issues a tsc fan sees in tsc, pt. iv

Lemme paraphrase: I love Jordelia. I do. I love James and Cordelia and their crazy, beautiful, broken love story. That being said, James Herondale and the narrative are not nearly as healthy as we think they are and Cordelia's not going to stay in this situation long. Well, not in canon, under the parameters and presumptions the canon has laid out for them. I cannot picture Cordelia Carstairs wanting to be a mother under the circumstances presented in canon and the fact that Cassandra Clare leaves us with the assumption that she will be is deeply disturbing proof that she doesn't have any in-depth understanding of the characters she created. I give you a summary this time because the full analysis deals with issues of consent both dubious and completely nonexistent, and with pregnancy, and I'm sure some of y'all are not going to be comfortable with that.

part one: cordelia couldn't give informed consent in chain of thorns

"Cordelia had heard things whispered among other girls…but she still had little idea what happened in the marriage bed." —Cassandra Clare, Chain of Iron, pg. 110 in my copy.

"I will marry some other man, and he will know I was married to you. He will expect me to know how to kiss, and—do other things." —Cassandra Clare, Chain of Iron, pg. 363 in my copy

At no point after this is Cordelia shown to receive any kind of Talk whatsoever from anyone. The consent she gave in the scene in Chain of Thorns was uninformed. And uninformed consent is, surprise, not actually consent. Also, James knew this. He knew she didn't know anything. And he went ahead with it anyway.

part two: motherhood

Look me in the eyes and tell me that Cordelia Carstairs shows any indications in her canonical personality of being someone who wants to be a mother.

Firstly, she has a very busy, slightly wild, and yet also deeply disciplined lifestyle. Visits to the Hell Ruelle, hours of training, a deep emotional connection to the blade she wields, and a lifelong goal of being a hero. A merciful hero. She also takes two different partners in the course of the series (James and Matthew), suggesting in my eyes from the way in which she goes about this that potentially she might be open to polyamory. None of this is really a lifestyle conducive to babies. They take up too much time, too much money, and too much physical space. They're not conducive to polyamorous relationships where your partners aren't living under the same roof, you can't just leave them at one house to go stay with your other partner neither can you just shuffle them around with you when you move. And unlike Lucie, whose primary lifelong passion, writing, is something that can be done at home in the brief snatches of time when one is free, Cordelia doesn't have any hobbies that she could continue to do despite the sheer time that raising a child takes up. She'd have to give up everything but reading and playing chess and those are not enough.

Secondly, she watched in real time as her mother put aside everything, including her own mental health and wellbeing, to raise two children. She watched Sona give up the things she loved, choose to stay with an abusive husband, stop patrolling and fighting, and eventually waste away into a sickly hollow shell of herself. Her closest, most formative experience of motherhood paints it as a traumatic, exhausting, demoralizing, and restricting condition that forces you to give up your chosen lifestyle, your hobbies, and eventually your sense of identity and pride as an individual for the sake of your children.

I cannot, under these circumstances, imagine that Cordelia would find the idea of putting her own life aside for the sake of babies an appealing one. I imagine if you brought up children with her, the answer would be a resounding no. I can practically see the way she'd wrinkle her nose at the idea.

And yet, I don't see any other male Herondales forthcoming. If Cassandra Clare's canon is to be believed Cordelia must be the mother of at least one child so that the family line can continue.

Third. We know, as explained in part two, that Cordelia never received proper education and can't give informed consent. And James and Cordelia played very fast and loose with the concept of safety in the scenes we got in Chain of Thorns.

Is this what happens? Is this how we get a Herondale family line? Does Cordelia become a mother without consenting to it? I can't imagine she'd want to stay in that situation very long. I certainly cannot see her wanting to raise the child. I don't want this to be the case. I don't want to see her leaving James to raise his son alone while she escapes, hurt, to nurse her wounds and rage at him from somewhere safe. But unless we're given another Herondale like we got Alex for the Lightwoods, I don't see any happier ending for James and Cordelia.

part three: in conclusion All this to say, Cassandra Clare doesn't really understand Cordelia Carstairs. She created a character whose situation suggests she'd have no interest in motherhood, and then forced motherhood upon her. This is not the only time she's misunderstood Cordelia either. In Chain of Gold she's shown to be impulsive, but she's also shown to be a woman of action and anger, not a woman of passivity and tears. If Cordelia remained in character throughout Chain of Thorns, when she saw James and Grace in the foyer at the end of the book she would have come marching downstairs to demand to know Just what the hell is going on here? Instead, Clare chooses to have her…run away. Why? Because it gets her quickly to the next plot point, I guess. Despite the fact that this is decidedly not the Cordelia Carstairs that I know. And this isn't the only character she's lacked understanding of, or forced out of character for the sake of the plot. Cordelia and motherhood is simply the most grievous and, quite frankly, disturbing example.

