Bryan sometimes wondered if he should have told his daughter Sarah about his plan to help her with her bullying problem - but by now it was far too late.

It wasn't like there was much of Bryan left anyway. Beckie had seen to that.

It had all started a few weeks ago when Sarah had come home in tears again. She told her Dad that she was being emotionally manipulated and abused by a brat in her class, Beckie.

It was like some evil hive mind had taken control of the girls and made them think and act just like Beckie.

That's why Bryan decided to have it out with Beckie. This couldn't go on.

He didn't tell Sarah his plan - not that it was much of a plan. Just go and confront Beckie, get her to leave his daughter alone.

He drove over to the luxurious condo where Beckie and her rich divorced Mom (four husbands) lived. There was a pink Landrover parked on the drive and a giant swimming pool at the back.

Banging on the door Bryan was relieved when Beckie opened it. She was wearing a tiny LA Boutine bikini set and her long blonde hair fell wantonly over her shoulders. It was hard to read her expression thanks to the mirror shades she wore.

Beckie's whole demeanour changed as she realised who he was. Her lips twitched into a naughty smile and her blue eyes twinkled excitedly as she tore off her shades. It wasn't the reaction he had expected.

Giggling excitedly, Beckie yanked Bryan into the house. Sliding her small sexy hand into his she lead him inside and he dazedly followed.

After years of reading Greek mythology adaptations, watching Greek mythology adaptations, listening to Greek mythology adaptations, and making my own Greek mythology adaptations, I've decided that there are two ways in which I will accept Hades as a villain.

The first is the way Hadestown handles him---yes, he's sympathetic and shown to care for his wife, which is a point, but they don't go the stereotypical route of "oh, Hades is the ruler of the afterlife, which is called the 'Underworld' and must therefore be hell? Definitely an evil goth boy, death gods are always evil because death is scary." No, they recognize the fact that Hades is the god of wealth, and use an incredible allegory of capitalism and industrialization that is of course at odds with his wife's solarpunk nature and her constant refrain of "it ain't right and it ain't natural" at her husband's practices. Stories where capitalism is the villain are always some of my favorites, and Hades does admittedly slide perfectly into that role as the god of riches... who just so happens to have dominion over souls.

And the second is one that I don't believe I've really ever seen, but is so, so, so fucking compelling to me, and it's Hades going the "you want a villain, I'll show you a villain" route---something that would fit in perfectly with a modern adaptation.

It would be so damn fun to see a Hades who has been constantly vilified through no fault of his own, either by Zeus or the narrative shifting as culture has shifted, seeing his image change from the passive and fair king of the afterlife who loved his wife and treated her as an equal to the cruel king of hell who keeps his wife captive and rules his domain with an iron fist. Hades, who was already the black sheep when his stories were first being told, and who now has to hear that he's the evil god while his misogynistic brothers are getting off scott-free and are barely even blamed for their rampant infidelity. Hades, who never did anything wrong other than take his brother's horrible advice once and always tried to be hardworking, fair, patient, and understanding. Hades, who had suffered the longest at his father's hand and likely would have taken the throne had Kronos not been a fucking monster, and yet had to watch as Zeus, who'd avoided all of the trauma and had been doted on and treated like a perfect prince his entire life, ended up getting all the glory and reward while not even letting Hades have the dignity of being an Olympian...

After thousands of years of that, it wouldn't take long for Hades to snap.

And I would adore to see a story where Hades claims the role of the villain out of trauma and bitterness and anger, and for it to culminate in a third-act breakdown where he realizes he's lost sight of himself but for him to still get the catharsis of letting it all out

One of them is an avatar of an eldricht god of fear, the other one serves a lonely god at some point. They try to be good but they actually did some terrible things. Jon ate some people's fear, re-opening their trauma. Martin is all about murdering the people who hurt them, once the apocalypse rolls around. They're canonically in love.

They literally bring the end of the world about, and Jon is the human embodiment of the fear of being watched. They also both have no concept of private property or privacy in general (they have broken into so many places). They also both share an affection for cows. They were living their best cottagecore life as the entire world was being thrown into a fear filled apocalypse that they caused.

