Ok now that I’ve let wake up and it’s over grow on me time for the new official clingyduoapolagist lovejoy rankings WOOT WOOT (not the including the covers because I’ve never listens to any of them dorry)
1. As always, Sex Sells. To me this is peak lovejoy. Good memories of the first ep, very funny story behind its creation, perfect blending of music and vocals, nothing more you could ask for.
2. It’s all futile. BRO THIS SHIT BANGS SO HARD. While I prefer sex sells, I can easily see how someone could perform this one (and at the risk of sounding parasocial, the fact that Wilbur was able to turn a song from a really dark time in his life into this massive almost tongue-n-cheek album ender is really special to me :’) )
3. You’ll understand when you’re older. Man this is just such a bop, the narrative and the instrumentation are top notch.
4. Call me what you like. BARELY misses the top 3 (and being honest 3 and 4 are pretty much interchangeable for me). Man does this go hard. And the spoken word bridge into the final chorus?? Chef’s Kiss.
5. Cause for concern. This song is weird because I always forget about it but then whenever I remember to listen to it it floors me. Deserved spot all around.
6. Portrait of a blank slate. Another case of 2 completely interchangeable songs with 5 and 6, b it man the instrumentation on this song is AMAZING.
7. Concrete. Honestly this may just be bias but man this song is just such a solid bop. While I don’t hold it quite as highly as the top 5/6, I’m never upset when this song comes on.
8. Oh yeah you gonna cry. Again 7 and 8 vary based on mood but ugh I just love this songs energy. It’s like if you turned a shit eating grin into a song and I love it.
9. Warsaw. I need to listen to this more to really settle my mind on it but it’s definitely a bop.
10. Consequences. Banger but again don’t have a lot of thoughts on it.
11. Model busses. Such a sleeper pick fr. Again I forget about sometimes but it really is a bop.
12. Taunt. No strong feelings, just a nice generally okay song.
13. One Day. I like the music video and this song can shoot up depending on my mood, not really feeling it today tho.
14. Perfume. This is the hipster in me talking but like, it’s fine? Tumblr kinda overhyped it before I listened to it so that’s probably why my opinion of it suffered, but I just never got the hype for this one. Not bad at all tho, 6.8/10
15. The Fall. Yeah again this is another hipster take and I fully acknowledge that, but still not my favorite.
16. Golden Hour. Fine? Idk I might have to listen to this more.
17. Scum. Now listen, I can 100% see the appeal, but you need to understand that I am a basic bitch and this one just does not do it for me, very sorry scum fans (tho it gets points for being a cTommycore song)
Anyways YUP there it is the official rankings!!! If you disagree you’re wrong anyways bye ❤️

Music anon, I'm sorry it took a while to reply to this ask! Life has been a little hectic (T⌓T) but I finally got the time to listen (and re-listen again and again!!!) to the songs you recommended and wowowowowowow!!
Cafe 130, Bleu Bledsoe & Gregory Sandomirsky — I loved this so much??? I don't listen to a lot of music of this genre (unless you count acoustic covers, lol) but this felt so dreamy! I constantly kept thinking of two lovers dancing together, as cheesy as that sounds. Or of a character visiting some castle in a foreign land, the mysterious king in a mask being entranced by them~ The violin and guitar go so well together, dancing step in step with the other, chasing after the other!! I loved this so much!!!! IDK how many more exclamation points I can put to show it!!! ಥωಥ
Wilbur Soot —
Trying not to think about it Is it fair to say listening to this made me feel like I was in some teenage coming-of-age film and just had an explosive fight with my best friend and now I'm on the bus ride home, staring out the window and trying to keep my tears in as I watch the scenery past by. I loved his lyricism so much! This song especially feels like reading a diary and the trumpets that come in during the interlude? The vocal layering? Chefs kiss, the regret in every sentence fuels me to write angst I swear.
Amazon Standing Lamp The guitar in the beginning literally made my ears perk up, the vibes in the very beginning piqued my interest so much. The tone set itself quickly, and I loved every second of it. And the discontented (?) plucky strings with the bridge? I need it in me actually. The lyrics made me add it to my OC's playlist immediately, lmao.
Eulogy GUITAR!!! ONCE AGAIN!!! BIG SLUT FOR IT!!! Also, how does he keep writing yearning so well??? His descriptions feel like poetry in a very angry way. I must know who hurt him - is he okay? (´;︵;`) "I wish I'd be the one who's hurt indignantly, but I can see; that the only one who hurts someone is me" BWAAAAAAAHHHHHH!! UEU UEUE UEUE!!1
Tumblr media
Around the Pomegranate "In rapid eye moves. I fall right back to you," and if I die??? Honestly, another "I'm in a coming-of-age movie" feeling song but this song feels like I'm an outcast who just met another outcast and there's a montage of us spending the summer together and running away from bullies or lame adults. Then the bridge happens and it's a montage of me eyeing my best friend with queer angst. His voice sounded so fucking emotional!!! The way the song just ends after it??? INSANE!!!
Jubilee Line Guitar strums, save me guitar strums,,,, the quiet humming in the background spooked me when I used my headphones (lol) but I love humming along to it!!! The way he blames the city for his angst? Yes, I love directing anger at inanimate objects, that's so my genre of anything. "I'm so angry at you I'm beginning to find you in everything" I LOVE IT!!! The bridge where he talks about the barriers on the tube line/rails and how they fail??? Take me, music anon, I feel like I'm gonna faint
Melatonin 130 The beep boops made me smile when I first listened to it. Also, as someone who has insomnia, this song was giving big #relatable vibes but then he added about tucking his face in someone's neck and it became a painful kinda #relatable. ALSO THE WHOLE TALK ABOUT MEDICINE AND ANXIETY??? TAKE ME AGAIN MUSIC ANON I'M GONNA FAINT!!! The bridge??? THE BRIDGE??? OUUUUEEEEEE WHAT A GOOD SONG TO CRY TO WHILE YOU'RE SMOKING IN YOUR ROOM!!! "We're all apes with a diary book and corporate reads your pages" ????
Tumblr media
Lovejoy —
Call me what you like The shift between Wilbur Soot's guitar strums to this band made me snort. I personally love pathetic yearning, like yes, kiss me if you need to but IDK if you need me like I need you MMMMM DELICIOUS ME THINKS "I'm not a paranoid, I'm a realist; I know you're gonna kill me!" OUGH HE IS SO PATHETIC I LOVE IT The twangy electric guitar plucks makes my brain happy. My head kept bopping just listening to this song.
Portrait of a Blank Slate The beginnings made me think of a movie montage lol. The lyrics make me think of a broody, distrustful, dude who falls for a magnetic woman who he feels will get bored of him but lord the yearning does not stop him. Her boyfriend is an asshole and the singer wants to make her happier??? I've got my head in my hands, music anon, when the interlude played I can imagine scenes of them getting closer than they should but always pulling away - hold me, music anon, hold me, please. Him apologising for it all being predictable??? What a loser (I need him).
Normal People Things HEAD BOPPING THE SECOND WE PLAY THIS!!! If I could drive, this song would need to be on the ban list, I will crash the car. This song playing during a chase scene with a delinquent and another delinquent but they're just introverted? Perfect me thinks.
VIOLENTVIRA —
God Complex Ough, ouGH OUGHOUGH This song reminded me of Yuno Gasai, lmao. But oh god, the lyrics??? Obsessed actually, I need this song put into a chip so I can stab it into my brain. The dark yearning??? The instrumental??? The way she keeps saying "I wanna be" to "I'm gonna be" - I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! Also reminded me of Brahms Heelshire but that's just me being a simp.
I Don’t Care OUGHGGGGGGGGHHHHH THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING ME TO SUCH A WONDERFUL ARTIST, MUSIC ANON!!!! Her songs have been on repeat for me since the second I listened to her lORD I just know the Creepypasta speed paints back in 2010 would've loved her music. This song is giving "I don't care if this love is destructive, I'll love you until I can't anymore" OUGHGHGGHGHGHGH MUSIC ANON HOLD ME AGAIN
Luka This song was so sad but knowing why she made it made me physically hold back my tears, especially the voice note at the end?? :((( Her lyrics, and the video description, I was teary-eyed reading it. The chorus is so heartwrenching (;﹏;) "I'm always pulled back to your soul" (´;︵;`)
Tarantula Girl This song reminded me of the time I was 13 and listening to Three Days Grace or Get Scared omg - I love vampiric love songs!!! GIVE ME MOREEEEEEEE!!! Was head bopping the entire time listening to this!! Also the instrumental scratches the itch in my brain "I kinda want you to stay, gimme the sweetest taste" OOOOUGHHH IM SO ILL also her voice is so good I'm obsessed
Iris, The Goo Goo Dolls — this song gave me SUCH a flashback please FNIERUHGRG I remember the fucking Wattpad trailers with this song, also when I was 15 and I had a crush on a girl in school I put this song in the Spotify playlist I made for her LMAOOOO Such a bop, and one with so many memories!! the OG yearning song for me personally
Cotard's Solution, Will Wood — piano, save me piano. the spookiness of the song made me sway a little in my seat while listening to this but then it got more and more unhinged and the way the vocals and instrumentals matched up with each other??? Insane actually!! "Sha na na na na na, free will!" made me giggle The song reminded me of old animes that I could never watch because my mom disapproved of my uncle's anime CD stash but specifically that one old anime about that vampire Van Hellsing? The vibes!!!
Laufey —
This is how it feels (& d4vd) I'm gonna be honest, I never actually listened to Laufey - no reason, just never got the time too so this list made me so excited!!! d4vd's voice reminds me of Disney Prince's serenading oh lord, so good. Then Laufey's voice joins in with the piano??? The yearning?? The violins?? You're out to get me, music anon, aren't you??? (this reminded me of satosuguynkento - "sorry for leaving like that, you don't deserve to get caught in my mess. loving you is just so difficult, i don't know how i should tell you that. I've fallen for somebody else, happened so quickly i lost myself. a shadow of you drifts by my window" especially. I'm going insane, I'm unwell, I'm ill.)
Promise THIS SONG??? EVERY TIME A FUCKING JJK EDIT CAME ON WITH THIS SONG, ESPECIALLY THE LYRICS "I've done the math-" SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU HAVEN'T DONE ANYTHING!!! Okay, but the lyrics? The instrumentals? Laufey better be ready to be charged with my therapy bill, I cannot do this anymore, I'm physically ill(er). another song that reminded me of satoyn - "Honestly, I didn't think about How we didn't say goodbye Just see you very soon It hurts to be something It's worse to be nothing with you" I'm deceased.
Let you break my heart again Just so you know, I had this song on loop when I "broke up" with my 4-year long situationship and sobbed my eyes out. It also me realize I have in fact listened to Laufey and she will most definitely be sent my psychotherapy bills.
A Night to Remember I braced myself for this song because so far it has not looked good for my mental health but I was greeted with such a smooth jazzy introduction and seductive songs and lyrics and I cautiously let my guard down. This song playing makes me think of two characters dancing in those wood, smokey, wine-glass-filled clubs. Made me think of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, lmao. The orchestra rising and falling in the background - oh god, I had to pace my room while listening to this. The vocals, the sultry tone, the instruments in the background OUHGHGHGHGHGGH I'm so gonna write something based off this song it's too good, I wish to consume it.
Can't Love You Anymore, IU — Nation's Little Sister never misses!!! I was preparing for a back-and-forth angry singing, but the resigned yet spiteful lyrics being delivered so smoothly made me go insane!!! "When I see you, I keep seeing myself in you, and I hate it" OUEUEUEUEEUE YOU WANT ME TO EXPLODE!!!! "I don't think we're in love anymore," the casual way they just sing it OUGH OUGHHHHHHH Like you expect things to be more explosive or dramatic, but the way it just happens and they're just tryna ignore it, hopes something sparks but it doesn't???? If I didn't read the lyrics, I'd honestly just bop to this in a cafe.
Please Don't, K.Will — THE FAMOUS MUSIC VIDEO LMAO. I honestly never read the lyrics to the song and watched the MV one time so it was such a pleasant time revisiting this masterpiece. The yearning, the pleading to not be left and the panic he feels as his lover grows more and more distant??? Ough hold me again please music anon,,,,,
Usher —
You make me wanna… The juxtaposition of Usher's songs next to the previous ones made me wipe away my tears and get ready to body roll seductively. The casual mention of infidelity and the infamous girl-best-friend syndrome oh lord, the lyrics feel so wrong but the vocals and the song make you feel less guilty. Do you think Satoru played this song when he was boinking Suguru while YN was depressed in the background, lmao?
Nice & Slow Usher whispering in my ear about coming over to my house made me think of those boyfriend ASMR videos and IDK how I feel about it LMAO This song plays when an early 2000s rom-com movie introduces a hot guy with cheekbones for days and also wears a scarf for no reason other than fashion (we respect it tbh).
Like A Boy, Ciara — Her spelling her name in the beginning was so cunty. ALSO, I KNEW THIS SONG SOUNDED FAMILIAR AND THE CHORUS PLAYED AND I WAS INSTANTLY HEAD BOPPING!!!
The Boy is Mine, Brandy & Monica — Had to immediately pace my room for this song, the edits playing in my brain making me go insane all over again. Such a classic tbh, should put this song in a national treasure vault so that when aliens find the carcass of our planet they can also bop to this song.
Medicine, Queen Najia — "Give you a taste of your own medicine," I love it when women succeed and enact their revenge. "imma leave you crying," OUGH IM IN LOVE! Also, I had a feeling this song trended on Tiktok and the "not for you, but for him" popped up BUT I NEVER KNEW IT CAME FROM SUCH A CUNTY SONG???? LOVE IT SO MUCH!!

