It is not a betrayal to be happy while others are suffering. No matter what is going on in the world, in your life, or in the lives of those around you, you are allowed to do things you enjoy. You are allowed to smile. You are allowed to think about other things. Never taking time for yourself is not a sustainable or healthy strategy in any context, but especially not when you’re handling heavy emotional matters or working to make changes in the world. Those things are vital and important, but so are you, and without you, that important work couldn’t get done! So allow yourself to rest. To be joyful. To laugh and have fun. You—and life—are both complex enough to hold dualities.
Love,
Rosie Cotton-Gamgee

people actually went on about how game of thrones made it socially acceptable to be a fantasy nerd, as though the lord of the rings movies hadn't been released less than a decade earlier and left far greater cultural ripples and i am just
got may have made the adults feel better about liking fantasy, but lotr got into the kids' heads when they (we) were just young and impressionable enough to be absolutely transported and emotionally rewritten by don't you leave him, samwise gamgee and my brother, my captain, my king and and rohan will answer
lotr was rewriting entire generations' brain chemistry long before asoiaf and so obviously it's not fair to compare any post-lotr fantasy novel to it, and each book series was trying to do different things within their own spheres and so that also is not a fair comparison, but in terms of the cultural impact of the adaptations that came out within a decade of each other, saying that it was game of thrones that made fantasy mainstream is baffling
game of thrones could only run because the lord of the rings movies laid the path, and i will die on this hill

Thor 1 has so much banger dialogue and visuals that are that way because of the very specific context they’re in and I love that for them despite all the tilted angle shots 💯✨👍

It's honestly kind of funny when people in Silm fandom go on about how Tolkien's narrative is biased against Fëanor et al., and meanwhile it's like
Tolkien: his name was Curufinwë Fëanáro and he had raven hair and limpid grey eyes like tears (also like my wife, a major fucking hottie) and he was the greatest craftsman of the Elves and a brilliant linguist, he made the Silmarils and invented the tengwar and so many other things, oh and he had a great body and was an incredible warrior, and he and Galadriel were the most amazing of all the Elves in Elf heaven, and he slammed his door in Morgoth's face, and you wouldn't believe what it took to actually defeat him but it was really cool, guys, there were all these Balrogs and

One of the reasons I like killing Erestor is because him being actively afraid that he will not be let into Mandos or simply cast into the void is sooooo juicy to me. Like, several nights ago, I was thinking about him dying and Glorfindel keeping him company (ofc) and Erestor feels so much guilt for his actions as a feanorian (i think he was very feanorian) and he;s just barely able to whisper his fear to Glorfindel (yes Erestor is remorseful, yes he has turned his back on the ways of his past, and yet) and I just imagine Glorfindel gently cupping his face and wiping a blood tinted tear and eventually saying, just as quietly, that he suspects that Erestor will find Namo merciful beyond his belief.

Reading Sansûkh and I just gasped out loud because a character was rude to the point of self-endangerment. SHE SAID WHAT!
(It's lady Inorna in chapter 39. You're a human refugee in Erebor and call dwarves "viles little beasts [with] greedy grasping ways" to their face??!)

i know love triangles are a contentious topic but sometimes a love triangle shoujosei manga will create the best most pathetic wonderfully embarassing little man BUT he's only this good Because theres a love triangle that gave him that character arc. or sometimes they'll give you the greatest gal pal on earth but only after she tries to kill the main character because they both have a crush on the same guy. i understand love triangles can be frustrating but sometimes they are. a necessary evil

It occurs to me that I feel like I’ve spent a fair amount of time thinking about Elros’s motivations for why he chose Men but little and less on why Elrond chose Elves. Which is an oversight.
But what metaphysical, philosophical reasons might one have to choose the fate of the Elves? The immortality and god paradise are enticing, sure, but that feels like its far to shallow for Elrond, especially considering he didn’t go to the god paradise until literally the curtain call. I also hesitate to say it was to have the time to help others over many years- which is what he ends up doing- because that’s so dismissive of the Elvish Condition
There has to be something worthwhile, philosophically speaking, to taking on Elvish metaphysical suffering and Elvish metaphysical joy.
I just don’t know what it is and I’ve never bothered to wonder and still’ve got few thoughts on the subject.
Which I think is funny, and far more telling about the Human Condition, because even in fantasy books, we bend over backwards to try and explain why one might want to be Human and never even question why one wouldn’t want to be one.

