im such a lover of pre calamity zelink purely because any interactions or affection between them is that of two kids with the weight of the world on their shoulders trying to navigate confusing emotions — it’s just so innocent and unsure and RAW. like just imagine them when they’re close and having to figure out what that overwhelming feeling in their chest is whenever something as simple as their hands are close. what are they yearning for? what is the heart asking them to do? why do they feel so upset when their hands move away?
because realistically they’re not going to have many references, nobody’s going to sit the princess down—who is supposed to be unlocking her powers—and explain to her the intricacies of crushes and the human desire for physical touch, and the same goes for link. their human side is Completely ignored as we already know, any emotions that don’t pertain to the calamity are discarded and seen as ridiculous. so they’re left to explore with each other but there’s Roles here and rules that come with, are they really allowed? but then the roles start to disintegrate the moment they grow closer, the moment they’re more friends than princess and knight, and they both start getting curious.
with how much restraint link is bound to have and has shown previously, it’s definitely zelda who starts to push boundaries a little and touches him more, but he’s her knight and while he’s unsure of how permissable this situation is he lets her do so because that’s his princess, not that he doesn’t mind it or anything
so it starts as simple as a hand on his bicep at the sight of danger or somewhere new and of interest, something that makes him tense for a moment but then breathe and relax because it’s her and the touch is kind of nice. then it turns into hands on his shoulders from behind when he’s sat by the fire, when she’s just come back from pestering the local wildlife and he looks up at her and she grins in a way that makes his stomach swirl. it grows to zelda threading wildflowers through his hair and combing her own fingers through it so she can put it back up for him, daring to rest her chin on his shoulder to ask what colour flower he wants next and her hands are on his arms and goddess this is close. it’s to the point where she hugs him whether happy or upset and it stuns him, but he slowly wraps his arms around her every time and feels the way she melts against him. where she’ll take his hand into her own and fidget with it—because she’s a destructive fidgeter otherwise—bending his fingers, tracing parts of his palm until she’s memorised the shape of him and he lets her because he knows how anxious she can get. it doesn’t even tickle that much from how calloused and damaged his hands are.
people notice this, too. impa raises an eyebrow whenever she catches the tail end of zelda squishing his face for fun because she does treat him a little like a puppy (though she would argue it’s because he lets her) and she merely waves a dismissive hand. the guardsmen are regularly reminded that link is her favourite soldier from the way his name rings off her tongue like wind chimes, from the way she runs to him first and foremost after hunting a nearby monster hideout, especially when she argues that holding his face is necessary to make sure he’s okay. the guards merely grin. king rhoam doesn’t see it though, goddess knows how he would feel about her knight distracting her from her duties, but urbosa does because zelda has to get parental approval from somewhere. urbosa sees the way zelda looks for him in the group when she’s not by his side, almost making sure he was still there if she wanted him, and urbosa smiles. she sees the way zelda’s hand sneaks its way into his whenever she’s scared or nervous about something, even though she’s surrounded by the champions, and how his hand tightens around hers so she knows he’s going nowhere. it’s almost enough to bring a tear to the chief gerudo’s eyes, to know that her little bird is in safe hands whenever she isn’t around, to finally see her smiling and laughing and not shivering, tear-stained and weak in the middle of ice cold water, begging and pleading into thin air. when she looks at them, she sees two kids finally being able to embrace some of their youth and find comfort in one another, and it gives her hope. hope that they can still be naive teenagers together despite the circumstances they’re all in. and idk i just think that’s pretty neat

@your-local-ruebit-hole-detective ok i’m sorry but. i will answer your question.
age of calamity advertises itself as a prequel but in reality it’s a fix-it au with slight differences and writing that’s pretty bad but i have grown to appreciate it for how insane it goes sometimes.
the actual plot is that as a child zelda used to have a little egg-like guardian robot that she was forced to leave behind as she grew up due to her father’s pressure etc, and when the calamity happened this little robot saw it and traveled back in time with the goal to prevent this and protect zelda, creating a branching off timeline. there’s also an extra villain who is this prophet (???? this games writing isn’t good enough for me to tell you what his deal is exactly) who worships ganon and for most of the game works with the yiga to bring him back, except he’s more insane than them and works directly with malice and also sucks at his job because when he finally gets to ganon he unceremoniously dies and everybody’s like “yeah we have no idea what this guys deal was”.
the one significant change that doesnt have to do anything with time travel shenanigans is the fact that link doesn’t find the master sword as a child, but instead gets appointed zelda’s bodyguard for his genuine skill and then finds the master sword during one of the in game missions. despite this, revali still hates him, and often times when justifying this revali cites reasons that are literal complete opposites of how his grudge was characterised in botw, cementing revali’s characterisation as just a cunt for no reason. it’s great.
the significant time travel related change is that when all the champions go into their divine beasts and fight the blights a portal opens and the new champions (teba, sidon, riju, yunobo) get teleported in and help defeat the blights. zelda also doesn’t get her power by protecting link from a bunch of guardians, the scene still hits the same beats of link fighting things off so zelda can run away except in this game how it happens is that the insane prophet shows up and literally summons all the blights against link which makes the scene ten times more insane.
