justice for sam

If the spnepisodebracket craze has shown us anything, it's that the supernatural fanbase is extremely divided, with the lowly sam stan seemingly at the bottom of the pile. sam is always last in polls, so this is a bracket for the 10% or so who always votes for him. because yeah, there's 327 episodes of Supernatural, but how many are popular because of a dean or destiel moment? how many good episodes are drowned out because they focus on sam?

i've chosen, with some crowdsourced peer review (special thanks to @spneveryseason, @suncaptor, and @ambersock!) 125 episodes that are Sam Relevant. Some are extremely sam-centric, some just have a shot where sam looks like he's being crucified that gives me brain worms -- i tried to be generous about it to keep a relatively even seasons distribution! matchups will be random and polls will last 24 hours each. in the tradition of @spnepisodebracket (who this is obviously inspired by and would not be possible without!) i'll try to rb a gifset for every episode in the poll!

a final note: no this is not that serious but the criteria for voting here should be how good the episode is as a SAM episode, not as anything else, so please vote accordingly! i am making this for people who actually enjoy sam and if that is not you, then this is not the poll for you!

John Winchester - The Road is Paved with Darkness?

Are we really watching John Winchester’s villain origin story?

Are we really watching fate? Knowing how the story ends?

Are we inexorably heading for Mary’s demon-deal to resurrect John, Mary burning on the ceiling courtesy of said demon, Azazel, and John descending into revenge obsession and neglectful parenting?

Certainly The Winchesters has taken pains to show us the ways in which John Winchester is already messed up:

1) He carries the emotional wound of abandonment (so far as he knew, for most of his childhood) by his father, Henry Winchester (Daddy issues)

2) He carries the emotional wound of losing his best friend (lover?) in Vietnam, and suffers from trauma and flashbacks (PTSD)

3) He is clearly attracted to hunting, in part, because of the opportunity it provides not to put down the war, claiming “I was born to do this” (Violence)

4) He is already more willing to think blanket “monsters bad” than his companions. John is the one who quickly decides that Ada’s part-Djinn son needs killing in 1x05 Legend of a Mind, rather than being willing not to rush to judgement, and he’s proved wrong (Black-and-White thinking)

Of course, the Supernatural text presents a complex John Winchester (not simply a villain) someone who is brave (who did not break in Hell) as well as someone obsessive, someone who loves his sons (finally giving his life and soul to Azazel in exchange for Dean’s life) as well as having royally fucked them up. We glimpse (in off-screen hints or in flash-back) a John who drank too much during his kids’ childhoods, who (probably) beat Dean, who frequently left his sons alone in shitty motel rooms without enough food, who definitely abandoned Dean to teach him a lesson for stealing food after not providing enough, who moved his kids around so they were out of school more than in, who had another secret son on the road, Adam, and fucked him up too, as well as Sam and Dean further, when they eventually learned about their half-brother...

The SPN narrative operates on two levels in relation to John. There is an American-hetero-family-values story which fits some classic Hollywood tropes; the man gone vengeful beserker after losing his woman (which is supposed to lend legitimacy to his violence) and a “true love never dies” trope which sees John and Mary lovingly reunited in the alternative timeline of 14x13 Lebanon and apparently also in Heaven together at last (15x20) although we dont see it:

And yet, in parallel, is a narrative that tells us John and Mary were, in fact, forced to fall in love by a Cupid as part of an angelic breeding programme, designed to give birth to perfect Michael and Lucifer vessels (Dean and Sam) to bring on the apocalypse. That they were not happy together, but struggled with fights and John’s absences once they kids were born (as Dean tells Sam in 5x16 Dark Side of the Moon);

Because SPN was so centrally about Fate vs Free Will, because Slaughterhouse 5 was so clearly evoked in SPNWin 1x01 Pilot (which is a non-linear narrative), because Dean is framed as the narrator (which puts him the place previously occupied by Chuck/ God) I do wonder if The Winchesters is not simply earlier in a linear timeline which leads, inexorably, to Supernatural (Fate) but is Holy Ghost Narrator Dean’s dreamscape/ alternative in which he tells a story which saves his parents from their fate (Free Will).

Are we watching the darkness slowly creeping in, or are we (as Leonard Cohen sings) seeing the cracks in everything, and finding out how the light gets in?

i don't usually read the summary on netlix (or elsewhere) but "undying trust" had my brain snap into focus in no time flat.

was thinking too about that whole born again virgin episode (9x08) because of course they've done that before!

