Danny Phantom meets Superman. More accurately I should say that Danny Fenton meets Clark Kent.
Let me make this clear cause people seem to forget this: superman is smart. Clark kent is a very intelligent guy. Hes an INVESTIGATIVE journalist. He works with Lois Lane whos a multiple Pultizer prize winner and you know damn well that Lois wouldn’t work with anyone that cant keep up with her in both wits and smarts. He’s good at his job and in some comics he gets Pulitzer Prizes from some of his articles as well. Dude is dumb but he’s smart if you get what I’m saying. High Int. Low Wis.
With that in mind, During an assignment by Perry White, Lois and Clark meet the Fentons in their Amnesty residence to get some quotes on an article that discusses “Everything we thought didn’t exist is now real. Superheroes, Aliens, even Vampires, so why do we not Believe in Ghosts?”
Clark Kent spots Danny and notices instantly that MANY things are wrong with this child. His shoulders are hunched in a way that is intentional and tensed. Like he doesn’t know if he should fight or flee. His eyes are darting around and constantly taking in their surroundings like he’s waiting for something to barge in. His heart is beating far slower than it should. The kid intentionally makes his chest rise and fall but he’s not breathing in any oxygen. All of those are concerning but they can happen in metas. The thing that isn’t normal is that Clark can’t hear any of Danny’s other organs working. Like the kid is a revitalized corpse and his body only thought to bring back half of its needed functions.
So Clark does some digging. He doesn’t want to tell any of the Justice League because this isn’t a Superman job, this is a job for Clark Kent. He gets some help from Oracle and with her word that she won’t say anything to batman, He agrees to update her regularly about the kids situation.
Oracle sends over some VERY concerning documents from an organization called “The Ghost Investigation Ward”. Oracle tells Clark that she’s working on tipping off the Bats and Birds so they can help dismantle the organization.
While sifting through the documents Clark comes across a profile of a “Danny Phantom”. As I said, Clark isn’t stupid. There is definitely a profile of Danny Fenton as well since he’s the son of two world renown ghost hunters. He puts the two and two together and uncovers just the horrible treatment that Phantom has been receiving from his parents, the government, and his peers. Clark is outraged and can’t just stand aside and let this kid suffer. So he makes another trip to the Fenton residence under the guise of needing another quote and sits Danny and Jazz down and tells him that he knows of the terrible lab safety, the immoral experiments his parents do on the regular, the neglect of the kids in pursuit of scientific discovery. He knows and he wants to help. Clark tells Danny and Jazz that there is an apartment available right nextdoor from his and that he can help them get to a safer location and apply for emancipation.
The Fenton kids are shocked at this guy and his immensely kind heart. Danny knows something is up though. Something is up with Clark Kent. He looks like all his life would be spent in the gym when he isn’t at work and yet Danny can’t find a thing on Clarks interest in working out. His baggy clothes somewhat cover up his muscles but his frame is far too wide to be hidden. Clarks heartbeat is slightly faster than the average persons. No human eyes could be that startlingly sky blue. And Danny knows that he has seen Clarks face somewhere but he cant put a pin on it.
The Fenton kids agree and they get brought to metropolis and the emancipation case is no problem with the evidence Clark managed to collect. The kids get the apartment next to Clarks and Clark helps them grow and get better mentally and situationally. Clark knows that in a way he’s trying to make up for his neglect on Connor but he still knows that helping these kids is the right decision.
After a month or so, Clark and the Fenton kids have a rhythm of meeting at each others apartments, getting doted over to make sure that the fentons are well fed and have everything they need and are getting settled into their new life.
Clark hasn’t told the league. Oracle keeps her promise to keep the Fentons out of Batman and the Justice League’s radar. Clark knows that he will have to tell them soon eventually. He knows that things like this wont last. He tries his best to keep these kids happy and support them how an actual caring parent should act.
A few months into the Fentons stay in Metropolis on a cool autumn afternoon, Danny is sitting on a beanbag chair reading a ratty old book that Clark lent him as Clark is typing away on his computer writing up an article for the Daily Planet when Danny looks over to Clark and says,
“I’m Phantom.”
Clark pauses typing and shoots a small smile towards danny, “I know.”
Danny nods in relieved acceptance as Clark straightens up from his hunced over position on his computer.
He pulls back his shirt collar slightly to show the blue suit and red cape. “I’m Superman.”
Danny looks at him and smiles, “I know.”
