Moves & Countermoves (Part 6)
Summary: No one ever wins the games, even fourteen years later, Y/N is still playing.
Prologue | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5
Tumblr media
Peeta is down by the river, camouflaged in the rocks after Cato slashed his leg and left him for dead.
“Ah ha ha,” Chaff smiles when he spots Haymitch with an entire pitcher of rum. “So this is how the Capitol treats it’s favorites.”
“Had to steal it off the cart.” Haymitch chuckles allowing his friend to slip in between him and Y/N.
“Steady now.” Y/N teases, a hand to his back until he’s seated.
Chaff knocks her shoulder with his own, “what’s the matter, baby?”
Y/N has nothing but love for her husband’s best friend. However they are two peas in a pod and when they get together…there goes all the liquor. Back home in twelve, Haymitch has been known to have a drink or two, still able to enjoy his wife and children. This place brings it all back, the horrible things he’s done, everything he failed to do. If he wasn’t drunk, he’d surely lose his mind.
“I wanna send Peeta medicine,” Y/N explains.
“Sponsors leaving you high and dry? Never thought I’d see the day.”
“Not the sponsors, Haymitch made him a deal.”
“Who am I to disrespect this poor boy’s dying wish?” Haymitch quirks a brow.
“And his wish is to-”
“No parachutes. Save Katniss.”
“Katniss,” Chaff drawls.
Two of their tributes have formed an alliance. Rue and Katniss hatching a plan to blow up the career’s stash; lightning fires to draw them away.
“This green stuff is gonna smoke like crazy, as soon as it’s lit, move on to the next one.” The girl on fire warns.
“Ok,” Rue agrees, “we need some kind of signal; in case one of us gets held up.”
“Like what?”
“Here, watch this.” Rue lets out a tiny melody, which the birds rings back.
“Mockingjays.” Katniss realizes, “that’s brilliant.”
“We use them back home to signal the time.” Rue says, shifting the backpack on her shoulder. “If we hear that, it means we’re ok and we’ll be back real soon.”
“We’re gonna be ok,” Katniss pulls her in for a hug, running a hand over her hair. “Hey, I’ll see you for supper.”
————————————————————————
For once in her life Y/N is grateful for the Capitol broadcasting the action only, in the viewing room. A split screen between Rue lighting the fires, the careers chasing smoke and Katniss making her way to the cornucopia.
Clove and the others leave a single boy behind to keep watch. As the red haired tribute from five lily pads around explosives to steal food, the watchman catches her in his peripheral. Taking off after her into the woods.
Katniss lines up her shot, missing the corner of the apple net by just a hair. She takes a step closer, a few calming breathes later the tip of her arrow pierces the bag and out tumble all of the apples.
She’s blown back by the force of it.
“Oooh,” Chaff winces.
After a moment Katniss gets her bearings, heading back to Rue.
The boy keeping watch pays the price, Cato snaps his neck before giving him a chance to explain.
Rue is well on her way to light the last fire when she hears the explosion. Katniss did it. Then the trap set by the careers falls, she tripped the wire, a weighted net.
“Shit.” Y/N covers her mouth. Katniss…please hurry.
“Come on, Rue,” Chaff says, under his breath. “Work your way out.” He coaches, as if she can hear him. She does try, just like he taught her, but the net is too heavy.
When Katniss finds the final fire unlit, she whistles their signal.
“Get her out.” Haymitch rocks back slightly in his seat.
“Get her out.”
“Get her out.
“Get her out!”
The people of the viewing room echo. Y/N turns her head as the room builds to a collective chant.
“Get her out. Get her out. Get her out.”
It isn’t unheard of for spectators to voice their call to action. Though they are more concerned with the entertainment value than the life of the child.
When Katniss gets no response, she races toward the pile of sticks and leaves meant to start the last fire. Still no Rue.
“Katniss! Katniss, help.” Rue calls from beneath the net.
Katniss cuts her loose, Rue safe in her arms. “I’m here, you’re safe.”
The viewing room cheers are short lived. Marvel sends his spear flying, only to be met with Katniss’ arrow. When the cameras pan back to Rue…the damage is clear and irreversible.
Y/N excuses herself. She cannot watch, she cannot pretend, she cannot breathe. Scrambling into the nearest private room with the curtains drawn. Pushing them back with little care before realizing that it is occupied.
“You look ill, dear.” The Capitol woman gasps. “Come, sit down.”
“I’m so sorry to barge in like this.” Y/N apologizes, it’s not anyone she knows.
“Never you mind that, the pleasure is mine. Let me get you a drink.” The woman begins waving down a waiter.
Y/N grabs the ice bucket, “can I throw up in here?” Doesn’t matter, it’s coming up.
“Oh my stars, you poor thing.” She fans the victor as best she can, while continuing to wave one hand out of the privacy curtain. “Must be something you ate.”
“What can I get for you?” The waiter asks.
“Some water, to start and a fresh ice bucket.”
“Yes, right away.”
The woman takes great pleasure in ‘nursing’ Y/N back to health. With water and something close to a bland cracker.
These people are not inherently bad, Y/N realized that years ago. Conditioned in their belief and out of touch, but they are not evil. I don’t hate them…I hate what they do.
It’s not long before Haymitch is tearing back curtains to find her. Letting out a sigh of relief when he does.
“Haymitch, what a pleasure.” The woman holds out a hand.
“Great to meet you, love the dress.” He kisses the top of her hand, using it to guide her toward the exit, “give us a minute, will you?”
“But of course.” The woman is awestruck. The victors of district twelve, in her private room! Hailing over everyone who is anyone. Mouthing, “they’re in there,” motioning toward the fabric that separates them.
“I need you to listen to me.” Haymitch whispers, kneeling in front of Y/N. Wiping away any remnants of vomit and tears.
Y/N nods.
“Katniss gave that little girl a proper send off, you know as well as I do, the gamemakers and Snow aren’t happy about it.” She created a martyr.
Again she nods.
“I’m gonna talk to Crane, see what I can do for damage control.” Keep Katniss alive.
“Ok." Don’t let them kill Katniss.
“We’re gonna get you a mint and then I need you to walk out of here like nothing is wrong. Can you do that?” He tips her chin up, holding her gaze.
There is worry in his eyes, guilt and sadness. Her husband is afraid and he needs her. “Yes.”
“Good,” Haymitch gives her a reassuring smile, taking her into his arms.
————————————————————————
Katniss receives a parachute of bread a while later. After the silence is louder than the cannons and the artificial sun has set.
Haymitch is still negotiating, Y/N figures he must’ve sent it. Until she sees the note attached, from district eleven.
Y/N makes her way over to Seeder, sitting alone in the opposite corner.
“It was for Rue,” she older woman explains before Y/N can get a word out. “My district spent days scrounging up the money, the sponsors finally came through. We had enough to send some for Thresh too.”
“You could’ve sent him both.”
“My people wanted Katniss to have it.” Seeder informs her.
“I know she…appreciates their generosity very much.”
The answer is dry, rehearsed. Y/N is young and still does not understand. “I knew a girl once, she was kind and brave. She played the games and never let them play her. For the first time, I thought there might not be a victor. Because she was lying there, bleeding out and her partner was there, bleeding out…nobody was killing anybody,” she pauses. “Haymitch had to fight like hell to get you out of that one, they wanted your family-”
Dead. “I know,” Y/N stares down at her hands.
“I saw something that day, and I see it in her.” Seeder motions toward Katniss on the screen. “A good, genuine person with heart. They tried to snuff it out of you, beat it out of you; but I still see you. You hold onto your heart and you never let anyone take it from you.”
“Thank you,” Y/N blinks back tears.
“Attention, tributes, attention. The previous rules allowing only a single victor have been…suspended. Two victors may be crowned, so long as they both originate from the same district.”
All hope is not lost.

a helping hand (kyle spencer) x (fem!reader)
Tumblr media
“ Hey get me another shot Frankenstein “ Madison shouted to Kyle, our butler, while holding up her shot glass
Kyle ran towards Madison and followed up with her request. All four witches in this academy were always treating Kyle like some dog, especially Zoe and Madison. Zoe and Kyle seemed to have something going on but looks like Zoe cut ties with him. You were always intrigued by Kyle, you wanted to help him. You wanted him to feel loved in a way.
You are the fifth and newest member of Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. You arrived a couple of weeks ago and were starting to warm up to everyone but you weren’t fond of the other witches. It was kinda just you and yourself, you do share some glances with Kyle but nothing more. Even though you wanted more than that, you wanted to mean something to Kyle.
“Hey bitches listen up, there’s a party tonight anyone wanna join me? “ Madison announced making you look up from your food.
Everyone agreed to tag along except you, you weren’t really into parties. All the wild people and loud music scare you. So you decided to stay back to do some revising on magic.
“ You have no life y/n, “ Madison said chuckling
“ Nope just don’t like parties “ you shrugged
“ Alright then you’ll have to take care Kyle and make sure he doesn’t kill himself “ Zoe instructed
You nodded and continued eating while the others chatted about the party.
Walking up onto the spiral stairs, you entered your room to take a hot shower before checking on Kyle. When you came out from bathing the house was quiet, indicating that the four witches had left to attend their party. You wore your clothes and walked into your room, you saw Kyle sitting on your bed and you jumped getting scared by the sudden presence.
“ Kyle you scared me “ you laughed
“ s-s-sor-ry “
You stepped closer to him and a gush of his scent washed over you. You can smell sweat all over him so you asked.
“ Kyle, did you shower yet? “
“ I d-don’t kn-now how to, “ he said slurring his words
You instantly felt bad, you forgot Kyle was from the dead and can’t do normal basic things. But an idea surfaced in your mind, you ran over to your nightstand and took out your spell book. You were going to attempt to fix him.
Flipping through the book in a hast to find the spell that you vividly remember reading about. There you found it, page 364 titled ‘ bringing back a zombie’s sanity ‘. You needed the following ingredients to make this spell successful. Mud, dirt, water, mint leaves, rose petals, and a piece of the subject’s hair.
Mixing all of the listed ingredients, put it over a fire to boil it. Then let the subject breathe in the substance for a minute. After that bind it all in with a kiss, this was pretty simple you thought as you reread it.
You collected all of the items and went back to your room eagerly, you wanted Kyle to have another chance to live normally again.
You and Kyle sat in the ring of candles surrounding you both. You started crushing the mint leaves and rose petals to dust then combining it in a pot with the mud, dirt, and water. You emit a small flame under the metal pot with your powers, making the substance boil.
“ Kyle, you need to inhale this substance for about a minute alright? “
He looked at you and then nodded, putting his head on top of the pot. After a minute or so you needed to move on to the next step, kissing him. You were quite nervous but you do want to kiss Kyle just not expecting your first kiss to be like this.
“ Okay Kyle now we need to kiss now “
He looked up and it seemed like his eye lit up hearing it. You leaned into him pecking at his delicate soft lips but the short peck became a full kiss. You pulled away and put out the flame asking how Kyle felt. He tested his voice and it seems to have worked. He wasn’t stuttering anymore, it made you smile to know that it work. Before you knew it, Kyle was engulfing his large hands around your body thanking you.
“ Thank you y/n, I couldn’t be more grateful “
“ Of course, I’m happy to help “
Kyle pulled his head back to face you, hands still on your waist. You stared into his dark brown eyes then slowly moved to his lips, gosh you just wanted to kiss him. The kiss you shared with him earlier only made you crave more, bravery took over your mind and you smashed your lips against his.
His soft plush lips started to move against yours, his tongue inviting itself into your mouth. You both break away to catch your breaths and you watched as a smirk took over his lips.
“ That wasn’t part of the spell but I liked it “