For Edward Nygma and Oswald Cobblepot :

they ARE evil and they DO actually murder people together. and sometimes they try to kill each other. literally bonded over being murders when they first met. have done innumerable crimes since. gotham's worst on/off-couple.

The epitome of "the couple that kills together stays together" except that they are also often trying to kill each other. But that's just how love is sometimes. But yeah, Oswald confesses his love for Ed, except he also murdered Ed's girlfriend a little, then Ed tries to kill him, but then he hallucinates Oswald's ghost singing seductively to him because he's also definitely in love with him. They both do so much murder and they are both so in love with each other in such a messed up but ultimately devoted way; I genuinely think they are the most murderous and husbandly murder husbands out there. Plus they have all the delightful campy themed flair of Batman villains!

Goth x nerd couple except they're campy supervillains who like to spice their gay drama up with murder and they have soooo many issues. The spicing it up with murder includes both killing the other's partner out of jealousy and just trying to kill each other many MANY times. I wish the memory of this show was fresh enough in my mind to give you a breakdown of their relationship but alas. Anyway, these two are like the most iconic thing in this show for me, not only for their relationship but their personalities individually

Wonderland of Love - done

It was a delightful drama - visually stunning, great chemistry. I am incredibly fond of Xu Kai, and it's proof of how much that I still remained fond of him after his recent string of shudder-inducing choices (Court Lady, Royal Feast, the gaming thing, that modern with YM, Snow Eagle Lord.) But what a pleasure to watch a Xu Kai drama I genuinely enjoy and not suffer through.

You can tell that censorship had FWSC hemmed tighter than that second in command was clutching his evil boss' urn - we all know if she had her druthers, the stupid emperor would have been taken out in a coup by Li Ni (who would have actually got to kill one of his brothers) and there would have been a lot more of ambition and murder (the secondary girl? would have so been murdered!) But on the upside, we also got a blissful OTP ending and a ML who is probably the sole drama ML this year that I actually would want to be married to in RL.

Anyway, this was so delicious for my not-so-inner angst junkie:

Yes, our ML has kept the corpse of his wife around, slept by it, changed it etc. However wholesome, this is still a FWSC tale. And now he's giving the corpse a sword and taking her coffin in battle. I...I...I...this is feeding me!!!

I enjoyed him plain text telling evil secondary girl he will never have another wife, whether CL is alive or not, and to leave or he will kill her. He cuts off her jewelry and I think the lady is lucky this wasn't made a decade ago, or she'd be shorter by a head.

Have you ever considered invading the palace with the coffin of your wife by your side? No? Then don't even talk to me! PEAK GOTH METAL!!!

Li Ni's reaction to this royal order is an arrow to the throat. God, how I wish the narrative let him go all GMP insane!

Sadly, he's there for the prime minister and evil jieshuo people. Why can't we have nice things? But the best part is that FL finally comes back to life, in the middle of the battle, and her first move is to leap out of the coffin with that sword he left her in hand and kill the bad dude in unison with her husband. Battle Couple indeed.

This whole sequence was unbearably lovely but this was my favorite bit:

The ending with him becoming an emperor for ten years and then passing the throne to his cousin and peacing out to live on the border with her and their kids as he wanted was lovely (even if realistically, it's just causing trouble for next generation - you bet his children/grandchildren and the new emperor's kids will end up in some battle) but my favorite part was when he was still emperor of them with their newborn son.

Anyway, this was a lovely lovely lovely chemistry-filled delight and one of my faves of the year!

There's no denying that The Goths were horrible, cruel, evil people. But no one could match Bella Goth's cruelty. Truly only one person mattered to her - herself. Leaving her husband and children in second place. Few people could like a woman so mean and spiteful, and just downright evil. But, of those few people were Mortimer Goth. While he was technically the actual ruler due to his gender, it was common knowledge that Bella helped call the shots just as equally. And Mortimer would do anything his wife asked of him. No ruling was so too strict, ridiculous or downright nasty if it was uttered from Bella Goth's lips.

