I think one of the funniest things resulting from the later 7th Dragon games is that they imply that, of all the playable Lucier from the first game, the Fighter is the one descended from Actual Royalty who might, relatively speaking, have superpowers.
To be fair, Momo Chelsea was probably always going to be a thing once the idea of palette swaps was introduced. And the thought that Ikurakun could just be a Citrine who fell through a time portal is similarly hilarious.
But in a slightly different world, we could have had Princess Harukara...

Gotham and Hannibal inspire some of the crime au?? :) Feels right, its also gritty and interesting. Any specific things you wanted to apply to your own canon?
Yup! Frank is a mash of Harvey Bullock and Hannibal mostly, only way less drunk. Barnaby is heavily inspired by Jack Crawford which is why I mentioned that scene
Generally speaking though it’s very much inspired by both shows and the characters in theme. I’m hoping soon to get Howdy into crime because I want him to go absolutely feral 😂
I haven’t watched other show in a hot sec so I’m not sure what specific elements I wanted to use besides overall dark and gritty themes, murder, and detective stuff. I will say though the uh. The owl mask people in Gotham- the one council thing? Home is inspired by that particular concept. He leads a cult that Wally’s also a part of!

I’ve gotten around to watching ‘Xena: Warrior Musical (The Lost Scroll)’ created by LUCIER & ROSE. It was really good. The costumes weren’t exactly accurate but I assume they did the best with the budget they had. The music was great and told a good story. And the actresses that portrayed Xena (Jessie Macbeth) and Gabrielle (Grace Hamashima) were spot on in characterization and had really good chemistry.
The production only serves to prove to me that Xena and Gabrielle are the greatest love story of all-time. So if you’re interested in a live theater musical revolving around that I’d suggest to check it out.
This is the synopsis copied from the website:
On their way to the Amazon village to celebrate the naming ceremony of a promising new Junior Regent, Xena and Gabrielle learn of a Roman Warlord's plot to steal an invaluable and very powerful item from the tribe. With Joxer's help, Xena uncovers the details of the scheme, but not before our villain Kako attacks the Amazons and kidnaps leader-in-training, Myrina. With Ephiny injured and Myrina missing, Gabrielle has no choice but to promise her presence remains in the village, leading Xena down a path of traveling alone. Aphrodite and Ares manage to narrate the tale despite engaging in their signature battle of wits. Will the Amazons prevail in the face of an endless and devastating greed? Will their new leader, Myrina, live to restore strength to the Amazon Nation? Will Xena and Gabrielle ever express their feelings for one another or will they go their separate ways? This action-packed show is an exciting new way to experience the timeless characters of the Xenaverse. New Songs. New Story. Same hero.

You ever go back and listen to your own music? I've listened to this piece of mine about four times in the last week. I completely (digitally) ripped off Alvin Lucier's "I Am Sitting In A Room" to get the effect I wanted, as the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" is repeated. Each repetition finds more reverberation applied to the previous mantra, until it loses all form, and then slowly reemerges. A devotional piece, to be sure.

This is Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier. It comes out April 9th, 2024 and it’s about an exiled scholar named Hanalei & her childhood friend Sam (a prince) who go on an adventure to find a rare sea dragon egg that can grant wishes. It’s based off of Polynesian myth and has definitely been added to my TBR.

read my full review of dragonfruit by makiia lucier here.
From acclaimed author Makiia Lucier, a dazzling, romantic fantasy inspired by Pacific Island mythology.
In the old tales, it is written that the egg of a seadragon, dragonfruit, holds within it the power to undo a person’s greatest sorrow. An unwanted marriage, a painful illness, and unpaid debt … gone. But as with all things that promise the moon and the stars and offer hope when hope has gone, the tale comes with a warning. Every wish demands a price.
Hanalei of Tamarind is the cherished daughter of an old island family. But when her father steals a seadragon egg meant for an ailing princess, she is forced into a life of exile. In the years that follow, Hanalei finds solace in studying the majestic seadragons that roam the Nominomi Sea. Until, one day, an encounter with a female dragon offers her what she desires most. A chance to return home, and to right a terrible wrong.
Samahtitamahenele, Sam, is the last remaining prince of Tamarind. But he can never inherit the throne, for Tamarind is a matriarchal society. With his mother ill and his grandmother nearing the end of her reign. Sam is left with two to marry, or to find a cure for the sickness that has plagued his mother for ten long years. When a childhood companion returns from exile, she brings with her something he has not felt in a very long time – hope.
But Hanalei and Sam are not the only ones searching for the dragonfruit. And as they battle enemies both near and far, there is another danger they cannot escape…that of the dragonfruit itself.
my review:
For years, Hanalei has lived a life in exile after her father stole a dragonfruit—the egg of a seadragon said to grant anyone’s wish—to save her life. Now, she spends her life studying seadragons until one day she sees her opportunity to return home to Tamarind. Meanwhile, Samahtitamahenele is the last remaining prince of Tamarind in a matriarchal line. He’s being pressured to marry but instead focuses on finding a cure for his mother, who’s been in a coma and whom the dragonfruit Hanalei’s father stole was meant for. With Hanalei’s return to the island, the two set off on a quest to search for a dragonfruit.
I’ve been a huge fan of Makiia Lucier’s since I read Year of the Reaper and immediately ran to read her backlist. Her writing is just so gorgeous and full of yearning, and this book was no exception. Both Hanalei and Sam have been living lives not meant for them—her in exile and him as the default heir. Hanalei’s yearning to return home despite her guilt for what her father did is so strong, while Sam’s longing to see his mother returned is an underlying part of his character.
There’s also the added layer of them being close childhood friends and then abruptly having to cut off contact. The tension between them now…Lucier always knows how to write a romance that cuts you to the bone. I can’t wait to reread this book!

I did a thing where you do art and redraw something so I drew Lucier's first picture. Old one under the cut.

A Death-Struck Year by Makiia Lucier
“You wonder why I stay. Sometimes I wonder too. But I hate to think of a child, of anyone really, lying somewhere sick and scared, waiting for help that does not come.”
