Brooooo a part three AND with Papyruses?! They deserve more love and I shall give it to them✨ (Warning: A little spicy up ahead!)
How Touchy Can They Be In Public With Slightly Large Chested S/o! (Pt.3 with Papyruses✨)
Stretch:
* Ah yes the lazy carrot himself. With his chill nature could he be too lazy to think lewd things?! Well of course he can- he’s the type of…..closeted pervert? Like he is not gonna outright do anything or say anything unless it’s on the down low- other than that, he might be generally too lazy to do it…..or a little shy surprisingly.
* You probably randomly find out when you wore a nice tight shirt. With a whole amount of cleavage that leaves nothing much for the imagination- and he is staring respectfully…..a lot. If you catch him, he’ll just chuckle and shrug like yeah yah got me. Though he does get a little sheepish and looks away blushing.
* In private, he’s actually quite a big snuggle bug. He don’t care if he’s the big or little spoon. Heh mainly because he could either have your tits on his back as the little spoon or tits in his hands like stress balls as the big spoon. Plus he gets cuddles and possible smooches? He’s in heaven✨
* Now does he tease you in public? Ooooh boy. He’ll tease you via puns- seriously he’ll probably make you smack him or laugh. Maybe both- “Hey babe. Am I the breast guy you ever loved?✨” “Babe please-“ “Woah Calm your tits- I just found a cup for us *Shows coffee cup with a honey bee on it* Damn sorry It’s a b-cup-“ “BABE-“
* He’s just a silly guy who loves you very much……and no he’s not going to run out of boob jokes-
Mutt:
* Now NORMALLY I ask if this AU variant is capable of being lewd. But- this guy is so GODdamn HORNY, he broke that continuity in these headcanons- don’t get me wrong! He has his cute moments. But nah we don’t need to even ASK if he does bruh-
* And I highly doubt you take him to public without wearing a baggy sweatshirt- because I know the first time you tried wearing Y’know something regular that shows your outline, he was clinging onto you. Either face nuzzling your chest, or pulling you close by your waist, your chest directly pressed against him. Hell will the sweatshirt REALLY help-?
* In private he’s more like a cute cuddly puppy, snuggling you and asking for headpats. He even whines like one and if you don’t he has the cutest puppy dog eyes. And honestly it’s quite a sweet moment. He’s also the type of guy who requires a lot of trust so to see him unwind and be this affectionate is really rewarding. Though let’s be honest he can turn this from sweet fluffy moment to having you two break the headboard after having fun in the sheets~ If you in the mood? Oh he’ll take you there-
* Teasing? Absolutely. And very blunt teasing too- like from tell you how pretty you’d look with love bites all around……to straight up GRIPPING a booba with no hesitation- mans gives no fucks- might have to drag him to somewhere private before he does something right then and there. But he’ll apologize right after! “Sorry babe….I just can’t resist you. I love you so much!” ……you can’t stay mad at him can you? 😏
* Overall he really is your cute puppy dog✨
Papyrus (The Classic✨in case there is confusion-):
* Well……I’ll be damned. He actually had me stumped- but ok ok. Can this literal ball of sunshine be anyway lewd? My answer? I’d say……surprisingly yes? But very very vanilla- like he’s a grown ass Skellie, of course he’d be attracted. But it’s so damn innocent and sweet.
* Seriously in public he can’t help but smile and compliment you because he thinks you are the most beautiful person he’s ever seen- he tries not to get easily flustered because he’s The Great Papyrus! He’s supposed to make YOU feel flattered! Though the way he stares at your booba and looks away apologizing profusely, I think you feel flattered already.
* In private, nothing is better than cuddling with your S/o after training all day. But please let him know it’s ok to lay on your chest. He always hesitates. But once he gets comfortable, he’ll be a cuddly bean, skull resting upon your booba✨ he even gets curious, wondering why they are JUST like pillows! He also gets surprisingly romantic and leaves praises and kisses all over you, saying all the bits he loves about you. If he ain’t careful, things will take a steamy turn with you two~
* A lovely cinnamon roll who is always ready to shower you in love! And we can all agree: very adorable✨

okay so i have,,, a lot of questions for siegfried and his kids. not exactly from the list (and more like ICAs) but i just have to annoy my uncles.
for everyone:
what's your favourite colour? do you like walking barefoot or have you ever walked barefoot? would you take me to the park and have ice cream with me? btw, favourite ice cream flavour?
for siegfried:
how did you even survive being shot three times in the same place? like, HOW??? why swords? also yeah, you spent too much time in scotland, you could literally call yourself a scot. buy me a sword, i need one.
for wolfgang:
do you know what's a furry? how many dogs do you currently have and could i have one? ily you are very cool, keep doing u.
for markov (the fav uncle):
not a question but i want you to teach me how to stab people and cause non-lethal injury. when the fuck did you get married and why wasn't i a flower girl? please sign your cards.
Favourite colour: These are not going to be ICA, because Markov would lie and Siegfried wouldn't know the truth if it hit him in the head.
Siegfried could never pick just one, he liked combinations of earthy browns and light greens. If he had to pick one, he'd say maroon, and then mull it over until the end of his days if it was the right answer.
Wolfgang wears what he loves: Scarlet
Markov might wear his signature purple, but is actually fond of dark greens, emerald and malachite like
Ice cream:
Siegfried: Have you gone through your training today? Well, once you are finished, we can get ice cream as a reward. Strawberry is a good ice cream.
Wolfgang: Well, the dogs aren't going to walk themselves and I suppose we can stop by the ice-cream stall on the way. If it's omen. And if you promise not to make a mess. Scoop of pistachio?
Markov: Consider this counterpoint: Actual food. But we can spend the afternoon in the park and you may get ice cream on your own. If they have dark enough chocolate flavour, I might consider having one scoop too...
About the three shots:
Siegfried: It's not like a shot to the shoulder is lethal, especially if you keep your mind and stop the bleeding. I myself am more puzzled how three different people separated by some thirty years managed to hit me in the exact same spot.
Swords:
Siegfried: Fencing, either the fancy sport one or the historical one, make for a good sport. I picked it up first as PE and then stuck to it, because I liked it. Many people nowadays like to do martial arts, because in case of toruble they could also defend themselves, swordsmanship has the same benefit. It also has one additional advantage: People are intimidated by large visible weapons. If someone sees a sword strapped to your side, they aren't even going to start a fight. You can call that preventive damage control.
Siegfried: Besides it is a known fact that everyone looks better with a sword, it just has some people-magnetic properties. But if you carry a sword and don't know how to use it, you are more likely to hurt yourself or worse - make a fool of yourself.
Siegfried: Why would I buy you a sword? Go to the armory, pick one that you like. Something to match your height and strength.
The furry question:
Wolfgang: You aren't the first person to ask me that. According to Markov, who's a fountain of such useless trivia, furry is me but neon green with orange streaks. I hope that answers helps you, because it did not help me at all.
Dogs:
Wolfgang: So right now we are at sixteen. 6 are actually our dogs, these five puppies are for sale or taking if you promise to take good care of them. Yes, you'll get the papers, this is a certified breeding station.
Wolfgang:These three I am sort of looking after until their owners sort out their living conditions - it's not easy to do software and divorce and find a place big enough to live in with a borzoi.
Wolfgang: And these two poor sods got into an accident and the shelter couldn't really provide for them. Together they make for a whole dog and some spare parts. If you wanted to, you could take them, but they are high maintenance.
Being very cool:
Wolfgang: I am so cool it's frosty, lass. *winks with both eyes*
Stabbing people:
Markov: *hands you an anatomy atlas* Make a list of all spots that are lethal to stab, then I shall add in any of those you'll have missed. After that? Stab anywhere but there.
Marriage:
Markov: That is a private information. Nobody was invited, you get equal treatment to everyone else.
Markov: It's not like you've missed out anything. We signed some papers, then everyone went home.
Signing cards:
Markov: Why would I? Everyone knows they are from me. If someone does not know that, they either bother to find out or they do not.

Where to buy the best pet accessories online in India
Pet Dog and Cat Accessories Store: Online Scenario in India
E-commerce websites gained market share in the pet supply industry due to people being restricted in their time outside their homes. Internet sales in pet supply grew steadily in recent years, but the pandemic significantly accelerated this trend.
Tumblr media
Online Pet stores: Pros & Cons Pros being the authorities of the online store are offering you accurate details regarding the products available there. There are high chances that you are going to get offers along with impressive discounts. Buyers are offered numerous products and accessories for their pets; you are eligible to get different toys and mats that can help them learn and enjoy.
Cons are that purchasing packed goods in several layers of plastic and cardboard packaging and delivered right to your front door is good for you but not so great for the environment. If you're shopping online, there's a larger risk of fraud: credit card scams, phishing, hacking, identity theft, counterfeit products, bogus websites, and other scams are common.
Best Pet Dog and Cat Accessories Stores in India
Following are the pet stores where you can find the finest toys and buy pet dog and cat accessories online:

Must Haves!
For Dogs
Being a pet parent, caring for a puppy is as good as caring for children and it must not be taken lightly. Therefore, we have made a list of dog accessories that you must procure before becoming a proud owner of an adorable dog.
1. Leash
It’s an important training and safety accessory for your new puppy. When taking a puppy out of the house, a leash ensures that he will not accidentally run away.
2. Food and Water Bowls
It’s better to have bowls made of ceramic or stainless steel, because your puppy can’t chew these.
Make sure that these bowls are of appropriate size because bowls that are too large will make it difficult for your  puppy to eat the food.
3. Dog Bed
A dog bed ensures that your beloved puppy has a comfortable place to sleep and relax in. The relaxation helps them to get charged up and ready for the fun!

4. Treats
Treats are useful for training your puppy. Dogs are always eager to receive treats for their good behavior and for performing things that make their owner happy.
5. Chew Toys
Chew toys are a necessity for your puppy, as they love to chew on things and tend to chew on anything that helps them relieve the itching caused by teething.
For Cats
Litter Tray
This litter tray literally cleans itself.
It works by sensing your cat's movement into the tray, and then leaving the litter tray. Once your cat has finished, the device runs a plough-like comb through the litter and collects any clumped waste into a sealed container at the end of the tray. It keeps the waste neatly locked away to reduce any odour wafting.
Because cats are very clean creatures, they will love having a clean litter tray straight away, without having to wait until you're home to clean it up.
A Water Fountain
I am a huge fan of water fountains. They keep your cat's water supply fresh and filtered, which is very handy for when you're not at home for a period of time. Plus, cats love them, due to their instinct to drink running water, as it's less likely to be stagnant and contaminated. This means they'll drink more water and keep themselves hydrated.
Water fountains are available in a huge array of styles and colours to suit any interior style. I like this one because it comes with five heads that spout water differently, allowing variety each day for your fussy kitty friend. (Nothing says pampered kitty like a fresh variety of filtered water from their own personal fountain!)
Smartcat Cat Climber
Cat furniture is a wonderful addition to any home (...says the crazy cat lady!). But in all seriousness, cat trees are great because they extend your cat's territory vertically and allow them a high-up vantage point from which to survey their kingdom.
This cat tree in particular is interesting as it hooks onto any door, which means it doesn't take up any floor space. It also has scratchable surfaces to keep your cat's claws off the furniture or carpet.

Miss American Pie
Chapter Three: Bye Bye
Warning: This series features a romantic Yelena Belova x Fem!Reader relationship.
Summary: After freeing the widows from chemical subjugation and destroying the red room, you and Yelena finally settle down.
Part 1 & Part 2
Tumblr media
The widows welcome you, the ones you trained with and the ones you didn’t. After Dreykov was gone and you had nothing but time. Melina and Alexei go to work on replicating the antidote. Creating enough to free all chemically subjugated agents.
It’ll take time. But the more you free the more are willing to help. Some of the widows just leave once they are given freedom. Ready to wash their hands of all of this and start living. You understand that more than anything. Eventually the operation is running on such a large scale they hardly need you at all.
Natasha hasn’t reached out since you separated after the red room. Probably off with the Avengers trying to save the world again. No one blames her, for her inability to be still. Not even Yelena.
“So,” you plop down on the couch beside Yelena. “What’s the plan now?”
“I don’t know.” She admits, staring up at the ceiling. “To be honest, I didn’t think I was going to make it this far.”
“Yeah.” You tug at a loose strand of her dirty blonde hair. “That makes two of us.”
“We could pretend to be normal.” Yelena offers. “What would a normal person do?”
“Don’t know,” you shrug. “I’ve never been one.”
“Maybe...settle down.” Yelena’s eyes are far away.
“Would you have wanted to-“ You break off, trying to sort out the words. “I mean if you could…would you have a baby?”
She raises her brows, “I never thought about it.” A long pause. “I wouldn’t know how to be a mother.”
Neither would you. You’ll never be right. Whatever that is, was, or might have been. Always a little too guarded and rough around the edges. “You never waste time thinking about things you can’t have.” You sink farther into the cushions, her pinky skates over your own. Taking the invitation you twine your fingers together.
“I thought about you.” She lowers her eyes to the coffee table. “Everyday. Until I couldn’t anymore.”
“I-“
“The red room took that from me too.”
You shake your head at her. “They can never take anything from you or anyone else ever again,” you whisper. “And to be clear you can have me.”
A laugh rumbles out of her chest at the news. “I can?”
“I mean if you still want me.” You tease, “I know that the chase is half the fun for you. So I can keep on running. I’m one foot out the door-“
“I am tired of running.” Yelena murmurs, curling up against your side.
“Me too.” Your chin rests atop her head.
“Then stop doing it!” She scolds, slapping your arm playfully in retaliation.
“I will if you will.” You know why she runs. The same reason you do. Because you’re afraid. That maybe some parts of you are too broken to love.
She mulls it over for a moment. “Truce. I don’t run. You don’t run.”
“Deal.” You give her fingers a squeeze.
“Except into the face of danger.” She clarifies, only half kidding. “Then we run, straight ahead.” Yelena motions with her free hand. “But together.”
“Together.” You agree, with a soft smile.
“We could get a dog.” The tone of her voice tells you that she is invested in the idea.
“I wouldn’t mind a dog.” You prop your feet up on the coffee table.
Yelena hates anything but a straight answer. Still feeling the need to convince you, she presents the facts. “Dogs are really cool! They have special powers.”
You chuckle, “dogs do not have powers.”
“Yes!” Yelena argues, “they can predict natural disasters and judge character.”
“That’s a special power?” You quip, “I can do that too.”
She grumbles under her breath.
“I want one.” You sigh. Feeling all the tension leave her body.
“I knew you did.” She smiles, contently.
———————————————————————
Dogs might have powers, but the only thing your puppy currently seems to posses is the ability to chew up anything in her path.
“Yelena have you seen my-“ you pause, taking in the scene before you, “shoes.”
“Don’t be angry,” Yelena holds up a hand.
The tiny puppy beside her squeaks, not quite a bark yet. Your demolished sneaker tumbling to the ground.
“What happened?” You run both hands over your face.
She sweeps the dog into her arms. “I told Fanny we could go for a walk once you got out of the shower. She was excited, Y/N! She was trying to bring your shoes to you. But she got distracted, only a little.”
“A little?” You can’t help but smile.
“Look at this face,” Yelena waves Fanny’s paw at you. “You can’t be mad at this face. Tell her girl. Say, you can’t be mad at me Mom, I’m trying my best.” She brings the dog closer.
You raise a hand to pet Fanny lightly. Yelena’s right of course, there is no being mad at that face. “Let me find a pair of shoes that isn’t mangled. Then we’ll go for a walk.”
“I’ll wait with Fanny.”
“Of course you will.” You retreat to your bedroom. Rummaging through the closet in search of some sort of footwear. You’d settle for slippers at this point. Fanny joins you after a moment. Nuzzling at your ankle as she whines.
It’s not everyday that she follows you, she is Yelena’s dog and never lets you forget it. “You’re really excited aren’t you?” More whining. You scoop Fanny up. “I’m coming, I’m coming.”
You huff, finally locating a pair of sandals. Slipping them on quickly so you can return to Yelena and gloat about being Fanny’s favorite. “Hey baby, I don’t know what you did, but look.” You smile, gazing up as you present the dog…to an empty room. That’s odd. Maybe she’s waiting outside.
You grab the leash Yelena abandoned on the countertop, securing it to Fanny’s collar. “Come on girl. Let’s go find Mama. Where’s Mama?”
Fanny follows you out the door, onto the walkway.
“Yelena?”
Nothing.
You scan the area, no sign of her. “Ok…” Back into the house, you check the bathroom next.
“Yelena!” You shout, knowing you’ll feel stupid once she replies. But she doesn’t.
A buzzing from the cell phone in your back pocket draws your attention. You set Fanny down gently, accepting the call and moving the device up to your ear. “Alexei?”
“Y/N! Oh thank god!” His voice booms through the speaker.
“Are you ok?” You ask immediately. Leaning down to grab the television remote, turning to channel thirteen, still broadcasting it’s usual gameshow.
“I am alone.” He cries through the speaker. “Melina left me with her pigs.”
“What do you mean she left you?” Something is very wrong.
“She disappeared.” He says somberly, “didn’t even say goodbye. I don’t know what I did to deserve this.” The dramatic monologue continues. “I give her back rub every night and then-“
“No,” you cut him off. “Absolutely not.” Under no circumstance is he going to tell you what happens next.
“I have made mistakes, but this! This is cruel.” Alexei, clearly distraught begins cursing in Russian.
“Alexei, I know you’re upset but I need you to listen.”
“What?” He asks. “What is it?”
“Yelena is gone too.” You inform him. Your eyes flicker over the words at the bottom of your tv screen. “People disappeared all over the world.”
You fall back onto the couch, feeling all the air leave your lungs.
More hysteria on the other end of the line. “What are we going to do?”
“I’m gonna find Natasha. Maybe she knows something.” Assuming that Natasha is still here.
“What about me?”
“Come to Ohio. You can dog sit.” You offer, familiar numbness seeps into your limbs.
“I have nine pigs!” Alexei shouts back.
“We have a backyard, don’t worry.” You hang up before he has a chance to argue.
You return to the call screen. Scrolling to find a different contact. Pressing the dial button beside her name.
It rings. And rings. And rings. “Hello.”
“Natasha,” you let out the breath you’ve been holding. “What the hell happened?”
——————————————————————
The Avengers fortress isn’t exactly how you imagined. Not very homey.
You park your car in the lot. Removing your keys from the ignition and stowing them in your back pocket. The clear rectangular keychain with a picture of you and Yelena inside sticks out. Clinking when you round the vehicle to retrieve Fanny from the passenger seat. “Come on, Fanny.”
She wags her tail, waiting expectantly to be carried.
“You’re spoiled, you know.” You sigh, taking the puppy into your arms and closing the door behind you.
The front gate is open but Natasha takes a moment to locate. She cut her hair up to her shoulders, dyed it blonde. “Hello stranger.”