late to the unpopular opinion party but!!.
i think the way people act as though aaron is some kind of monster for not seeing how much andrew cares about him is excessive. i get where they’re coming from but taking a second and putting yourself in aaron’s shoes makes his whole deal a lot more understandable.
we all know through killing tilda, andrew was killing aaron’s abuser, but i think an abuser being a loved one in the past makes everything a lot more complicated and aaron had every right to be upset and grieve. and if i were aaron, being locked in a bathroom would not sit right with me no matter how well intentioned it might have been.
as readers we see a lot of how much andrew cares for aaron and i get that it’s easy to be annoyed at how aaron seemingly doesn’t understand how much he does but it seems unfair to dismiss how hard andrews actions really were on aaron even if they ended up dramatically helping aaron in the lo by run.
BIG agree. I've seen it a lot where people seem to get like? insulted? that Aaron kind of resents Andrew for how he's treated but look at it from the eyes of. literally anyone who's not Andrew. even Neil seems to sympathize with it (and certainly understands it) he just deals with it bluntly because the way he sees it, we don't have time for any of the twins' negative feelings. and a good amount of fans seem to take that at face value which to me just shows a complete lack of comprehension depth. like they expect Aaron to be all !!yay!! because "his abuser has been killed" as if. that's all.
and THE THING IS TOO is that. i think killing Tilda was forgivable. i think the bathroom trauma was forgivable. because what Aaron wanted more than anything was a relationship with his brother, and he could've come to terms with the sacrifices that had to be made IF he actually got what he wanted in the end. if Andrew had given Aaron time to grieve and collect himself and then they allowed themselves to develop as brothers, i think they would've had a very different relationship by the time tfc kicked off. but Andrew doesn't work like that and instead of recognizing what Aaron was going through he gets resentful and angry and locks up against Aaron.
and STILL Aaron would've taken anything Andrew was willing to offer. but all Andrew seems to have is cold shoulders and snide comments about dead mothers. one of the most heartbreaking lines to me is that "how was i supposed to know you cared you wouldn't even talk to me unless i said something first". like?? HOW is he supposed to think Andrew gives a shit about him when that's what he's working with?? and HOW can you hold that against him? stg it's like he's in the wrong for not being able to read Andrew's mind tf

Promptober: Day Eighteen
Tumblr media
Steve Harrington x fem!reader 648 words.
“Why did we agree to this?” Steve grumbled, waiting slumped against the Henderson's hallway wall.
You smiled, rolled your eyes good naturedly and tapped your boot to the boys. “Because Dustin asked.”
Steve scrunched his face and repeated once more, “like I said, why did we agree to this?”
You really give him a sharp kick that time, silently scolding him for being so dramatic considering how much you knew he loved the younger boy. But you tried a different tactic anyway, crossing the hall to loop your hands around his neck and pull him down to you.
“Because you’re so lovely,” a kiss, short and sweet to his cheek. “And so nice… and El has never been trick or treating before and she asked you to take her.”
You weren’t sure if it was your affection or the mention of the girl, but Steve was sighing, face softening albeit grudgingly and he mumbled something about the gremlins not even being his to look after.
But then a rush of chaos descended from the stairs and Mrs Henderson was giving you and Steve countless warnings about bedtimes and what doors not to knock on and did you know that some crazy person in Ohio once handed out candy with razor blades in them?
“Uh, I think that was an urban legend, Mrs Henderson,” Steve tried to reason but the woman was too busy fussing over son and his comically large proton pack.
A camera flashed, the kids whined and Max tried to fake stab Mike with her prop knife five times before you and Steve managed to wrangle them out into the streets.
“Hey! Stabby!” Steve yelled after Max, the redhead immediately wandering off into the dark with her Michael Myers mask on. She looked back at Steve, and despite hardly even seeing her eyes, the boy knew she was glaring at him. “Wait up, we’re not supposed to let you out of our sight.”
“Maybe you’d move a little faster, if you let go of your girlfriend, Steve,” Dustin yelled back and the kids all snickered before running up the path to the first house, hammering impolitely on the door.
You laughed, pressing your face to Steve’s arm as he swore under his breath and gripped your hand tighter in his own.
“Little shit,” Steve whispered to you.
“It’s the sugar,” you reasoned, pushing closer to the boy because it was barely above forty five and the wind was whipping cold air and dead leaves at your ankles.
Steve snorted, “it’s his attitude.”
But you both stood watch at each gate, the beginning of each garden path as the kids collected more and more candy, the roughhoused with each other along the way. And when El got a little overwhelmed by all the shouting and masked figures running around town, Steve sandwiched the girl between you of both as he carried her ghost sheet  under his arm and held her hand in his free one.
He told Will all of his best jokes to recite, high fived Lucas when he managed to snag the full sized candy bars from Mrs Kennedy and he shook his head fondly when Mike tripped over a bike someone had left on the sidewalk.
“You’re a certified father,” you teased him once El had run to link hands with Max again, all the kids a little ahead but still within sight as you all walked back to Dustin’s house.
Steve nudged you gently, pulling your joined hands into his pockets for warmth. His cheeks were pink, from the cold and your comment, eyes rolling despite the way he flushed with a little pride.
“Shut up,” he mumbled without any heat, pressing his lips to your head to show he didn’t actually mean it. You pressed closer, dipping your chin into your scarf to keep warm and hide your smile. “You’re a menace.”

Something I would love to see in subsequent World of Eragon books is Murtagh riding Saphira. Even better they go on a mission together.
Had this idea (not sure how feasible it is) that Murtagh’s mission to expose and defeat the Draumars takes him to Farthen Dur. Saphira firmly advises that she be the one to take him. She has the better rapport with the Dwarves and can use that to protect Murtagh, and if Thorn begins to feel claustrophobic, there isn’t easy access to the open sky and the dwarves could get hurt in his haste to break for open air.
Murtagh agrees for Thorn’s sake and safety
There’s reluctant agreement from Thorn plus a subconscious thought that he is not good enough for his rider but it’s decided nonetheless.
Murtagh is obviously nervous as they approach Farthen Dur. Not to mention a bit guarded from Saphira. The journey through the Beor’s is like a journey down memory lane. They speak of their journey, they speak of the first major moral disagreement between him and Eragon. Safira gives her input, Eragon was young and very set in his moral code. But she does agree that if Torkenbrand had fought, the results would’ve been the same. Murtagh notes that she doesn’t condemn his actions, she accepts them far easier than Eragon did, and she seems to understand his mindset better. (like Thorn, she notes that Murtagh seems to be part dragon. She is quite pleased with this little tidbit of revelation of Murtagh‘s character. Murtagh can feel her approval, it briefly helps his mood.)
Throughout their flying, she explains how Eragon sees Murtagh and acknowledges that the opposite nature of their upbringings do cause a rift of understanding in their relationship.
He faces Orik for the first time in a long time. (not many ideas for this part.) Later Orik tells him that he will never forgive him for killing Hrothgar but as long as he is king he will allow Murtagh and Thorn to keep their lives as thanks for their part in helping Eragon defeat Galbatorix.
The grudge is something that Murtagh expected and accepts with grace as well as heaviness in his heart. However, Orik’s decree that their lives are secure under his kingship surprises him.
During their visit Murtagh and Saphira stand in the very place Eragon and Arya stood when the Twins’ ambush happened.
Murtagh: That’s where it all went wrong.
Saphira makes a regretful sound and moves her head towards him in an approximation of a hug.
Saphira: I am so sorry, Murtagh. Our best chance to save you from Galbatorix would have been right here. I flew as fast as I could but I was too late. Arya went to look for you in the tunnels but when she found your bloody clothes and couldn’t see you by scrying she assumed the worst and us along with her. We failed you, and you and Thorn have suffered greatly for our failure.
Murtagh: (touching Saphira’s jaw) Thank you. But you were supposed to think I was dead. The twins told Galbatorix’s spy master Yarek that I was here. Yarek was the one who made the plans for my abduction and told the twins what to do.
Saphira: you told Eragon our first night here that you didn’t want the Empire to know where you were. Bringing you here endangered you and sealed your fate. Exactly what you were trying to avoid.
Murtagh: True. (he reminisces about his first time in Farthen Dur. He would not have met Nasuada if he hadn’t come. Would not have experienced her surprising kindness, and in a way Ajihad’s kindness. He was treated far better than he ever expected to be by those two.)
Saphira also brings him to the star sapphire. She explains how she fixed it using the collective emotions of the dwarves present, as well as her own admiration for the construction of Tronjheim and overall craftsmanship of the dwarves. She tells him how angry and heartbroken they were at her for destroying it in the first place. How they forgave her after she had made amends. She gives him a realistic hope for forgiveness his own debts. Opening himself up and sharing his experience, allowing other people to connect with him, will go along way in redeeming himself. He’s unsure sharing such painful raw parts of himself. Saphira assures him that he can show as much as he’s comfortable with, but should also show enough to cure ignorance.
After a moment he states his own forgiveness of her for not flying fast enough to save him, and for not being able to march on Uru’baen sooner to help save him and Thorn. Another approximation of a hug with her head and neck, while he hugs a section of her neck.
Because it wouldn’t be a true World of Eragon segment without some sort of fight turning everything sideways, some sort of conflict happens. Orik and Murtagh each have moments where they protect each other.
Murtagh explains his mental situation and decision to kill Hrothgar. Orik gets a level closure. He still feels utterly betrayed, and will not forgive him but he thanks Murtagh for his explanation all the same.
Murtagh asks Orik for permission to go to Ajihad’s tomb and Hrothgar‘s tomb to pay his respects.
Orik grants it.
In front of Hrothgar’s tomb, Murtagh considers making a dwarven rite of respect as a member of an enemy clan would make to a fallen rival dwarven leader. Saphira encourages him saying would probably be a good idea and would go a long way in making amends with Durgrimst Ingeitum. She calls it his own Star Sapphire. Murtagh is a reluctant at the political spectacle of it and how it will make him look (unsure if he wants to make himself vulnerable in this way). He didn’t join Hrothgar’s enemy willingly. But he still slew him under Galbatorix’s thumb, and more or less in Galbatorix’s name. Saphira tells him to think on it a little more, and to follow through when he’s ready.
He makes a promise that he will return with Thorn so they can pay their respects together.
In front of Ajihad’s tomb, he weeps. Regretful and devastated that he couldn’t save the man who spared his life and gave him a chance to prove himself. Regretful and utterly ashamed of what he did to Ajihad’s daughter. Knowing full well that Ajihad would never let him in the same hallway, or even in the same wing as Nasuada after her torture if he was still alive. Any chance however slim or imagined he has with her now would be near non-existent. (Murtagh later wonders if Nasuada had a part to play in Ajihad giving him the chance that he did. It breaks his heart even further that the kindness of these two has been returned with torment and failure to protect them). Saphira gives him a moment alone with his tears before reminding him of her presence. She gives wisdom and insight into Ajihad’s character and gives an honest assessment of the possibility of a relationship between him and Nasuada. Given their reputations and political positions it has a very slim chance of working out. She’s careful not to give him false hope for the future, but alludes to the fact that Arya and Eragon’s relationship seemed to not work out, and yet they are on good strong terms.

