My Solo Exchange Diary Volume 2 by Nagata Kabi
In the autobiographical manga My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness and My Solo Exchange Diary Volume 1 author Nagata Kabi reflects on the various mental health issues she deals with in real life: depression, co-dependent relationships, difficultly connecting with others, eating disorders, compulsive hair pulling and low self-esteem. This series of books may have started with the bait theme of sexual exploration, but it quickly became obvious that mental health issues were the bigger topic.
In My Solo Exchange Diary Volume 2 the author’s mental health has hit rock bottom. She’s having difficulty working, is crying frequently and turning increasingly to alcohol to try to feel better, and her loneliness has made her return to living with her family (after the drama and difficulty she faced in the previous book to move out and establish her independence). On one hand her new appreciation and love for her family can be seen as a positive thing, on the other hand it looks like she’s falling back on co-dependency. Because of alcoholism and her compulsion to drink a lot of liquids she’s now wetting the bed regularly. Her mother tells her the doctor suggests that she check in to a hospital and the second half of the book focuses on her struggles inside.
The art style is a subtle indication of the author’s mental state, it is much more basic than her previous art, there’s less detail, less texture, less experimentation with layout. The majority of panels just show her in the middle with hardly anything else around. To me this shows two things: author Nagata Kabi is literally having difficulty drawing and creating work, I believe the art is a product of reality rather than a clever, conscious decision by the author, and secondly the author is way too focused on herself, too introspective, everything is too much about her and her experience. She realizes this in the end, she realizes that while she was in the hospital (I don’t believe the words “psychiatric ward” were ever used but that’s what it seem to have been), she never tries to interact with the other patients or describe them properly or even take an interest in other people out of curiosity.
(Some spoilers) The first time she agrees to be checked-in to a hospital, she and her mum are in the reception area and then she changes her mind and they go back home, she states that she can change her own life and stop drinking so much, but she then falls back into old habits. The second time she is in the hospital for 3 days and leaves. Since she has voluntarily checked-in she can decide to leave whenever she wants. The third time she is in the hospital for 10 days but describes the experience as if it were months and months of mental torture and she starts self-harming. There’s mention of some helpful and unhelpful doctors and nurses but nothing about in-depth therapy.
One positive thing is that her family seems to be much more supportive and more patient with her. I think they’ve realized the seriousness of her problems and understand that the best thing they can do is to just be there for her.
This volume ends with a short one-shot dystopian fantasy story about two quirky characters trying to escape the pressures and scrutiny of a literal band of villains named ‘society’. It’s only one chapter long but it’s not particularly easy to follow and the author herself references this earlier in the book as an idea that was originally rejected by magazines but which she worked on because she had no new ideas.
She mentions looking up reviews and discovering that some people were disappointed with My Solo Exchange Diary Volume 1 and I’m not surprised, people want to read that she’s getting better, that maybe she’s starting dating and exploring her sexuality and connecting with others. Sorry but No, if you as a reader want a feel-good story where some tragedy happens but ultimately the main character is triumphant at the end then go look elsewhere. A couple of months ago I saw that Nagata Kabi has a new book publishing this year: My Alcoholic Escape from Reality. When I saw it I hadn’t yet started reading My Solo Exchange Diary Volume 2 but I immediately said to a friend: “I’m not going to buy it, after everything that’s happened in the first two books, now adding alcoholism into the mix?!”. I’ve changed my mind since then. These books are a very real representation of what it’s like to deal with mental health issues. Real life does not have a neat beginning, middle and end. Dealing with mental health issues is a struggle, a constant one, and even someone who has significantly recovered from a break down they may still struggle occasionally. I will buy the next book, I want to support the artist, I want her to know that people care, that we acknowledge her pain.

FINALLY! Puri- Puri’s Comback in One- Punch
Tumblr media
Well first let’s get to know more about Puri- Puri, who is he? And why does he had his come back now? I she an important character in the story?
