Okay so Re: Luca's tie in the Family Corleone, I thought it was interesting to explain his speech patterns with his pill habit... like that was a lot of backstory just to justify Coppola's use of the stuttering scenes when he talks to Don Corleone? But yeah I guess you'd need some way to explain why Luca acts the way he does around Vito even though they have history together, so that solution works for me lol. And always always love the wiseguy-isms on the page of a book! it hits just right 🤌

Did Vito sacrifice Luca Brasi by sending him on that spying mission?

I know that in the book there's more buildup to Luca's death and that he'd been attending Bruno Tattaglia's club for some time, but the end result is the same.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who knew Luca or knew of him, would think him likely to turn traitor and wouldn't be wary of him suddenly wanting to switch sides.

So was the Don slipping as Sollozzo said or did he decide to send him on a mission that he knew would likely end in his death?

I'm leaning towards the latter because of this quote in the book

" When the door closed Don Corleone gave a small sigh of relief. Brasi was the only man in the world who could make him nervous. The man was like a natural force, not truly subject to control. He had to be handled as gingerly as dynamite. The Don shrugged. Even dynamite could be exploded harmlessly if the need arose"

Sonny makes it clear that their biggest fear is that Luca would turn on them. So did the Don have Luca disarmed, before he could be used against the Corleones?
