So I really liked your pairing of LQR/WRH/Lao Nie and after seeing wwx's parents in the last episode of the donghua it got me thinking, How about WRH/WCZ/CSSR? WRH maybe saves them in yiling and they end up hitting it off (WRH might do it in the beginning just spite jfm by stealing his former best friend and crush) and the Wei family settles in nightless city, wwx grows up with the Wen heirs and wen Qing and wen Ning and that affects the events of Canon

(I wouldn't mind smut tbh if you want to include it, they're all hotties lol)

“I don’t suppose you can help with this,” Wen Ruohan said to Lan Qiren, who had the unmitigated gall to look amused at him, as if he’d brought this disaster down on his own head or something like that. “Aren’t you supposed to be friends with that awful -”

“Cangse Sanren and I are indeed good friends,” Lan Qiren said peaceably and tonelessly, possibly just because he was trying to annoy Wen Ruohan to death. “I am therefore very familiar with the fact that there is absolutely nothing I can do to stop her from proceeding precisely as she wishes.”

That was not what Wen Ruohan wanted to hear.

“You’re her friend,” he said, deciding to focus on the important part. “Take her away.”

“You’re the sect leader of the Nightless City,” Lan Qiren rebutted. “Order her to leave.”

Wen Ruohan couldn’t do that.

Well, he could. By all rights, he ought to have done it a month ago, when Cangse Sanren had first marched into the Fire Palace and said, “Oh, this will work perfectly! I love it, you’re so thoughtful!” and started rearranging the entire place into some sort of workshop for herself, possibly involving grain storage. He’d meant to, but he’d been a bit distracted at the time – Wei Changze had wanted to know what all the machines did, and he’d had an endless number of clever ideas on how some of them could be repurposed for things other than torture, some of which had been really very intriguing.

Anyway, it wasn’t as if Wen Ruohan had time to attend torture sessions any more, not with three loudly yelling children running around all the time. Wei Wuxian might be the youngest of the lot, with both Wen Xu and Wen Chao as his elders, but he’d managed in a very short amount of time to make himself the undoubted leader of the pack and spoiled beloved youngest all at the same time. There had even been avid discussions about how they would need to bring other children over to visit in order to better socialize the children. He’d already summoned some cousins over, Wen Qing and Wen Ning, which meant that soon there would be even more children…

It was a headache, really.

Absolutely.

Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren were driving him up the wall.

They were also regular visitors in his bed, something that would very likely rapidly stop being the case if he actually kicked them out of the Nightless City.

“This one’s on you, Hanhan,” Lao Nie put in, grinning wildly at him. Now there was one that was completely unmoved by the news of Wen Ruohan’s new relationship – everyone else had reacted, whether by Jiang Fengmian’s profound embarrassment, raging jealousy, and quiet fury, Jin Guangshan very obviously trying to calculate some way of using this to his advantage, and Lan Qiren immediately going over to question his friends’ sanity – and that was pretty annoying in its own way. After all, Wen Ruohan had really only invited the two rogue cultivators into his bed in the first place as a matter of spite, a way of excising his rage when he’d heard the rumors about Lao Nie potentially taking on a third wife.

He hadn’t expected them to stay.

He hadn’t expected to want them to stay.

Which he didn’t! They were a mess, each one worse than the next – Cangse Sanren was barely human most days, like some sort of feral demonic beast that had accidentally achieved human form and continuously forgot (thanks to her prodigiously bad memory) that she was supposed to be pretending to be normal, and Wei Changze was remarkably similar to Lao Nie in the sense that he’d never taken anything seriously in his life, except for the fact that his humor was lighthearted and unleavened by the hints of trauma and tragedy that lurked behind Lao Nie’s unbridled hedonism. There wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t let slide off his shoulders, forgetting a beating as soon as it was over…Wei Changze might be a lot less vicious than Lao Nie was, but he was reckless to the extreme, in a way that made absolutely no sense. Wasn’t he supposed to be a servant? What was he doing rushing out into the field with a sword and smile and absolutely no advance planning whatsoever? Even Lao Nie wouldn’t do that!

Anyway, they were a handful.

They were maddening.

They were the most interesting thing that had happened to Wen Ruohan in years.

“Your input is not required,” Wen Ruohan informed Lao Nie, who shrugged expansively. “Unless you have something constructive to add.”

“No, no, nothing constructive, you know me, I’m not built for that…but I’m glad that you’re happy.”

Wen Ruohan stopped where he was.

“I’m not right for you,” Lao Nie said, and even though he was still smiling, same as always, there was something sharp in his eyes – the same sharpness that had caught Wen Ruohan’s interest in the first place, like a beautiful dagger that you longed to touch even though you knew its biting edge might cut. “You know, I know, even Qiren knows it…you’re happy now, and that’s good. That’s all I wanted to say.”

Wen Ruohan wanted to say something.

Preferably something cutting, something about how it was too late for Lao Nie to regret – except he didn’t think Lao Nie did regret, because Lao Nie did not live a life of regret. Lao Nie had enjoyed their time together, had been as sincere and true as he was made to be and no further. But, and maybe it was because he’d never expected to keep Wen Ruohan for very long in the first place, he’d felt little sorrow at it ending, instead feeling nothing but joy on Wen Ruohan’s behalf at seeing him happy, even if it was with another.

Wen Ruohan didn’t understand that. He’d always loved too fiercely, too well; he’d always yearned to keep that which he cared for close to him, nearby, somewhere he could protect them and keep them.

Even Lao Nie…Wen Ruohan had been enticed by Lao Nie’s ruthlessness, his bloodthirstiness, his Nie sect temper tempered with a nasty sort of cunning that had made him remarkably successful at expanding his sect’s reach in the north, and he’d been flattered at how persistent the other man was in pursuing him. It was only later, when he’d gotten used to having him around, that he had started to feel jealous…

“They’ll be good for you,” Lao Nie said. His eye twinkled. “You could use a bit of chaos in your life.”

Wen Ruohan shook his head. “I’m trying to get rid of them,” he protested, but even he didn’t believe what he was saying. “They’re a menace. Especially Cangse Sanren – do you know that she’s literally doomed? I swear, I spend all my trying keeping her from getting herself killed…”

“Don’t you enjoy defying the heavens?” Lan Qiren asked, rolling his eyes as if Wen Ruohan were missing something obvious. “I would have thought that someone carting around a heaven-sent calamity would be a perk for someone like you.”

…it rather was, wasn’t it?

“Whatever. Fine. Leave it, I’ll figure it out myself,” Wen Ruohan grumbled, then turned his narrowed eyes on the two of them. “Now for something you can help with: My children need more socialization or else they’ll genuinely think Wei Wuxian is a good example of other children. Sect Leader Lan – you’re a teacher, aren’t you…?”

“Well, yes. But –”

“What a wonderful idea!” Lao Nie clapped his hands together. “I can send my two boys to Qiren to teach, too! And we can definitely bully Fengmian and Guangshan into sending theirs. It’ll be…oh, I don’t know. A regular summer excursion!”

“In my sect?” Lan Qiren asked, arching his eyebrows. “Why me?”

“Because you’re a teacher, of course. Anyway, are you saying you don’t want Cangse Sanren to crash at your place for a few months..?”

“She’s not going anywhere,” Wen Ruohan said at once. When both of them smirked at him, he scowled. “Even if I wanted her too, she’s not. It was a statement of fact, nothing more.”