Regardless of your motivation, it takes time to make any life change, major or not. It’s a myth that struggling with effecting these improvements indicates anything about your willpower, your strength, or your merit. Whether it’s trying to cultivate or break a habit; end an unhealthy cycle, recover from a crisis, or any other change, you are doing something really hard and it’s natural for there to be obstacles and periods where you aren’t making the progress you’d like to. Though it can be really painful to feel like you’re sliding backwards after having succeeded, the fact that you’re trying at all is testament to your bravery and persistence. You are worthy of the same love, care, and support regardless of how much you struggle. No progress is made all at once--it’s the little changes stacked on top of each other that eventually build up to make a difference, and each of those little changes is valuable in itself. A bad moment or perceived failure is not the be-all-end-all of your journey. Be gentle with yourself: you’ll get there at your own pace. ♡
Love,
Nimrodel

📽 action!: rank all six of the films (or three if you're a hater)
Answers for this LotR ask-game.
Ahh okay so at this point I have to confess something terrible: I still have not seen the third Hobbit movie. I'm sorry! I just couldn't do it. The fuckery of it all, especially in the second movie with Mirkwood and Thranduil and Legolas ("a lowly Silvan elf" what the FUCK what the fuck PJ WHAT THE FUCK), was just too much for me. Character-assassination is one thing, and I thought after Denethor I knew what I was going to be getting with Thranduil but NOPE! It was literal world building assassination and I just CANNOT.
Don't get me wrong, Lee Pace did an amazing job and actually seeing Mirkwood was amazing and it was genuinely delightful to see Orlando put those ears on again; but the OuTrAgE that filled my heart at the yeet-ing of what minimal canon we even have for the Mirkwood elves was just intolerable, and while I did mean to go see it, really I did, I just...couldn't actually get the motivation to go before it was out of theatres. I've heard the EE are better (less studio fuckery) so I'll watch them someday! Honest! I just...haven't. yet.
And as to the Lord of the Rings trilogy...man, I don't even know how to do this. In terms of which is the best film, or in terms of which one I enjoy watching most, or in terms of which on hits me in the heart hardest or...? I don't know if I can objectively rank my feelings about these movies even in my own brain because RotK ends with Into the West and I have FeelingsTM about the Undying Lands and Sea Longing okay. So the last scene of RotK at the Grey Havens is a fucking spear through the heart every time and I can't even describe the knot of feelings it engenders, and I think overall TTT may be my favorite but also it has Plot Issues that piss me off even more than the Plot Issues in RotK I think,...yeah, we're going to do this in terms of Film Crafting rather than personal favorites because I'm having too many feelings lmao. So! In order of most-well-done-movie to least:
Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
Return Of The King
The Desolation of Smaug
An Unexpected Journey

my daily uniform in high school was always some version of Sweater Or Buttoned Shirt Tucked Into Pants because I hated how t shirts fit me (always so fucking LONG because im short) and then one day in college i magically realized that I could just take a pair of scissors to my t shirts and cut them so that the hemlines at the bottom/arms actually fit me in the right places.......... never looked back bro all my shirts are at various states of mutilation now but its so awsom........ Im Living Life...... in high school u never wouldve caught me dead in a tank top or any form of cropped shirt but thats because i didnt see the light. its also so practical........... its always 10000 degrees in the school studios and i'm always lugging heavy shit around... and all my hobbies involve full motion of my rotator cuffs okay they need breathing room. So That's The Story How I Became A Sleeveless Shirt Wearer like mac from its always sunny. and the cropped shirt..... POCKET ACCESS! POCKET ACCESS! a long-ass t shirt will drape over all ur pockets. absolutely diabolical when you keep as many treasures within your pockets as i do. anway.......... thats my speech about how everyone should mutilate their shirts if its applicable to them. peace on earth.

My mother has watched one episode of ROP and is now waiting for her family to leave so she can watch the rest, since she loved the first episode but (perhaps for the best) doesn't have much Silm knowledge.
She thought Gil-galad and Elrond were being very obnoxious to Galadriel, and we were talking about the "let's get you to a nursing home, Grandma" dynamic, even though my mother found Galadriel cooler and more engaging than any of the men.
My mother: And why does this king have any say over her, anyway? He's just some guy.
Me: Well, he's the king of her people.
My mother: That doesn't make it right!! He doesn't have any relationship with her or anything.
Me: I mean, I don't like it, but he is her great-nephew.
My mother: Wait, what?
Me: Okay, in fairness, Tolkien had different ideas about exactly how they're related, but I think he pretty clearly settled on Gil-galad being the grandson of Galadriel's brother.
My mother: And Elrond?
Me: Yeah, he's even further down, he's—her cousin's great-grandson, I think.