Unfortunately, those lips were often the cruelest in the land...

Bella yells: Mortimer! How dare I hear about this peasant prophet from my idiot ladies instead of you?

Mortimer: Bella, darling! What is going on? I hate to see you upset.

The thing that always bugged me about the series especially with the fashion is how fucking red they made Tiffanys outfits to the point where it's obnoxious. Now don't get me wrong Tiffany fucking rocks red. But her outfits just scream cookie cutter 60s housewife and it's like. Tiffany is not like that at all, she's much more edgy than that. and I think just because Tiffany is a mother and a wife doesn't mean she has to be constricted to just that. She has a personality and they made her into Betty fucking crocker. Tiffany has always had that hardcore edge that made her so unique but they fucking took that away from her. If you wanted to have that red 1950s biker bombshell aesthetic make her outfits like the ones she had before where she showed skin, wore leather, and had accents to her outfits instead just plain red. For the love of God and stop making her WEAR SPARKLES! all the damn time. It makes her too feminine. She's dark feminine, which means her outfits have to be a reflection of her personality. Where's the leather, where's the chains. Where's the chokers. Where's the corsets. But no Don was like. Let's make her a ditzy blonde who has to rely on her husband to help her, make her defenseless and weak, and make her an obsessive psychotic creep who cheats on her husband because she doesn't love him anymore and let's make her have the wardrobe of Lucille Ball.

She has also become so mean spirited like she use to be so sweet and compassionate nows she's straight up evil and deranged. Like yes she's a killer but she also had moments where she had a heart and wasn't completely emotionless and narcissistic. It makes sense for Chuck's character to be like that but Tiffany is different. Idk man this whole series just pisses me off because none of the shit in that series makes any sense.

One of this conquests brings to the island a being from beyond the time in the guise of a wise priest, sorcerer, necromancer. He is bound in the golden chains but not for long and soon this is the priest who rules the empire and not the king. And should it happen so, princess-now-queen meets a stranger. A winged beast bound by gods to walk the earth, who once upon a time sung divine symphonies and taught dragons how to fly. So when the last wave comes the woman, who once a queen, is carried away by a winged shadow, that was once binding fates in the service of a god.

Khm. So, yes, it is a Tolkien fanfic about Tar-Miriel and Ncharradashthan, the salty maia secretary of Mr. More Goth.

Well, it is not really a fanfic, because I am writing it down and it just lives in my head rent free, but it is the story about these two. About Ncharr coming to Numenor, meeting Tar-Miriel and them becoming friends. Most of the plot is just Ncharr telling her stories about her life and about the world in general, while Numenor is rapidly crashing and burning in the present-times, with Sauron being in charge and Pharazon getting on that Melkor-worshipping MLM grind.

And this particular song lyric is there because Ncharr falls in love with Miriel and like, yah, teehee, they hold hands.

I am not entirely set on how it should end, because on one hand, maybe they still drown with the Numenor due to either wind being too strong, Ncharr wings giving way or her not being able to transform.

And your writing feels so much more natural than original, because... I like original stella because how comedical she is in her evilness (hiring killer right before victim right while dinner is a hella funny thing im ready to forgive all sins and oversimplyfying for it), but actually your version of writing is more relatable, and human-looking, and humane to her. And show her as not a pure evil i love it, since Stella in canon (and fanon because her poor writing) just made into a joke... And it honestly is the thing i don't like.

It felt soo cathartic just to write it and I’d recommend anyone who hates a scene to just rewrite it on your notepad or something because that genuinely helps. The inclusion of Octavia and how his gross sexual exhibitions affect her also felt very important to me. Because he refuses to ever accept it.

Thank youuu for picking my neurons hehe. Writing Stella is interesting because she’s such a blank slate, but there’s so much untouched subtleties. Her rage tendencies, her need to have money, an obsession with parties and stimulation, clearly the only source of excitement in her life.