i think the reason mr martin collected all the objects was because he was studying the students death to see how to crossover. now i don’t know if he actually wants them to crossover or to be stuck with him in the school forever and that’s why he’s keeping their stuff from them. i agree with you on maddie maybe not coming back to life in her body because she literally said ‘my mom killed my spirit’ and janet knocked it out of her so how would she ever get it back? i just really want them to keep her actually dead and not have this all be for nothing.
Yeah, it sounds like we're on the same page about things. I just wonder how Mr. Martin seems to be exempt from a lot of the ghost rules? He was able to lock doors & keep journals without those things resetting? I suppose the things he collected that belonged to the other ghosts were things they had on them when they died (like the ball from Wally's game), so those items are exempt, but unless Mr. Martin was carrying a big stack of notebooks, those should reset? He clearly has some abilities that make him exempt from the rules, but I really wonder what the extent of that is. And I'm definitely very interested to learn what his ultimate goal is.
I've been trying to figure out how to explain why Maddie's "death" being a real death feels important to me... I want to say, firstly, that I'm not against happy endings in general. In fact, I feel really strongly that something is not inherently more profound just because it's sad, and it bothers me that we often treat it that way. My favorite endings are usually ones that are hopeful, but not completely tied up in a big happy bow. That being said, when done well, I love a good tragedy and I love a good happily-ever-after. I'm not a big fan of literary suffering purely for the sake of suffering. So it's not that I'm automatically against a happy ending. I just feel that it's really important to make sure that your ending, whatever your ending, feels genuinely earned. Obviously, that's subjective. For me, one thing that can make an ending feel cheapened is undermining the weight of death. Personally, I feel that the show actively asked me to emotionally engage in the concept of Maddie's death and carried that through pretty much every element in the show (the mystery, her relationships from her life, her relationships from her afterlife, etc.), so if she gets some kind of "get out of jail free" card, it makes so many of those tragic but beautiful moments (like when Maddie realizes that her mother living on false hope isn't good/fair) feel hollow. I worry, with Maddie's body being okay, that the show might choose to take the direction of this being an experience that makes Maddie & those around her really appreciate life, rather than an exploration of grief/loss/death. While that's not a bad story to tell, it's not the one I was invested in, and I personally don't feel that it is as fitting to the concept/tone of the show, or as complex or interesting. But, of course, that's my opinion & I'm sure there are people who completely disagree.
Regardless, I really hope we get to see a season 2 and see where these writers choose to take this story!

I love reading your insightful thoughts on topics regarding mha and especially touya you alone bring my hype up
I just wanted to ask, after having read your rei meta (which I agree with wholeheartedly) I can't help but feel kind of a distaste towards some actions towards some members BECAUSE of the narrative framing
Rei calling her son "dabi" in the hospital scene was so distasteful considering she was ready to forgive her husband after everything but it almost narratively seems she holds no such regard towards the son whose demise she took part in regardless of intention
Also in the mental hospital scene where fuyumi was telling that "natsuo is the only one who isn't letting begones be begone" like hello? we are talking about you dead brother who mer his end due to your father's actions?
I don't know I am pretty sure it's because of horikoshi and I shouldn't think like this blaming the characters because he is the writer after all but the way he writes rei and fuyumi sometimes is so distasteful to me that I almost wish touya never returns to that home where he was labeled a black sheep simply for being self aware because of how they used him as a scrapegoat especially in the hospital chapter
Ps i am well aware touya will probably reunite with his family and all will be well but it's the narrative choices that kind of make me dislike them even endeavor who is pathetic is at leadt enjoyable to read in a sense that he stays true to character to an extent. Shouto is on the way of reaching an epiphany about how to reach his brother as family instead of a hero so i still have hope for him and natsuo is still true to character kind of in the hospital chapters but fuyumi and rei got me fighting against everything in me to not dislike them. Even toga and freaking afo calls him touya but his family is stuck with dabi like bffr
Hey! First of all, thank you for reading my stuff! I'm glad it can bring you some positivity in these otherwise trying times as a Touya stan.
Now, to answer you... I debated how best to approach this reply, because there's a number of ways I could go about this. But you specifically mentioned the framing, so I'm gonna build my argument on that.
So. How is Horikoshi framing Touya in the eyes of the Todofam? As you said yourself, they’re treating him like the black sheep to Shouto's golden child, and uniting to stop him.
From what I understand, though, you seem dissatisfied with the execution because you think that while every other fam member acts coherent about either blaming or wanting to rescue Touya, the Todoroki women are outliers because they have instances where they go back on that resolve to save him to blame Touya instead.
Am I getting this correctly?
If so, I think there is a problem with that conclusion. It's not just the women who go back and forth, and in fact, I think Rei and Fuyumi are the mildest ones of the bunch. But for reasons that I'm going to dissect later, I also think the fandom… latches on to them as exceptions, and in the process doesn't understand that it's meant to be a family narrative in which all of them are imperfect.
(putting this under a cut for length)
I think it’s important to remember that all the Todorokis agreed that Touya needs stopping. Not just Rei and Enji, or not even just the two heroes, Shouto and Enji. All of them gathered in that hospital room to discuss family matters, and they reached that conclusion as a collective decision.
Now, I’m stressing this because the language they used is peculiar. We all noticed that they said that Touya needs stopping, not saving. But when it comes to the Todofam, that word carries a certain weight, and I don’t think it was used randomly here.
As this person pointed out in this post, Touya was always asked to “stop” whenever his self-awareness or his attempts to be acknowledged disrupted the family dynamics. This is less apparent if you haven’t checked out the revised flashbacks in chapter 302. But the fact that Horikoshi went back to alter the storyboard and narration for the tankobon release means he wanted to draw more attention to something, to make it clearer for the audience. And indeed, the why becomes clear when we see Shouto confront Dabi and echo the same words: “please, stop.”

