if i think about the hunger games in peeta's perspective i WILL start sobbing
#imagine you're a boy who's going to die. you're in love with the girl you've been watching from afar. you know your fate.#you just want to help her‚ but then there's the announcement and she's here in front of you‚ kissing you‚ risking her life for you and you#think‚ i could live and i could love. you think she loves you when she hands you the berries‚ when she puts them in her mouth.#then you both survive and you go back home and nothing is real anymore. you have nothing. no family. no friends. no love. just an empty#house. a drunk for a neighbor. the love of your life walking into somebody else's arms. you think‚ i survived the games. i could survive#this. and you also think‚ i should've bit down on those berries‚ should've felt the juice burst before i died.#and then the third quarter quell announcement rings in your ears and you think‚ she will live and i will die as i should have in the first#place. the girl you love kisses you on the beach and somewhere you heart stirs and your mind revolts and you savor every touch she has ever#given to you‚ in front of the cameras and off. because you are a tribute and you are always being watched and snow's presence looms and#you think‚ i know she cares. but you get taken. you get drugged. you get tortured‚ your mind altered. the girl is a mutt‚ a murderer. she's#everything you despise‚ your mind stirs. your heart revolts. you gain more awareness but cannot distinguish reality from fiction and you#have never known katniss' love. the war ends. you heal. you come home. you plant primrose for her. years down the line‚ you grow in love#more than you thought possible. but some days‚ you cannot tell fiction from reality so you ask the love of your life‚ you love me.#real or not real? and she says‚ real‚ and kisses you.#and you sigh and kiss her back and revel in this. a home. a life. a love.#lit#the hunger games#everlark#otp: real or not real?#katniss everdeen#peeta mellark#text#tais toi lys#thgpost

i have always loved the scene in mockingjay where katniss smooths back peeta's hair. because of just how intimate it is. and because of how it parallels the cave scene in the first games.
the one where peeta naturally brushes the loose strands of katniss's hair off her forehead. and even though katniss is unsure of her real feelings towards peeta, she likes this affection so much that she doesn't want him to stop. and he doesn't stop. he keeps stroking her hair until she falls asleep (thg, 265).
and when katniss looks back to their time in the cave, y'know, the one where they were in a death arena, all she remembers is how happy, how hungry, and how close they were (mj, 250). because peeta fully extended his love and affection towards her, even when she was still confused about her own feelings.
and so it only makes sense that katniss, as they are forced to go through the battlefield of the 76th hunger games, moves to recreate the intimacy and affection of the first games.
because now their positions are reversed. she is the one who is sure of her love (mj, 135; mj, 141). and peeta is the one unsure of his feelings towards her (mj, 231). and so, katniss is the one to extend her love and affection to peeta by stroking his hair (mj, 257). and cleaning his wounds (mj, 274). and kissing him (mj, 267).
and i have often thought about how the instance where katniss strokes a wave from peeta's hair indicates that his hair was not buzzed. unlike all other soldiers sent to the war (mj, 214). because, if peeta and katniss did make it out of the war alive, district thirteen still wanted to have them look similar to who they were before the capitol tarnished them (mj, 214).
because while coin might have sent peeta into the warzone with katniss with the intention of killing them both, she is not going to miss an opportunity to use them for all they are worth as propaganda. and that is sick. and frustrating.
but i still think that there is a little part of katniss that is grateful that his hair still has a little wave. grateful that the war wasn't successful in taking everything from her. grateful that her precious boy with the bread was inching his way back to her (mj, 259).

dark justiciar shadowheart is genuinely so interesting to me as like... a facet to her character. like it really hammers home how desperate she is for shar's love and affection (+ the validation and love from other worshipers of shar). like in a lot of ways I get that it seems shocking to others / some fans because it really does contradict some of the morals we see her express BUT imo that just speaks to the level of desperation she feels. her comments on how shar "must" love her for her to survive the shadowcursed lands, or the bit where she talks about shar nurturing her and loving her and sounds... almost more like shes trying to convince herself more than shes trying to convince you. theres a bit about other sharrans not thinking she had earned her name, and of course the mother superior not thinking she was ready / worthy of being a dark justiciar. like shes just so completely desperate to feel unconditionally and securely loved, and to earn the approval of others that shes entirely willing to injure herself in the process (as well as.... the people who actually love her, of course).
not to mention that mechanically, afaik, she can only end up there if shes encouraged to by the player. ie... she needs to know someone else approves.