DEAN You know, it wasn't long ago, I thought we had it made. We saved the world. We got Cass back. We had Mom back. I mean, it wasn't perfect, but still, we had 'em. And now... SAM Now they're all gone. And Mom, what they did to her... I just fell for their company line. Man, I... I saw what they were doing, and I – and I thought, Hunters on that scale, working together... how much good we can do. And once I was in, I... I just followed. 'Cause it was easy. Easier. DEAN Easier than what? SAM Easier than leading.

the relief of letting someone else make some decisions is a big one, if you can do it. the idea of leading feels a little out of left field though since it's basically just him and dean on equal footing and occasionally working with other people? being independent contractors vs employees

SAM Is this how you pictured it? The end? DEAN Oh, you know it's not. I always thought we'd go out like... Butch and Sundance style. SAM Yeah. Blaze of glory.

man, i really have come to love jody and her dynamic with them. within the story, bobby obviously played a bigger role for them as a parental figure, but for me kim rhodes is so good at connecting with them and playing up that kind of particular familial teasing/bickering/fondness - she makes me believe that she really is family to them. not just the, we like you, so we're adopting you thing they do with everyone they come across these later seasons.

oh no they've deployed a sweet little chunk for sam now i'm really going to cry. also know a conversation that's coming since i've seen gifs of it many times

they made this bmol bed so maybe a big dumb shootout action sequence was the only way to lie in it but it sure is a lot less... compelling, compared to what dean's doing. course, every time we're in the old house with mary (2x20, 5x16) it's in an episode i sobbed my way through. so. that's doing some of the work for them here too

jensen did good with this one. later seasons he seems to not quite get there as intense with the emotions all the time like he did in early seasons, but he definitely got there in this one. and that was a long speech too

glad we didn't need to face any more redemption arc with torturer lady, killed ignominiously offscreen (ok i had to look up the spelling/definition to doublecheck and realized in my head i had dropped an entire syllable AND listening to the pronunciation had it way wrong. good thing i've never tried to say that out loud lol at best i think i was thinking ig-NO-muss-ly instead of ig-no-MIN-ee-uss-ly)

here at least is a throwdown that i can get behind, we've got many reasons to hate this dude and wanna see dean beat the shit out of him

Season 5B feels a bit like one filler ep after the next. I mean it's not per se terrible and boring but a lot of the eps leave me ???? like the point was what exactly?? I do have 3 eps left but overall it's kinda weird in a way and it feels a little alienated from the rest.

Plus, Lucifer not saying the L-word is something I get and I expect it to happen in 5x16 probably but the way how Deckerstar is being handled and act also leaves me a little ??? Like please, enough with this back and forth. lmao

Also... the whole God thing might have been amusing at first but now Luci wants to become God? Like what? I am ??????

my favorite Lucifer episodes continued...@catty-words

5x03 – I love the parody of this episode – I love the revelations made in this episode – I love that it isn’t resolved at the end.

5x05 – THIS EPISODE. I love that it’s Chloe and Amenadiel that finally get paired together – I love that they both come together to help the other with what they are struggling with – I love that he helps her but also that Chloe concludes on her own as well. And the END. The end of this episode is like a dream.

5x08 – this episode brings together my other favorite pairing on the show – anytime Lucifer and Ella work together it’s so fun to watch – they support each other in the best ways and their friendship is grounded in this belief that you can only find in a true friend. And seeing them both distraught and working through a case together because of the circumstances at play, it’s great storytelling.

5x13 – even though I feel like the show could have delved into Linda’s storyline a bit more and with a bit more depth, I’m glad it got highlighted this episode and I’m glad our favorite partners got to see her through it.

5x16 – I mean, this finale is a FINALE. I’ll just leave it there.

I'm not one of the people who really hates late seasons, but like I definitely think there's been a downgrade in s12 and s13 (haven't watched s14 or s15 yet). Idk quite how to articulate why I feel this way, but I think it has something to do with how the story and the characters are presented. Like s12 and s13 have more stuff happening while also having far less substance.

In s1 it was mostly MOTW episodes, but every single episode you learned something new about the brothers and how it affected their relationship. That stays true for most of the early seasons. Then there started to be far more complex overarching plots like the Apocalypse in s4 and s5 or the MoC stuff in s9 and s10 and other things. I think the main thing that distinguishes them from s12 and s13 is how those arcs all contribute to Sam and Dean's characters and their relationship with each other.

Some people may dislike Carver era (I don't), but it did a really good job at having all of the conflicts (except for some of the angel stuff that was Cas' problem) circle back to the characters. The Trials were deeply interconnected with both Sam and Dean's mental states, and the MoC explored Dean's relationship with helplessness and anger and violence. That plot culminated in Sam letting the Darkness be released which proved Sam was lying in s9 when he claimed he wouldn't do extremely questionable things to save Dean. These seasons had more overarching plot but they all fit into building up the brothers' relationship.