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 14/10/2023 (Drake's 'For All the Dogs', Nines' 'Crop Circle 3', Lovejoy)
Content warning: mentions of sex, violence, anxiety and SO. MUCH. DRAKE.
Kenya Grace’s first chart hit is also her first chart-topper as “Strangers” hits #1! It’s a pretty big week, with or without Drake, and this is REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
Rundown
As always, we start the episode off with our notable dropouts, which as I always explain are always the songs exiting the UK Top 75 - which is always what I cover - after spending five weeks in the region or peaking in the top 40. “Always” by Bon Jovi is not included, but we do see the loss of some 2023 hits like “TRIPLE THREAT” by Headie One, K-Trap and Clavish, “Slime You Out” by Drake featuring SZA (thanks to the three-song rule - though it’s a toss-up whether this one will actually come back), “Tension” by Kylie Minogue, “Feel It” by Jazzy, “TELEKINESIS” by Travis Scott featuring SZA and Future, “Speed Drive” by Charli XCX and “Little Things” by Jorja Smith, as well as some old songs that won’t go away temporarily going away, those being “Dog Days are Over” by Florence + the Machine and “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi.
What’s always infinitely more interesting are the gains, of which there aren’t all too many this week. We do see the biweekly return of a Fleetwood Mac song with “Dreams” at #73, and then for our notable gains, we see boosts for “Escapism.” by RAYE featuring 070 Shake getting what must be a third or fourth wind at #54, “Back on 74” by Jungle at #30, “I Remember Everything” by Zach Bryan featuring Kacey Musgraves at #29, “Stick Season” by Noah Kahan at #28 and “ecstacy” by SUICIDAL-IDOL at #26. I’m not really complaining either, most of these are great songs. Finally, in the top 10, Sonny Fodera and Clementine Douglas grab their first ever top 10 hit with “Asking” at #10, also granting MK’s his second as a credited artist - it did surprise me how he’d only grabbed one before.
This week’s top five on the UK Singles Chart consists of two Drake songs at the tail: “IDGAF” featuring Yeat at #5 - yes, seriously, Yeat is in the top five - and “First Person Shooter” featuring J. Cole at #4. Otherwise, we have “greedy” by Tate McRae at #3, “Prada” by casso, RAYE and D-Block Europe at #2 and of course, “Strangers” at #1. Now to run through the new songs, of course finishing with Drake but starting far from it.
NEW ARRIVALS
#75 - “Lil Boo Thang” - Paul Russell
Produced by Sean Cook
I am getting older. Not too quickly, and I’m still young but I am aging gradually like everyone does. I also feel like I’m getting a tad more sociable, a bit more willing to put myself out there. This song samples “Best of My Love” by the Emotions, a classic disco track that is used extensively and liberally in this new song. It peaked at #4 in 1977, and I’m not THAT old, not that being old enough to remember the hits of 1977 would make my criticism less valid or anything. Hell, this song does have some new things about it - it’s not two minutes thanks to TikTok attention spans, and he makes references to the NBA 2K games - though even those are 24 years old now. Yet despite that… I think I want to hug this guy at a wedding we’re mutual invitees of, ask him about how his life has been since I last saw him a couple years ago, and make 15-year-old in-jokes we’ve had since we went to school. Everyone has an inner middle-aged person in them, I think this song takes it out of me. It’s been bubbling up for a while and it is pure joy. The guy can barely sing but it doesn’t matter because of the fast, rap-like melodies and the delightful jazzy soundbed, as well as that undeniable groove that may be very plastic, but still gets me excited. If I heard this at an outdoor party full of those 35 and over (and sadly, their kids), I’d have to go to the back and to the front. The bridge with him interpolating the Emotions sample and the computer-esque vocoder just to tick of all the boxes is adorable too. This song is cute, it’s a jam, you young whipper-snappers just wouldn’t get it.
#60 - “TLC” - Digga D
Produced by P YouGotThat
Now we have a streak of four songs somewhere in the middle of the chart which I honestly don’t think I’ll have a lot to say about, not because they’re bad but because these are chart regular appearances just doing business as usual, and isn’t the album entries from Nines and Drake we have coming up, or a newcomer like Paul Russell, or a general oddity like a heavy rock song charting, which we will see later. It’s just business as usual, and this is especially true for Digga D. He is still on his whole late 90s-early 2000s US rap throwback style, this time directly sampling “Bumpy’s Lament” by Soul Mann & the Brothers, probably better known as the loop Dr. Dre used in “Xplosive” featuring Hittman, Six-Two, Nate Dogg and Kurupt, which appears on the iconic 2002. Whilst never released as a single, it’s a pretty iconic beat, and is still certified silver in the UK. Is it a good song? Well, not really in my opinion, at least outside of Nate Dogg, who improves every track he’s on tenfold, so maybe Digga D’s more subtle use of the sample under extra layers of horns and a particularly gross-sounding drill beat can do something more interesting with it? Yeah, not really, the hi-hats sound like fruits sticking to each other in the fridge, and Digga D is usually at least a bit more energetic than this. God, he’s actually one of the more lively UK drillers, but he says in the chorus how tired he is of fame, and it shows. This is a pretty depressing song if you consider that… well, it would be if he did anything interesting outside of that chorus which adds less potency to his flexing, sex bars and mockery of dead teenagers than I think he wants it to. This is just sad in a pathetic kind of way. At least the sample’s cool.
#59 - “Hey DJ” - Joel Corry
Produced by Joel Corry, Neave Applebaum and Punctual
Hey, Joel, I think you missed a feature credit somewhere. You may have dropped it on your way to Spotify, I believe you mean to credit Roc Star on the vocals? No? Okay, well, she’s about as faceless as she is nameless in her performance anyway, in a pretty typical Euro-trance throwback that at least has the cheesy synth builds and a pulsing Cascada-esque feel to it all, even if the washes of white noise and ambiance get a bit much since they’re not very aptly blended into the song, it just feels like the synth pads are full of flat air. In fact, flat would be a pretty apt way of describing this entire song. It’s a shame because I have a fondness for this kind of sound, yet this feels a bit too tight to work in that context, and way too unabashedly cheesy to work in any other.
#41 - “Me & U” - Tems
Produced by Guilty Beatz
Those of you who read my 2006 episode will know I am a big fan of the Cassie song of the same name, which of course isn’t sampled here, it’s just a coincidence. This is a much more chill Afrobeats single from Tems, and one thing that stands out to me at first is the opening line to the first verse: “For me to come out, it must mean I am at the door”. The continued sense of agency surrounding her relationship in the first verse and intro seems to erode in the second verse, as she makes herself a blank canvas for her lover. The sliding guitars and fluttering percussion, feeling almost manic in rhythm, really accentuates that something is deteriorating… but not necessarily in a bad way. Tems’ agency and self-consciousness dissolves not as a result of manipulation but simple comfort over hours and hours of being together with them, inferred by the constant chanting backing vocals intertwined into the beat and the really perhaps-too-repetitious lyrics. He still needs to prove himself though - she needs faith and he needs to show her some substance before she can fully be part of his “matter”. It’s a hypnotisingly cute mutual love song and of course, whilst I’d prefer a more climactic bridge or a chorus that consists of more than four words repeated ad nauseam, I completely get why the song is that way, and it kind of works for me. Not fully, but it’s close - this is good.
#39 - “You & Me” - JENNIE
Produced by Teddy Park
Oh, how I wish these two songs weren’t separated by “Calm Down” on the chart. Regardless, JENNIE may not seem like a chart regular but she is from the group BLACKPINK, of which we’ve heard solo efforts from before, with LISA, ROSÉ and JISOO all charting solo songs, and I actually liked all of them, some more than others, so I was excited to hear JENNIE’s addition to the BLACKPINK solo canon. Well, again, it’s not close to another song of this title I much prefer - this time by Disclosure - but it’s still okay. Perhaps stuck in 2019 given the vocaloid sample that provides much of the backing melody alongside the charmingly dated synths, snap percussion and JENNIE doing a bit of a Selena Gomez impression, but that’s not my least favourite era of pop, and the shimmering slide into the pre-chorus is a smooth, inspired transition that… oh, my God, they did it again. This is just like when I heard ROSÉ’s “On the Ground” - it starts off as an above-serviceable pop song before dropping into chaotic, almost industrial synths that have no reason to be there but elevate the song to really interesting territory, especially given the screech of those synths, factorial percussion and glass smashing that transforms this chorus from sounding completely sincere to either being a falsehood - kind of implied by the lyrics about not wanting to fall in love - or just grimy and sexy, and given the rap bridge about not blocking his “shots” and promising that she’ll be his last love that just looks better on her, yeah, I’m guessing it’s the second, and the bass-heavy devolution into a swinging screech not dissimilar to a bad squeak really sells it. This is a pretty damn great song, definitely not what I was expecting and whilst it won’t last, I think at least I’ll keep listening to this one.
#37 - “Toxic” - Nines featuring Bad Boy Chiller Crew
Produced by ProdByDizzy, I Don’t Rap I Dress and Babycashy1
Those have got to be some of the worst producer names I’ve seen in recent times. Anyway, UK rapper Nines released his second album of the year with Crop Circle 3 - it reached #2 on the albums chart and we have two consecutive songs from it year. This one… well, it has the Bad Boy Chiller Crew on it for some reason. This does mean that they bring their style of blissful bassline production, with that wispy pitch-shifted vocal and twinkling keys shifting over the 2-step production. It’s a jumpy, bouncing beat with some cute sound effects and popping intricacies I can appreciate. The BBCC guys are just as they always are, but they fit the beat and ride it well, with their typical laddish delivery. Nines, however, still has a single flow and takes himself too seriously, so he is completely out of place despite carrying the hook! Every time the song gains momentum leading into the chorus, you get this sloppy rendition from Nines instead of any of the BBCC fun translating from the verses. That’s not to mention his droning, off-beat verse either. “I went jail and got bigger, like when Mario jumps on the flower”. Really? You make words sound good for a living, how is that what you come up with?
#35 - “I Do” - Nines featuring Tunde and Mugzz
Produced by Show N Prove, Jacob Manson and RJ Cherry
The amount of features on this album should be telling of what purpose Nines serves in UK rap. This is also much more typical Nines fare, with the whispery ad-libs, quick trap skitter, bad vocal mixing and dull deliveries from everyone involved, especially Mugzz who has nowhere near enough character to handle a basic chorus like that. To be fair to the producers, the wiry G-funk synths are pretty unique, and to be fair to Tunde, his flow is a bit better and more energetic than the others, but I’m picking at straws. There are no surprises to be heard here.
#27 - “Normal People Things” - Lovejoy
Produced by Psylla
Indie rock band Lovejoy are back with their newest single, and it’s probably their most concise, heavy claustrophobic jam yet. The song starts with the words “panic attack” and continues to sound just like you’d expect a British panic attack to sound like, with that tedious riff rinsing its anticipation over frustrated drumming, as Mr. Wilbur Soot delivers one of his least kept-together performances so far, with anxious lyrics, odd sampling and a lower-register moan that digs him well below the ground. The chorus propells the song further into anxiety, as despite the initially cathartic riff, Soot ends up gravelly whining the “hold your breath” mantra before a rapid screeching acceleration that brings us to the… kind of cringeworthy bridge. There’s one thing I don’t like about this song and it is the distracting nature of the lyrics, which is to be expected with Lovejoy but still doesn’t work nearly as well as it did in their EP from earlier this year, not because of a lack of subtlety but because there’s less to the song’s progression here. It’s difficult to swallow when it’s further contained in a two-minute single, but it’s still not far enough to make this song not click. It’s still good, still give it a chance, but I feel they have better stuff coming soon.
#6 - “Virginia Beach” - Drake
Produced by 40 and Harley Arsenault
Drake’s latest #1 album For All the Dogs is a bloated feature chock full of corny, misogynistic lyrics, depressively murky production and song ideas so frail they have to be confined to obsessive beat switches. It’s also my favourite Drake album. Outside of being comically pathetic and largely an embrace of that gross side of Drake he’s always at least tried to put up a guise for in the past, it’s also a damn good pop-rap album with unexpected turns, infectious hooks, smooth feature performances and hard beats as well as some genuinely touching lyrical moments, at least when he wants to bring them in. I won’t talk about the album at length here because this isn’t an album review show and we don’t know what else may be coming to chart in the coming weeks from it. So I’ll keep it pretty brief for these tracks, especially since they’re all good but not particular favourites off of the record. This is the opening track, generating much of its buzz from the fizzy Frank Ocean sample off of the filtered guitars and strings that coalesce into one melodious murk quickly snapped into place by a weirdly-mixed trap skitter and Drake’s loose, desperate complaining about this girl probably half his age who he, for whatever reason, is not with anymore. He’s off the lean and refusing to treat her better, despite the fact that she already has a boyfriend at the point she’s seeing Drake. He’s a complete douchebag in full nasal whining mode until the second verse which actually does a pretty cool switch-up  by filtering the Frank sample further and introducing a looming synth as Drake continues to rap some of his corniest relationship bars yet. It’s “on sight like WWW, on site like dot com”? Sure, Aubrey.
#5 - “IDGAF” - Drake featuring Yeat
Produced by BNYX and Sebastian Shah
This is barely a Drake song. Most accurately, this is a Yeat song with a lengthy intro using warping progressive electronics wired behind a sample of trinkling pianos, beautiful sax and mystifying vocals provided by jazz band Azimuth, that has little purpose other than to be subverted as soon as Yeat comes in talking about having sex over a completely alien rage beat. Yeat’s vocals are modified beyond coherency at some points, he’s showered in ad-libs, and most importantly, he’s not Drake, who delivers a completely serviceable, one-take verse that quickly gets overshadowed by Yeat… kind of going off, in a uniquely Young Thug way, where you’re not impressed by any lyrics or flows but you are impressed by just the continued violent refusal to stop rapping. Nothing is said of any interest - of course not - but it goes hard enough, it has that extraterrestrial tone to it, and the completely incoherency of Yeat is actually quite a fascinating refresher from the track that precedes it, that being…
#4 - “First Person Shooter” - Drake featuring J. Cole
Produced by Coleman, Vinylz, Tay Keith, Boi-1da, FNZ and OZ
The two heavy-weights team up for the first time in over 10 years and of course, Cole runs away with the fantastic feature verse you always expect, rarely actually get but is never a surprise to hear. I’m far from a J. Cole fan but the man can rap, and rap he will, especially when he has something to prove, rapping about how he, Drake and Kendrick are the undisputed GOATs of their respective generation. Cole doesn’t even wait for the beat to come in, delivering some deadpan wordplay over the soul sample from Joe Washington as soon as the song starts. Drake then gives a respectful warm-up, essentially acting as Cole’s hypeman, though with an odd focus on child-related wordplay, and then over the explosive trap beat, Cole just chugs on in what feels both endless and effortless, making good use of silent moments to switch between flows, delivering punchlines honestly not that far away from Drake’s and with the increased energy the beat deserves. Of course, we then got what is now a typical Drake beat switch into an even harder Memphis rattle, as if Drake knew he got bodied and added an extra verse from himself so he’s not completely embarrassed. He holds his own pretty well though, with one of his more technically proficient and aggressive verses on the whole album, as well as stepping up his punchlines and flexes a bit thanks to Cole’s presence. It’s a rapid fire rappity-rap track so I have no expectations of it actually staying, but it is still a killer track.
Conclusion
With all that said, JENNIE gets Best of the Week for “You & Me”. Yeah, it’s not what I expected but it’s a fantastic track that really digs at what I like about K-pop whilst also just being a brilliantly constructed love song. And despite me loving that Drake album, not even “First Person Shooter” can get the Honourable Mention. Nope, that’s going to Paul Russell for “Lil Boo Thang”. Seriously. As for the worst, I mean this was a pretty good week - not even the Nines songs were that bad - so Digga D gets it handedly for “TLC” but Joel Corry grabs the Dishonourable Mention for “Hey DJ” mostly on just being lazy. Next time, we’ll see if any of this actually sticks the landing for a second. I have doubts about nearly all of it doing so but for now, thank you for reading, rest in peace to Rudolph Isley, and I’ll see you next week!