Puri-Puri Prisoner is a large muscular man with a stubbly, cleft chin, large lips and black bushy hair. He has a well-defined jawline and light blue eyes with long eyelashes. He wears a traditional prison jumpsuit with white and blue stripes. He used to wear a white sleeveless vest with a large pink heart in the center over his prison clothes, but he ripped it during one of his transformations.
Puri-Puri Prisoner is a flamboyant, openly homosexual superhero. He takes an interest in other, up-and-coming heroes and criminals; an interest which led to his titular jail sentence, as he kept attacking them. Criminals that he apprehends are then added to his harem. He appears to be rather absent-minded, as he did not think to remove his sweater before bulking up, and then blamed his opponent, the Deep Sea King, for its destruction.
Puri Puri Prisoner is a strange, albeit lovable, character among an already bizarre roster of heroes. Though he's been imprisoned with a sentence of a thousand years, the Prisoner will escape and fight evil whenever his skills are needed. His powers aren't linked to the fact that he's naked necessarily, but he insists that it is necessary whenever he fights monsters or any other ne'er-do-wells.
Outside his homosexuality, he also has a standard about a true justice, on protesting Sweet Mask's attitude on criticizing and mocking the hardships of the S-Class and A-Class heroes on trying to risk their lives protecting A-City, and resisting an unexpected invasion from the Dark Matter Thieves, asking Sweet Mask on which side he truly is.
Puri Puri is an S-Class hero, the highest rank that any hero can achieve though he is smack dab at the bottom of the rankings. His background is something of a mystery but his powers and unique personality speak for themselves . He also seems relatively kind and very polite. Being a S-Class hero, Puri-Puri Prisoner is a very powerful individual. He is able to blow holes in the body of a Dragon-level monster and deal minor damage to the Deep Sea King while not having killling intent.
However, while powerful, he self-proclaims himself to be the weakest S-Class hero. This is shown at the beginning of the series when he had difficutly fighting some Demon-level mysterious beings. However, after his training, his power greatly increased to the point of being to defeat several Demon-level mysterious beings, although he's often required to use his special moves to defeat them, while other S-class heroes have been able to defeat Demon-level mysterious beings with ease.
The Monster Association of One-Punch Man has revealed its nefarious plans for humanity, either destroying the fighters in their path or transforming them into monsters themselves. To combat this growing threat, the city is going need more than Saitama to beat back the horde of monsters at the door. With Genos, Metal Knight, and Suiryu defeated, the return of Puri Puri Prisoner is a much welcome addition to the ranks of heroes. How does the nude brawler mark his splashy return to the series? As usual, in glorious fashion!
Saitama made a splash of his own in this episode, defeating not just Bakuzan but Gouketsu to boot! After dispatching the monsters in a quick fashion, and turning down the mentor ship of a beaten down Suiryu, the camera shifts to an embattled Puri Puri Prisoner, fighting a monster that is seemingly a terrible match for his powers: a giant porcupine beast holding a "Free Hugs" sign!
Tumblr media
In the battle between Prisoner and Porcupine, Puri Puri manages to harness the power of confused onlookers to increase his strength and literally hug the giant beast to death. Puri Puri thanks to the confused onlookers after his victory, still naked of course, and contemplates what his next move should be against the seemingly never ending hordes of monsters directed at the Hero Association and the city.
What did you think of the return of the Puri Puri Prisoner? How would you defeat a giant porcupine holding a "Free Hugs" sign?
One-Punch Man Season Two is streaming on Hulu. The season is directed by Chikara Sakurai for new production studio J.C. Staff. The new season is described as follows, "Saitama is a hero who only became a hero for fun. After three years of “special training,” he’s become so strong that he’s practically invincible. In fact, he’s too strong—even his mightiest opponents are taken out with a single punch.
Now, the great seer Madame Shibabawa’s prediction about the Earth being doomed seems to be coming true as the frequency of monster incidents escalates. Alongside Genos, his faithful disciple, Saitama begins his official hero duties as a member of the Hero Association, while Garou, a man utterly fascinated by monsters, makes his appearance."