“Then perhaps we should all come visit the Nightless City instead,” Lao Nie said. “It could be like a miniature discussion conference, except limited to the Great Sects – we could go night-hunting and such while Qiren teaches the children.”

Was Lao Nie proposing an orgy? He’d better not be proposing an orgy, not if he genuinely intended to invite Jiang Fengmian and his wife or Jin Guangshan and his to attend…

“Of course, if it’s focused on the children, maybe the adults aren’t entirely necessary to invite – well, except for you, as the host, Qiren as the teacher, and me as the person who came up with the idea…”

Lao Nie was definitely proposing an orgy.

“…I’ll see what Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze have to say about it,” Wen Ruohan allowed. But only because he thought that it was something they would very much like, and he’d been completely out of ideas on what he could get a couple as notoriously disinterested in material goods as a courting gift – he hated not being capable, that’s all it was. There was no other reason than that! “We’ll see.”

“Did I agree to this?” Lan Qiren asked, frowning. “When did I agree to this –”

“You can’t say no,” Wen Ruohan said. “I’ll set Cangse Sanren on you if you do.”

“…I see that I’ve agreed to this.”

Lao Nie laughed, Lan Qiren sighed, and Wen Ruohan…

Wen Ruohan resigned himself to keeping Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze around a little longer.

me and my friends @yuzanrath and @mdzs-owns-my-ass-i-guess were casually brainrotting today and we came up with a pretty funny prompt (who knows if I may eventually write it but I do really enjoy it and I don't write enough funny things) For some context, this prompt started as a joke where JC single-handedly invents non-sexual dual cultivation cuz he's so chronically single, but this is a separated idea more focused on wwx haha (no warning cuz no real pregnancies are had, just shenanigans)

TLDR will be at the bottom.

Let's say this is like, 2 years post-canon or more. So the 'juniors' probably aren't all juniors at this point but i'm still gonna call them that.

-wwx gets cursed with some sort of bloating while on a night hunt with the juniors but it doesn't start showing until the next day. wwx teases/jokes with the juniors about various forms of innocent touches/staring and points out he and lwj were holding hands the day previous before he left on his trip and kissed him goodbye and so everyone starts to believe he really IS pregnant from such a little thing. (the juniors are ofc horrified at the prospect of such easily acquired pregnancy AND FOR A MALE, and lsz is secretly excited about the prospect of getting a sib)

-Wen Ning (as part of the night hunting party who is still around rn) is kinda doubtful, but he also ends up believing bc the juniors getting excited (mainly lsz) is infectious. And, wwx really does have abdominal swelling; so, as is the theme here, he ends up believing too despite his doubts.

-lxc is informed via a junior and wwx shows that he is in fact not stuffing his shirt and lxc is stumped, can't defute, so decides it's best to go along with it for now just in case, as to not stress out the potentially pregnant brother-in-law.

-lxc and the juniors are babying him a little bit but wwx finds it funny and enjoyable so keeps it up for now since the curse is something he can easily fix and doesn't really hurt.

-LWJ comes home and at first thinks "wei ying what have u done now" but then sees the swelling is actually attached to his body and falls for it too, cue the doting husband who becomes his shadow. No more spicy food while he's 'expecting', no sex cuz he's too rough, no liquor bc bad for the baby.

-wwx handles this for a couple days, the super healthy food, lack of everything he likes, and a subtle pain in his gut from the swelling getting worse too quickly (skin isn't meant to stretch that fast) before he can't do it anymore and confesses that it was him teasing the kids and kept the joke going too long. (He cures the curse in front of him perhaps and lwj is just devastated but in his lwj way. That or LWJ cures it with something simple like cleansing idk)

-They tell lxc & lqr and lxc looks disappointed bc he likes children but mainly bc lwj is sad too (and of course lqr is celebrating oh thank god it was fake)

-they tell lsz & Wen Ning and that's the final straw, the sad subtle puppy-eye looking disappointment makes wwx drag the three on a journey out of the cloud recesses; They find a little bebe orphan to take in, perhaps they have a goofy journey of offering parenthood to orphaned kids who don't trust/don't want it before they find a local single mother died giving birth or something and they end up having a real connection with the baby, including lsz who gets insta attached, and so its decided one way or another that this is their baby.

-They go back to cloud recesses and the juniors are all like "WHERE DID YOU GO WHILE YOU WERE PREGNANT AND THEN LXC SAID YOU WEREN'T AN- OH" baby reveal. and thus wwx grins and the baby joke continues, says that he just had the baby etc etc and lxc was mistaken they just wanted a private birth or smth blah blah blah

-lsz immediately goes along with it because he is extra happy he has a little brother/sister now and he's feeling mischievous too, and says they need to take the baby to the nursery etc etc and wwx needs to rest (he is a bit tired tho after running around and getting rid of that curse n stuff)

-JC comes storming bc of the rumors bc even in gusu they can't shut their traps and sees baby, deflates but still has grumpy face like wtf happened (probably Jin Ling's fault that he finds out)

-wwx would probably joke a bit then tell him the truth immediately instead of trying to make him believe it too to avoid confrontation but asks for him to keep it secret for the joke, and Jc is like "..." cuz its an opportunity for the two to joke around together again even if he's grumpy™️ about it and so he doesn't dote on wwx but he does play along with the joke in his own way for a bit until maybe jc says something crazy and/or outrageous that couldn't be true to jin ling and he goes to wwx in a panic and so the jig is up but he tells all the juniors with 100% honesty that they did just adopt a baby and that part wasn't a joke but he didn't give birth himself and he was OK and then its just cute baby and junior interactions

bonus that came up later:

-lwj gets drunk and ends up going out again with wwx tailing close behind. they come home with another child, and thus when lwj is sober again he's suddenly a father of two young children. Cue cute timid wide-eyed bunny mode lwj while wwx comforts him (but laughing and teasing him like haha you made me pregnant again what a scandal! one look and I instantly gave birth! lwj you're so insatiable) and lsz not-so-secretly celebrates their suddenly growing family.

-JC is extremely pouty in his JC way about all these nephews he only gets to know about after they're already adopted.

-lxc is feeling quite a bit better getting to baby the babies and help his brother with raising children again, and thankfully with wwx also by lwj's side.

It was too wild a ride not to share 😌💖✨

TLDR; wwx tricks the juniors, the jades, lqr and even jc temporarily into believing he's pregnant as a way to beat the boredom while lwj is out of cloud recesses (and continues until he can't stand the doting/guilt because he succeeds in his joking too well.) wwx and lwj end up actually adopting bc wwx can't stand the disappointed faces.

Okay so for the NHS kills JRS WIP is pretty much what it says on the tin. NHS plots to kill JRS. I'm a firm believer that JGY did not kill JRS and I also believe NHS was completely morally beyond salvation after NMJ died.

He drove MXY to suicide and (if indirectly) did the same to QS, so it makes sense to me that he would be doing the "destroy you and kill your entire family" punishment. So yeah, in this, he poisons JRS's food with a slow acting poison, and JGY and QS wake up to their son dead on his bed.

Jin Guangyao takes a closer look, and feels his smiling mask breaking. If not for the stillness of his chest, the pale hue of his skin, and the lack of color on his lips, Jin Rusong could just be asleep. The sudden realization gave him whiplash, and Jin Guangyao braces himself on the bed, before his knees give out.