The Todorokis haven’t yet reached a place where they can fully sympathize with Touya. In Shouto’s case, it’s because he doesn’t know his brother; he can empathize with Touya’s circumstances, but not with Touya’s reasons. After all, Shouto is a successful creation. He never faced the brunt of the entire family’s blame and disappointment. As a result, he doesn’t understand that this approach is doomed to fail, because it echoes the scoldings Dabi’s used to.
Whenever someone tried to reason with Touya, it was always framed as if the root of Touya’s unhappiness (and the family’s by extension) was his refusal to quit his ambitions. Basically, they told him that it was his fault, and not his father’s for putting those ambitions in him. Even if it’s Enji who’s guilty of rewriting Touya’s sense of self around an impossible goal, the one who’s held accountable for it is the victim.
Not only do they all ask Touya to stop over and over (and not his father), but Touya’s also blamed for the fallout of Enji’s abuse. First, he was framed as the reason for Enji to keep making replacements, then for why Enji isolated Shouto from his siblings. It’s always because of him. Because Touya couldn’t quit.
Even now that the family supposedly knows better, they’re still struggling to move on from that pattern. Just like how back then Touya was always singled out as the disruption, as the element of unrest, Dabi is still pushed into this role. Except now he’s singled out as the disruptive element that exacerbates not only the inner dynamics of the family, but of society as a whole. Once again, his refusal to stop is making things worse for everyone willing to just lay down and take it in silence. Because of it, he’s not regarded with sympathy. Instead, all the flaws he addresses are his responsibility to bear. It doesn’t matter if those issues existed before him. He becomes the suitable scapegoat.
Now, all of these are things you seem well aware of. But you still singled out Fuyumi and Rei as subjects of your ire, and I don’t think that’s entirely fair. If this was something we could blame just on one character, or just on Rei and Enji as parents, we wouldn’t have heard the same words repeated by multiple family members. We would’ve at least seen someone push back against them.
Instead, even Shouto is still torn between seeing Touya as a villain and as his older brother. Linkspooky wrote an excellent post on this recently that I encourage you to check out.
This makes sense for him because Dabi was just a villain to him until a while ago. He has no solid memories of Touya because as a kid he wasn’t allowed to exist in the same room as his siblings. Yet, he has several memories of his brother as an enemy. He fought against him. Dabi kidnapped his classmate. So that mental divide is at least somewhat justified. It’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that your presumed dead brother, who you only saw as a normal kid in your sparse memories, committed atrocities and tried to kill you and your dad (and himself).
However, I also think this divide works on a societal scale as well. During the present arc, we’ve seen the hero kids struggle to reconcile the idea of the League as victims with the crimes they’ve committed. Those two sides should coexist; one doesn’t exclude the other. Hurting people doesn’t mean someone can’t have hurt you first. The kids seem aware of this, unlike the rest of society. They see the League’s victimhood. The problem is, they still think in terms of which side weighs in more, which one deserves more of their heroic efforts. And because the people they’ve hurt are multiple, while their victimhood only involves a single person, the good of the many always ends up being more important than showing sympathy.
This is what happens with Uraraka, for example. She remembers Toga’s tears, and wants to help her smile, but because Toga is part of the League and wreaked havoc in several cities with the PLF, killing many innocents… that sympathy becomes conditional. So Uraraka looks at the destroyed landscape to remind herself that there’s also another side of Toga. One less worthy of her concern. One that deserves it, because this suffering she’s experiencing is Toga’s own fault. If Toga wants to live her version of a happy life, she tells her, she also must be ready to live with the consequences.
This sentiment is the same that Shouto later directs at his brother. You can’t blame dad for the lives you took, he tells Touya, because you did those things, not Endvr. They are your own fault.
The problem with this approach is that it asks victims to put their shit together on their own, for everyone else’s convenience, without anyone else involved in fixing a broken system. And most importantly, it also asks victims to face the consequences of their actions, while also turning around and not holding abusers accountable for their own.
The fact that this idea is explored through Toga and Shigaraki as well makes me think it goes beyond the Todofam’s dysfunctionality. But to bring this back to them…
Do I think it’s distasteful that the framing treats Touya this way? Yes. It hurts to watch on a near constant basis, even when I know there’s likely a reason for it. But at the same time, I dislike on principle when people hold Rei and Fuyumi to a higher standard than the men in the house for displaying character flaws.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not accusing you of purposeful malice or anything like that. You're clearly struggling against your instinctive dislike, and you came here to discuss it, so I presume you're looking for reasons to either reinforce it, or to let go of it. I hope that by the end of this, you will find some more reasons to be kind to them regardless of the quality of the writing.
What I’ve noticed during my time in this fandom is a certain... expectation, almost...? for women to always perform the role of "perfect victims", with the penance of getting the brunt of the fandom's anger when they don't.
What does that even mean?
In short, women in fiction aren't given the same leniency as their male counterparts when it comes to displaying said flaws. While for men having any is typically regarded as a good thing because it gives the character depth, when women do something “wrong,” they get crucified.
I believe this happens in the bnha fandom as well, particularly amongst Todofam stans. While Shouto, Natsuo and Touya are all allowed to be imperfect, and their rough edges get widely recognized as faucets of trauma, Fuyumi and Rei aren't given the same sympathy.
As I mentioned above, Shouto gets to be undecided and to direct unkind words to his brother without the same backlash from fans. Natsuo is allowed to put faith in Enji because he shows reluctance to trust his old man. But the women are hated because they take a less belligerent approach to Enji’s atonement.
I believe that the reason why so many fans struggle to like Fuyumi and Rei is because they misread them. Their lack of outright hostility is widely interpreted as forgiveness, when in fact, it’s not quite written that way. I find that equating their willingness to let Enji try to be a better person with forgiveness is a flattening of their depth as abuse survivors.
I think much of the blame Rei faces isn’t actually rooted in anything particularly bad she did in canon. Most of the things we can blame her for are also things that Enji did alongside her, and Enji did them with far more cruelty and selfishness. But! I also think that some people have an instinctual dislike of her because she’s written with a lot of stereotypes of submissive femininity in mind, and that understandably makes a lot of folks uncomfortable.
What I’ve seen is that because Enji is a pos, people have turned to Rei in hopes she could be a better parent, or someone okay-ish enough to make up for the bad, you know? And that’s totally fair. I’ve done the same. But I also think that in the process, people sort of created this idealized version of her that then didn’t live up to her canon characterization. They—perhaps subconsciously—wanted her to be a good victim and a good mom, when she’s meant to be neither. I think she’s more nuanced than that, and that perfect victims don’t really exist anyway.
But because they expected her to balance out Enji’s bad, they don’t really know what to make of a character who’s now written to parallel him in many ways. While she did not hit her kids, she still hurt them in other ways. While she tried her best to oppose her husband’s will, she still didn’t oppose it in a way that mattered when it came to Touya’s mental well-being in particular. Just like Enji, she was shown to be neglectful and avoidant of her eldest.
This makes her a nuanced character. Just like Touya, she can have done horrible things and still be a victim because the two things can coexist. But expecting her to be just one over the other, ironically, results in the same scapegoating Touya’s being subjected to by the narrative.
The fact that she’s a victim and that she ended up hurting others as a result of unaddressed and spiraling mental health problems aren’t factors that are battling for dominance. You’re not supposed to look at her and think “the bad she’s done outweighs the good, hence she doesn’t deserve any sympathy.” If you’re not doing that for Touya, why are you doing it for her?
To address the one complaint you mentioned about her, the fact that she calls her son “Dabi.”
She does that once.
Tumblr media
In fact, if you look at it closely you’ll notice something interesting. She calls him “Dabi” when she’s thinking of him as a villain. When the topic of fighting comes up, and with it, the emotional baggage that “stopping” Touya already has as an ongoing theme. But Rei also calls him “our son” when she’s apologizing to Hawks for the burns, and she calls him “Touya” when she’s confronting Enji. To me, this confirms the idea I talked about above, the mental divide that makes it harder to reconcile the villain with the crying boy they remember. Rei, like Shouto, loves Touya, but her reaction isn’t perfect because she’s an imperfect victim living in a flawed world.
In the grand scheme of things, the issue with the framing of Touya as a bad sheep does exist, but I don’t blame it on Rei specifically. I think there’s a fundamental difference between her calling her son “Dabi” that one time versus Enji privately thinking of Touya as a mass murderer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Putting this out there for those who can’t read japanese. The word (in kanji) Enji uses here reads tairyousatsujinsha. Which means indeed “mass murderer.” We only know that he’s even referring to Touya because the furigana (which typically shows the actual reading of the word in kanji) reads a different word, musuko, “son.”
So, sure, might be more internally coherent as an asshole who can’t face his actions, but getting angry at Rei for calling Touya “Dabi” seems rather… mean-spirited imho, when it’s not even on the same magnitude of alienation Enji shows for the blood of his blood here. He doesn’t even call him the more generic word for villain. Not his chosen villain moniker, either. He goes straight for the moral upper ground of calling attention to Dabi’s crimes, when he can’t even properly own up to his own.
Anyway. Moving on, there’s also the topic of Fuyumi. You mentioned that her line “letting bygones stay bygones” was in the hospital chapters, but I couldn’t find it there. Were you by chance referencing this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
because if so, I believe the above panel on the left comes from a fan scanlation. If you compare it to the official Viz translation, her words don't carry quite the same edge. Now, the wording is similar enough that it might be an instance of Viz correcting the release at a later date (it has happened before. Japanese is a tricky language).
But since you quoted this line, let’s discuss the nuance.
In the picture on the left, Fuyumi appears less sympathetic towards Natsu. It reads like she's blaming him for being too stubborn to let the past go, while also minimizing the extent of his trauma as something that can be just… brushed off. As something that should stay in the past.
As opposed to that, the version on the right puts more emphasis on the process of grieving, on Natsuo's mental well-being. "Can't seem to let go" still carries the same implication that closure on Touya’s death is desirable, but her phrasing is soft enough that it comes across like she's sad about Natsuo’s sadness. Like she wishes he'd let himself find some peace, after all this time.
I'm bringing up both these versions because I wanted to compare and contrast them to the original. See, the jp text says this:
Tumblr media
Which translates to: "Only Natsuo can't lower his raised fist."
Being fair to the eng translation, all these versions more or less say the same thing. She's still singling out Natsuo for reacting differently from the rest of them. Which does indeed seem like she’s blaming him for it.
However, the original wording has a completely different nuance imho. By bringing attention to his raised fist, Fuyumi is commenting on Natsuo using anger as a coping mechanism to deal with his grief. The emphasis then is not so much on whether or not she thinks he should "let go" or "let bygones be bygones," but on the fact that Natsuo is stuck in that defense position. His fists are permanently raised, and he cannot let them lower. He's constantly poised for a fight, and as a result, he always slams headfirst into one.
I think this confirms my reading of Fuyumi as a mediator, as someone trying her best to de-escalate all the fighting in the house.
In this post I explained why I think she's stuck into a part herself. As the big sister who stepped into the role of caretaker at a young age, Fuyumi displays all the traits of someone who learned early on to fear explosive tempers, and resorted to acting like the patient one to protect her siblings. She sorta acts like a… fire-retardant blanket, so to say. She attempts to put out fires before they can get bigger by sucking out the air that keeps them alight. She’s shown doing this with Natsuo during dinner, and she’s shown often playing mediator to avoid explosive tempers from bursting.
I think a lot of people read her as someone pursuing her idea of a perfect family because she remembers a time where things were better and wants that again. The problem with that, imho, is when people call her selfish for it. When they say she’s pressuring her brothers into forgiving Enji like she did. I find that—at least the latter part—a malicious misreading rooted in badly hidden misogyny. Why is she not allowed to want things that are at odds with her brother’s wishes, but her siblings are allowed to want things that are at odds with hers? Why is she perceived as selfish for it, but her brothers are not? And why is the reading of her as forceful in this pursuit so widespread, when she made no attempts to steer Natsuo back in both times he stormed out the room?
It seems to me like the same issue with Rei. Fuyumi needs to be a good victim and a good sister, or be crucified if she dares have flaws and imperfections. But again, just like Rei, she’s a victim as well, and she has trauma too. I think people shouldn’t presume that her feelings for her abuser are clearcut and black and white.
I know it’s easy to dislike her because she seemingly “forgave” Enji, but so far she’s never stated that. It’s the audience’s inference that she has. The fact that she wants a shot at having a more normal family doesn’t mean she thinks Enji did a 180°. It just means she’s willing to give him a chance to be a better person, which is something that Shouto’s also shown doing. But because Shouto remains hostile while Fuyumi makes an effort to treat Enji like a person, it’s widely assumed she must have no complex feelings for her father, or that she’s okay with moving on.
I find that an oversimplification. Don’t get me wrong, I know the Todoroki women are much less fleshed out than the men. Rei doesn’t even have a character profile yet. But because of this, I wish the fandom didn’t jump for their throat based on those few sparse lines we do have. Just because Horikoshi hates women doesn’t mean we should all follow in his example
Let’s all allow ourselves to think these characters can have depth. To experiment and play with ideas when something’s yet unconfirmed, to headcanon and theorize and fill the gaps of missing info like we do for other (male) characters. I promise it’s much more fun than getting angry or upset at all the failings from canon
If that's not your cup of tea... that's fine, but I hope I was at least able to make you consider something you hadn't thought of before

