Who is going around saying JC would have raised A-Yuan better?!
Can they not read? Have they hit their head and are concussed? Do they need medical assistance?!
There is so much wrong with this whole scenario I don't even know where to begin!
Let's start with the fact that JC is the reason A-Yuan has no living relatives left…
That JC actually brought a horde of blood thirsty people to where the child was living, totally unperturbed by the fact an innocent toddler would most certainly die. People think A-Yuan should live with the guy that did that?
JC hates all the Wens, even those who were innocent and not only helped save him, but secured his parents' remains for him! He abuses his own nephew, slapping him around and making him feel unworthy. If he does that to his own flesh and blood, what type of life would A-Yuan have had if in some skewed, illogical alternative universe where JC actually had a heart and not only actively spared the toddler but raised him himself?!
What an awful upbringing the poor child would have had. He's already lost everyone, why are some intent on making him suffer any more?!
LWJ did an absolutely incredible job raising A-Yuan. WWX is not only instantly drawn towards the boy but he has nothing but praise for whoever raised him! As opposed to his impression of JL, where he ponders why the boy has turned out so arrogant, ill-tempered and brimming with hostility - much like his uncle and father.
Just look at the evidence!
LSZ is a well adjusted, kind, caring, smart young man who gets on with others and has great cultivation and leadership skills. Whereas JL, harbours so much unnecessary pain and resentment in his heart thanks to JC outright lying about the circumstances around his mother's death, encouraging him to embrace the hatred within him instead. JL puts himself in danger and does not care about dying as long as he's able to prove his worth and abilities to JC. Not to mention how lonely the poor kid is. It's heartbreaking to see what has become of JYLs baby - and this is with the boy only living with his uncle half of the time!!
Thankfully WWX is trying his best to rectify these issues and JL is showing promise due to the influence of WWX, LWJ and the other juniors.
I honestly don't know how LSZ could be any better than he already is in canon. Whoever stated this is utterly delusional and doesn't understand the plot or characters at all.

Fic Finder

1. Hi! I was reading a Twitter threadfic, but I lost it and I can't find it anymore (either that, or the author deleted it).
WWX is a spy (or something like that) and finds himself at LWJ's house (he's his ex husband and a surgeon) because he got himself hurt in his line of work. LXC works at the hospital with LWJ and is married to NMJ, who does the same job as WWX (the difference is that what WWX does is illegal). Also, at one point LWJ decides to adopt A-Yuan because he wasn't taken care of by his foster parents.
It was quite long, very new and it was updated frequently @blueghost13
FOUND? This Twitter fic / empty space beside me by scarletmoontears (E, 9k, WIP, WangXian, NieLanYu, Spies & Secret Agents, Secret Agent WWX, Surgeon LWJ, Mutual Pining, Exes, Reconciliation, Getting Back Together, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, Slow Burn) this is for the first one. I believe the author also has an ongoing fic for it as well. If requester needs it I'll send it. / the thread fic is still ongoing, so updates on ao3 are a little slower than on twitter!
~*~
2. Hi! Thank you for all your work :) I’m looking for a fic where in the past JYL drowned bc she got caught in a net of some sort and WWX and JC tried to save her, and JC blamed her death on WWX. In the future something similar happens and JC realises it wasn’t really WWX’s fault and they sort of reconcile I think?

Please help me find it.

8. Hello! I’m so desperate and can’t find this fix anywhere - can you please help? It’s modern as where Wangxian is married, but they have initial misunderstandings where WWX doesn’t think they’re in love. WWX doesn’t enjoy sex initially and can’t orgasm. LZ is allergic to chocolate. LZ is some kind of rich CEO. And there is a coffee truck guy who has a huge crush on WWX. Any guidance is much appreciated!! Thank you!

9. I've been looking for this JWY & WWX reconciliation fic for so long. Wei Wuxian is in an inn in a small town in Yunmeng, trying to keep a low profile to avoid the Jiangs. This may be pre-Wanxian but there's pining. There is a fish/carp Yao in the water and it eats a Jiang disciple. Wei Wuxian lets himself get eaten to rescue the disciple, but he is hurt. JWY brings him to Lotus Pier. I don't really remember what else happens, but the fish Yao is a very clear memory. Thank you for your help! 💖

10. I'm trying to find a fic, but I only remember a specific scene. It was LWJ wrapping his forehead ribbon around his and WWX's wrists in the cave after defeating the Xuanwu of Slaughter because they thought they weren't going to survive long enough to be rescued, and they hoped that if they did die, whoever found their bodies would burry them together. If anyone could help me find it, I would really appreciate it! @xxasphodelxx

FOUND! Built On Hope by Alaceron (G, 2k, WangXian, Star wars AU) Hollowed By The Depths is a Work Inspired By Built On Hope, by Alaceron—which also fits the querent’s specifications (and uses the name Darth Neider for Sith Lord! WWX.) / my honor and pleasure to have been of service. Don’t forget that you can use plain old general search engines! “Darth Neider” had to be an uncommon phrase, since Sith titles tend to be “Darth Obvious-English-Word-For-Something-Evil-Derivative” (the author was subtler, transposing “Xian” into the German word for “envy”); Built On Hope was the first English-language Google result.

14. Looking for a fic where Lan Qiren visits the Burial Mounds; specifically, he overhears LWJ talking to LXC about wanting "to hide someone away" and realizes that saving WWX equals saving LWJ from the worst of his father's legacy. 15. Hello, can you help me find a fic? I think it was inspired by By Any Other Name. WWX goes to LP after he wakes up in MXY's body, and JC and JL, i think, get robes for him by a seammistress that later pretends to be WWX's family. FOUND? Rabbit Heart by Suaine (M, 56k, WangXian, during the separation in ep50, everyone is being very sensible, some animal cruelty (not committed by main characters), WWX adopts a puppy (YES I KNOW), cultivation conference at Gusu Lan, a paperman is clearly being used non-canonically, so much yearning, this is a quest story, Family Issues, Sexual Content) chapter 3

17. Hi guys! Thank you for all the hard work! I'm looking for a fic where Lan Wangji leaves his sect with A-Yuan and is joined by some other diaciples. They go to Yunmeng to join the Jiang, and I remember one of the disciples leaves their group, while another two are Jingyi's parents, who left rather than let him be punished for being behind in class or something like that.