"A-Song, A-Song, no, no, no, gods no–"

The omega broodmare JGY one is also pretty much what it says on the tin. There is a shortage of omegas (because yk. People kill them a lot), so there's this "service" (aka trafficking) where people (alphas) that are rich enough can "rent" an omega to mate with and have children. These omegas get little to no post partum care and the resting period is however long it takes to get to a place to another or to get bought again.

I'm working off CQL canon mostly, so what happened is that, a little after being thrown out of qinghe, JGY is captured by these people. He stays as a broodmare for 10 years (and 13 pregnancies in 10 years), and the LQR (who's a beta and who's utterly clueless about how any of That works) buys him and pays the price to keep hin to marry LXC.

JGY is very weak at that point, he has horrible chronic pain (esp during heat) because of continuous pregnancy and forced heats and stuff.

Lan Xichen supports him heavily with a hand around his waist as they walk through Cloud Recesses, holding his hand. Meng Yao is grateful, that he doesn't have to expose his poor balance and weak body just yet. "Mingjue-xiong told me you were killed..." "Nie-zongzhu threw me out. He probably thought I would end up dead."

Lastly, toxic 3zun is a fic for a kink meme prompt where as NMJ's temper worsens, 3zun become toxic and mutually abusive. See: NMJ beating up JGY and less frequently LXC, JGY and LXC messing with NMJ's autonomy because "it's what's best", JGY manipulating/gaslighting them both out of fear/self preservation, etc. NMJ is being an asshole in this and it needs to be rewritten (because it's from my NMJ hate era...), but regardless, have this snippet

Xichen focused on the feeling when Guangyao stroked his jaw with his thumb, a quiet, unknowing reassurance. Xichen did not tell Guangyao the tea was drugged, but Guangyao trusted him and obliged when he told him not to drink. Xichen himself can dissolve the drug with his golden core the same way he does with alcohol.

A (probably rambling) Lan Qiren Appreciation Post

Ok, let me start by saying I'm fully aware that he isn't a "perfect" person. He is a human and comes with human flaws, however, I often find that he gets reduced to nothing but rules and anger, which in my opinion isn't fair. Many seem to forget all the things he has gone through and accomplished, seeing only a strict man obsessed with rules and filled with anger, a hindrance for his nephew and his husband. It's true that he is strict and does like the rules, just as he often appears angry too, but that's not all he is.

(Chapters the "facts" come from are ch. 64, 68, 79, 111 and 117.)

Anyway, let's start from the beginning. We all know Lan Qiren is the younger brother of Qingheng-jun (QHJ), the previous Lan sect leader. It's fair to assume that QHJ was trained and moulded to become a sect leader from childhood, becoming a renowned cultivator with an impressive reputation from an early age, so I bet everyone assumed he'd be a great sect leader, one who would fulfil his duty well. Then, at twenty, he suddenly announces his marriage and goes into seclusion, pretty much throwing all the responsibilities of a sect leader on his younger brother, Lan Qiren, overnight. At this time, LQR is at the oldest nineteen (though I hc him as 18), but since we don't know the actual age gap between QHJ and LQR, we can't know for sure how old he is. However, he is a teen that suddenly finds himself being a sect leader in everything but name. Not only that, he pretty much lost his brother too, since QHJ went into seclusion and unless he visited him there (if it was even allowed), he wouldn't see him.

Like this isn't enough, he becomes an uncle twice within a few years (here too, we don't know the exact age gap between LXC and LWJ, as well as how long after the marriage LXC was born). Although the babies are raised by others at first, they are handed over to LQR "once old enough to be taught and raised", so LQR was their de facto parental figure. And suddenly LQR has a sect to run and two sect heirs to raise and he himself is most likely still under 25. He also wasn't trained for this the same way QHJ was, but the Gusu Lan Sect still flourishes. Yes, it was most likely already doing well before him, but he continued that and also ended up becoming a renowned teacher. On top of that he raised two boys into becoming two of the cultivation world's most renowned members, and let's be honest, both LXC and LWJ are good people. If LQR was such a horrible parental figure, then I doubt both of them would've turned out as well as they do. I'm not saying he's doing everything perfectly (no parents or parental figures ever do), but he did well.

Yes, he was strict with them and the reason was how their mother's crime had caused QHJ to throw away his life (as well as abandoning his duty) and LQR feared his nephews might do the same thing unless he was strict with them. In other words, he didn't want them to do something impulsive that would then ruin their chance of happiness (and maybe because it might also lead them to lose the ability to be with their family, like for QHJ). It might not be the best way to show care, but for a Lan who saw his accomplished brother throw away everything for a woman that didn't return his love, it makes sense. He also wouldn't be the only uncle who shows affection through irritation and scolding, would he? (Yes, Jiang Wanyin, I'm looking at you.)

Another thing that's good to keep in mind is that we often get to see LQR from WWX's point of view, unless someone is speaking about LQR, and WWX is chaos, so obviously anything strict will appear stricter. I don't say that's necessarily the truth, but it might be good to keep in mind.

Let's continue to a less than happy part, LWJ hiding WWX. Firstly, it was LXC who fetched LQR and the elders out of worry, but LQR too was worried, albeit showing it as frustration. I don't think corporal punishment is okay, however in this world, it is and LWJ did severely injure 33 elders of his clan, in the view of that, the punishment does make sense. It also makes sense that LQR is the one sentencing the punishment, since it's only him or LXC who can do it and I believe that LQR doesn't want LXC to have to punish his own brother. I do not see this as LQR not caring about his nephew, as I know many do. I fully believe that whipping LWJ did emotionally hurt LQR, but rules are rules.

Time for WWX's return. As we all know, LQR falls into a coma after trying to play Evocation for NMJ's arm and LXC later states to WWX after they return from the Cultivation Conference that LQR has just woken up. I read somewhere that it was about a month between Evocation and the Cultivation Conference, meaning that LQR has been in a coma for 3-4 weeks. No matter your golden core, that got to take a toll on you, which seems to be true as he is the one leading the Lans during the second siege of the Burial Mounds and he "stood before the crowd, looking considerably more aged. There were even streaks of white in his hair." Yes, this might be due to the stress of finding out that one of his nephews is with the returned WWX and the other nephew is gone (in the claws of JGY), plus the fact that Lan Juniors have been kidnapped. However, if this were the case, he would've aged a lot during the Sunshot Campaign and the First Siege of the Burial Mounds. I firmly believe it's the resentful energy that put him into a coma that took its toll on him. Anyway, no matter why, here he is, maybe a week or so after waking up after a nearly month long coma, leading a group of Lan cultivators. And no, it's not just to fetch LWJ, because he shows care for those under his command:

"Lan Qiren hadn’t wanted to go in, at first. He would rather have remained outside and fought until the bitter end. However, he was not waging this battle alone—there were many Lan and Jin Clan cultivators under his command, and they were not the main force in the fight. He did not want to treat the lives of those disciples with such disregard. If there was a thread of hope for survival, he was compelled to seize it."

As stated later, LQR is not a reckless man. He will do what the rules say is right and what will benefit the most people, even if he disagrees on a personal level (in this case wanting to fight, but knowing others might die if he does, since they would remain as well). He is also not so proud and petty that he won't let WWX speak his mind, instead he remains silent and listens. Many others would not.