throughout the game the yiga show up regularly, often times with master kohga himself showing up and being the overall goofy guy he is, except he also has a hunk of a body guard who’s name i genuinely can’t recall. multiple times in the game kohga gets defeated and said hunk of a body guard throws him over his shoulder says “it’s not over yet” and walks off carrying kohga like a sac of potatoes.
in the original game, when shit starts hitting the fan the yiga stop showing up as enemies and at some point in the story kohga shows up without said hunk of a body guard, says “the prophet is insane and the calamity actually isn’t a good thing as we’ve discovered”, highly implies that the reason for his change of heart is because said prophet killed his hunk of a body guard (who literally. doesn’t show up again for the rest of the game mind you. he legit died), and is like “yeah the yiga will help you. after this whole thing is over we’ll go back to being bitches to you but rn let’s just kill this ganon guy and then walk our separate ways”. the fact that the calamity being a bad thing throws the yiga’s whole ideology and purpose into question is never addressed.
the dlc makes the death scene explicit, also making it a parallel to zelink by, again, making the bodyguard fight all the fucking blights so that kohga can escape. the scene literally opens with the body guard limping as they try to escape. it’s so much a parallel to zelink it’s insane. im afraid do not know what the hell they were cooking.
some other choice moments from this game that go insanely hard for no reason:
1. the first portion of the game is dedicated to zelda recruiting all the champions, and when it comes to recruiting revali he for some reason assumes it’s an attack, and sends all the rito soldiers to fight the intruders off. the rito do not question fighting some random hylians one of whom is literally zelda. the mission ends with a boss fight of link vs revali, which only ends without them killing each other because zelda runs in and goes “stop???? the fuck ????”
2. the entire game has cute bonding moments with the botw champions meeting their idols and getting to spend time with them. that is, except for sidon, who spends the game saving his older sister in a parallel universe which he has to leave by the end of the game, meaning every scene involving him has him on the brink of eleven hundred simultaneous mental breakdowns. the dlc adds a scene where the little sidon who is native to said parallel universe gets to interact with botw sidon, and botw sidon tells him that he’s going to grow up big and strong and will protect his sister, and the entire time he tries really hard to not acknowledge the fact that they are the same person, and that mipha is his sister too, presumably because nobody wanted to animate sidon ugly crying. in that scene you can literally see his soul die in his eyes it’s great
3. the dlc features tulin, god knows why. i don’t know how he got there or what he’s doing. he’s just there.
4. you can make noble pursuits in the game and drink them before missions for a buff. pre-gaming defeating the calamity is a thing, i cannot stress how much it is a thing in this game.
5. there are two separate animated cutscenes where link eats rocks on screen. only one of them involves the gorons, the other is a scene where link is being discussed and as the characters talk about how great he is in battle the camera pans to him eating rocks, seemingly on a dare from the other soldiers, who all surround him and are immensely excited by the fact that he is actually eating rocks.
6. the dlc features a scene where zelda gets to cook. link is horrified the entire time. she does not belong in the kitchen. she belongs anywhere outside the kitchen. the dlc also gives her the master cycle as a weapon. she commits vehicular manslaughter
7. the king gets a redemption arc, where he apologises to zelda only after she unlocks her power. the reason he realized he was wrong was because a sheikah relic that he confiscated from zelda turned out to be an ancient shield and it saved his life from a guardian blast. his apology is literal dog shit and right after it the game forces you to play as him for a mission. it almost made me rage quit.
8. thunder blight has an attack where it just swings its hair at you
9. when you finally fight calamity ganon he doesn’t have the form of the spider ganon from botw or even the boar, he is instead a buff guy made out of malice. literally just the shape of a buff non descript guy made out of malice. his boss fight is endless and the entire time you’re just beating the shit out of a non descript buff guy shape with a stick.
10. there’s a cute little side mission called something like “girls beauty contest” (in reality they all beat the shit out of each other for the title), where you’re only allowed to select female characters. that is, female characters AND gorons. think of that what you will

Welp, uh, technically it's still Age of Calamity's birthday where I'm at so here's a little fic of AoC Arranged Marriage AU!
---
(Basically the premise of this AU was that when Link was revealed to be the chosen hero Rhoam had basically married him and Zelda together; they would be in their early 20's in this AU of course)
---
Zelda rubbed her aching forehead, trying to still the racing thoughts in her mind as she glossed over the different designs of wedding gowns. Quite a few of them were too flamboyant for a wedding; decorated with so many jewels and layers that she could see herself dying in one of them. The others didn't even look like wedding dresses; too blue or red or gold with only fragments of white to even signify they were for marriage.
She set the different designs down, sighing defeatedly. Not one of the dozens of designs spoke out to her. It was like they were not even for her.
Well, of course not, she thought with a scoff. This isn't my own wedding. It is for the kingdom's sake.
It had been such a struggle to get the Master Sword from Korok Forest. So much resources and time were spent trying to free the forest from the monster's clutches. If Link hadn't already been with them, and if he wasn't already the chosen hero... the people of Hyrule would've thought of it a waste of Hyrule's militia. Already so many lives had been lost from the previous battles...