19. hiii! this one is for the fic finder! is a "fuck or die" sotuation in which wwx is mortally wounded. a lan doctor says the dual cultivation is the only way for him to survive. lwj immediately agrees because wwx is getting worse and worse very quickly, so they have a first time and wwx gets a little better at the end and moans. then they get together but i cant recall if iheres angts before that! i don't think it was sex polen or sex curse.
FOUND? Imbalance by blueingaround (E, 21k, WangXian, WWX/OMC, Fuck Or Die, not really sex pollen tho, Mutual Pining, Jealousy, Sunshot Campaign, Coming Out, Internalized Homophobia, Anal Sex, Anal Fingering, Dry Humping, Idiots in Love, Semi-Public Sex, Public Sex, Implied/Referenced Alcohol Abuse/Alcoholism, Bottom!LWJ, top!WWX, i think they'll switch too at some point, Gay Panic, Original Character(s), he appears for one single chapter tho, temporary disability)
~*~
20. for fic finding - i remember a fic where WWX was a plant witch who ran a flower shop, LWJ brought in a dying plant and he fixed it up for him. LWJ was also wen yuan's adopted father, and I'm pretty sure he called WWX dr flowers. LWJ lived in the building he and wwx had in their childhood, wwx's parents passed away when he was very young and he inherited their magic, and it was a while before anyone found him. baby LWJ pushed food in through the letter slot, I believe.

WIP Wednesday
@lansplaining kindly requested I work on my LQR raises Jingyi story (which I’ve also now started cross-posting to AO3 finally!) so here’s a small update of that (And for anyone who’s forgotten where we are: Jingyi has been invited to join LWJ and LSZ for a little while in the rabbit meadow this morning after telling LQR what he struggles with in class, and LWJ has just asked him if he could teach LSZ how to play the games Jingyi likes.)
-/-
[Beginning]
A favor??? For Hanguang-Jun?! Jingyi nods so quickly he makes himself a little disoriented and he hears Lan Yuan stifle a giggle next to him, but it doesn’t sound…mean, so he doesn’t mind.
“Will you teach A-Yuan how to play your favorite games?”
Jingyi can’t help but startle a little. That’s the kind of favor Hanguang-Jun wants to ask for?! He looks completely serious, as he always does, but…that would mean he’s encouraging Jingyi to not only be loud and improper, but asking him to make Lan Yuan bad just like him. Doesn’t Hanguang-Jun want his son to keep being perfect? Is this some new way to trick him into punishment? If he makes Hanguang-Jun’s own son loud and impolite like him, will they take him away from Lan-xiansheng again?
And then, even if it’s not a trick to make him act bad to get punished, he doesn’t even like Lan Yuan! Jingyi squints first at Hanguang-Jun and then at Lan Yuan, waiting for one of them to say it’s a joke and he doesn’t really have to play with the boy who gets to have everything Jingyi doesn’t -
But they’re both still just watching him, waiting for him to decide.
“What if the game I want to play is running around and climbing trees and yelling?” Jingyi finally asks, still squinting a little bit at Hanguang-Jun, just barely enough that he could blame it on the dappled sunlight overhead if he needed to.
“That is fine.”
Hanguang-Jun can’t possibly be joking with his face as serious as it is, but at the same time…if running around and climbing trees really is okay then why has Jingyi always been punished for it before?
Hanguang-Jun must know about all of that, though, because after a moment of their silent standoff he settles one of the rabbits in his lap and begins petting it slowly, gently, just like he’d shown Jingyi, and says, “Here, with me and A-Yuan, you may be a child, Jingyi. You may run and play as you wish. I will not punish you.”
Jingyi glances at Lan Yuan again, waiting to see if this is a joke, but the other boy is just looking back at him, his eyes wide and innocent and, maybe, just as confused as Jingyi feels. He still doesn’t like Lan Yuan, but he knows that’s mean to say so he doesn’t. Instead, he glances one more time at Hanguang-Jun sitting there calm like a porcelain bowl of pure water from the mountain, and as he watches Hanguang-Jun nods at them both once and closes his eyes, sinking into meditation. Before Hanguang-Jun can change his mind, Jingyi reaches out to grab Lan Yuan by the wrist and tug him all the way to the other side of the meadow, away from the rabbits hopping towards Hanguang-Jun to a clear patch big enough to run around in, and with a shivery feeling in his chest he teaches Lan Yuan how to play tag.
And how to do cartwheels.
And how to climb the skinny trees around them and perch in the branches.
And how to somersault.
And when Lan Yuan pants that he’s tired and he doesn’t want to play anymore, Jingyi lets him sit and tear up fistfuls of grass to store for the bunnies once it’s safe for them to approach while Jingyi runs in circles around him, practicing his cartwheels and his somersaults on his own as well as some of his more impressive sword fighting moves. Not the ones they teach in class, but the ones he does when he’s playing with sticks or wooden practice swords, the kind that always get him in trouble for not behaving respectfully.
He’s just coming down from the highest jump he can manage, a long stick in both hands and throat straining around a loud, “Hyah!!!” when Hanguang-Jun gets to his feet and gently picks his way over the bunnies around his feet to begin crossing the clearing to them. Jingyi drops the stick immediately and tucks both hands behind his ramrod-straight back, but Hanguang-Jun simply deposits a rabbit in Lan Yuan’s lap for him to feed grass to before he reaches out to rest a hand on top of Jingyi’s sweaty hair.
“It is time for you to return to Shufu, Jingyi. Would you like to play with A-Yuan again tomorrow?”
“Yes please,” Jingyi replies, because even if he still doesn’t like Lan Yuan very much he won’t pass up the opportunity to come play with the rabbits or his too-loud games that he can’t play anywhere else. It doesn’t even matter if Lan Yuan doesn’t want to play them with him or not – he’s plenty good at entertaining himself if he’s got the chance, so he’ll take it.