He then again, despite probably not being in full strength since the coma and definitely not from all the fighting he's already done and without spiritual power, charges in with killing force to protect people when Su She breaks the barrier into the cave and the fierce corpses attack a again. Though this clearly comes with a prise as he afterwards coughs up a lot of blood and needs to mediate to regulate his breathing (and since LWJ is willing to give him spiritual energy, I have a feeling it's a tad worse than he wants to tell, but since his core is still sealed off, LWJ giving him qi would not help anyway, as LQR states himself).

Now to the aftermath of Guanyin Temple. He asks LXC what's the matter with him and LXC says he doesn't want to talk about it. LQR could press him, he probably could force him to tell him, but he doesn't. Yes he is angry, but the novel also declares that "both were now sources of worry" and it is after also saying that "neither of these two previously flawless pupils would heed him anymore", but I don't think it's just about smudged reputation or control that has him worried. I do believe he is genuinely worried that LXC and LWJ have thrown away their lives. The way he speaks and the way he's irritated with the situation shows signs of someone who acts with anger when stressed (similar to JC). I'm not saying this is the best way to react, but it is a part of our fight or flight reaction. We also can't forget that he did see his brother throw away his life due to an impulse decision and breaking the rules, a life that seems to have been generally happy before that.

And to end it all, after the family banquet:

"Wei Wuxian stroked his chin. If that was the case, they couldn’t blame Lan Qiren for punishing them like this. The man loathed wickedness in all forms. In fact, to be copying texts while doing handstands…they were getting off pretty light."

This is the juniors getting punished for going night-hunting with Wen Ning and if WWX thinks they're getting off pretty lightly, then they most likely are. To me this shows that although LQR adds rules and follows them, he does know there is a degree to them. He knows Wen Ning wouldn't hurt the juniors and that he isn't really evil or bad, but the rules state they shouldn't spend time with him, so he has to punish them, so he does so in a way that clearly is a punishment, but also not as harsh as it technically should be.

This became a long post. All in all, Lan Qiren is more than anger and strictness. He does not lack compassion, he does care about his nephews and I think people forget everything he has gone through and accomplished and that he deserves some more love and recognition (and not to only being the butt of the joke).

2. a headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like!

ooo this is a difficult one. I think I mostly gravitate towards headcanons that I actively really enjoy on the first look, but one that I like more over time has to be that LQR had a wild youth. What did this entail exactly? I'm still thinking about it! I just think that one's neat and it's gotten neater over time, aging like fine wine.

3. a character that fandom has helped you appreciate

I honestly think that I appreciate Jin Zixuan a lot more after interacting with fandom, partially out of a "what do you MEAN you think he's responsible for being zombie fisted???" and also out of other people's lovely meta about why his growth arc is what killed him and also caused him to be so tragic. I have grown to really love him out of love and also out of spite for his detractors. >.< maybe I'll always be a lil salty alas...

14. the ship that always makes you smile

JINGRONG JINGRONG JINGRONG. They're always so "I just think you're neat (and also the best person on earth)" about each other in every adaptation and every situation and I'm just! I love them so much. <3 I think I will always love them. What a good ship. Guo Jing has outsourced his braincells to Huang Rong and Huang Rong has outsourced her morality to Guo Jing and this makes them (1) whole duo to go adventuring together.

25. a piece of advice for taking care of yourself in fandom spaces

😌 the block button is so beautiful and my good friend. Truly many things are good, but I think that blocking and unfriending/unfollowing are one of the many ways we can be kind to ourselves and others in fandom. Bathing in negativity or takes that make you angry all day don't serve any purpose but to suck joy out of a thing, and while I think a little salt is good every now and again, curating your fandom experience is so essential for continuing to find joy in it. (Also truly I don't think anyone who's venting about how they hate my favorite character wants me to come to their post to lay out reasons why I love [x] character and they're so good and correct either lolsob, so we save ourselves and the people who have takes we don't like with the big beautiful block button. 😌)

LQR & LJY [Another double length post 😊]

[Beginning]

“You do still have lessons, because you must continue to learn to cultivate. However, most of your lessons will be with me from now on, and I will only be teaching you. It will not be the sorts of classes you are accustomed to. I will give you problems to solve, questions to answer, things to memorize like you do now in your group lessons, but we will do these things while I work and you assist me. You will not be asked to sit still and be quiet all day long, you will be allowed to move as much as you’d like, and to ask me any questions that come to your mind because you need not worry about interrupting others.”

Jingyi blinks at that. There’s no way anyone is allowed to learn like that. That’s impossible. Plus there’s no way Lan-xiansheng understands just how many questions Jingyi has every day, so many of which go unanswered and how many more go unasked in the first place. He wouldn’t be offering this if he knew the truth, which means that Jingyi must have deceived him in some way. He feels panic clutch at his chest at the thought but he does his best to hide it; it’s everything he’s ever wanted since he was old enough to realize his parents weren’t coming back for him, but he’s dismayed to realize that getting it all at once actually sort of…scares him.

“Yes Lan-xiansheng,” he agrees anyway because that seems like the safest thing to do, and it’s not like he doesn’t want all of this. He just doesn’t understand why he’s suddenly being given it, or how permanent (or not) all of it is. It doesn’t seem like something he should be allowed to have, and as soon as someone realizes as much they’ll take it all away again. That’s what happens to things that are too good to be true - they don’t last. He doesn’t get to keep them.

He’s warring with himself between doing everything he can to ruin this now before he gets used to it versus wanting to cling onto it for as long as possible so he can enjoy it before it all crumbles out from under his feet. Unfortunately his instinct for self-preservation has always needed some work so after a long pause he blurts out, “Lan-xiansheng, why aren’t you punishing me? Is it..I mean do I have to wait until later for Hanguang-Jun to tell someone else everything I did so they can do it instead of you? Can we do it now instead since you already know what I did?”

“You want to be punished?” Lan-xiansheng asks and if Jingyi didn’t know any better he’d think he sounds surprised. “For what?”

Jingyi shifts a little bit, absolutely sure that this is a trap but equally sure that he’s going to blunder right into it like he always does. The aunties do this to him all the time, trick him into admitting to things that even other children do but don’t get caught and punished for, and he hates it but he’s never figured out how not to do it. He just talks and ends up admitting to everything without even trying, and it scares him sometimes, like just opening his mouth is enough to get him into trouble.

“I was disrespectful to you,” he starts with a sinking heart. “I ran away from the aunties. I broke curfew. I broke into a house. I stole food. I made Hanguang-Jun break curfew to take me home. I know that Hanguang-Jun said last night that I’m not in trouble but that’s not right! It’s..Hanguang-Jun doesn’t lie! He doesn’t ever break rules which means he doesn’t lie, but how can what he said be true? How can I have broken so many rules and not be in trouble when I’m always in trouble?”

“Hanguang-Jun breaks rules.”

Jingyi’s racing mind screeches to a halt and he stops twisting his hands together in his lap to blink at Lan-xiansheng, uncomprehending.

“What?”

“Hanguang-Jun breaks rules. As does Zewu-Jun, and as do I. No one in this Sect is perfect. It is impossible to follow every single rule perfectly at all times, and it is not expected that anyone will do so.”

Jingyi blinks a few times as he tries to make that…make sense. That can’t possibly be right. Why have all those rules then if they’re not all supposed to be obeyed all the time? Why punish people for breaking them if it’s expected? Does that mean Hanguang-Jun has been punished? Lan-xiansheng?!

“Jingyi, look at me.”