A knock on her study door drew her from her thoughts. She quickly gathered the drawings, a curse slipping from her mouth as some fell to the floor, before beckoning the knocker to come in.
To her surprise, it was her fiancé coming to visit. She found herself staring at him as he came in, fully donned in the dark blue and red of the royal guard's uniform; a temporary garb until she could finish the champions' apparel, but one that was long overdue. Even without the hilt of the Master Sword peering over his shoulder, Link had long deserved the royal guard's uniform (at least in Zelda's opinion).
Link looked at her curiously, before looking down at one of the dropped drawings at his feet. He bent down to pick it up, but before Zelda could protest he was already snickering at the design.
"They are aware it's supposed to be a wedding dress, right?"
A smile crept up on Zelda's lips, and before she was aware she was already chuckling. "Oh, and that's not even the worse of them," she giggled, motioning him over to the larger stack. Together, they nitpicked at every little design detail, laughing at the questionable design choices.
"Oh, but this one isn't too bad," Link said, picking up a drawing of a flamboyant wedding dress that was an odd mutated mix between a ballgown and a military uniform.
"It isn't," Zelda admitted, "but it just doesn't... fit me, if that makes sense."
Link squinted at the drawing, then looked at Zelda and back at it again. "Yeah, you're right," he relented, placing the drawing back in the pile.
"There's quite a few of them like that," Zelda said, flipping through another pile before bringing out a dress. "Like, I love the skirt on this one" -- she brought out another drawing -- "and I love the sleeves, but not really the neckline." She sighed, leaning into her chair. "It would make this ordeal a lot easier if I could just design my own."
"Why can't you?" Link raised an eyebrow. "You're already designing our champions' outfits. Why not make your own?"
"You really think I should?" Zelda asked. "But... Father wouldn't allow it."
"And why should he stop you? It is your wedding."
Zelda gave him a look to challenge that statement.
"Okay, maybe not really. But I've seen the designs you made for our garbs; they're amazing, Zelda."
Zelda felt her cheeks grow hot, though her heart felt soured by the notion. She only had to make the champions' garbs out of tradition, not because she really wanted to.
But... it wouldn't hurt to try.
Zelda reached over and grabbed her notebook, quickly flipping through all of the horrible sketches of flora she tried to doodle, before finding a blank page. She was about to grab a utensil, but her hand knocked the cup over. Goodness; she was a mess today.
Link caught most of the utensils before they escaped her desk, and the ones he did he picked back up and placed them in the cup.
"Thank you," Zelda said, before grabbing the one she wanted and turning to her page.
She had begun sketching out the base lines for the dress before she realized she had an audience watching over her shoulder.
"Hey," she said, looking up at him with a mischievous smile. "If we're going to treat this like an ordinary marriage, shouldn't this be a surprise to you?"
Link chuckled. "And what part of this marriage is ordinary?" he teased.
"Oh, you--!"
Zelda sat up from her chair and began playfully pushing Link out of the door. "It's bad luck to see the wedding dress before the wedding!"
"Isn't it 'to see the bride before the wedding'?" he joked along.
"Same thing!"
The two laughed as she finally pushed him out of the door. "I shall see you at dinner, then!" he said, twirling his hand around and stooped into a bow. Zelda agreed, still giggling, before closing the door. She sighed contentedly; it always felt good to laugh.
She returned to her notebook, continuing sketching out the rough lines. Using elements from the other sketches as references, she designed a dress she became proud of. It was flowy, and nature-like; the skirt of the dress reminded her of the petals of a silent princess, the sleeves were long and elegant, and the neckline was lower and allowed more comfort to breathe. She couldn't help but also design her hair into a long braid, making a note of it by the side to also put specks of flowers (preferably silent princess replicas) into her hair as well.
When she was finished, she took a moment to admire the dress. She could see herself walking down the aisle now, holding a bouquet of flowers, looking up to meet the man that she would be married to...
Zelda frowned; no doubt that Link wouldn't want to be married to her like this. She would always imagined that she would have time before marriage, to know the person long enough to love. Though she and Link had gotten along quite nicely, from the time that he had been appointed her personal guard they had only known each other not even long enough to be friends. All of this, no doubt, was forced on Link as much if not more than was forced on Zelda. As the princess, she at least had no choice on the matter of her duties. Link had a choice... until he got married to her at least.
It felt unfair to Link. Already his life was thrown away the moment he picked up that sword. He should be married to someone he loves, not a princess he was only sworn to by duty.
Like Mipha, Zelda thought, remembering how the two looked at each other when they had visited the Domain. Oh, goodness, Zelda realized in shock, holding a hand to her mouth. Had her father really stopped a relationship between Link and Mipha with this marriage?
She shook her head. No, her mind reasoned. If he was really distraught over losing Mipha, then he would probably not even talk to her, let alone laugh with her.
But... that didn't mean that she could approach Link on the subject one of these days.
Zelda picked up the drawing, taking a deep breath. All that was left now was for her father to approve her design.