“You got a dog.” She says, in greeting.
“Yeah.” You reply, not in the mood for small talk. “It was Yelena’s idea.”
“I knew she’d sucker you into that.”
“It’s not like she could make me do anything I didn’t want to.” Your finger slides along the edge of the metal table Natasha’s seated behind.
She barks a laugh, “that’s a lie.”
Maybe so. “Nice place you’ve got here.”
“It’s not mine.”
“Still cool. I like the hair too,” you motion toward her blonde locks.
“That’s not really mine either, is it?” She remarks.
“Is anything ever really ours?”
“No.” She frowns. “I guess not.”
“What happened?” You ask again.
“It’s a long story,” Nat crosses both arms over her chest. “You might want to take a seat.”
You clear your throat, pulling out the chair beside her. Fanny curls up in your lap, curious eyes darting about every now and then. You tell yourself it’s because she’s in a new place, but part of you knows, she’s looking for Yelena.
Natasha stares down at her hands. “Have you ever heard of infinity stones?”
You shake your head. “Must be an avenger thing.”
“There were six of them, scattered all over the galaxy. If a person has all six they can use them in anyway they choose. Thanos, used them to eliminate half of all living creatures.”
“Are you the only one left?” You lean in.
“No.” She sniffs, blinking away tears. “There’s others.”
“So where are they?” The place looks abandoned. “Why aren’t you charging into battle?”
“Because we lost. Probably the worst we’ve ever lost.” Natasha clenches her jaw. “By the time we found Thanos again he already destroyed the stones.”
“We’ll try again.” You decide immediately. This isn’t over.
“Will we?” Natasha shakes her head with a smirk.
“If she was gone for good I would know it.” You tell her truthfully. “I would feel it, in my heart and I don’t.”
“You didn’t see it happen. I saw him snap his fingers and-“
You lay your hand over hers, squeezing tight.
“Did you see her go?” She asks, voice just above a whisper. “Yelena. Did you see her?”
“No.” You confess, “I didn’t see.”
Natasha closes her eyes. “That’s why you still have hope.”
“Look maybe you’re right.” You shrug, “even so, now seems like a really stupid time to give up.”
The corner of her mouth twitches. “What’s the dog’s name?”
“Fanny.” You inform her.
“Come on.” She rolls her blue eyes. “You’re kidding right? Tell me you didn’t actually name a dog after one of those stupid aliases Rick made me.”
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
“I guess a dog’s better than a pig.” Natasha reasons. “Are they still here?”
“Not Melina.” You break the news quickly. Like tearing off a bandage. “But Alexei and all nine of her pigs are on their way to our house in Ohio.”
“Sounds crowded.”
“Always room for one more.”
——————————————————————
You stay like that for a long time. Hopeful. Sure that this was all some nightmare that you could wake up from; fight your way out of.
And then five years passed.
Now you come to see Natasha twice a month, just to check in. Alexei and his pigs have taken up permanent residency in the home you bought with Yelena. As for you, you bounce around. Never staying in one place too long.
“Any news?” You wonder, leaning against the doorframe of Natasha’s meeting room.
“No.” She bites out. Kicking her foot up on the desk. “You should move on.”
“Is that what you call this?” You flick your wrist in her direction. “Crying into a peanut butter sandwich.”
“It’s therapeutic.” She waves the bread at you. Tears welled up in her eyes. “You should try it sometime.”
“Nah.” You take a seat, reaching across to make a sandwich of your own. “It’s not the sandwich’s fault.”
“Am I interrupting the pity party?” Steve says, announcing his presence. Captain America is as self righteous as ever.
“Didn’t you grieve for a century over a girl you kissed one time?” You arch a brow at him, licking wayward peanut butter from the pad of your thumb. “Five years is just a drop in the bucket.”
Steve purses his lips, you have a point. “It wasn’t a century.”
“Close enough.” You mumble around a mouthful of your dinner.
“Want a bite?” Natasha offers half of her sandwich to him.
“No thanks.” He takes a step closer. “I’d offer to make you a real dinner, but already look pretty miserable. Where’s your dog?”
“Visiting her granddad.” Everyone and their mother loves that damn dog.
“Oh yeah, my great adversary.” How could he ever forget. “Is he still wearing that stupid suit?”
“I’m pretty sure the suits are stowed away. But it’s been a while since I’ve been there.” Your mind wanders to the vest. The one Natasha returned to you after Yelena was gone. The one you retired because it doesn’t smell like her anymore. Nothing does.
Most things remain untouched in the Ohio house. Your pictures. Your memories. Your plans. You can’t get rid of them. Can’t stomach being around them either.
Someone, a man, alerts the security cameras, pounding on the front door. “Hello? Is anyone home? Hello! Can you hear me?”
“How old is this video?” Steve asks, cocking his head to the side.
“It’s the front gate.” Natasha breathes, enlarging the image.
“Do we know him?” You squint at the man in question.
“It’s me, Scott Lang, Antman. I met you guys at the airport in Germany a few years ago. I had a mask on, you probably wouldn’t recognize me.” He rambles on.
Natasha presses the access panel, opening the gate.
You straighten yourselves out, before he makes it down the long hallway into the common room.
Scott paces, a lot. Nervously rubbing his hands together.
“Scott.” Steve finally cut in. “Are you ok?”
“Have any of you ever studied quantum physics?”
“Only to make conversation.” Nat says, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Ok. Alright so, five years ago. Right before Thanos. I was in the quantum realm. The quantum realm is like it’s own little microscopic universe. To get in there you have to be incredibly small. Hope, she’s my uh-“ he trails off. “She was my…she was- she was supposed to pull me out. And then Thanos happened and I got stuck in there.”
“I’m sorry that must have been a long five years.” Natasha apologies.
“That’s the thing, for me it wasn’t.” Scott replies. “It was five hours.”
“What a trip.” You snort, absently toying with your belt loop.
“The rules of time are different there. See everything is unpredictable.” He explains, getting distracted by the food in your hand. “Are you gonna finish that?”
“I guess not.” You hold it out to him.
He accepts, gratefully stuffing the bread into his mouth.
“Scott! What are you talking about?” Steve demands.
“So what I’m saying is time works differently in the quantum realm. The only problem is we don’t have a way to navigate it. But if we did, if we could somehow control the chaos; to enter the quantum realm at a certain point in time and exit at another point in time…like,” Scott locks eyes with you then. “Like before Thanos.”
You nod.
“Are you talking about a time machine?” Steve sighs, running a hand over his tense forehead.
“No. No of course not. Not like a time machine but like a…yeah.” There’s no other word for it. “Like a time machine. I know it’s crazy. But I can’t stop thinking about it! There gotta be some way.”
“Scott,” Natasha calls his attention. “I get emails from a raccoon. So nothing sounds crazy to me anymore.”
“So who do we talk to about this?” His eyes flicker between the three of you.
“Don’t look at me.” You hold both hands up. “That’s way above my pay grade.”

Can we have some head canons from Wish Me Away? Baby!Marinette sounds absolutely adorable!
Of course!
• The first person to find Marinette is Titus and at first Tikki and Plagg freak out but baby Marinette is all smiles and just happily rushes over to the "chiot (puppy)" as she keeps repeating
• Titus looks at this tiny human and just is like, ah yes she is tiny family. Must bring to Damian. Which he does by picking her up by the back of her onsie gently and taking her to down to the Batcave where he knows the family and Damian is.
• Tikki and Plagg of course go along after insuring that the Miracle Box is hidden somewhere safe and that Marinette is in no actual danger with the giant dog.
• Damian just hears Titus's footsteps and turns around to greet his dog but freezes when he sees the tiny infant in his dogs jaw. He literally doesn't know how to react other than to stare until finally he punches his father on the arm and angrily point at Marinette. "Father! Another? I thought I was the last one!"
• Bruce turns at that and is just as, if not more, confused as he take in the sight of the baby that is being put down by Titus. She stares at all of them just staring at her and starts to whine and tries to hide behind the large dog. "I'm fairly certain she's not mine. More importantly where did Titus get her from?"
• Dick is the one to swing into action and approach the small girl, he makes sure to sit down to reduce his height hoping it'll make him less intimidating before he introduces himself. "Hello, I'm Dick, who are you?"
Marinette gave him a big smile and waved, "Hi, Hi, Hi, Hi, Bonjour!"
Or well Dick thinks she said Bonjour, it was a little baby-fied, but he gave her a smile and waved in return.
• Jason is just staring at the small child, but he is trying to be as discreet as possible as he puts his gun back in it's holster.
• Tim is out of his seat as well and sitting on the ground too as he looks at her, "black hair, blue eyes, and a note attached to her shirt that translates to 'They wished me away, Here I am safe'. I don't know Bruce, seems right up your alley." He mumbles with a raised brow and small smirk.
• Now it was Damian's turn to come and sit, he took the note off the girl fast but he tried to be gentle about it. He read and just looks at his father like he is actually absolutely done with him. "Did you seduce some French woman we didn't know about? Father what about the Kyle woman? This child can't be more than a year old."
• At this point Jason can't hold it in anymore and just absolutely loses it and starts laughing, Marinette doesn't know what's going on but she hears laughing and she starts laughing to. Alfred hears commotion going on and goes down to the Batcave with sandwiches and sees this little girl laughing along with Jason and just sighs and looks over at Bruce and shakes his head. "Oh Master Bruce, not again."
• Jason loses it again, and Dick and Tim have joined him, which makes Marinette laugh even harder and Damian even gives a small smirk.
• Once they calm down Marinette gets up and walks over to Alfred who looks down and greets her. All she does is give him a smile and points to her heart then his and says "Paon." Everyone is confused as to why this small child just called Alfred a peacock and the the floating things came out and chaos erupted.
• the Kwami, as that's what they said they were explained everything that happened to the small child and what the were and who she was, there was another long discussion on what was to be done. It wasn't really hard for Bruce to decide he would adopt her but he was rather upset that she was supposedly the Guardian of these gods and the magical jewelry they were bound to and there was nothing he could do about that. Also the fact she did remember her past life so that may make things a bit difficult if not interesting.
• There was also the fact they would need to give her a new identity, Bruce explained it to everyone and everyone wanted to help pick a name for her. Marietta Martha Méh-fùnh Fu-Wayne. The boys had all wanted their picked names in there but Bruce vetoed that very fast as well as the last names because Marietta's name would have been 20 names long already.
• It was work but they were all getting used to having little Mari around along with the little gods that floated around with her. Alfred had quickly made up a room for her and he asked what color she liked and it was no surprise when she yelled out an excited "Pink!"
• It was also hard to adjust to having a baby around especially when they went out to do their vigilante business. It was especially a big surprise when a little bundle of red and black polka-dots knocked Batman out of the sky when he was using his grappling hook with a loud "Dad-dee!"
• There is now a swear jar in the manor after the F Word incident that occurred with Jason and Mari.
• Gotham is in LOVE with little Marietta when Bruce introduces her at a gala. She even meets Jagged again and she melts his heart when she gets excited to see him and goes "Uncle Jagged! Rock an Roll!" And Jagged is just like "Hell yeah I'm your uncle. Penny did you hear that? I'm her uncle!"
• The Justice League all make jokes and just genuinely laugh about the whole thing until they meet her and then Diana bows to the child and calls her Little Goddess and then confusion sets in.
• So many kwami shenanigans because Mari takes them out to play with them and they are DELIGHTED
• Damian is a little jealous of Mari in the beginning but then he catches her trying to copy him when he's training and he can't help but smile at her and help her, then he takes her to the library to draw and that's how they bond, that and with the animals.
• Dick likes to teach her gymnastics. He likes to hear her laugh when he straps her on to him so he can take her on the aerial silks that Bruce and Alfred got him for Christmas one year.
• Jason reads to her with her in his lap. Not just kid books but classical literature, he knows she's paying attention and that makes him laugh a little bit he loves it.
• Tim and her watch movies together, especially if she feels like he's doing too much work and is stressed.
• Alfred and her bake, well she "mixes" things for him, he even bought her a little stool and a matching apron with his. He may have also bought her mini kitchen utensils.
• Bruce doesn't really know what to do with her but he likes to watch her play with her toys that he bought her, but he notices that she likes to watch him while he works in the study so he set up a little desk for her to "work" on. Really she just scribbled nonsensically on papers and showed them off to him. Sometimes he would ask her something about his work and she would babble at him or nod her head solemnly.
• Sometimes Mari has nightmares and it's really sad to hear, the only one she seems to let help her besides the kwamis is Alfred, Cass when she's over, and Jason.
• It was take your child to work day and Bruce took Mari when he had a meeting he had forgotten about, at this point Mari has already turned 2, he takes her in the meeting with him when the other party agrees it's fine. He expects Mari to be her friendly excited self but when they get into the meeting he feels her freeze in his arms when he greets Mrs Emilie Agreste and her son Adrien. The whole meeting Mari is hiding her face in his chest and shaking, he's terribly worried and more so when he sees Tikki glaring at the woman and her son from Mari's backpack.

Puppy Love - Part Two - Emily Sonnett x Reader
Sequel to Puppy Love.
**UPDATED AND REPOSTED**
“That was smooth as fuck, how are you even possibly considering not texting Sonnett?” Kelley asked the defender while they took their cleats off after practice, she had been pestering her the whole time about what she would say to the dog owner.
“Maybe the ball was meant for you? How do we even know I am the one she was giving her number to?” Sonnett threw a cleat harshly into her bag, flopping back, exasperated at Kelley’s relentlessness.
“Because the dog pushed the ball to you not me,” Kelley smacked Sonnett on the arm.
“You’re really trusting that the dog got the right person?”
“The dog who knows how to wave did not give the ball to the wrong person,” the brunette rolled her eyes, “but, if you really don’t think it was meant for you, I’ll text her myself and see what she says,” she leaned over trying to take the ball from Emily’s hands.
“No!” Emily shot up, eyes wide while she looked at her friend. Kelley was eccentric and would say anything she could to prove her point that the number was meant for Emily and not herself, so Kelley messaging Y/N was a very dangerous thing.
“So, you agree it was meant for you then,” Kelley tapped the ball as Emily tightened her grip on it.
Kelley watched at the blonde traced her fingers the writing on the ball, tapping her thumbs on either side, her eyebrows furrowed, biting her bottom lip.
“What would I say? What if she isn’t really interested in me? Or what if she just likes the idea of me? Or-“ Sonnett begins to ramble, only stopping when Kelley covers one of her fidgeting hands, stilling the thumb tapping the ball.
“Then you find that out after you talk to her, but you can’t always live in the what ifs Son. I won’t push you if you truly don’t feel comfortable,” the brunette said softly, dipping her head to try and meet eyes.
Sonnett’s hands stilled, she bit her lip, nodding her head slightly.
“You really think it’s a good idea? Or are you just pushing this for the sake of pushing it?”
Kelley’s hand tightened around Sonnett’s wrist, “I would never push you into something that isn’t good for you,” she tapped a finger above the note, “this is a good idea. She didn’t push it, didn’t try and force an answer, she’s letting you decide for yourself.”
Emily squeezed the ball into place between her knees, then reached down for her phone and began slowly inputting the number. Sitting with the blank message open, Sonnett chewed her lip, debating what to say.
Sonnett: Why aren’t Dalmatians good at Hide n’ Seek?
“You did not just start talking to her by sending her a dog joke?” Kelley pulled her hand off, rolling her eyes at the blonde. Sonnett grinned back, nodding proudly, nerves having left while she thought of a joke.
“Of course I did! I want someone who can handle a joke,” Sonnett defended herself.
Y/N: Because they’re always spotted!
Sonnett burst out laughing at the quick response, tilting her phone to show the correct answer to the joke to Kelley.
“You need to marry this woman,” Kelley shook her head when she saw the reply, happy that the response was exactly the type of response the blonde was looking for.
Y/N: What is it called when a dinosaur gets a goal?
Emily furrowed her eyebrow while she thought about the answer.
Sonnett: I don’t know, what?
Y/N: A dino-score!
The blonde giggled to herself, it was such a cheesy joke.
“Sonnett only you would find someone with worse jokes than you at a soccer field,” Kelley teased the younger woman while they continued to get ready to leave.
Sonnett hardly heard her while she went back and forth sending more bad joke or puns, both seeming to have an extensive joke knowledge.
“Hey Casanova, you know you’re going to have to ask her out at some point, you can’t just keep sending her jokes, maybe even have a conversation with her,” the brunette nudged her shoulder as she stood up.
“Yeah, I know, but what if she isn’t interested in that part?” Sonnetts nerves having seemed to return, rubbing her hand on the back of her neck.
“Son,” Kelley tugged her off the bleachers and began leading them to her car, “she didn’t give you her number to just send you bad jokes back and forth.” She wrapped her arm around Sonnetts shoulder, tugging her into her side.
“I know, but this just seems too easy, too good to be true kind of thing,” she fidgeted with the strap of her gym bag.
Kelley spun around and gripped both of Emily’s shoulders, “look at me,” she said firmly, waiting for the younger woman make eye contact, “it is easy, stuff like this shouldn’t be hard, don’t think so much. Let it be easy, let it be fun, let it just flow.”
“What do I say now? The joke seemed like such a good way to start talking to her, but now I don’t know how to switch to talking normal,” Sonnett said softly.
“Don’t over think it,” Kelley repeated, keeping her hands on Sonnetts shoulders, squeezing them slightly, “keep it simple, ask about her day, how her run was. Don’t over complicate it.”
Sonnett bit her lip and nodded along.
Sonnett: So, how’s the pup? He steal anymore soccer balls?
Y/N: Nah he only steals them from pretty blondes ;)
Kelley pushed Emily away from her, “see Sonny! She’s flirting with you! You’ve got this.”
Sonnett blushed at the other blondes comment when it came through.
After that, conversation flowed easily between the two. They texted constantly throughout the day; a smile never left Sonnetts face the whole time. Y/N was smart and funny, she genuinely wanted to know about Emily, asking about her life, her day.
The next morning Y/N was already on the field with Orion, the dog racing back and forth on the far end. Sonnett paused at the gate just watching before they were seen, Bagel eagerly tugged at the leash, excited to go run with the large dog.
“If you don’t walk in, I’m kicking another ball over there,” Kelley pushed the blonde the rest of the way into the field.
Sonnett stumbled but continued to cross the field, Bagel leading the way to the pair. When Y/N saw them, she began to make her way over, Orion trotting alongside her.
“Hey, you guys made it,” Y/N smiled.
“Of course, we’re here every morning.”
“Right,” Y/N nodded, she nervously petted Orion. The two now standing in awkward silence, broken up by Bagel pulling trying to get closer to the shepherd.
“Oh, umm, this is Bagel,” Emily motioned to the dog
“Hey buddy,” Y/N stepped forward, palm out for the dog to sniff her, “can I?” she confirmed with Emily first.
“Of course!”
Y/N knelt down, letting the excited dog sniff her before she began to pet her.