Jingyi looks up sharply from blinking down unseeingly at the floorboards to meet Lan-xiansheng’s intense stare.

“The reason you are not in trouble for your actions yesterday is because you were in distress, and even though I am sure that you were aware of every rule you broke as you broke them, you still behaved that way because you were afraid and upset. I do not believe you did any of those things because you were gladly defying the rules, but rather because you saw no other option that you could bear.”

Jingyi blinks furiously again at that and wonders for a frantic moment if he isn’t actually still asleep and dreaming this entire conversation.

“If I had to guess I would also think that your behavior for the past months has been for similar reasons. You have told myself and Hanguang-Jun that you disrupt class because you do not understand the material and find sitting still to be unbearable no matter how much you try. In that case, being punished later for causing a disruption is a consequence that is not as upsetting in the moment as the pain of sitting still and quiet is, and so it is the only acceptable alternative.

“You are not the first naturally loud person to step foot in Cloud Recesses, nor will you be the last. It is such a consistent issue despite how much you dislike and fear punishment that I can only conclude that it is something you have little control over at the moment, and that no one is helping you attempt to find that control. If that is the case, it means that it is not your fault but the fault of those who should be teaching you and have not been.

“I will not punish you any further for these behaviors unless I see that you take delight in breaking these rules, rather than feeling compelled to do so because the way your mind works is incompatible with the standard way we teach the other disciples.”

It really does all sound far too good to be true.

Because that’s it. That’s it exactly. The only thing missing is how good it feels to get attention - any attention - instead of being ignored and discarded, but Jingyi doesn’t feel a need to share that reason; it’s too embarrassing. It’s enough that Lan-xiansheng seems to understand, somehow, what it’s like in his head. He doesn’t want to break the rules, he doesn’t want to be bad, but he can’t seem to help himself when the alternative means doing things that make him feel like he’s going to crawl out of his skin if he doesn’t fix the problem immediately. Only fixing the problem means moving, wiggling, asking the questions burning in his mouth. All things that no one wants him to do.

“I can see on your face that I am correct.”

“Yes, Lan-xiansheng,” he manages and scrubs his sleeve hard over his stupid wet eyes. “Thank you.”

“You do not need to thank me, Jingyi, this is my responsibility. Now - I wish to re-teach you everything that you have struggled with so far, and that is why I have asked you to tell me what you struggle with. It is not so that I can hurt you, or so that I can ask why you do not understand basic concepts at your age. I know why you don’t as I have just established, I only need to know what I must teach you. Can you tell me?”

And Jingyi - finally willing to begin to trust that if Lan-xiansheng were trying to trap him he would just say so - tells him. Everything.

CQL question! Why does LQR act as a sect leader in ep 24 (maybe there’re more examples)? He gives his nephews assignments and declines LWJ’s requests (besides, his assignment is clearly a sort of punishment or warning). LXC seems to feel bad for his brother (he even meets WWX later bc LWJ couldn’t). Yet he doesn’t object despite being the actual sect leader. I also don’t quite get why LCX isn’t the one calling the shots. It’s HIS job in the first place.

A great question! My best guess is that it's a little bit of adaptational confusion left over from the fact that in the book, at least during the Cloud Recesses arc, Lan Xichen isn't sect leader yet and is still only a junior himself. In that context, it makes sense for Lan Qiren to be in charge, both because he's older, and because, given the delicacy of the situation with Daddy Lan, I can see why they would want to avoid the gossip that would ensue if their teenage heir stepped up and started actively performing the duties of sect leader while his father was still alive and supposedly just in a totally normal cultivation seclusion that he'll definitely be emerging from in a normal way, probably. However, the fact that this continues post-Sunshot doesn't really make sense in either context, so I think the real answer is that it causes more drama. Also, having established the dynamic during the CR arc, it kind of makes sense to just stick to it through the flashback so that we can then see the contrasting balance of power in the present-day timeline.

If we're seeking Watsonian explanations still, I also get the sense-- and I hope someone who knows more about these things will interject or correct me-- that the Lan Sect is one that is run with particular deference to its elders. If Lan Xichen (despite Liu Haikuan's extremely mature looks and bearing) is still quite young, like maybe in his early 20s, it makes a certain kind of sense that he would still feel some duty to delegate responsibility to and ask advice of the older and more experienced members of the sect. Lan Qiren is also specifically his own teacher, so there's a kind of logic there, too.

Actually, putting it that way, I wonder if it's less a case of Lan Qiren overruling Lan Xichen as sect leader and more Lan Qiren stepping in to act as Lan Wangji's master/teacher, a position that (as I understand it) would have more direct control over and responsibility for him anyway.

(But mostly I think the answer is: drama. And because Lan Qiren is a better symbol of everything Lan Wangji is beginning to doubt than his brother is.)

THE WEN CLAN

The Wen clan has to be divided in two branches. The Qishan Wen, owners of the Qishan Gym, and the Dafan Wen, who own every Pokèmon Centre and healers of Pokèmon all over the place.

The main members of the Qishan Wen clan are Wen Ruohan, Wen Xu and Wen Chao with Wang Lingjiao.

They are Fire/Other type Pokèmon users and their teams are as follows.

With such teams the Lotus Pier Gym did not really have a chance, however the Yunmeng siblings WILL take bloody revenge. With them out of the way, the only Wens out and about will be the Dafan Wens, healers, professors and breeders, the ones who will help the Yunmeng siblings in their hardest times.

Enter Wen Qing, her brother Wen Ning, Grandma Wen, Uncle Fourth and everyone in the Dafan Wen Clan.

As mentioned, they are mainly doctors. Wen Qing possesses the ownership of the biggest and best Pokèmon Centre in the whole continent, with branches all around.

She has a squadron of Chansey helping her out, as well as a whole team of healer Pokèmon, which is composed of:

Blissey (her own and also Head of the nurse Chansey squadron)

Flareon (as sign that she is a Wen, but this Flareon is the most well-behaved Pokèmon ever - also this one provides emotional support to other Pokèmon)

Bellossom

Aromatisse

Hatterene

Ivysaur (a Grass/Poison pokèmon, wonder why she caught that one for *winkwink*nudgenudge*)

Wen Ning, her brother, is her assistant and nevertheless will end up with a Ghost type Pokèmon, influence of WWX. He then has a team of:

Chansey (it's WQ's Blissey's brother).

Litwick (the Ghost/Fire type, he is a Wen, but also he has had WWX's influence rubbing off him. It is a very polite Litwick)

Vileplume (both him and WQ got an Oddish each, but then they evolved it in different ways. Whilst WQ got Bellossom, WN got Vileplume

Ditto

Scorbunny (caught on Lan ground, with LWJ's blessings.)

Stufful (the actual owner abandoned it and WN did not have the heart to leave it behind)

Grandma Wen is a Professor, the others being LQR and Grandma Yu. She has a very well behaved Arcanine as companion. Uncle Fourth helps her out along with the rest of the Dafan Wens.

But then HOW did LSZ/Wen Yuan become a Lan? I admit I had not figured it out, but I will go for a great ttragedy during the time when JGS wanted to try and be the new WRH, so a-Yuan got adopted in the Lan Clan whilst the Dafan Wen was fleeing the persecution enacted after WRH's death. This until JZX takes over and the Dafan Wen can go back to being healers. However by this time a-Yuan is fully integrated in the Lan clan.

