You know what I love about BBC Sherlock?
You only catch some things on your 2nd, or 5th or 10th rewatch.
Like with Mycroft and Sherlock.
You watch Mycroft be annoyed at Sherlock calling at Christmas, so you think he would rather be left alone and doesn't want to deal with anyone, including Sherlock.
But his initial expression is one of surprise. He doesn't want to believe that Sherlock could be calling for sentimental reasons because he cannot bear to be wrong.
He wants Sherlock to show him he cares, like he did back when they were children.
And notice his wording there. "Did they pass a new law?" Sherlock is not the one who cares about upholding the law, Mycroft is. He is setting the stage for Sherlock to banter, but Sherlock just tells him Irene Adler is dead and hangs up.
When Sherlock calls Mycroft (despite the fact he prefers to text) in TSO3 many speculate the reason he wants him at the wedding is to have someone for support.
Mycroft says they will spend more time together now that John is married. Just like old times. He knows Sherlock would hate that, yet Sherlock doesn't deny it. He could say he can spend extra time with Mrs Hudson, or Lestrade or Molly or Wiggins.
He could say he doesn't need him at all. But we know that's not quite true.
If Sherlock was being sincere here and said he needs someone on his side, by his side, someone to be there for him, so he feels less alone... Mycroft would most likely think he was being mocked. He wouldn't believe him. Why should he?
When Mycroft tells Sherlock his loss would break his heart, he isn't doing it because of the drugs.
The drugs are just an excuse to hide behind. A smokescreen. He can't even look at Sherlock while is he saying it because he knows what's coming. Mockery.
"What the hell am I supposed to say to that?"
Mycroft broke script. He said the quiet part, the subtextual part out loud. I do care about you and it would break my heart if you died.
Sherlock doesn't know what to say. You can even read his bewildered statement as a genuine question. Mycroft does, in a way. So he answers.
"Merry Christmas?"
"You hate Christmas."
"Perhaps there was something in the punch."
I know you are up to something.
On the tarmac, Sherlock didn't even want to say goodbye to his brother. But when Mycroft calls him in 4 minutes, Sherlock has no idea Moriarty might be back. He just thinks Mycroft couldn't go even five minutes without speaking to him again and checking up on him.
Sherlock didn't say goodbye to Mycroft because he knew that wouldn't be the last time he'd hear from him.
"I will always be there for you."
"Shouldn't you be out there getting me a pardon, like a proper big brother?"
"He was a rubbish big brother." Was, not is.
"You were great."
He didn't find Lady Bracknell convincing. He isn't talking about that.
"Dr Watson? Look after him, would you?"
"Mycroft. Make sure he's looked after. He's not as strong as he thinks he is."
Neither of them are.

The Lying Detective, self hatred and acceptance of abuse
There's something I need to let out of my chest about Sherlock and this episode in particular, cause it's the one that really opened my eyes about something very important regarding Sherlock: he hates himself. He really does, and because he hates himself he believes he deserves all the abuse he gets from the persons he loves.
At some point he says he believed he thought he was an idiot, because Mycroft kept repeating he was the smartest one when they were younger. That was until he met "ordinary people" and realized he was actually, you know, very smart compared to others. And yet, he kept believing that Mycroft was way above him in terms of intelligence. He accepted it, and because he accepted it he trusted him to know what was better for him. And Mycroft, in return, felt entitled to let him believe that Redbeard was a dog and not his childhood friend, and to hide him that he had a sister, who was also a murderer, who had let said friend rot in a well. He felt he had to do it because he didn't trust Sherlock to handle the truth. He thought he was what? too stupid to understand? Too sensitive?
Now don't get me wrong, I love Mycroft as a character, and I know that he did all that "for Sherlock's good", but at the end of the day, lying, manipulate a child's memory and repeating him all the time that he's stupid was textbook abuse. And Sherlock wouldn't have accepted to be called stupid, and would have probably seen that Mycroft wasn't THAT intelligent if he wasn't so deep in self-loathing. But then how was he supposed to love himself if he was always treated like the "slow one" of the family by his own big brother?
When Molly slapped him not once, but THREE TIMES, because he was high, again he didn't flinch, didn't protest. It's not an attack against Molly, I understand why she was upset at the sight of the man she loved destroying himself, but my point is: he could have considered that it wasn't her business, he could have told her to stop. But again, if someone he respects like Molly believes he deserves to be slapped, then he does.
Now John. Sorry guys, that's the hard part I have to say out loud. John was an excellent friend up until a certain time, no argument. One could even argue, and be right, that Sherlock was the abusive one for a while: he treated him like an idiot -but then Sherlock thinks everyone's an idiot except for Mycroft, ruined his first date, unintentionnally (or not) ruined several of his relationships by being obnoxious around his girlfriends, played dead for two years instead of confiding in him like any good friend would do, made him believe they would both die only to hear him say good things about him, I mean... Sherlock's definitely not an angel and for quite a long time, he was rather a shitty friend too. I guess growing up without friends, not even your own sibling will do that to you, but it's an explanation, not an excuse for being an asshole to everyone.
And yet John accepted him as he was, and always forgave him, so of course Sherlock came to idealize him like he idealized Mycroft, for different reasons of course. For the record, I love Sherlock and John's relationship/friendship/bromance/romance/whatever it is. Up until TLD at least I found it... precious. Yes Sherlock was an ass, more than once, but he acknowledged it, and showed he wanted to be better: he not only apologized, but he also grew to become a better person, someone who would be worth of John's affection.
What happened in The Lying Detective, though... what the hell happened? So John was sad because he lost Mary. Understandable. Even if popular theories like to claim he never loved her, his despair and the fact that he keeps her ghost with him all the time said it loud and clear: John loved Mary, very much indeed. And he was mad at Sherlock who he considered responsible for Mary's death. It was also understandable, if Sherlock hadn't shut his big mouth, yada yada... Ah I love to see a a female character fridged so two male characters can suffer and grow thanks to her sacrifice . But then what we know... happened, Sherlock was high as a kite, to the point he was very close to losing it completely he lost it completely, he took a scalpel and John, well, stopped him. But then John lashed on him. He BEAT HIM UP LIKE A PULP, which was at this point completely unjustifiable because Sherlock was no longer a threat, and he would have maybe killed him in his effort if two male nurses hadn't stopped him. But this post isn't about John and his disturbing lust for violence, not really. It's about Sherlock.
What Sherlock did? Nothing. Not one time did he try to defend himself. He took all the hits, didn't ask John to stop, just once again... Accepted. He accepted that he deserved John's violence, even said John was entitled to do that because he had "killed his wife". And Joh doubled down, "yes you killed my wife". But HE knew it wasn't true. Sherlock didn't, though. He was sick because he felt as if he had killed Mary herself, and that's why he was so adamant to grant her her last wish. As someone who hated myself for a long time, I totally recognized the impulse to take the blame for everything bad that happens. That's what Sherlock does, all the damn time.
Violence between men is often glossed over because the old say "boys will be boys". After all it wasn't the first time that John beat Sherlock up, he had done it after Sherlock came back from the dead but it was just for laughs and giggles then, "haha so funny John assaulted him three times, look his noise's bleeding, lol", and also the audience thought that Sherlock deserved it after all, so... it was fine, sort of. Notice that there too, Sherlock didn't try to fight back and didn't ask John to stop. Like, I still don't undrstand why John punched him the last time: because he told him he missed the thrill of the chase? What was wrong in saying that? Except that it was probably true? I'm personally never comfortable with the normalization of violence between men on TV especially when only one is actually fighting the other, but that's just me I guess.
In TLD it was very different. It wasn't funny, and it was certainly not ok. And I was very upset when at the end, not only John didn't apologize to his best friend for physically abusing him, but Sherlock was the one comforting him at the end. The man had almost been murdered by a serial killer, before that his second role model beat him like a pulp for a crime he didn't commit, and he was still the one being strong for John.
I have a big problem with the way this matter was handled, because John's violence was just.... forgotten. And if it had been the only time that he had expressed his anger against Sherlock with his fists, I'd agree it was just a bad moment in their relationship even though he'd still need to apologize for making it ok. But here there's nothing that tells Sherlock that John won't do it again; nothing that guarantees that the next time Sherlock will upset him, John won't lash out on him again, and it will be acceptable because for some reason, violence against a man is somehow ok.
The idea is, I suppose, that there's no power imbalance like there is between a man a woman. If Sherlock wanted to fight John he probably could easily win, he's strong and has enough fighting skills for that. That's not the problem. There IS a power imbalance in that Sherlock will always believe that John is entitled to be mad at him, thus to beat him up if he wants. And since John apparently never apologized for assaulting Sherlock, I have no idea if he realized how wrong it was, and if he intends to change. I don't know about you, but personally I thought texting a woman in secret from his wife wasn't a big deal compared to what he did to Sherlock, and yet that was the only thing that, apparently, John felt guilty of.
Sherlock really broke my heart when he told John that by saving his life, Mary had given it a value. Which meant, basically that before Mary's sacrifice, his life had no value whatsoever, at least in his eyes. Let that sink in for a minute.
"The Lying Detective" is a very fitting name for this episode and for Sherlock in general, because Sherlock doesn't just lie about being almost killed by Culverton Smith, he constantly lies to himself.
He did it when he claimed he fell back into his drug habits "for a case" -if he wanted to attract the press/Magnussen's attention on him there was a lot of things he could have done, he did it all his life about being devoid of feelings and emotions, did it about the reason why he literally offered his life to Culverton; yeah he wanted to "save John Watson" and honor Mary, but it was also about ending his own suffering, a result he hoped to get at best by catching Culverton Smith, at worst by dying.
No wonder why when Eurus challenged him to choose between John and Mycroft, he chose to kill himself. That's actually strange that she didn't see it coming. Probably she didn't know him as much as she thought. He made that choice because he thought he was the one deserving to die. Not Mycroft, not John, not even Eurus... Of course it was also a calculated risk, as he had understood at this point that he was the only one Eurus wanted to keep alive because everything she did was about him for some reason. But I truly believe he would have rather pulled the trigger and shot himself rather than killing Mycroft or John. I saw once someone claim that Mycroft knew Sherlock would choose to save John anyway and that's why he wanted to make things easier, but I think nothing's further for the truth. Sherlock would have never chosen. It would have always been him.