Lovejoy's new single: call me what you want
Review? Thoughts? Analysis?
Table of contents:
how it literallly sounds (review/similar to)
Some of the lyrics and my thoughts kinda
Theme/topic/similar songs
personal thoughts/questions/criticism
Sorry English is not my first language and I don't often formally analyze songs (and never in English).
You may notice several parts have "similar songs" and that is in part because what I do most with songs is make playlists with songs that are similar and discover new music.
Musically it's really fun. The singing is a bit rambly like a crywank song (especially the bridge) and the rest reminds me of James Marriott's music. The drums sound cool (like always). Also the el-guitar, the el-guitar sounds pretty cool (it is that right?).
Some of the lyrics (via genius):
I never was a fan of the internet She never felt that safe in her own head We both hate the news
The news can be negative, I'm very good at analysis (sorry lol).
You can call me what you like As long as you call me
This is the title. I really do like this actually. I can relate this to anytime anyone has ghosted me or been unavailable for calls or I've been lonely (then directed at anyone). Also "you can call me what you like" as a thing is funny for me because I really enjoy a lot of my nicknames, and being called something different than your name can often make you feel connected to people, at least for me. One example could be from that one film "get in loser we're going shopping", that probably made that friend who was called "loser" feel good and like they were on good terms, yk?
But you can't stay awake forever No, you can't stay awake forever
I wanna stay awake forever. Or really really not. Love hearing someone else talk about it, even if the context isn't the same.
I'm not paranoid, I'm a realist I know you're gonna kill me
No cause paranoia can be so real sometimes. Fuck paranoia. I don't have a big paranoia problem, but when I have many issues piling it does occur yk. Also, "you're gonna kill me" can mean emotional death too if you want, and that's pretty applicable to a lot of stuff (school, politics, friends, etc etc).
Theme/subject/motive/motif/topic:
The song is mainly about insecurity in a relationship. It also talks about paranoia, cheating, "[her] kissing the skin under [his] lips" - which I don't really understand (like is that a thing? what does the average person think about that?).
It reminds me of Mr. Brightside, because of the way the jealousy is written. The description of what she's doing (kissing people). Also Wallow's Drunk on Halloween, with the wondering if a partner is thinking about other people. I'm sure there are hundreds of songs about these topics. I should mention tfb's Legit Tatto Gun because according to Genius the song might be making a reference to it. I'm also reminded of tfb's Lipstick Covered Magnet because of the desperation and like kinda "anything is ok" mentality (though I think that one is more about abuse in relationships, idk).
Things I don't personally enjoy/understand (personally):
I've had too many arguments over having critisisms of things that aren't necesserily flaws, but mostly personal preference and therefore I'm just disclaiming that this is my opinions and thoughts and questions. This is me relating this song to my own life, goals, insecurities and how much I'll listen to or enjoy it.
Basically, if you have any thoughts on any of this that aren't just "let people enjoy things" or "not everyone is like you" my ears are open, I like talking about music. (can you tell I've been hurt before lol).
I was surprised to hear christian lyrics ("the feel of grace of God goes you"). I'm an atheist, and even as a person living in a majority (protestant) christian country I do not understand the meaning really. I checked genius, but I'm still confused (anyone is invited to tell me what he's talking about btw).
One thing this song does is use the whole "I hope I'm the only one she'll see tonight" which to me seems overdone, but probably mostly because I'm (non-amorous) aromantic. The line kinda makes it difficult to relate to non-romantic contexts or non-interpersonal stuff. Also it makes it difficult to relate it to a polyamorous context, not that that's something I do especially often (though it can be fun).