“It would be nicer if he were easier to hate.”
This line is from Gale about Peeta but I think is also why so many fics flatten Gale to a one-dimensional asshole. (And this goes for other fandoms with nuanced triangles too.)
It’s simpler when he’s easy to hate but it’s far less interesting. So let’s look at the canon relationship between Gale & Peeta:
Firstly, I feel like we forget that Peeta admitted he’s been jealous of Gale for years. That’s all we get, the one line, because Peeta’s handling it privately and for all his chatty charm he’s an actually a pretty internal person. “Entire worlds locked away.”
So we know he’s jealous but we don’t know how much it eats him up or what he’s thinking. That’s all up for interpretation. We do know it’s a prominent enough in his mind for Snow to latch on to in Mockingjay.
Gale is also jealous of Peeta but both boys recognize that Katniss has autonomy and she will be the one to make the ultimate decision. Their refusal to objectify her means that they don’t and can’t hate each other. They aren’t in conflict. Neither has stolen the property of the other. Neither has wronged the other. Katniss is a person, not an object, and Katniss is the one they appeal to rather than fighting each other.
During the series each boy has a chance to claim Katniss but they both hate it because they want to be freely chosen. And each boy chooses to go to great lengths to set the board back up so Katniss can make her move on her own time. (Peeta with the fake engagement “he wanted it to be real” and locket. Gale in D13 setting out to rescue Peeta and then hoping he gets over the hijacking.)
Gale/Peeta canon moments:
Peeta’s best Gale moments are in Catching Fire around the whipping scene: throwing his lot in to protect Gale, carrying him home, staying to watch him recover, quietly accepting Katniss’s rejection while watching her wedding dresses go by on tv—a daily reminder of his lost dreams.
Gale’s are in Mockingjay: recognizing Peeta is speaking under duress on tv and can’t be held responsible for his words, turning down Katniss because she’s drunk on grief, risking his life leading the rescue mission to bring him back, explaining to Katniss that Peeta isn’t seeing her clearly, rooting for Peeta’s recovery, protecting Peeta when they storm the Capitol, caring for him by bringing him water at night and keeping him company.
Also just: Peeta asking Gale to kill him in Mockingjay. Gale not doing it.
I didn’t get the books out so I’m writing this from memory, and I haven’t honestly paid much attention to Gale so I probably missed a lot but there’s So Much Depth to the Hawlark rivalry.

i love stray so much and sometimes i think about it a little too deep and make myself sad. we get three main characters that help our little stray kitty find their way back outside. All three of these characters come to see the cat as a friend, and each of them want to get outside with the cat. But each of these characters give up that dream so that the cat can finally get outside,,,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Momo has been trying to reach their friends who left for outside for a while. Finally after meeting the your cat, Momo has the chance to find the rest of the outsiders, but part of the way through the sewers, you come across a door that needs to be opened manually meaning only one of you can get through. Momo insists you go through and find the other outsiders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You help Clementine break out of jail and tells you that theres no way both of you will make it with sentinels on your tails. She tells you that you're an outsider now and that you have to go on without her because someone needs to make it outside. So Clementine locks the gate and distracts the sentinels while you escape and continue on you venture to outside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In order to open the city, B-12 destroys their own software knowingly. But it's so that you can get outside. B-12 started the journey with the intentions to carry on the memories of humanity and make sure humanity is not forgotten. But after travelling witch your cat, B-12 finds that the robots and the cat do that well enough already. "But, I see a future in the companions. And you."
They all make a sacrifice so that the cat can continue and get back outside and i just :')

i ABSOLUTELY want to see the behind the scenes/extra symbolism discussion of the blackjack fic!!!!!