They both just sit and continue reading and writing with soft smiles on their faces. Comforted at the exchange and that it’s finally out there and eachother knew.
After a while Danny’s obsession gets to be too much. He tells Clark about it and that he has to find a way to sate his obsession of protecting and Clark accepts that it was only a matter of time and invites him to meet the League.
When Superman brings Danny to the Watchtower, saying that the rest of his fellow superheroes were shocked would be an understatement. The Man of Steel and this ghost kid are talking like a father and son.
To say that Batman was pissed that he wasn’t informed of this child is also an understatement. But there is also some amusement and respect under that frustration. Superman managed to keep this kid under wraps and didn’t even alert Batman. Superman smirking and saying under his breath to him “Looks like the World's Greatest Detective isn’t so great huh?” Makes Batman respect the man even more.
In the Watchtower, Danny meets up with Teen Titans/The Team/Whatever They’re Called Now, and meets Conner. Conner is understandably pissed and spiteful that Danny got to have Superman as a father figure.
Conner knows that Superman treating Danny this way is definitely a way of him trying to make up for the faults and breaks he had with his parental relationship with Conner. he agrees with himself that he shouldn’t hate Danny for having Superman as a Dad and the two get along like tinder and matches. Connor still has a grudge against Superman don’t get me wrong, just not as much as before.
Sometimes while the League is in battle, Superman likes to just look for Danny and watch him hold his own against world ending threats. Danny is now truly confident and it’s no longer a facade. He’s no longer hunching into himself to look smaller. He laughs more often now and seems to be genuinely happy. Superman fondly looks at his son as his kids eyes flicker with green fire as he says a shitty ice pun and freezes Metallo in his tracks with ghostly ice.

While I can't imagine most Tumblr users have even heard of this 52-year-old Otto Preminger movie:
SUCH GOOD FRIENDS (1972): Annoyingly disjointed comedy-drama, based on a 1970 Lois Gould novel, about a 30something Jewish woman (a miscast Dyan Cannon) who reaches her wit's end when her boorish husband Richard (Laurence Luckinbill), who'd been threatening to divorce her, ends up in a coma following a routine surgery, leaving her to grapple with his array of condescending, useless doctors and her discovery of a "little black book" showing that Richard has been persistently unfaithful.
Elaine May's script for the film adaptation (written under the pseudonym "Esther Dale") has some funny smaller moments, but doesn't hold together at all as a story, largely defanging the protagonist's ornery frustration (which is the whole point of the novel) and only timidly approximating the book's caustic humor and sexual bluntness. Director Otto Preminger's apparent discomfort with the material also allows the tone to waver queasily between absurdist comedy and dreary wronged-wife melodrama, particularly toward the end. It has its moments, but the point has been missed — skip it and just read the book instead.
Absurdly, Roger Ebert's 1972 review credits Preminger and May for the film's "vulgarity" and for making "a sort of black-comedy version of Lois Gould's serious novel," an assertion credulous online sources like IMDb continue to wrongly present as fact. One can only assume Ebert hadn't actually read more than the jacket blurb of the bestselling book — which is much more vulgar and far more laceratingly cynical than anything in the film — and that whoever added that IMDb trivia hasn't read it at all.

Byerly Vorrutyer Character Designs

BYERLY VORRUTYER of Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga
Tried to go for a rapidly-aging prettyboy with the gothic heavy lidded eyes (idk how to describe the eyes I’m talking about) and a face that reads as male while having something slightly feminine about it. A face that smiles often but is composed, cool. Slightly wavy black hair that is either shortish, chin length, or slightly shorter than shoulder length (I haven’t decided yet 😅)
Designing faces is not my strong suit so I am working backwards from a few references I like. Will probably simplify artstyle, slightly lengthen hair and mix with a dash of Professor Venom from OK KO (for that little bit of haggard twink energy) to creat the final design.
References:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wardrobe:
Materials: silk, velvet, ruffles lace, detailed embroidery, military piping, sheer cloth, fur — echoes of beautiful luxurious handmade traditional artisan clothing- but all a little to gaudy and cheaply produced - the barrayaran aristocrat version of fast fashion. Androgynous and galactic styles occasionally thrown in to add to mystique
-SHIRTS: silk shirts // shirts with poofy or frilly sleeves // patterned shirts // sheer shirts // velvet shirts // shirts that are tucked in the pants but so unbuttoned the entire chest exposed
- SUITS: velvet suits that absolutely reek of cologne // sleezy yet sharp barreyaran style black suits you might smoke a cigar or play pool in // pastel suit for daytime garden parties
WARDROBE ACCENTS
- bigass fur coat - maybe even almost a midieval king robe
- several offensively knock off fast fashionmilitary style jackets
- luxuriously patterned bathrobe
- see through shawl / wrap / night robe thing
- some gaudy galactic style outfits
- a few sexy or frilly dresses to piss off the family
- a few a casual / slightly more subdued blend of komarran, barrayaran and practical galactic clothing he only really wears at home (stuff he wears when he’s not preforming for an audience). maybe some sentimental pieces. What’s hidden beneath the camouflage.
- some bling: rings and earrings. A few broaches and cuff links probably not that many necklaces
EDIT: here are some reference collages I put together! Note that these references aren’t the exact items that he would have in his closet but rather there are aspects to each piece that I would want to incorporate into his design. Maybe it’s the cut of a sleeve, the silhouette of a coat, the way a robe drapes, the embroidery pattern on some fabric, or the general partied-too-hard vibes of a particular photo of a model.
Bastardized military jackets:

Neglige options / heavier nightfrobe options:

Bigass fur coat:

Shirts (please ignore the long blue scarf in the central image like wtf is that- the rest of the suit is nice tho):
Tumblr media
Party vibes:
Tumblr media
A lot of these aspects would then be mixed with my own head cannon for the rules/cuts of barreyaran mens clothing (I went to a library and spent a stupid insane amount of time looking through books with midieval, 1800s and 1900s men’s fashions and France, Russia, and Greece- + additional books of traditional folk clothings and textile patterns + several other books of historic military uniforms…. The process and choices were so long that I had to give up and just stop thinking about any sort of vorkosigan related character design for a couple months cuz my head hurt. - I will probably make another post at some point with more annotated collages and possibly some of my own drawings synthesizing the concepts, but uh not right now because I need a nap just thinking about trying to organize it all.)
If you’d like to see a little more of vorkosigan universe costume imaginings here’s my Pinterest board on it (kinda) https://pin.it/2rOoHsq it’s a extremely disorganized and from early hyperfixation days so none of my fashion history research stuff is there (cuz that was all physical book stuff) but uh, you can look at it if you want.
P.S.
If you have any feedback or critiques on the design so far, or ideas for how you think By should look, let me know! I love hearing other people’s interpretations 😊.
Photos of faces you think look like By, pictures of outfits that feel Byerly-ish, or direct quotes from the books about his demeanor or appearance are also welcome!
@starfishlikestoread it’s been approximately a thousand years but I’m finally getting around to that Byerly fanart! Hope you enjoy 😅

gen question but isnt dedegoon or dedesuka or whatevr a proship? ive seen some ppl calling it a proship cuz its abusive but your bio says proship dni so idk if its ok to ship or what (sorry im new to this)
hiya! thank you for your ask! it isnt and heres why
first of all i am /Not/ proship. i am not anti-anti or whatever either. what drives me to ship them is the fact theyre friends who like to be in each other's company. i like their sweet moments together. they bond over scamming an innocent population and bullying children. they're partners in crime. theyre besties who talk shit about others as a hobby.
Tumblr media
i also don't think theyre already dating. i look at their relationship and im like. you guys have some kind of weird crush on each other and you're also selfish assholes. they're in the world's worst situationship.
Tumblr media
"but dedede whacks escargoon a lot!" not only does escargoon get physical towards him too (the dynamic starts shifting in the dentist episode) but his "punishments" are often for a reason. escargoon is often very mean to dedede. in almost every episode he calls him hopeless or stupid or ugly or anything like that. and that gets him a whack. if i were dedede i'd do that too! it'd piss me off! having my lackey who i pay and who i consider my best friend insult me so overtly over and over LOL. but does escargoon ever try and stop him his evil doing? hell no! the guy helps him and gives him advice and ideas! he is NOT a good guy either. he loves being mean! he literally says it!
Tumblr media
of course escargoon cares a loy about him. pretty sure everyone is aware. i don't even need to compile all the times he runs after him or worries about his well being. one time he "left" after he realised he'd have to do all the waddle dee's chores and didn't want to do his job. guess who's shown tearing up when seeing what poor state dedede is in after being left all on his own. he's always protecting him and defending him (sometimes backhandedly) from other people. he holds dedede dear. it's obvious he does. he's an old man, he's not being manipulated into liking dedede. he genuinely cares about the guy.