Fic writer interview from @gembu-tortuesouscafeine

1. How many works do you have on AO3?  35 :) I have older fics I have totally lost. I also have old fics I was not planning on putting on AO3, but I read a post one day saying it’s an archive and it would be nice to have everything on it so I plan to add the ones I can still find to my profile one day!

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?  363 397 words. Wow. 

3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Haikyû is clearly dominating here by being a popular fandom 😀 Older fics have higher kudos counts, too, so I’m not sure this top shows anything! La musique adoucit les mœurs (mais ça dépend des personnes) (Haikyû - Kuroo x Tsukishima) is my very first Haikyû fanfic :) The confession dialogue is definitely one of the best I have written, I still love it to bits today. But the last chapter has pretty much nothing happening in it and if I was the kind of person who actually re-writes their fics to make them better, that chapter would definitely be the FIRST thing on my list. Also, as I’ve written this fic while the manga was ongoing, it is not totally canon compliant, and this is not something I like >_> L'imprévu du week-end (Haikyû - Kuroo x Tsukishima) is a smut-centric fic but the banter is really top-notch in this one, so I understand why it is so liked despite being mostly smut :D Après le match (Haikyû - Bokuto x Akaashi) is a pure PWP so maybe my previous assumption that smut-centric fics get less kudos is wrong? Or I write very good smut? I don’t know. Le meilleur grand frère au monde (et comment il a failli tout gâcher) (Haikyû - Kuroo x Tsukishima) is the following of the first one, so it definitely benefits from it. It’s not that good, very very very sappy. Une question en l'air et une réponse adaptée (Haikyû - Bokuto x Akaashi) is a fic co-written with my wife with alternating POVs. I was in charge of Bokuto and loved every second of it. I have no idea why all my other Bokuto x Akaashi fics are from Akaashi’s POV, Bokuto is SO MUCH FUN to write. Unexpectedly, the first non-Haikyû fic of my top is a Dorohedoro fic : C'est le tango de tous les fossoyeurs (Noi x Shin) which was a blast to write! (Except for the het smut scene, what was I thinking?) Can’t believe there are more than 30 kudos on one of my Dorohedoro fanfics, actually XD And 8 bookmarks! WTF? Who are you, Dorohedoro fans reading Noi x Shin fanfictions in French?

4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Definitely! But I don’t receive that many, that’s the thing about writing in French ^^; I answer on AO3, but when I get reviews on ffnet, I usually don’t remember my password and never answer them :D Oops.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? I don’t write angst! I always write tooth-rotting fluff! But, my X-Men First Class fanfics (especially Un jour nouveau and Eveillé, both Erik x Charles fics) do have a a bittersweet tone. I wouldn’t say they have angsty endings, but they’re definitely not happy and fluffy like when I write anime sports boy love stories :D And writing that, I realize I do have on AO3 an old Eyeshield 21 fic about unrequited love : Ne dis rien (Takami > Sakuraba > Shin). That one is angsty. This is really really NOT my cup of tea :(

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? Well, aside from the three above, I guess I only have happy endings! The happy ending being: they’re in love <3

7. Do you write crossovers? No. I don’t mind crossovers, but I don’t really care about them and never get crossover ideas.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic? I don’t think so!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, I do! Not that I enjoy writing it that much ^^; Usually while writing the fic, there’s a hole in the chapter with “insert smut here” annoted somewhere and the smut ends up being the last thing I write :D What kind of smut? What’s this question? XD I write very regular smut, I think. And usually not very kinky.

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I don’t think so. But then I write in French, often for pretty obscure fandoms or ships, I don’t have much of an audience anyway :D

11. Have you ever had a fic translated? I had several people asking if they could translate my fics, but I think they never finished their translations XD I would love to translate my fics in English to have a bit more people reading them, but that’s too much effort and it’s a bit vain, isn’t it? But I absolutely love comments like “my French is so rusty but I loved your fic” or “I had to use Google Translate to read it but it was so good”. I do get them from time to time and they warm my heart. @sturlsons comments on getting better at French by reading my KuroTsukki fics are definitely among the best I received :)

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, Une question en l'air et une réponse adaptée (Haikyû - Bokuto x Akaashi), which I commented on before. We had started a second one we never finished where Bokuto and Akaashi adopt a dog and it’s lots of very silly shenanigans, but I’m not even sure if we still have the WIP somewhere.