I read that one anon ask where cultivation babies lsz and ljy convince jl that uncle zixun is bad news. I imagine it would've been more effective if nsy is involved. (Aka that one time jl headbutt jin zixun as hard as he can because nsy was watching. Also known as the day jin zixun got his nose broken by a 3yr old baby.)
Jin Ling got an impressive bruise on his forehead, but he's very proud of himself. Jin Zixuan is less proud, though that's only because he saw JZXun's blood all over Jin Ling's little face and panicked.

Before Jiang Cheng ate my brain, I was working on a "five times the juniors were reminded that Wei Wuxian is still the Yiling Laozu" kind of fic, and revisiting the old draft after so long is making me laugh.
...
[LWJ, WWX, JL, and LSZ are having dinner in the Jingshi.]
Jin Ling is visibly torn between being impressed and being proud. “Perhaps you’re not completely useless all the time,” he manages.
“Ungrateful child!” Wei-qianbei cries. “Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan, did you ever hear such baseless accusations? Cruelty! I should feed this brat to my donkey.”
“Your threats are terrible compared to Jiujiu’s.”
“What? How dare you! Jiang Cheng only threatens to break legs or stab people in the side. Which, hey, it must run in the family. Oh, don’t look like that, I’m not trying to guilt you, you silly boy, it was barely a bee-sting. Stop looking all pathetic or I’ll have to comfort you, and you know that I will absolutely make it as humiliating as possible.”
“Get away from me! How can you – Hanguang-jun is right there, he’s the Chief Cultivator, you can’t just – “
Hanguang-jun calmly pulls Wei-qianbei's bowl over to his own side of the table so that it doesn’t get knocked over.
“Sect Leader?”
One of the Lanling Jin cultivators has pulled aside the front door a few inches to peer in, eyeing the way that Wei-qianbei is making grabby hands across the table at the guard’s loudly protesting sect leader. They both freeze. Hanguang-jun drops a few slices of bamboo shoots into Lan Sizhui’s bowl with a paternal sort of care.
“Yes?” Jin Ling says eventually.
“Is everything all right? Is…is the Yiling Patriarch causing you any trouble?”
“He’s always causing trouble,” Jin Ling can’t stop himself from saying, but then he says more sternly, “Wei-qianbei means me no harm. You may return to your post.”
“Yes, Sect Leader,” the cultivator says reluctantly, and closes the door again. When Jin Ling turns back around, he sees Wei-qianbei staring at him with wide eyes.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
“You are adorable,” Wei-qianbei coos. “Heavens, it’s like watching a tiger cub trying to roar. I’m having flashbacks to Jiang Cheng being nine years old and practicing his frowny face in the mirror. Lan Zhan, can I keep him? I’ll feed him and take him for walks every day.”
“What the fuck,” Jin Ling manages to croak out. “How dare you – Lan Sizhui are you laughing at me?”
“No talking during meals,” Lan Sizhui says peaceably.

