One of Metallica's most controversial albums, St. Anger, was released in 2003. The disc corresponded to its time: raw, aggressive nu metal, in which trash remained only as one of the elements. This is shocking in itself, but the band hit even harder with the video for the title song — it was filmed in San Quentin prison, with prisoners. The band recorded fragments for the video right in the courtyard of the prison, surrounded by prisoners, who were separated from the musicians by only a few guards. Some moments were filmed in other parts of the institution. Considering how aggressive Metallica's music was at that moment, it looks creepy and brutal, as it was intended.

In addition to filming the video, the band also gave a free concert for the prisoners. This is Metallica's first live show with bassist Robert Trujillo. It was not filmed on video, but the audio recording remained. Judging by the poster "Metallica rules the world!" in the hands of prisoners in one of the photos from this concert, the prison residents were happy.