Where are the moms who kill husbands? Stella is the only one, and this action makes her the next mom on the chopping block apparently. Crimson murders his wife and gets yaoi made of him despite the fact that he’s straight.

I too wish there was some semblance of a punk scene but everything gets labelled goth instead. Kindve a shame. And you’re right they don’t behave like birds at all, there’s no clever animal puns or character work being done. Swans peacocks parrots owls ravens? Why?

I wish Stella could be a character, while having her occasional moments of petty villainy and comedy. Stop trying to force a comic relief character to be this Uber serious abuser or whatever. Her story is just as sad as stolas in many ways and there’s no getting around it. The projection of amber heard hate onto her is so childish.

Persephone. The goddess of spring and agriculture, goddess and judge of the dead, and queen of hades.

For the longest time persephone was shunted back as a minor goddess. And when people talked about her, she was an innocent maiden who was kidnapped by the evil hades.

But nowadays the younger generation have been getting into the Greek myths and learning about the gatekeeping girlboss that is our pastel goth queen. This woman predates hades, was known as Dread Persephone, was widely feared as the goddess of the dead, and wore a flower crown while doing it. Persephone got me into greek mythology and like many other nerds, remains one of my favorites. So in honor of this increasingly popular goddess, I've compiled a list of my 5 favorite interpretations...

Lore Olympus *slight spoilers*

I first started really getting into Greek Mythology just maybe a year before finding out about this comic, so I didn't view it with as much of a critical eye as I do now. The early seasons don't portray Persephone as well but I understand that mythological accuracy has to take a back seat to character development. And I enjoy her character now after the hiatus. She's definitely grown and seems more respectable. Although, she hasn't quite earned her dread queen title yet. Her main appeal is 1) her devotion to Hades. When I got into greek mythos back in 2017? People still saw Perse as a damsel in distress who hated her husband, which isn't supported by mythology. She genuinely loves hades in LO and it's clear she would do anything for him, even putting him in his place sometimes. Also I love their banter. 2) I love her design. I'm not the biggest fan of pink but it really works for her, esp in season 2 when she wears more green. I like that her signature color is white but in the underworld she wears darker shades.

Punderworld

Alot of people (mostly lo antis) claim this to be the best version of the H+P myth and this is the greatest interpretation of our pegging queen. And I thought it was...okay. I do like like creator and her versions of hades, hestia hera, etc are amazing. I enjoy looking at her thought process and the inspiration for the gods designs. I love persephones spunky and flirty characterization. She seems like like rebellious teen while still having that charm and charisma you'd associate with with young goddess. It's alot of fun to read, her and apollos dynamic is my favorite. I love the flower crown and the different shapes it takes (horns, flowers, vines, etc.) Other than that I found her design slightly boring, but I'm picky when it comes to wardrobe. I'm hoping as punderworld goes on she gets more gothic and scary

Hadestown

I'm so sad that Amber Gray is leaving, her persephone was amazing. Alot of people portray Persephone as younger and more cutesy, but Hadestown went all in the other direction. I love the darker more mature vibe she has. With her attitude, husky voice (slight drinking problem) and Our Lady of The Underground, they definitely got a more chthonic appeal. I also love the costume. Personally I think her dress could use more decal but other than that I love it, and how just changing the color seamlessly goes from springy summertime to witchy goth. It's definitely a unique take on persephone that I hope becomes more mainstream.

Smite

I don't actually play smite but I've watched playthroughs and I've watched persephones trailer. I'm in love. I love that they gave her a more sinister edge. Purposefully eating the pomegranate and laughing maniacally. This definitely feels the the Persephone whom the mortals feared. And her design is quite possibly the best. The artists perfected the mix between springy pastel flowers and dark chthonic armor. My favorite Persephone design. 100 pomegranate seeds/10

Overly Sarcastic Productions

I debated on adding this as OSP is an educational channel so they don't stray far from what characterization is in the myths, but the way Red draws perse and how she interacts with other gods put this in my top tier. While simpler, I love the design. It's very unique and still keeps a pastel goth theme. Making her skintones pastel whilst putting her in a victorian gothic dress. Red often portrayed persephone as kinda a cutesy flower goddess with a black dress but lately she's been going in a more death queen vibe. Shes shown to be a very doting spouse and loving individual, who will absolutely mess you up. @ sisyphus