“Orion is good with dogs if you want to let them meet,” Y/N glanced up, watching Sonnett nod and Y/N called Orion over.
The dogs eagerly sniffed each other out before running off to chase each other.
“So, I’ve got a bit of a confession,” Y/N winced, biting her lip, staring off watching the dogs.
Sonnett felt her stomach drop, this was the crash after the good she had been worried about the day before. She nervously ran her thumb along her lip.
“I kind of knew who you and Kelley were already, I, uh, I knew the first morning I saw you guys,” Y/N awkwardly explained, vaguely pointing to the brunette on the other end.
The blonde defender didn’t know how to respond to that.
“Not that that matters, it really doesn’t change anything. Just lucky you have a good wingman over there sending you to my furman,” she motioned between the two mentioned, “It doesn’t matter who you are, I was still very much hooked on the beautiful blonde across the field.”
Sonnett stared wide eyed at the woman.
“That was too much information,” Y/N blew out a breath, “you guys go train, I got these two.” she shuffled her feet away from the blonde.
“Uhh, no, that wasn’t too much. I really appreciate that it doesn’t change anything, some people are so weird about it,” Sonnett blushed, “I do have a confession of mine though. I wasn’t scared of Orion yesterday, I, umm, I was, well I was nervous to talk to you.”
“Hey! Lovebirds, we training today or not?” Kelley called.
“Go, before you guys lose another ball to her impatience,” Y/N chuckled, pushing the blonde, “not sure your equipment manager will be too happy about another one. We can do coffee after if you want.”
Sonnett had begun walk backwards, listening, “I’d like that,” she nodded with a soft smile before jogging away.
It was slightly awkward after Emily and Kelley finished training. The two blondes had leashed their dogs and began to walk through the park, Y/N guiding them towards the small coffee cart.
“So, you did deep dive on me?” Emily broke the ice while they walked, tone light and teasing.
Y/N blushed and looked away, “ahh, not quite. I knew who you guys were already. Both teams actually. Fuck, I take that back, that makes me sound like such a stalker.”
“No! Not all,” Sonnett laughed, “fan then?”
“Of you or teams?”
“Both?”
“Umm guess I gotta go with both then too,” Y/N chuckled, “fuck I should really stop talking. I’m going to start from again.”
Y/N stopped walked and held her hand out, “hi, I’m Y/N L/N, I am a veterinarian. This is Orion, he is German shepherd. And what is your name?”
Sonnett stopped as well and burst out laughing when Y/N formally introduced herself, but held her hand out, shaking Y/N’s.
“I’m Emily Sonnett, I’m a professional soccer player. This is Bagel Bongo, she is an Australian cattle dog.”
The two women shook hands, smiling at each other, before both laughing and pulling apart.
“Alright Emily Sonnett, soccer player extraordinaire, important life question, and there is a right answer to this question.”
“Alright Y/N L/N, hit me.”
“Marvel or DC?” Y/N asked with a straight face.
“What’s that?” Sonnett answered with a straight face.
The pair arrived in line at the coffee cart, Y/N pulled to a stop and just stared at the blonde. Emily cracked quickly and began giggling.
“I’m messing with you,” she squeezed Y/N’s bicep, “I think I gotta go with Marvel. I mean, you’ve seen Captain Marvel, right?”
“I knew I liked you Sonnett,” Y/N winked.
After that, conversation flowed between them as they walked through the park. They easily laughed and smiled, and before they realized It, they were back at the soccer field. Standing at the entrance, Sonnett needing to go one way, while Y/N the other.
Neither were ready to separate though, standing off to the side of the path, continuing to talk.
Suddenly Bagel let out a series of barks, pulling abruptly past Y/N, harshly taking Emily with her, sending her crashing into Y/N. Sonnett was able to gain control of the dog, holding the leash firm while Y/N helped to brace her.
“Hi,” Emily whispered when she realized how close she was to Y/N.
“Hi,” Y/N whispered back, “I need to get to work.”
“Right,” the defender whispered, but didn’t quite pull away, “same time tomorrow?”
“This or training?”
“Both, definitely both.”
Y/N gave her a gentle kiss on the cheek before beginning to pull away, “I like both.”

I’m hella sleep deprived, so let’s see if I can accurately articulate my wording.
I absolutely cannot STAND people like this. I specifically dub these people “pit mommies”, which are a subcategory of “fur mommies”.
First and foremost, not everyone is going to like your breed of dog. Get over it. Not everyone has to even like your specific dog. If you act like this, chances are, I am not going to like you or your dog. Quit acting entitled just because you own a damn “pit bull”, which probably isn’t even a legit pit bull.
Secondly, this is ableist as fuck. This person isn’t technically judging someone for not liking pit bulls, but rather people who FEAR pit bulls. Ya know, something people don’t necessarily have control over? Something that takes effort and even therapy to get over? “You can’t let bad experiences deter you from them” is by far the most ableist sentence in this whole post. Sure, people should let “bad experiences” hold them back, but like it or not, these dogs (and others) have done more than just cause “bad experiences”. Some have caused actual trauma.
Some people have PTSD from dogs, and that is valid. Some people are afraid of all large dogs, all dogs that look a certain way, particular breeds, ect. And that is fine as long as it isn’t ruining the person’s life! But expecting someone to just more or less “get over it” is messed up just because you think everyone should like your stupid dog. I’m sure OP wouldn’t like it if someone told them to get over their bad experiences or trauma, right? They would probably be very upset. “Even multiple bad experiences” just takes the cake. Imagine telling someone who had their face ripped off and disfigured to just get over it and like your dog.
Thirdly, it is NOT all in how you raise them! This stupid saying needs to die already. It’s dangerous in so many ways. I get why pit pushers and just uneducated but well meaning people use it. It sounds nice on the surface, but in reality it isn’t. People are going to get dogs that don’t fit their lifestyle (as they already do) because they think their dog is a purely blank slate, which just isn’t true. Breeds and standards exist for a reason. Breeds don’t just differ in looks, they differ in temperament and personality and so much more. This stuff does also go on a dog by dog basis, but there’s still genetic influences even in that.
Someone might buy a well bred pit bull puppy from an amazing breeder. The family raises the puppy in a loving, caring home, they socialize it and work with it. They do everything right. Best dog owners ever! Then one day, the dog starts showing signs of aggression. No trauma involved. Everything done perfectly right. But every time they walk their pit bull near another dog, the pit starts going nuts. It wasn’t like that before! Why now? One day, the pit bull gets loose and immediately goes after another dog. It goes right for the dog’s throat and latches on. Everyone involved is mortified. What went wrong?
The answer is nothing. The dog, being a well bred pit bull, just happened to fit the typical characteristics of the breed despite how it was raised. It isn’t anyone’s fault. You could blame the dog, but the dog is just reacting on its instincts and doing what it’s been bred to do for 200 years. You could blame the dog owners for not containing their dogs better, but accidents can and do happen, even when people do everything they can to prevent it. And no, we aren’t going to blame the dog that got attacked because in this scenario, that dog wasn’t doing anything wrong either.
Sadly, this sort of thing happens a lot. I see it all the time. People freaking out online about their pit bulls (or other breeds) showing signs of dog aggression (or doing other specific breed traits). This is because nature- genetics -still play a major role in our dogs. There are just some things that can never be loved or trained out, only managed.
NOW, on the other side of the same coin… we have dogs out here that are being beaten, abused, starved, neglected, ect. Dogs that are not being raised right. And yet… they are still loving? They are forgiving and sweet?
If it’s “all in how you raise them”, then why are so many pit bulls such loving creatures? Shelters are full of these dogs and their mixes. And so many of them are not from formerly loving homes. Some of these dogs were never raised, never trained. Just dumped there at the pound. Some were pulled off the side of the road, having been let out or escaped on its own, or simply born and raised on the street. Others have been beaten, starved, dehydrated, tied to fences and left to rot, so much pain and suffering. But somehow these dogs lol at us with love in their eyes and a wagging tail.
And not to mention… saying “it’s all in how you raise them” also implies you cannot save these dogs. It implies there’s no hope for them. That because they weren’t raised right in a good home that they are devil dogs who will never be loving and that just simply isn’t true. But there’s a specific kind of victim here I want to discuss and that’s fighting dogs. This statement pretty much samba fighting dogs to a vicious and bloody hell where they will be nothing but killers. The statement implies that they cannot be rehabbed or saved. Yes, rehabbing a fighting dog is hard, but it isn’t impossible.
Next time you wanna say “it’s all in how you raise them”, think of the scared families who feel like they failed because their dog is acting like it’s breed or it’s acting on its own bad individual genetics (yes that’s also a real thing). Also think about all of the dogs who have been through hell and back hurts are still total sweethearts who love everyone.
Fourthly, the post ends with the ever so typical pit mommy hypocrisy. Those damned, vicious chihuahuas! Everyone knows they’re the most aggressive dog on the planet and their owners don’t care to train them because they’re so small and “harmless!” Those damned chihuahuas make our precious wittle pibbles look so mean and give them a bad reputation!,
Nope, can’t do it. I hate it. For granted, OP did say chihuahua people and not the dogs, even going as far as to clarify they do love the dogs. That’s like… the only good thing about this post. It’s pretty valid to hate or dislike the community surround a certain breed of dog (you can obviously see my disdain for pit mommies and people who are gaga over poodle-mixes. I also don’t care for the “rescue is my favorite breed” kind of people, but it typically depends on the individual in that sense). It’s also valid, as I mentioned earlier, to not like certain breeds for whatever reason. The issue I have here is that this hypocrisy almost always comes up with these pit nutters.
They go on and on and on about how much they hate chihuahuas and their owners, how chihuahuas are so mean and aggressive and they bite a lot and their owners let them do it because they’re cute and small and blah blah blah. It’s just annoying as hell and you would think someone who understands what it’s like to constantly have their breed of dog hated and shit on wouldn’t be turning around and doing the exact same thing to another breed of dog!
Oh boy. I’m surprised “it’s the deed and not the breed” didn’t get mentioned. I don’t hate that saying as much as some of the others, but it’s almost always used when saying “it’s all in how you raise them” accompanied by complaining about how horrible chihuahuas are. Or some other little breed of dog. Then it isn’t “the deed and not the breeds”. Then it IS the breed. It’s never the breed when it’s the pit bulls, when it is the bred when it’s any other kind of dog, particular if not exclusively, chihuahuas.
I’ve left pit groups for the way people have shit on chihuahuas before. I like them, but I’m not their biggest or anything. I used to hate chihuahuas, I used to be the pit mommy I now cannot stand. I was also younger and very much new to the world of dogs. I still am new with so much more to learn, but I will continue to learn more and grow over the years just like I have always been.
Anyway, that’s enough of my ranting. All of that over a small, stupid post.

8 Letters
Tumblr media
OR: 4 times he couldn’t say he loved you + 1 time he did
Ok, here we are with the very over hyped Vince fic! This was inspired by 8 Letters by Why Don’t We and has been swimming around in my head for a while before I realize it fits with this himbo.
Shoutouts to the following (and hopefully this is short because this is not an awards show even though it would be fun to pretend it is): @vincecdunn because Nikki’s the reason I’m on the Vince train so as retaliation I’m just going to keep sending her ideas for more fics to write, @pucksnsticksnhockeyboys and @broadstbroskis for allowing me to come into your inboxes and be annoying and bounce ideas off of, and then @pettypetey and @pumpkinpatchmakar for the ways to say I love you and I’m 100% forgetting people but that’s just because I suck
Other people who wanted to be tagged: @all-time-fanatic @marialovesdean @oyeinpayne @ghstandpucks @maybehockeymaybenot @itzelmunoz and @thecasualyogi (unsure why it isn’t letting me tag you sad boi)
So, here we go, all 7.8k words of this 4+1
______________________
I
Tonight was one of the first nights in a while that the two of you were able to spend together, Vince on the road on and off for what felt like longer than usual and you just drowning at work. Any chance you got to be together at this point was almost always spent alone in the comforts of your place or his. You were spending it at your place, watching him stand at the stove as he cooked dinner for the two of you.
“God, who you have thought someone could look so sexy stirring pasta,” you admire him, propping yourself up on your elbows to watch him.
He laughs, putting the large spoon on the counter, turning around to face him. Vince approaches you, pulling you close to him. His hand finds the small of back, the other tilting your chin up to him. He bites his lip, looking down at you. “You think that’s sexy, just wait,” he says, his lips planted against yours before you can say anything else.
You pull away at the sound of splashing water, seeing the pot boiling over. “Ah, fuck,” Vince releases his grip and runs to turn the burner down, you laughing as he goes back to stirring the boiling bubbles away.
“You know what’s great about this?” you say, sarcasm dripping in your voice.
“Oh no,” he mutters, bringing the pot over to the sink to drain the excess water, knowing that whatever you’re going to say isn’t going to be great for him.
“You get to clean up.”
He puts the now empty pot back on the stove, shaking the remaining water off the pasta in the strainer, “But I made the dinner!”
“Yeah, and then you made the mess.”
He turns to you, a mischievous look on his face. “You’re evil,” he says, lunging at you, lifting you off the ground and sending you into a fit of giggles as you try to wriggle your way free of his grasp.
“Vince!” you squeal, your arms overlapping his. “Put me down!”
“I like holding you, though,” he whines, putting you down without letting you go.
You turn around to face him, putting your hand on his face, tracing a random pattern on his cheek with your thumb. “Hold me on the ground and after you put the pesto on the pasta,” you tell him, giving him a quick kiss before pushing him away. “I thought you didn’t like pesto?”
He shrugs, putting pasta into the bowls you hand him. “I’m not crazy about it, but it’s your favorite, so I’ll put up with it for you.”
You can feel the heat rushing to your cheeks over something so simple. “You’re nice,” you tell him, in a sing-songy voice, taking a bite of the pasta.
“Only to you,” he says, sending you a wink that makes your insides flutter.
Properly full from the simple dinner, after you clean the dishes and Vince cleans the stove, you retreat to your bedroom where you planned on spending the rest of the night. “What do you want to watch tonight?” Vince asks you, settling onto your bed with your TV remote in hand.
He reaches his arm out, gesturing for you to come snuggle up next to him, perfectly fitting against him as he kisses the top of your head, the warmth from his body comforting you more than the blankets that covered your bed probably ever would. “Gossip Girl,” you insist, knowing what his reaction would be.
Vince groans, throwing his head back. “Come on, that show is so bad.”
You look up at him, imitating the puppy dog eyes and signature pout he would give you all too often when he was asking you to do something. “Yes. But that’s what makes it so good to watch,” you plead.
He rolls his eyes, giving in and pulling it up on your Netflix. “Now how could I say no to that face,” he tells you.
“You can’t,” you tell him as he pulls up the show.
Letting out a small, “Yay,” you earn a giggle from his lips before kissing him quickly and settling into the show. You start with the first episode of the second season, Vince stroking your arm absentmindedly, laughing at how cheesy the show is. He steals the occasional glance at you, loving how closely you could pay attention to anything in front of you, analyzing, critiquing, admiring what was before you. You did it with anything and everything that you fixated on, something Vince could never do and something he loved about you.
Not that you’ve said you love each other yet. But, you were the only thing he could focus on outside of hockey at any moment.
“The true reason I should stay right where I am and not get in the car,” the two of you watch Blair Waldorf on your screen in her scene with Chuck Bass. “Three words. Eight letters. Say it, and I’m yours.”
The screen cuts to Chuck, his hesitation. “I-I...”
“Thank you. That’s all I needed to hear,” with Blair getting in the car, leaving Chuck standing there watching the girl he knew he loved drive off with his heart.
That part always made you cry, letting out a soft sob at the sight of the character you hated the most, actually experiencing heartbreak, slightly humanizing the demon that you thought he was. Vince, paying more attention to you than the show, had no clue what was happening.
“This is a dumb question,” he starts, watching you wipe the tears that had fallen down your face, “But what are the three words?”
You sit up, your hand placed on his thigh sending a chill through his body. “I love you.”
His eyes go wide, swallowing hard. Given what just happened in the episode, he knew it was ridiculous to think, but he couldn’t help but wonder if what just happened on your screen would happen right now. “Are... are those the words or are you telling me?” he asks, his voice shaking.
You hesitate for a moment. You had been together for five months already. He was the person you trusted the most, no matter how dumb he might be sometimes. You would do anything for him, and you were sure that he would do anything for you. You thought about him constantly, but you had never been in love before. Whatever you felt for Vince was something you hadn’t felt for anyone. “Both,” you decide, seeing the panic wash over his face. “You don’t have to say it back. I’m not gonna leave you if you don’t,” you reassure him.
He opens and closes his mouth like a fish, trying to muster up the courage to actually say what he wanted to. He knows how he feels about you, but, “I can’t say it.” You knew the pain you felt at hearing those words flashed over your face for a moment because of the quick, “I’m sorry,” he let out before getting up off your bed and heading for the door.
“Vince, hey, wait,” you say, chasing after him and beating him to your door. With your back against it, you look at your boyfriend, panicked, breathing fast, hands shaking. “Vince,” you say his name again, hearing it coming from you calming him down, “You don’t have to say it. I promise. Just please, don’t leave.”
He studies your face, the pain that he just caused you still showing. “I’m sorry,” he whispers, dropping his head.
“Hey,” you say, tilting his head up to look at you. “Listen to me when I say this: it’s fine. I don’t want you to feel pressured to say it just because I did. I told you that because I do love you. If you don’t feel the same way, that’s fine. I can’t force you to love me,” you tell him, smiling through it. He had to know it was a fake smile, just using it to hide how you really felt. “You still want to be with me, right?”
He hesitated for longer than he should have, even though his answer popped into this head immediately. “What? Of course I do. Can we just,” he takes a deep breath, trying to find his words, “Do you think we can watch something else?”
You nod, taking his hand and leading you back to your bed. You just fucked everything up, didn’t you? But Vince’s panic and now lack of attention to even the Netflix catalogue he was scrolling through was more worrisome than him not saying he loves you. “Actually,” you say, gently taking the remote from his hands, “Do you think we can talk about this? Like, I’m ok with it, but, I don’t know, you’re kind of worrying me.”
He can’t look at you, staring at the TV instead as the now muted screen flashed with characters he didn’t recognize. “I don’t know,” he lies. “The girls I was with before I met you kinda fucked me up I guess.” You could feel your heart breaking watching him like this, more so than when you watched Chuck and Blair. “I thought I was in love with them, but then it always ended with them using me for my money, because I play in the NHL, for sex. I mean, my purity score thing is so low for a reason, right?” he jokes, you trying to smile even though you could feel yourself wanting to cry. “Fuck, one of them even called Sammy because she liked him more while I was asleep in the bed next to her and asked him to go pick her up.”
You take his face in your hands, pulling him in for a kiss. Using the pads of your thumbs, you wipe away the tears that you got on him, unsure if they were just yours or if he had started crying, too. “I will never do that to you,” you assure him. “I’ll even call Sammy and tell him that you’re better.”