Tumblr media
there are episodes where they bicker a lot but end up getting along, episodes where they're the best of friends and episodes focused on their resentment against one another. the show kind of yoyos with their relationship. it's not really anything to take seriously. if you get offended from their interactions you'd get a heart attack from watching looney tunes. the back and forth of their dynamic is part of the fun!
I *highly* recommend watching the original version of the show as the dub often replaces sweet lines they share with jokes that don't really hit the mark. it's a shame. (however i will give the dub some credit on occasion)
Actually, i have a [post] that compiles a lot of sweet screenshots of them together. it doesnt include the times where they hold on to each other in the cannons or in the whispy woods episode or when esxargoon said "isnt this strange? can't you feel we're striving apart?" and dedede says "what! that's ridiculous!" in a lighthearted voice. or when escargoon makes a joke about a late night drive being romantic and dedede just? laughs in agreement? there's a scene where they call each other stupid in the most friendly way ever. i actually have a handy twitter of fun scenes where escargoon gets away with some things (doesn't include when escargoon yells at him in the fireworks episode or orders him in episode 69), like saying *he's* actually the one in power because dedede isn't competent enough to reign. or dedede understanding escargoon's concerns of him becoming dumber than he is already.
they're just villains who are attached to each other and are a team no matter what.
Tumblr media
escargoon protects dedede a lot, and he cares about him more than what his job entails, but people tend to forget he's got a special place in dedede's heart too.
Tumblr media
dedede keeps an album of pictures they took together. he never threatens to fire him and, as far as i know, never even cuts his salary and is the only one in the castle to even have a bonus. he shares the food he keeps from the waddle dees with him in episode 93. he clarifies he doesnt want knuckle joe's monsters to attack either of them. he's fine spending large amounts of money on him. twice? he never calls him ugly somehow. he even thanks him for having put up with him for so long and serving him well when the world is about to end. and then he clings unto him because he's scared of dying alone. his way of showing affection is not the "im crying because i think you're in danger" type of way that escargoon shows a lot but it's there.
Tumblr media
Of course i don't think they're perfect gay rep. that's literally so stupid. you think im gonna look at two dumbasses who are bitter towards one another from what, a parodic, satirical children's anime from the early 2000s, and go "hmm yes this is what every queer couple should aspire to be this is peak lgbt rep"
If we're gonna talk about them how about we talk about some issues this show has that no one ever addresses. the colorism of the uv episode that is not put into question, not even by tiff, the moral compass. the rising sun imagery that is very much intentional as dedede is a caricature. the fatphobia? the fact kirby calls kawasaki and nagoya homos??? straight up???
people often blame episode 88, and yeah, it's not my favorite episode either. everyone's weird in that episode, not just dedede! yabui is far from empathetic, even the ebrums are disrespectful, and escargoon taunts dedede into chasing him for laughs and teases him about his old age. even at the end he teases him. i think it's one of those episodes that you just have to blame on the writers kinda like 89 (for example this one has got the right message but the execution is painful to watch. poor tiff.)
now, if 88 had changed their relationship it'd be a different matter. there are some sweet moments they share outside of their general "partners in crime" dynamic past episode 88 in my post actually! my favorite is the one where dedede has his arm around escargoon who's curled up like a cat while they're sleeping and the waddle dees are tucking them in from episode 91. it makes me so happy.
i could probably talk so, so much more about them. they're a huge comfort to me. however i don't trust just anyone with them. i am very much aware some people like them for the wrong reasons. but if you have a brain you can see where i'm coming from.
Tumblr media
the show makes fun of them because they're evil, self-centered cowards. not because they're "gay" or anything like that. i saw someone call them queerbait one time and i had to log off for a minute.
anyway, to answer your question, people who do not recognize their genuine attachment to one another are bound to have a twisted view of them. i don't like dedegoon because they're "toxic" or awful to each other. but because they're each other's best friends. that's all. it's fine if you don't ship them, too. i just hope i can prove to people that they do matter to each other and that they're friends :)

I think so many people miss a huge key to Kon-El and his relationship with secret Identities which is... he doesn't want one.
I see so many people saying he needs one, and I think even that is wrong.
For Kon the secret Identity is harmful, I mean I'd argue it is for Superman as well. Ultimately the Secret Identity is based in splitting the self into two parts.
One: The Superhero.
Two: The non-Superhero.