Five Fics Friday: January 5/24
Happy first Five Fics Friday of 2024!! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are ready to start off the year right with some fantastic fics on my radar!
Enjoy!!
SIGNAL BOOSTING
Here With Me by bodyandsoul (T, 5,260 w., 1 Ch. || Post-S4, Domestic Fluff, Light Angst, Love Confessions, Big Brother Mycroft, Parentlock, Families, Happy Ending) – Sherlock wants John to move back to Baker Street. It's clearly the best choice for everyone: he wants John and Rosie living at 221B more than anything, and John's struggle to balance working with raising Rosie by himself has him looking more tired by the day, so when John agrees to return it's almost everything that Sherlock's ever allowed himself to hope for. Sherlock also knows that the secrets he's kept in the past to try and protect John - his faked death, Mary's assassination attempt - nearly ended their friendship, which leaves him with a dilemma. He could say nothing about his feelings and revel in John and Rosie's return to Baker Street, or finally set the record straight (or not, as it were) with John which could mark the end of their friendship. But there's really only one right answer and Sherlock knows that he owes John the truth. He just hopes there will be something left standing of their friendship when it's all said and done...
RECENTLY BOOKMARKED
The Skin Over My Heart by standbygo (E, 8,849 w., 1 Ch. || Post-Hiatus, Fake Relationship, Case Fic, Dog Tags, Military, Homophobia, Gay Bashing, POV First Person Sherlock, Friends to Lovers, First Kiss / Time, Declarations of Love, Undercover, Haircuts, Flashbacks, Touching, Pining Sherlock, Hospitalization, Metaphors, Introspection, Hand Jobs, On the Couch, John’s Past, Angst with Happy Ending) – Sherlock and John are still trying to adjust to Sherlock's return from his hiatus when John's friend Bill Murray brings them a case. Someone is targeting the LGBTQA+ members of Bill's unit. John and Sherlock go undercover at the unit, but when they end up having to flirt to flush out the suspect, Sherlock realizes he's in over his head.
Both Sides Now by Silvergirl (M, 14,724 w., 5 Ch. || Post-TEH / Reunion Fix-It, Bed Sharing, First Kiss / Time, Undercover John, Couple for a Case, Assassin Mary, Big Brother Mycroft, Norfolk Coast, Angry John, First Kiss, Worried Sherlock, Pining Sherlock, Hand Holding, Bed Sharing, Alternating POV, Infidelity, Meddling Mycroft, Emotional Love Making, Matchmaker Mycroft) – Sherlock, undercover on the Norfolk coast, texts that he needs help; John is still seething after Sherlock’s gambit in the train car, and he refuses. When Sherlock goes missing, Mycroft sends John in to pose as Sherlock’s bit on the side.
RECENTLY MARKED FOR LATER
Magpies: Five for Silver by 7PercentSolution (T, 1,726+ w., 1/6 Ch. || WiP || HLV Fix-It, Case Fic, Magpies) – The bullet isn’t silver, but it changes everything. Mycroft, John, Mary, and Sherlock grapple with the aftermath of pain, betrayal and loss. The fifth instalment of the Magpies story.
Next Year's Words by thegildedbee (G, 9,959+ w., 5/6 Ch. || WiP || New Year's Eve, Fluff, Romance, Shenanigans, Marriage Proposal) – Sherlock and John each set out to surprise the other on December 31st, inspired to give new meaning to the phrase "ringing in the new year." But what each had imagined would be a relatively straightforward event undergoes an unexpected reversal when their backs are turned – and each ends up with a double surprise.

Family
Thanks again for doing this @calaisreno and thanks for the tag @keirgreeneyes
What truly matters
In many ways they’re so much alike, in other’s not remotely so. The fact that they’re both the younger brother, is a thing John sometimes finds hard to relate to. In Sherlock’s case, it’s clear as day. Mycroft being seven years his senior, which more often than not seems to be decades, and the way he talks to Sherlock, says it all.
In their early childhood, Harry was his big sister, and a good one too. That changed when she became a teenager and slowly, but ultimately was determined to ruin her life, drinking herself to oblivion every occasion she got. She stopped being John’s big sister the day John had to manhandle her home from a pub down the street from their home. He was 16, she 19.
When John met Sherlock, John’s parents were long gone, and all the family he had left was Harry. Soon enough, John got acquainted with Sherlock’s arch enemy, aka his brother, who was a bit taken aback with John’s already unwavering loyalty to the little brother of the British Government.
John wasn’t aware that the elderly couple visiting actually were Sherlock’s parents before he threw them out. Sherlock was embarrassed of their normality, which puzzled and upset John.
Long overdue, the two men in 221B got their heads out of wherever, and became the item everyone assumed they’d been from the very start.
Apart from Mycroft perhaps.
John started a quest, more earnestly now that he shared Sherlock’s bed. He got even more determined when, to everyone’s astonishment, Greg moved in with Mycroft.
Apart from Sherlock perhaps.
***
It’s a lazy Sunday morning. John’ got his arms full of a pliant Sherlock, who purrs satisfied while John pets his hair.
“Sherlock, I’ve been thinking about something,” John begins carefully.
“Have you now? Pray tell, John,” Sherlock murmurs into his neck..
“Well, now that you and I, and Myc…”
“Bite you tongue, John! No mentioning of my brother when I’m naked in bed with you,” Sherlock growls.
“Shush, now. Just hear me out, love,” John begs and pulls Sherlock in tighter, stroking his back and kissing his temple.
Sherlock sighs dramatically, but nuzzles closer, which John takes as permission to continue.
“As I was saying. We being a couple alongside Greg and Mycroft, I think we should go visit your parents. Lay still, I’m not finished. I’ve only got Harry, and, well you know what she’s like, and I would really like to get to know your parents. You shouldn’t be ashamed of them, because they’re ordinary. Do you know that you say that word as if it’s a malfunction?”
Sherlock rolls on to his back but takes John’s hand in his and kisses his palm.
“You’re too good for me, John,” Sherlock sighs. “I guess you’re right. They’re not getting any younger, and they have pestered both me and Mycroft about bringing our significant others to dinner,” Sherlock reveals.
John props himself up on an elbow and beams down at Sherlock.
“Well, that’s settled then,” John says firmly while stroking fingers over Sherlock’s chest.
Sherlock rolls his eyes and huffs.
“The things I do for you, John Watson,” he mutters.
“Yeah, I’m awfully demanding, aren’t I?” John answers in a husky voice.
Sherlock’s eyes go dark. He reaches for John and pulls him down for a passionate kiss. Tongues explore known territory and needy whimpers escape them both.
“John,” Sherlock breathes, cupping John’s arse, squeezing, which makes John moan.
“Christ, Sherlock. I need you,” John whispers, and Sherlock acts, claiming and marking John’s body with his own.
***
The visit to the elderly Holmes’s was a success. Mrs. Holmes proved to be an excellent cook, and Mr. Holmes the perfect host. Some bickering between the brothers was inevitable, but it was good-natured without the usual sting. The interesting conversation touched a variety of topics, including some childhood memories regarding Mycroft and Sherlock, which Greg and John appreciated tremendously, the brothers not so much. All in all it was a perfect day spent with people who obviously loved each other. John had instantly felt affection toward Sherlock’s parents. They were  interesting, without the sharp minds of their sons, but it was evident that they loved their offspring dearly.
Greg and Mycroft headed back to London in the evening, while John asked Sherlock if they could stay the night. He felt so at ease in Sherlock’s childhood home. A similar feeling to the one he had the day he entered 221B, in fact. Mrs. Holmes had been over the moon when they asked if they could stay over.
“It reminds me of my Nan’s home,” John mused lying beside Sherlock in his old bedroom.
“And I guess that’s a good memory,” Sherlock prompts.
“God, yes. I used to spend each summer there before she passed. She would bake and cook, just like your mother. The weather was always sunny. Shush, you git. I know it wasn’t, but childhood memories are like that. All my summers at Nan’s were sunny, so shut it.”
John rolls over, kisses Sherlock’s jaw and rests his head on Sherlock’s chest. Sherlock combs his fingers through John’s hair and muses at bit himself.
“It’s been a rather nice day, actually. Mummy clearly adores you and Greg. Father too, I think. It was more relaxing than I thought it would be, and that’s clearly because of you two. When it’s just the four of us, well, you know what Mycroft’s like.”
“I do, but you’re not any better, love,” John chuckles and feels rather than sees the glare Sherlock’s shooting him.
“Anyway. I’m glad you persuaded me, John. Seeing Mummy and Father like this…I can’t seem to remember the last time,” Sherlock finishes.
John pulls Sherlock close, his eyes a bit prickly now.
“Well, what truly matters, sweetheart, is that we can make up for that now. For the rest of their lives, you’ll remember the last time you saw them this happy, yeah?”
“Yes, John. I’d like that. Very much,” Sherlock says and kisses John reverently. “Love you.”
“Love you too, Sherlock,” John murmurs and turns out the light.
Bringing the Holmes family closer was my mission today, and I think it worked out fine.