12/11/23 Phenakistiscope
HELLO GREENER! ITS MY BIRTHDAY!
In the last blog, I got to talk about the cool wonder of tactile albums, and I just wanted to create something that somehow come along with amazing artwork and an awesome vinyl package, so why don't I just combine those into one?
Today, I will try to design something called a "phenakistiscope,", and some of you might be asking me, "GREEN, what is a phenakistiscope?" WELL!  A phenakistoscope is an early animation device from the 19th century. It consists of a spinning disc with a series of images in a circular pattern. When you spin the disc and look through the slots, the images appear to move, creating an animation effect. It's like creating a motion graphic in some way.
The reason I came across the term phenakistiscope is because one day while scrolling through Twitter, I found out one of my favorite bands, Blossoms, a band originated from UK Stockport, was about to release a new limited vinyl edition of their new album called "Ribbon Around The Bomb" with a vinyl trippy animation on it. It immediately caught my eye, and I have just bought one for myself.
Tumblr media
Ribbon Around The Bomb "Zoetrope Vinyl Limited Edition" by The Blossoms, Published by The Blood Records (April, 2022)
I've learned that the edition was referred to as the "ZOETROPE," and while the word itself has a similar meaning to "Phenakistiscope," it's actually just a cylinder-based version of the device. Now that I think about it, I find it strange that the vinyl edition wasn't referred to as a phenakistiscope rather than a zoetrope because it is actually a disc spinning. LMAO
So, without even realizing it while searching about zoetrope, my Pinterest board got flooded with these intriguing zoetrope contraption. What's particularly fascinating is how these 19th-century contraptions have found their way into the world of vinyl albums. It's a bit like a bridge between the visual and auditory realms,
I personally think the spinning animations on these vinyl records give you a taste of what the music's all about. It's like a sneak peek into the sonic journey these albums offer. It's a unique and engaging way to connect with the audience, blending the vintage charm with a modern twist.
In some senses, Zoetrope, do play a huge part in making an optical illusion, By presenting a sequence of still images in quick enough succession, the viewer interprets them as a continuous moving image.
So I thought it should be a task for myself to try to create one. But first, I have to understand how to make it work. So I jump on a friendly YouTube video, which you can watch here. for my better understanding of how to start with these little experiences. To be honest, after years of not touching after effect, I started to struggle a lot in this program. Green in 2019 would be so disappointing to me, but that's not the point. I have a chance to get back in touch with a program that I thought would be where I spend most of my hours. As a motion graphic designer, this experience really let me revive my old skills that I had long forgotten.
I started by making a little template prototype for my future design, for a band I've with in the past called LOVEJOY. I posted the design on my Instagram story and shared it with the band members, and they responded with:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sincerely, this band gave me anxiety. Half of the time I communicated with them, I wanted to represent the best version of myself.
I have created a playlist of songs that I love and turned them into Zoetrope designs. Since I got the template down, one of the first songs I have put in my playlist is a song called Miko! which the song is about breaking up with someone because they have too much self-complexity. The artist has a cat as cover art. IT WAS SO PLAIN TO THE POINT I WANT TO DO SOMETHING WITH IT RIGTH AWAY. Anyway, after I get the template down, I sketch down my own design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to say I'm not a big animation girl myself, I have to come up with the movement on the spot. trying to make a cat blink was the hardest ever. I am not the greatest illustration artist "what can I say? Graphic design is my passion -_-" so this is the best I can come up with. It took me around 1 or 2 hours, and then I started coloring down the design. Now color theory is my biggest enemy, even though I have especially learned about it. It's still one of my biggest enemies. TO MAKE A COLOR LOOK GOOD TOGETHER AND NOT UGLY? TT just end me already. If I have gotten pound every time I sighed I would be rich by now! (I lied, I would still have like 2 pounds.)
Tumblr media
These are the results. I'm so happy with how it turned out because the aftereffect gave me a bunch of headaches. and the LAG WAS HORRIBLE. I remembered now why I wanted to quit using aftereffects. but I'm going to start using it more now. Now I got only one design down for now. I want to design five of these things, so I will come back with an update on the next blog. That will be all for today, and as always, thanks for coming to my Ted talk!
GREEN OUT!
Edited: 13/11/2023
I have made another design for a song I am currently obsessed with called Fool by Choi Junhyuk. The song was so happy and sad at the same time that I couldn't stop listening to it at all.
I assume that the singer is holding a flower called marigold, but I do not have the skill to draw that, so I did a little twist and made it a tulip instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the sketches that I have come up with. I later colored them in.
Tumblr media
The progress for the other four designs is very similar, so I'm just going to plop them here.