A-Yuan will learn the truth and he will be allowed one (1) fire type Pokèmon.

The surviving Pokèmon that were WRH's, WC's and WX's will "retire" to a more tranquil life in the territories of Professor Grandma Wen and will not fight anymore.

The End (dream)

Okay, so I just woke up from the wildest mdzs dream and as well know, dreams don't exactly make sense, but there was some semblance of an actual story here so Imma try to convey it as best as I can

I don't know where it begins other than lwj (hgj) met a kid while wwx was dead

The kid was xy and hgj was kind to him, one of the only people to have ever been kind. That made xy like him, but it also unfortunately was the catalyst for what's to come.

Some time after wwx has returned, people still are incredibly unhappy about it, lqr especially

Despite wwx being proven to genuinely be kind and good and righteous, he wants him gone but knows that lwj will never allow wwx to leave his side. He tries to get them to separate but it never works. (I think xy definitely had some dark influence over these thoughts and hatred)

Sometime, wangxian meet xy again but the story is different and I don't remember where/why. I do know that xy, before his death, gives lwj a prophecy: the end begins when darkness falls/the end begins when the night dies

They cannot make sense of these words

Some time later, wangxian are walking together through a forest path when lqr shows up, and it begins.

He stops them briefly only to he'd encountered some dark cultivators (or fierce corpses, idk anymore) off ahead that he was unable to stop alone

Of course, wangxian being who they are, run to there immediately to help however they can. Unfortunately for them, their distraction and one-track mind to help out is paramount to lqr's plan.

As they are running, the don't notice lqr swiftly come behind them

They both are suddenly stabbed with needles in the back of the neck, effectively paralyzing them.

While lwj gets launched into a tree from momentum, just able to turn around to look for wwx, wwx falls to the ground harshly and ends up on his back

Then lqr jumps up into the tree over wwx, looks to lwj, and says "I'm sorry," before he jumps down with a knife (don't ask me why it's a knife and not a sword)

Screaming, lwj is stuck only to watch lqr, his own uncle, his blood, come down on wwx with a knife

The moment the knife hits, a blast of dark, purple-ish "light" shoots out of wwx's chest in wide, jagged spikes. He can no long see his uncle through it, all he sees is wwx twitch and scream more intensely and painfully than he's ever heard anyone scream in his life

He watches, paralyzed and wide-eyed, as hundreds of arms reach out of wwx's chest in the center of the darkness. Those arms shift and become full corpses that quickly begin to pile out of wwx and walk away towards populated areas.

In the mass of bodies, a child emerges

The child isn't fully physical, more of a specter—purple and see through, but glowing with darkness. The child, lwj recalls, is xy when he first met him. (Full disclosure, kid didn't really look like xy here and I think lwj called him Billy, but it's xy lol)

Bodies continue to tumble from wwx who is still screaming his throat bloody, while lwj is frozen and watching this child walk up to him.

The child steps right up to lwj's side and looks in his eyes

In a hauntingly normal and nonchalant voice, the child simply repeats the prophecy to lwj, then tilts his head to rest against lwj's side to say something along the lines of "thank you, hgj, for your light and kindness" then begins to walk away

Unfortunately, I woke up rather suddenly at this point and needed to share this dream immediately before I forgot with my wwx brain, so there is no ending. Unless I write this as an actual fic someday, there won't be an official ending.

JC Love Month 2020 Day 23

Detachment

Day 23 of JC Love Month brings more of my Lan Qiren as the only good parental figure in Jiang Cheng's life, but this time Wen Qing also steps up for Jiang Cheng. This might not be how you imagined this, but it’s what I did. ILY<3 This follows after Day 17 of JC Love Month.

When Jiang Cheng wakes up on Friday, he wonders if he can get away with simply not getting up. It’s not like his parents are going to notice—at least until Jiang Cheng doesn’t show up to the doctor’s appointment his mother made for him—but he fears that Lan Qiren might notice.

Jiang Cheng isn’t sure what exactly Lan Qiren will do if he doesn’t show up at school today, but Jiang Cheng finds that he’s unwilling to worry him more than he really has to and especially more than he already does.

So he gets up, his wrist painfully throbbing probably more due to his emotional state than any real pain, because his wrist hasn’t hurt like this in a while now, but Jiang Cheng shakes it off.

He already bought a splint to put onto his wrist as soon as the cast is off and his mother left again, because he knows it’s too early to get the cast off. He knows and the doctor will know and yet they both will do what his mother orders.

Jiang Cheng thinks he can count himself lucky that his parents aren’t home that much, so he will have lots of time to wear the splint without igniting his mother’s anger over it.

When Jiang Cheng is done brushing his teeth he takes a moment to just stare at himself in the mirror. He looks tired, but he always does, and he thinks it’s mighty unfair that otherwise he looks fine, when he doesn’t feel fine at all.

“You can do this,” Jiang Cheng tells himself and then he abruptly turns away from his reflection.

He is not sure he can.

Wei Wuxian hasn’t been home at all this week, and Jiang Cheng can’t even blame him for it, seeing as how his mother was home more often than not, mostly to remind him that he has the appointment today.

Jiang Cheng doesn’t even want to imagine what’s going to happen if he misses it.

He feels detached from himself as he goes through his day, but the clock keeps ticking down and the time of his appointment gets closer and closer.

He only has two more hours when he sits down for lunch at school, but he can only stare at it. Jiang Cheng doesn’t feel like eating at all, and he doesn’t feel like moving, and he checks for the fifteenth time if he packed his splint.

“Jiang Wanyin,” someone suddenly says from beside him and Jiang Cheng startles badly enough to nearly knock over his bottle but he manages to catch it at the last moment.

He used is injured hand for that, though, and the throbbing pain in his wrist tells him that such a sudden movement wasn’t appreciated at all.

Jiang Cheng will have to be so very careful once the cast comes off.

“Wanyin,” the person says again, much softer this time, and this time Jiang Cheng manages to turn his head towards the voice.

“Oh, Lan Xichen,” he breathes out and then wonders why he would be here.

He’s at college already, not at school anymore so there should be no reason for him to be here.

“What are you doing here?” Jiang Cheng asks, immediately wincing when he realizes how rude he is being, but Lan Xichen only smiles at him and puts a hand to his shoulder.

“My uncle wants to see you, come on,” he gently says without actually answering the question and Jiang Cheng nods immediately.

He hasn’t seen Lan Qiren much this week, didn’t dare to go over after the family dinner—too confused by what had happened that evening—and he misses it. Misses Lan Qiren, if he’s being honest.

Jiang Cheng wonders if his parents will be out on the weekend again so that Jiang Cheng might have a chance to go visit Lan Qiren.

“Are you alright?” Lan Xichen asks about halfway to Lan Qiren’s office and Jiang Cheng startles, too lost in his thoughts.

“Sure, yeah, I’m fine,” he rushes out, but he hunches in on himself when Lan Xichen only gives him a look that tells Jiang Cheng exactly how believable he sounds.

“Why does Headmaster Lan want to see me?” Jiang Cheng asks, hoping to divert Lan Xichen’s attention from him, but when Lan Xichen only gives him a look, Jiang Cheng drops his head.

“You know he doesn’t want to be called that by you,” Lan Xichen tells him, is almost gentle in his correction and Jiang Cheng nods.

“I know,” he whispers but he can’t bring himself to simply say Lan Qiren’s name, because Jiang Cheng already feels unstable and he fears he’s just going to burst into tears.