YEAH OKAY TIME TO RAMBLE ABOUT CHOICES THERE, i'll stick it under a cut for people who want to read this ficlet without me explaining a lot of the choices. also because it's LONG.
so let's start with: blackjack as the game is a deliberate choice. like, i considered poker, and then realized i like blackjack more. to explain in full i've gotta go into a little detail about the setup.
this is because the setup here is that the watchers, the listeners, grian, and martyn are all "writing the narrative", effectively. they are putting their own wants and desires for what the next life series will be on the table and betting for it. abstractly, grian cares about the gamified life series (the specific rules), the watchers care about the character interactions and the drama of it all, the listeners want it to be meaningful to them and to feel like it has a point, and martyn, though he doesn't really realize this, is here because he is the one who keeps MAKING half the life series narrative, and the one who plays into it the most. they also represent grian as the guy who makes the rules, the watchers and listeners as the audience and the way it sometimes wants the same things and sometimes is opposed to each other in what they want, and martyn as the guy who plays directly into the story.
in blackjack, these people aren't playing against each other. like, okay. blackjack as you play it "properly" can have many people at a table, but you'll notice that if you try to use an odds calculator online, there's no way to calculate odds based on what any hands but yours and the dealer's are. that's because blackjack decks in casinos are normally like, at LEAST four decks shuffled together, to make counting cards harder. besides, the people at the table with you aren't your opponents anyway! everyone at the table can beat the dealer and get double their bet back. or, in this story, everyone at the table can beat the dealer and get their part of the story guaranteed to be in the next game. they aren't COLLABORATIVE--there's no way to help the other people at the table either! but they aren't ADVERSARIAL. they are not, inherently, working against each other. they just happen to be all playing against the same dealer.
so anyway, the dealer here is death, because one, as death points out in the ficlet, literally the only inevitable constant in the life series is death. the story will INEVITABLY end with everyone dead. everyone is playing against death to get the kind of story they want, because ultimately, what will REALLY shape the story is those deaths. in the life series, death ultimately decides how the story goes, and you're betting against it to tell the specific story you want.
that's also why death wins the tie. its my understanding that a tie in many casinos actually just means you get your bet back; you lose nothing, but you gain nothing also. however, this game is rigged. you can't 'tie' death; it's death. if you die, it's game over, after all.
death is also the dealer, however, because it is PREDICTABLE. one strange quality of blackjack is that the dealer's moves are entirely deterministic. sure, you don't know what the dealer's actual hand is, since they keep a card hidden--that's why it's gambling--but a dealer in blackjack, by rule, must ALWAYS take a hit if their hand is 16 or lower, and must ALWAYS stay if their hand is 17 or higher. no exceptions. as such, you can guarantee the dealer will always have at least a 17 at the end of a round, or they will bust. death in the life series follows rules. you know when it's coming. it's more a matter of whether you can stop it.
that make sense as a metaphor? okay cool.
anyway, more details! so the specific cards dealt here don't matter so much as the hands; i don't know cartomancy someone else will have to tell you about the symbolic meanings of a standard deck of cards. what i CAN tell you is that the hands everyone got and how they played them was deliberate.
so, first: basically everyone made what is arguably the "correct" play. yes even martyn. we'll get to that. however, what happened with each of them represents their personality.
grian doubles down. it's grian, of course he does! for those of you who don't know how doubling down works: when you have a hand of 9, 10, or 11, it is reasonable to double down. the dealer deals you exactly one face-down card that you don't reveal until the dealer reveals their hand, and you double your bet. the reason these specific numbers are the ones you double down on is because, mathematically, you can't bust on these in one card, and you're somewhat more likely to get a winning hand with them than not. however, doubling down means you can't take another hit! you have no way to know if you'll beat the dealer or not after you do so! after all, if you, say, are like, grian, you'll most likely need at least a 7 to beat the dealer if you double down with a 10. you're guaranteed not to bust, sure, but you've doubled your risk anyway.
of course, grian is exactly the kind of guy to double his risk in a situation where he has nothing to lose. of COURSE he doubles down. and of course he loses; he doesn't bust, sure, but that face-down card isn't nearly high enough to win.