LXC is the legal guardian and adopter for LSZ or LJY, and NMJ has questions.
part 2 of the LJY-adopted-by-LQR fic (now also on ao3)
-
“So, did I knock you up before I went to war or something?” Nie Mingjue asked. “Because I feel like you should’ve mentioned it if that was the case. Possibly in a letter.”
Lan Xichen was so tired that it took him a solid minute to parse what was wrong with that sentence and how to respond, and it was not by following his first instinct to apologize that he should’ve written better letters.
“Stop making fun of me,” he said instead, groping towards some measure of dignity.
Sadly, dignity was in very short supply when you were taking care of babies. Multiple babies. Well, one baby and one toddler, which was somehow worse?
Lan Xichen was pretty sure they’d figured out how to time their crying off each other.
“I would never,” Nie Mingjue said, like a liar, and then he picked up little Jingyi and – Lan Xichen simply cannot find another way to put it – shook him, in a manner not unlike testing a melon for freshness.
For some reason, this made Lan Jingyi stop crying and start making snuffling little giggles instead.
“How did you do that?” Lan Xichen asked, eyes wide.
“Do what?” Nie Mingjue tucked the baby into the crook of his arm and scooped up some food off the table, offering it to him, and Lan Jingy actually ate it. “Xichen, are you feeling all right?”
“Shhh!” Lan Xichen hissed, eyes fixed on the baby, which was neither spitting up everything nor wailing as if his heart was broken. “No unnecessary noise during meals.”
Nie Mingjue snorted in amusement. “Sure,” he said amiably, in the tone Lan Xichen had long ago learned meant ‘nice rules you’ve got there, it’d be an awful shame if someone found a loophole in them’. “This isn’t a meal, though; it’s just a snack.”
Lan Xichen eyed the still-not-crying Lan Jingyi and decided that now was not the time for a spirited debate on the virtues of discipline and fulfilling the merits rather than the word of a rule.
“Where’s monster number one gone?” Nie Mingjue asked abruptly. “He must be very good at hiding, because I looked away for a blink of an eye and he was gone.”
Lan Xichen’s eyes slowly dropped down to where a cloth-covered lump was not-so-sneakily edging towards Nie Mingjue’s foot.
Nie Mingjue was one of the foremost front line fighters of their generation, and possibly the previous one as well. His physical ability was matched only by his incredibly keen senses.
There was no way he was not aware of the lump.
“It’s a real shame, too,” Nie Mingjue continued. “I was planning on doing a test of how far you can throw children, but I think monster two here’s a bit too small to make the test worthwhile. But I guess it just wasn’t meant to be –”
You can’t throw children, Lan Xichen was about to say, except Lan Sizhui was tearing off the tablecloth and jumping up in excitement, shouting, “Here! Here! I’m here! I’m big enough! You can throw me!”
“Why does he want to be thrown,” Lan Xichen murmured, bewildered. He’d never wanted to be thrown around as a child. Had he?
In fairness, he wasn’t sure. No one had ever offered.
Apparently, though, Lan Sizhui did very much want to be thrown around, and Lan Jingyi even condescended to allow Lan Xichen to hold him while he watched.
“Higher! Higher!” Lan Sizhui shouted.
“Really? Is this high enough?” Nie Mingjue held him up at eye level.
“Higher!”
“Like this?” Above his head.
“Higher!”
“You sure?”
“Yes!”
“All right. How about –” Baxia slithered out from her place by the door, zipping over until she was right in front of Nie Mingjue, allowing him to step onto her like a stair, and then zipping upwards to about hip-height, lifting Nie Mingjue and Lan Sizhui with her. They very nearly hit a tree branch with their heads. “– this?”
Lan Sizhui shrieked with laughter.
“It’s too early to introduce them to flying,” Lan Xichen objected, because it was. “Mingjue-xiong”
Nie Mingjue hopped down with a laugh. “All right, one last toss,” he told Lan Sizhui. “Then you nap. Okay?”
“Okay!” Lan Sizhui, who had never once willingly succumbed to naptime in the entirety of the time that Lan Xichen had known him, promised earnestly.
Back into the pile of soft grass he went, giggling the entire time, and amazingly enough he really did fall asleep afterwards. Lan Jingyi, too, had fallen asleep at some point.
“I’ve decided that your brother needs more experience running a sect,” Lan Xichen told Nie Mingjue, who raised his eyebrows. “Starting immediately. I promise to allow you to leave when Jingyi is, oh, shall we say five years old..?”
You could reason with a five year old.
Nie Mingjue laughed.
It was a type of laugh that suggested that he thought Lan Xichen was making a joke. This was incorrect.
“You’d be amazed at how serious I am,” Lan Xichen told him threateningly, “I’m sect leader here, this is my territory, I can have you arrested any time –” but by that point Nie Mingjue was already bundling him off to bed, too, combing out his hair and plying him with snacks and –
This was not helping his argument that Lan Xichen should be allowing him to leave rather than keep him trapped in the Cloud Recesses as a babysitter-slash-love-slave.
Well, he wouldn’t really do that, of course. He’d let him go. Eventually.
It’d probably be good for Nie Mingjue’s stress levels, honestly.
“Seriously, though, how did you do that?” he asked, his head on Nie Mingjue’s lap. “They didn’t cry once.”
“I’m good with kids,” Nie Mingjue said, his fingers digging into Lan Xichen’s scalp in just the right way. “Now can you explain to me how exactly you ended up with them? Two, no less?”
Lan Xichen groaned and covered his eyes with a hand. “Sizhui’s Wangji’s,” he explained. “Not biologically, but he’s put his name down in the family register under his own. But, you know…”
“I know.”
Lan Xichen appreciated that he didn’t need to go into it. The doctors had estimated that Lan Wangji would regain full mobility within three years, so that was the period the elders had mandated for his so-called ‘seclusion’, but with Lan Wangji being locked away like that – even with visitors, even though he was trying his hardest to care for the child from where he was – meant that someone had to care for the child’s day-to-day life until his brother was ready to resume the role.
“Jingyi is a cousin, I think,” he continued. “His parents are dead, and uncle accepted guardianship for him…I think he’s going to adopt him, actually.”
“Then why is he with you?”
“I volunteered.”
“Xichen, I say this with a full heart of affection and tremendous respect for your capabilities,” Nie Mingjue said. “But why in the world would you go and do a stupid thing like that?”
Lan Xichen sighed. The worst part was, he couldn’t even argue that it wasn’t stupid – he was, quite obviously, terrible with children.
“Uncle’s still injured from the war,” he admitted. In fact, his injury was probably even older than the war, dating as far back as the burning of the Cloud Recesses – his uncle had never been much of a fighter, his impressive cultivation strength stemming almost entirely from gentler arts like music and learning and meditation, but when his home and his family and his students were at risk, he’d fought, while Lan Xichen ran. Not just fought; he’d kept fighting long past the point that his body allowed. It only made sense for the bill to need to be paid. “He had a recurrence of an old complaint, not long ago; he started coughing up blood. The doctors insisted that he try to avoid anything that might cause him  stress.”
“Stress. Like, say, a rowdy infant?”
“Exactly like a rowdy infant,” Lan Xichen agreed, glad that Nie Mingjue did not mention that what had happened with Lan Wangji was also likely a source of stress. At least the two of them had slowly started to repair their relationship recently – the heartbreak would kill their uncle sooner than anything else, and Lan Xichen might be weak, but he really couldn’t tolerate the idea of suffering any more loss.
And also, if Lan Wangji could see his way to forgiving their uncle, he might one day agree to forgive Lan Xichen, too.
“I see. So you ended up with the little one, too.”
“Yes. And they hate me.” Nie Mingjue coughed a little. “No, don’t deny it. They clearly hate me. They always cry and spit and yell -”
“They’re children, Xichen,” Nie Mingjue said. “Traumatized children. They do that.”
Lan Xichen didn’t need to open his eyes to know that Nie Mingjue was frowning in memory of pain long past. Lan Xichen remembered, with painful clarity, how young Nie Huaisang had been when Lao Nie had died, how badly he had taken it.
There’d been a lot of crying and vomiting and yelling there as well.
“You’re good with kids,” Lan Xichen said instead of commenting, trading delicacy for delicacy; he would not touch Nie Mingjue’s still-bleeding wounds just as Nie Mingjue avoided his own. “Very good.”
“Well, I like to think so, anyway.”
They remained in blissful, comfortable silence for a while.
“How would it have even worked?” Lan Xichen finally asked. His eyes were still closed, Nie Mingjue’s fingers running through his hair; he never wanted to move again.
“Hmm?”
“If you knocked me up before you went to war. I mean, they’re not even the same age.”
“Well, one of them’s from the affair, obviously.”
“I’m sorry, am I cheating on you now?” Lan Xichen opened an eye and pinned Nie Mingjue with a fierce look that instructed his lover to reconsider.
“Of course not,” Nie Mingjue said, mock-solemnly. His eyes were dancing. “You were so distraught after receiving incorrect news of my untimely demise that you conducted a ghost marriage with my spirit, and then went and had a child to continue my name.”
“…they’re both surnamed Lan.”
“So what? Are you saying I’m not good enough to marry into your sect, is that it?”
Lan Xichen’s cheeks were hurting from trying not to laugh. “I wouldn’t dream of implying such a thing.”
“There you go, then.”
“Can I ask why I felt the need to have a child to continue your name if I had one already?”
“…well, fuck,” Nie Mingjue said. “I’ve got nothing.”
Lan Xichen burst out laughing.

