Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities‘s take on Pickman’s Model is baffeling to me. How someone, can take such a brilliant and fantastic story, strip it of EVERYTHING that makes it great and stand out among the “normal” horror, then leave only a reeking pile of bad cult flick clichës, and still think “Ye, this is good!”. Guillermo del Toro absolutely have his moments of true genius within the genre, but after first reading his script of “Mountains of Madness” (SO glad it got canceled) and then watching this... it amazes me how he repeatedly seems to completely miss what made the orginal stories stand out. Sure, he didn’t Direct this one, but he still put his name all over it. Heck, Fallout 4s Pickman Gallery was more true to Pickman’s Model and better than this Cabinet of Curiosities take; and that says something beacuse that was just a fun silly side quest.

At a crossroads of Fate stood a boy of only 12 years old, so small, think and jaded that the ghosts that cursed such places would think him to be the damned soul.

A pair of black shoes stopped underneath a ledge and a pair of leather gloves would pick up said cast away math textbook to put it in a old tatty doctor’s bag as eyes cold as ice looked up to the ledge where mere hours ago a boy cast away his last tethers to said world.

If you had someone’s true name, you could search for them, if you hand something they touched you could search for them, sure Timothy Hunter proved hard to find but this book, this book was sadly a door to him for he touched it, he left his penmanship in it, even his disdain tainted said book with energy.

It was about getting the Books of Magic, or a source of magic powerful enough to keep the door between the Prime and the Black open long enough for someone’s physical form to pass. If Nick’s astral could not breach it, then his physical form would for it was a plane of souls, damned souls and a corporeal body was...powerful. A united unit.

The fact that Nick was following some Cold Flame lackey and was going to snatch their prized possession right from their hands....well it was just the cherry on the smug cake.

Tim would be ambushed but before a single word could be uttered a pair of leather gloves appearing from nowhere snapped a neck, it made such an awful sound.

Said hands surrounded by the Darkness would push through and a man would step out of the shadows.

“I’d watch where I dropped my books if I was you kid” Said leather gloved hand now held the math book.

“Awful lot of things a magi can do with such a possession”

The darkness and shadows bled around him, it was so tempting to just grab him.

He was so small, but no. Flighty little foals run faster when scared.

“Poor Obediah- you really have gotten too old for these little games. Tut-tut” Nick nudged the dead man’s face with his foot.

“Anyway- should you ever want to get better at hiding from the Cold Flame-” Nick held his hand up really up high with a calling card flicking it until dark embers danced for it to form right...by Yoyo hovering...

“Have yourself a good evening kid” he nodded his head and would leave.

It was to stare temptation in the face...and walk away from it. That was true power.

I may or may not lean into an idea of throwing some eldritch horrors onto my lady Jadus.

I've been straying away from Eldritch for so long (never read the Lovercraft books) because none of them were what I'm looking for. Something relating to dark horrors, vampirism, coven/witches, demonic and shadows.

most I come across were faceless entity, tentacles, body horror, cthulhu etc which isn't what I'm into.