a consecutive ranking of lovejoy songs (with explanations), from the opinion of a diehard lovejoy fan (aka me) (ft. songs from anvil cat, peewee, and jim jams)
let me know your opinions, and your rankings if you would like! i’m free to discussions and changing my mind about my ranking if you can talk me into it.
this was really hard i love all of their songs, but i had to rank them ahhhh
1. It’s All Futile, It’s All Pointless
this is honestly one of their best songs, with lyrics that hit hard and such a great instrumentations and vocalisations as well. the fact that it’s a rewrite of Wilbur’s old song makes it even better with being able to see the contrast from his first version to this one. it’s an illustration of how things may feel “futile” and “pointless,” but can be okay. its slowly become a comfort song (i will listen to it when my airplane lands when i fly home for breaks to feel less anxious). i could go on for a while about this song.
2. The Fall
ah, The Fall. the crux of screaming into the void about the nature of humanity, especially the rich and powerful. i could also write an essay on this song, with the simple chords and melodic structure at the beginning, the shouting of “fucking scared” in the chorus, and the complete breakdown at the end. a great song to just scream in the car.
3. Sex Sells
Where do I start with Sex Sells? it’s such a great song, and illustrated the true potential of the band on their first album. the more “chill” feel is so good, and i hope they explore the style more in the future. “how’s it feel to be so loved yet so alone” still hits hard after many listens. also a surprisingly fun song to play on the ukulele?
4. Concrete
ohhohoho cöncrëtë. i love the layering of the instruments at the beginning, and the drums in this song are so fun. also wilbur singing “sleep on the concrete floor” is *muah.* another honorable mention of good lyrics is “people on the night bus have to lis.ten. to. you” and the way it’s set musically is so fun. i love the lyrics on this one as well. it’s just so fun and good
5. You’ll Understand When You’re Older
Oh my God this song is so underrated. the focus on the instrumentals, the bridge lyrics of “and you think that it gets better, just you wait until next week, you’re keeping a dark secret, but you’re talking in your sleep” the idea of working so long, but people still saying that you’re not old enough to understand the struggles ahhh it hits hard.
6. One Day
this was my most listened to song on spotify wrapped this year oop- anyway. this is a great song to scream in the car, and i love seeing people’s faces when they hear “stop. cause why’d you have to kill my cat?” my brother started calling it the “killed the cat song”
7. Knee Deep at ATP
Great cover (thank you Los Campesinos for such a great song). It really portrays the calmer vibe that i described in Sex Sells while also keeping that chaotic lovejoy touch. And Wilbur gets to show off vocals!
8. Oh Yeah, You Gonna Cry?
This is such a fun start to Pebblebrain, and does a great job keeping the chaos going by jumping between rhythmic and melodic patterns just quick enough to keep us listeners hooked but not so fast that it’s overwhelming. the little piano riff at the beginning always makes me so excited! it honestly feels like a song you would find at the beginning of a coming of age summer movie.
9. Model Buses
I’m here for the Boris Johnson slander. My absolute favorite part of the song is the bass part on the verses (ash my beloved <3). The beat hits on “you’re just scared of the future” are so good. the fact that all the instruments get a chance to shine in this one is so fun. also the little “wait” before the second chorus. the cut time at the end is cool as well. this is a good song to analyze musically
10. Taunt
the Are you Alright? opening song! Taunt’s fun. I like how quick it moves, but it’s always leaving me wanting more. i can’t get the music video out of my head when i listen to this song, with george just staring into my soul. i also like the quick little riffs throughout the song, and the bass part is cool in this one
11. Perfume
I like Perfume, but i feel like it doesn’t hit as well as the other songs on Pebblebrain. i love that there is use of he/they pronouns, and the vibe that the lyrics seem to be flirting with the person. “you say your ex-boyfriend’s a policeman, i say you need better standards.” the lyrics are good (especially the second verse), but i feel like the song gets slightly repetitive compared to the rest of the songs on the album, which is why it’s so far down
12. Cause for Concern
I’M SO SORRY CAUSE FOR CONCERN IS LAST. It just feels like their weakest song compared to all the rest of them. Musically and lyrically it’s still great! but i just feel like it could have more. it feels repetitive, and idk i just find myself skipping it when i listen to the whole discography more often than not. it’s a nice close in the Are you Alright? story narrative, but it just doesn’t hit the same as the rest of their songs. The little instrumental part in the middle is fun and really illustrates the band’s style! The billards metaphors gives it the vibes of a man getting beat up in an old speakeasy, you know what i mean? anyway, still a fun song!

A Summer to Remember Ch 3
CW: brief talk of sex and more explicit sexual themes
I sat inside by the fireplace with Neddy at sundown, still a bit wet from the lake. My hair dripped onto my green shirt that I had put back on. Ned told me green looked nice on me. It really did; when I wasn't wearing warm reds or pinks I liked to wear more earthy tones like orange, green or brown.
I was making smores with him while Tim and Helen were somewhere outside.
Something about a tree or something.
I knew they were probably making out.
We had our own special way of making them.
He roasted the marshmallow while I got the little 'sandwich' bits put together for him. He was a good toaster. He knew how to get the marshmallow a nice toasty gold. We were both sitting criss-cross on the floor near each other. I watched his face as he cooked with a small smile. I felt this pressure to be more. . . .affectionate to him. But, wasn't making smores together already affectionate enough? It felt like it to me, but the longer I thought about it, it really wasn't. It was sweet but not affectionate. I sighed as quietly as possible. I want to second guess myself now. We had always been like this. Maybe change would do us good.
I put my hand out and pet his arm. He glanced at me and made a small smile. "Hi."
He relaxed slightly.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked.
"Us . ." I frowned a bit and took off a nice golden marshmallow from his prong onto a smore. He put the prong away now that we both had two smores.
"Yeah. . ." He sighed out. I smiled at his s'more and giggled in joy after taking a bite.
"Oh I missed these." He then playfully booped a dot of chocolate onto my nose. I giggled and attempted to lick the dot off my nose. He laughed at me failing.
"Here let me help." He then leaned forward and licked at my nose. I grinned while humming a giggle and pecked his cheek. He sat up again and we snacked quietly listening to the fireplace crackle.
There was still the lingering elephant in the room of what Timothy had talked about that afternoon. We didn't bring it up. It was like we quietly agreed we just wanted a break from that. It was probably important. . .just. . .not now. Right now we wanted nothing but peace and s'mores. I leaned on his shoulder. When your husband is a leftie you learn to sit at his right if you lean on him. Otherwise it would be just awkward. After he finished eating he pressed a kiss on my head.
        "I love you Maude."
"I love you too Neddy."
I heard the sound of a screen door open and shut. I looked over at Timothy and Helen walking inside, hand in hand. Tim's hair was a bit messier than before he left. There was no doubt they had made out at the tree. Based on the look on Helen's face I could even say they might have even gone further than that. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
"Ned, can you help me with this firewood?"
"Certainly Reverend." I sat up and Ned left to help Timothy.
Helen sat next to me and hugged me from behind. We touched like this alot. We were just friendly that's all, but it always made me feel weird when she did. My chest felt all warm inside. It wasn't at all the same way I felt with Ned. I placed a hand on her arm. Her arms were around my neck and her chin rested on my head. I smiled at her.
"Maude, I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable in any way today. . . Tim and I agreed that we might have been too pushy on some. . .things." I sighed and frowned.
"No I understand . . .you both meant well."
Why were they so curious? Was there something wrong with us? Was there something with me. . . Was it me? I stared at the fireplace and thought. Why didn't we have sex? Why didn't I want to? Why did I never kiss him so deeply as Helen had with Timothy. Why wasn't I a good flirt? A scary realization came into my head. . .
               "Helen. . ." I muttered.
"Yes?" She lifted her head and looked down at me. She pet my forearm. I felt myself melt. Were friends this close?
            "I'm not attracted to Ned . . ."
She let me go and I nearly fell. I caught myself and looked at her face. Her eyes were wide.
    "What?"
        "I just… I don't feel anything for him."
"You don't love him anymore??"
"No! I do. . .I love him so much."
"And you don't feel.  . .that way?"
I shrugged. I hugged her again. I wanted to hold her. I was so upset. I felt so confused. This was supposed to be a good time! She hugged me back.
"Oh. . .oh Maude. .so what are you gonna do?"
I didn't say anything and burrowed my head in her shoulder. I cried.
"Are you going to tell him?"
She then noticed me crying and petted my back. I didn't want to be anywhere else but her arms.
"Shh." She held me as long as I needed.
[Ned pov]
I sat on the bed of our guest room. It was a small room. There was a bed that had brown gingham covers and old pillows from home. There was a dresser with a mirror, a rug by the bed, and at the wall across the bed was a window that was currently covered by a long canvas curtain. The crickets hummed outside along with the hum of the air conditioner.
I was waiting for Maude to come back from the shower. She ran to the showers when me and Tim came back with the firewood.
I couldn't stop thinking about him. I didn't want to but I was. "I'm glad to have help like you." I remember he had said and patted my back. I remember a chill or something ran down my spine at the touch. My body had reacted to it. I couldn't seem to stop it. To put it frankly, I felt horny and hard and wasn't sure what to do.
Feelings and impulses weighed in my head before they were growing harder and harder to ignore. I wanted to grab his face and kiss him. I wanted to touch his hand and kiss them and I wanted his hands. I wanted them on me. I wanted him to touch me. I wanted to feel him. I wanted to bridge the space between us. I was struck with a stunning realization. .
Before I could even come to terms with my fantasy Maude walked into the room. I sat up from laying on the bed. It was a little obvious I was flustered by something. It was a bit embarrassing. She made a small smile at me that looked bluntly fake. I was about to speak before she did first, "I guess we might as well. . .just. You know." I sat there confused.
"What?" She glanced at my crotch and then at me. Oh. Well I felt silly. Of course, what else? Sex.
    "Oh, oh yeah."
"If you're up for it of course."
"I am." I sat up and took off my shirt. Why did I take off my shirt? I didn't actually know what to do. She crawled into bed. She was wearing her red flannel pajamas. We sat there not sure what to do. She looked sad. She wouldn't look me in the eye. Was it obvious I was looking at Tim like that? Could she tell?
"Maude?"
"Hm?" She looked up at me. She looked tired. I looked at her worried.
"I'm fine." She took off her pants and set them aside.
"Okay. Come here." I patted my lap and she sat down facing me. Her legs at my sides. I felt confused. I suddenly forgot how it worked.
"Can I kiss you?" She asked. I nodded. She placed her hand on my cheek and pecked my lips. It was a soft and gentle kiss. She pulled out yawning and rested her head on my shoulder. I smiled at her. "Tired?"
"No." She hugged my waist and I hugged her back.
"Do you want me to lay down or-?"
           "Oh, uh sure."
I leaned back a bit more on the bed and slipped down my pants and undies. She laid over me and kissed me again. My hand rested on her back supporting her. It was just lips. It was only surface affection. Nothing felt deep.
She sat up and stared at me. I wasn't that hard anymore . . . I blushed embarrassed.
     "Sorry."
She started to cry; her hand covered her mouth. "I can't-." She got off of me. I pulled up my pants and looked at her, sitting up.
        "I don't want to."
"It's okay. No, it's okay. I don't mind." She hugged me and sobbed. I never liked hearing her cry like that. I held her and closed my eyes. "We don't have to do anything. Not if you're unhappy." She just cried.
"What's wrong with me?" She whimpered.
"There's nothing wrong with you." I kissed her head. "There's.  . There's just not."
She pulled away and I let my arms go limp.
"Ned. .I- I'm not attracted to you."
I nodded, "Okay." Was I supposed to feel upset? I really wasn't. I felt nothing about it.
       "I'm ruining everything."
"No. . .you're not." Her tears started to calm after a minute and she hugged onto my arm. I sat still, my mind still wandering to Timothy. I stared down at my hands and pet my own palm.
"I'm not attracted to you either."
". . .oh?"
I stared at my hand. I felt dread. A looming truth I couldn't run from. A desire that I was scared of. I wanted him; my mind, heart and spirit knew it, but he wasn't mine. Yet, I had to confess to someone. My eyes brimmed with hot tears .
        "I'm attracted to Reverend Lovejoy."
She looked up at me with wide eyes, still holding onto my arm.
       "Are . . . are you?"
"I think so. ."
There was a pause before she just held me.
    "Me too."