A Thin Layer of Rock
You guys! You know what we have to talk about first. The Moment™️
They have my whole heart, how could they not? Beau was going to kiss Jenny, no one can take that away from me 😌💕 They need to be together. Like, yesterday. And her going to him, because she needed to see him after a rough day, made rougher no doubt because he wasn't there, I- she said she'd let him know if she needed him, and she called him and came over because she needs him 🥺💓 She loves him so much, he's where she feels the safest, they need to have their soft happy ending 🌹 I need scenes where she finds out Beau cares just as much as she does, asap. And the way he looks at her, the way he brushed her hair back, but mostly, he was just touching it 🥺 He's fallen so hard, I just can't wait for him to make his next move. They love each other so much 🥺💕 The love and adoration on his face when he looks at her says it all, and the fact that she's so overwhelmed with emotion in this moment that she's getting teary, I just- they deserve to be happy together!
Okay, now we can rewind 🤣
Them once again showing their expertise in that interrogation, nudging, poking, collecting information even when Walter wasn't talking? I stan a badass sheriff duo 💯
And then them flirting with the plus one thing? I see what you guys are doing 👀😌😏 And Cassie being so happy watching them falling even more in love with each other 🥺 She ships it 💛
The Beau-Beau thing..... No, I agree with Cassie, this is cringy 😬 I don't know why, but I get a visceral reaction everytime she says it. I don't like it.
I'm going to be honest, I'm not feeling the implication here that a 15 year old with no training and a secretary is going to crack a case that trained cops and detectives have been trying to for 20 years. It feels like undermining the people the story is really about.
The person who kept calling Jenny? Now we know it was either her mom or whoever is after her mom, and when they hurt her..... they will be catching the sheriff's hands 😡 And I'm here for it 🥰
"Patience is.... it's just an eight letter word, starts with a P." "Guess it's an argument for nature, huh? Cuz he lives in the... 😂😂" Lmao, how is Beau so funny? He really was on fire 🥰🤣👌🏻
I'm a little sad that Paige didn't really fall for Walter and is only helping for the money. I thought that was starting to be an interesting dynamic, creepy and messed up as it was 😢 But now Buck's kidnapped her. Girl really can't catch a break, huh. I know she's bad and a thief. But, she's also really fun as a character!
I really did think Meredith was dead, so that does change things. But only just a little, I'm not entirely convinced Buck is the Bleeding Heart killer. He's deranged alright. But is he this particular killer? 🤷🏻‍♀️
That scene with Carla and Avery, they really are so perfect together, I truly need them to work things out, asap, and for them and Emily to be a big, happy, family again. They even have all the same hobbies. Getting involved in things they shouldn't and being condescending towards Beau!
The nerve. The effing nerve of Carla, calling her ex, the same ex she's been treating like dirt for the past two years (and probably their whole relationship) to bail out her new husband. She really has no shame. And she called him, whining, then instead of being grateful or even polite, continued to snap at him. Like he's bothering HER? This is not a healthy dynamic, it's abuse, & I can only imagine how much worse it was when they were married. Beau is a much better man than Carla ever could deserve, he'd have every right to her deal with her issues herself, considering the way she's always treated him. He doesn't owe her anything 😒
Cassie and Cormac having that difficult conversation 😔 I have to wonder how things are really going to go, when it all comes to a head, if he'll really be able to ignore that they're his family. Especially when he finds out that Walter probably actually isn't the killer.
I'm kind of salty they split up Beau and Jenny during a case involving a wedding, it really could've been something, them working the case together. BUT we did get this gem out of it: "Heh. For the right guy, I might try again." "For the right guy, huh? You met him yet?" Commence Jenny blushing and changing the subject 🥺💝 She could've just said no, but she loves Beau so much already that she can't even deny it, are they trying to make me cry? 🥺💕 Also, Pops ships it too 😌
And, I can live with them doing their own thing this episode, because it made the trailer scene that much more intense 🥺 The way she's tired and worn down, and the first place she thinks of going is to him. And he was so worried, bounding down those steps to her to make sure she's okay ♥️ And the whole moment is so tender, the way he looks at her, the way she looks so overwhelmed with emotion, the way he caressed her face and brushed back her hair 🥺😍 (And major props to Jensen and Katheryn, once again, they had Beau and Jenny say so much without so many words. They always make every character, every relationship so real, and I just love how tangible they've made the care these two characters have for each other 💯) Like, this isn't ambiguous any more (was it ever really?). Beau and Jenny have feelings for each other. A lot. They need to have their happy ending 🥀
And something that I have to point out about Jenny and Beau, is that I love how every case affects them. Being around so much chaos and death, you'd think it would eventually become the norm to detach. But they care so much that every case hits like the first 😫🥺💛
Carla. What can I say about her? The hatred I have for this woman. First she left Beau because he was grieving, continued to treat him worse than dirt, married someone else, and now that HE is moving on, suddenly she's trying to ruin that. Even in that scene, when Jenny says she'll go, she looks so entitled and smug like "yes, YOU go, I have every right to be here." She didn't even bother to say hello, just addressed Beau. Truly cannot stand her. I did think it was really funny though that when Jenny handed her the beer case (because she's a better woman than Carla could ever hope to be, and was being nice despite Carla's behaviour in that very scene), Beau snatched that case right away like "MY Jenny, MY beer 😡"
I do think what's really interesting is that Beau offered to let them stay so they wouldn't get killed, and Emily is STILL complaining with her mouth, and Carla is still being passive aggressive and condescending with her looks to the trailer. Like it's beneath them. Seriously, Beau should just let them stay in Avery's house, let them die, see if I care 😒
Something I did like is the fact that Beau felt like he should explain himself to Jenny about why his entitled ex and child were there. To me, that just shows that he's committed his heart to Jenny, without even realizing it 🥺💕
But man, Jenny in that last scene is breaking my heart, she was trying so hard not to cry. They need to fix this, asap. Next episode, her and Beau need to talk some things out, and I need a lot of nice Beau/Jenny scenes to make up for this 😭💔 And, I'm thinking about like, how long was Jenny calling Beau? 🥺 He probably didn't have his phone on him, he would never ignore her, but after what happened, that probably made her even sadder 💔 After the attack, I need the precinct (or the hospital) to call Beau about the incident at Jenny's house, and for him to be so worried and run to her, to make sure she's okay, to need to see her with his own eyes, to take care of her 🥺💕
And I hope they wouldn't, but if they now made him leave her for his psycho ex, that would be so disrespectful to Jenny from the narrative 🙃 And it would be extremely disrespectful to Beau. There's no way a man like him spends all that time with Jenny, flirting, opening up, AND going in for that kiss, if he had even an ounce of romantic feelings for Carla. My Beau would never. Sooo...... they'd better not try some clownery here 😒
And anyway, all I have to say is look at the difference between the way Beau looks at Jenny and every interaction with Carla. That one glance held more love & affection than every single forced scene with Carla combined, even the ones of him reminiscing and saying he cares and the hugs.
Every interaction Beau and Jenny have with each other, you can see their concern and respect for each other, their care. They always try to be there for the other, have the other's back. And this is a relationship where they can let each other in without being punished for it, without worrying that their feelings will be used against them. And you can see their feelings for each other in every glance, see their pull in the way they move together and gravitate towards each other.
The only logical next step is showing that Beau's stuck because of guilt & regret, not love. And once he & Jenny open up about their pasts & heal, once he's allowed to heal from the case in Houston, all the related mess, for him to realize that he's been over it for a long time & to move forward in his life with Jenny, who deserves to be loved and have someone who always has her back, to heal from the trauma with her family, her mother. Just.... they deserve a happy ending together 🥺💛

Grey's Anatomy: Haunted (19x04)
Happy Halloween!
Cons:
I actually wish they'd done more with the spooky holiday vibes. It was cute to see Bailey in a costume or whatever, but they could have had slightly more fun with the whole concept. What about Meredith's younger two children, did they get to have a fun night trick-or-treating? What about Teddy and Owen's kids? Felt like this episode could have had more checking in with the various families.
Say it with me: Nick is boring. This week he was nothing more than a boring sounding board for Meredith to bounce off of. I miss when she dated interesting and dynamic men with personalities. Sigh.
I thought that Jules's little rant about the cadavers being disrespected was a bit odd. Surely in med school she had to dissect a cadaver? She must know that donating bodies to science includes medical training purposes? I just thought it was odd to make her a mouthpiece for this. Almost like it was just there so that Owen could reassure us, the audience, that stabbing a dead guy's body and pretending there was still a way to save him wasn't actually as ghoulish as it seemed. To be clear, it is kind of ghoulish. But it's also an opportunity to learn, and that felt like an obvious truth that a resident would already know.
Teddy and Owen... I'm getting tired just from typing their names out. This week, we see that the resentments have piled up. We see Teddy advising Link not to go there with Jo, because dating your best friend just ruins everything. We see Owen warning Winston not to let his resentments with Maggie grow until it ruins the love part of things. So... are Owen and Teddy getting a divorce? Good, if so, let's get it the hell over with please. And if they're not, can they please just shut up for a while? Go away somewhere? Leave the show, and give me Jackson back? Sigh.
Pros:
Helm! I like that we've had Schmitt and now Richard each stopping by to chat with Helm as she works her bartender job. I'm surprised by how much I enjoy checking in with her, and how much I hope she gets everything she deserves from the hospital and then chooses to come back. Maybe Meredith will make a late-game realization about herself, leave boring Nick, and fall in love with Helm. Sigh.
While I wish there had been more Halloween vibes all around, I did still like the trauma lab, the way the interns worked together, and how Lucas maintained that team atmosphere by asking if all of them could scrub in on the prize surgery, instead of just him. We're seeing this show reflect some hopeful and real trends in the medical field at large. Our original group of interns never would have agreed to take collective credit for an accomplishment. Can you picture Izzy or Alex or Cristina offering to share their surgery with their friends? No! And yet Lucas offers it, and it's a sign that maybe things can improve. They even all go off to have breakfast together. Blue is clearly the outcast in terms of trying to make everything a big competition, but even he allows himself to be pulled into the camaraderie, which I like.
As a contrast to how much Teddy and Owen annoy me, and Meredith and Nick bore me, I like the more realistic, grounded, conflicts that Maggie and Winston continue to navigate. Maggie has a blind spot when it comes to her work, and she's definitely been steamrolling her husband in the office. Winston respects and admires her authority, but for the good of their marriage, he's considering switching specialties. I could see this conflict playing out in ways that annoy me, but I'm hopeful that we'll see a more realistic and interesting development of this plot thread from here.
One thing I almost put in the "cons" section but I'll reserve judgment for later... I heard that Ellen Pompeo was only going to be in eight episodes this season. For some reason I assumed they'd be spaced out throughout the season so we wouldn't even feel her absence, but instead she's been in these first four, looks like she's going to be in next week's as well, which has me worried she's going to be vanishing, maybe even moving away, for the entire second half of the season or more. However, I think the setup for this works okay: Zola's anxiety is continuing to cause problems for her, and Meredith is determined to get her into the right environment to foster her incredible mind and heart. We're seeing Meredith be the kind of mother she never had, endlessly patient and calm, giving Zola a chance to feel her feelings and process them. It's insane how long this show has been on the air, that I've watched the fictional character of Zola grow up this much.
Speaking of patient parental figures, I love that Richard noted Schmitt acting out, and he stepped in, was firm with him, but also admitted to his failure and said they were working him too hard. That was huge! I'm so happy for Schmitt that he has this opportunity, and also that he has Richard advocating for him and noticing when things are getting to be too much.
I also liked the Simone and Maggie stuff, where we learn that Simone cracked under the pressure in her last program after being subjected to racist and sexist behavior from her colleagues and would-be teachers. There's video of her freaking out and destroying property that's made its way online. This is a rebuilding year for Grey Sloan. I love that they've taken in the misfits, the people who deserve a second chance because life sometimes doesn't line up the way you want it to. And Simone showing the video of her breakdown to her fellow residents, them all being impressed and saying how they would have reacted, was honestly kind of sweet, reinforcing this teamwork thing our new characters have got going.
I don't know, I'm a little wary about Meredith's departure but honestly I'm having a good time with this season thus far, by and large! I'll definitely hang around to see what's next.