He laughs, sniffling a little bit. “Can you do that every day? Really wear down his self esteem.”
You laugh, giving him a quick kiss, happy that he was at least smiling again. “I’m not going to emotionally destroy a man.”
“But it’s Sammy!”
II
You, Nikki, and Patricia were sitting on Nikki’s couch together, each with one glass of wine for the night because of the need to drive later, pizza, popcorn, and much more junk food than you would like to admit. Dressed as if you hadn’t seen daylight in years, you all had on sweatpants, sweatshirts, hair tied back, makeup free, everything that would signal to an outsider that you had all stopped caring, but to you, it was just a night in after work. It was a much needed girls night, the stress of work getting to all of you while you sat there with your best friends trying to find something to watch. With the boys off on a road trip, you could definitely use the company. Part of you was bothered by Vince not saying he loves you, but could you really justifiably get upset but that?
“What are we watching?” Nikki asks, pulling up Netflix, practically forcing you to relive the conversation with Vince from the other night.
“Uh, Gilmore Girls?” Patricia suggests.
Without saying a word, Nikki plays the episode she left off on, Rory and Dean celebrating their anniversary together by going out to what was supposed to be a nice, sweet night.
“What do you think Connecticut is like?” Patricia asks about the setting of the iconic show.
“My ex in college was from Connecticut. Nothing good comes from Connecticut,” comes from Nikki, you barely hearing her as you fixate on the episode.
“Gilmore Girls comes from Connecticut.”
Without missing a beat, Nikki says, “One good thing comes from Connecticut.” The two of them keep talking, you barely hearing anything they say as you watch Dean and Rory in the car that Dean had built for her, telling her he loves her for the first time. Rory doesn’t say it back, the same expression on her face that you say on Vince’s that night. “Hey, Y/N, what’s up?” Nikki asks, snapping you away from the show.
“Oh, nothing, why?” you lie through your teeth, your best friends exchanging concerned looks.
“You know that you’re crying, right?” Patricia asks, snagging the remote and pausing the episode.
You reach up, feeling your now damp cheeks, wiping away the tears you didn’t even know were there that were brimming in your eyes. “Oh, wow,” you let out, laughing a little bit. “I guess the episode just got to me,” you lie again. Nikki sits there, eyebrow raised, lips pursed as if to say ‘bitch, please,’ while Patricia just sat there, waiting for you to answer. “I told Vince I love him,” you start.
You get cut off by the two of them screaming, “Oh my god!” and “What did he say?”
“He,” you sigh, debating on telling them the truth or not. “He panicked and couldn’t say it.”
Both of them gasp, you trying to figure out what emotions they felt; anger, sadness, disappointment, you swear all of it flashed on their face.
“Dump his ass!” Nikki yells, loud enough that her neighbors could probably hear her.
You take a handful of popcorn, throwing it at her in response, Patricia laughing and dodging the mess the two of you were creating as kernels flew past her face. “I’m not dumping him! He said he’s afraid of getting hurt,” you tell them once you stop throwing the food at each other.
“Does he think you’re going to hurt him?” Patricia asks, concern washing over her face.
“If he thinks that, you dump him,” Nikki pips in.
“You cut that out,” you fire back, pointing your finger at her. The ridiculousness of the simple action made all of you laugh, forgetting for a moment the conversation at hand.
“Do you really love him?” Patricia asks another question, both her and Nikki with the same expression on their faces.
You feel a soft smile growing on your face, nodding. “I really do. I’ve never loved anyone like I love him. Can we just talk about something else, please?”
They go back to talking about Connecticut, you trying to keep up with their banter.
“Wait, so why did you date that Connecticut boy?” you finally join the conversation, asking Nikki.
She shrugs, shoving the popcorn that was still in the bowl into her mouth. “Connecticut boys have money. I figured I could get some nice shit from him.”
“So you're a gold digger?” you tease her, Patricia nearly spitting out her wine.
Nikki sits there, mouth open pretending to be offended. “Talk about being a gold digger, you’re dating a professional athlete!”
You mirror her look, Patricia laughing as the innocent bystander in this. “Fuck,” is you can muster out before the three of you are laughing together.
“How could he not love that!” Nikki says once you catch your breath, pointing to the smile on your face and immediately making you turn red.
“Are you flirting with her?” Patricia asks
“Someone has too,” she shrugs, winking at you while sipping her wine.
You sit there, in awe of her bluntness. “If Vince were here he would get mad at you.”
“Where are they, anyway?” Patricia asks, changing the subject before Nikki can flirt with you more or make other snarky comments about your boyfriend.
“You see,” you start, setting down your glass of wine, “Vince told me they were going to California but when I checked the schedule it said they were going to play the Florida Panthers tomorrow,” you explain, all of you unable to contain your laughter, “so I think he’s confused.”
The three of you fall back into a rhythm that doesn’t involve talking about your boyfriend who was just about off your mind. After a few hours, you’re all yawning, the single glass of wine having no effect on you as you drowned out the alcohol with more water than anything so you could drive, Nikki kicking you out so she can go to sleep.
While you and Patricia are walking to your cars, your phone starts buzzing, an incoming Facetime call from Vince. You answer, immediately turning the camera away from you, “Hey, babe, I’m walking to my car.”
“And you’re not showing me yourself because you don’t want me to see the guy walking you there?” he jokes, smirking at the camera. He was in the bed in his hotel room, the white sheets pulled up just low enough that his chest was exposed, shirtless as he always was when he was ready to sleep. He knew what he was doing; showing just enough of himself that it would drive you crazy enough to be distracted.
“Yeah, this is the man,” you tease, panning over to Patricia getting into your car, “Say hi to Vince!”
“I’m stealing your girl!” she yells, ducking into her car and shutting her door, Vince’s laugh echoing in the air.
You prop your phone up in the thing your mom got you, suctioned to your dash so you can still see your phone while driving, even though you told her you had Apple CarPlay and had no need for it. Driving down the street, you fall into a mundane conversation with Vince about getting to Florida, teasing him for confusing it with California, telling him about the girls night you just had.
“Come on, show me your face!” you hear him whine. Without taking your eyes off the road, you know exactly the look on his face: those green eyes of his wide like a puppy, his bottom lip jutted out and if he weren’t holding his phone, his hands would be intertwined in themselves under his chin to show you he was begging.
“No, I look gross. My hair is tied back, I have no makeup on, and I’m in a groutfit.”
“Have you ever seen me?”
You roll your eyes, hitting the button to flip the camera now that you were at a red light. “Yes, I’ve seen you. You’re hot,” you say without shame.
“Fuck,” you hear him let out a long and low whisper. You roll your eyes at him, even though you can’t help but blush and smile at the way he was practically visibly drooling over you. “I didn’t know gross could be so beautiful.”
“I look like a Founding Father, shut up,” you say, glad it was dark enough that he couldn’t see the heat rushing to your cheeks.
He laughs again, making you smile even wider at the sound. “Who would have thought I would like sleeping with a Founding Father.”
“That is necrophilia!” you scream, loud enough that you could probably be heard outside your car, drowning out the sound of his laugher. “I never want to hear you say anything like that ever again!”
You pull up to your building, getting out and walking to your place while Vince rambles on about something that Sammy had done on the plane. “Oh!” he says once you unlock your door, startling you and almost dropping your phone, “Look what I got you!”
“You got me something?” you ask him, walking through your dark apartment into your room.
“I saw and I liked it and thought you would like it so I had to get it!” he says like a giddy child. He holds up a small stuffed puppy, shoving it almost too close to the camera, “Can you see the tag on his collar?”
He pulls it away slightly, the letter on it becoming clear. “His name is Vince!” you exclaim, the biggest smile on his face as he holds it next to him.
“Because you say when I get excited I remind you of a little puppy.” He sits there with the small stuffed animal pressed to his face, beaming at his purchase that he couldn’t wait to give you, even though he ruined the surprise he had anticipated because he couldn’t wait until he got home to see you. You take a screenshot, unable to hide how adorable you found him in that moment.
“I love it, Vince. I can’t wait for you to get home,” you say to him, a big yawn coming from him. His eyes get droopy, the way he gets before he’s about to fall asleep, a lazy smile on his face that means he felt the same.
You settle onto your bed, turning on your tv to watch whatever was on. You sit there in silence holding your phone, yawning a few times yourself. “Hey, babe, I’m gonna go to sleep,” you say, leaning over to turn off your lights, “I love you,” you say, forgetting that you're upset over his inability to say it back, seeing that he was already asleep, anyway, unable to return with a response.
III
You were swamped with work, having to hustle on a Saturday to get everything done. Vince was tired of being cooped up inside, only really going out when he had practice or a game, so he was the one to suggest going to the coffee shop half way between your apartments in order to just be somewhere that wasn’t the four walls of your apartments.
“You’re not working,” he says in a teasing voice, watching you sit there staring out the window at the people passing by.
“I just,” you sigh, “I don’t want to do this project.”
“Can I help?” he asks, getting up from his seat and standing behind you, just enough room between your chair and the wall for him to fit and lean against you. “You’re on Facebook.”
You look up at him, an innocent look on your face. “I’m using a rewards system!” you defend yourself. “I was working for half an hour, so I’m watching a video as a break.” You scroll back to the video you were just watching as he rests his hands on your shoulders, rubbing the slightly. You find the video of an artist with a bunch of metal strips, twisting them into a metal tree art piece. You turn to him, eyes wide with excitement, a huge smile on your face that he can’t help but roll his eyes at, mirroring your smile. “Isn’t it cool?”
“You’re acting like a child. That’s my job,” he says, kissing your cheek before going back to sit down.
“That just means you’ve rubbed off on me. Or maybe I’ve rubbed off on you?” you wonder, scrolling to find one more video to watch. The next video is scene from That 70’s Show, and old favorite of yours that you haven’t seen since it was taken off Netflix. Eric and Donna were in a car, probably the Vista Cruiser in one of the earlier seasons judging by how young they look. The captions on, your sound off, you read the scene instead of watching. It was Donna telling Eric she loved him, only for him to panic and respond with, “I love cake.” The smile on your face disappears, looking up at Vince and thankful that he was paying more attention to his phone than he was to you.
You just wanted him to say he loved you. You were sure that he did, and you had told him that you did. But he couldn’t say it. You were constantly going back and forth between being ok with it and being upset by it, knowing that it wasn’t fair to force him to say something if he didn’t mean it, but also knowing that it wasn’t fair to you to spill your guts to him for him to remain closed off.
You take a deep breath, switching back to the tab that had the new marketing pitch you were working on. You get to typing, focusing on the project while you see four other cursors working on different parts, occasionally switching to another section to check one of your partners' work while they do the same for you. You barely notice the people around you, the coffee shop practically packed to capacity as an afternoon rush came in. Vince would look up from his phone, stealing the occasional glance while you take no notice.
You both jump at the sound of someone knocking on the window next to you. Look up, Vince knew who it was immediately, irritated by your “Oh my god!” sqeual as you practically leap from the table to run outside.
Vince watches as you jump into the guys arms, a huge smile on your face, unable to read your lips as you talk with him. The guy was more attractive than Vince had remembered. Fuck, he looked like a model, and there Vince was, a hockey player, mad about it.
“How have you been?” you ask your friend Jack, someone you hadn’t seen in years.
“Pretty good,” he tells you, his arms lingering on your waist once you pull away from the hug you practically forced on him in the first place. “You?”
“Good, busy. Getting out with my boyfriend instead of acting like an old agoraphobic couple,” you tell him motioning to Vince sitting at the table, arms crossed over his chest. You both wave to him, Vince mirroring with a wave and a very unenthusiastic look. “Who’s apparently tired from practice,” you lie, hoping he would buy the explanation for Vince’s unexpected attitude.
“Isn’t he a hockey player?” You look back at Vince who’s now looking down at his phone, nodding, a soft smile on your face as you just stare at your dumb boyfriend. “You really have a thing for athletes, huh?”
You roll your eyes, knowing what he was referencing: Jack was technically your ex, having hooked up a few times, gone out on a few dates, he even brought you to a family wedding of his because you were seeing each other when the invitations went out, breaking up not long after the event. You never called him your boyfriend, and as far as you were concerned, you weren’t his girlfriend, but still, you weren’t just friends. “Hockey players are a little better than baseball players, bub,” you tell him, knowing it would hurt his ego a little bit.
He scrunches his face, pretending to be hurt but laughing anyway. “You always know how to hit a guy where it hurts, Y/L/N,” he tells you, both of you nodding. You were about to tell him goodbye, missing your chance when he says, “Do you think I could meet your new guy?”
You feel your breath stop for a moment, your eyes going wide at the thought of your ‘ex’ meeting your boyfriend. “Uh, sure, if you want to?” you tell him, obviously unsure of the situation that was about to unfold. “Vince?” you snap his attention away from his phone, the two of you standing over him. “This is my friend Jack. We went to school together,” you say, Jack extending his hand for Vince to shake.
Vince swallows hard, a wave of jealousy washing over him as this guy stands in front of him. “Nice to meet you,” he says, a cold tone in his voice. You shoot him a look, Jack taking your seat while Vince pulls you into his lap without you expecting it, planting a firm kiss on your lips. “So, Jack, what do you do?” he asks the guy sitting across from you, holding you tight around your waist as if he were marking his territory.
You look at your boyfriend, confused by why he was acting like this. He sends you a soft smile, his eyes flickering down to your lips, making you melt a little as you turn your attention back to Jack. “I work in marketing.”
“Oh, just like, my girl here.”
‘My girl?’ you mouth to yourself, unsure if either of the boys saw you.
“That’s how we met,” Jack starts, a little confused as well by Vince’s actions. “We were both marketing majors so we had all of the same classes.”
Vince keeps on asking Jack questions, practically leaving you out of the conversation, occasionally kissing your cheek while Jack was talking.
“Wow, you two are clearly in love with each other,” Jack points out, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. Vince freezes, his heart racing against your chest as Jack gets up. “I’ve actually got to get going, but it was great seeing you, Y/N. We should catch up again.”
You nod, agreeing with him as he leaves, taking your seat back across from Vince, glaring at him. “What the hell was that?”
 “What? I can’t kiss your cheek occasionally?” he scoffs, leaning back in his chair. You watch as he stares out the window, Jack still in his view.
“You never do it like that,” you point out. Then it dawns on you: “You were jealous! Why were you jealous?”
“I was not,” he pouts, his arms crossed.
“You’re so cute when you’re jealous!” you squeal, careful not to be too loud in the quiet environment. His face turns red, his lips pursed as he stares out the window, clearly ready to deny it. You reach over to poke his cheeks, just to agitate him.
He swats you away, hating that you were right. “You think I’m cute?”
“Why were you jealous?” you ask again.
“You think I’m cute?” he says, leaning on the table.
You smirk at him, imitating his body language. “We both know I’m going to win this so you should just answer me now,” you say slowly.
“He’s the guy you dated in college,” Vince says.
“I never showed you his picture.”
He hesitates for a moment, knowing the exact reaction this was going to illicit: “I saw the pictures you posted with him on Instagram.”
You stop and think for a moment. The last time you even saw Jack was a few years ago. “Those pictures were from my freshman year of college. You’ve scrolled that far back on my page?”
He sticks out his bottom lip, eyes wide to give you his puppy dog face. “Sometimes, when I miss you, and I know you’re busy and can’t talk, I scroll through your Instagram so I can see your face.”
You feel yourself melting at his words, the face he was giving you making you love him that much more. “Come here,” you tell him, pulling him up around the table. You take him by the collar down to your level, giving him a sweet kiss. “And, yes, I do think you’re really cute,” you say to him, kissing him again.
IV
Vince watched in awe at his teammates. All of them were drunk, him, for once, being the most sober one around as they entered the bye week that took place around All-Star Weekend. He was waiting for you to show up, anxiously checking his phone to see if you had texted him anything saying that you and Patricia were at the bar. He hated being the only sober one, especially since it meant he would have to play dad if something happened unless you two showed up soon.
“You’re not drinking?” Sammy asks him, two beers in hand. Someone would think one was for Vince, but, no, both were for Sammy as he put the openings of both bottles in his mouth at once.
“I’m waiting for Y/N.”
“You’re whipped!” Sammy slurs, sitting down next to his friend in the booth he was refusing to get up from while he anxiously shakes his leg waiting to see you, rolling his eyes even though part of him knew he was right.
“Stop that,” Vince says, getting up and trying to shake his friend off in the crowded bar.
“You love her, right? I mean you have to love her to be like this,” Sammy insists, something he wouldn’t be doing had he not been drunk. Vince opens and closes his mouth, trying to figure out how to say what he wanted. “Dude.”
“You know I can’t say it,” is all Vince can let out. Sammy knows his past, Sammy knows what has happened to Vince. Saying it would mess something up. Those eight letters would ruin what he had with you when they were out in the open.
“I don’t know how to talk about this with you,” Sammy admits, eyes narrow since he was thinking about it anyway.
“I don’t think I want to talk about this with you.”
Before Sammy can say anything else, like magic, you appear at his side, Patricia in tow. “Hey,” you say to him, kissing him as he wraps his arms around your waist. He pulls away, looking over your shoulder to see Sammy making faces at the two of you, Vince giving him a look that told him to go away without you noticing.
Patricia wanders off with Sammy, leaving the two of you by yourselves. “How far deep are they?” you ask, dragging him to the bar so the two of you could start drinking, knowing you couldn’t drink so much that you would catch up with them, but enough that you wouldn’t have to act as the mother of the group.
“We’ve been here for an hour so I expect someone to be throwing up soon,” he laughs, not dropping your hand when the two of you sit down.
“If you’re drunk, do you have to take care of them?” you ask him, signalling to the bartender to come take your drink orders. You fall into conversation, watching Sammy strike out with multiple girls, Patricia spending the entire night with a single guy following her, something she clearly enjoyed as she milked at least four free drinks out of him.
“Think she’ll go home with him?” Vince asks, nodding over to Patricia as he finishes what might have been this third drink that night. As far as he knew, no one was throwing up, but now, he didn’t have to worry about it if he was just a little drunk.
You shrug, putting down your now empty glass. “If they both want that I guess.” You could feel yourself getting bored and tired, wishing that you and Vince could just leave and go home yourselves. But he looked like he was having fun watching the guys, a smile on his face whenever they did something stupid. You study Vinces face, his slightly pursed lips and his eyes sparkling as he watched Sammy strike out with what was probably his fourth girl of the night, Vince smiling as he couldn’t help but laugh at his friend. Your attentioned is pulled away by your phone buzzing in your hand, Nikki bombarding you with texts.
‘Have Vince watch these with you ;)’
She sends you two clips, both from a Halloween episode of New Girl. Unfamiliar with the show, you tap Vince to have him watch over your shoulder. You watch the two girls get into a limo, one going as far as exclaiming, “Hey, look! I’m in a limo! I wish I could have really long legs so I could stretch them out the length of the limo!”