“Okay,” Lan Xichen says, clearly understanding more than Jiang Cheng actually wants him to but before he can say something else, they have reached Lan Qiren’s office.

And he doesn’t look too happy.

“I’m sorry,” Jiang Cheng says on reflex, even though he’s not entirely sure what he did to receive such a look and Lan Qiren immediately gentles his face.

“Jiang Cheng, my nephew told me you have an appointment with a doctor today, is that right?” Lan Qiren asks and Jiang Cheng throws Lan Xichen a betrayed look.

“Yes,” he still says and it only seems to sour Lan Qiren’s mood.

“To take off the cast?”

“That’s what my mother wants,” Jiang Cheng says as nonchalantly as he can.

“And the doctor will comply with that?” Lan Qiren wants to know and Jiang Cheng huffs out a bitter laugh.

“He has been the family doctor since before a-jie was born. Of course he knows better than to tell her no,” he tells them and he can see how both Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen stiffen.

“Then you’re not going,” Lan Qiren decides and Jiang Cheng gapes at him.

“Of course I’m going!” he says, even though just a few minutes ago he wanted nothing more than to skip that dreadful appointment.

“You’re not!” Lan Qiren says, much more vehemently than Jiang Cheng is used to from him and Jiang Cheng presses his lips together.

“My mother will not allow this,” he says, tries to make Lan Qiren understand what a tremendously bad idea this is, but Lan Qiren only shrugs.

“If she wants you to attend that appointment so badly, she can come pick you up here herself and then she can bring you to the doctor my nephew knows,” Lan Qiren says and Jiang Cheng can only stare at him.

“I already called Wen Qing. She pencilled you in for an appointment today and I can promise you that she will not just go along with what your mother wants but do what’s actually best for you,” Lan Xichen chimes in and Jiang Cheng turns around to him.

“You clearly don’t know my mother,” he tells him, because he doubts there is anyone out there who wouldn’t fall all over themselves to please Madam Yu.

“You clearly don’t know Wen Qing yet,” Lan Xichen only gives back and Jiang Cheng can tell that he already lost that fight.

Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen don’t want him to go to the appointment with his mother’s doctor and so it seems like he’s not going.

Jiang Cheng finds it quite hard to swallow around the lump in his throat.

It’s five minutes before the appointment with the doctor when Jiang Cheng’s phone chimes.

He holds it up, because he doubts Lan Qiren wants him to answer it, and just like he expected Lan Qiren takes the phone out of his hands.

He accepts the call and puts it on speaker.

“Jiang Wanyin, where the hell are you? You better not be late!” his mother’s voice rings out and Jiang Cheng flinches.

“Your son is not coming,” Lan Qiren easily tells Madam Yu and there’s a surprised silence on the other end of the line.

“Lan Qiren?” Madam Yu then asks and Jiang Cheng frowns at how easily Madam Yu recognized him.

“Yu Ziyuan,” Lan Qiren gives back, and Jiang Cheng thinks he might be missing something here.

“What do you mean he’s not coming? Of course Jiang Cheng will come, he has an appointment.”

“An appointment he will not be present for. We’re taking him to another doctor. You’re welcome to meet us there, he’ll send you the address,” Lan Qiren says, and then he simply hangs up on her.

Jiang Cheng can only stare at him.

“This is the address,” Lan Xichen says and hands Jiang Cheng a slip of paper.

Jiang Cheng takes it with numb fingers and then dutifully types the address out to send it to his mother.

“She’s going to be furious,” he whispers as he sends the message and he finds that his fingers are slightly shaking.

“Let her be,” Lan Qiren decides. “There is nothing she can do to you,” he goes on and while Jiang Cheng wishes that were true, he knows it’s not.

She’s his mother; there are a whole lot of things she can do to him and Lan Qiren has to know that.

“Don’t worry,” Lan Xichen says from his side. “It will be fine.”

Jiang Cheng fails to see how that might be true, but in the end he only nods.

He is already late for the appointment, and his mother already knows he’s going to a different doctor.

This might as well happen now.

“I really hope you’re my patient and not just another nuisance in my hair,” is what Jiang Cheng is being greeted with when they arrive at the doctor and if this is Wen Qing then she’s certainly much more fearsome than Jiang Cheng expected her to be.

Instead of answering her, he only raises his arm with the cast, and her eyes immediately go softer.

“How long has it been?” she asks and this time it’s Lan Qiren who answers for him.

“Four weeks.”

“Then what the hell are you doing here, that’s much too soon to take it off,” Wen Qing immediately says, her scowl firmly back in place as she crosses her arms over her chest.

“Well, you see—” Lan Xichen starts, but then there’s already a commotion outside that tells Jiang Cheng that his mother has arrived.

“That,” Lan Xichen finishes with a nod towards the door that flies open a second later.

“What is the meaning of this,” Madam Yu demands to know and Jiang Cheng is very ashamed to admit that he steps closer to Lan Qiren in face of her anger.

“Who are you?” Wen Qing asks, very calmly, though Jiang Cheng gets the distinct impression that she is anything but.

“I’m his mother,” Madam Yu says and points at Jiang Cheng. “And you will get over here right now,” she then orders and while Jiang Cheng drags his feet to do so, he doesn’t really have a choice.

“His mother,” Wen Qing says with a searching look at Lan Xichen who only nods. “Fine, whatever. Why are you here today?”

“We wouldn’t be if Lan Qiren didn’t meddle in things that are not his business,” Madam Yu hisses and then slightly pushes Jiang Cheng forward. “His cast needs to come off,” Madam Yu tells Wen Qing who goes very, very still at that.

“I heard it’s only been four weeks,” Wen Qing gives back and Madam Yu scoffs.

“So more than enough time to heal. Get it done.”

Wen Qing looks at her with a raised eyebrow and Jiang Cheng has never seen anyone as unaffected as her by Madam Yu’s anger.

“I’ll have to x-ray it to decide that,” Wen Qing finally says and Madam Yu sighs.

“Do what you must, as long as that thing comes off,” she says and gives Jiang Cheng one last push.

Wen Qing shares a look with Lan Qiren but before Jiang Cheng can decipher it, Wen Qing whisks him away into a separate room.

One without the equipment to do an x-ray.

“What about the x-ray?” Jiang Cheng dares to ask and Wen Qing silences him with a look.

“I don’t need an x-ray to know that it’s two weeks too early to remove the cast,” she tells him. “It stays on.”

“Oh,” Jiang Cheng says and looks down at his feet because he already dreads what’s going to happen when they get back outside.

“Is she abusing you physically?” Wen Qing suddenly asks him bluntly and Jiang Cheng freezes in his shock.

“No?” he gives back and he is very aware of how that sounds.

Wen Qing only looks at him until he finally shakes his head and gives a more definite no.

“Great, so it’s only the emotional abuse and the neglect,” Wen Qing says and Jiang Cheng wishes he could disappear, he’s so ashamed that a complete stranger can see it this quickly.

“I’m a doctor,” Wen Qing softly says when she notices how quite Jiang Cheng is. “I specialize in children, actually. You get an eye for it, and there are other parents who are much better at hiding it,” Wen Qing explains and it does nothing to make Jiang Cheng feel better.

“Do you want me to call the authorities?” she asks then and at that Jiang Cheng immediately shakes his head.

“No,” he chokes out, because that really is the last thing he wants.