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Come on, that’s the hardest question ever >_> The thing I know is that there are ships I love for which I would never write a fanfic (for example OFMD Ed and Stede). And some where I don’t even want to read fics about (Oscar and André from Versailles no Bara). It’s difficult to explain why. That doesn’t make me love them less than the ones I write for.

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I started a Prince of Tennis fic with aged-up characters recently :D I indulged a bit, I don’t even have a real plot, I have no idea where it’s going, so it will just be a nice little WIP I’ll go to from time to time for myself :)

15. What are your writing strengths? Dialogues! (Well, I hope so, with the amount of dialogues I write :D) I do love funny internal monologues too. I hope they’re fun for the readers too. I also think I write characters pretty in character. And for fics happening in Japan, I hope they do read like things happening in Japan.

16. What are your writing weaknesses? Descriptions! Please don’t make me tell you what they wear and what the room is like. I’m also not that good at plot… It’s usually very thin or just “they’re falling in love” :D

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I never had to use it but I don’t mind if it’s justified. I do use Japanese “-san” or “-kun” but not expressions like “tadaima” or “otsukare-sama”, which I replace with French counterparts.

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for? In notebooks for friends, it was Dragon Ball Z :D Published on the internet and in fanzines it was Highlander.

19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to? Although I am in lots of fandoms, I usually don’t write for most of them. I just have the ships I want to write for and then I write for them again and again and again :D I think Prince of Tennis is the only fandom for which I have written 5 or 6 different ships and this is definitely not what I usually do. Tl;dr: I don’t think there’s a fandom that I want to write for that I haven’t yet.

20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written This is SO hard. I’m really fond of Retrouvailles (Eyeshield 21 - Takami x Sakuraba) and of my two gen fics L’an prochain (Haikyû - 3rd gym centric) and Remplaçant (Eyeshield 21 - Yukimitsu-centric). I think some of my Highlander fanfics were actually quite nice and not romance-centric, but I don’t remember them that much (Le Projet Methos and Endymion both come to mind though).

The Why Didn’t I Follow Yousht To College? List

1.) I didn’t want to be like my mom who followed her big crush (from Cuba) to Rutgers, got rejected, and then he fled from her to the Dominican Republic for his doctorate...

2.) I didn’t want to straight-up be Felicity (TV show), but she actually got the guy, so go figure!...

3.) Bitchy friends 1-3 all told meesht to find someone *NEW* at college since they were tired of my old spiel about yousht (I’m so sorry I spieled!)...

4.) I actually liked my school at first, for many reasons, especially academics, and your school was less appealing.... But between the cost and the strange people there, I should have transferred (after that one great year), at least...

5.) It seemed hopeless between us, thought you’d find someone else *AHEM*, and NOT need meesht any more....

HONORABLE MENTION: What would yousht have done with meesht there?!?... I don’t know... I didn’t want going there to beesht a big romantic overture...

HONORABLE HONORABLE MENTION: I was “leashed” (probably NOT a bad thing), and I had wild oates to sew... I thought I had finally made-up my own mind about something, without it being related to yousht.... Yeah, worst time to try to be on my own, EVER!!!...

MENTION OF HONORABLE: My school was “Ivy League” Adjacent, and I had dreamt of going to Princeton with my GOOD grades...

***DISCLAIMER***: Did it have anything to do with yousht as a person?!?... NOT exactly, just that yousht were drifting a bit... And there was Allison and Erin at Fumanchu’s place.... I just figured, it wasn’t meesht.... And NONE of my chick friends bothered to beesht like, “Did yousht ever try talking about what yousht want in a relationship?!?... Like, without it being about him necessarily?!?... Or with it being about him?!?... He already knows yousht like him... Why don’t yousht try talking about your needs or your dreams or something?!?”... Instead of blaming meesht for what was lacking, they called meesht cray and gaslit meesht... 