Starting with English right out the gate.
Emotional damage already this is gonna be interesting.
I don’t trust this. Kinn you absolute sap.
Lunch with dad, this is the most awkward thing I’ve ever seen. Kinn looks so happy but the only reason they are back in the house is so Porsche can get his sneak on.
He’s so happy. I feel so bad for him. Porsche please tell Kinn about the photo, I know you won’t but please lie to me.
Porsche thinks Korn is connected to him through his dad. For some reason I don’t agree with that.
Vegas….what are you doing??? Are you being domestic?!?! Oh fuck Kan. You dick, he made that, how dare you. Someone fuck him up. Someone hug Vegas please, he might be messed up but he doesn’t deserve to be treated like that. Fuck you Kan.
Back to Porsche yay. Kinn, rude. Waste of coffee. TELL HIM WHAT’S WRONG. Dang Chan. You will definitely not talk later cause you are hopeless. Korn, don’t do this. Korn, I don’t trust you in the slightest. Yeah it’s just lung cancer. Damn it Porsche. Will you two just communicate, please. Please.
Hi Pete. Vegas you good??? Pete the hell, oh this is terrible. Y’all are devolving. Vegas… you made a mess. Don’t hurt Pete please. No no no no no stop. Please stop, now. Stop. Right now. Stop this.
No offence T I don’t care that you had a bad dream, my boy Pete is in trouble. I now care about your dream. Thank you T. Yes T lay it all out. Tell Porsche everything. T is the best character in this show and you can’t tell me differently.
Anyway. Vegas put down the knife. Pete….I wanna hug him. Vegas apologise, thank you. Pete, your hand my dude. Man you two are messed up. Therapy ok, lots of it. Let’s all calm down for a second. I genuinely think Vegas was scared for a hot minute. He’s definitely gonna leave but maybe not right away?? Never mind. Right away, damn. Bye Vegas.
T. He isn’t dead, chill. Kinn, you are not helping. T, are you burning money???? Seriously. T, babes you are insane and I love you. T no, baby don’t sing. Pete shows up like a ghost and Pol and Arm two bodyguards are gone and Porsche turned into scooby doo the way he jumped on Kinn. 🤣🤣🤣 I love that T hugged him even though he thought Pete was a zombie. Now that’s true friendship. Watch out Pete has some wounds. Guys he is injured, stop it. Pete, Porsche can see right through that smile. He’s not gonna tell you. Porsche please just hug him, gently though.
Oh my god Kim. You’re here, hi. Porchay, oh shit he blocked him. I’m now very sad. The song, oh my god. He has a collection of pictures, my heart. I’m broken. Kim, don’t cry you really will break me. I can’t handle this.
Oh great show us poor Vegas. Now he’s crying. Stop it. Pete if you start crying I quit. I quit. I can’t do this. I want my happy place.
Yay Porsche, make it better. Damn it Porsche. Yeah take Pete clubbing that will fix him. Porsche please please talk to Kinn.
T what you doing. Pete that is a Vegas shirt. T is singing again. Stop that. Wrong song for this moment. Read the vibe my dude.
Porsche where you going?? Oh shit Vegas. Don’t beat up Vegas, no yeah he deserved that first hit. Wait Porsche did you call Vegas. No one tell Pete how close he was to Vegas. Porsche this is not a good idea. Porsche you used Pete. Porsche how could you??
I’m worried. I don’t like this. I think he wishes he could shot you. Great now they’re crying together. That isn’t helping. Stop with the English, I can’t handle it. Dang it Pol, you have shit timing. We were making some kind of progress.
Kinn. Kinn sweetheart, you are in a bubble and it’s gonna burst in your face. He legit asked Porchay so he could meet Porsche’s parents. That’s kinda sweet. Awwww Porsche looks happy. Don’t take this from me. He is raking Porsche over the coals. Please Porsche please, you won’t have a better moment than how. Damn it. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🚨🚨🚨
Wait a minute. Is that what I think it is. It that a pool!!!!!! Someone called this and now I’m terrified what they said is gonna come true. Camera man has been to put work with this scene. Oh my god they said it. They actually said it. Also that far away shoot said everything. Okay I know he’s flexible but you’re gonna break him. Shit, no. Kinn wake up. Uncle??? Is he dead. Kinn wake up, dang it Kinn.
The smiley face on the note, so cute. Oh shit he grabbed Porchay. T they are okay, don’t worry. Oh shit Kim was gonna cut a bitch.
Vegas and Porsche, this is gonna be a weird team up. Uncle isn’t dead, fuck. Seriously, uncle is useless. Vegas can and will kill you. Actually please Vegas kill him. 😱😱😱 Korn actually set Porsche up to kill an “innocent” man. What is happening?!?!?!? Uncle is dead. Right before he could tell Porsche, thankfully a memory has been unlocked. Kinn and Pete team up to get their dumbass boyfriends. Who shot uncle. Dang it Korn. Found Porsche. Korn he has a gun to your head now isn’t the time.
Are you kidding me!!!!!!! I can’t wait a whole week!!!!!!! I was not ready or prepared.
“The longest episode” man they know how to pull us. That teaser was not enough. I can’t. Someone help me steal a tardis.

Why you should read 'The Witch and the Beast' manga by Kousuke Satake
Alrighty folks, time to talk about this manga:
Tumblr media
Looking at the covers, you're probably thinking ‘oh, this is some cute paranormal romance kinda thing, right?’ Well, that where you’re wrong… this manga is a hell of a lot more action packed and filled with horror than you’re thinking, and while there’s certainly a degree of… ‘something’ going on, it’s subtle, it’s complicated, and it’s anyone’s guess where it’s going.
Heads up that there will be a few spoilers in this. I'll start off by dropping some fight scene panels so you know I'm not fibbing about how action packed this manga is:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a dark fantasy where the world is one filled with magic, where witches are considered the biggest threat, and have a reputation as being evil (which while not all are, there are some super bad ones out there). Basic plot is about our two main characters taking on witches.
Tumblr media
So, who are our main characters? Well, first off we have Ashaf. He’s a mage working for ‘the order of magical resonance’, which specializes in dealing with magical problems/threats. He’s polite, calm and collected, and acts like everything is going to plan (even when it very much isn’t). Carries around a coffin and has crow familiars so a treat for you goths out there. His motives are… ambiguous but we’ll get to that in a bit.
Tumblr media
Our second character is Guideau, someone who is violent, fowl mouthed, rash and… pretty much Ashaf’s complete opposite. But she’s agreed to work with him and the order. Why? Well, she’s been cursed by a witch, and needs to find that witch to break the curse… What curse you ask? Well… minor spoilers, but that’s not Guideau’s actual body… Guideau’s actual body is a beast of world destructive power that looks like this:
Tumblr media
Yep, that’s right. Massive non-bindary/genderfluid energy there… my personal interpretation is non-binary in a sort of ‘whatever pronouns are most convenient go, but idgaf I just wanna kill that witch’ way, based on the fact Guideau never objects to anyone using female pronouns or male pronouns or states their gender.
In fact, this whole manga has massive queer vibes… As well as another character later on who plays fast and loose with gender roles, there’s a way to temporarily break a witch’s curse (giving Guideau access to his original body), wanna know what it is? You have to kiss a witch… so yeah, we get scenes like this:
Tumblr media
I really wasn’t expecting this and personally this whole aspect of the manga was a treat, though I get that might not be a factor for everyone.
There are some great side characters too, my personally favourite being a necromancer and her servant. She’s very sympathetic/kind to the dead and believes in treating them with respect, which is refreshing to see.
Now, Ashaf and Guideau… it’s complicated. Guideau’s motive is simply to find a way to remove her curse by locating the witch that cursed her, and that’s the only reason she agreed to work with Ashaf. As for Ashaf… well, he says their interests align, and I’d say he definitely has some stake in this, but there’s definitely some stuff he’s keeping quiet about and that’s something we’re going to slowly have to unravel. But I think it’s fair to say they’re growing closer, the question is… where exactly is that leading? I genuinely don’t know and that’s part of what I’m enjoying the most, I pretty much never get invested in stuff like this but I'm hooked. Big spoilers ahead but look at these panels and tell me you’re not intrigued…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, as for the world building… I really love how mages write to cast, it’s a nice little detail, and I enjoyed learning about how necromancy functions in this world. The witches also seem to have quite varied powers, which can make their fights seem more unique and means you don’t always know what to expect from them (unless you know their lineage). There’s vampires too if that’s your thing, elementals, and who knows what else going forward. I’m curious to learn more about ‘the order of magical resonance’, there’s definitely some mystery there too… Solid stuff on the whole.
I just… really love this series, and I’d love more people to give it a try too. My only warning is there is some gore, so if that’s an issue for you unfortunately you might have to give this one a pass. Otherwise, please give it a shot! It deserves attention.