Overall, it's easy to botch up perse in my opinion. Some people make her too much of an innocent flower goddess *cough disney* and some people make her hateful and resentful of her husband *cough cough Percy Jackson movies cough* but these I believe are the best. Some honorable mentions include

superhero universe that started as a chemistry project when i was in high school where we had to like, anthropomorphize a certain element in order to learn about the periodic table, so of COURSE i made it gay and comics. includes the above magical girls and another group of supers in college, except these ones are more sciencey. main character is nicki walton (can change her flesh into a superdense metallic substance, kind of like how emma frost can become a diamond) and her co-supers valentina foster-nguyen (half alien, can shoot sparkle rays and stuff), basira baz/the all-seeing girl (psychic/teleporter), silver star (haven't decided on a name yet, he's basically ghost rider but a cowboy instead of a biker), and liz doe (ghost girl who is also a toxic slime girl, can become intangible like kitty pryde, started as a villain but turned good cause she fell in love with nicki). she has a whole rogues gallery but the main villain is adam huxley, nicki's old lab partner who tried to kill her but instead gave her superpowers.

juno and milos. started as a college project in my comics class and has never left. root of my dnd homebrew world. she's a hunter turned knight, he's a cursed prince, they're in love, she kills his dad, it's a whole thing. i am perpetually trying to write a graphic novel about it.

Rem is a death god that gives Misa the power to supernaturally serial kill people, falls in love with her, and murders additional people for her

For Edward Nygma and Oswald Cobblepot :

they ARE evil and they DO actually murder people together. and sometimes they try to kill each other. literally bonded over being murders when they first met. have done innumerable crimes since. gotham's worst on/off-couple.

The epitome of "the couple that kills together stays together" except that they are also often trying to kill each other. But that's just how love is sometimes. But yeah, Oswald confesses his love for Ed, except he also murdered Ed's girlfriend a little, then Ed tries to kill him, but then he hallucinates Oswald's ghost singing seductively to him because he's also definitely in love with him. They both do so much murder and they are both so in love with each other in such a messed up but ultimately devoted way; I genuinely think they are the most murderous and husbandly murder husbands out there. Plus they have all the delightful campy themed flair of Batman villains!

Goth x nerd couple except they're campy supervillains who like to spice their gay drama up with murder and they have soooo many issues. The spicing it up with murder includes both killing the other's partner out of jealousy and just trying to kill each other many MANY times. I wish the memory of this show was fresh enough in my mind to give you a breakdown of their relationship but alas. Anyway, these two are like the most iconic thing in this show for me, not only for their relationship but their personalities individually

I wish the collective tumblr imagination did for Eros and Psyche what it did for Hades and Persephone. I mean, a lot of that couple’s appeal is based on conjecture - little record of any cheating or dramas (my preferred reading of the Adonis myth notwithstanding), Persephone’s relatively equal status in the Underworld etc. The most concise myth that talks about their relationship is the Rape (or, well, abduction, whatever) of Persephone, which doesn’t talk that much about what Persephone did or felt (which admittedly lends it to reinterpretations explaining why she had such good relationship with her husband afterwards, but again, conjecture) and is less about either of them than it is about Demeter. She is the one who does the most in this story, and her feelings are centred. I understand that people love their “scary misunderstood goth x secretly terrifying flower girl” pairing, and there’s nothing wrong with that! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with conjecture! Greeks themselves didn’t have a set cannon of myths, so warping and reinterpreting these stories is definitely in keeping with their nature. It’s just that, well... You have to admit it’s just conjecture?

