i think one of the biggest draws with supernatural is that it gives us a chance to watch the heroes make the wrong choice. it’s RARE in action-adventure tv to see the protagonists do the selfish thing-- it’s all about being a self-sacrificial hero, saving the world at the cost of your loved ones, being willing to give up your life in service of a greater cause... and what we see with sam and dean, despite them being self-sacrificing in their day to day life, is them consistently choosing not to sacrifice each other. in season 2, dean sells his soul, and in season 3 he goes to hell for it; season 4, sam pursues his revenge mission against lillith, and he isn’t talked down from it. the fact that they generally think they’re doing the right thing doesn’t change the fact that they WILL do the thing that “heroes” traditionally don’t, namely prioritizing each other’s lives over the consequences. it’s so satisfying to see them run into burning buildings to save strangers and then turn around and give up that cause because their brother is dying and they won’t carry on without him (faith, croatoan, a million other examples...) it’s everything to me