Shipper Sam or Clueless Little Brother Sam?
There’s some excellent aspects to both, if Sam is aware of Cas and Dean's pining it means Sam suffers more and Sam's life is suffering and it’s very funny sometime 🫠
On the other hand, Little Brother Sam being miffed (especially at first) that Dean has a friend that doesn’t want to ALSO hang out with Sam and that’s some bullshit according to all younger siblings, because if a younger sibling wants to play all together too you haaavvvveeee to let them 🥺. And Sam getting to the point where Cas is considered his best friend ALSO (by sheer time and proximity rather then any charm on Sam's end or any taste on Cas' lol) but still being a bit miffed that their COLLECTIVE bestie still favors Dean and not Sam, who is way nicer ok? Bah
(Of course we can kinda get both worlds where Sam's aware of ONE of their feelings and thinks it’s unrequited but they still love each other so they’ll figure it out as besties 🥰)
Relatedly, Eileen either needing to be told what's up with the 2 of them, figuring out right away, or knowing before Sam does are all equally good.
Her thinking that it’s some weird angel or American thing that Cas and Dean are Like That only to be told noooo it’s weird and just them
Her figuring it out and then kinda tutting at Sam over him teasing his brother about his BF (f), like he did when he discovered Destiel from the play, and him being like ahhh it’s just a joke, some brotherly banter about Buddies! And Eileen being dismayed that her hot boy friend is a stupid boy like his brother 😔
Or Eileen AND Sam figuring out as dummies together, treating it like a mystery lol
when I'm reading fic, I generally prefer Clueless Little Brother Sam, but I do enjoy some Shipper Sam. as usual, the show wants it both ways with everything: whether destiel is real; whether Dean and Cas have a profound bond or Dean even treats Cas well or at all differently from how he treats Sam; whether *Cas* gives *Dean* special treatment or treats him at all differently from how he treats Sam; whether Sam notices these differences or the eye-fucking or the personal space or any of it. so depending on how it's written, both can work delightfully.
agreed that Sam thinking destiel is unrequited on one side can be the best of both words! I love it in post-15x18 fic where Sam is like "wait, he was in love with you TOO?" or sees Dean's reaction to Cas being in love with him and is like "wait, you didn't know?? WAIT--you love him back!?"
as far as my personal headcanon goes, and the way I'd generally write it unless a specific premise called for otherwise, I see Little Brother Sam being jealous Dean has such a close dude friend that isn't Sam, Eileen also being kinda clueless about it and accepting Sam's word that they're just Like That and it's not romantic/sexual, and then uncovering the big mystery.
there’s also a great middle ground where Sam is aware of *something*, but since Dean and Cas aren’t interested in figuring it out, it’s none of his business unless it causes problems for their work, which it mostly doesn’t (except when Cas is dead, and we see how Sam reacts to Dean’s reaction to that in s13!), and then when Sam sees Dean and Cas being romantic together, Sam goes “OH! that explains it” and is satisfied it’s finally been resolved.

Speechless
It isn’t very often I become speechless. On Friday, June 24th, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned a 49 year decision: Row vs. Wade. In 1973, the Court made it a constitutional right for women in the US to have access to abortions.
My Christians heart is conflicted at this decision to leave such a controversial topic to the States. At 10 am when it was overturned, 8 of our 50 states immediately made abortions illegal. Currently (at the time of the writing of this post) there are 18 states who are limiting women’s access to abortions, even 2 making it a criminal offense for the woman and the doctor who performs the abortion. It is believed that even more states are working at legislation to reduce women’s access to abortion. There are six states that are making abortion even more accessible during this time, including: New York, California, Oregon and Washington.
When I become speechless, I try to find someone else’s words that I agree with--I try not to say anything in the heat of the moment. If you are a friend of mine on Facebook, you’ll see many posts I have shared on this topic; many are very wise Christians pastors, and there are also a few really good memes out there.
As I think about the two groups of people who either hate or love the repeal, what does the Bible say at how we should be treating our fellow human beings?
First it says “to love.” There is no condition here. And yet, I have never in my life, seen more Conservative Christians have conditional love as they praise the repeal.
Below is a collection of Scripture passages ALL Christians need to remember in our post-Row vs. Wade world. All passages are from the New Living Translation (my default translation)
1 John 4:7-8, 16-21: 7: Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. 8: But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. 16: We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. 17: And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. 18: Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear or punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. 19: We love each other because he loved us first. 20: If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? 21: And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their fellow believers.
Luke 6:37: [Jesus said], “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.”
James 1:22: But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
James 1:26: If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.
James 2:8-9: 8: Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 9: But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.
James 2:14, 17: 14: What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? 17: So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
James 3:7-12: 7: People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, 8: but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. 9: Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10: And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! 11: Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? 12: Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.
James 3:17-18: 17: But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. 18: And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
James 4:5-10: 5: Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. 6: And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (Referencing Proverbs 3:34). 7: So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8: Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. 9: Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10: Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
James 4:11-12: 11: Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. 12: God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?
James 4:17: Remember, it is a sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.
(Bolded Scripture emphasis is mine)
So, what do we learn from these passages of Scripture?
Prioritizing the lives of the unborn over the lives of the women who carry them is a sin. Prioritizing the lives of the women who abort the unborn is a sin. To “love the sinner, but hate the sin” isn’t Biblical. We all sin. (Romans 3:23: For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.) Looking down on others for the same sins we commit, is a sin. To curse humanity and praise God, is a sin. I reap for the Christian Church and their praise of the repeal of Row vs. Wade. Because of this praise of the repeal, we have damaged the reputation of the Christian Church and its ministry. May God forgive us for our sins.
To judge another person, who was created out of God’s image (Genesis 1:26a), is a right only reserved for God. We must stop our judgments upon others and extend God’s unconditional love for all.
Let us do better as a Christian Church.
Peace and Blessings,
Cody Marie

hi!! may i request some reverse comfort headcanons for diluc, kaeya, childe, and xiao? maybe about relationship insecurity or something of that sort??
relationship flaws and insecurities.
no one is perfect— so what exactly are their flaws in a relationship? and what do they feel most conscious of in a relationship?
featuring diluc, kaeya, childe, xiao
Tumblr media
diluc
he feels that he might scare you off with his overprotectiveness. he’s already lost someone before, and he doesn’t think he can handle losing you either.
it’s not that he wants to control your life— in fact, he wants you to live it to its full extent. but there’s always that small worry, an annoying voice, in the back of his head that reminds him that the wilderness of teyvat is dangerous.
subconsciously, he may find himself interrogating you if you plan on leaving the house early in the morning, or late at night. there’ll be times where small quarrels stem from this, and inevitably it can get heated sometimes.
if you walk out on him for more hours than what feels comfortable, to cool off, he might start to think if you’ve left him for good.
diluc’s sitting at the edge of the bed, and there’s a consistent tapping on the floor as he anxiously drums his foot against it. it’s way past his assigned time to sleep, knowing he has to be up early to run his business. he doesn’t have half the mind to check what time it is, at least, not right now. all he can think about is that you’ve been gone for way too long.
he expects this from the two of you, especially after a heated argument. you two take the time away from one another to cool off and collect your thoughts, but this? this is just outrageous. if he were to give an estimate for how long you’d been gone— it would be two hours longer than you’d typically be gone for. and this just feeds into his worries from earlier, about your well-being.
the whole fight was about you and your safety after all. you would tell him that you’re fully capable of looking out for yourself; he’d say that he has enemies who may come after you; it goes back-and-forth. sensing that the argument was getting nowhere, you took it upon yourself to see yourself out first. “let’s just,” you pinch the bridge of your nose. “let’s just take time to cool off for a bit, shall we?”
“it’s been longer than a bit,” he mutters to himself.
he’s snapped out his thoughts as he hears the bedroom doors open slowly. you peek your head in, just to make eye contact with diluc. you two freeze, simply caught off-guard in the moment. he notes how your hair is a mess— it sticks out in certain areas, and obviously has not been brushed down— and you look a bit rugged. “hey,” you mutter sheepishly.
he wonders if he should ask you where you’ve been, but he holds his tongue. “are you okay?” diluc asks instead, and there’s a certain tenderness in his voice as he addresses you. “you look a bit... rough.”
you snort, throwing a feign hand of offense over your chest, at his words. “gee, thanks. nice to know i’m looking very appealing right now.” you joke. he stares at you, but you can see the faint smile on his lips at the way you’re joking around already. it’s good to know that you two are still okay. “but to answer your question, yes. i simply tripped over a pebble— it was so dark out and my foot got caught. who would’ve known that a pebble would be the one to take me down.”
he laughs at this, and you feel the tension from the argument completely lift.

kaeya
he’ll often wonder if you’re slowly becoming untrusting of him. he’s generally reserved, and quite mysterious— and it could easily be read in the wrong way.
kaeya knows that a relationship is all about communication and trust, well, for it to be healthy at least. and for the most part, he’s pretty open with you.
but there’s still certain aspects of his life that keeps in the dark from you. from his unknown past, to the business he does out of the knight of favonius— he likes that you look up to him as a respectable knight.
sometimes, you’ll ask him why he has duties to attend to at the dead of night, to which he reassuringly tells you that he’s simply off to bother diluc at the tavern. but he knows you’re catching on— diluc hasn’t seen him in the tavern for quite a bit.
“i know you haven’t been at the tavern.” you finally speak up, and you keep your eyes trained on the plate of food in front of you. you dig at the food, poking it around with your utensils— anything to keep your mind off of the fact that your heart is slightly racing right now. you don’t mean to be confrontational, but to be frank, you’re fed up that kaeya hasn’t been honest with you. “you can say that it came as a surprise to me when diluc said you hadn’t been there for a while now.”
“i guess it was only a matter of time before you’d ask diluc about me, and my whereabouts.” he sighs. he’s leaned into his chair by now, and he’s looking at you. your lips are locked into a tight line, a little peeved at the way he still talks so smoothly, and treats this so casually. as if he weren’t taking this seriously, and that this was just some other conversation to him. “i’m simply handling nightly duties.”
your grip becomes slightly tighter around your utensils, and he notices; your knuckles are turning slightly white, and your breathing is slightly out of pace. there’s a small change in his expression, and you can see the way his eyes narrow slightly.
“does it hurt to be honest to me about these things?” you ask him, genuinely hurt at the way it feels like he doesn’t trust you enough. “as your significant other, i guess i’d expected you to be more open to me. i’ve already told you countless times that no matter what, i’ll stick around— and even right now, i mean those words.”
once i tell, there’s no going back, is what he wishes to say. that it’ll be hard to look at someone the same way you’ve done before. “look,” he says as he sighs. kaeya wracks his mind for a way to respond— in a way where he wouldn’t be lying, but he wouldn’t subject you to danger either. “these matters, my nightly duties if you will, are matters between the abyss order and i. i’m afraid that if i tell you anything more about what goes on, you’ll become a target as well. too much knowledge can be harmful.”
“and you couldn’t just tell me that from the get-go?” it’s a fair point, and he throws you an apologetic look from across the table. “i understand, okay? just,” you swipe a hand through your hair. “no more secrets. i don’t think i’ll be as understanding if there’s a next time.”
“of course, my love.”