This isn't necessarily abt LSZ, byt it annoys me when ppl are like " you must forgive the ppl who wronged you in order to be a good person"
Bcs some were raised passive, some are used to letting go, and learning to love yourself enough to be angry abt what happened is a rlly important and powerful message
I won't argue abt canon, bcs i have fic for it, but, as healthy as it is, it's also frustrating. LSZ has never been shown as a particularly assertive person, and him being angry at what happened would have been satisfying and shown that he's learned the lesson of not tearing yourself down for other's comfort ( which is more WWX to learn than his tbh, but whateves)
JL, on the other hand, who's angry and assertive and doesn't listen to anyone, him choosing to forgive and forget ( WWX) feels more powerful narratively, bcs it's an active choice, not something that's been trained into him, he chose to let go of the anger before to be more happy
So yeah, I've seen a lot of arguments, but i think this is what boils down to. We want passive characters, those who stood and suffered to get angry and validated, because so few of us ever get the chance to
Except... here's the thing. LSZ didn't learn to "tear himself down for others' comfort". He's a peacemaker, yes, he tries to resolve fights, yes, but that's just because he's the sort of person who prefers peaceful resolutions. Come on, that kid was raised by LWJ. I don't doubt for a second he was spoiled rotten. I think people forget that someone preferring to be quiet and gentle isn't the same as being passive; LSZ doesn't assert himself because... well, he doesn't particularly want to. He lets LJY do it for him, most of the time. I have on multiple occasions seen people insisting there's something wrong with LSZ/WWX and LWJ's parenting because LSZ doesn't like to start fights over things that don't matter at the end of the day, and like... there's nothing wrong with being the type to forgive others and let things go, so long as it isn't taken into doormat territory. LSZ chooses to forgive the Lans for their part in his family's deaths, because the Lans a) played a pretty small part on balance and b) have raised and protected him with love and care his entire life when they didn't actually have to do that; I'd argue that's just as powerful as JL forgiving WWX. It's just quieter. And LSZ does assert himself; he's just quiet about it. He doesn't shout like JL does, but he doesn't let himself be ignored either! Remember, it's LSZ who keeps the juniors from making a huge thing about LWJ tying WWX up with the forehead ribbon; the fact that he did it with a smile on his face and without ever raising his voice doesn't make that not assertive! In fact he seems to be the leader of the multi-sect duckling contingent; they all listen to him, even JL at least some of the time (which is more than most people get). Assertiveness and aggression are not synonymous.
So I guess what I'm saying is... why is it that JL is seen as assertive when he shouts and cries but can never get people to do what he wants (he can't even get LJY to stop calling him 'young mistress'!), while LSZ is seen as passive when he actually does get people to do what he wants without ever raising his voice? Why are screaming, crying tantrums (I love JL but. they are tantrums) assertive while calmly taking control of the group and leading them down the path you've decided is passive? Why should LSZ have to scream his anger to the heavens for it to be real? He's not angry at LWJ and WWX, because why would he be? He's not angry (or at least not more angry than anything else) at the Lans, because they're the family that raised him well. Why does it follow that he's not angry at the people actually responsible, people he never talks to and so has no opportunity to openly tear down for causing his family's deaths? And remember, LSZ temporarily leaves the sect to travel with WN (which he as a disciple would've had to get permission to do, by the way; I'd argue that going to LQR and saying "Hey, I'm gonna fuck off to Qishan with my fierce corpse uncle to learn more about my birth family" counts as asserting yourself!); it's partly to learn about his birth family, but I don't doubt he also wanted time to think about things away from the Lans.
You say his "passivity" is something LSZ was trained into, but... come on, look at the Lans. These are the most stubborn assholes in all the sects. They wouldn't be teaching him to be passive, they'd be teaching him to keep his cool while verbally eviscerating his enemies. He was raised to be polite and to show his elders the deference due to their age and experience; that doesn't make him passive. The only time we see him being anything close to passive is when Madam Mo is hurling insults at him, and I'd say that's more "customer service" than any actual passivity. He's expected not to make demands of his elders (hence why he doesn't go off on JC beyond the bounds of "Hanguang-jun says"), but I say again: he's clearly the social leader of his group. He's not passive, he just follows the example of his uncle (who once got two men who hated each other to swear oaths of brotherhood to make him happy; it wasn't a wise move in the long run, but it's impressive he got as far as he did!) and gets what he wants through diplomacy, rather than being intimidating enough to force people to do what he wants.
I... don't actually know where I'm going with this. I guess I just get annoyed whenever people talk like there's something wrong with LSZ (usually something about him being too passive) when... he's probably one of the mentally healthiest characters in the whole cast! This boy was raised well among people who love and care for him and because of that he's doing really well! He doesn't yell and cry when things don't go his way like JL because he was raised in an environment where he was treated with respect as a person, and he forgives the Lans not because he's been raised to passively take whatever's done to him as deserved (like WWX) but because he loves them, because they earned that love by being good to him. Why should that be seen as passive just because he doesn't yell about it?