Celebrating Woodstock - Part 1
With the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival round the corner, Harsha Prabhu looks back to visiting the US  for the 40th anniversary
A Fairy Tale of New York
Tumblr media
Parrots for Peace, Ecofest, Central Park, NYC, Oct 2009. Pic: Hans Lovejoy
Blog 1 on the Rainbow Dreaming US tour, covering NYC and Ecofest.  Rainbow Dreaming is a photodocumentary on the alternative culture of the rainbow region of NSW, Australia. The curators were invited to set up the exhibit for the Woodstock 40th. See more at http://www.rainbowdreaming.org
Which Woodstock?
“Don’t even bother about coming to Woodstock for the festival in August,” said Nathan Koening, our host at the Woodstock Museum. “It’s mostly expensive hype. Come in October, when the weather is better and there will be more Woodstock-related events to celebrate the Woodstock legacy. And you can set up the Rainbow Dreaming exhibit.”
Tumblr media

The Woodstock Museum were partners in setting up the historic Nimbin-Woodstock Connection in the mid-nineties, a rainbow bridge linking the alternative communities of Nimbin in north eastern New South Wales, Australia, with the whole hippie tradition of Woodstock. We had sealed the relationship by sending the Woodstock Museum an earlier exhibit from Nimbin, called Some Children of the Dream.
It’s now some fifteen years down the track. Walking down the main strip in Byron Bay I spy Hans Lovejoy sitting in a cafe, sipping on a latte. Hans, musician and journalist for the Byron Shire Echo, was in-between assignments.
“Fancy a trip to Woodstock?” I asked him.
“Which Woodstock?” he asked, undoubtedly knowing there were many: Woodstock, the town; the original Woodstock festival in 1969, which was held some 100 kms away; and the many, commemorative events down the years, held wherever the required permits could be obtained and the producers and sponsors lined up with the dollars.
“Not the festival,” I replied, “It’s a celebration of the Woodstock legacy.”
“Why not,” he said.
Lords of the Material Universe
The first signs were auspicious.
At Brisbane airport, waiting to catch the flight out to LA, we bumped into Elizabeth Thorpe and Debbie Lee. Elizabeth and her partner Ray, proprietors of Happy High Herbs, were the principal sponsors of Rainbow Dreaming and Lee, artist and designer, is an old connection from Nimbin. Elizabeth and Lee were headed for USA to open Happy High’s first US store, in Arizona. And Hans and myself were headed for New York, bringing with us the stories and pictures of life in the rainbow region.
From the plane, the New York nightscape glowed and flickered like some gigantic circuit board. “The lords of the material universe have nice real estate here”, said Hans. Towers of ivory, streets of gold. Would the lords be kind to us? Would they let me in, with my Indian passport?
At immigration, there was a blip: Had my passport ever been stolen? Why was it registered as Australian? The question in my head went something like: So this is what it feels to be at the mercy of dodgy databanks and the mood of the assessment officer. But it turned out ok. After a few questions, Officer Pena waived me through.
Did I have anything to declare, the customs man asked? Don’t touch my bag if you please, I have a haversack full of rainbow dreams, I mused to myself.
At the airport, the smiling face of Benny Zable, waiving a rainbow flag, greeted us. Benny, Nimbin’s ambassador to Woodstock, was the kingpin in the rainbow bridge to Woodstock and beyond. Benny had arranged for us to stay in Brooklyn, at the studio of Traci Mann, a New York tap dancer.
Disoriented by jet lag, Hans had left his laptop on the airport bus. That first night, with the El roaring past our window, we fell into a troubled sleep, woken by the clatter of the El and the cries of children at the daycare centre below.
Through a Glass
Our first pilgrimage in New York was to the Yippie Museum in Greenwich Village. The Village was the bohemian hangout par excellence in the sixties. It still has a funky, if gentrified, look. Jazz bars and restaurants dot the streets.
The Yippie Museum resembles the Nimbin Museum, with a stage for performances. One night, we caught some fine performance poetry. It’s the headquarters of New York’s hemp legalization campaign. They knew about Nimbin. They were also involved with a global linkup of cities for 2010.
1st Oct saw the launch of Mark Roselle’s book “Tree Spiker”. Mark Roselle is the founder of Rainforest Action Network. He’s also the man who infiltrated a Nevada test site. The day was also Benny’s birthday, Benny, an agent provocateur with his rainbow flags. The Yippie Museum was a happening place, true to its name of promoting green(sic) issues through direct action.
It took us a while to work out what ‘uptown’ and ‘downtown’ meant in the subway, but we had worked it out by the time we left New York!
Hans slipped out one night for a dose of jazz; the girls went on a harbour cruise; Benny was beavering away at the Ecofest office. My jet lag meant that I saw the city as if through a glass darkly. One image remains: a black, immaculately dressed saxplayer, doing “In a Sentimantl Mood” in the subway at 50th St.
Ecofest

The Ecofest office, off Broadway, was a hive of activity, presided over by Nanci Callahan, queen bee and director/producer of New York’s signature ecological fair, now in it’s 21st year.
We walked to Central Park to check out the site for this year’s Ecofest, passing Strawberry Fields and ‘Imagine’, the mosaic tribute to John Lennon. On park benches huddled New York’s homeless, shrouded in grey, under the shadows of the tall towers ringing the park. The Dakota apartments where Lennon had been shot were across the street. “Yoko Ono pays for the maintenance of this section of the park and the homeless are permitted to sleep here,” Benny explained. I thought of our homeless in Byron, chased from bus shelters, their beach humpies a mark for rangers. In this instance, New York seemed to have a heart.
Sunday 4th Oct was a fine day. The Ecofest site began to fill up with vedors and exhibitors, including the latest hybrid cars from Toyota and Ford.

We had been assigned the outer wall of the conference tent to set up the Rainbow Dreaming exhibit. Space restrictions meant only half the exhibit could be accommodated. We punched holes into the exhibition panels and strung them out on twine like washing on a line. It worked! Sayaka Nakao, Rina Terasaki and Saya Minami, our Japanese friends from Byron Bay, who had flown in the previous day via Tokyo to help with the exhibition tour, assisted us in this improvisatory task. Ever enthusiastic, our petite helpers were worth their weight in gold. Hans and I would have struggled to manage the show on our own.
Over 25,000 visitors streamed through Ecofest that day and, as we were positioned at the entrance, many of these stopped by to check the exhibit. Among these was Nirmala, Gina Lakosta’s daughter, who was in New York to perform a burlesque show, under the stage name La Viola Vixen. Another was a couple from Goonengerry, amazed to stumble upon a slice of life from the rainbow region in the heart of New York.
Tap dancers, including the amazing Mabel Lee, Traci Manns’s former teacher, all of 80; soul singers; stiletto heeled models strutting eco fashions; Rick Ulfik from We the World, the global peace network; Parrots for Peace from the Amazon rainforest; ending with a sing along with the legendary Pete Seeger, 90 years old and still singing his peace and environmental anthems.

The sun shone down on Benny Zable’s rainbow flags; children fed ducks in the pond; whole families happily picnicked under the trees; frisbees flew in the air. Catching the last of the sunset, the tall towers seemed to shower us with riches and green fields became fields of gold.
The evening ended with drumming. Three drum circles – Cuban, Haitian and African – rang out in the Park. The moon was full and so were our hearts.
Postscript: Hans’ laptop, lost on our first night, was returned to him by the New York City Transport Authority on our last morning in New York, in a fairy tale ending to our stay in the Big Apple!
Van Gets Ripped, or The Long Sleep of Unreason
Blog 2 on the Rainbow Dreaming US tour, taking in New York’s 13th Harvest Festival & Freedom Rally, Hancock, NY; and Woodstock Museum, Saugerties, NY.