The camera switches to a guy, telling them to have fun, saying, “I love you,” an immediate look of regret washing over his face, the girl in the limo responding with finger guns while her friend behind her mouthed, ‘No.’
You swallow hard, texting Nikki back yelling at her for it, definitely partially a product of the alcohol. You don’t even bother to look at the second video, afraid of what it would be and what it would bring considering the first one brought an awkward silence in the middle of the loud bar.
“Did you tell them?” he asks quietly, sitting back down next to you.
You straighten your posture, forming a thin line with your lips. “Yeah. I did. It was bothering me more than I thought it would and they figured it out.”
“How would they figure it out?” he snaps, his voice a little louder than it would have been had he not had so much to drink. “That’s not something you can just read on someone’s face.”
You take in a deep breath, knowing that people were starting to turn to look at the fight you were about to have. “Come on,” you grab him by his arm, leading him outside so at least if you started really fighting, they couldn’t kick you out. “Look, we were watching something where someone said I love you and the other person didn’t and I started crying,” you explain to him, feeling tears brimming in your eyes.
The people around you in the city were staring as they walked by, two idiots on a weird night causing a scene in a public. “Y/N,” he says, taking a step towards you and reaching for your hand.
You snatch it away, startling him that you were so quick. “No, Vince. I know I said it was fine,” you sob, “But it hurts. It hurts to love someone who doesn’t love you back. And I know you’ve been hurt before, but you’re letting that get in the way of you and me, and I don’t know how much longer I can handle being in love with you when you won’t even say you love me.”
He drops his head down, tears falling down his face while you were trying to fight your own from falling. “I’m sorry,” he whispers. “I’m sorry for being afraid, but I am.”
“Do you love me?” you ask him, taking a step towards him.
He looks up at you, both of you crying. His eyes are red, he looks like he’s in pain. He tries to say something, only to shake his head, taking you in for a hug before either of you can do anything else. You can feel him crying in your shoulder, one hand in your hair, the other at the top of your back. You stand there for a moment in shock, not sure how to react. You react into his hold, trying to calm him down. You had never seen him cry like this before, in fact, you weren’t sure you had ever seen him cry at all. You pull his head off your shoulder. His face soaked with tears. “I think you need to go home,” you tell him, wiping the tears from his face.
He doesn’t say anything, just pulling you in for another hug when the guys and Patricia stumble out of the bar. “Hey, we’re going to go to another bar,” Patricia tells you as you shake your head, signalling that she shouldn’t ask what was going on. “Do you guys want to come?”
“We can?” Vince questions, only looking at you, his face still red from the sobbing he had just done. “Unless you don’t want to.”
“You go with them. I’ll be fine, I want to go home anyway,” you insist, trying to push him off you. If there was one thing you hated, it was the kind of girls who made their boyfriends miss out on things with their friends because they insisted on attention, but you also didn’t want to be with him at this moment.
He smiles at you as you try to force yourself to not succumb to his looks, refusing to let go of you, “It’s not worth going with them if you aren’t going to be there with me.”
“Then don’t go. I’m going home.” You break free of his grip, turning on your heels and walking down the street to go home by yourself.

“Dude, have you seen Nikki’s snapstory?” Sammy’s voice comes through Vince’s phone.
“No, why?”
The concern in Sammy’s voice resonated with Vince, “I think you need to go look.”
Vince puts his teammate on speaker to go find one of your best friend’s story. “I’m looking now, hold on.”
Nikki was in her car, a picture of your favorite flowers in front of her steering wheel, your apartment building in the background. She had captioned it with ‘Bought my best friend flowers to go tell her I love her because her boyfriend won’t say it.’
“Ah, fuck,” Vince mutters, closing out the app.
“What are you gonna do about this?”
“I gotta go,” he says, hanging up before Sammy can say anything else.
-------
You run to the door when you hear the knocking, hoping it was Vince since you hadn’t heard much from him since that night at the bar. Instead, you find Nikki standing in your doorway with your favorite flowers. “What are these?” you deadpan, still a little irritated with her.
“Vince won’t say I love you so I figured I would,” she tells you, kissing you on the cheek and brushing past you. “I love you!” she says, dramatically, plopping down on your couch and putting her feet on your coffee table.
You look at the flowers, biting your lip. You just wanted Vince to say it. But you get it. “They’re just eight letters. He doesn’t have to say it when he can just show it. And you sending that video the other night does not and will not help anything,” you scold her.
You hear her scoff as you go to put the flowers in some water. “You know I was right to send that video. How does he show you he loves you? How could he possibly tell you he loves you without saying ‘I love you?’”
Rolling your eyes, knowing that she’s seen him show you loves you plenty of times. You could either argue with her more over what she did, or just list the ways you knew she was already aware of. “He always makes sure I’m the last person he sends a text to or calls at night and the first person he does that with in the morning. Even if he wakes up in the middle of the night and answers someone else, he’ll still send me another text right after. He’ll give me his pickle whenever he gets them because he knows I love them, even though he does, too. If he sees something on the road that he thinks I’ll like he gets it for me to surprise me with when he comes home.” You can feel yourself starting to cry thinking of all the way Vince has shown he loves you. But you really just wanted to hear those three words. You just wanted that verbal confirmation from him.
“I mean, babe, that’s great, but if he really meant it, wouldn’t he say it?”
You join her on the couch, trying to figure out how to answer. “Not everyone is good with expressing their emotions with words,” you shrug, unable to look at whatever expression she had on her face. “He’s been hurt before, when he’s told a girl that he loved her. I understand why he wouldn’t want to flat out say it to me.”
You get up, going back to your kitchen to at least fake the need for a glass of water. “Well, what else does he do?” you hear Nikki call over the sound of your tap.
You swallow, unsure if listing the ways was making you happy or sad. “He asks me to call him when I get home so he knows I’m safe. He’ll snapchat me funny faces when I’m sad because he wants to see me smile. He’ll even leave the guys if I’m upset and stay on Facetime with me until I’m happy. When we’re in the car he has my playlist on because he wants to listen to my music because it makes me happy. He doesn’t have to tell me he loves me.”
“Yes he does,” you hear from the other room, a voice that wasn’t Nikki’s. You see Vince standing there, bags in hand, Nikki slinking away into the other room to give you privacy.
“Hey, babe, what are you doing here?” you ask him, giving him a kiss for the first time in what felt like forever, trying to take the bags from him when he pulls away. The two of you walk over to your couch, setting the bags down and hearing clinking from inside. “Can I look inside?”
“No, not yet,” he stops you, taking your hands in his to prevent you from reaching in. “I’ll get everything out. Just, just trust me.” He closes his eyes and takes in a deep breath. “I told you I couldn’t say...it because of the girls I’ve said it to before. And god, I’m the worst for not saying it.  But you deserve so much more.”
“Vince, what are you talking about? I don’t need mo-”
He cuts you off, handing you the first thing in the bag. A bottle of your favorite wine, a note taped to it. “You’re my partner in wine,” you read out to him, laughing at the goofy grin on his face telling you that he was proud of himself.
A bag of your favorite coffee grounds is placed in your hands next. “Words can not espresso how much you bean to me.”
A can of your favorite soup. “I ‘canned’ live without you.”
A snack pack of pudding. “Thanks for pudding up with me.”
There was food item after food item with a note taped to it with a different pun revolving around what he thought about you. He went to the grocery store for all your favorites, handing them to you one by one until he gave you the last item in the bags: a bar of your favorite cheese. “Sorry about being so cheesy.”
You look at him, seeing the embarrassed look on his face. His cheeks were red, unable to make eye contact with you but smiling anyway. “Well, now I don’t have to go grocery shopping,” you joke, him laughing along with you, “Vince, I love this.”
“And I love you.”
You can’t help the smile on your face, staring into his green eyes as his expression mirrors yours. “Really? I mean, I knew,” you explain, “But I didn’t think you’d say it. Why now?”
He smiles at you, taking your hands in his. “Because Nikki shouldn’t have to tell you she loves you because I can’t.”
“You’re welcome!” you hear Nikki yell from your room, both of you laughing.
“Oh my god,” he lets out at her obvious eavesdropping, his eyes closed, biting his bottom lip. “It’s not fair to you that you told me how you felt and I couldn’t tell you how I really felt.”
“Vince, you don’t have to apologize,” you try to tell him.
“No, no. I do,” he says, dropping your hands and cupping your face. His thumb traces along your cheekbones as he keeps going. “I chose shitty girls before you, and them hurting me ending up hurting you. I love you, and it shouldn’t have taken me so long to say it. You’re the only one I’ve ever really loved.” He pulls you in for a kiss, soft and sweet.
“I love you, too.”

Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 2,778
Disclaimers: Smut, Language, HELLA FLUFF, Bakugo being a fucking shit but what else is new, this was a request, @im-blossoming I hope you like it! Sorry it took so long!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Y/n-chan! Help me study please?” Kaminari pleaded, immediately breaking out the puppy dog eyes. His hands clasped together as he peered down at you.
 You cocked your head to the side, “I thought Kacchan was going to help you and Eiji?” You pondered aloud.
 Too loud maybe, because you gained the attention of some of your classmates.
 “Dumbass! I told you to stop calling me that!” Bakugo screamed, fixing his eyes on you with an annoyed glare.
 “Bakugo man, stop screaming at a girl. That’s not manly at all.” Kirishima piped in.
 “Shut up shitty hair! It’s not manly for you to get shit grades either!” He growled back, the palm of his hands crackling with explosions.
 “You see Y/n-chan! I don’t want that guy teaching me! Please;” Kaminari all but cried to you.
 You were smiling in amusement during the entire exchange. Your friendship with these three was strange to say the least. You were a sweet girl, an all around genuine person, and let’s not forget smart, incredibly smart.
 It’s unclear how the boys had gravitated towards you at the beginning of school, but you didn’t care. If anything, being around them was always fun, for you at least.
 “Why don’t we all study together?” you suggested thoughtfully, “we can meet up in the dining room after dinner?”
 “I don’t want to study with you dumbass.” Bakugo grumbled.
 “Do you not like me Suki?” You pouted playfully.
 Bakugo growled, his red eyes turning into slits. “Don’t call me that either!”
 “What do you want me to call you then?” you frowned. Midoriya got to call him Kacchan, you didn’t see why you couldn’t either.
 “If you’re going to call me by my first name than say it properly you fucking idiot!” He snapped.
 “Fine Katsuki.” You rolled your eyes playfully at him. “Is that better?”
 He grumbled under his breath, crossing his arms over his chest and looking away from you.
 It was now time for lunch, all four of you walking out of the classroom, still discussing the plan for later tonight.
 Unbeknownst to you, a certain pair of heterochromia eyes had been watching your every movement.
 Todoroki hadn’t realized that he had been frowning the entire time he was watching you interact with your guys’ classmates.
 “You okay Todoroki-kun?” Midoriya asked, seeing the troubled expression on his friend’s face.
 “Yeah.” he said simply as he followed him out of the classroom and into the cafeteria.
 The entire lunch he was silent, his mind wandering, but always coming back to what perplexed him the most: you.
 It wasn’t like you guys were together, he wasn’t your keeper and you weren’t his either. He liked to think that you guys were closer than the three morons that you hung out with.
 But then why have you never asked him to study together? Why do you call those guys by their first names but still refer to him by his surname?
 His frown deepened.
 Before he even realized it, it was already past dinner time, and right now he was watching you and Kaminari work on English together. Bakugo and Kirishima had their own topic of studying to cover, but you all sat at one of the tables, books and papers scattered around you.
 You were too engrossed in the lesson plan to even notice the intensity of Todoroki’s stare, but Bakugo felt it immediately, his eyes snapping up with a glare.
 “Why do you keep looking at us icy hot!?” He screamed, catching your attention. You looked up from the sentence you were helping Kaminari with, and made eye contact with blue and grey eyes.
 You tilted your head to the side in curiosity, lips parting slightly as you stared at the beautiful man staring right back at you.
 “I’m sorry Todoroki, are we being too loud? Do you want us to move to another room?” You asked softly; ignoring the loud protest of Bakugo not wanting to “move from his fucking spot.”
 You watched as his lips pursed, a crease forming between his eyebrows.
 Cute, you thought, vaguely aware of the blush that was creeping up on your face.
 You had hoped that your crush on Todoroki wasn’t obvious. You had seen him at the entrance of U.A. on your first day of classes. You had thought he was incredibly good-looking. You had already formed a physical attraction to him, but it wasn’t until you had partnered up with him for a school project, and then as partners for most of your hero training courses, that you began to actually develop feelings for him.
 You had a large amount of  respect for Todoroki. You admired his quick wit, his strength, his always quiet and calculating demeanor, and most importantly, his strive to become the best hero.
 It wasn’t that you didn’t want to become the best hero either, you had worked hard to get to where you were now, and you still had a long way to go. It was just that you admired the fact that he wanted to be better. You thought that he was already perfect, but his goals, and his determination to be better than his father, to be better than All Might himself, well, that motivated you too.
 “You’re fine.” was his short response, his eyes flickering back to his book.
 You sighed softly to yourself, you had always thought that you two were close, at least closer than how he was with most people. But, he was just so cold towards you sometimes. You couldn’t help but wonder if you actually annoyed him and he was just being nice by letting you think you guys were actually friends.
 “I’m going to go make some tea, do you guys want any?” you asked quietly, standing up. You tried not letting your deflated feelings show.
 The three boys at your table chimed in with requests from what they wanted from the kitchen, none of which involved tea. But you didn’t say anything else and quietly left the room.
 Bakugo’s eyes shifted over to Todoroki; another scowl deepening into his face. “Oi, half and half bastard, do you like Y/n?”
 This caught Kaminari and Kirishima’s attention, immediately turning their attention to Todoroki.
 Todoroki frowned, staring back at Bakugo. “Yeah. Y/n is a nice person. She’s strong too. And smart.”
 “That’s not what I meant icy hot!” Bakugo growled, growing further annoyed with his daft classmate.
 “What did you mean then?” Todoroki asked.
 “Yeah Bakugo what did you mean?” Kirishima asked curiously. “Of course everyone likes Y/n-chan, she’s sweet and cute!”
 Todoroki’s eyes hardened at Kirishima’s statement. Something deep in his chest bubbling up; he didn’t like what Kirishima had said, while it was the truth, hearing someone else say those words aloud didn’t sit right with him.
 “I think what Bakugo is trying to ask: is if Todoroki wants to be more than friends with Y/n-chan.” Kaminari grinned, wiggling his eyebrows. “Well what do you think, Todoroki? Are you attracted to Y/n-chan?”
 Todoroki shifted in his seat uncomfortably; what did he think? The feelings you made him feel were too confusing. He wanted to be around you all the time, he didn’t like that you were always hanging out with those three, and he definitely didn’t like the fact that you never called him by his first name.
“I don’t know. She’s weird.” he said bluntly, but before he could finish you came by and slammed the tray of goodies down on the table, startling everyone.
 You had heard the last two exchanges; getting your hopes thinking that he would say that he did like you, just like you liked him.
 His response that he said definitely wasn’t the one you were hoping for. You could feel tears of hurt and frustration gathering at the corner of your eyes as you glared at Todoroki, startling him completely.
 You had never looked at him like that before.
 “If you think I’m so weird then you can find another sparring partner, stupid Todoroki;” you snapped angrily and stormed off to your dorm room, sniffling as you went.
 Everyone was still for a moment, not fully registering what happened until Kirishima finally spoke.
 “Don’t just sit there Todoroki! Go be a man and comfort her!”
 And he did.
 He raced towards your room, he wasn’t exactly sure what happened, but he didn’t like the way you looked at him, it made his stomach twist uneasily.
 He didn’t bother knocking, he opened your door abruptly. His stomach dropped as he saw your teary gaze found his eyes.
 His stomach twisted in guilt.
 Did his comment really make you fucking cry?
 “Go away Todoroki, I don’t want to see you right now.” you snapped, looking away as you rubbed the tears out of your eyes.
 “You’re crying.” he stated, the door closing behind him as he stepped closer to you.
 “No thanks to you.” you fired back. “Just go away.”
 “No.”
 “Go. If you didn’t want to be friends with me Todoroki you just had to say so.” You cried out angrily at him. “If you think I’m so weird, then why do you keep trying to talk to me?”
 Something inside of him snapped at the mention of his surname; the feelings he had been suppressing, the feelings he had no idea how to identify came flooding out.
 “Why do you call me that?” he asked abruptly.
 You raised your eyebrows incredulously. “It’s your name?”
 He frowned, stepping closer to you. You were now only an arms length away from each other, and he looked furious.
 “Why do you never call me by my first name? You call everyone else by their first name except for me? Why? Is it because you don’t think of me as your friend?” His voice was deep and husky.
 It felt like your heart was about to burst out of your chest, your tears were long forgotten about.
 But the adrenaline was still pumping, blood ringing in your ears and all those feelings you had suppressed about him began to bubble up; spilling from your lips. “Don’t think of you as a friend!? I don’t call you by your first name because I have so much respect for you Todoroki! You inspire me to be a better hero! I-I-I like you Todoroki! Since the day I met you I’ve liked you!”
 Fuck.
 You didn’t mean to confess, your hand was clutching your shirt above your heart, your eyes screwed tightly shut.
 It was quiet.
 Fuck, I messed up, you thought.
 “Todor-” something cold and soft slammed against your mouth.
 Your eyes flashed open as you had lost your balance from whatever force had come at you. But you didn’t fall.
 Instead, you felt strong arms wrap tight around your body. Cold fingers pressed into your jaw, and you felt something cold and wet wiggle its way into your mouth.
 Your eyes all but bulged out of your head.
 He was kissing you.
 Todoroki was fucking kissing you. And it felt good. You moaned into his mouth, melting against his strong body as you began to kiss him back. Your fingers tangling themselves into his hair, something that you had always dreamed about. You tugged gently at the locks near the nape of his neck.
 Todoroki groaned deep and low in his throat, his grip tightening on you. His lips moving urgently against yours. He moved until the back of your legs hit the edge of the bed, both of you folding down on top of it.
 He grabbed your left leg, having it wrap around his waist as he began exploring your body with greedy fingers.
 His left hand sliding up your shirt; warm, rough fingers moving against the soft skin of your ribs. Just stopping below the edge of your bra.
 “T-To-Todoroki, please,” you whimpered against his lips, moving away as you panted for air. His lips pressing hot open mouth kisses along your delicate jaw.
 You could feel his member growing harder against your leg.
 “Say my name.” he murmured softly against your skin, sliding his mouth to where it was on the outer shell of your ear. “I want to hear you say it.” he whispered, his tongue flicking out against the lobe of your ear.
 Your eyes all but rolled into the back of your head, your hips jutting out against his, causing a deep moan to escape his lips.
 “Sh-Sho-Shoto,” you moaned out as his hips pressed down into yours. “Please, touch me.”