character ask game 💚🤍🖤 - so uh, talk to us about Lan Sizhui? 😁😏
one aspect about them i love
Honestly I did not spend that much brainspace on LSZ before writing trust me as though I were your enemy, which is a very *cough* specific and premise-based take on his character, so... speaking from my brief newfound interest in the character, I love the untapped potential of his character? Most of what we see is very surface level--not to say his kindness and proactive Good-Boy-ness isn't genuine if it's not backed by the correct impulses, I think on one hand he genuinely values being considerate and careful and kind (and him being the only Lan junior who tries speaking gently to 'Mo Xuanyu' when he's just acting deliberately 'crazy' still gives me feelings. i, like wwx, have the 'such a nice kid! how tf did the Lan sect spit HIM out?' reaction 😂)
...but on the other hand, 'Lan' Sizhui has no real choice but to be a Good Kid. He's kind of adopted into the Lan family, but his main point of adoption is Lan Wangji, and it happened during the years LWJ was thoroughly destroying all of his Good Boy rep within (parts of, at least) the sect--something I thought about but didn't manage to work thoroughly into the fic was that LSZ probably deals with a lot of spillover dislike by, say, the 33 elders that were severely wounded by LWJ. And then there's all the shit he'd just barely remember... In conclusion, LSZ pretty probably grew up with the impression that Something Bad happened when he was a kid but nobody will talk about it, and dealt with feeling like he was on Thin Fucking Ice with a significant portion of the Lan elders without knowing why. Perfect recipe for a kid to repress any 'bad' feeling or behavior he might ever have!
So... what's under that surface? Especially when he starts learning about the truth of everything that happened at the end of canon, and learns where he actually came from?
Fun to think about.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
I am not familiar enough w how people usually characterize him to really speak on this...
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
something that I did decide on during writing is that while he's not disliked by many people in the younger generations, he really doesn't have any friends except for Lan Jingyi. He doesn't get close to people easily, so it takes someone as enthusiastic and bad at reading subtlety as Jingyi to hang in there and earn the position :P
one character i love seeing them interact with
Tbh I'm not immune, his interactions with WWX and LWJ when he's a little kid hit me right in the heart. It's especially adorable in CQL, when he's sitting in LWJ's lap and you can see LWJ getting baby fever in realtime. They may not be the best guardian-ish figures, but his connection to both of them is still obviously important to him, and seeing the beginnings of it is still painfully sweet.
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
Honestly there's a lot I wish here! I'd like to see something of him traveling with Wen Ning (I've heard there's a movie, but also that it sucks, and based on Fatal Journey i believe it); I'd like to have seen more one-on-one interaction with LWJ when he's older, instead of always just being part of the Group of Juniors. After writing this fic, I'm also wishing that he'd ever really interacted with SMS, lol.
one headcanon i have that involves them and one other character
Separate from any fics i may or may not be writing < <.... I think he had a good, if not at all close, relationship with Jin Guangyao, and looked up to him a little bit (lsz: wow you're repressing EVERYTHING and you're doing it so well i wanna be you when i grow up). He felt a little guilty about it because while LWJ never said anything specific, he didn't seem to like Lianfang-zun much, but whenever LSZ saw him (at conferences and meetings in Jinlintai, or during JGY's frequent visits to the Lan sect) JGY was always super nice and friendly, and jokes aside was modeling a type of poised strength that was very different from LWJ's uncaring-of-social-consequences conduct that LSZ, to say the least, did not feel like he was capable of.
(jgy, on his end, is having a 'wow what a nice kid how tf is he someone adopted by that rude boy lwj' moment)

It's not a fix-it If LBH doesn't have friends
Ok, so the tragedy of the Original Luo Binghe is how empty everything he have is. He is so unsatisfied he would jump at the first chance to marry his worst enemy, someone who abused him, If that man can truly love "Luo Binghe" (I Also have a theory that they're kinda soulmates, in a messed up way, because Airplane originally planned for them to get together, but that theory is a completly different matter).
The point is, Bingmei is happier and satisfied because he has something Bingge never had, a relationship he actually care about. And I don't mean that LBG never cared about any of his wives, specially NYY, but whathever affection he may feel for them was not enough to bring himself to build genuine relationships. No one really loves 600 people, that number is just ridiculus. But he's never satisfied, with all the wives, victories, glory and treasures.
I find It fascinating to compare both LBHs, he is really an interesting character. And, If I was to say everything I think about the tragedy of LBG, this post would be too long and stray too much from what I'm trying to say.
The point is that svsss is a fix-it for pidw, where LBH gets a meaningful relationship. Because of that, it was a wasted opportunity to not let him build meaningful relationships with other characters. It would show what LBG could have had, even in a world without SY, If he allowed himself to.
And there's potential everywhere to It. NYY was the first person after his mother to be nice to him.
He and LMY could bound over interest in romance and their habit of making things up in their minds. They're both dreamers (and they're both into weird s**, except that LMY doesnt want to participate)
QWY helped him when he got out of the Abyss. She projected a lot into him in SVSSS since he saved her right after her sister died, it's something to explore.
There's a lot of Enemies to Friends potential with MF, SHL and MBJ. I've seen him be friends with SHL and MBJ in some fics, but It never explores how they got there, since his first impression of SHL was her invading the Sect, causing destruction and then cheerfully pointing out that SQQ was poisoned and there was no cure. His first impression of MBJ was even worst.
And I only talked about svsss characters until now.l, but crossover brings even more possibilities.
The juniors of mdzs are precious. JL was the only one who didn't start already as an angel in the novel, but he gets better.
LJY likes romance stories, and OYZZ is a romantic as well.
JL is an orphan like LBH and LSZ, is not only an orphan, but raised by a loving parent with no blood ties without knowing anything about his biological family.
In short, we must give LBH some friends, he needs them. And the possibilities are very fun