Now here's where the issue is. Superboy, Kon El, has fundamentally tied his real self to Superboy. Kon is the real person and Carl or Connor has to be a fabrication for him.
For Kon El to be Connor he has to pretend to be something he's not constantly... and to some extent, Kal does it too.
We can have a conversation about how he was as Superboy, how he drew less distinction between Clark and Kal, but by the time he's in Metropolis he has to redesign Clark. Clark has to be distinctly not a Superman, he can keep some aspects, his crush on Lois, some of his nerdiness, but Clark needs to be slouching, average, not as fit, not as heroic, not as good as Kal-El.
And that does massively fuck Kal up as a person. Read any silver age comic and it's Kal having an identity crisis on the weekly. Because a Secret Identity is isolating. Even if there isn't a real self or a fake self, the Secret Identity means that nobody can truly fully understand you unless you reveal the truth (and Kal's really opposed to that idea).
The Secret Identity does exist for a reason though, it's there to protect you from villains attacking your loved ones, or from constantly being assailed by fans, enemies, etc all the time.
And that's kind of one of the reasons that Cadmus was healthier for Kon.
Kon at Cadmus was (largely) protected from villain attacks, allowed to relax, allowed to be himself, and to feel safe in doing so.
Cadmus provided what a Secret Identity does without isolating him. He wasn't living in a big city, but he was surrounded by people who grew to be family and friends to him.
His mentor Guardian(Jim Harper), his parental figure of Dubbilex, Mickey Cannon who also got to be a dad to him. Tekka and Dr Roquette who were friends around his age.
Like he became surrounded by people who would look after him and care about him, he didn't have to constantly hide elements of himself or pretend to be something he isn't.
(Also important to note that Cadmus at this point were back to being full on good guys, while they weren't as rad as Kirby's DNA Project, they were distinctly not the shady government agency of early post crisis [to the point that pretty much everyone but Guardian and Dubbilex had been removed from their position]).

My proof that MAwS Lois Lane and Luz Noceda could canonically be the same person!
Tumblr media
(Spoilers for My Adventures with Superman)
Sorry for the click-baitey title, but I really think there’s something here.
So in the most recent episode of MAwS, episode 7 Kiss Kiss Fall in Portal, Lois gets abducted by The League of Lois Lanes, a group made up of other Lois’s that was founded by Lois Prime; the first Lois to discover the multiverse. Members of this elite force are Lois, Lois, and Louis.
Tumblr media
Later on, Lois looks through the multiversal archives and sees there are other Lois’ that are more successful than her. She sees Lois’ from all eras of animation and comic books, each different ethnicities and animation styles compared to her. One Lois actually looks an awful lot like Sora from Kingdom Hearts, keyblade and cropped zipper jacket to complete the look.
Tumblr media
My theory/head cannon is that Luz is just another multiversal variant of Lois, one who instead of meeting Superman went to the Boiling Isles and met witches and demons. After all, like Louis, Luz is a name close enough to Lois that she could be considered a variant of Lois that was Dominican/Puerto Rican instead of Korean like MAwS’s Lois is. Now you’re probably thinking “this is a bit of a stretch,” but there’s another reason why this came to mind.
This episode we are introduced to the show’s Mr. Mxyzptlk, a self-proclaimed chaos god with the ability to warp reality and wield magic. He’s “just a little guy” who wears purple robes, has pointed ears, and enjoys sowing chaos for fun. Sound familiar? It should, bc that’s basically the description of our favorite space cherub, The Collector.
Tumblr media
And before anyone says Lois can’t be Luz!What about Lumity?” To that I say TOH is a universe where Lois never met Clark. Luz is bisexual, so I’m a world where she never meets Amity, I’m certain she’d fall for the hunky alien with a heart of gold and the ability to fly.
What are your thoughts?

My collection of the wacked-out dates and times on the phones in maws so far, in case any one is as deranged about this show as I am
In ep 1, the only hint of a date we get is that their first day of work is on Tuesday which like ok great (side note: Lois, why did you write your boss's contact name as Lois in your phone??)
Tumblr media
But then in ep 2 we start to see what will soon be a repeating trend of Monday May 9th, meaning that it's been a full week since they started at the office I guess??
Tumblr media
We also see that it's 5am when Clark is at his parents house after getting the suit in which I'm going to assume they actually meant 5pm bc it is most definitely the end of the day and not the start of one
Tumblr media
Also, at the beginning of the ep Clark mentions that they're "here before work", but then 5 minutes later Jimmy's phone shows that it's 10am, suggesting that the gang doesn't even get to their internship until after 10am every day??