Not because of his mother, but he fears that when they take him away from her, he won’t be able to see Lan Qiren anymore either.

“Fine,” Wen Qing says with a sigh. “Here’s my number, if you ever need help with anything. The authorities act a lot quicker if it’s a doctor who alerts them, but I’m sure Lan Qiren and Lan Xichen already have a good eye on you.”

“They do too much,” Jiang Cheng mutters and Wen Qing scoffs.

“They are doing exactly the right amount, it seems,” she says though then she hums, clearly considering something. “Maybe even too little,” she then decides and points at Jiang Cheng.

“You’re going to stay right here,” she tells him and promptly marches out of the room again, leaving the door open so that Jiang Cheng can hear every word that is being said.

“And?” Madam Yu asks Wen Qing at the same time Lan Qiren asks the same and Lan Xichen silently steps into the room, standing close to Jiang Cheng.

“The cast will not come off,” Wen Qing tells them and while Lan Qiren lets out a very satisfied “Good” Madam Yu is suspiciously quiet.

Jiang Cheng knows that it only ever gets this quiet before she erupts.

“How dare you,” she hisses as if on cue. “I am his mother and I order you to take it off right this instant,” she says but it doesn’t seem like Wen Qing is impressed with her at all.

“Are you a doctor? Do you have a degree in that field? No? Then shut the hell up,” she snaps at Madam Yu. “The cast stays on and if you order me to take it off one more time I will call child protection because of medical neglect,” Wen Qing says and it clearly stuns Madam Yu into silence.

“I told you,” Lan Xichen lowly says and gently brings their shoulders together. “Wen Qing would never allow for the cast to be taken off this early or bend to you mother’s wishes.”

“What’s your recommendation?” Lan Qiren asks.

“Two more weeks with the cast and then physical therapy,” Wen Qing says immediately and Madam Yu only scoffs.

“You got a problem with that?” Wen Qing wants to know and Jiang Cheng can just imagine the look Madam Yu sends her.

“If you would take the cast off now he wouldn’t need physical therapy.”

“If you don’t get out of my eyes, you’re going to need physical therapy,” Wen Qing shoots back and Jiang Cheng is pretty sure no doctor is allowed to speak to patients or their guardians like that.

He can’t find it in him to mind it too much, especially when Lan Xichen snickers next to him.

“This will not be the last of it,” Madam Yu threatens but Wen Qing continues to be unimpressed by her.

“If I hear that the cast came off before the six weeks are over, I’m going to call the authorities on you. If I hear about any further mistreatment of him, I’m going to call the authorities on you. If I hear that you’re forbidding him from seeing the Lan’s again, I’m going to call the authorities on you,” Wen Qing lists off, and Jiang Cheng’s eyes start to burn again.

“Fine,” Madam Yu scoffs. “If the Lan’s want to keep him so badly, they should. It’s not like he is ever useful.”

At that Jiang Cheng tries to make himself as small as he can, even though Madam Yu is not even in the same room as him, but Lan Xichen puts his arm around his shoulder and while it’s still not easy to hear this, it might be a little bit better with someone on his side.

“Gladly,” Lan Qiren speaks up as if he just waited for that. “We’ll be by to pick up all of his things. Do not expect to see him at your home anymore,” Lan Qiren says and Jiang Cheng can just imagine the glare on his mother’s face.

“I am still his mother! I am still his guardian, don’t you forget that!” she hisses at Lan Qiren, who seems to stay calm in face of her anger.

“Only as long as no one pokes their nose into your parenting decisions,” Lan Qiren sweetly says. “So if I were you, I would simply agree to my decisions regarding Wanyin, because otherwise there might just be a scandal waiting to happen when child protection comes knocking on your doors.”

Jiang Cheng hadn’t known Lan Qiren could be this ruthless, but it is a pleasant surprise.

“This will not be the end of it, Qiren,” Madam Yu tells him, but Lan Qiren is clearly unimpressed.

“We will see, Ziyuan,” he gives back. “Don’t forget to be at home in an hour so we can pick up his things,” he reminds her, and then simply walks away from her, right into Jiang Cheng’s room, who starts to cry the moment he sees him.

“You’re coming with us now,” Lan Qiren says and pulls Jiang Cheng into a hug. “You’re not going back there,” he decides and Jiang Cheng clings to him as he sobs into his shoulder.

“Okay,” he somehow gets out and then Lan Qiren simply lets him cry until his tears dry out.

“I do have other patients, you know,” Wen Qing suddenly says with a sigh and Lan Xichen laughs.

“We’ll be out of your hair in a moment,” Lan Xichen promises her and Jiang Cheng moves away from Lan Qiren, who doesn’t mention the wet spot on his shirt at all.

“Thank you,” Jiang Cheng says to Wen Qing, who levels him with a look.

I’m just saying, if you needed any proof about how righteous and good of a person Lan Wangji (and Wei Wuxian) is just look at his relationship with his uncle and brother in Wei Wuxian’s second life. Me? I would’ve held a grudge for the rest of my life about Wei Wuxian’s death.

Family tea time would’ve been so awkward. Lan Wangji could’ve been so fucking petty. It’s a credit to himself that he did not take that route but just imagine it for a moment:

Let's do a ghost Twin Jade Parent AU. So Madam Lan is dead or was killed, but QHG-jun desperate to at least allow his sons to see her, did some obscure or forbidden ritual that left him really sick. Whenever her ghost was strong enough she could materialize, those were when LWJ and LXC went to visit. QHJ-Junwas always at the death's door as his wife was always at life's door. So he felt into week long comas, LQR wanted to stop this. But QHJ-jun was like respect my wishes so it continues.

Madam Lan dies shortly after her second son is born. She had barely managed to get through the birth and hadn’t been able to hold the baby before she was gone. 

Qingheng-Jun held his second son and wept at the unfairness. He had promised her she could name their second child since he had named little Huan. She had so few things to make her happy in her seclusion and she had been so excited. 

Lan Qiren was sympathetic and gentle with him in a way he hadn’t been since before his ill-fated marriage. “The baby needs a name,” he said. “Did she decide on one before...?” 

She hadn’t. She told him that she would know what to name their baby once she saw them. She didn’t even get to see their son. He refuses to name their son without her.

He breaks his seclusion and goes to the hidden library, searching for a ritual he had once heard of. It takes him all night but he finds it. Her home is the best place to do the ritual since it has so much of her residual energy. He brings his second son with him and keeps him tucked away in a small cradle. He doesn’t know how long he will be able to keep his wife with them and doesn’t want to waste time running to get the baby.

The ritual is old and forbidden and dark. It makes his bones ache and his lungs burn and his skin crawl as he does it. It takes so much blood. It takes so much spiritual energy. The ritual was meant to be done by three people, but Qingheng-jun is alone and willing to give everything it needs. Just to see her. Just so she can see their son.

“Husband?” she asks once she has crawled out of the large puddle of blood on the floor of her home. She is covered in his blood and so, so beautiful that he almost weeps. “What...? What happened?”

“The cradle,” he says instead of explaining. He doesn’t know how long the ritual will last. He can’t waste time explaining. “Our son... you need to meet our son.”

At the mention of the baby, her eyes light up. She no longer cares about how or why she is here. She gets up on shaky legs and crosses the room. The little gasp and adoring coo she lets out are sweeter then any sound his guqin could make. He watches her fall in love with their son and it was all worth it.
