“Camilo, stand straight,”
“Ay,” Camilo groaned, but did as told. “I’m standing straight.”
“Five years. For five years I’ve been telling you this,” Y/N said, putting up five fingers. He looked at her palm, nodding.
She didn’t know what to expect, but what he did next was not it. Camilo placed his own palm against hers and interlocked their fingers. Bringing their joined hands higher, he placed a tender kiss on the back of her palm. She bit the inside of her cheek at this action. If there was one thing to always expect from Camilo, it was him being unexpectedly cute.
“Dork,” she muttered, untangling her fingers from his grasp.
She placed her elbow back on her knee and rested her chin on her palm. Staring ahead, she tapped her fingers against her cheeks.
Camilo stood beside her, not feeling like joining his girlfriend on the stone wall. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” she responded, but her eyes remained on the setting sun. Like she wasn’t exactly listening. Camilo’s eyebrows scrunched. Turning his whole body towards her, he took a step forward. Now vis-a-vis and blocking the view, Y/N had to look up at him.
“Mi vida, you’re spacing out,” he deadpanned.
“I’m just taking in the view,”
“This isn’t the first time,”
Y/N straightened. Her hands fell down onto her lap, her torso was now perpendicular to the ground. That way, they could see eye to eye. But did they?
“I’m fine, Camilo,” she said.
“I hope so,” he sighed. “Because if you weren’t that would mean you’re not telling me something I should know.”
She tensed at the seriousness that overcame both his features and voice. This was the less common side of Camilo Madrigal. The one he reserved for scolding his loved ones for not taking care of themselves. Serious Camilo was someone she got to meet a lot these past few months, actually.
Instead of responding, she reached down and gently took his wrist. Sliding her hand into his own, she brought it up. She placed it on her lap. With a sigh and a nod, she started playing with his palm, his fingers. Caressing his smooth skin, delicately touching his rough from all the work fingertips. She couldn’t help but notice how quickly the tension left him and soon his hand went limp. Free for her to play with.
“You care a lot,” she said quietly. “But you don’t need to worry about me. I’m fine. I’m happy actually.”
By closing his fingers on her own, he stopped her little game. “You are?”
“Very.” she smiled.
“Mhm,” he hummed, stepping closer and moving to hold her other hand. “Why? What’s causing you to be so happy?”
A soft laugh escaped Y/N’s throat. “I know you know. You just want to hear me say it.”
“Maybe.” he let go of her hands. His own made their way to her waist. His fingers rubbed up and down her sides, dancing across her skin. “Come on, say it.”
“Dios, it’s you.” she rolled her eyes. “There. Ego boosted enough?”
He shook his head, before staring deep into her eyes and placing his forehead against hers. “I’m gonna need a name. Who did you say makes you happy?”
She pressed her lips tightly as a smile spread across her face. “Camilo.” she responded after having a mental debate with herself about whether she should or not.
“Oh? Who’s that? There are a lot of Camilo’s in this world. You’re gonna have to be more specific-“
“Madrigal, jeez. It’s Camilo Madrigal,” she laughed, cutting him off.
“Camilo Madrigal? What about him?” he kissed her cheek.
“You’re insufferable, I can’t believe you,”
“That sounds like a you problem.” he kissed her other cheek. “What about him?” he repeated his question.
“Camilo Madrigal makes me happy,” she gave in.
He pulled away unconvinced. Raising his brow and pursing his lips, he stared at her. Y/N groaned.
“Camilo Madrigal makes me very happy, the happiest actually,”
“And?”
“And I love him very much,” she said, wrapping her arms around his neck. She pulled him back to her. “I love him more than anything.”
“That’s my girl,” he whispered before kissing her deeply.

Bebé's First Beach Day
I wrote this before I lost my mind. I figured my last post for a while should be fluff, so enjoy some Madrigal fluff. Work in progress. Maybe.
Summary:
Thanks to Camilo, little Mirabel's first day at the beach does not go according to plan
Julieta stood in the middle of the bathroom, trying to wrangle her usually mild-mannered toddler into standing still so she could put sunscreen on her soft, delicate skin. Mirabel had been giddy with excitement all morning.
They'd taken a much needed week-long vacation to mamá's beach house in Cartagena. The whole family had come, which basically meant complete and utter chaos. But it would be completely and totally worth it. The house was beautiful. Right on the beach, it featured not one, but two hot tubs, a pool, 6 bedrooms, a fitness room, and a very spacious kitchen (which Julieta was absolutely not excited about at all, not at all.) The whole family was excited. Luisa, Isabela, and Agustín had been hyping Mirabel up all week.