Meanwhile, there is nothing uncertain or up for interpretation about the relationship between Eros and Psyche. We know exactly how they met and fell in love, and... Well, I just like that story a lot? As a fan of fairytales, you can tell that a lot of fairytale tropes come from this story. You have the plucky girl who makes great sacrifices for her love and wins thanks to her perseverance and good heart (her arch is actually pretty typical of the “girl saves the boy” kind of fairytales, in that she doesn’t fight threats physically, but by magic or relying on people and animals she helped). You have a mysterious lover whose face she must not under any circumstances see. You have the evil stepmother/mother-in-law archetype who is jealous of the heroine’s beauty... Admittedly, Aphrodite is more justified in her actions than most, considering her idiot son was supposed to punish this girl for being worshipped as the actual goddess of love and beauty, and instead he not only saves her, but gets himself hurt because of her. Which, did I mention how great this story is, because it’s really fucking great. The heroine also has agency, like, right there in the text, but also as in any good fairytale, there is enough space for little tweaks and additions that could make characters a bit deeper. I love this story so much and I wish I wasn’t alone in this.

I’ve already made my peace with the fact that Hades and Persephone are more popular. I am not even mad at that anymore; I’ve long since came to understand that the real problem is “my story is underrated” and not “this other story is popular, which my story isn’t and that’s bad and fault of the other story”. But please, I am begging you. Read on Eros and Psyche. You may not love it as much as I do, in fact you may not like it at all, but at least give it a chance.

2022 roundup

Watched less tv this year than probably any other year in my life because I was mostly pregnant and queasy beyond belief, but here’s a roundup of the stuff I did manage to cram. Not only kdramas, though mostly that. (I’m probably forgetting some but these are all that come to mind rn.)

The Red Sleeve: Didn’t actually finish this because of the pain, but it was so well-made. Ambitious cinematography, great storytelling and acting. Lee Se-young really gave us the range; having only seen her poised and regal in The Crowned Clown before, I loved watching her goof off in between the angsty bits. A serve.

Hyena: I normally dislike law dramas, but the leads are so mesmerizing (and so attractive) that you root for them even when they do objectively evil work. Have never seen such palpable yearning between two characters. Jung Geum-ja is the Most.

Into the Ring: Goo Se-ra my beloved! I want more romances like this: haggard social worker and the social justice gremlin whose daily complaints he has to resolve. Enjoyed every second.

Rewatch of Kingdom and Ashin of the North: Just as brilliant as the first time around. Come on Netflix, now that HBO Max is collapsing in on itself, get with that blood and gore and get to work on season 3 already. I want to see Ashin go apeshit!!

Jodhaa Akbar: Seven months later and I still get tingly thinking about this romance. Akbar dueling Jodhaa to win her back, and showering her with jasmine petals mid-fight. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai both looking so hot it should be illegal. A soundtrack to make the sun rise even in the bleak midwinter. This was my first visit to Mughal India but not my last! (Thank you @rain-hat for the recs, you are a gift to tumblrkind!)

My Liberation Notes: Okay I was so into the first half that I cannot even tell you. It burrowed into the darkest, weariest part of me and lit a match. But I did not care for Mr. Gu’s backstory and the ensuing foray into the criminal underworld, and somewhere around there it lost its heart.

Love Between Fairy and Devil: Jam packed with tropes. A surprisingly touching and very entertaining fantasy for the Hades/Persephone girlies. Great visuals, too!

Alchemy of Souls: Speaking of great visuals! I will admit that I hop skipped my way through much of part 1. The world-building is claustrophobically boring, which is a shame because it is so charmingly costumed. I adore the premise of a villain body-swapping into a nobody. There is some good acting in this and there is also some very bad acting. I am upset with part 2 for filing the fangs off my darling Naksu, but I do admit that the dark fairytale vibe has got me hooked. (Evil mothers sewing golden thread into the bare skin of their daughters! Our hero tormented by the furies of hell! A marriage of convenience to the resident goth! I am eating it up by the spoonful.)

Stranger Things: I feel like I am in the minority here so this is probably on me, but I thought this was the least scary and also least emotionally engaging season. I think the problem horror-wise was Vecna and that they showed him too soon and too often in his campy monster makeup. All the Russia stuff was boring af, and I didn’t like that the kids were separated all season. Eddie was however a most delightful addition to the gang. Rest in power, babygirl.