(grian also had to lose so i wasn't directly making a rules prediction, lol. him losing leaves it somewhat more ambiguous whether his rules requests of 'enforced red name bloodlust' and 'no life trading' will be true or not.)
the watcher wins the hand outright, standing immediately. a 19 is a pretty good hand, and drawing a 19 outright is ABSOLUTELY a situation where you never take a hit. the watcher also wins outright because "bonds that are seemingly unbreakable" is, in fact, a life series standard. the interpersonal relationships are like, the whole story. of course that gets to beat death and make it in! however, it's not like the watcher gets a blackjack; it's no SO guaranteed that it gets a 21. there's always a chance of going wrong.
the listener busts outright. there is no guarantee of your death being meaningful. sometimes, you just get unlucky in the hand you draw.
then, there's martyn, who has a 16. when the dealer has a 7, the dealer is MOST LIKELY to have a hand that will beat a 16. that's a strong card for the dealer to have! however, 16 is a hand you are statistically most likely to lose with in that scenario. the odds are already stacked against martyn; if he doesn't hit, the dealer will almost be guaranteed to win, but if he DOES hit, he's far more likely to bust than he is to win. so, what do you do? most odds calculators tell you to take the hit, because it gives you slightly better odds of winning, but there are ALSO multiple people who will tell you NOT to take the hit, because "not busting" can sometimes be all you need in order to win. you CAN'T win if you bust, after all, and in blackjack, if you bust, you hand over your bet before you even determine if the dealer busts.
(i've seen some people say you should just surrender outright if you have a 16 and the dealer is showing 7 or more; that's the kind of situation that is.)
martyn, of course, takes the hit, because martyn's the kind of guy to risk the statistical odds he loses then and there. he's rewarded for it, sort of! he gets an 18, which is a decent hand! he then holds, because you have to be actively stupid to take a hit on an 18.
unfortunately for martyn, he doesn't actually escape the odds entirely. he tells a good story by taking that risk, sure, but death comes for us all in the end. also, martyn had like a 75% chance to lose anyway--like i said, 16 when the dealer is showing 7 or higher is just about the worst possible situation to be in while playing blackjack. i went ahead and gave death a 3 there too, because sometimes the world is unfair. sometimes if you take the risk that would make you seem actively stupid, that risk would have paid off. sure, 90% of the time it wouldn't, but one out of a hundred, maybe, if you had taken the hit--
anyway. i could probably say more but this is already long enough. gestures. CARD GAMES WITH STAKES AND MEANING OUTSIDE OF THE GAME ITSELF MY BELOVED.

When you backread through a fun conversation you had with someone for hours an angel gets its wings
#I was talking to my brother about Norman doors and I had fun in my UX class and he was telling me about demon cores and the trolley problem#in his class. AND I remembered to take my meds today so I can feel every cell in my body. i can feel the neurons rubbing together#and yesterday I infodumped about the specialists bullseye chart to crow and how it ties with witch hat atelier#WHICH I MANAGED TOGET THEM TK READ IM SO HAPPY. I MAKE SQUEALING GUINEA PIG NOISES EVERY TIME THEY TELL ME WHAT THEYVE READ SO FAR. AHH#i might not even be scratching the surface with witch hat there are so many themes i could not possibly fathom or go over my heasd#and thats what makes it so exciting there are so many spaces in between that you can fill with your thoughts and i. i#waves my hands around manically#for anyone interested in my insane ramblings. the bullseye chart is from are we all scientific experts now by harry collins#in my own words its basically saying everything we know about anything is a game of broken telephone#and it discusses how information gets lost in translation between experts and laymen including things that arent in control#one of the main points was how things that happen between experts are complicated including debates and findings#that you can only really understand thru research and experience in that field and cant be smoothly shared without it being reworded#and risking some of those key points. or even concepts that are hard to understand that cant be shared at all#like if you tried to tell me about how DNA works using words scientists are familiar with but i am NOT- i risk missing concepts that i need#to understand to know how it works on the level you understand. or i risk having it reworded and understanding it but not on that level#AND IT DOES TIE TO WITCH HAT THE WITCH AND NORMAL FOLK COMMUNITIES I PROMISE. ITS SO INTERESTING#anyway i spent hours reading back thru that conversation and i might as well admit it goes for almost every fun conversation i have#and it might be the 20mg of adderall in my body but i am in such a state of peace and love i have to verbalize it. ahh#yapping

Alison knew full well when she bought it that she would be the one to play Risk with the Captain and whomever else he could convince dared to challenge him. Nine hours of taking orders. Phew! If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.