childe
he fears that one day, he’ll come home and you won’t be there anymore; his involvement with the fatui doesn’t make it any better.
the fatui is known for... it’s notorious deeds, to put it lightly. he had warned you beforehand, that dating a fatui harbinger will be exhausting. mentally, that is.
he’s bloodthirsty and thrill-seeking— it’s his nature. but he knows you don’t agree with the brutal ways the fatui handles their business, and he tries his best to take your mind off of it.
but it’s hard to ignore the words that circulate around liyue about certain things that he’s been up to. childe wonders that if you’ll get fed up one day, and just leave him.
there’s always a small amount of anxiety that bubbles up within childe whenever he approaches the doors of your shared bedroom. there’s that slightly irrational fear that he’ll walk in, and the room will be empty; you won’t be beneath the sheets in deep sleep, and your small breaths wouldn’t fill the room. his hand is hovering over the doorknob, and he almost laughs. a man like him, who stares death in its eyes, too afraid to open the door in fear that he’ll see something he doesn’t like.
childe gathers the courage to twist the knob, and the door creaks softly as he pushes it open. he pauses halfway, the fear taking over him for a second, but pushes through. he lets out an audible breath of relief— seeing you alive and well in front of him, and the comforts of just seeing that. his shoulders slack visibly at the confirmation, and he allows himself to enter the room.
he strips himself of clothes that he’s worn outside, changing into ones more fitting for bed. he’d jump straight into your arms if he could— but he knows that even in a sleepy state, you would still scold him.
he stalks towards the bed after doing the necessities. you stir at the way the bed dips beside you, feeling a pair of strong arms wrap around you. “childe?” you mutter. your voice is laced with sleepiness having just awoken, and you’re rubbing at your eyes as you turn to face him. it takes a second for your brain to start functioning, and you blurt out the first word that comes to mind. “hi.”
“hi to you too,” he mirrors, a small smile gracing his lips. your eyes are barely open as you glance at him, and your words are slightly slurred— but despite that, he truly thinks he’s the luckiest man in the world that he has someone as good as you. someone who sticks around, despite his affiliation. “i’ve missed you a lot, y’know.” he says.
“i missed you more,” you challenge, even in your sleep driven state.
he chuckles at you, before pressing a small kiss to your nose. “sure, sure. let’s fight about who misses each other more in the morning, okay?”

xiao
he’ll often doubt why you’re with him— and wonder if there’ll ever be a day where you run out of patience with him.
he’s getting better with affection, and he’s not finding it as weird as he had before. he doesn’t initiate things, still too embarrassed about the last time he failed to hug you. he wants things to be intimate, but there are still times where he flinches if you touch his hand or hug him, after forgetting to give him a heads up.
you always smile at him, and tell him that you care for his comfort the most. he can see the pain behind your smile though— almost a year of dating and he still hasn’t warmed up to you.
xiao still doesn’t fully understand the logic and need behind affection. but what he does know is that humans seek affection. they are social beings after all. knowing that, he worries that you’ll eventually want someone else who can give you the affection that you deserve.
“i’m sorry,” xiao apologizes in a panic. he was so thrown off-guard and so deep in his thought, that when you’d given him a back hug, he had reacted more violently than intended. thus, he had instinctively pushed you off his shoulder. it was hard to miss the flash of hurt in your eyes as you stumbled back, a little baffled, not expecting xiao to react in a such a way. “i... i apologize for that, y/n.”
it’s easy to notice the literal distance between you two and he reaches out for you, to which he stops himself midway. there’s just something that feels so wrong about touching you right now, especially after he’d just shoved you— it doesn’t feel right. even to now, he’s still scared of touching you. he finds himself getting frustrated at the way that he just can’t wrap his head around doing things in a romantic aspect. even he’s running out of patience with himself, so why do you still have so much?
you notice the way his hand stops, and you can see the countless of emotions within his eyes as he stares at his hands. there’s little glimpses of worry, of self-doubt, and you can tell right now that he’s being critical of himself. you don’t blame him for reacting that way, now that you look back on it in hindsight. anyone would’ve reacted like that as a form of self-defense.
“it’s alright, xiao, it really is.” you reassure him. “don’t be too harsh on yourself, okay? i said we’d take it as slow as we have to, and i plan on keeping my word for that. now... may i?” you gesture to his outstretched hand. he gives you a blank look at first, but nods slowly.
you take his hands in yours— you take your time to link your fingers, intertwining them and appreciating the way they mold together perfectly. you let him feel the way you draw soothing circles on the back of his hand. it’s such a simple action, but it flows with intimacy, and it has a weird feeling erupting in his stomach. (butterflies, he recalls you telling him.)
“see this?” you raise your linked hands. “if this is what you’re comfortable with at the moment, then i’m more than willing to hold hands for as long as you want.”
he wonders if you’ll grow impatient with him— but for now, he’s reassured you’ll stick around.

what if—and OK HEAR ME OUT OK—tanjiro got like, kidnapped by a demon. And it was like “oooooh you’re cute~” bc everyone loves tanjiro obvs. And the Hashira find out bc maybe Zenitsu and inosuke had SPRINTED back for help when they couldn’t FIND HIM (bc let’s be real. Zenitsu and inosuke are funky little boys w a lot of issues but the one thing they can’t resist is tanjiro’s huge heart) CONVENIENTLY during a biannual Hashira meeting 😛 and they’re all like “BABY HAS BEEN TAKEN BY A DEMON? 😡😡😡” and kagaya is like… ya ok go ahead yall lol. Love to see u guys showing enthusiasm. And so they all head out and find tanjiro, who is chained up and ~shirtless~ and ~bloody~ and the demon is ~holding his chin~ and ~much too close~ and the Hashira LOOOOOOOOOSE IT. demon is dead in seconds. All the Hashira are freaking out, tanjiro is trying to be calm and reassure them but he just went thru a traumatic experience, and he doesn’t know if nezuko is ok (she is; she’d been asleep in her box or smthn the whole time right where he left her—or maybe she had somehow alerted the Hashira?? Maybe Zenitsu and inosuke had taken her back to HQ?? Idk. But everyone is ok but tanjiro) and basically everyone is yelling and fussing over him and he hasn’t seen sunlight in DAYS and the demon has been draining him of blood to drink for funsies and toying with him and… he just starts SOBBING. and like the Hashira all FREEZE. and tanjiro is trying so hard to stop crying, like apologizing and stuttering and trying to tell them he’s ok, really, thank u for coming for him but he wasn’t worth all this—and 🥺 the Hashira just go SO SOFT. they seem to collectively understand that tanjiro can’t deal with their anger at the demon or frustration at his friends (who are obvs NOT AT FAULT but the Hashira are like That) right now, and that he needs to be handled gently bc Who Knows What Happened To Him and yeah. Tanjiro gets to be taken care of. And none of them fight (though they are jealous when the others get to be close; but they also see how happy the others make tanjiro, and THATS what’s important right now so they’ll shut up and cover tanjiro and Sanemi in a blanket as they cuddle, goddamn it, because even if it can’t be them tanjiro needs someone close right now). And tanjiro is ok eventually, bc he’s so tough and somehow keeps going after everything, but he’s embarrassed. And all the Hashira are just—apologetic (not their fault, but “I should’ve been there”) and worried (“he’s been through so much, how long until the light inside him extinguishes”) and just. So in love. Like very much “ill take care of you. I’ll do anything for you. I know you need to fight, but let me help. Let me love u. Let me carry some of this burden, bc though you don’t know it you’ve eased so much of the pain in my heart. You’ve made me care about living again, not just about saving people and killing demons—about living, bc I want to have a life with you, I want to treat you well, I want to see you happy. I’m sorry this happened to you. I love you. I love you. I love you.”
They take turns to cuddle him; they know Tanjirou is strong and has been through a lot, but they also know he needs them now.
They want to be there for him, they want to prove themselves they'll be good for him, to show Tanjirou that they'd do anything for him if he lets them; they can be great partners... Tanjirou just has to embrace it, he just needs to let them love him.
But they don't say anything, they don't say how much they love him because this is not the time; Tanjirou doesn't need to hear that right now.
He tries to be strong, but for a couple of days, he wakes up with a sob; he's not alone, he never is. Sometimes he has Rengoku kissing his tears away and Tomioka stroking his hair because the hashira have discovered he feels even better when there are two of them wrapped around him.
Kanroji tells Tanjirou about her rabbit while Iguro intertwines his fingers with the boy's.
Only Uzui and Himejima get to cuddle Tanjirou by themselves because they're too big for everyone else to get in the bed with them while they're with the boy.
Kocho takes care of Tanjirou's wounds and stops by his bed to kiss him on the forehead every now and then, but doesn't have the time to actually get in the bed with him.
Tokito makes fun of Shinazugawa every time they're with Tanjirou because he knows the wind hashira will do absolutely nothing against him as long as his arms are around the young demon slayer.
"You said you didn't like him," he chuckles. "But you're as bad as all of us."
Shinazugawa bares his teeth at him over Tanjirou's shoulder, while he runs his fingers through the boy hair softly so he doesn't wake him up; it's really interesting to see him act so gentle with someone.
"We killed the demon too quickly," he tells the mist hashira in a whisper. "We should've made him suffer first."
"Yeah," Tokito agrees as he sees Tanjirou flinch in his sleep when Shinazugawa mentions something about the demon. "You're right."
They're all in the butterfly mansion when Tanjirou gets out of the bed for the first time; he's better, he gets to be with his sister at night, assuring her he's fine, even though the Pillars are not so sure about it.
They pretend they're talking to each other, but the truth is that they're watching Tanjirou, ready to rush towards him if he needs them.
But then, Nezuko makes a gesture with her hands and Tanjirou chuckles, he smiles for the first time in days and the hashira finally stop pretending they're not looking at him to stare at him freely.
"He's laughing again," Kanroji sobs, trying to control her happy tears as Iguro hugs her.
Some of them smile as well (they can't help, Tanjirou's happiness is contagious), watching from afar, feeling warm again, like when the sun shines back in the sky after a storm.