Favourite Moriarty the Patriot Relationships! (Platonic and Romantic)
Spoliers Below the cut !!
Tumblr media
Mycroft & Sherlock
I do not think there is another Big brother and Little brother relationship I love more then these two. (I mean sure Fuegoleon and Leopold put I mean…) I am dying to know about their past and how they grew up if they were together or separate. When Mycroft first walked through that door and started talking to John I knew he was somewhat related to Sherlock. (I mean, could you not tell?-). Mycroft is that one older sibling who would bring trouble to themselves just to help Sherlock in some way. Sherlock being an idiot doesn't realise it though. Also their nicknames for each other are so cute, Sherly and Mycky.
Tumblr media
William x Sherlock
Now. Where do I begin. They are canon and there is nothing you can do to convince me they are not. Sherlock went through all of that trouble just to save Liam. He even jumped off just for him. THEY WERE LITERAL HUGGING WHILE FALLING. I mean if you ask me that is pretty romantic. In the manga Billy literally confirmed it for us when william said 'I want us to live together, share our worries together.' DNHWIQEOHFNLDA Then billy just ruins the moment by saying 'Are you done with your wedding vows?'. Now I am going to shut up.
Tumblr media
All of these guys
They are a literal family! Who needs annoying ass noble parents. (Louis is supposed to be there but um- this gif was too pretty not to use) You can tell how upset everyone was finding out William was going to die. Even Louis went against him! Moran didn't want to accept it, he wanted to die with William but he didn't let so he just had to go along with it. Fred and Louis visited Sherlock so he can save him. Albert pinned all the blame on himself. Bond- ummm Well uh yeah-
Tumblr media
John & Sherlock
These two are just so funny. John cares about Sherlock, Sherlock cares about John although he is horrible at showing it. The scene after they had saved John from being accused of murder. Sherlock really tried hard to apologise but John knows he is horrible at it. Also when Sherlock got 'arrested' you could see how angry and upset John was since he did it for John and Mary to get married. And their reunion!! John kinda looks like an idiot did crack up but um. still love those two. 'Just as I have a need for you, you have a need for me' says Sherlock
Tumblr media
Mycroft X Albert
I honestly don't know how I grew a liking to these two but I guess I just did. They would make a funny duo. Protective older brothers for the win! I do hope to see them interact some more! But out of all honesty Albert is kinda dry but I still love him, they are both very calm and will have a nice healthy relationship (who am I lying to-) They are a chaotic duo in their own way. Mycroft used to really trust Albert before he found out he was the Lord of Crime.

Top 10 Portrayals of Mycroft Holmes
In my last couple lists for the supporting cast of Sherlock Holmes, I discussed two of his closest allies: Mrs. Hudson and Inspector Lestrade. It’s now time for another of his allies, though perhaps the most begrudging of them all: his elder brother, Mycroft Holmes. Mycroft is an intriguing character, because there are essentially two completely different ways to portray him. In the original books, Mycroft is declared to be even smarter than Sherlock is, which is already quite interesting. What makes him even more fascinating, however, is the reveal of his career: Mycroft “IS the British Government.” He’s the head of political and military intelligence, his power seemingly second only to the Prime Minister and the Royal Family themselves. With so much power and brilliance, one would expect Mycroft to be a rather imposing figure…but in Conan Doyle’s stories, the character is actually depicted a sort of comical figure. Mycroft is a sort of stereotypical, pompous bureaucrat in the books; like Sherlock, he’s a trifle eccentric, as well as rather pompous and slightly foppish in demeanor. The humor comes from his blustering attitude and exaggerated rotundity, which are completely at odds with the potential for something more dangerous when you realize what and who he really is. As a result of this dichotomy, different reimaginings and adaptations of Mycroft tend to gravitate more towards one side or the other: some versions play the character very much in the Conan Doyle vein, as a comically uppercrust caricature. Others, however, have focused much more on his political prowess, making him a much more serious character, with the humor stemming now from his dandy manners and the relationship he has with his brother. In the books, Sherlock and Mycroft have a SLIGHT sibling rivalry, but they actually seem to get along fairly well; most reinterpretations, however, really play up that rivalry and have the two constantly at each other’s throats…but when push comes to shove, that brotherly love still shines through. With so many different ways to handle Mycroft, choosing my favorites was rather difficult: this duality to the character and the way he’s been portrayed means that he is both easy to mess up and yet hard to mess up at the same time, if you can imagine such a paradox. I think, however, that the choices I’ve made are more or less finite, though a few may rise or fall on the scale depending on my mood, more than anything else. With that said, here are My Top 10 Portrayals of Mycroft Holmes!
Tumblr media
10. Rhys Ifans, from Elementary.
It took me a while to warm up to this version of Mycroft, but ultimately I did come to like him. In here, instead of being the head of British intelligence, Mycroft is simply an AGENT of said intelligence: he’s essentially this universe’s version of James Bond, a suave and classy spy for MI6, who works under the facade of a restauranteur. While I do have a few issues with this take on the character, overall I think it’s an interesting one; a big part of what makes him good comes from Ifans’ acting.
Tumblr media
9. Robert Morley, from A Study in Terror.
This Mycroft COULD have been in my Top 5, at the very least, if he had a larger role. Morley is probably the most book-accurate take on Mycroft ever, but he’s only in the film for a couple of short minutes, and…well…frankly, he has absolutely NO purpose to be in the story at all. I feel like someone just included him BECAUSE they wanted to see Robert Morley play this character, and…fair play to them, I suppose, I’m glad it happened. I just wish he had more of a reason to be there, and more screentime in his pocket.
Tumblr media
8. Peter Jeffrey, from Hands of a Murderer.
In this period remake of “The Woman in Green” (one of the Basil Rathbone films), Jeffrey’s Mycroft ends up being kidnapped by Professor Moriarty, who is seeking information he wishes to sell to enemy agents. (Which actually sounds similar to a completely different Rathbone movie, “Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon,” but I digress.) While his role is relatively peripheral, I enjoy Jeffrey’s work with the character, and they really play around wonderfully with the relationship between the two brothers.
Tumblr media
7. Richard E. Grant, from Sherlock: Case of Evil.
While Mycroft’s role in this film is small, his presence is important: it’s revealed that part of the reason he is such a reclusive figure is because he was captured and tortured by Moriarty (after the previous pick, I’m sensing a pattern) during Sherlock’s first encounter with his arch-nemesis. Mycroft’s brain is as sharp as ever, but his body still bears scars. This is one of the most supportive takes on the character out there, and Grant plays him very well.
Tumblr media
6. Boris Klyuyev, from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson.
Arguably one of the funniest versions of Mycroft, in my opinion. This Russian-made TV film series used Mycroft fairly often, and he was always fun to see in action, really leaning into the comedy of the character from the original stories, and even doing a few new things with him, such as having him help Mrs. Hudson during “The Tiger Hunt” (their adaptation of “The Empty House”). Very, very amusing to watch.
Tumblr media
5. The Version from Moriarty the Patriot.
This version takes some obvious cues from the rendition from “Sherlock,” portraying Mycroft as a more traditionally handsome, limber fellow, and really emphasizing his power as “the very embodiment of the British government.” However, he’s a much “warmer” character than the BBC version, which I think helps make him stand out, and gives him a little more of the humor that was present in the original stories. In Japan, he's voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto; the English dub is played by "Black Butler" star himself, J. Michael Tatum.
Tumblr media
4. Stephen Fry, from the Guy Ritchie Films.
Mycroft appears in the second film, “Game of Shadows,” in another case of a “small but important” sort of role. Some of the funniest scenes in the film are thanks to him, and he’s also important in terms of the movie’s climax and conclusion. Fry is a shockingly book-accurate take on the character for the modern era, both in appearance and portrayal, and I think that’s a big part of why I like him. For all the things these films did differently from Conan Doyle, Mycroft almost feels ripped straight out of the pages.
Tumblr media
3. Christopher Lee, from The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.
Lee was the first “serious” Mycroft, depicting the character as a more athletic and icy sort of character. This is ironic, since “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes” is mostly rather comedic in nature, although it does have its hard edges. With that said, while he is a bit more dramatic than earlier interpretations, he still has a lot of humorous bits and moments. Plus, it’s Christopher Lee: of COURSE he’s awesome.
Tumblr media
2. Mark Gatiss, from Sherlock.
Gatiss not only plays Mycroft in the series, but is also one of its chief creators. As if the guy needed MORE power. This version rather famously plays up Mycroft as a very, VERY authoritarian figure: much colder and more mean-spirited than almost any other interpretation. At times, he’s more of an antagonist than a protagonist in the show. However, he does still have a heart hidden under his dictatorial ways, a fact that’s made clear literally from the start of the series, and does help Sherlock out in various ways throughout the show. I was sorely tempted to make him number one…hopefully the person I chose instead won’t disappoint.
Tumblr media
1. Charles Gray, from the Granada Series.
Gray first played the character in the film “The Seven Per-Cent Solution,” but it’s the Granada series (with Jeremy Brett as his younger brother) that I REALLY recognize him for. Alongside Robert Morley (and possibly Stephen Fry), I would argue that this is the most book-accurate take on Mycroft there’s ever been. I love how even though he is depicted as the generally more lighthearted figure from the original stories, he’s not played up as a caricature or a cartoon, and can be serious when the moment calls for it. The show even had two episodes where Mycroft took the place of each of the Baker Street gang, with one episode teaming him up with his brother, and another teaming him up with Watson. Gatiss may be more recognizable nowadays, but for me, Gray IS Mycroft, just as Brett IS Sherlock and Colin Jeavons IS Lestrade, plain and simple.