As for the ghosts:
Fanny would say “ladies don’t play war games.” All the while glaring at Alison.
Thomas would immediately declare it tedious and decline but stay in the room to keep Alison company in case she needs support.
Julian would be up for it but get caught cheating and forfeit. Deciding chess was more his speed.
Humphrey would pretend to be sleeping.
Pat would try to stick it out, but when Captain would start taking it too seriously, he would fake incompetence just to finish the game quickly.
Kitty would try to change the game into something “more fun …like Candyland.”
Only Robin would be left. Cunning, stubborn and under estimated, his most formidable opponent.

Intertwining Threads
Binah x Reader Lobotomy Corporation Pronouns: Gender Neutral Warnings: Descriptions of blood and torture
~ * ~
The life of an Arbiter revolves around torture, as is fit of the prime assassins of the Head. Whatever is ordered shall be done, they all had vowed at the start of their service; threats, collection, removals, extermination. It’s all part of the cycle. There’s nothing to be done or changed, so why not relish in the destruction? Garion was no different, her hands stained with blood and the countless lives she had torn apart. Even when she was gutted and splintered, laid out in a chair to have her brain picked and prodded; when she was forced to cling to her dying breath, listening to every crack of bone with iron red dripping from her mouth; when her name was taken away and replaced by something dull and false so he could control her better, she remained the same, as an Arbiter mimics the City. Binah. What a fitting name. Meaning to contemplate, to understand. She could do nothing but think, after all, being locked away beside a well of madness, alone. Yes, she had much time to contemplate, her task of drawing water slowly driving her insane, as there was no one who could do this but her, no one else who could withstand it. This was her punishment, for everything. Hah, punishment. An Arbiter being tormented instead of doing the tormenting. How laughable. The people around her come and go, living and dying and returning with each new cycle. She’s the head of some department or another, except she can’t leave, not ever. The doors were barred and shut for her, for all of them, long ago.
The agents and clerks beneath her always await her instructions. She used to purposefully lie, watching with sharp eyes as they fell screaming to the monsters or the sounds or the images flashing across their eyes. But he disliked that, sending her back to the room with the well and making her draw more and more water as a form of discipline, and soon she found no joy in watching people crumble, only boredom. They all call her Binah. But she’s not Binah, she’s Garion, and will be Garion forevermore. It’s difficult to tell the time down here amongst the machines and shadows. The only signs are any new employees, fools who join the ranks of the facility because they are very stupid or very desperate, or perhaps a bit of both. She’s long since given up the need to remember any of them; all her energy is spent maintaining the last threads still attached to her sanity, the ones that never seem to snap even when she wants them to. Perhaps that’s another layer of this punishment, to be forced to bear it with lucid eyes. The Arbiter feels nothing when an Abnormality breaches containment, sitting and listening to the shouts and cries for a few moments before getting to her feet. A fight would be a welcome break from the well, anyway- even at her weakest she’s still a formidable opponent for even the worst creatures from the depths. But perhaps staring into the waters has made her sloppy, her skill degrading along with her mind, because the Abnormality is only caged after a long gash is opened on her arm, the blood dripping thickly onto the floor. She exhales. There is no pain. She is an Arbiter, after all, unafraid and strong.