(also, the view-to-like ratio on the flamebird vid is wack, my head cannon is that Jimmy hacked it)
Tumblr media
After ep 2, we don't get any more info on dates until ep 5 (unless I missed one) but we immediately start out with a shot of Jimmy's calendar showing that squatchin' time is on the 17th and 18th*
Tumblr media
but in the same scene we get a shot of Jimmy's phone showing that it is most definitely Monday May 9th (again)
(also, Clark's alarm goes off at 6am in both ep 1 and ep 5, it's nice to see some continuity for once) (even if it's been established that the gang doesn't get to work until after 10am rightttt)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Lois mentions Clark was at the Daily Planet on August 3rd, which I guess suggests it's been a full year since episode 2, and it's now May 9th of the next year??
Tumblr media
Overall the continuity is completely off the rails and I love them for it. Keep me on my toes maws, make me question everything!! I always get a lil chuckle looking at the phones, it's one of my fav things to look out for on rewatches.
And on one final note, the time that Jimmy got on the bus was 9pm, and then when he drops his phone getting "kidnapped by bigfoot", the phone also reads 9pm Monday, May 9th. Jimmy stops time confirmed?!??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*edit: ty to @seafoamstatice for pointing out Jimmy's calendar!! Yet another interesting wrench in the continuity plotline hmmmmm

This could all be a reach but this felt like it resignated with him the way I thought it did.
Tumblr media
Given the context we are shown, Mike is being emotionally and physically distant with both El and Will at the front of s4.
With Will, it's obvious. He gives Will a half ass hug and briefly acknowledges the painting that he has been lead to believe is for someone else, maybe for a girl. Then, until it's later revealed he's actually been hyperfocused on Will the whole time, he doesn't seem to acknowledge Will (aside from sneaky glances, almost falling into Will's lap after he gets vomit green socks)
With El, it's less obvious. He greets her with a hug and a kiss on the lips but the flowers are physically in between them and he quickly acknowledges she's squishing her present. This is a strangely anticlimactic airport reunion scene, especially for a pair who hasn't seen one another in almost 200 days. Especially for a couple that was so physically affectionate at the front of the last season.
"From Mike" gives me the ick. This feels very much like he is doing things more from obligation rather than devotion. They've cannonically been together for over a year or even longer, why is he treating his gifts for her like they're an obligatory school Valentine so someone doesn't get left out? Yikes.
When Will confronts him about El's book of letters from him he gets defensive, "she's my girlfriend, Will" that means that he believes letters have romantic implications but him not being able to say 'Love, Mike' in literally any of them is a decision he consciously made repeatedly. No show of affection via the letters, not even casually.
hE's aFrAiD oF LoSiNg HeR. He literally lost her. It was explained to him that his family, his friends, and his entire hometown was in danger and El was going to get her powers back. Specifically doing that while in the hands of people they spend years trying to hide her from. And he throws what might be the last thing he ever sees from her, in the trash. So in my personal opinion, being afraid of losing her is a lie.
"If I would've said that thing, maybe she would've taken me with her" he can't even say it behind her back. This statement also implies that it feels like an obligation, not a desire. Everything he says behind her back to Will feels like this.
The Superman/Lois Lane analogy is actually the first time his angst about El feels genuine. "What if after all of this is over, she doesn't need me anymore." But it's less about romantic implications and more about how Mike seems to think he's only worth something if he's useful to someone. Plus, she did need him at the roller rink, after the skate attack, during their argument and he gave her nothing. He didn't comfort her or try to understand her side of anything. He said things that he felt should comfort her and starts to deflect responsibility when she confronts him about the letters.
My perspective feels confirmed when he confesses his love to El at the pizza shop. He had literal days to weigh his relationship with her, figure out the right things to say, decipher how he felt in order to create the perfect speech to win her back and what he gave her was just reiterating what Will implied she wanted to hear in the van which completely contradicts the argument that M!leven had in the first place.
His love confession contained so many lies. Lies that El, and not Will. Knows all about.
"I'm sorry I don't say it more" He said it once and not directly to her, in a room full of their friends and only said that because they weren't listening to him about her over using her abilities because the people arguing with him didn't literally see her "die" like he and Lucas did.