Thinking about an overworked detective who just caught a big break in the case having to stand out in the rain at night overseeing a crime scene investigation (or something) when he’s already got a bad cold 🤤🤤
——
I’m here to request this!! 🤭
Ask and you shall receive!! Getting back to my roots with some classic M/ystrade goodness.
Summary - D.I. Lestrade has caught the worst cold in a long time but he’s stuck working a new lead in the case thanks to Sherlock. Mycroft stops by and fusses. As per usual. 🥰
Dedicated to @snzagaba for encouraging me to write it and also to my lovely Anon for requesting 💕
Tumblr media
The winter rain hammered the pavement all over London, icy winter chill freezing people to the bones. Most people were inside their warm homes at this time of night, but Detective Inspector Lestrade was out near a construction site.
Sherlock had informed him earlier that they needed to go to the site immediately and search for the discarded backpack that would lock up the suspects for good - nasty fellas involved in a brutal child murder.
Greg wasn’t sure how Sherlock always managed to do it, but he hadn’t been wrong yet. This time he was on about the way the suspect wore his belt. Had to give away that he worked construction in the side.
The consulting detective and his partner were standing under two umbrellas, Sherlock barking orders at the dog team. Greg was without umbrella, soaked to his shoes.
“HURRRDSH!!”
He snapped forward, water droplets flying off the soggy whisps of hair.
Sherlock shot him a glare that said ‘you’re interrupting my thinking’.
“Bless you.” John offered before turning back to face the scene with sherlock.
With Mycroft away on business this week, no one was around to tell him to get some rest. The DI had been working late nights at Scotland Yard every day this week, running himself ragged. By Wednesday he’d already started coming down with one hell of a cold. Donovan and Anderson avoiding him by Thursday.
The silver haired man used a wet hand to try and wipe the rain out of his eyes - an effort that was futile. He pulled an already damp tissue from his pocket and coughed harshly into it.
The cough sounded worse than it was - two decades of smoking seemed to have that effect on Greg whenever he fell ill.
“You’ll catch your death out here, Gregory.”
The man in question turned around and was met with none other than the British government himself holding an umbrella over them both.
“ii’GSHHH! Heh’RRRDSHUH!”
Mycroft huffed a sigh, always startled by how loud his partner could be.
“I thi’gk I already have…” Greg mumbled from behind the tissue. He blew his nose, practically turning it to confetti.
“For heavens sake Gregory, do throw that useless napkin away.” The younger man removed a clean and pressed handkerchief from his suit’s breast pocket and handed it to the detective who was already putting it to good use.
“H’eTCHiew!”
“Bless.” Mycroft pursed his lips as he strode over to Sherlock and John.
“Ah, brother. You’ve gained weight.” Sherlock quipped.
Mycroft rolled his eyes, “Could you perhaps hurry this up, brother dear. Detective Inspector Lestrade is unwell.”
“What Grant?”
“You know his name, Sherlock.”
The younger of the Holmes’ brothers shouted at the crime scene investigators who were digging in ponchos.
“Not there you idiots. Your other left!! For Christ’s sake Anderson, didn’t anyone teach you directions?? THERE!”
Right where sherlock pointed, someone hit something solid. After a couple people joined in the digging, it was unearthed as a backpack. THE backpack needed to crack the case.
“Detective, I think you’ll find the backpack was exactly where I’d thought. Inside you’ll found damning evidence that the banker did it all along for the insurance claim. We’ll be on our way now.”
Sherlock turned on his heels, John apologizing but following after him.
“Is that enough to get you home and into some dry clothes then?” Mycroft asked. “Anthea has the car ready to go.”
“Erm… let me make sure Donovan can handle this before I just snfff leave them…”
Mycroft made a note of his partner’s growing congestion. He’d prepare the humidifier later that night.
A few moments later, Greg was trotting back over through the rain.
“Alright, she’s got it. Don’t suppose the British government can summon me a towel?” He teased.
The window of the car rolled down and Anthea handed one over. It was warm as if it had just come out of the dryer.
“How did you-? Nevermind…”
“Don’t mumble, Gregory.” Mycroft ushered him into the back of the car. “Let’s tend to that cold of yours, shall we?”

Something that’s been niggling at me for a while is Sherlock saying William is the first person, the only person, to understand him. William feels the same way, but there’s something that makes this a bit weirder from Sherlock.
Mycroft.
Of course, William also has brothers, but Mycroft and his relationship with Sherlock is a bit of a different creature. It’s not surprising William wouldn’t feel the like the brothers he adores but who kind of worship him and never understand the way his brain works would feel misunderstood by them.
But Mycroft is just as smart as Sherlock. In fact, he’s smarter. And he has been around for Sherlock’s literal entire life (except the three years abroad, but Sherlock was saying this before that was a factor). He sees Sherlock in ways Sherlock probably can’t even quite comprehend. They grew up in a similar environment (the seven-year age gap makes that a bit tricky—when age gaps are that big between siblings, how they were raised is inevitably a bit different). Mycroft grew up speaking Cockney same as Sherlock, he grew up with their parents and he grew up with the same brilliance and devotion to his family that Sherlock also exhibits in his own ways. Mycroft likes to tease his little brother just as William teases Sherlock, and he likes to compete with Sherlock (oh, sore winners).
For me, though, “Mycroft is so much smarter than Sherlock,” doesn’t really cover, “He doesn’t understand me.” Yes, it does make Mycroft not exactly his equal, but I don’t think William is Sherlock’s other half just because William lesser than Mycroft in that way.
I think it’s because William is the same sort of person as Sherlock, and Mycroft is not. Because William is the same sort of person as Sherlock, his existence validated that the choices Sherlock made to be that sort of person, because William also chose to be that sort of person.
Sherlock remained adamant that he should be allowed to be himself and that everyone should be allowed to be themselves. Mycroft did not view that as important in service of duty, and willingly changed who he was and discarded parts of his own background for his goals. He allowed himself to be pressed into service atoning for something that he never even did.
While William may have made some of the same choices Mycroft did, I don’t think William views those things as good. William covers up birth name from every record he can find, but he keeps his, and Louis’s, birth certificates on him—because that birth certificate is an acknowledgment of who he was and where he came from, which has value to him even if he cannot allow himself to indulge in it. William will openly admit where he was born and raised for his first years of his life to people he can trust with that information because that information, the East End of London, and the nuns who helped raise him matter to him. Just like Sherlock stubbornly kept his Cockney accent through Oxbridge schooling, William stubbornly kept his birth certificate through assuming a false name and decades of deception.
As ever, William couldn’t be as open, but it was a different choice conceived out of valuing the same thing. Sherlock devoted himself to science and reason, to impartial justice regardless of who a person is. William made different choices with different methods to also support science and reason and impartial justice regardless of who a person is. They both see the same flaws in the same justice system and both abhor abuses of power with the same viscerality. There are two detectives and two criminals. They have both devoted themselves to fixing that justice system with their knowledge and with their lives.
Mycroft…didn’t.
He has completely different priorities from Sherlock. Mycroft grew up in a similar environment as Sherlock, with a similar staggering intelligence, a similar affection for their clearly-loving family, and he didn’t make anything resembling the choices Sherlock. They came from the same place and yet they were so different as people that ended up on completely different paths to different places. William came from a different place than Sherlock and made different choices on a different path because he and Sherlock were always aiming for the same place.
And I think that’s what Sherlock was missing from Mycroft. Mycroft might see and know him, but he could never validate Sherlock’s choices and humanity and self the way William, who values the same things Sherlock does, can.
Sherlock understood William in an instant by stripping away all the pretension around William, and seeing him as a mathematician. Someone who loves logic and reason, someone who loves balancing scales and making sure everything on every side is equal. And William looked at Sherlock and saw someone devoted to knowledge and learning, to observation and reason, while refusing to compromise himself for it.
They both looked at each other, saw the core of each other, and recognized their cores are the same. They were not just someone they could read like a book, but someone who would go to the same place. Someone who didn’t need to reason and logic out all of the details of their soul like Mycroft could to know and recognize who they were. The souls were the same and didn’t need to come from an outside place of observation to know each other. William understands Sherlock in a way Mycroft does not because William sees the world in the exact same way.
And having someone who is the same sort of person as you is a level of validation to yourself, an understanding that no level of Mycroft’s observation could ever compensate for.