New York Harvest Fest & Freedom Rally
Marijuana legalisation activists and their supporters on the East coast were to meet at Camp Minglewood in the Catskills, a couple of hours north of New York, for the Harvest Festival & Freedom Rally, on 9 Oct.
Tumblr media
Rainbow Dreaming crew at New York Harvest Fest & Freedom Rally, October 2009
It was an opportunity too good to be missed. Our hosts from the Woodstock Museum, Shelli Lipton and Nathan Koenig, had booked us a spot at the Festival. They had also booked us into a bunkhouse, with 10 bunk beds. By now we had mushroomed to a party of 10.
It wasn’t pot, but potties that preoccupied us the three days we were there. The toilets were blocked. Much time and energy was spent agonizing over the situation and negotiating the portaloos well before the happy horde that had descended on the Camp trashed them every morning.
Harvest Fest, the child of Hemp activist and performance poet Rob Robinson, was now in its thirteenth year. The legal situation with pot in the US is complex and confusing. Some states (California) allow the medical use of marijuana. Others will bust you for possessing rolling papers. The talk at the Camp was all about the bust of a long-time hemp activist, who had been caught with a whole lot of pot that he was bringing to the festival. Regardless, the pot was plentiful.
Tumblr media

From pot to politics. I met Kurt Shotko, a member of the Greens party. Kurt was of the opinion that the Republicans and Democrats were cut from the same cloth, manufactured by big business. “Look at what Obama’s doing in Afghanistan. He’s sending more Americans to die there. We need an alternative to the main players. We’ve got to wake up to the reality that the American dream has been a nightmare for a lot of Americans and for the rest of the world, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have been asleep for too long. We need a revival of common sense. Only a massive program of self education is going to do it.”
Then he quoted from the Populist Program, published in 1892: “They propose to sacrifice our homes, lives and children on the altar of mammon; to destroy the multitude in order to secure corruption funds for the millionaires.”
1892! The sleep of unreason had been a long one.
But Kurt was hopeful of the next generation. That’s why he set up camp at festivals across the US. And that’s partly why we were there too.

The Rainbow Dreaming exhibit was attached to a wall in the main music hall. Thus many, mostly young, punters got to see the exhibit. This was where The Wailers played on Saturday. I caught the Wailers when they played in Byron and I’m happy to report that they are still wailing away.
But what struck me most about the music at Harvest Fest was the pervasive influence of the Grateful Dead, the legendary sixties psychedelic band from San Francisco. From Cabinet, an established US indi band that played the main stage, to camp fire songs at 4 am, the Dead were everywhere, on so many t shirts and stickers, in so many riffs and improvisatory moments, as a psychedelic glint in so many eyes.
Tumblr media

I spoke with Jane, an artist from New York, who had a stall selling Dead memorabilia. She had grown up in San Francisco and was still a Deadhead. Her eyes misted when she spoke of Jerry Garcia: “You could see so much love pouring out of him. It was a love affair that lasted and lasted and it’s still going strong even when he’s gone.”
Minglewood Moment: across from the festival site, two lovers sit on the steps of a boat ramp. The dying sun paints purple tints on the tops of the maple and elm; waterfowl break the surface of the lake. A band is playing the Dead’s “China Cat Sunflower.”
Woodstock: The Town that Time Forgot
In Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irving’s story, a man who wanders off into the Catskill Mountains, meets some rather strange companions who serve up a suspiciously heady brew, and falls asleep under a tree. When he wakes up, he finds that some 20 years have gone by and his world has changed.
Tumblr media
Woodstoock, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
The town of Catskill is 30 minutes away from Woodstock. Some 40 years have gone by after the infamous Woodstock festival of 1969. And the world has changed since those heady days. But walking around Woodstock, the town that gave a name to the festival, (which happened in the neighbouring town of Bethel, some 100 kms away), you could be forgiven for believing that it’s still in the thrall of those halcyon days of hippiedom.
Tumblr media
Woodstoock, October 2009. Pic: Emi iizuka
Our first port of call was the Woodstock Town Board meeting that night. Benny Zable, Nimbin’s ambassador to Woodstock, presented letters from Nimbin and the crew made a presentation on the Rainbow Dreaming exhibit and its relevance to the whole Woodstock legacy.
The meet was dominated by a spirited discussion over rezoning issues, something very familiar to us on the north coast. Would Woodstock go the way of other small towns and be besieged by rampant development, or would it stay true to its alternative legacy?
That night we also visited the Bearsville Cultural Centre (set up by Albert Grossman, one-time manager of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and The Band) and Alchemia Café to catch some live music, including a spirited set by Adam, a young musician we had met at the Byron market drum circle!
Guided around by Benny, on our very first day in Woodstock, we met some representatives of Woodstock’s hippie past: Jogger John, the local village savant, who used to jog everywhere, but, due to his advanced age is now is on a bike; Day A, the village barber, who runs a soup kitchen for the Rainbow Family in town; Grandpa and Grandma Woodstock, an elderly couple, dressed the part, almost town mascots. Woodstock itself is full of funky cafes and art galleries. Turn a corner and spy a Zen garden, complete with waterfall and pergola.
Tumblr media
Peace Pole, Woodstock, October 2009. Pic: Emi Iizuka
In the centre of Woodstock town is the village green and the peace pole, with peace messages in several languages. We bumped into Fr John, a priest and peace activist. When he heard that two of our crew, Sayaka Nakao and Rina Terasaki, were from Tokyo, he beamed at them and said: “ Let’s set up a peace link between Woodstock and Tokyo. All it takes is five people. Five is the magic number. Can you find five friends in Tokyo who may be interested?”
Tumblr media

Fr John also runs the Hippie Church, on the hill overlooking Woodstock. This was the very church where Bob Dylan was rumoured to have married the love of his life, Sarah, his sad eyed lady of the lowlands. The church wears the patina of age, its icons fading in the dim, dank light streaming through stained glass windows.
Tumblr media
Path to Buddhist monastery, Woodstock, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
In stark contrast is the Buddhist monastery next door. Set up in 1975, the monastery is linked to the 10th century Tibetan Kagyu lineage. Its halls are huge and lushly decorated with tankas, its massive Buddha is gold-painted, its prayer lamps cast a beatific glow on meditating monks and visitors; its gift shop bulges with merchandise, all a tribute to Buddhism’s growing influence in the new world.
Prophesy
The next morning, my very first snowflakes, fine and feathery.
It was too cold to venture out. Emi Iizuka and Simeon Michaels, both from Byron, had joined us in Woodstock. We were toasty warm at the Woodstock Museum, hosted by Shelli and Nathan.
Under the tutelage of Shelli, the sacred Indian corn was brought out and inspected. Purple, yellow, orange, red and black, this was authentic Hopi corn. The girls played with the corn silk, good for medicinal tea and dress ups, fake moustaches and beards. They were transformed into imaginary characters, magical beings, the warrior princesses of Genghis Khan, dressed as men to pass unnoticed amidst the ripening corn. Shelli makes beautiful corn necklaces, a craft she learnt from Rainbow Weaver, a Mohawk Clan Mother.
Tumblr media
Padmasambhava, Buddhist monastery, Woodstock, October 2009. Pic: Emi Iizuka
Nathan spoke about the connection between the Hopi and the Tibetans. “Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, said: When the iron bird flies and the horses run on wheels the Tibetans will be scattered over the face of the earth and the dharma will come to the land of the red man.”
Nathan went on: “The Hopi’s felt that this might have something to do with the dharma coming to the US. They have prophesies too. After the swastika and the sun, there would be another force, symbolized by the colour red. This force will wear a red cloak or red cap. Spiritual wisdom will come from the East. This spirituality must spread. If that does not take root, others with the red symbol will invade from the West and crawl over the land in one day. The Hopis think this could be the ‘red’ Chinese.”

“When the Tibetan Karmapa visited Hopiland in 1974, he said: We must have know each other before; your features, ceremonies and way of life are similar to our own. When we bought Hopis to the monastery in Woodstock in 1979, the two cultures again recognized each other, and the Hopis said that the Tibetans may very well be the long lost brother who left them at the beginning of time and went to the other side of the earth to balance the earth spiritually.” Said Shelli: “When the shit hits the fan, we won’t survive unless we cooperate with each other. That’s also what the Hopi prophecies speak of. The Hopis are known as the ‘peaceful ones’.”
While we spoke of prophecies, outside, in the gathering gloom, Tiago Guimaraes, a Brazilian artist, was busy carving out a statue of a man with a guitar, the quintessential hippie hitchhiker, his hand raised, his fingers flashing the peace sign.

Elliot Landy’s book on Woodstock
The Rainbow Dreaming opening at the Woodstock Museum on Sat 17 Oct was a modest yet sweet affair: local musos were in attendance and we joined the members of the Woodstock drum circle in a bongothon.
Tumblr media

The highlight of the evening was meeting Elliot Landy, the famous Woodstock photographer. Elliot was all praise for the exhibit, gave away signed copies of his book to all the crew and offered to help us find a publisher for a book on the exhibition. (Sadly, I was to leave my copy on the street in San Francisco while moving house.)
Tumblr media
The Last Hippie, Woodstock Museum, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
The last act of the day was raising the sculpture of the hippie hitchhiker and placing him on his pedestal: a symbol of Woodstock’s hippie past and a pointer to its uncertain future as a cultural pilgrimage centre.