If it helps, the shit I told people was just the shit I was thinking, and didn’t have much of ANYTHING to do with feelings, but it STILL probably hurt yousht to hear that yousht cured my “big brother complex” or that you’re “not my type” or that I wasn’t sure how I felt about yousht physically.... WHEN IT WAS ALL FUCKING LIES I TOLD MYSELF TO TRY TO COMPREHEND WHY WE WERE NOT TOGETHER AS A COUPLE.... Sorry for yelling, it’s at myself... Kay?!?

[The “not my type” thing is weird... My type is Yorgos-looking... That kind of Italian.... And yousht don’t look a bit like Yorgos... So it’s true... You’re NOT my type... It’s a good thing, REALLY... You’re VERY unique... Get it?!?]

NEVER once did anyone (aside from when Jizz was awkwardly a friend) completely support my feelings for yousht,...

“Basta’s lips quivered with annoyance, but he bit back his reply and, without a word, put his hand under the black cloth.” — pg.377 (ugh I loved this. like we know he worships capricorn like a dog, but earlier fenoglio flat out told him capricorn couldn’t care less about what happened to him. more than that, capricorn asked basta to bring meggie and fenoglio — prisoners — into his home. later dustfinger says that basta would’ve slept on the threshold of capricorn’s room if he could but none of the men sleep there. so with all of this fresh in his mind, you can imagine him feeling quite hurt and betrayed. UGH I wish he had a greater arc surrounding capricorn…like even if we saw a few hints that his loyalty was starting to show cracks…idk what his arc is in inkspell so maybe I’ll sit tight for that)

Fic Writer Interview Meme

fandoms: Marvel in many forms, mostly the comics and MCU with a very deep love for the Ultimates. Also The Magicians (more the books than the show), Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (where I mostly watch from the sidelines), and lately Genshin Impact.

two-shot: I would say I have only one I would really count as such which is Latent Phallacy (MCU, Stuckony). (It was originally a one-shot but this was the one time were people asking for a second chapter actually inspired something)

most popular fics: That is Feeling Good Was Easy (MCU, Bucky/Loki/Tony) by far. (I think it has a lot to that it updated twice a week for three months...)

actual worst part of writing: The one where either I can't even remember why I started the thing in the first place or where I remember why the story idea was good but suddenly forgot how to write. Either of these happens several times a month...

how you choose your titles: I have started to like picking titles more, but also am less obsessed with finding the perfect one now. I try to play around a bit with what the story is about and see if that can be phrased interestingly. Also, song titles XD

do you outline: Yes, no, maybe. A method that works for outlining for me is something I have tried to hunt down for several years now. I usually have a lot of notes all over the place (notebook, random pieces of paper, my notes app, discord chats, my writing program...) and then go from there. Only definite rule after a bad experience: I don't start to write something anymore if I don't know how it ends. That way lies pain.

ideas you probably won’t get around to, but wouldn’t it be nice: My idea folder is plentiful, but the ones that are the furthest away but I still think about them a lot MCU, Bucky/Loki/Tony: The Wintersoldier and Loki are the villains that the Avengers just can't beat for good. One day they kidnap Tony and he finds out that a) they are a couple, b) the Wintersoldier is Bucky Barnes, and c) who's the villain depends which side you're on. 616, Steve/Tony: The Headmen have been weirdly active lately, and Steve really needs to get to bottom of that, especially since they have been targeting Mr. Stark. But somehow Iron Man seems weirdly unworried about his boss being in danger. Steve starts to believe it might be because there is more between his best friend and the Avenger's benefactor than they tell them.

callouts @ me: You need to remember that you write for fun. And you know that your motivation is fickle, so don't try to force it with a crowbar.

best writing traits: Ooof. I think I have great ideas for smut XD I also can tell an intriguing story if I find it first.

1- why did you choose your URL?

The Mandalorian gifted me an alternative to my man Mal Reynolds with zero ties to J*ss W*edon, played by Timothy Olyphant, no less, and then I had to tack on two S’s because somehow two people beat me to cobb-vanth AND cobb-vanths and I figured this was the next best thing.

2- Any side blogs? I used to have a Loki RP blog but good luck finding it

5- Why did you start your blog in the first place? A Harry Potter ship/character that shall not be named

Originally I just wanted the Space Husbands and their kid but I couldn’t actually get my url namesake in there without making them all specs, but then in the process of cropping one photo that happened and I thought Grogu peeking out from the corner was the funniest thing so it stuck. Might switch it to that one pull-zoom of Cobb in the Mando episode.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes! Every one usually, though sometimes if they don’t have an account I might gloss over it, just because I’m not sure if they would even see the response, but I usually do anyway! I appreciate every single comment so much, and when I update a fic I make sure to go back and respond to every comment the chapter before.