That was all he had to hear. His fingers tugged to remove your shirt and then your pants until you were left in nothing but your bra and panties.
 He paused as he gazed down at you. Lips parting in awe and want.
 You were fucking beautiful. Spread out beneath him like this, your lips wet and swollen, your perfect tits heaving up and down as you struggled to catch your breath.
 His hands slid underneath your back, carefully pulling you forward into a sitting position as he moved to unhook your bra.
 He sat back, watching intently as your breasts spilled from the cups. Todoroki moaned softly as he moved forward and captured a taut nipple between his lips, carefully tugging and pulling at the sensitive bud, before switching to the other one.
 You moaned loudly, hips bucking up, looking for some kind of friction as he assaulted your breasts, leaving behind already forming bruises.
 He pulled away, moving to pull down your panties. Watching you carefully to make sure that it was okay, but when he heard no protests from you his eyes flickered down. He groaned at the site before him. Your pussy lips were dripping in arousal for him.Todoroki couldn’t help but lean in, swiping his tongue along your slit, collecting your wetness on the tip of his tongue.
 You sobbed out in pleasure as he began his new assault on your cunt. How was he so good at this? He had you writhing in pleasure as your climax approached, crying out his name loudly as you came.
 You didn’t notice the way he had stripped down until he softly touched your leg, causing your eyes to flutter open.
 And - oh fuck. He was beautiful. His muscle rippling as he settled down onto the bed, his skin glistening with sweat and his eyes held nothing but want and need.
 Your eyes moved lower, trembling at the gorgeous sight before you.
 His cock stood up painfully hard, his head already weeping with neglect.
 “Y/n,” he uttered your name softly, catching your attention as you met his gaze once again. This time though his expression was soft and gentle. “Can I have you?”
 Your heart squeezed in your chest. “Yes. Yes, you can take me Shoto.”
 Carefully he rubbed the head of his cock against your folds, before pushing in. You gasped loudly, your head thrown back as he entered you slowly before he bottomed out.
 Todoroki leaned down, supporting his weight with his forearms as he got comfortable on top of you before leaning down to kiss you again.
 This time it was sweet, soft and passionate as his mouth fitted perfectly against yours. And then he began to move his hips.
 Sliding perfectly and easily in and out of you, your walls velvet soft and hugging every ridge, every vein of his cock.
 The moans you both shared being swallowed down by your mouths still working together.
 “You’re perfect.” Todoroki breathed, moving to stare at your face twisting in pleasure. “Are you close?”
 You nodded urgently, you could feel your orgasm bubbling up once again. The pleasure rippling through your body, getting ready to snap open any second.
 His cold fingers reached down and began carefully rubbing your clit, his movements soft but firm.
 But that was all it took for you to come undone, unraveling beneath him hard and fast; crying out his name you felt him slide out of you, you watched as he gripped his member and pumped three times before spilling himself all over your stomach. His face twisted in pleasure, eyes screwed tightly shut as soft moans escaped his lips.
 His release was hot and sticky against your skin but neither of you cared as he leaned down and pressed another kiss to your lips.
 “You’re beautiful,” he murmured, drinking in the sight of you. “I like you too. Have since the moment I saw you too.”
You laughed softly, looking at him with the sweetest expression. “I hope you like me back Shoto, it would be a bit weird if you didn’t after all of this no?”
 He smiled slightly; “Yeah.”
Prey on the Heart
Summary: Valtor is on the hunt when his hound makes an unexpected discovery - Griffin is on the premises and defenseless against his rage over her betrayal. Valtor has to decide what catch he’s after - her head or their love. AU.
CW: Blood, dog bites, injury neglect, non-graphic violence and sex
This has been an outlined idea for almost 11 months. It was supposed to be an entry for Whumptober last year but I managed to turn it back into romance instead of torture somehow. I never got around to writing it unti today the universe conspired to bring it into existence and I am so happy to have finally finished it!
Love Again by Dua Lipa is giving me feels for this AU so give it a listen if you want.
The tufts of yellowed grass barely rustled under his feet as he followed the hound south. A little further and they'd leave the borders of the Coven's estate for the uninhabitable wasteland his mothers hadn't bothered to purchase even at the low cost of Obsidian land.
The rainless summer had left the otherwise infertile ground dry and cracked, no prints marring it's hardened surface. The hound was relying purely on her animal instincts and despite the boost from his magic, his senses couldn't catch up. He was barely keeping up with Violet herself glancing around for a trace on the foliage of what she'd sniffed.
He caught a strangled scream without the need to strain his ears. It was loud and clear despite the attempt to muffle it. He'd thought it was an animal the hound had shot after but that scream... It was a human voice. A familiar voice.
He followed the sound, steps hurried and heavy on the ground to chase away any game in the vicinity but he'd have his prize regardless. Unless he was dreaming or under one of mother Lysslis' illusion spells.
He called the dog back to lead him to where she'd left her victim. He'd seen Violet do her thing under Lysslis' training. Whenever she got her teeth into something, it wasn't getting away before she let go. And it wasn't getting away after that either.
Violet's teeth had a wet red tint to them, muzzle damp with blood and saliva as her nostrils expanded voraciously with every breath from the heavy copper smell. She circled him frantically and dashed forward only to run back to him in an attempt to prompt him to catch up with her speed. At least she was happy with her find.
An unusual circle of trees formed a perfectly lined up clearing in the forest. Stepping inside it left him face to face with a lone tree in the middle that was keeled over and charred. It must have been stricken by a lightning but its sturdy, forked roots had grounded it deep in the soil to make it the only thing standing in the clearing.
Leaning on the other side of it, partially concealed by its thick trunk, was none other than Griffin. Her hands trembled as she tightened the knot on the bandage she'd wrapped around her bleeding calf. She hissed when the dirty rag she'd torn from the hemline of her tattered and muddied dress constricted the tender wound Violet had left in her wake. And to think Griffin had been the one who'd gifted him the hound when she'd still been a pup that had fit in the palm of his hand. Valtor had even named her after Griffin, the striking shade of her hair coloring everything from his sketches to the very dreams his subconscious concocted. If she hadn't left so soon after presenting him with the puppy, Violet may have remembered her scent. Not that that would have given her a chance against Lysslis' conditioning of all hunting dogs, including Valtor's personal hound.
Griffin's eyes pinned the hound where it was pacing from one side to another behind Valtor's legs with her tail wagging and her labored breaths filling the silence of his own lungs. The sight of him had Griffin's whole body tensing as her hands hit the tree bark behind her back and she scrambled to her feet.
Her movements were lagging from the pain and panic dripping from her hunched form. Her hair fell down her back matted with red where she'd brushed it back with bloodied hands. Large chunks of unrefined obsidian crystals were strapped to her wrists with clumsy threads of silver into bracelets that ran up her arms under her sleeves.
She'd made those herself–in a hurry–her magic pulling the crystals and metal straight from the core of the planet. They would have impeded any other witch considering his own mothers' magic was notably subdued by the large deposits of obsidian under the planet's surface but not her. Crystals were one of her areas of expertise–and the reason why she'd walked into his life–yet even her knowledge had failed her along with her luck. She'd made it to the very edge of the territory controlled and owned by the Coven under the protection of the black crystals she'd adorned herself with to ward off dark magic but still not far enough.
It had been fear cutting off her magic to prevent her from fashioning herself a bandage the way she'd crafted her protection charms. Her golden eyes were wide like pits of inextinguishable fire and her chest wasn't moving to push the ample cleavage her dress left exposed into the forefront of his mind. She'd had an easier time drawing breath with the weight of his head nestled over her ribcage, over her heart beating steadily with the promise of her presence.
Valtor's step forward echoed like a gunshot in her body. Her back pressed into the tree, muscles pulled taut with compressed energy readying her to pounce.
"Run." His first word to her. He could have lost a bet that it would be a vile curse in a lost language only she could understand. "I dare you." She'd turned her back and left unprompted. If she still abode by that logic, then she'd have to stay.
Griffin swallowed. "You're going to hunt me down like an animal?" Her teeth gritted as she strained against her eyes slipping from his form.
His fingers clenched to white around the cold metal of his shotgun. Her jaw would have been dust in his grip where he wanted it to tip her head back and pin her gaze with his. She'd forced him to endure far greater pain being the one left behind. She hadn't earned the right to writhe and scream in agony.
"Violet here is an animal," he extended his hand and the hound pressed her head into his open palm. She always obeyed his calls, never running off where she wouldn't hear him and come back. "She is loyal and dependable which is more than I can say about you." He may have named the dog after Griffin but he'd raised Violet to never follow in her footsteps.
"So I am less than an animal to you, too?" Her gaze darted to the dog and back – to the piece of herself she hadn't stolen from him.
Valtor frowned, hand stilling between Violet's ears to make her rub it in his fingers insistently. He ignored her.
"What do you mean to me too?" Once again Griffin took precedence. Over his hunt, over his dog, over his own heart. Only his stomach sank from the prediction of what he'd hear from her mouth.
"You think I came here on a picnic with only the dress on my back?" Griffin stood steady on her feet, her tenacious nature breathing life into a smirk he had to bite back.
He hadn't given thought to the circumstances of their meeting. Her aching form in front of his eyes was everything. One blink and she'd melt away, swept up into another one of the portals the locations of which she was best at estimating. Indeed her presence on top of her disheveled state posed multiple questions he hadn't paid mind to. He was making it too easy for her to deceive him again.
"Your mothers chased me down and electrocuted me to the point of nearly frying my organs," her arms crossed over her belly to raise alarms in his head. If anything gave him the strength to best mother Tharma, it would be the rage over touching what was his. Griffin was a central part of that even if revenge was all that was left between them. That and the truth she spoke. "They kept me locked up for weeks in a tiny shoe box where I couldn't even stand up straight and only let me out last night. Right as darkness fell for me to read on the star-filled sky that it was the first day of hunting season."
There was disdain in her voice instead of the fear everyone else held for the way his mothers took beauty and strength and twisted it into despair. They had taken her love of astronomy and turned it into the herald of her death sentence. Just like they'd repopulated the area around their estate with hunting game only to have their fill of murdering unsuspecting animals.
Griffin's eyes burned so fiercely he half expected the tree behind her to catch fire. "They let me out to be your prey." And she'd dashed for the quickest route out of there. She hadn't come back for him.
"You betrayed me."
Violet sat down on her hind legs, body taut like a string and tail beating harshly into the dust. She would leap at the smallest shift in him.
Griffin was like a rock in front of him. His fire wouldn't touch her and his bullets would bounce back at him. "They are enslaving people and I didn't know I was helping them."
He hadn't told her. All he could have given her had been the illusion of a choice. She never would've picked him if he'd let his mothers force her to lay the world at their feet. It had been the only chance the two of them had had to be together.
"I had to put an end to it."
"You betrayed me!" Valtor raised the shotgun, his hands shaking too violently to aim it more precisely than just in Griffin's general direction as he stalked closer. Violet was growling on his left to keep his flank safe. "I gave you my everything. You were all I had and you left!"
All the riches flowing into Obsidian under his mothers' direction and Griffin's accurate calculations of opening portals to other planets were resources for the Coven's needs, not for his personal use. He wasn't even allowed in certain rooms of the mansion. The magic in his very veins had been embedded there by his mothers' efforts and lessons. Griffin had been the one building a little home with him in the room they'd come to share, she'd been the one putting a heartbeat in his palms only to leave him clutching empty sheets with a cold blade sticking out of his chest.
"Bursting your heart into atoms is exactly what you deserve." He stalked closer, the cool barrel of his shotgun and Violet's razor-sharp teeth were his only defense. The obsidian on Griffin's wrists weakened his magic and the shine of her eyes had obliterated his resolve to chase her down even from his memories.
Griffin's eyes hardened, hands balling into fists. "If you're going to shoot me, do it!" she grabbed the shotgun and pressed it into her bare skin.
The force threw him off balance and he stumbled forward, pushing the stiff metal into her sternum while her breath invaded his mouth with their faces inches apart. "Do not. Tempt me," he growled, his fingers twitching from her audacity to wrap around her throat and force more breath from her.
"Do it!" Griffin was still gripping the shotgun close to her heaving chest unafraid of the fire that could burst from the contact. "I knew this–seeing you again–would be the end of me. But if taking the shot is what will take your pain away, then I'm ready to go. As long as it will let you live." Her eyes lost focus and her head lulled, a small smile tugging at her lips and his heartstrings as her gaze dropped to Violet.
The dog was pacing behind him to no reason or direction. Her nose was lowered into the dirt in defeat.
Valtor forced Griffin's head back with the barrel of his shotgun until their eyes were locked together. "Do you think I'm that dumb? That I'll believe you after all your lies?" He had to watch out for the hands. One wrong move and they'd be in his chest again. Or his would be in her hair under the clink of his forgotten shotgun to draw a moan out of her that would melt him in a puddle at her feet.
"It doesn't matter what you believe, what either one of us believes." Vulnerability was sealed in her eyes like they were amber preserving history. Bullets wouldn't work on them. Shattering them would only spill the truth of his own wrongdoings. "It will not change the fact that I love you." A gasp came – from him or from her. "You can cut me open and reach inside me to feel it if you need to. It will still be there once my heart has stopped. Not even the planet can absorb it."
His hands shook as the shotgun trailed back between her breasts. The dry ground would soak up her blood instead of water and the forest would claim her body but the energy pouring from her wouldn't disappear in the well in the planet's core. Obsidian absorbed negativity from all over the universe to cleanse it and Griffin had thought it fair to trade protection for resources borrowed from other planets when it had little to no of its own. But she was offering her life to him for nothing in return. She was offering the purity of her love and that wasn't something the planet could protect from or swallow.
Valtor licked his lips. His mouth watered in her proximity for her to plant her deception into it. Yet his tongue hardly moved with his words in the breeze her breath was on his taste buds. "You're playing mind games. This is nothing more than manipulation." She could be an inch from his face and hop into a portal to the other end of the universe in the blink of an eye. And he hadn't been able to follow despite the pull in his heart.
"Nothing's stopping you from pulling the trigger. Or taking your hunting knife and carving out my heart." The blade weighed on his chest from its secret pocket as her voice reverberated through him. "Go ahead! Eat it like I always knew you would. And once its in your system, so will be my love." Her hand slid down the barrel of the shotgun, her fingers bathing his in their heat. "It will be a part of you, flowing through your veins and making you mine forever. Death by your hand does not scare me. I'll never die inside you."
The metal burned in his hand. Or that was the love for her that had never gone out. Not even at the look of the vast blackness of the sky where she could have disappeared forever. "You know I won't-"
"I know you want to." Griffin's hand slipped on top of his, colder than the blade of his knife over his heart. "But you won't. You pull that trigger and you lose me forever. You're not going to cause yourself that pain. Not even after I ran away." Her skin was like stone grinding against his to chip away his resistance. She knew him to his selfish core. Having her love forever inside him where he wouldn't be able to touch it wouldn't be enough even if she wouldn't be able to leave again.
"How could you bring my heart back after you fled with it?" It was right there clasped between her teeth. A kiss would free it and tugging at it with all his might would rip it to shreds. It was a miracle Griffin hadn't chewed it to bits when Violet's teeth had sunk into her flesh.
"Because we belong to each other. With each other." Her heart trembled in her pulse point for him to see. "No portal between worlds can change that. Not the one that took me away and not the one that brought me back."
How could he kill her when simply hating her would pull her out of his arms? Taking a step back would make him crumble under his self-loathing. He couldn't be the one to take her away from himself. Not when she was right there like a vision. One only she could make come true.
"Would you have ever come back if my mothers hadn't dragged you here?"
"Does it matter?" her voice was like a gunshot in his ears, like the weapon in his hand had gone off pressed into his own chest rather than hers.
The metal clanked as it hit the ground where he threw it and a shot echoed through the forest on accident that had Violet barking frantically. It could have been Griffin's magic wringing the bullet from his shotgun to drop him dead – he didn't care. His fingers had the freedom to tangle in her purple tresses again and a moan greeted him on her lips when he pulled her to his mouth.
No. It didn't matter. It didn't matter what could have happened when she was in his arms, chest pressing into his with her ragged breaths. She returned his kisses, teeth sliding over his lips to mark her territory like her life depended on it although she could pick up his shotgun and leave a hole in his chest. All she had to do to get away with murder was part with several hairs and blink back the tears from having them torn away in his death grip. Yet, all she was grasping at were the lapels of his coat to hold him in the reach of her kisses. She was still giving him everything she had with the threat to her life gone. It was all the proof he could want.
Her legs wrapped around his waist as he hoisted her against the tree. The bandage on her calf was wet with blood under his fingers but she was pulling him closer like she'd lost her mind to love and couldn't understand it was impossible to push herself into him more. Her magic would be no use for healing in her state and his would be no use at all.
Her skin was still soft despite the odd chilliness that had fallen over it and broke under his teeth on her collar bone to let him have her blood. Her wet flesh welcomed him as he entered her once he'd pulled all the fabric of her dress and underwear out of his way. His fingers dipped under her neckline to find her breast but brushed over dried mud instead. The rough surface of confusion threw him back into a questioning stare aimed at her.
"My chest was pierced by the Obsidian belladonna your mothers pushed me on." Obsidian threads from the land ran through the plant to claim each part of it and give it a crown of crystal-edged petals. The black crust was like a blade that cut through the flesh to release the poison of the belladonna directly into the bloodstream. Only Griffin's magic had saved her life from the toxins rushing from the roots to the petals of the plant. "The blood from the wound would draw the dog to me for sure in case my deep frozen state interfered with my scent." She didn't have to tell him it had been mother Belladonna's idea and magic to do all of that to her.
Valtor ran his hands over every inch of her in his reach. Her skin had remained cold after a full night of running. He had refrained form startling her with his magic but the heat of it passed from him into her to leave her body all his to claim with Belladonna's frost retreating from it. Griffin was burning now, hot moans dropping from her mouth with every thrust as she reached a hand under her dress to stroke them both further into the heights of pleasure. His open-mouthed kisses to her neck let him feel every breath and his tongue leaving a warm, wet trail over the column of her throat had her gasping. He'd cover her all in himself to erase the horror they'd been subjected to.
"We have to get you out of here." His mothers would finish the hunt themselves if he came back to the mansion without a trophy for their walls.
"Get the dog out of here." Griffin's voice wavered as she moved her palm under his shirt to brace herself on his abs. She let out a shuddering sigh, eyelids falling over the suns of his world. "We don't need public. She already saw enough." Griffin licked her lips, head falling back to thud against the tree trunk lightly with every push of his hips into her. Her back would be bruised with reminders of the movements they'd shared like they were one.
Valtor's whistle had Violet's attention and he sent her to keep the perimeter clear. His mothers wouldn't dirty their hands right away and she could hold her own against any other Coven member to buy him and Griffin time to talk.