On how Lan Wangji mourned Wei Wuxian & how Jin Ling and Lan Sizhui parallel eachother.
So, I was thinking about how I don’t really buy the 13 year inquiry fanon, and it got me thinking about the ways LWJ did mourn WWX instead, how healed from his death, and how this contrasts Jiang Cheng’s refusal to move on from the deaths of his parents and JYL.
As we know, when LWJ learned of WWX’s death, he went straight to Burial Mounds, where he retrieved A-Yuan/LSZ and also brought emperor’s smile on his way back, resulting in him branding himself.
With no body to bury, and no shrine of any sort to visit, the branding serves as a physical reminder of WWX. Not only because he had the same mark, but because it also reflects the kind of person WWX was, as he got the scar in the first place saving mianmian. Something LWJ and WWX both share is their moral compass - they’ve always respected each other because of this. It is WWX’s selflessness and drive to always help others that made LWJ fall in love with him, so it is very fitting that this physical reminder of WWX is also such a clear reflection of who he was, and why LWJ loved him.
LSZ also serves as a physical reminder, but while the branding represents the initial pain of grief, LSZ represents healing.
Like the brand mark, LSZ is also a representation of WWX’s morals as he rescued him from the Jin’s encampment, and dedicated himself to protecting him and the rest of Wen remnants. With them being killed during the siege, WWX’s sacrifice would almost be in vain, if not for the fact that LSZ lived, LWJ knows that WWX would think it was all worth it, just for LSZ to live, and that is a great source of comfort for LWJ also. I think we can all agree that LSZ is a good boy, who embodies everything right with the world. Not only did LWJ ensure WWX’s sacrifice was worthwhile by giving him a safe and happy home, he also instilled within him, and lived by, the morals that he and WWX believed in (and he did a good job, WWX’s first impression of LSZ is what a good boy he is!) So LSZ represents healing, and working towards a better future. In contrast to Jin Ling & and Jiang Cheng, LWJ doesn’t tell LSZ about his family or the circumstance of his orphanhood, because he doesn’t want him to grow up with that burden. LWJ doesn’t want the cycles of revenge and debt that has plagued the past to rule the present. So LSZ is a representation of how LWJ heals from grief by working towards a better future and letting go of the bad parts of the past.
In this sense, JL is the antithesis of LSZ, in Jiang Cheng’s grief for his parents and his sister, he poisoned JL with his own bitterness and resentment - giving JL a complex about being an orphan, and inflicting on him this responsibility to avenge his parent’s deaths. Where LWJ doesn’t tell LSZ the truth so that he can live happily and not be burdened by the past, JC pushes all his grief and resentment onto JL.
Unlike WWX’s praise of LSZ, his initial impression of JL is that he’s rude, arrogant and selfish, and he later learns that he is friendless as a result of this attitude (in the same way JC never had any friends in his youth). This is a further indication of how JC, unlike LWJ, does not learn or grow from his experiences, and drags the future generations down with him. This is also reflected in JC’s management of Lotus Pier, the common folk in his territory are too afraid to even approach LP, due to his habit of torturing suspected demonic cultivators - his bitterness is ruining the legacy of the Jiang Sect.
So, where LSZ represents healing from grief and improving the future, JL represents refusing to move on and heal from bad experiences & how holding onto them hurts both yourself, and those around you.
And this is why the idea of LWJ playing inquiry for 13 years feels so out of character to me (aside from the fact that LWJ accepted that WWX rejected him, it'd be pretty rude to bother his soul for 13 years 😐). Because while LWJ never stopped loving WWX, he did not allow himself to get stuck in the past either, he built a life for himself, continuing WWX's legacy through LSZ, and continuing to live by the values that drew them together in the first place.

I’ve seen some deageing Xicheng fics where either of these two are suddenly 5 years old buuuut
What about Jing Ling and Lan Sizhui deageing !!!
Like maybe they are on their first night hunt post seclusion (yunmeng bro reconciliation has happened to a degree) but JL and LSZ get hit with a spell or sth. In the last second. Like this both JC and especially WWX have the chance to see their kids young one last time and catch up on all the emotions and Moments they both lost due to having been too emotional unavailable (and dead obvi).
Also: LXC mostly saw JC as a college he may liked but never knew too much about so he sees JCs soft side aka that seals the final nail in the coffin of accepting his feelings for the grumpy sect leader
And LWJ has a few moments of being a parent and a husband the way he wished 16 (or in this case 18) years ago
Side stories can and should include:
LSZ and JL clinging to one another, cause the only thing they remember from being teens is the feeling of love and comfort towards each other.
LJY and OYZZ trying to impress the adults by being ˋthe best babysitters the world has ever see ´ and trying not to think of each other their friends temporary parents aka each other’s hubby’s.