What’s the fic you’ve written with the most angsty ending?

Oh boy I don’t know if I have written anything with an angsty ending, like ever kjdhflkjshdf That’s generally not why I write, I want to be a comfort writer to my readers. Hm... (Also cause I don’t finish fics lol) I actually don’t have a good answer to this one and probably never will lskjdhf I guess maybe an old one on ff called “Annabeth Goes To War” because Percy is MESSED UP when she saves him.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

I don’t think so. The most I can think of at the moment was one where I got a comment like halfyway through the chapters just saying “I’m stopping here” and some criticism on pacing but it wasn’t like... outright hate. Mostly just unwelcome criticism. But I’m also not that popular and haven’t been since RWBY. Might have gotten some more hateful one on some of those, I think.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

What’s your all time favourite ship?

Oof. Honest answer is Tylash, my OCs you can find on my blog here. Aside from that, lately it’s been Peter/Gwen honestly. Been deep in their feels for some reason. Then Spideychelle. Then Percabeth.

What’s a WIP that you still want to finish, but you don’t think you ever will?

Every one on Ao3 skdjhflkdsf. The real answer is probably an old Percy Jackson one called Cafe Half-Caff I was really proud of that story and it was really well liked but I’m just kinda out of that fandom now so it’s unlikely I’ll go back to it. Or the last chapter of Arc’s Metalworks from RWBY because that was right before Season 3 ending happened lol and I haven’t written for it in a while.

What are your writing strengths?

I’ve been told I do a really good job describing action. Which I love doing, so I’m glad! I think I can also do dialogue decently, but that might just be because I find myself hilarious at times. 

What are your writing weaknesses?

I would say convey deep emotions/traumatic moments maybe. I tend to be a more action/decription based writer. I don’t do a lot of flowery speech, or do I do deep dive into emotions usually. I can hopefully make the reader feel things by the actions/words. I think my writing tends to be a bit bland or cliche too.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I think it’s great as long as there’s a translation, either at the end of after the section. I’ve seen it before. It’s actually super common in a lot of Spider-mom fics with nat speaking some russian, and I’ve gotten used to it (and learned to recognize little spider lol) 

What’s the first fandom you ever wrote for?

I think it was Soul Eater way way way back in the day. I can’t recall anything before that.

What’s your favourite fic you’ve ever written?

Ooo, I really do like Cafe Half-caff, but I think it might be Passing the Web Shooter, it has domestic spideychelle, Peter’s kid, and a happy non-death ending for him. It also has my favorite line I’ve ever written in fanfic I think:

“I love New York but I’m not going to let it take my dad from me.“

Love is Love and it’s the Most Important Thing: The Story of Pat and Terry A Secret Couple of 72 Years

The 2020 Netflix film A Secret Love stars the secret love of Pat Henschel and Terry Donahue. They are a lesbian couple who were together for 72 years, but their family didn't know until about two years before Terry Donahue passed away from a battle with Parkinson's disease. This film tells the story of how they lived and developed a lifelong partnership together, all while keeping their love for one another a secret, and after 70 years, they wanted to come out and get married.  Terry Donahue was a utility player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball league from 1946 through 1949. During this time, she met Pat Henschel, also an athlete herself. Both Pat and Terry had relationships with men; Pat had three prior relationships that ended in all three death. Pat took this as a sign and fell in love with Terry Donahue. Terry also had past relationships with men, but when she brought them home, with Pat, her relationship with the male was a cover to present herself as straight to her mother and father. Pat and Terry are from Canada but moved to the US to pursue Terry's baseball career. Terry and Pat lived with one another but described their friendship as "strictly platonic friends." It was expensive to live in the US, so they decided to live together. This is how they covered their true partnership with their family. Pat and Terry live through many LGBTIA historical events, and through times where being openly gay was unacceptable. Overcoming the societal norms and values for seven decades, they were finally able to marry and share their love with their family. A Secret Love based on a true story takes the viewers through Pat and Terry's life and their 72 years of love. This film analyzes coming out culture, heteronormality, sexuality, globalization of gay, and the nation and societal history around LGBTQ acceptance in a multinational view.