He'd spend eternity watching Griffin's face scrunched up in concentration as she grabbed at her pleasure, hips matching his motions, but they had no more than a couple hours. "We need a plan."
Griffin knit her eyebrows at his interruption. "I had one right before they dragged me out of my life. I found a small island of pure amethyst orbiting an uninhabited planet." Energy currents turned all kinds of crystal structures into mini heavenly bodies. Someone with her talents had no trouble finding all the curiosities of space. "I was going to go there. Live on the planet and meditate on the island to clear my thoughts and overcome my grief." Amethyst was good for that. Just the shade of her hair cleansed his mind from agony to leave him clutching harder at the purple strands to keep them from slipping through his fingers.
"I wasn't dead." Abandoned but not dead. Not yet. He'd retreated into the dreams of a sky set ablaze in violet by a rising sun. They'd become his poison and his cure until she'd come back to put his heart back together.
Griffin's eyes snapped open, tears gleaming all over their gold. "I was dead to you."
"Not dead. Never dead." His fingers slid over the top of her breast to the wound she'd closed with mud to make her the one shivering. Her cold, lifeless body stuffed in his mind would force him apart at the seams.
"I was hoping there I would come up with a strategy for future action," Griffin continued to distract him. She rolled her hips into him and gave him a moan to ensure her success.
"Good." He leaned in to pant against her ear. "You continue according to plan then." His mothers would never look for her there. The only resource they'd ever pursued was human lives. His job had been to keep her distracted so she'd do the groundwork unknowingly.
"What about you?" He could hear her frowning over the pain of her nails digging into his abs.
He grabbed her wrist and pressed it harder into him so she'd be branded over his body. "I can't come. They'd put everything into finding us. It'd be more dangerous."
Griffin pushed her body flush against him, all of her weight falling on his muscles with her back barely brushing the tree. Her teeth were gliding over his neck but she pierced him with her voice instead. "You can't go back without my corpse."
He kissed her forcefully, tongue stuffing her mouth to trap the words there. They'd suffocate with no oxygen and Griffin yielded to him for a moment, pulling him closer until they were out of breath.
They fell back on the tree and a whimper was forced from her lips. Their mouths were just an inch away, breath mingling between them in perfect harmony. He had to be the one to speak first and keep the magic alive.
"You left once because there were people who needed help." Because he'd lied to her that that wasn't the case to keep her to himself. Her heart was bigger than his and he'd tried to cut it down in fear of the difference between them.
"Valtor-"
"I'm not losing you again." Because her heart was so big, he had a home. And she could give the same to others, too. "Once you have a plan, we end this once and for all and you'll never leave my side again." He had to let go of her hand to slip his fingers between her legs and drive her wild with his love for her.
Griffin was the one grabbing his wrist now. "I don't want to leave you with them again." Her fingers clasped his in a firm grip despite the trembling of her body. "They'll pay you back for not bringing their plan for us to fruition."
"They can't. Without you they need someone else to open portals for them." He'd picked up enough from the time they'd spent together to do that job without giving her perfect results. No one else could fill that role for his mothers' plan and the punishment for letting Griffin escape hadn't been nearly severe enough thanks to his usefulness. "You already gave me a weapon against them." He stroked his fingers over her arousal. It was only his place to be the source of her shaking. She deserved all the pleasure she could stand.
"I've made you a weapon for them," Griffin arched into his touch to escape the guilt she was trying to pile on herself.
Valtor thrust into her with all the vigor she'd given him to make her eyes roll in the back of her head and her thighs quiver around him. "They won't get to use me long but you're the only one who can find out how to stop them. You have to be protected." If his mothers wanted her dead instead of brainwashed and turning Obsidian into their empire of slavery, then she was dangerous enough to bring them down. "I'll come for you. Now come for me."
"Valtor."
It was not a scream of passion. It was an uttered love confession that made him weak in the knees. Supporting her was the only thing keeping him upright through his weakness. She was still bleeding – not just from her calf, but from her chest, too. If having his heart hadn't mended the wound he'd left on hers with his lies, he had to give her more. He had to send her away to heal so that the world could become a home for them again.
Day 10: Used Tea Bags - Javier Pena
Tumblr media
William ‘Ironhead’ Miller liked numbers. His whole life since leaving the military was run down to the exact second the way he wanted it too. He would wake up at 0600 daily, stretch for eight minutes, down his first cup of coffee, and go for an eight mile run through the park. Then he would return home, take a five minute shower, get dressed, drink a smoothie, fill his tumblr with coffee, and leave for the base at 0730 sharp.
Every single day was the same. But, that’s what someone with as many demons as he had needed. The structure and security of the same routine. Not one minute unaccounted for. Until the day he met her.
It was a chilly November morning when he first noticed her. She had on a black leggings, a maroon crewneck sweatshirt, black ankle boots, and hair in a messy bun atop her head. She was sitting at one of the unoccupied benches near the Veterans statue, reading aloud a book to a golden retriever lying quietly with her head in her owner's lap.
He faltered for a moment, and one minute became two, became three and when he looked down at his watch he cursed to himself. He was behind schedule. When he looked back up they were gone. He turned each direction frantically looking for the girl and the dog but they were nowhere to be seen. He wondered for a moment if he had only imagined it before the beeping of his watch drew his attention and he picked up the pace to make up for the lost time. Lost time, what a novel concept for a person who counted everything in his life.
The next morning when he entered the park he couldn’t help but look for them as he ran around the path. Keeping his eyes open for the golden retriever and her alluring owner. Will couldn’t help the pang of disappointment at missing them again. The routine remained the same day in and out for another week before Will began to give up hope about seeing them again. On Saturday after his run he came home and left at exactly 0730 again but this time he was meeting his old army buddies for breakfast at a diner across town.
The diner looked old fashioned amongst the new and shiny chrome buildings that had begun to pop up around town but it wasn’t the outside that mattered. Will walked in and the bells tinkled on the door to notify the wait staff, and he nodded at the familiar faces before finding his friends. He slid into the worn, cracked leather of the booth next to his brother, shaking the other two men's hands across the table.
The waitress came over and brought him a steaming mug of coffee, two packets of sugar, and one creamer before going back over to her other customers. Frankie pointed to the cup before back at Will, “you come here way too often if they know exactly how you take your coffee.”
“Every Saturday,” Will tells him smiling as he prepares his coffee, taking a sip of the liquid gold, “Gladys knows just the way I like my coffee, and my breakfast. Why ruin a good thing by going somewhere else?”
Frankie laughs at him, “Some people actually like to go out and try new things. Are you still doing the same routine every day and doing that counting thing?”
Will only nods before he’s interrupted by Gladys who takes their orders, not even bothering to ask Will before she goes off to put their order into the kitchen. “Thank you Glady!” Will shouts at her and she raises a hand in acknowledgment.
“So how the hell have you guys been?” Santiago asks over the rim of his mug.
Benny fills them in on his training, and his new girlfriend he met at a fight a few months ago. Frankie tells them all about the house he just bought and is slowly renovating and shows them some new pictures of his daughter Juliette, who just turned three the past month. Frankie made the single father life look flawless. Santiago was in town for the next two months on break from down in Columbia where he’d been helping the local military take down a drug lord. All of them had something new to share, something exciting, except Will.
“So what about you Will?” Santi gestures to him as they all dig into their breakfast.
Will cuts himself another piece of pancake off for himself before running it through the syrup, “The same shit as usual, run, work, eat, sleep. On Saturdays I come here for breakfast and on Tuesday and Thursday I help Benny with training and Friday night is usually fight night. Besides that nothing is new.”
“Youshouldgetadog” the words jumble together out of Benny’s mouth as he tries to talk through the French toast pouring from his mouth.
“Damn it brother chew your food and then talk,” Will laughs.
Benny swallows before trying again, “I said, you should get a dog.”
“A dog? Why the hell would I get a dog?” he asks.
“Just hear me out brother, you love routines right? You run every morning and it seems to me that your a little lonely, a dog could go running with you, and keep you company.”
Will contemplates the idea for a moment and his thoughts can't help but go back to the beautiful woman from the park with the golden retriever. “Yeah, maybe… do we even have any pet shops around here?”
“Fuck pet shops,” Frankie tells him, “you need to go to the humane society and get a rescue dog, they are the best. Juli and I will even go with you, she would love to see all the dogs. How about 1300 today?”
Will thinks for a moment before agreeing, “ok...but just to look. I don’t know if I am ready for a dog yet.”
“Ok I’ll meet you there with Juli and we can go look at the dogs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you go and fall in love with one and take it home today.”
Will scoffs, “Sure.”
When Will pulls his black 2014 Ford truck into the parking lot he feels slightly overwhelmed by all the animals running about. There is a large fenced in yard with exactly fifteen dogs of various shapes and sizes. When Frankie pulled into the spot next to him, he began to feel more at ease with a familiar face and when Juli came running full speed at him he couldn’t help the smile that broke across his face.
“Uncle WIll!!” Juli screamed tackling him into a hug.
He swung her up into his arms and she squealed, “hello sunshine! How’s my favorite girl doing? Are you keeping your daddy busy?”
“Of course! Daddy told me we're gonna help you find a puppy today? Can we get one too daddy?” She leans back in Wills arms and pouts at her father who crosses his arms.
“I get the impression you and her had this discussion before you came today?” Will asks laughing at the exasperated expression on Frankie's face.
“More than once,” Frankie nods to him before taking the toddler back, “Sweetie we talked about this, we are not getting a dog today, just Uncle Will.”
Her face morphs into a pout and both men can feel the beginning of a tantrum coming so they deflect, “Let’s go sunshine! Don’t you want to see all the dogs?” Will leads the way into the shelter and when the bell dings as he crosses the threshold he stops. Frankie runs into his back before pushing the rest of the way inside.
Sitting at a worn desk is the woman from the park. She’s wearing overalls with a white shirt covered in pink and yellow flowers. Her hair is pulled into a bun on top of her head but three long strands have slipped out and are dangling in front of her face. She’s wearing dark rimmed glasses, and has her nose buried in a book. On the ground under the desk, sticks out a wet black nose of a golden retriever snoring.
Will coughs lightly to draw her attention and she snaps her head up and seems slightly startled. “Oh hello! I-” she puts her bookmark in her book and the dog rises to its feet, noticing the new arrivals, “Welcome to the Dog House, uhm how can - how can I help you today? She stumbles over her words, and a blush rises up her neck.
“Hhh-uhm hi,” Will’s arm rises up and he scratches the back of his head, “Dog...I’m looking for a dog.” He can’t keep his eyes off her. The girl he had spent the last couple weeks thinking about, was right in front of him.
She giggles, “Well then you’ve come to the right place, I’m Andy, you can follow me.”
Will follows her like a lost puppy...no pun intended. Frankie just watches the two of them, smiling to himself. It’s obvious that Will likes this girl the way he’s acting if only he could see her looking at him the same way. Frankie keeps his thoughts to himself and follows behind the two.
“What kind of dog are you looking for? Something big? Small? Athletic? Lazy? We have all kinds here.” she asks, gesturing around to the cages as she leads them to a small enclosed area outside.
“I like to run, in Aveley Park over on 140th street, and I would like a dog to run with. I’m Will by the way,” he offers her his hand. When they touch they both feel a surge of electricity and they don’t let go, continuing to shake hands until Frankie not so subtly clears his throat.
She blushes deep red, and quickly drops his hand smiling shyly at him, “That’s where I like to go with Benny! We go almost every morning for a walk and then I usually read. My sisters have been in town the last couple weeks so we’ve been going in the evenings lately but they’re gone now so maybe I will see you some morning.”
“Oh uhmm, whose Benny?” Will asks, he didn’t notice a boyfriend last time he saw her.
“Oh my dog!” she gestures to the dog that has been slowly following between them.
From behind, Frankie lets out a snort. Will glares at him before meeting your confused expression. “Benny is my brother's name…I guess he and the dog have some things in common. My brother is kind of like a lovable golden retriever.”
She laughs out loud, and it’s the most beautiful sound he’s ever heard and he’s desperate to hear her laugh again. “Well maybe your Benny and my Benny should meet someday.”
“I would like that,” Will tells her, smiling.
The two just stand there smiling at each other like two lovesick fools when Frankie puts down Juli who's been squirming in his arms. She toddles over to the dog and begins gently petting his head, his eyes close and his tail wags and everyone laughs watching the adorable toddler and the dog.
“Ok,” she slaps her hands together, “athletic dogs, good for running…”
“Maybe one a little older?” Will hesitantly asks, “I don’t run as fast as I used to.”
“You know I think I have the perfect dog for you,” she walks over to the kennel and comes back with a gorgeous chocolate lab. Will drops to his knee and gestures for the dog to come and sniff him and he does so without a second thought.
“What’s his name?” Will asks looking up at her.
“Tom.”
Will freezes and in his peripheral he sees Frankie frozen too, both of their eyes are on the dog. “What’s his name?” Will whispers.
“His name is Tom, they found him wandering around six months ago, they think someone left him. He’s house trained, and very well behaved. We-what’s wrong? You both look like you’ve seen a ghost…” She looks between Will and Frankie.
Frankie sniffs, “our old army buddy, he passed away a few years ago...his name was Tom.”
“Oh...oh I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to bring up any bad memories.”
“I’ll take him,” Will tells her quickly, “how do I adopt him?”
“Oh that’s wonderful! Come inside with me and we will get the paperwork all filled out, you can pay the $25 fee and he’s yours,” she places a leash around Tom and hands him to Will. When their hands brush he burns from her touch and she pulls her hand back. It’s not one sided. Juli and Frankie follow behind. Juli is more excited then everyone when Uncle Will tells her the dog is coming home with him. Just thirty minutes later and Will is the proud owner of a new dog. Frankie takes Juli outside to strap her into the car seat and head home.
“I hope I’m not too forward, but maybe one morning we could go running together...I go for a walk there every morning like I said but for the right partner I could be persuaded to start running in the mornings.”
“Actually...I would like to walk the dog with you tomorrow morning if you're free... it’s hard to get to know someone when running...then maybe I could take you out for breakfast?” Will feels as nervous as the first time he gave a speech.
“Yes,” she doesn’t hesitate, “yes, I would like that very much.” She slips a piece of paper from her back pocket with her phone number on it, “I was kind of hoping you would ask. I wrote it as soon as you decided on the dog.”
He laughs before taking the paper from her fingers, sliding the number into his pocket. He gently grasps her hand and presses a light kiss to her knuckles. “I can’t wait till tomorrow morning,” he tells her before walking backwards out the door.
Frankie has already left with Juli and he loads Tom into the front seat of the truck, before getting into the driver's seat and buckling his seat belt. He pulls out onto the road and sits at the stop sign, Tom crawls across the seat and places his head in Will’s lap. He puts his head gently, before pulling out to go home, thinking about tomorrow with one beautiful girl, and two dogs.
Chapter 1 —
⋯✰⋯
"Book."
"Gain!"
Bisky's eyes shined like stars as a smooth blue gemstone appeared in front of her. You could spot tears of hers spring up as she cradled the glittering rock like it was the most precious thing in the world.
"What should I name it? Blue-chan? Planet-chan?" she gushed, bouncing on the balls of her feet. You stifled a laugh, catching a glimpse of Killua's dumbfounded expression. If one thing were true, it's that he does not understand women.
While Gon and Killua endured Bisky's brutal training during Greed Island, you had grown to like her. Despite her being 45 years older than you, you imagined she was the closest thing to what a big sister would be like. Or maybe a mom? You wouldn't know.
Unfortunately, you weren't special enough to escape her unforgiving training either. Bisky knew no mercy. While training their physical bodies, she also trained the trio's nen abilities.
Gon developed his special punch move by using the rock, paper, scissors of Chinese martial arts. Killua learned how to better channel his electricity, though Bisky had looked concerned when he first demonstrated it to her. You couldn't blame her. Killua's ability to withstand electricity only came from years of shock torture, and you noticed how he rarely mentions the fact that he still feels the pain. You caught on to it the night you watched his Heaven's Arena match, remembering his voice floating to the stands.
"𝘐'𝘮 𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘐𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘰 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘦. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘐 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯. 𝘐𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘴."
Your heart clenched for him every time you remember this fact. He has a tendency to hide his pain, in order to not burden his friends.
Then there's you, who Bisky took upon herself to help.
Since the day Wing opened your nen pores and declared you a Manipulator, you practiced your nen with Gon and Killua daily. When the time came to decide your special ability, the answer was as clear to you as a cloudless sky.
𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴.
Since then you'd been seen carrying around leather pouches of dirt, water, and vines wherever you went. It was a nice start, but it sure did make your back hurt. And of course, Bisky would not accept that. Ordering you to dump out all of your pouches to the ground, she had you draw out your power from the scattered elements that had begun already mixing with the dirt.
Unsure, you had hesitantly stretched out your arm and tried pulling from the water. It took you a number of tries to get it right. You had squinted long and hard, focusing on extending your nen to the elements around you. To your giddy surprise, small, sparkling droplets of H20 were separating from the glob of inky mud to float just a few inches above your hands. Concentrating harder, the droplets began orbiting one another. They looked like little planets.
Sensing the vines, you were able to control their movements too, even manipulating ones that hadn't originated from your leather pouch.
Bisky's wide smile was all that you needed.
From that day on, you only practiced manipulating whatever was around you. The earth was your ally.
"Well, what will you do once you find Ging?" Bisky's voice snapped you out of a daze.
"Naturally, I'll introduce him to Killua, my best friend in the whole world!"
"What am I, a roach?" You mocked, but couldn't keep a smile from spreading across your face.
Gon's unyielding positivity and bubbly voice was like honey to your ears. No one could ever doubt the adoration he held for his best friend.
"Stupid, cut that out! It's embarrassing," said Killua, turning red as a tomato. He looked away in an attempt to hide his embarrassment, except you were right there to catch his blush.
You flashed a mischievous smile to Killua. "You know, I think an I-Love-You-Too-Gon-I-Also-Think-You're-The-Best would suffice once in a while."
"Shut up."
Killua was as stubborn as ever. You are playfully rolled your eyes before turning your attention back to the rest of the group. Gon was inviting Bisky to come with them and meet Ging, but she had said something about not being interested in men who already have kids.
"If I stay with you any longer, I really will get too attached..." Bisky tried to mask it, but you've always been good at noticing little details. She was going to miss them. And truth be told, you were going to miss her too.
"The hunter world is a small place. We'll all see each other again in no time!" you reassured your friends. "See you later, Bisky."
"Take care, Bisky." Gon said his goodbyes, Killua nodding next to him.
⋯✰⋯
"Accompany on."
"Nigg!"
At that, a bright light enveloped all of them, streaking them through the sky. Every time you did this on Greed Island, you had always shut your eyes tight. You'd never get used to the feeling.