Okay, I'm putting this under a cut for negativity reasons, because I really did get negative
I don't ship this at all, and tbh I think the way I usually see it shipped involves a not insignificant misreading of LXC and often also of LXC's relationship with JGY.
So the thing about LXC is that he is, in many ways, a very private person, or at least private with himself. Here are the people he seems to be close with: LQR, LWJ, presumably LSZ, NMJ, and to some extent NHS. And JGY.
That is, his family, his childhood friend (and his childhood friend's younger brother), aaaaand JGY. And imho the only people on this list he's emotionally intimate with are JGY and LWJ! I don't think he's even friends with JC, in canon. Like, obviously they know each other, but friends? He's kind to JC a few times, he cares about him in the sense he would prefer he not get hurt, but like, that's LXC about most people; there's nothing personal about it. I think probably their strongest emotional connection on LXC's part that JC is co-raising the child JGY is also raising. And JC...like, I guess pre-timeskip he appreciates praise/kindness from a respected authority figure, I guess that's not nothing? But that's kind of the extent of it.
(I do honestly think that if you're going to ship LXC with someone—as a matter of like, canon interpretation, obviously you can grab the characters and do whatever the heck you want with them if that's what you're into?—you should compare how he acts with JGY. Casual touching, the way they're so often in sync, the way he looks at him, the way he seeks him out and we see them together so often, the way he reacts to him, in MDZS the way they're always talking together—like, I think in some ways for CQL people, of whom I am mostly one, LXC meeting MY so early on can form a misleading impression of his character, because he does open right up to MY, but that's actually very specific to MY! It's not how he usually is at all. He's friendly and kind to people, but usually it's basically impersonal, on his part. And I don't think how he is with any other character can compare; certainly not JC!)
Okay, what about post-canon? JC helping LXC move on from his grief, and all that?
This doesn't work for me on a whole bunch of levels, I'll be honest. Like, first, JC isn't interested in LXC or his grief. Jin Ling is his first priority and HO BOY has JL been through a lot. Plus, you know, now he's a Sect Leader. (He's definitely not going to have an easy time—I recommend reading his interaction with SLY post-temple in MDZS, actually. Granted in CQL LWJ becomes CC, and for JL specifically that's probably better than most alternatives, and certainly than NHS). Emotionally, JC is also dealing with WWX having returned, the whole core reveal, and his own complicated feelings about JGY's death. And...JC is enormously competent in many ways, but dealing with complicated emotional tangles isn't I think particularly one of them. Plus as I said in the JC/WQ post, I have a hard time with JC as he is by the end of canon ending up in a solid romantic relationship at all.
And then there's LXC. The man doesn't want to move on from JGY. He may...think he should want to be more functional? But I think that's mostly as far as it goes. He /definitely/ doesn't want to let go of JGY and start a relationship with someone new; I want to say to idea would horrify him but tbh I don't think it's even plausible enough for him to be horrified about.
But even beyond that, I really do think that LXC is just simply not interested in having any kind of actual personal relationship with almost anyone. He's a lot like LWJ in this, I think, it's just less obvious with him because he is also friendly, kind, and social. After JGY's death I can /maybe/ imagine him making a connection with someone who—it would have to be not just grieves JGY but grieves some of the same things that LXC does, from a similar angle. But that's kind of it.
I mean, I also think CQL LXC is probably going to kill himself. So, uh, that also complicates things. But even putting that aside.
And they're just...not compatible.
I can see the appeal of both of them recovering, but...I really don't think this way of doing it works with the characters.

crack disney aus that i’ll never actually write
beauty and the beast au - wwx is lumiere, jc is cogsworth, jin ling is the beast who throws a fit when lwj tries to take a lotus from his lotus pond and locks him up. lwj is subjected to an intensely flirtatious candelabrum; it’s weird. lsz shows up to take lwj’s place and wwx is DEVASTATED until jc is like, if we get jl and lsz to fall in love we’ll be  human again and you can go chase after that OBVIOUSLY UNINTERESTED dude you were harrassing
the little mermaid sequel au - jin ling is the son of jyl (who used to be a mermaid) and jzx (who went from douchebag prince to prince charming). jin ling is forbidden from going into the water bc evil sea witch jgy wants him dead. ofc nobody cared to inform jl of this so he just assumes his parents are being OVERBEARING HORRIBLE PARENTS, and runs away to the ocean and gets himself turned into a merboy by jgy (who is using him to steal king jc’s magical zidian so he can control all the powers of the sea muahaha), and along the way meets ljy, oyzz, and lsz (who used to be a human but was shipwrecked in the middle of the ocean and wwx used his magic to turn him into a mer-kid and adopt him as his own)
aladdin au - (ish) (okay i’m gonna be honest and tell you that the only reason this falls under aladdin au is bc it was inspired by the song Friend Like Me). wwx is the kingdom’s most skilled sorcerer and adopted brother to prince jc. jc is sent to qinghe bc nmj is looking for a spouse for his little brother nhs. jc has stiff competition in the form of lwj (and other assorted characters). jc is nervous as heck but wwx is like, i got this bro. and proceeds to intro jc to nmj and nhs in the most ostentatious way possible. at one point he claims that JC is as strong as ten men (which he is bc reasons idk) and wwx gets lwj out of the crowd as a “volunteer” and magics himself and lwj to drop into jc’s arms from a considerable height as a demonstration (everyone’s impressed except for lwj who is AGHAST at the liberties this magical miscreant took upon his person)

Hi....If you don't mind me asking, who are your favorite MXTX characters (top 5 from each novel)? And why? I'm sorry if you've answered this question before.
Hi there,
I’m going to go with very subjective answers, not in any way a commentary on which characters is the most complex or well-developed, and try to keep it brief because of course I could allow myself to ramble on forever, as I am prone to do.
MDZS:
Wei Wuxian
Lan Sizhui
Wen Ning
Lan Wangji
Lan Jingyi
As everyone has probably noticed already, I have a clear bias for WWX. Part of it of course is due to the fact that the story is heavily skewed in favour of providing us with a lot of characterisation for our protagonist, sure, but also.... look, I love him 😔. Now! Choosing who comes after him in the ranking is a tough choice, and honestly on another day I might choose a different ranking altogether. LSZ is a Good Boy(TM), who wouldn’t love him? I find Wen Ning’s character pretty interesting and endearing as well. Although fanon!LWJ sucks, I think actual LWJ is a very likeable character. Choosing the last one was tough, but for today let me go with big mouth/pure of heart Lan Jingyi.
TGCF:
Yin Yu
Quan Yizhen
Xie Lian
Hua Cheng
Yushi Huang
This one is really tough because most of the side characters left an impression on me for different reasons, so choosing only 5 was a struggle. But for entirely personal reasons I have to put YY and QYZ first. The characterisation for both of them just hits the right mark for the types of characters I am automatically fond of. What I like about XL is that he follows his own path, how funny he is (often unintentionally) and also the fact that he has rotten luck is just very relatable to me (rip). I like HC because he is mean lmao. And as for YH, I just think she’s neat 💜.
SVSSS: I think this one is a little bit harder for me because I can’t say I have a strong feeling toward any character aside from our POV character? Even with LBH, while I appreciate his character journey, it somehow feels weird to identify him as a “favourite character”? It’s not because I don’t like them per se, they generally all have moments that I liked, but I don’t feel like one made more of an impression on me? It might have to do with the genre of the novel.