Terry and Pat became involved in the 1940s when being a part of the queer community was looked down upon. The film shows the famous clip of detective John Sorenson talking to a crown of young women. He says, “and for that reason, I feel there is no cure and because of the complete degeneracy of these people. They appear on the surface to be respectable, but they’re the lowest forms of people.” (Sorenson, 1966). Pat and Terry were afraid to come out because it wasn’t socially accepted. Bernshoff says, “Thus, while society had given a name to homosexuality, it simultaneously worked to erase it, to make it, “the Love that dare not speak its name.” (Bernshoff & Griffin, 03). To be gay or lesbian back then was to be sick and untreatable. In Chicago, there were gay and lesbian bars that were often targets of police raids. “Police raids on gay bars were neither new or nor unusual” (Gross, 40). Terry and Pat didn’t frequent these types of scenes because it was dangerous for gay or lesbian individuals. From Stonewall to Chicago, raids on the queer community were commonplace in the US. Throughout the film, they state how important it was for them to hide their sexuality and attraction to one another. The multinational views on the queer community from Canada to the US were negative; that’s why they had to hide who they were for seven decades.

In 1946 Terry Donahue began playing for the Peoria Redwings as a utility player. This went against gender roles and heteronormativity, as baseball was a man’s sport. The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was portrayed in the film A League of Their Own because they had to teach the women how to look and act a certain way. They had to take specific gender roles and gender nuances to appear as ladylike. A Secret Love uses Terry’s experiences to show how being lesbian, and a woman in the ’40s through the ’70s was difficult. The intersection of gender and sexuality in a heterosexual male-dominated country.

The film desexualizes and normalizes the partnership between a man and a man or a woman. In many queer films, there is a sexualization of queer culture, but in this film, it normalizes it. The director, Chris Bolan, Donahue's grandnephew, succeeded in normalizing and showing how a lesbian couple hid their sexuality from the world for almost a lifetime. Doty talks about how to utilize and display the mass-culture the way of life for gay, lesbian couples. The film uses its transgression of experience to show how media and this film tell the story of gay and lesbian couples before it was socially acceptable and federally legal. Doty says, "how many times do we get the chance to inform people about our particular queer perspectives on film, television, literature,  or music during conversations (or to engage someone else's perhaps unacknowledged queer perspective)" (Doty, 04)? This film shows the history of gay or lesbian couples and changes around their way of life and public reception of them. They were treated as sinners or sick people in the '40s-'70s, then finally being able to come out with the support of your family after 70 years. Pat and Terry hid a large part of themselves from view for 70 years; they could not be who they wanted to be.

This isn’t problematic but heartwarming and touching. While it is not an activist piece like many of the other films for this assignment, it shows how hard it was to be lesbian and love someone of the same sex. Since the early 2010’s it has become increasingly normal to be gay or lesbian; this film is an example of that. This film touches on aspects of this class like Stonewall and bars being raided, heteronormativity, and gender performativity throughout their lives. Terry and Pat are a part of the white middle class American and Canada; this leads them to be more relatable for most people in the US. The feeling and images this film drives home is like finding out your elderly family members are gay or lesbian. The association with family isn’t common in queer cinema as there is usually the issue of acceptance. Unlike many other queer films, this family was brought closer because of Aunt Terry and Aunt Pat coming out. These women felt like pioneers in history.

This film related to me because I felt like they were my family. I was reminded of my own family and experiences when I watched this film. When I saw these two women it reminded me of my own family and how we/I would love them no matter what. I was specifically reminded of my late grandma and how much love she showed for everyone and how sweet she was. My family is Christian and some of us are stronger in certain beliefs than others but two of my cousins are a part of the LGBTQIA community and we love them and want them to be themselves around us not hide it. I though this topic and film was so important because these women hid themselves from the world and their families. The coming out narrative is so scary for some that it cost them their families. This film exemplified how if I were coming out that I would want to be received by the people who matter most to me. I enjoyed this film because it showed what Pat and Terry when through for 70 years of hiding their sexuality from almost everyone. This movie reenforced how love is love and it doesn’t matter who you love. The issues we often discuss in class feel younger and more current, but this film takes us through the progression of queer in history.

This film shows the story of Terry and Pat coming out, but it also tells the history of the queer community from the 40′s to today. The film shows how these woman defied society and its views on same sex couples.

Cradle Awards Predictions

I want to make this post in response to this post regarding their Cradle Awards predictions. I would put it in a reblog, but it is going to be long, and I want people to know of some things in this that they may be unable to see if it was in a reblog.