On sexuality assumptions in Sherlock (part 2)
So, I literally forgot this was supposed to be a two-parter and what I was even going to write about in part two, but then I remembered. This is about examining some TJLC/Johnlock evidence that is potentially actually problematic and regressive if taken as fact. Not all of them are ProblematicTM, some are just... weird. These are in no particular order and some are possible stretches, but hey, I am allowed to have meta fun too.
Number 1: Mycroft making the sarcastic comment about John and Sherlock's engagement is proof Sherlock is gay.
The reason why this feels regressive to me is because it implies that you can only make quips about your brother dating a man if your brother is gay. But... why? Why is it only acceptable to make this comment if the men in question date other men? It's not a joke about the concept of homosexuality itself.
The 'joke' is "You have been very close to my brother, moved in with him, and are spending a lot of time with him. What's next, marrying him?" That's the point of the comment. It has nothing to do with anyone being gay.
Mycroft doesn't mean they are actually a couple. I fully believe that if Sherlock had a female flatmate, he would have made the exact same comment. All this tells us is that Mycroft doesn't think being gay is a big deal or possibly that being gay in this world isn't that big of a deal.
First of all, let's entertain the possibility that Mycroft believes or knows that Sherlock is gay. If this implies that Sherlock is gay, isn't telling that to John, whom Mycroft just met, and can't be certain that they ever even discussed the topic, basically outing Sherlock to his flatmate?
Now I talked about the fact it's very possible Mycroft made this comment and the later one hinting about possible John/Sherlock sex in the future (which is much better evidence, but people focus much more on the first one since it's more apparent) is testing the waters to see how John feels about gay people and how he feels about being mistaken for a couple with another man or being accused of having feelings for a man.
If John reacted in a very defensive and/or homophobic manner, it's possible Mycroft would have made sure John stayed far away from his little brother. This in itself doesn't have to mean Mycroft believes Sherlock is gay, just that he is being cautious because bigots are unsafe to be around (let alone live with!) for anyone who isn't a bigot themselves.
Number 2: If Sherlock isn't gay, why doesn't he ever correct the people who think he is or that he's dating John?
Because he doesn't care what they think of him. Related to number 1. It's okay to wish people not to mislabel you. Not wanting people to think you're gay if you're not is not homophobia. But Sherlock just doesn't care. This is in contrast with John, who does correct people and doesn't want newspapers calling him a confirmed bachelor.
Number 3: Sherlock got a case wrong and accused a gay man of being a murderer because he was feeling bad about his Unrequited Gay Love for John, who was dating someone else at the time and he thought gay relationships were doomed to fail (this is about a case on John's blog)
This one is just... why. Sherlock is the Great Detective. He's the world's only consulting detective. Why would a man's sexuality influence his decision solely because he's hoping for a gay relationship for himself and is salty about it? Gay or not gay, there's no indication sexual orientation plays any factor in how he views or treats people. This assumption is just straight-up homophobic. I can't see it any other way. Sherlock thinking a man is a murderer because he's gay... is homophobic. Even if you believe Sherlock is gay, internalized homophobia is a thing. It would also make him look quite incompetent, unprofessional, and just straight-up Bad at his job, the one thing he is unquestionably Good at.
Now we get into the weaker ones, at least according to me.
Number 4: Sherlock knowing purple apart from lilac or making serviettes makes him Camp Gay.
I think this is just Sherlock being Sherlock. He knows the color because he knows and notices the things others don't while ignoring those he deems unimportant. As for the serviettes? Why? Because planning a wedding is a gay stereotype? Sherlock is most likely hyperfocused on the wedding because he's nervous about things changing.
Number 5: John was definitely about to make a Move on Sherlock during the stag night and that was the perfect time to do it
I sincerely hope this idea only extends to fiction (because I don't want to be one of these "if you support this in fiction you support it in real life too!!! people) but if it does not, hopefully none of these people ever become someone's Best Person at the wedding if they think seducing the groom right before a wedding is a good idea. Do they think John was about to make a move and if it didn't work just Mary marry anyway as a consolation prize? Do they think that's what happened in TSO3? We or John had no idea she was an assassin yet, so that would be really shitty.
Number 6: John lied about being bisexual
He didn't. The only way this would be true is if someone asked John if he's bisexual and he said no. Unless you think John being closeted and potentially hiding the truth about his sexuality and being purposefully vague about it is lying. It's not.
Number 7: Mycroft believed Sherlock was about to kiss John in front of Mary when asking for time alone
This one is just strange. A confession is one thing, especially if you are not directly confessing. But why would Sherlock do this? He was going to his death and had nothing to lose? Why would he do it in front of Mary? And Mycroft? And the other agents who I think were also still there? Why? Was he sure John would kiss him back? Did he even care?
Miscellaneous: John didn't want Sherlock looking at his laptop because he has a bunch of Gay Porn there
Or... because it's an invasion of privacy? This one isn't Problematic, it's just a stretch.