Yet it still stings and burns. “Binah!” A voice rings out and her eyes open with a slight jolt. The sound is vaguely familiar, something heard in passing and no more, but somehow it feels different- concerned, frantic, warm. Her head tilts in its direction, gaze landing upon one of the more recent hires assigned to her department, looking worried and a little fearful at the sight of her blood. You fuss over her wounded arm and she can do nothing but let you, staring blankly as she’s pushed in the direction of the medical bay, the other agents scattering and the memory of your voice filling her head. Binah. It was so gentle, the way you said it- But she’s not Binah. She’s Garion. But who is Garion now, after being chained to an endless web of madness and despair? Nothing but an empty husk. The Head of Extraction has begun to linger near you once working hours are over. You’re often the only ones left in the main room at that hour, your pen constantly scratching against whatever file you’re currently working on, and she remains a short distance away, watching carefully. Occasionally you can smell the tea she drinks, your lips twitching into a smile at the lighthearted thought of your Sephirah truly enjoying something before there’s the sound of footsteps and a light clink as she sets her teacup on the table beside you and asks that you do not mind her sitting so close.
You blink, looking up from your papers and into those dull black eyes, and you smile. Her heart thumps once, merely humming and taking a sip of her tea to disguise her surprise. It’s easier around you, being locked in the depths. The few strands of her sanity become stronger, untangling themselves and weaving into an organized display in your presence- how? You must have some secret ability, some tool used to manipulate the senses, for not even bloodshed and slaughter could make her feel so warm. And your voice, when you speak that name she’s been given- ah, she almost feels like she could smile. Almost. Not quite, but almost. The sight of the Extraction Sephirah and a certain employee becomes commonplace; some even call you her favorite, but when you ask she merely tilts her head, a faint glint in her usually cold eyes, and presses a finger to her lips. It was only natural for him to notice, for the change in her behavior to catch his gaze and hold his attention in an iron grip tight enough to make him panic. You’re the cause of this- some random, low-level employee who gave a fragmented Arbiter a spark- and with rage in his voice he threatens her and you in one sentence, scrambling for some semblance of control. Her eyes narrow almost imperceptibly, the air seemingly dropping a few degrees from her flat, icy stare. She is strong, can handle any torture or agony or suffering- but you are fragile, a bird she wants to cup in her palms and whisper her sorrows to and keep safe, safe for as long as you live and as long as you breathe. Her own blood she is willing to see spilled, but not yours. Never yours.
She is Garion- … No. She is Binah. That’s right, you called her Binah. She is Binah, a broken, useless shell of an Arbiter- and yet you say her name as if she’s a star in the night sky, bright and beautiful, giving her hope and warmth. So she is Binah, and it’s her own name, not for anyone to control. And Binah, the ex-Arbiter, speaks to him in a smooth, cold voice. “You will not hurt them, for I shall go mad if you do. The insanity that creeps into my skull and eats away at my senses is only restrained by an Arbiter’s will. It can and will crumble at any moment, within the blink of an eye, and the world will turn to blood and dust. So you will not hurt them. You cannot, unless your wish is to lose everything.” Binah. To contemplate, to understand. Yes, now, finally, she understands.

Whumper invites people over to their place, maybe a work dinner or a holiday party. The trick is, these people aren’t aware of Whumpee and all that, so what to do with them?
Option A: Force Whumpee to play along with the nice domestic charade. Whumper gets to show off their lovely new partner and be as handsy with Whumpee as they like. Whumpee knows if they break character, if any of their bruises or scars show, if anyone starts acting the slightest bit suspicious…they’re in for pure hell. Whumpee forces themselves to smile as Whumper kisses their cheek and tells them to go serve everyone dinner
Option B: Lock them up somewhere inside. Mind games are fun, but this is minimal risk. Keep them tied up to the bedpost and gagged, lock the bedroom door. Keep them in their little basement cell and let them know if they make one move to escape, one tiny noise that anyone upstairs hears, they’ll be begging for death. Whumper might forget to feed them that day, but they’ll manage. If Whumpee behaves maybe they can get the table scraps as a treat
Option C: Keep them tied up somewhere outside. Why even let them stay in the house for this event? Whumper could lock them in the backyard shed, or maybe even tie them to a tree in the woods. Hopefully it doesn’t get too cold out there, or the party doesn’t run too late. Whumpee might not be let inside until the next day