"It's not because I'm afraid of you, I've never felt that way. Never." There are multiple instances where he has been afraid of her, one of which was the front of this season and she called him out for it. "You think I'm a monster too"
"I feel like my life started that day we found you in the woods; I knew right then and there that I loved you and I've loved you everyday since" you mean where you, Dustin, and Lucas loudly talked about sending her back to pennhurst the following day and then, when you found out she could help you with finding Will and treated her like garbage up until she literally saved your life?
"I love you on your good days, I love you on your bad days" except he didn't take her side or try to comfort her about Angela until the next day even guilt tripping her at the dinner table. "She didn't look fine" and doesn't do a thing to make her feel better.
"I love you with your powers, I love you without your powers." Not once in this entire season did he talk about who she was without her powers. Every discussion tp or about El has included her powers and how both of their worths are tied to them. Every. Single. Discussion.
"I love you for exactly who you are" she's been lying to him about who she is without her powers for the entirety of her letters.
"You can do anything, you can fly, you can move mountains." He has never seen her do either of these things, this is just him talking out of his ass in attempts to reach her. This just comes off as some weird motivational speech on par with Jason's bullshit speeches that don't actually mean anything. That part specifically parallels Papa. But regardless, if he had paid as much attention to El's emotional responses at the start of the season as he did with his fight with Will at the Roller rink, he would've understood that she doesn't like her worth consistantly being tied to her powers.
With Will, the day after their confrontation at rink o mania, Mike knew exactly what to say and how to say it to make up with Will. Even though they had a long period of time without speaking.
I know I've said a lot of this before but I have a theory that Mike feels obligated to El instead of being in love with her. He might love her but it feels as if he's more in love with the idea of her. The idea he's built of her, and not who she is and because of everything she's done for him.
I don't think Will is the only one making vieled confessions.
"If I would've just said that thing"
He thinks their problems begin and end with how he didn't say he loved her but he doesn't even seem mad at himself for not saying he loves her. He doesn't acknowledge that he accidently made her feel bad about herself by being unsympathetic about Angela. He doesn't acknowledge that she feels different and it makes her feel like she doesn't belong. He does however, acknowledge that her being different makes him feel worthless. It's no one's fault but concerning.
It's just strange for people to accept that he loves her because he says it but it sincerely doesn't feel like it.
Especially, when you start comparing all of this with how he's treated Will throughout the entirety of the series. Mike Wheeler is far from perfect, has made many mistakes for sure and is capable of making more. But, it truly feels like he knows that he doesn't love El the way she wants. The way people think he does. And small moments like the gif above make me feel validated in this theory.

You Suit Me . . . ~Chapter One
Tumblr media
// Rabbi Milligan (Patrick Milligan) x *OC
*AU second daughter of Donatello Fadda
Summary: After the ‘double cross’ that ended the Yiddles family, Rabbi Milligan is taken in by Donatello Fadda and grows up with the Fadda family. While living in the Fadda household, Rabbi is befriended by Donatello Fadda’s youngest daughter, Noemi Fadda (AU OC). A romantic relationship develops.
Warnings: Some mentions of blood and gore
Note: Somewhat follows the progression of the show (Fargo, Season Four) but will take a hard AU turn eventually. Essentially, a ‘secretly dating’ troupe!
_
A quick visit with Loy Cannon, that’s what Rabbi had said and yet, Noemi Fadda waited with an apron tied around her waist in the Fadda family dinning room long after her father and the others were meant to return.
It was Sunday dinner and all guests—save for her mother and herself—were running late.
Her mother, Chianna Fadda, had resigned from waiting and took to her bedroom with a glass of wine. From Noemi’s speculation, Chianna Fadda did that a lot these days. Noemi suspected it had something to do with her youngest brother, Zirominu—or “Zero”—being sent to live with the Cannon family. Noemi considered her mother to be handling the separation from her son a lot better than she could have handled it. Noemi imagined carrying a baby for nine months, many sleepless nights and early mornings, raising a child, feeding it, watching it grow into a precious little boy and then, her father simply plucking that child from existence in your family home. Where does the love go? Noemi felt a sinking feeling in her chest whenever she thought about her baby brother and his current predicament—being forced to live with strangers all these months.
A pleasant distraction arrives in the form of someone entering through the back door near the kitchen. Rising from her seat, Noemi leaves the dinning room to go towards the clatter of the screen door. She finds Rabbi Milligan and “Satchel”—Loy Cannon’s youngest son—arriving home.