First Love/Hatsukoi: I hate amnesia plots, and I don’t understand why the characters deal with it the way they do here, or why it is never resolved or even treated as something in need of resolving. However, the leads are delightful together and their chemistry is out of this world. Would happily have watched many, many more episodes of this. (I ragged on the color-coded families to my husband, before we realized we both wore the exact same shade of burgundy. So now I’ve decided that it’s cute and not weird at all.)

Things I didn’t finish, but might pick back up some day:

Business Proposal: Chaebol heirs are such a turn off that I couldn’t even finish it for my girls.

Bloody Heart: I only saw a few episodes of this because it was so difficult to find a good stream anywhere online. Goddamn Mouse gatekeeping Jang Hyuk from me!!

ik they arent even in the trailer and their story is done but im kinda bummed out thatin the good omens tag basically nobody is ever talking about the them or the human characters anymore like they make up most of the book and half the show but always get the side lines in fandom content :/ like ive never seen an anathema focused piece of anything shes always like crowleys bestie or something nobody cares to explore a female character deeper than is shown in canon like raphael doesnt exist in canon and yet had more people explore his intricacies

I’m guilty of this too, and I think aside from regular fandom tendency to focus on a ship and let that be all that matters, A/C’s story is so interesting and unique that it outshines the others.

But I love Anathema! I really like her storyline of following something for her whole life because she was told she has to, and having to navigate not having that guide anymore—after choosing not to have it. I wish we got to see how she deals with going about life without knowing what comes next, I can see it being a great source of stress for her. And it would’ve been neat to see it paralleled with Aziraphale going through something very similar, now that he’s abandoned his trust in Heaven. I saw a post a while ago talking about how both human couples were mirrors of A/C—Newt asks questions of Anathema’s unwavering faith and helps her to leave it behind, just like Crowley does for Aziraphale. Shadwell ends up with somebody he’s supposed to believe is an embodiment of evil and sees he was wrong about her, just like Aziraphale does with Crowley. That was really interesting to see and I have a feeling that season 2 will do the same thing with Maggie and Nina (of course I hope they’re more than just mirrors of the male characters).

But as far as fandom goes, I have to admit that I understand wanting to focus on A/C since they’re the most interesting. It does annoy me though, that Anathema often falls victim to the typical fandom treatment of female characters, where they only exist to mother the male characters. In fan fiction she tends to be the voice of reason and the “smartest one in the room”, which seems great because yay a woman is smarter than the men…until you realise she’s only “the smartest one in the room” because people can’t imagine a woman being silly and fun, only responsible and maternal. I think so much more could be done to explore her whole conspiracy theory thing.

As far as the trend of her being Crowley’s bestie, I think it’s cute, but it feels like people reduce her to being a “goth bestie” and don’t really pay attention to her interests. I feel like she’d really get along with Aziraphale and they’d bond over interest in/knowledge of books of prophecy. I’m sure Aziraphale would be absolutely fascinated to hear from an actual descendant of Agnes Nutter, and despite having left the descendant lifestyle behind I’m sure Anathema would be eager to share her history with somebody who’s knowledgeable and interested. Like imagine you dedicate your whole life to following in the footsteps of a historical figure that not many people know about except prophecy enthusiasts. And then you meet the enthusiast of all time. That would be exciting!

And, y’know, I’m sure she’d be more fond of Aziraphale over Crowley, considering A’s the one who healed her and treated her kindly while C didn’t care that he’d hit her with his car and instead focused on un-denting said car…

That being said, I’ve found that a lot of content with her being friends with the husbands, especially Crowley, ends up treating her like set dressing. I’d make a feminist analysis of this, but tbh I notice it with all the human characters, so I don’t think it’s specific to Anathema because she’s female. It’s possible it happens to her more though because of it.

Anyways. I agree it’s sad that the other characters don’t get much attention! They’re great, especially Anathema and Pepper who are my favourites. But like I said, I get it, when they’re up against the competition that is ineffable husbands.