Mycroft Holmes x Bethany Wheeler (OFC)
Story Masterlist
Chapter 10 - Background Check
It was a long few days where Mycroft was overseeing the doctoring of footage to cover for Sherlock’s actions. It wasn’t easy, but they eventually got there with a cover story to go with it, an itchy trigger finger from an over eager squaddie, that was the story they were running with. For the most part, no one would ever see the footage or have any reason to ask about Magnusson, but there always had to be a plan just in case.
Mycroft managed to get Sherlock into a meeting with himself Lady Smallwood and Sir Edwin to go over the new story, he knew Sherlock wouldn’t like it, but he didn’t have a choice, this was happening and he needed to deal with it like an adult.
‘What you’re about to see is classified beyond top secret,’ Mycroft began once everyone had settled. ‘Is that quite clear? Don’t minute any of this.’ He said, seeing Vivienne about to take notes. ‘Once beyond these walls, you must never speak of it. A D-notice has been slapped on the entire incident. Only those within this room, codenames Antarctica, Langdale, Porlock and Love will ever know the whole truth. As far as anyone else is concerned, going to the Prime Minister and way beyond, Charles Augustus- Are you tweeting?’ He exclaimed, catching a glimpse of Sherlock’s phone.
‘No.’ Sherlock said, trying to hide his phone.
‘Well, that’s what it looks like!’
‘Of course, I’m not tweeting, why would I be tweeting?’
‘Give me that.’ Mycroft said, going in to grab the phone from Sherlock’s hand.
‘What? No.’
There was a minor scrap, but Mycroft came out victorious, letting out an exasperated sigh as he looked at what Sherlock had been doing.
‘Back on terra firm…’
‘Don’t read it out.’ Sherlock rolled his eyes.
‘Free as a bird.’
‘God, you’re such a spoil sport.’
‘Will you take this matter seriously, Sherlock!’ Mycroft demanded.
‘I am taking it seriously, what makes you think I’m not taking it seriously?’
‘Hashtag oh what a beautiful morning.’
‘Look, not so long ago, I was on a mission that meant certain death, my death and now I’m back in a nice, warm office with my big brother- are those ginger nuts?’ Sherlock was suddenly distracted and it only led to Mycroft rolling his eyes and sighing in frustration.
‘Oh god.’
‘Love ginger nuts!
‘Our doctors said you were clean.’ Lady Smallwood said as Sherlock grabbed a handful of biscuits.
‘I am, utterly. No need for stimulants now, remember? I have work to do.’
‘You’re high as a kite.’ Sir Edwin scoffed.
‘Natural high, I assure you.’ Sherlock said, taking a bite out of his biscuit. ‘I’m just… glad to be alive!’ He sang a little dramatically and even Mycroft was suddenly unsure whether the doctors had gotten it right. ‘What shall we do next? What’s your name?’ He suddenly spotted Vivienne.
‘Vivienne.’ She said, nervously, wondering if she should even have spoken at all.
‘What would you do Vivienne?’
‘I’m sorry?’
‘It’s a beautiful day, what would you do? Go for a stroll? Make a paper aeroplane? Have an ice lolly?’
‘Oh… ice lolly, I suppose.’
‘Ice lolly it is! What’s your favourite?’
‘Oh really, I shouldn’t-‘
‘Go on.’ Sherlock was starting to exasperate everyone.
‘Do they still do Mivvies?’
‘Mr Holmes.’ Lady Smallwood cut through everyone.
‘Yes.’ Both Mycroft and Sherlock answered at the same time.
‘We do need to get on.’ Lady Smallwood warned.
‘Yes, of course.’ Mycroft nodded, apologetically. He played the footage of Magnusson appearing to get shot by someone else, not Sherlock.
‘I see.’ Sherlock said, having calmed down a little. ‘Who is supposed to have shot him then?’
‘An over eager squaddie with an itchy trigger finger, that’s who.’
‘That’s not what happened at all.’ Sherlock disapproved, but this was the way out.
‘It is now.’ Mycroft told him.
‘Remarkable.’ Lady Smallwood said, staring at the doctored footage. ‘How did you do it?’
‘We have some very talented people working here.’ Sir Edwin seemed rather proud of his lie. ‘If James Moriarty can hack every TV screen in the land, rest assured we have the tech to doctor a bit of security footage. That is now the official version, the version anyone we want to will see.’
‘No need to go to the trouble of some sort of official pardon. It seems you’re off the hook, Mr Holmes.’ Lady Smallwood said, annoyed at everything the same as Mycroft who folded his arms and waited for a thanks from his little brother. ‘You’re home and dry.’
‘Okay, cheers.’ Sherlock said, getting up to put his coat on and leave.
‘Obviously there’s unfinished business. Moriarty.’ There was a new tension in the room.
‘I told you, Moriarty’s dead.’ Sherlock said with a mouthful of biscuit, Mycroft wished he could just show a little respect.
‘You say he filmed that video message before he died?’
‘Yes.’
‘You also say you know what he’s going to do next? What does that mean?’
‘Perhaps,’ Sir Edwin cut in. ‘That’s all there is to it. Perhaps he’s just trying to frighten you.’
‘No, no, he would never be that disappointing.’ Sherlock shook his head, thinking. ‘He’s planned something, something long term. Something that would take effect if he never made it off that rooftop.’ Mycroft just watched him curiously, something ticking away in the back of his mind, something he really didn’t want to think about. ‘Posthumous revenge. No, better than that. Posthumous game.’
‘We brought you back to deal with this.’ Lady Smallwood was fed up of playing games. ‘What are you going to do?’
‘Wait.’
‘Wait?’
‘Of course, wait. I’m the target. Target’s wait.’ Sherlock went to leave the room. ‘Look, whatever’s coming, whatever he’s got lined up, I’ll know when it begins. I always know when the game is on. You know why?’
‘Why?’ Lady Smallwood rolled her eyes.
‘Because I love it.’ Sherlock said leaving, making Mycroft roll his eyes again and allowed Sherlock to go.
‘He’d better be right, Mycroft.’
It was Lady Smallwood’s final warning before Mycroft left the room to return to work. He was annoyed that he couldn’t even get a simple thanks from Sherlock for all the trouble he caused, but he honestly wasn’t sure what he expected.
In the following few weeks he regularly checked in with Sherlock, finding out if he’d made any progress with Moriarty, but all he’d been doing was solving cases. Mycroft instead turned his attention to Bethany, he got regular updates on her progress at school, exams were just around the corner and she was looking at placements within a few institutions he was closely connected to.
‘Sir,’ Anthea walked into his office with an odd spring in her step. Mycroft frowned as she placed a file down on his desk. ‘Thought you might want to see this.’
When he opened the file, he was surprised to find that one of his colleagues, Scott Mathieson, was looking at a list of graduates, Bethany’s name was on the list. Mycroft frowned slightly, this was research into biological gene therapy, Bethany’s speciality was chemistry based science. He nodded to Anthea and listened to his assistant leaving.
According to the file, Mathieson was keen to take Bethany under his wing and offer her a placement in her third year with the potential to fund her masters and PhD and offer her a job. How had Mycroft not noticed how good she was in school?
Your name has appeared in a file on my desk. – MH
What? What do you mean? I’ve been at John and Mary’s helping with the baby, she’s due in a couple of days, I haven’t been running around with Sherlock for ages. – BW
Mycroft chuckled at her sudden panic.
Not Sherlock, though glad to hear you’ve been keeping out of trouble, especially with the Moriarty business. No, it came up in a file with a list of names for me to do background checks on before being considered for placement or work at Dr Scott Mathieson’s lab. – MH
Jesus Mycroft! You scared me half to death! I thought someone might have been after me. I didn’t realise it was just a bloody background check! – BW
If there’s anything you’d like to confess to, now is the time. – MH
Oh, I’m sure there’s plenty I could confess to, but nothing that would stop me being put on placement. – BW
You have me intrigued. – MH
I’m sure I do. – BW
Mycroft smiled down at his phone, he contemplated asking her a follow up question, but decided against it.
What kind of information comes up in a background check? – BW
Mycroft frowned, not sure why she was asking.
Yours won’t be that extensive unless we find something of note. We’ll look at the basics, family history, education, any recent events that make you ineligible to work within any co-operations that have a close connection the British government and anything that may make you susceptible to blackmail or taking bribes in the future. Why? – MH
It was a while before she answered and it didn’t make Mycroft sit particularly comfortably.
My mum was a doctor who went to Africa to help children who needed medicine and vaccines. She wanted to help them live without fear that other people’s children could be affected by the lack of basic needs like food and clean water. My father was a lecturer at Cambridge, he taught Engineering, he specialised in Aerospace engineering, I have no idea the depth of the projects he was involved with, but he did a lot of work with NASA in his spare time. They’ve never been poor, but always made sure to teach me how to earn my money and not expect it. I went to a public school, got decent enough grades, never anything exceptional, but I studied Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Music at A level. I suppose recent incidents would only involve Sherlock and I’m fairly certain you’re not going to hold any of it against me. I went travelling with my parents before coming back home to get my degree, my mum was stationed in Kenya, I went there for a couple of years and then to my dad in America, I didn’t like the people he worked with so only spent eight months there, before returning to England and finding a place to live with some friends. Oh, and Wheeler is my mother’s maiden name, my real last name is Colbeck, that’s what I was born with anyway, I’m sure when you do your check, it’ll become obvious why I changed it to Wheeler. I know you’re going to find all this stuff out and probably more, but I feel like you should hear some of those things from me personally, because they are personal. – BW
Mycroft took a moment to assess the information she had provided. The more prominent detail was that of her last name, why would she not go by the name she was born with? Colbeck was a familiar name to Mycroft, but that didn’t necessarily mean anything.
Thank you for telling me. I can understand why you felt it important. And no, anything involving Sherlock will not be held against you, I can assure you. You studied music? Seems like an out of place choice for a scientist. – MH
I suppose it does. It was enjoyable though. – BW
Mycroft wondered if there was any more to that statement than she was letting on, but suddenly the image of her hand tracing over his in the back of his car jumped to mind. Her fingers were long and slender, like that of a pianist. It suddenly occurred to him that there was a lot he didn’t know about her.
Pianist? – MH
Indeed. – BW
There was something nice about her confirmation, something cheeky and playful.
Perhaps, if you find the time, we could go to dinner again and you could save me a background check. There’s quite a few I need to get through these days. – MH
If you have so much to do, wouldn’t an evening spent working be more productive than an evening spent indulging in my small talk? – BW
Perhaps, but that would depend entirely on the agenda. – MH
And what exactly is your agenda, Mr Holmes? – BW
Mycroft suddenly realised he was staring down at his phone, flirting. If anyone walked in on him at that moment, they would surely know he was distracted and not getting on with work.
Let me know if you have an evening free. – MH
He left it there and she didn’t message him back. Mycroft wondered if he should have continued down this path at all, but for the first time in his life, he was being made happy by another human being and one that seemed to be more interested in him than his brother.
Mycroft heard about Mary giving birth and the christening but had yet to hear from Bethany. She had gone to the christening because Sherlock had seen fit to send him a picture of her and Molly posing together. She wore a white dress with green and yellow flowered pattern and a cream suit jacket rolled up to her elbows. She was again, stunning.
Mycroft never replied to his brother when he sent photos, he didn’t feel the need, but he was grateful nonetheless that Sherlock went to the trouble making sure he was kept up to date.
It was another couple of months and Mycroft had done his background checks on the list, finding nothing of note and wondering if Bethany just didn’t want to go to dinner with him. It hurt a little, but soon found out from Sherlock that she had been working most evenings and when she wasn’t working, she was either in the labs doing workshops, writing essays until the morning hours or with Mrs Hudson in the café. Plain and simple, she just didn’t have time.
‘Mycroft.’ Lady Smallwood said as she rounded the corner of a corridor Mycroft often found himself walking down, he suspected she wasn’t there by chance.
‘Lady Smallwood.’ He nodded curtly.
‘Those background checks for Mathieson, find anything of note?’ She asked, he knew where this was going a mile off and he’d prepared an answer.
‘If you’re referring to Miss Wheeler-‘
‘Miss Wheeler? I thought it came up that her name was in fact Colbeck?’
‘It did, but Wheeler is the name she has chosen to go by and the one she has legally changed it to.’ Mycroft explained. ‘Colbeck was her birth name and Wheeler is her mother’s maiden name, hardly a reason to dismiss her as a candidate. And before you ask, I was in possession of that information long before the background check became necessary.’
‘She’s a bloody student Mycroft!’ Lady Smallwood hissed.
‘I am aware.’
‘It’s not appropriate for you to be seen socialising with a student,’ she warned a little quieter. ‘If the press get a hold of this, they will have a field day. She’s barely an adult.’
‘Miss Wheeler is twenty-seven years old, we employ many graduates below that age and hardly treat them as children...’ Mycroft was in no mood to be warned. ‘She made me aware of her given name some time ago and eluded to the fact that she changed it for a reason. Dr Richard Colbeck, her father and Dr Kathleen Colbeck, her mother, are fine examples of what this country is capable of and two people whose names literally open doors. I can imagine the pressure of being the daughter of such respected scholars is difficult enough for her to deal with, let alone rumours flying about her personal life. Which, I should point out, is all but existent. Miss Wheeler currently works part time at a hotel in Mayfair as a waitress and a café in Baker Street, in between working she studies, so please tell me what time she could possibly devote to anything else?’
Lady Smallwood didn’t seem to be any calmer. ‘You told me it was a business dinner, that she specialised in chemistry.’
‘She does,’ Mycroft shot back. ‘Though from what I hear, she’s thinking about forensic research as a possible career choice along with gene therapy and several other pathways available to her.’
‘Why did you really have dinner with her that night?’ She cut straight to the point and Mycroft hadn’t anticipated the response, but it did seem like she was jealous, maybe Bethany was right.
‘Fine.’ Mycroft said, looking down and giving into what she really wanted. ‘We were catching up. Miss Wheeler is also a friend of my brother’s and I wanted to ensure that all parties were safe and non-threatening to each other. Miss Wheeler is not aware of that fact.’
‘So, what did she think it was? A date?’
‘Of course not,’ Mycroft defended. ‘I told her I wanted to catch up. Her conclusion from that statement is unknown to me.’
Lady Smallwood didn’t seem at all convinced. ‘For Christ’s sake, Mycroft. Look, if you’re seeing this girl-‘
‘Lady Smallwood,’ Mycroft chuckled. ‘What time do you think I have for a personal life? Particularly one that involves a woman whose parents can make our lives difficult on a whim. I am not “seeing her” as you so poetically put it, but you may consider her under my protection. That should be enough for you.’
Mycroft didn’t bother saying anything else, he could see he made his point clear, but it only put him in a foul mood. Part of him wished he could answer yes, but that presented its own problems and he wasn’t ready to deal with that just yet.
He worked hard over the next couple of weeks, receiving the odd text from Sherlock and one that made his heart skip a couple of beats.
Exams are nearly done! Just one more to go and I’ll be home and dry. Sorry it’s been ages, I just didn’t want to get distracted, I also figured if you’re doing background checks on me, it’s probably not best to be seen having dinner. I’m not sure if that was clear or even the right decision, but if you still want to, I’ll be free from Saturday onwards. Last exam is Friday afternoon. Let me know. – BW
Mycroft sat back at his desk and ran his hands over his face. He had no idea what he was supposed to do. What did he say? He couldn’t risk being seen with her since Lady Smallwood had pointed out the problem the press posed, but he also couldn’t say no.
I will work out the details and let you know. – MH
It was all he could say. It wasn’t a lie, but he felt awful for saying.
‘Sir?’ Anthea called from his door. ‘It’s your brother.’ Mycroft sighed and took a few seconds to prepare himself.
Sherlock came barging in and handed him a phone, presumably with what was John and Mary’s baby, but he offered no explanation beyond that. He started talking about a broken bust of Margaret Thatcher and somehow it started to make sense, but not quickly enough for his liking.
‘I met her once.’ Mycroft said, remembering the moment well.
‘Thatcher?’ Sherlock asked, pacing.
‘Rather arrogant, I thought.’
‘You thought that?’
‘I know.’ Mycroft chuckled. ‘Why am I looking at this?’ He indicated the phone.
‘That’s her, John and Mary’s baby.’
‘Oh, I see, yes. Looks very… fully functioning.’
‘Is that really the best you can do?’
‘Sorry, I’ve never been very good with them.’
‘Babies?’
‘Humans.’ Mycroft smiled, handing back the phone.
‘Beth will be so disappointed.’
‘Why?’
‘She’s been working hard at school, didn’t you hear? Nearly finished her exams, well on her way to getting the top grades and is now babysitting when she can.’
‘I don’t understand.’
‘She’s good with the baby. She likes children.’
‘Her mother worked with children, it’s no surprise. But why would she be disappointed?’
‘I have no idea, I just wanted to see if you’d dwell on the subject.’
‘Sherlock.’ Mycroft sighed, half in warning.
‘Moriarty. Did he have any connection with Thatcher? Any interest in her?’
‘Why on earth would he?’’ It seemed an odd question.
‘I don’t know, you tell me.’
Mycroft sniffed and leaned over the Moriarty file that he’d been looking at before Sherlock’s arrival. ‘In the last year of his life, James Moriarty was involved with four political assassinations, over seventy assorted robberies and terrorist attacks, including a chemical weapons factory in North Korea, and had latterly shown some interest in tracking down the Black Pearl of the Borgias, which is still missing, by the way, in case you feel like applying yourself to something practical.’
‘It’s a pearl, get another one.’ Sherlock snapped, making Mycroft roll his eyes. ‘Something important about this. I’m sure, maybe it’s Moriarty. Maybe it’s not. But something’s coming.’
Mycroft whilst mildly amused by his brother’s antics, was slightly concerned that he was investing himself in something that may turn out to be nothing. ‘Are you having a premonition, brother mine?’
‘The world is woven from billions of lives, every strand crossing over every other. What we call premonitions is just movement of the web. If you could attenuate to every strand of quivering data, the future would be entirely calculable, as inevitable as mathematics.’
‘Appointment in Samarra.’ Mycroft finally figured out where this was going.
‘I’m sorry?’
‘The merchant who can’t outrun death,’ Mycroft went on. ‘You always hated that story as a child. Less keen on predestination back then.’
‘I’m not sure I like it now.’
‘You wrote your own version as I remember. Appointment in Sumatra. The merchant goes to a different city and is perfectly fine.’
‘Good night Mycroft.’ Sherlock grabbed his coat to leave.
‘Then he becomes a pirate for some reason.’
‘Keep me informed.’
‘Of what?’
‘Absolutely no idea.’
And with that, Sherlock was gone. Mycroft wasn’t exactly sure what he was to make of his brother’s appearance, but he did look over the Moriarty case file just in case he’d missed something. Nothing jumped out at him, but then he didn’t expect anything to.
He thought more and more on Bethany, he wanted to see her, just talk to her, but he wasn’t sure dinner was the best idea. He decided instead to phone her late on Saturday evening once her exams were finished.
‘Mycroft, hi.’ She didn’t answer with her usual cheery tone.
‘Everything alright?’ He asked, taking a sip from his scotch and observing the fire in front of him.
‘Yeah, it’s fine, it’s just those guys in the house down the road. They just…’ she took a breath and cleared her throat. ‘Never mind. How are you? Is this a social call or am I in trouble?’
‘I wanted to congratulate you on finishing your exams.’ He said, not being convinced by her tone.
‘Oh thanks,’ that was better, a slight lift. ‘Yeah, I finished the last one yesterday, no idea how I did, but I feel pretty confident so maybe it’s fine. It’s just a waiting game now.’
There was an awkward pause between them. ‘Are you sure you’re alright?’ Mycroft asked.
Bethany let a long breath go. ‘You don’t need to worry, everything’s fine. What about you? It’s been a while since we last talked properly, what’s been going on? Any secrets you’d like to share?’
Mycroft took another sip of scotch. ‘Oh yes, are you sitting comfortably? I’ll just run through the list of state secrets I’ve uncovered today.’
‘Great, let me just grab some wine.’ She chuckled and Mycroft felt his heart lift some more. He loved that sound. ‘So, come on then, my background check, you want to talk about it?’
‘Why would I?’
‘I don’t know, because I told you my name was Wheeler when I was born Colbeck?’
‘Yes, but you legally changed it to Wheeler and you took the opportunity to tell me that before I even started the check.’ Mycroft explained. ‘What more is there to talk about?’
Bethany again paused. ‘So, you’re not upset that I didn’t tell you in the beginning?’
‘It never came up and I can’t imagine it would stay that way forever, so why would I be upset?’
He listened to her chuckling away a little more confused than anything. ‘I’m sorry, you’re right, it was a stupid question.’
‘Not at all.’ Mycroft suddenly had a thought. ‘Is that why you prefer to be called Bethany?’
‘Beth, if I can ever convince you to call me that, but yeah, partly that, partly…’ she stopped and he could hear her moving around, was she in bed? ‘Look, I know that my parents are these amazing people, but they spent their childhoods living in poverty, they worked hard to get to where they are, they’re principled and hard working people. I didn’t want to get anywhere just because I’m their daughter. It’s too much pressure, you know?’
Mycroft was simply hypnotised listening to her speak. ‘I can imagine.’ He said taking another drink. ‘We should have dinner again, when you get your results. We should celebrate.’
‘Do you think that’s a good idea?’
‘Why wouldn’t it be?’
‘Because if you know who I really am, others will know as well and people might start to talk.’
‘Why would that affect us having dinner?’ Mycroft had asked the question before he could stop himself.
‘Okay, look I just don’t want to cause any trouble for you,’ she said it as plainly as she could. ‘Lady Smallwood seemed really annoyed when she came to the table last time and I don’t want your life to be made anymore difficult.’
‘You shouldn’t worry so much about that,’ Mycroft finished his scotch. ‘If I thought it would cause any hassle I wouldn’t ask. Perhaps we don’t go out for dinner, we could watch another film? Or something else?’ Mycroft knew he was making a hash of things. He was messing up everything.
‘Okay.’ Bethany said, finally. ‘I’ll think about it.’
‘Good.’ Mycroft nodded. ‘Let me know.’
‘I will.’ He could hear her smiling and it made him happy. Maybe he could make this work. ‘Goodnight Mycroft.’
‘Goodnight Bethany.’ He said and hung up.