“Where were you?” Noemi exclaims. “Dinner is cold, mama’s upset!” Noemi looks towards the ceiling with her hands spread out. Though she gripes, no one hears. Rabbi Milligan is midway through instructing Satchel to go to his room and wait for him while he talks with Noemi alone.
The situation looked very serious. Any qualms Noemi possessed for being stood-up on a dinner she spent the majority of the day preparing flee when she watches Satchel leave and Rabbi look to her very gravely.
“What?” Noemi asks.
Though Rabbi feels the need for it, he refrains from touching her.
Instead, Rabbi gestures Noemi to come near him with a slow flit of his hand.
“We have ta’ talk,” gravelly voice to match that look he gave her.
Noemi approaches Rabbi as he pulls out a chair for her at a small two seater-table in the Fadda family kitchen. Taking the seat across from her, Rabbi rests his arms on the table as he begins, “there’s been’a accident.”
“What happened?” A hitch of concern in Noemi’s voice as she sits with Rabbi. The fear—the anxiety she felt made her feel like doing anything but sit. Her father traveled with quite the entourage of men and yet, only Satchel and Rabbi returned home. She squirms in her chair as Rabbi slowly licks his lips and prepares to tell her more.
“Your brother is fine, as is everyone else, but your father’s been admitted to the public hospital; he’s lost a’lot of blood, but ee’s stable. The doctor is keepin’ him a few days for observation.”
Noemi looks neither relieved or nor alarmed to hear all of this from Rabbi Milligan. Perplexity is her sole expression in the Irishman’s eyes.
“What kind of accident was dad in?” Noemi presses him. Hearing a statement like, ‘your father had lost a lot of blood,’ is no news to easily digest.
“Ah, yea.” Taking a breath to gather his words, “the car was at ‘n intersection near the school, some boys were playin’ with toy guns, one of them must’ve been a pellet gun.” Rabbi’s eyes shift from Noemi to his hands on the table, uneasy with the task of notifying the family of his boss and keeper. “The gun went off, hit your father in the backseat, ‘ee has a neck wound but ee’is being treated for it, like I said.”
Filled in at last, Noemi does not know how to respond to the news of her father’s ‘accident’.
While Noemi sits in a stunned silence, Rabbi finally does what he wanted to do before. He reaches across the table and collects Noemi’s hand; a rare move for him, considering his place beneath her in the household. “Would you be needin’ assistance in tellin’ your mother?”
Noemi Fadda had been preparing her family’s meals since she was old enough to turn on the stove all by herself. With cooking, came lots of cleaning and caring for the house, a role expected of her, especially as she was not yet married and out of the house like her sister, Naneeda. Noemi’s hand felt very cold and dry in Rabbi’s warm grasp.
Swallowing quietly to reanimate herself, lost in her thoughts as she was, Noemi straightens up in her seat, a kind of quiet excitement and exhilaration hits her when Rabbi—or ‘Patrick’—had taken her hand and held it.
Shaking her head, Noemi assures, “no, I can tell her.”
As Rabbi lets go of Noemi’s hand, Noemi rises from the table and takes a step past Rabbi when suddenly she stops and turns back to him.
Impulsiveness possesses her like a soft and lonely ghost as the young woman eases down onto Rabbi Milligan’s lap, sitting on him as if it were the most natural thing in the world to do.
Alarmed but resisting futilely, Rabbi wears a look of concern as he gathers Noemi’s slight shoulders in his hands and looks into his secret lover’s eyes, preparing to turn her away. He whispers an urgent reminder of their boundaries, “Nomi—“
Nomi—that was his nickname for her, something that started back when they were kids.
“—no one is here,” the young woman interjects in an urgent whisper and smiles as she wraps her arms around his neck. Tilting her head, Noemi Fadda kisses Rabbi Milligan.
The pair shares a romantic moment that soon melds to one of desperate comfort. They stole them, every chance they could get.
Rarely with a instant where it was just them two, Rabbi buries his face in the crook of Noemi’s neck as they embrace one another and hold each other for what feels like a blessed eternity, though it was only a few cherished seconds.
Patrick Milligan hugs Noemi like he has never been hugged before and maybe he hasn’t—not before her, at least.
Reality brings Noemi Fadda pushing herself back to her feet, straightening her dress and her apron.
Before she can leave the room, Rabbi gently catches her by the wrist. Carefully, he unknots the apron ties at the small of his lover’s back.
“Thank you,” Noemi whispers in elated gratitude, watching him from over her shoulder.
