Full disclosure, I'm still on chapter 6 but I wanted to say a few things:

Arthur isn't a mindless killer. If he is mass murdering civilians, that's your choice.

Arthur knows that pain is not currency that you can exchange, and causing it only builds a debt - the kind he can't pay off.

He says it himself, "Revenge is a fool's game" - He writes constantly about his remorse in the journal.

Led by Dutch, the Van Der Linde gang have been chasing the feeling of living by their own terms so much that it's killing them. Pursuing that high has only left them to run forever, from those who want to clip their wings of freedom for the sake of law.

The O'Driscoll and Cornwall feud is a scapegoat for Dutch to get revenge for himself and his pride, he uses his charismatic rhetoric to sway the gang and justify all his actions. If they don't obey, they get named and shamed. Dutch labeling the gang as a family and treating them as such has conditioned them to know not to disappoint him, especially Arthur.

Arthur was taught not to bite the hand that feeds him, even when he wasn't fed.

The days of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor are long gone. Their way of living is outdated and they're running out of land to run away to.

This pursuit of freedom, once idealised, has become a desperate attempt to survive in a world that doesn't want them.

Their hearts have always been in the right place, but their guns were misguided by Dutch.

That loyalty has killed them.

So I was just rewatching the end of episode 5 once or twice (no particular reason), and realised Ed specifies really clearly when he says about fishing being man vs beast: 'I'm the man and the beast is beneath the sea' and that sentence is so meaningful coming from a man who for all his adult life has thought of himself as a kraken or a monster who deserved to drown.

He is healing through fishing 🎣 And the crew are healing through shared creative projects like the unicorn leg and the bizarre cursed suit raid.

one pet peeve of mine in founders-era fanfics is when madara's whole,,,, everything is solved by izuna just being there

like maybe this is just me, but i don't think izuna surviving or even coming around to the idea of a truce with the senju would've been enough to keep madara from the path he ended up on.

izuna wasn't the reason he left - he was definitely part of madara's issues, but he wasn't the why. even if izuna had stuck around, and even if that had been enough to keep the uchiha clan from losing their faith in madara, i think he would've still come to realize konoha wasn't what he'd hoped it would be.

best case scenario, i think izuna's survival might've caused madara to stick around a bit longer, but i don't think it would've lasted. honestly, even then, that might've just made the inevitable break-up between madara and hashirama even more agonizing (particularly for izuna)

it's a fun idea to play around with for sure, but frankly i don't think canon!madara could've ever been 'saved' from that path. certainly not if the hidden village system ended up getting set up in the same way.

Something about q!Phil being so supportive of q!Missa, never letting him be left out of the family picture and never wanting him to be considered an absent parent. He keeps pieces of him around, like on his backpack, and that slime armor for Missa is still there in the kids' room. That loyalty does not waver.

But that doesn't mean that Philza doesn't feel the effects of being thrown into single parenthood for two children, of feeling a little lonely because their family pictures aren't completely full. That little spiral Phil had last night about being a single parent is pretty much proof that he's fine with Missa being away but he's not fine, you know? Yes, Phil is slowly allowing more people in over time, but that just isn't quite the same, is it? Because at the end of the night, Chayanne still says goodnight to only one dad, and Phil goes to bed by himself in a bed that's too big for one person.