from your amazing bots I got a feeling that you might be or were a writer. Were/are you a writer?
caught me red handed, yes i am. but thank you, i'm glad you think they are. i've been a big reader since first grade, writer since in fourth grade. it's funny because i didn't learn to read until first grade. anyways, i still am a writer, i just write and keep the works on docs, i wanted to write and post again but i'm still working out what i'll write and post exactly. also idk if i want to post my actual writings on this blog, yk?
i don't want to limit myself to one shots, to be honest. i like stories with actual plots and deaths and substance.
for example, my enola holmes fans, i was working out a story with mycroft, renowned investigator ─ role model for two great detectives, sherlock and enola. despite this "greatness" and skill he claims to have, he was unable to solve one case, that case being his former classmate, ___. of course, it would be no easy case to solve, ___ would make sure of that, but he'd pull at loose threads till there was no dress left, literally and figuratively.
or, for my harry potter fans. he was a prince and she was his kingdom, severus and ___ were the same side of two coins, destined for destruction. falling in love was easy for severus, staying in love was easier, the hardest part would be rekindling the ghost of a flame when his camelot returned as a fellow teacher at hogwarts.
^ side plot: ___, james' older "twin", was a role model for her little brother despite being the two of them being so different. of course, being james' best friend, sirius found himself trying to save his best friend's sister from the annoying slytherin that was severus snape. ─ in harry's pursuit of finding anyone that may be considered his family, sirius black finds out what came of his disappeared love.
there is also my lady of the ring, a fred fic. sixteen minute bride, another sirius one. i do have some pjo ones, but my main two are downright depressing.
anyways, big tangent but i love talking abt my writings. most of them are on hold, for obvious reasons, but no one can see them so it doesn't matter. btw, ___ are my ocs, but i didn't name them for the sake of not being confusing. i also have original stories cooking up, but idk if you guys want to hear about those.