Woodstock Earth, after the drum circle, October, 2009. Pic: Simeon Michaels
On our last evening in Woodstock, we participated in the Woodstock Earth drum circle. Some 30 drummers were gathered in the backyard at Day A’s house. In summer, the drummers gather at the village green and spill out onto the road. As the sound of the drums rose over the autumn dusk, we were again reminded of how lucky we were with our vibrant culture of communal drumming and dancing in the rainbow region.
Last days in New York: the Bangladeshi cigarette sellers; the African rickshaw pullers in Central Park; the old men and women carting large bundles of recyclable cans and bottles; the man in Times Square offering to sell me a 15 carat gold ring or Obama condoms.
While the crew went shopping and sightseeing I wandered back to Central Park. More than the statue of Liberty, than Ground Zero, than the suicide gulches and canyons of Wall Street, I was drawn to the spot with the Imagine mosaic and tribute to John Lennon. Park benches line the walkway, each with its dedication. I sat there, amidst the touros and derros, as the shadows lengthened.
Then I saw these lines from Dylan Thomas, carved on a park bench: “Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion.”

Two weeks after Boston moved into the second phase of reopening, Woods Hill Pier 4 - the farm-to-table spot in Seaport - opened up its patio for its inaugural summer season. They’re accepting reservations for parties of up to six people from 11:30am-11pm, Tuesday through Saturday.
We would call it one of our favorite patios in the city, though that would be a lie since we haven’t been there yet. But based on the photos we’ve seen, it looks like a great spot to sip on one (or four) of their excellent cocktails.

As far as we know, there’s no other place that pairs unobstructed views of the harbor with a large patch of intentionally placed and perfectly manicured grass so well. The whole place looks like a modern architect’s fantasyland, which may be the best setting for Woods Hill’s lobster popovers with crème fraîche anyway.
If you’re looking for other patios in Boston, we’ve picked five of our favorites below. And you can always check out our running list of spots that have reopened for outdoor dining.
Five Other Great Patios To Check Out Alcove 50 Lovejoy Wharf 7.7
Alcove at Lovejoy Wharf is a place we forget about sometimes. Not because it’s bad, but because it’s tucked away in a warehouse building right next to the Zakim Bridge, in the shadow of the Garden. Now that their patio is open again, however, we’re thinking about their house focaccia, great cocktail list, and when we should make a reservation. They’re open from 5pm onwards during the week, and 12pm onwards on the weekends. As an added bonus, you can head nextdoor to Night Shift Brewing afterward so you can tell your friends you spent a whole day staring at the Charles River docks.

Loyal Nine 660 Cambridge St 8.2
The patio at Loyal Nine is a repurposed driveway filled with custom benches and market lights - which, believe it or not, is an ideal spot for the seafood-centric menu here. Some currently available items include salt-and-pepper calamari and whole-fried redfish. And since the patio is open from 9am onwards Tues-Sun, it means it’s also an ideal spot for coffee and breakfast sandwiches in the morning, and brunch on Sundays. Spots are available for walk-in only at this time.

The Bowery Bar 2261 Dorchester Ave
The Bowery Bar has a back patio that’s fully hidden from street view - and it’s complete with colorful stools, umbrellas, and an impressive amount of greenery (seriously, look at those trees). For 90 minutes of your day - since that’s the maximum time allowed for each seating - you can feel like you’re somewhere other than Boston. The menu is filled with a variety of things ranging from banana foster pancakes to fish tacos and short rib arancini. Reservations can be made here.

Branch Line 321 Arsenal St
There’s no bocce court at Branch Line this summer, but their covered patio is still one of the most impressive we’ve been to. It’s got a nice industrial aesthetic, and (more importantly) plenty of seating to have the stellar rotisserie chicken and rosemary fries. A glass of rosé doesn’t hurt either. You can make a reservation here - please note there’s an additional 5% fee added to all tabs.

ReelHouse 6 New St 5.9
ReelHouse has the best views of any restaurant in the city. It’s the kind that you would normally pay a high price to ride an elevator for, except here your dollars go toward heavy-handed drinks and mediocre food. But as you watch the sunset over the city’s skyline, mojito slushie in hand, you’ll probably just be glad to be out of the house. Reservations can be made online.

Holman Lane – Wildwood Trail – Birch Trail Loop in Forest Park
Forest Park offers nearly instant access to the outdoors for people in Portland, Oregon. Pittock Mansions and the Stone House are popular destinations that can attract weekend crowds in Forest Park. For a quieter hike, combine Holman Lane, a section of Wildwood Trail, and Birch Trail for a 2.7-mile loop with 425 feet of elevation change. Holman Lane and Birch Trail leave NW 53rd Drive next to each other and connect to the major hiking trail through Forest Park to explore charming woodlands in the Tualatin Mountains (better known as the West Hills)
Set out from the Birch Trailhead along NW 53rd Drive, which is half a mile from NW Cornell Road and offers ample parking. Instead of embarking on Birch Trail, which is just across the road, start the loop by walking a tenth of a mile down 53rd Drive toward Cornell Road. Turn up the first gravel road on the left next to a cluster of mailboxes. This is an access road to Holman Lane that serves as a driveway for houses. Though the start of Birch Trail is well marked, you have to be a bit inquisitive to find Holman Lane.
Parking is prohibited along the road (or driveway) to Holman Lane, but you are free to walk up it. After less than 100 yards, bear right at a split to avoid the driveway on the left. You will soon arrive at the gate at the top of Holman Lane.
As you enter Forest Park, a sign explains that bikes are allowed to travel uphill only on Holman Lane. Bikes are prohibited on Wildwood Trail and Birch Trail. By hiking the loop in this direction, you will face any bike traffic head on.
Beyond the gate, Holman Lane tips downhill for 0.7 miles, descending 385 feet. Holman Lane carves a wide path through Douglas firs on the slopes above Balch Creek Canyon. Oregon grapes and sword ferns cover the forest floor. The invasive English ivy is there too, becoming more present later in the loop.
Hiking down Holman Lane
Wildwood Trail comes into view beneath you as Holman Lane drops to an obvious junction. To the right, Wildwood Trail heads toward the Stone House and Lower Macleay Trail, which are 0.45 miles away. Straight ahead, Holman Lane descends 1/8 of a mile to NW Raleigh Street in the Willamette Heights neighborhood below Forest Park (an alternate starting point for this loop).
Turn left up Wildwood Trail to proceed with the hike back to NW 53rd Drive. You will be on Wildwood Trail for the next 1.6 miles, having hiked 0.88 miles from Birch Trailhead.
Wildwood Trail ascends gradually from Holman Lane, leading north up a crease in the terrain to a short wooden footbridge. The trail exits the draw and crosses a hillside near the edge of Forest Park. Look out through the trees to find obscured views across the Willamette River toward North Portland.
Cross a trio of small bridges, 0.3 miles from Holman Lane, and meander up Wildwood Trail to a junction with Aspen Trail, which descends to the right toward another trailhead accessing Forest Park. Bear left to stick with Wildwood Trail, spotting an enormous man-made woodpecker on a nearby tree trunk.
Wildwood Trail heads west from the junction, weaving through a beautiful woodland. The dangling white flowers of Indian plum appear along the loop in early spring, followed later in the season by pops of gold on the ground from yellow woodland violets.
The winding path of Wildwood Trail
Ferns and moss grow up trees along Wildwood Trail
After a moderate ascent, Wildwood Trail slips into a draw, 3/4 miles beyond the junction with Aspen Trail. A short footbridge on the trail crosses a seasonal branch of Thurman Creek. Round a bend to enter a second draw with a stream feeding into Thurman Creek. The trail rises and falls, crossing another crease in the terrain created by a branch of Thurman Creek. Despite the encroachment of ivy, the forest along the trail is lovely, with tall firs dressed in moss and ferns.
Wildwood Trail goes around a draw in the terrain
Wildwood Trail ascends from the third branch of Thurman Creek and comes to a junction with Birch Trail. The junction is marked with trail signs and a map of Forest Park. After nearly 2.5 miles of hiking, make a hard left turn up Birch Trail, leaving Wildwood Trail to close out the loop.
Birch Trail is 0.22 miles long and ascends the final 140 feet to exit Forest Park. Birch Trail rises through red alders, bigleaf maples, and more Douglas firs. At the top of Birch Trail, the single track exits the forest, turns to the right and comes to NW 53rd Drive just across from the parking area.
Birch Trail
This combination of Holman Lane, Wildwood Trail, and Birch Trail is 2.7 miles long with 425 feet of elevation change (downhill first and then uphill). Dogs are welcome on leashes, but bikes are not allowed (except going uphill on Holman Lane). Parking at the trailhead is free and no permit is required for this hike in Forest Park, so get out and enjoy!
The basic directions for this loop are:
Start from Birch Traihead and walk south down NW 53rd Drive
Turn left up an access road to Holman Lane (0.1 miles)
Bear right at a split and pass through the Holman Lane Gate (0.18 miles)
Turn left up Wildwood Trail (0.88 miles)
Bear left past Aspen Trail, staying on Wildwood Trail (1.32 miles)
Turn left up Birch Trail (2.48 miles)
Return to Birch Traihead on NW 53rd Drive (2.7 miles)
To get to the trailhead: From Interstate 405 in downtown Portland, take exit 3 to head west on Route 30. Drive about half a mile to the first exit for Vaughn Street. The offramp passes over the top of Route 30 and merges with Vaughn Street. Drive a couple blocks west and turn left onto NW 25th Avenue. Drive half a mile south and turn right onto NW Lovejoy Street. In 400 feet, bear right onto Cornell Road. Drive 1.9 miles up Cornell Road and turn right up NW 53rd Drive. Go half a mile up this road and park in one of the spaces on the left across from Birch Trail.
Trailhead address: 1800 Northwest 53rd Drive, Portland, OR 97210 Trailhead coordinates: 45.5336, -122.7332 (45° 32′ 00.95″N 122° 43′ 59.51″W)

Covered Bridge Photography of New England
Covered Bridge Photography of New England
It was a great Autumn for clearing some covered bridges off my to-do list. Some were new ones and some were old friends. Some I have been trying to time it just right with this first one…