A Reply to the Post

First of all, as some of the people in the comments of that post have said, no the top 3 of Seth’s voters are not bots. They are three individuals who teamed up together to give Seth as much votes as they can, and I say this with confidence because I know them from Discord. If you have been taking note of their names throughout the whole event, they weren’t called Seth Army the entire time, only at the end.

While we’re on the topic of Seth, your comment on Seth having a suspiciously high top 10 for someone with no route release is funny. By that logic, shouldn’t Oliver have a high top 10 especially because he was the newest route released? And yet, you have seen his numbers, he’s at the bottom four when it comes to the number of votes the top 10 gave. What’s wrong with people wanting to support Seth by giving him a huge number of votes for him? 

Now about the top 10, the way you predicted the results of the awards is inaccurate. Based on the results I have seen in the past Cradle Awards, top 10 says nothing about the outcome. The people in the top 10 for each guy can give all the votes they can give to their man, but if the people after them barely give them anything, then the suitor won’t rank high because they aren’t receiving votes from the other thousands of people who are voting for him. Every vote counts. You can’t base your predictions from only 10 people because it’s such a small scale, and you don’t see if the others following the 10th placer is giving their votes with the same effort.

Do you know about Zero’s top 1 last year? They gave him more than 11,000 votes and if you add the top 10 of each of the guys, Zero had the highest top 10. But he did not even make it to top 10, hitting 11th place in the final rankings.

Just to visualize what I mean, I have the final results of the 3rd JP Cradle Awards, albeit instead of top 10, I only have top 3. 

Adding the votes of the top 3 in the 3rd JP awards, these are the results:

Now why is that? Let’s broaden our scale and take into account the top 300 per guy.

To see the bigger picture, I multiply each of the numbers by 300 since 300 people per guy have at least gave out the given number of votes, therefore we have:

Lancelot: 107400 Jonah: 114900 Edgar: 110700 Kyle: 108300 Zero: 55500

Ray: 120900 Sirius: 140400 Luka: 96900 Seth: 34800 Fenrir: 90000

Harr: 42300 Loki: 42300 Blanc: 28500 Oliver: 105000 Mousse: 30000 Dean: 30600 Dalim: 53100

Based on this, this is the ranking in descending order:

It’s not completely accurate to the final ones, but it is closer than the one where only top 3 are taken into account. 

Tl;dr don’t just take into account a small amount of people like 3 people or 10 people per guy because it won’t give an accurate account.

Lastly, about what you said regarding Cybird rigging the elections and falsifying rankings, I was informed that there was a time Cybird rigged the elections in the past, particularly with Midcin’s election 3 years ago. I think if you had specified this, what you stated in your post may not have been as baseless as they appear now. But it’s especially because of how messy it got afterwards that it is unwise of them to do so, for two reasons. One, we all know how Cybird loves the cha-ching, and if they rig the elections to get the guy they want to put as first place to win, they can lose many fans. The reason why they even hold these elections is to see who the audience likes the most among the suitors to determine which guys to give more content to earn more revenue. Two, and this is more directed to the English version, there isn’t a point to rig the elections. At the end of the day, their main job is translating and reprinting past events from the Japanese version so international fans can enjoy the stories of Ikerev, and the events of the JP version cater to the JP audience and English translates those same stories so even if English team would rig the elections to bring, say Blanc, up to first place, there’s no point since JP has barely any stories for him. 

And especially now that Luka is in first place according to mid-ranking results, there’s even less of a reason to say they’re rigging the elections because if they did rig it, they would definitely have put Ray up there.

I have posted already the top 10, 100, and 300 of all guys in another post, but I admit that it wasn’t very well organized and had an ugly format. So for the sake of this post, I’ll repost it here. Of course, I’m not saying this is the final ranking, so we’ll still have to wait until June 10 login time. Meantime, take this time to breathe because the upcoming anniversary events are going to be good. And to everyone, you have done so amazing voting for the guy you like or the guy who deserved to win the category. All your votes count, and your men are proud of you for doing your best.

Choose your favourite opening line. A toss-up between 3, 11, and 13. But probably 3. Not every day I start a fic by announcing the death of the main character. I'm also partial to 11 because I remember @slipsthrufingers and I were spitballing ideas around Brienne and the concept of beards, and one of us announced this first line, and the other set up a gdoc, and the rest is history.