The next thing you knew, the three of you landed in an area thick with white fog. It was slightly chilly, causing you to shiver. A hundred feet in front of you was a tall sakura tree with roots so large they could be mistaken for a magical beast. It had to have been there for at least a couple hundred years. Soft, pink petals drifted in the wind, dancing around you and your friends. As your eyes focused, you noticed a shadowy man reclining on the tree's roots. Could it be Ging?
Before you realized what was happening, the mysterious man turned towards the three of you and opened fire on Gon.
Then, Killua was diving in slow motion and pulling Gon out of the way and the two of them were rolling on the ground holding onto each other. Getting a hold of your senses, you looked down at dozens of bullets that had made holes in the ground and noticed an injured ant lying motionless on the floor. The thing was completely decapitated.
"Now look what you've done, you killed an innocent soul!" you exclaimed to the man, pointing at the poor bug.
"That's not Ging..." Gon whispered.
"What was that all about?! First, you push us down, then you fire at us. Stop messing around!" Killua accused the Not-Ging.
After helping Gon back up, Killua examined the insect too. That is, before it ruthlessly attacked him.
"Oh. It wasn't dead," you stated the obvious.
The man quickly finished off the ant biting Killua's leg with his machine gun before scoffing at you. He took off the black jacket he was wearing, unveiling straight, platinum white hair so long it almost touched the floor. You could get a better look at him now. He was lanky, and the beret he wore casted a shadow over his eyes. If you had to guess, you'd say he's about 6'3. Just who was this man? Had God finally sent an angel to cleanse you from your sins?
"I was being dead serious. If I hadn't opened fire, you would have been attacked. That was no ordinary ant, it was a Chimera Ant."
"A what?"
"An aggressive, carnivorous insect that's been designated Quarantine Level 1. You three didn't realize it, but you were standing right in front of their nest. If I hadn't fired the moment I did, an army of Chimera Ants would have consumed all of you by now," the angel explained.
You gawked at his beautiful long locks, gracefully flying in the wind as he turned to leave.
Gon seemed to have recognized the man, asking something about if he were the one who had saved him back then. Gon told a story about being rescued from a fox bear, though it looked like he had remembered something else because he held his cheek as if he'd just been hit. For the first couple of seconds, the man looked at Gon like he was in denial about the person right in front of him. Then, like it was nothing, he called Gon by his name. And if by a miracle, he also knew Ging.
"My name is Kite. Ging was my master."
You nudged Killua, "Did you hear that?! He knows Gon's dad!" Killua looked just as shocked as you.
The three of you followed Kite to a small campfire as he told them stories about Ging, himself, and his current mission. You were thankful for the heat source, warming your hands against the flame as it was only getting colder as night fell. You cursed yourself for not being like Gon and Killua, who always had their long sleeve layers and could just strip them whenever the weather deemed it necessary. All you were wearing were burgundy shorts, combat boots, and a black t-shirt. And of course, your necklace. You reached your hand and held onto the choker pendent around your neck. It was all you had left of your home. Just holding onto the pink pendent brought you enough comfort to warm you from the inside out again.
The sun was beginning to set by the time you met Kite's friends and the cute dog that had taken a liking to Gon. Your eyes softened as you watched Gon play with the puppy, having found its sweet spot right behind its ear. He caught you staring, and flashed his pearly whites.
"Y/N, come rub his belly! He's so soft!"
Getting up from your spot next to Killua and wiping the dust off your shorts, you traveled to where Gon was now teaching the dog new tricks.
"How are you gonna teach him anything without any dog treats?" you asked, petting the little dog.
"With this!" Gon pulls out a handful of goldfish from his pocket. He tossed one to the pup, who caught it in midair.
You held in a laugh. "Gon, why do you just have goldfish lying around in your pockets like that?"
"You don't always have time to snack when you're training you know.. Plus, It's in a baggy!" He showed you the zip -block bag that was stuffed inside the pocket of his green shorts, bashfully rubbing the back of his neck. This time you couldn't help but let out a laugh.
"Oh I see, as long as it's in a bag, right? Can I see one?"
Gon nodded and put some goldfish in the palm of your hand. Looking for Killua, you spotted him sitting on a log watching as the sun set under the ocean's horizon. He looked so ethereal as the orange light reflected off of him. The light made his fluffy white hair shine, and a slight breeze made delicate strands wisp in the wind like snowflakes. You almost felt bad for disturbing the picturesque scene in front of you.
"Hey, Killua! Come feed this dog Gon's two-year-old musty goldfish with me!"
Yeah, you had ruined the moment.
"It's not two years old! I bought it in Yorknew," he whined.
"But it's musty?"
Killua walked up to the two of you with a questioning look, and you paused your bickering to hold open his hand and transfer the goldfish. The dog barked.
"I'm not sure, animals typically run away once they smell Mike on me," he said, referring to the oversized human-eating guard dog at the Zoldyck estate. Considering it's job was to deter people, you guessed that made sense. Still, you had faith that this innocent pup could show Killua some love. He needed the free therapy.
"Just try it!" Gon pushed.
Killua succumbed to Gon's request, holding the treat out to the tail-wagging puppy. Though, instead of taking the treat, it knocked Killua clean over, licking his face.
"What the heck— Help!" Killua desperately tried wiping the slimy slobber off of his lips.
"I think he's trying to kiss you." You giggled.
Mission accomplished!
"Kite did say that hunters are well-liked by animals. This means you're a great hunter, Killua!" Gon excitedly shared.
Killua offered a small smile. "I haven't passed the test yet, dummy."
Self-Promo Sunday: “A Litter More Than They Bargained For”
Hey there friends and shipmates! I’ve taken a couple of weeks off on the Self-Promo Sunday posts, but I was looking back through some of my older pieces and found this fluffy one shot offering from a couple years ago. (It was part of the amazing @cspupstravaganza event in 2019.) I didn’t make it any cover art before, so I’ve added that to it as well. Taking place sometime post- season six; Hope is present and a toddler, but Henry is still there as well. That makes it canon divergent future fluff, I guess? Apologies if you’ve read this one before, but maybe you’ll get a little smile from revisiting it.
“A Litter More Than They Bargained For”
One pet she could have handled. One pet would have been perfectly manageable. A single, sweet-natured, reasonably well-behaved small pet - maybe a cat or a rabbit or even a hamster - wouldn’t have really changed anything about their lives in the seaside house or their daily routine that much. In fact, she and Killian had already been discussing a surprise for Hope in the form of a kitten from the litter her mom and dad’s barn cat had recently birthed, completely charming their pre-schooler upon her first visit to them at her grandparents’ farm.
Somehow, instead, all of Emma’s best-laid plans had been inverted and overturned, as so often seemed to happen in their chaotic magical town. When they had gone into the station that particular morning, they had found a large, mud-caked, burr-riddled dog tied to the bike rack and whining pitifully upon first sight of them. Emma was too disgruntled at the culprit for figuring out that their whole three person department were soft touches for strays as she charged foward to untie the poor beast, to even realize that the critter was already rooting into her affection. Needless to say, rather than their intended adoption, they had managed to take in a shaggy, slobbery mixed breed almost as large as a Shetland pony, with at least some Irish Wolfhound in its ancestry, according to the shelter attendant.
Gleefully mimicking that last declaration in her toddler voice, Hope had leaned over out of Killian’s arms to reach for where the huge hound lounged panting on the exam table, tongue lolling and tail thumping happily as she babbled, “Wolfie! Wolfie!” and patted along the dog’s back and shoulders as well as she could.
The thick, scruffy grey fur covering the animal’s lanky form did indeed resemble a wolf to some degree, and Kililan chuckled good naturedly at the easy moniker their daughter had seemingly bestowed. “Well, it would seem our little love has already christened her, Swan,” he commented lightly.
Emma wasn’t fooled by the casual demeanor covering her True Love’s words. She felt her last chance of finding a more suitable home for a dog of that size outside the town limits (preferably with acres for it to run) fade as she realized that her husband, as well as her little girl, was already attached. Killian wanted this dog more than he would admit.
Reaching out to stroke the gentle giant’s head resignedly, Emma reluctantly admitted to herself that the poor stray really was a sweet dog, despite her astonishing proportions and the amount of extra responsibility she herself would no doubt be taking on. “Hear that, Wolfie?” she questioned, looking the dog in the eyes rather than either member of her family, whom she could feel nearly vibrating with excitement beside her, “I guess you’re as good as ours.”
Henry only confirmed the permanence of the decision when he got home from the high school after his editors’ meeting for the school paper. Though a dog had never been something he had particularly asked for - they had spent so many of his growing up years being flung from one realm to another, either trying to rescue some member of their family, or seeking the needed magic item to fight some new villain, that it hadn’t left a lot of time for house training puppies or taking one for leisurely evening strolls. Still, as Henry came up the walk and saw Wolfie stretched out on the porch, Hope cuddled against her side and Emma and Killian curled together on the porch swing, the way her nearly adult son’s face had lit up and he’d rushed forward in excitement had shown Emma that kids didn’t really grow out of loving dogs, no matter their age.
Ruby, or perhaps the irrepressible brunette’s inner wild animal, seemed to find their new addition, and the rather obvious name Hope had latched onto, especially entertaining. Due to Wolfie’s size, the Jones clan now ate outside at the patio tables when they stopped for breakfast on the way to drop Hope off at Ashley Hermann’s Pumpkin Seeds Daycare, and before Henry took off for class and they headed on for the station. Her mother’s best friend didn’t even try to hide the fact that she saved back either bacon, sausage, or ham especially for Emma’s pet each day, laughing when after about a week Wolfie came to her the moment she exited the diner’s front entrance, before she could even reach their table, and began nosing at her pockets for the expected bounty.
However, it was Granny herself who startled them with a matter of fact question about a month after Wolfie had joined their family. The diner’s proprietress had come out to wait on them herself that morning, a real nip in the air as November neared, and explaining that Ruby was lying in for a while after the full moon the night before. Her half-spectacles perched on the very end of her nose, eyes sparkling with every bit as much pep and mischief as her exuberant granddaughter when she neared their table, sleeves rolled up to her elbows despite the chill and a pencil tucked behind one ear.
“The usual, Captain?” Widow Lucas asked with a playful nod to Killian, “or are you and your crew feeling adventurous this morning?” While awaiting their answer, she reached into her apron for her order pad, also pulling out a juicy ham bone for Wolfie.
“Here you are, darlin’ girl,” she continued, bending to offer it to their canine companion, much to Wolfie’s approving delight as she barked a ‘thank you’ and took the treat into her drooling jowls with an almost humorous care, then immediately dropped to hold it between her massive paws and began gnawing away.
When Granny stood to face them again however, a knowing smirk was painted across her face, taking their breakfast order seemingly long forgotten. “You don’t have a clue that dog is carrying a litter of pups, do you?” she asked, shaking her head at what she seemed to think was their dense naivete.
Crossing her arms, Granny watched a variety of reactions cross the four faces before her. Henry looked awed and curious, while Hope practically bounced on Killian’s knee asking, “Puppy? Puppy! We having a puppy?”
Killian’s brows rose in surprise, and Emma was already shaking her head in disgruntled exasperation. “Really?” she sputtered, narrowly eying the diner owner as if she might be playing some sort of elaborate joke at her expense.
Then, plunking her head down to rest on her arms crossed on the table, she sighed as her daughter contiuned to chortle in delight and Henry and Hook laughed heartily, in spite of their manful efforts to hold back for her sake. “Why am I even surprised?” Emma muttered. “Of course, she is.”
***
From there, they learned that apparently the shelter owner did not have it out for them, but that it can be genuinely hard to tell when a dog is expecting until they are quite close to their due date. It also turned out that Granny’s lupine sixth sense had been right on the money. Within another couple weeks, they could see for themselves that Wolfie’s stomach was rounding and she was nesting in corners throughout the house, particularly favoring the warmth of the laundry room between the dryer and the wall. Seeing as how canine gestation was only eight or nine weeks from start to finish, and their mother-to-be was already showing, it was a bit of a scramble to prepare, knowing the litter of pups would soon be on its way.
As had become typical since Wolfie’s arrival, this too went well beyond what they had expected. On the night they returned from Hope’s Thanksgiving Play at the preschool to tiny yips and whimpers greeting them the second the door opened, the entire Jones family was stunned to discover eight small wriggling bodies jostling for place against Wolfie’s exhausted form where she lay curled into the mound of old blankets and towels they had created for her once her fixation on her laundry room nest become plain. Various rather wetly bedraggled and squirming balls of grey, black, white and mottled mixes of those three colors in coat greeted their eyes, prompting Killian to comment rather drily, “Well, now there are nearly enough of us to crew a pirate ship.” He chuckled, shaking his head, as he added, “Mayhap we can give them proper nautical names this time, rather than letting Hope call them the first word that pops from her mouth.”
“Paaa-pa!” their daughter protested indignantly, stomping her little foot on the linoleum tile and placing chubby fists on her hips. “I did not!” In her two braids, beaded headband, and fringed brown “Indian” dress from the play, she made more an adorable than a threatening sight as she intended, but Killian nodded to their daughter dutifully all the same. “My apologies, little lass. Of course you didn’t. I must have been mistaken.”
Emma rolled her eyes and shook her head at his mannered playfulness with Hope, though her heart warmed inside her as well, loving that their little girl had never known anything but a devoted, adoring, present father, who might have to be pulled back from spoiling Hope at times, but would never let her down or abandon her. The two of them could melt her every defense, just as Henry had always done. Even if it did sometimes leave her trying to be the voice of reason, Emma didn’t truly mind.
Henry, for his part, snorted inelegantly at their nonsense, crouching to pet a nervous-looking Wolfie on the head and scritch under her chin the way she liked. “Don’t worry, girl,” he mumured soothingly. “We won’t hurt them. You’re all safe here.”
Her son grew thoughtful for a moment, mulling something over, then looked up when he asked excitedly. “What if we did pick nautical names for them all? Like Jack and Jib and Scurvy?” He was grinning from ear-to-ear now, as his Author’s love of wordplay awakened - an expression Killian quickly mirrored.
“Aye, lad, those are great! And perhaps Scoundrel and Buccaneer as well?”
“Hey, hey, guys,” Emma broke in, trying to stop their now-steaming train before they got any more carried away. “Let’s not get too into naming them. The families who adopt them may not be looking for pirate dogs.”
But her husband and son were already on a roll, adding Barrie (in a nod to the Englishman who had created Killian’s literary counterpart) and Doubloon to the list of potential puppy monikers, and not paying her words the slightest bit of attention.
***
Finding homes for their doggie brood proved more difficult than Emma had hoped. If nothing else, it had worked out that they were being weaned just in time to join a family for the perfect child’s Christmas present. And, much as she had intended for them to have a quiet little tabby kitten padding after her through the house rather than a train of panting, yipping, running and tumbling balls of shedding fluff, the pups were sweet and incredibly cute. So she couldn’t understand how every time she thought she had someone poised to take one home, it fell through at the last moment.
With a sigh, she turned away from the sidewalk where old lady Hubbard was walking away. Still cradling Cutlass and Matey to her chest, one in each arm, Emma crossed the porch to sink onto the porch swing with a dejected air. She bent to press a kiss into each of their soft, fuzzy foreheads, murmuring what good babies they were and that it wasn’t their fault. Intellectually, Emma knew it was rather ridiculous to be trying to comfort two puppies who were now playfully rolling and tumbling in her lap, not the least bit concerned at the interview’s outcome. They really had been particularly good as their potential new owner had arrived to meet them; sitting calmly without barking or jumping up, sweetly licking the elderly woman’s fingers affectionately when she offered them, and looking even more adorable than usual with their coats freshly bathed and brushed, so black and silky that their fur nearly shone. All their neighbor had seemed able to focus on though was that they might get under her feet and cause her to fall. When Emma had spoken to her before, the older lady had seemed so anxious for some company now that the last of her many children had left the house, but once she had arrived to see the puppies, all she kept saying was, “I’m all alone out there. If I fell, I might lie for days, unable to get up, and no one would know.”
Emma shrugged her shoulders and ruffled the pups’ fur once again; annoyed, but not sure what to make of the situation. Standing, she was about to take the two little rascals back inside when Killian arrived home for the evening.
“They’re both still here?” he asked curiously, one eyebrow arched in question.
Something niggled at the back of Emma’s mind with his question, whispering that he didn’t seem especially suprised. Shaking her head in silent answer, Emma ushered man and dogs back into the house and headed toward the kitchen, where she still had all of the dog dishes to fill.
“Ah well, Love,” Killian replied, something about his voice just a shade too nonchalant. “Perhaps it’s for the best. As energetic as these scalliwags sometimes get,” he laughed and scratched Matey’s belly when she rolled over to bare it in supplication, “they might have proven a walking hazard to one of advanced years.”
Emma was about to question him further, shocked that Killian had hit on exactly what had stopped the potential adoption, but at that moment Wolfie and the other six of her offspring burst into the kitchen and set up a chorus of barks and howls for their dinner, toenails clicking on the floor and tails thunking against the cabinets. So it wasn’t until later that night, as she was speaking to her mother on the phone, bemoaning yet one more failed attempt at finding the pups permanent homes, that the niggling puzzle piece at last slid into place.
“Well,” Snow offered hesitantly, “I’m sorry it fell through, Sweetie, but you know Mrs. Hubbard isn’t all that steady on her feet these days…”
Suddenly, it all added up: Mrs. Hubbard’s unexpected concern with puppies tripping her up around the house, how Ashley had at first thought they might take one of the puppies, only to be convinced by someone that mice would be much more fitting for class pets at Cinderella’s daycare, and how Aurora and Philip’s second child, Hope’s little friend Rory, had suddenly decided she wanted a white Persian kitten whose hair she could put a pink bow in, “like ‘Rie from ‘Ristocats” Aurora had explained in her daughter’s own words when she’d called to tell Emma.
“Oh my word!” Emma shouted, startling her husband, kids, and the pile of dogs sprawled over them in the living room where they were watching tv. “It was you all, wasn’t it? My whole family has been working against me this entire time!”
Looking sheepishly guilty, Killian and Henry both wordlessly shook their heads in denial. Her mother floundered for a defense for a few seconds and then simply fled by ending the call. But when Emma’s eyes came to rest on her daughter, Hope merely grinned widely, a shameless glint of mischief in her green eyes, and nodded her head in confirmation.
“Why?” Emma sputtered.
“Then the puppies are all ours!” her toddler chirped happily, falling back against Wolfie’s shoulder with a giggle, to which Wolfie merely huffed at the impact, then nosed Hope a bit further from the edge of the couch, as if she had one extra pup to watch out for and was making sure the child didn’t fall.
“We’ll see about that,” Emma grumbled, staring each of them down in turn. But, when she flopped down on the armchair in the corner, trying to hold onto her righteous indignation, and Scoundrel came over to check on her, pawing at her leg until she picked him up, and then nudging his grey snout flecked with white patches into her armpit as he stretched out across her chest and promptly fell asleep, Emma was smart enough to know when she had lost the fight.
They were the family with nine dogs now - an entire seaworthy crew.