Hey Steph! After lurking in the extraordinarily talented Sherlock fandom since mid-2018 and starting countless fics that I was too intimidated to continue, I finally finished a fic and posted it. I'd like to respectfully request one of your signature signal boosts for my little Fandom Trumps Hate offering, if that's alright? Thank you - as always - for your continued dedication to this community! 💜

======
HI LOVELY!!

Newt Appreciation Month, day 15: Favourite Newt AU!
Tumblr media
Ah there are a good few AUs that I like, and there are so many good ones out there. I’ve read a good few. There’s one I’m reading at the moment a part of a series, where Newt has managed to save the Sudenese girl, and adopts her. I think the first one is called something new? The author writes some amazing stories, they capture Newt so well and keep him cannon but the stories themselves are not rally cannon at all. I’m still waiting for them to finish the current one I’m reading. Another AU I really enjoyed reading was where Newt ended up teaching at Ilvermorny as the care of magical creatures teacher, while Tina I think was the DADA. It was such a fun read, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called. I’ve read lots and lots of AUs where Newt returns to NY to give Tina her copy of his book. That’s because there are a lot of them out there, compared to any other trope. And most of them written a lot better than Newt x reader stuff. And I have yet to find a good Newt x OC fanfic out there. I’m also currently reading a really good AU based on the first FB film, where Newt ends up working with muggle detectives trying to solve the mystery behind the attacks that are happening in Toronto. While trying to recapture his creatures. Tina and Queenie end up being part of the case and helping Newt with finding some creatures, after being taken off the case investigating the Barebone residence and a murder enquiry of sorts. But each of them have a different love interest, so not NewTina or Jacqueenie. In fact Jacob doesn’t really feature in this. It’s called the curious case of Mr Scamander which can be found on FF.net. It’s really fun and interesting read so far. Loving it.
But my favourite AU crossover is, this one right here:
Which was written by my wonderful friend @newt-and-salamander and gifted to me for my birthday, although she had no idea that she was gifting it to me for that reason. Haha! 😂 how can this not be my favourite, it involves two amazing characters, played by two amazing actors. This is a story where Sherlock helps Newt look for his case and the two become good friends, while Jacob and Wattson become friends bonding over Newt and sherlock, while Mycroft and Theseus becomes friends and bond over the idiocy of both their brothers. I mean what else are big brothers going to bond over. :D! I recommend everyone read it, do it now. Come on you know you all want to!!

Fuck it here’s some more of my Sherlock Holmes HC’s. Obviously using modern language for the queer based ones because Victorians had different terminology to us
Holmes is Demi-Gay and, obviously, autistic as fuck. The last one is just canon anyway but still. He’s had sexual relations with men in the past but romantically he has to form a connection first and obviously the only person he’s done this with is Watson lol
Watson is bisexual as fuck case closed. Had relations with men both in his youth and military days but is still wholly unprepared for when Holmes asks if he’s allowed to court him
Mrs Hudson and Mycroft are both aro-ace and secret penpals who gossip about our lads All The Time
Lestrade noticed Holmes’ feelings for Watson before Holmes did himself and was immensely smug about being the one to tell him so. Sometimes he falls asleep smiling as he remembers the dumbfounded look on Holmes’ face at the time
Lestrade and Gregson have a “polite animosity” towards eachother. They’re rivals in the force and have known eachother for years. They both bully Hopkins as if he were their baby brother
Hopkins has a crush on Holmes you cannot convince me otherwise
Lestrade met his wife sometime in 1883-1884 and was so tongue-tied around her that Holmes referred to him as a “public embarrassment”
Watson made the mistake once of inviting Lestrade into their rooms when the man was moaning about his love life and has regretted that choice ever since
Mary Morstan was never once jealous of the affection Watson held for Holmes and would never ask him to choose one of them over the other. She did, however, take great amusement in seeing how uncomfortable Holmes was in her company and would invite him to dinner with her and her husband just to watch him squirm a little
Though he did not personally consider Mary a friend, Holmes did hold affection for her, particularly since she was a fan of opera like himself
One of the most memorable cases in Lestrade and Holmes’ memory was when Watson ended up running into a good handful of his past “flames” all of whom helped make up his “three continent reputation.” It was a mortifying and somewhat terrifying time for him, and a very entertaining one for his friends
Watson wears corsets when he knows he won’t be doing much running around on cases. The first time Holmes noticed this all thought ground to a sudden halt
If Lestrade and Gregson end up on the same case the smart thing to do is try not to get caught in their crossfire
Hopkins has a big multi-coloured cat named Treacle

I remember you talking about it once and I'm curious, so how about the Chuuran Sherlock!AU?
oh, i love this au and i love them, so here you go nonnie! also happy chuuya day btw. ^^
for the ‘send me an au and i’ll give you 5+ headcanons about it’ meme. ➥ CHUURAN + SHERLOCK!AU.
ranpo is an infamous detective, well known for his genius as well as for his idyosincratic, whimsical attitude. he has been working mainly on commission or when he is consulted forever — he doesn't really need the money, this is simply the best place for he to be given how bad he fits in society and conventions. he is an orphan, his adoptive father met him when he was fourteen and helped him find a place for himself in a world that ranpo, with his overly brilliant mind and cunning bluntness, didn't understand and still finds silly and weird to this day. despite his childish antics, he lived by himself in a building own by an elderly man (hirotsu) who is also his landlord. that is, until chuuya came along.
chuuya has a military past full of violence that preceeds the time he served in the army, and goes back to his upbringing first on the streets and then in a criminal organisation. he still has sharp edges and a harsh personality that make him look like a 'punk', but is actually, deep down, very attentive and person, albeit impatient and hot-headed. he is suppodely retired and dedicated to lead a new life—a new job. and this intention of his brought him in quite an unexpected situation. or well, it's not weird to share a place with somebody when you are twenty-four and not exactly rich, but his flatmate? he is as weird as he is infuriatingly interesting and, get this, endearing.
so yes, they perfectly fit the john/ock dynamic, i would even say they exceed it, and if you are wondering: yes, they are an item. they were mistaken as a couple so many times the sexual tension didn't take too long to flare up, so even if romantically speaking it took them more time (because each of them has his own pace and perspective) and from an outsider's point of view their relationship is borderline ambiguous, they sleep and live together. and they fit. ranpo takes chuuya on his cases — actually insists to have him there as he needs someone not to get lost and finds everybody else annoying and dense — because he knows chuuya, how he craves the thrill and the challenge; how wild he is. chuuya, on the other hand, despite the exasperation and the grumbling keeps ranpo in check, both by making sure he doesn't get lost and eats a vegetable once in a while and by keeping him in check — like a moral compass, because ranpo is all razor-sharp tongue and conceived loneliness, and chuuya understands him. they obviously don't always see eye to eye, but they do see each other, and that's enough. they can and do work from that.
in this au, mycroft is played by dazai: he and ranpo are somewhat like brothers, refer to each other as such anyway, and they are so alike that, as much as chuuya hates it because he doesn't like dazai, have some sort of bond. an understanding, for sure. and as of molly, that is yosano! with that the difference that there are no romantic feelings involved; she and ranpo are long-time friends, very close, almost like siblings. yosano actually gets along well with chuuya, too, they are both dangerous and strong. which is neat, you know? sadly for her, it also means that nobody knows chuuya and ranpo's couple antics better.
ranpo and chuuya have the habit to have breakfast and sometimes lunch or dinner at this one restaurant in particular whose the owner has known ranpo for years and always happily sets up a table for them — right next to the big window you can watch the rest of the street from. it's their favorite spot: they have this game of people-watching, where they observe and make deductions. it's easy for ranpo, as that is his job and his greatest skill, but it's challenging for chuuya, and that is the goal. they sit there, and then the younger man points at someone and deduces everything he can about them. then he looks at ranpo and asks, "did i miss anything?" and well, surely he missed something, ranpo states that without batting an eye, but he is not unkind. after all, for someone without his gift it is still a very good guess and it's chuuya, duh — not a blind idiot you can literally meet at any corner of the street!