S12 has three main plot lines: Mary, BMoL, and Lucifer/Lucifer's baby. The frustrating thing with s12 is that those plots all have potential. Lucifer being back was a great time to explore Sam's headspace, especially since they'd been forced to ally with Lucifer at the end of s11. They could've had personal moments, but instead they went for the grand "the devil possesses the president and sires a super powerful mindcontrolling baby" route which, yeah, is more dramatic, I guess, but it doesn't tell us anything new about Sam or build his relationships further. s5 had this through line about Sam's deep inner anger and resentment and how that connected to Lucifer. While possessed at the end of the season, Lucifer makes him kill a bunch of demons who've been helping him be controlled his entire life and he was scared but he also enjoyed it. That's what made his relationship with Lucifer interesting. s7 has a thing about Sam "letting him in" and s11 dances around that before he refuses to be his vessel again. In s12 Sam is much less angry with the world and in a far more stable place in his life, there's a lot to say about how he'd react to Lucifer now and what do they do with it? Pretty much nothing. He looks scared when he's around him. Yes, it's very good acting on Jared's part and I'm glad for the crumbs, but there just isn't the actual integral-to-the-plot substance that there was in earlier seasons.

And then the brought back Mary! I may be in the minority, but I actually really liked the whole actually Mary kinda sucked too thing. There were hints of it in earlier episodes (mostly 5x16), but it was interesting to see how the boys reacted to her. There was a lot of characterization information in their relationship with her. How Sam tended to get along with her better, but Dean seemed more inclined to reach out. Dean's childish dreams that maybe if his mom was around his life would be better were crushed as he realized that Mary wasn't anything like he thought he remembered her to be (and that she was actually far more like him, even in some less positive ways). Sam trying to play family peacekeeper, a position he'd never had to take before. It culminates in Dean realizing that he blamed Mary for everything that had gone wrong in his life (even if it wasn't totally her fault) then forgiving her for making the deal to save John because he understands her (anyone else think of the moment in s5 when Sam tells young John that he forgave his father for everything because he now understands what it's like to go through a loss that breaks you?).

That's the sort of stuff that I fell in love with Supernatural for. It tells you about the brothers and their relationship with each other and with other people. Their relationship with Mary could've been one of the most interesting things the show did, except they bungled it by mashing it together with the BMoL plot. Instead of developing more of Sam and Mary's relationship or making it so that Dean's confrontation at the end of the season seemed less abrupt, they focused far more on the increasingly-cartoonish BMoL enemies. And it's not like there was nothing there with that plot. There was potential for commentary on the good of the many vs the good of the few and the existence of good monsters and shades of gray, but instead they made them be evil British people who brainwash people and torture them for no fucking reason. They establish that most of the operatives were abused and manipulated only to kill them all anyway (a really bad look when your good guys are supposed to save people and believe that some "monsters" can be changed). What does "evil British people" tell you about Sam and Dean? It's briefly mentioned that Sam wanted to just follow orders and not lead sometimes but only in one conversation and it's never explored again. They just go "oh we can help people" then "whoopsie we were right and they actually were totally evil lets go kill them!"

And s13 has the whole Jack thing which could be an exploration of nature vs nurture but instead they try so hard to make the audience like Jack that the subject is just barely touched on. Sam is projecting onto him but never has any self-awareness of it, and Dean gets over his rational if very harsh reservations within a few episodes. What does that tell us about them? It could say a lot, but instead they're making a man in his late twenties act like a toddler for sympathy points. I actually like Jack, but I kinda wish he'd earned it more. Idk I still have a ways to go with s13, maybe they do start engaging with the themes they've hinted at more. I've liked how they've discussed Dean's depression which has been present in the show for a long time (s7 dealt with it a lot), and I also liked how in 13x04 Sam blew up with his feelings about how he felt that he didn't have a connection with Mary and his desperation for that is part of why he (rightly) has hope that Mary's still alive. The alternate universe where they don't exist also gives room to explore their places in their own world.

Idk I think there's lots of room to build on their characters even after thirteen seasons. I just hope that they go with what they have and stay grounded in how things inform their relationships instead of going for the flashy "wow look how cool/grand in scale this is!" choices like they did in s12.

Round 2 Finished!

Round 2 polls have all ended! Winners and the percentage by which they won are below the cut. Any episode that won by less than 5% is bolded.

A few notes on the winners:

5 out of 16 episodes are from the post-Kripke era, a relatively similar distribution to Round 1's winners (31.25% to 35.42% last round)

Episodes from seasons 1-8 all made it in. Seasons 2, 4, and 5 are now the most represented, with 3 episodes each graduating into Round 3.

This was a much closer round than the last one! Highlights included Metamorphosis beating out Bad Day at Black Rock and My Bloody Valentine beating out American Nightmare in the last few hours of their polls, The Great Escapist beating out On the Head of a Pin in the last fifteen minutes of its poll, and Born Under a Bad Sign and Nightmare going into a runoff after their original poll ended in a tie. The runoff was also extremely eventful, flipping back and forth between the two in a hotly contested race until Nightmare finally took the lead in the final half hour.

While Round 1 averaged about 200-250 votes per poll, this round averaged closer to 400 votes per poll. Group 8 (3x03 v 9x10 v 4x04) had the most with 549 votes, Group 4 (5x13 v 7x14 v 2x10) had the least with 261 votes. The 1x14 v 2x14 runoff poll blew the rest out of the water, however, with a whopping 878 votes.

Round 3 will be 8 polls of 2 and will start this (Sammy) Friday, 4/7!
