justice for sam

If the spnepisodebracket craze has shown us anything, it's that the supernatural fanbase is extremely divided, with the lowly sam stan seemingly at the bottom of the pile. sam is always last in polls, so this is a bracket for the 10% or so who always votes for him. because yeah, there's 327 episodes of Supernatural, but how many are popular because of a dean or destiel moment? how many good episodes are drowned out because they focus on sam?

i've chosen, with some crowdsourced peer review (special thanks to @spneveryseason, @suncaptor, and @ambersock!) 125 episodes that are Sam Relevant. Some are extremely sam-centric, some just have a shot where sam looks like he's being crucified that gives me brain worms -- i tried to be generous about it to keep a relatively even seasons distribution! matchups will be random and polls will last 24 hours each. in the tradition of @spnepisodebracket (who this is obviously inspired by and would not be possible without!) i'll try to rb a gifset for every episode in the poll!

a final note: no this is not that serious but the criteria for voting here should be how good the episode is as a SAM episode, not as anything else, so please vote accordingly! i am making this for people who actually enjoy sam and if that is not you, then this is not the poll for you!

6x01: Gwen Campbell tells Dean, “My god, you have delicate features for a hunter.” He asks, “Excuse me?” Sam puts out a hand and introduces them, saying, “Dean, Gwen Campbell.” She smiles, saying, “Good to finally meet ya. Sam’s gone on and on.”

6x07: Samuel Campbell turns around from his desk to see Castiel standing behind him, he looks him up and down appraisingly. He asks, “This Castiel?” Castiel nods seriously. Then Samuel says, “You’re scrawnier than I pictured.” 

4x04: Dean glares at Sam and tells him slowly, “If I didn’t know you? I would want to hunt you.”

6x07: Dean responds to the fact that Sam does not sleep, asking, “And it never occurred to you that there might be something off about that?” Castiel looks down at him, brow furrowed. Sam says, “Of course, it did, Dean, I–” He pauses, and Castiel glances at Dean before crossing in front of Sam, staying between him and Dean. Sam finishes, “I just never told you.”

6x05: Dean picks up a young adult vampire novel off of the victim’s desk, saying, “Look at this.” He holds it up to Sam saying, “He’s watching her sleep. How is that not rape-y?” Sam glances at it before telling him, “I gotta concentrate here, Dean.” Dean turns away and flips through the book.

6x08: Dean is just waking up, in a t-shirt and jeans and on top of the covers of his bed. He turns to Sam who is standing at the table dressed in a formal shirt and pants and says, “You didn’t sleep.” He turns away, continuing mostly to himself, “’Cause you don’t sleep.” He rubs his eyes. Sam picks up his suit jacket, saying, “Right.” Dean looks over again responding, “Yeah. That’s not creepy at all.” Sam answers, “Not like I can help it.”

5x12: Dean sits at a bar with a kid who performed a spell to bodyswap with Sam. They take a shot, and then Dean says, “Wow, is it just me or are we actually drinking together?”

6x05:  Sam and Dean sit at a bar holding beers, and Dean turns to Sam, saying, “When’s the last time we had a beer together anyway?”

4x22: Sam listens to the end of a fabricated voicemail using Dean’s voice, and it says, “You’re not you anymore, and there’s no going back.” He closes his eyes and exhales slowly, lowering the phone.

6x07: Dean and Castiel stand slightly apart from Sam, who is beaten bloody and tied to a chair. Dean glances at Sam as he asks Castiel, “So, is he even still Sam?” Castiel turns around to consider him before answering, “Well, you pose an interesting philosophical question.” Sam looks at them pensively.

5x12 clarified that Dean and Sam being perfect vessels is purely biological. which like duh obviously but they don’t even need to be present in their body for that body to be useful. the kid who swaps bodies with Sam in this episode is being coached by a demon into saying yes to Lucifer so that Lucifer can take over. so like sam and dean’s soul or essence or whatever don’t even need to be present in the body at the time consent is granted

mmmkay I have to talk about this episode because I can't process this, but I'm gonna put it under a cut bc I don't want to make y'all scroll through my angry rant. this is about Lucifer 5x12, Daniel Espinoza: Naked and Afraid

my sister and I are watching Lucifer 5B. she's a few episodes ahead of me. she warned me that 5x12, the ep centered on Dan, is very bad, but she didn't really like the previous 3 episodes either, so I thought she just doesn't like Dan and that made the ep boring for her. because hey, the episode itself was good. yeah, there were weird cuts that threw me off constantly, and it was all over the place, but it was about Dan, trying to process his crazy day, and I was hoping it was gonna lead to him processing the other crazy stuff too. and I would have been here for that.

but the last five minutes... I just can't. it wasn't just bad, it was downright cruel. poor guy has been through so fucking much, and he can't get five fucking minutes of break. the Netflix episodes have been so bad to him (and to Ella too, but that would be an even longer rant that we don't have the time for now).

the thing is, that big final gunfight? it was a plot twist for sure, but it had no emotional stake at all, because as soon as it started, it was obvious that it's either fake or it will be undone. no fucking way they would leave Dan in a club full of dead people. and then Maze took a bullet for Dan, which could have been a nice moment, except, again, no emotional stake, because they won't kill one of their main characters halfway through the season, and not like this.

so instead there was Dan, completely broken, mourning Maze, mourning his friends from improv class, feeling guilty over the mobsters and gangsters who died, just starting to realise that the antidote is gone and he will die too, his daughter will lose her father, and the few hours he has left to live will be spent either in police custody or among a room full of dead people. all this after finding out about the existence of celestials, after God literally exploded him and put him back together, after finding out the woman he loved and lost and still mourns was the Goddess of All Creation...

and Lucifer did all this out of petty revenge for a completely justifiable action on Dan's part.

I'm just. so fucking angry at this episode. Dan went through a lot, and he didn't deserve any of what happened in this episode. and the fact that they still ended it with Dan somehow thinking this was a good experience that helped him?? fuck that

also, I read a spoiler accidentally, which said that Dan dies in 5x15, and if that's true, I'm definitely gonna stop watching. in all honesty, if I didn't know Eve is coming back in the next ep, I would quit this show for good right here. because this crossed the line for me. but the whole reason I even made myself watch 5B is Eve, so I will hold on for her sake.

but if Dan does die in 5x15, then I don't think I'll be back for s6. I've been watching since s1, and I wanted to finish the show, but I'm drawing a line.

EDIT: okay it's been about 20mins since I posted this but there's one more thing: this episode would have been great, if you remove the last five minutes, the final scene in LUX goes as planned, Luis and co. are dealth with by the Russians, Dan gets the antidote, everything is fine. make that, maybe add a final scene of Dan taking the first step towards getting better, make it fit into 40mins, and it would have been a great filler ep for a 22-episode season. because it still involved most of the main characters, still moves the overarching season plot forward, gives more screentime to a main character who usually has less lines and storylines, it's unique, not the regular format. all in all, this episode, with a little tweak, would have been perfect for a regular season. but as a full 60-min episode of an 8-episode season?? no. it took up too much time, took away too much time from the overarching plot (I mean, 4 episodes in idk what that is, but I'm sure there is one), and didn't even move along Dan's personal story in a good way.

congratulations. all you've managed to do is further traumatise your character. great job.