Agustín was especially excited for this particular trip. It was Mira's first trip to the beach. The rest of the family had gone a few months prior, but Mirabel had been sick that week, so they all stayed home, much to Isa and Lu's (and Agustin’s) chagrin.
Agustín absolutely loves the beach. He loved taking Isa in the water for the first time, and after that it sort of became a rite of passage, for him to take all of their babies in the water for the first time. He absolutely loved hearing their squeals of excitement and pure joy. It filled Julieta with such happiness and pride to see how amazing he was with their babies; his patience, his unconditional love, and his easy going goofiness were some of the things she loved most about him.
Shaking herself out of her thoughts, Julieta tickled little Mira's tummy and tried to pull her closer.
"Mira, bebita, stand still, please! Mamí needs to put this on your face so you don't burn!"
Mirabel looked adorable in her little two piece swimsuit, a white and turquoise set with ruffled edges and cute cartoonish butterflies. Her little white sandals were waiting by the door. Julieta knew Mirabel wouldn't last long in them, but she couldn't help it. They were so cute, and she knew they'd look even cuter on her little bebita.
Mira took both of her chubby little hands, and cupped her Mamí's cheeks with them.
"Face!"
"Yes, bebita, I need to put this on your face, so your pretty skin doesn't burn!"
"Mamá face pretty!"
Julieta didn't think she could fall more in love with this child, but here she was. Pressing their foreheads together, she attacked Mirabel's little face with kisses. The little girls' laughter rang through the house like the sweetest song.

Note
Ayoo I discovered your blog not long ago and I find that what you write is really cool, so if you are interested can you make headcanons of the Madrigal grandchildren when they do summer activities with their S/O pls :))?
Ooo sounds fun
Summer Activities w/ the Madrigal grandkids
This is an interesting idea, I like it! Antonio isn’t on here tho bc he’s a wee babe. Sorry this took forever to answer I kinda forgot about it
warnings: none???
Isabela
I honestly think summer is Isa’s favorite season
Everything’s so bright and colorful and alive
So you guys would be all over the place
Lazy days at the beach
Wandering around the forest
Hell maybe even surfing
Oooo and food
Popsicles, ice cream, etc
There would rarely be a time you guys had a healthy meal
Idk if this counts as a summer activity but y’all would definitely do tie-dye projects as well
Luisa
I can’t really see Luisa doing anything super crazy or active
But she does really love hanging out at the beach with you
She would love making sand castles, burying each other in the sand, and collecting sea shells
She very much enjoys goofing off in the shallows with you
But Luisa is a more laidback person so her favorite is being sprawled out on a big ass blanket or towel under a big ass umbrella with you next to her
On said blanket or towel you guys would sit and watch the sunset
Your knees would be loosely tucked to your chest
She’d be leaning back on her hands with her legs spread out in front of her
You would sigh and rest your head on her shoulder
In return Luisa would rest her head on the top of yours
As the sun dips below the horizon your guys’ wide, lovesick grins would still be shining bright
God it would just be so wholesome, much like everything else with her
Mirabel
You would have to drag Mira out of the house
I mean she doesn’t like being cooped up and would love to go out with you but it’s just so friggin hot
So you’d have to bribe her with a “we can get fabric while we’re out?”
She’d be all dramatic and flop out of her chair and be like “fineeeee”
So y’all would get cold treats and roam about the market and Mira would insist that you were just here for fabrics but you’d lead her everywhere else
You guys would be sweaty as hell but you’d still hold hands
Idk it just seems like Mira would love holding your hand
You’d have so much fun shopping and ppl watching the heat would be forgotten
And by dinner you’d be so full of street food you’d have to skip the family meal
Dolores
Dolores would also not be doing anything super exciting
She’d go shopping and take walks around the town and spend days at the beach with you
I know, I know, I’ve said the beach for a lot of these but that’s the only summer activity I can think of
She seems like a pretty mature person but I could see her building sand castles and splashing around in the shallows
She’d love to walk along the shore as the sun sets, talking about nothing and everything, occasionally picking up a pretty seashell
She doesn’t seem like she’d be a fan of sweets either so probably not too many frozen treats but she’d enjoy an ice cream I think
Camilo
Oh boy
Summer activities with Camilo would be fun but chaotic as hell
I mean almost everything with him is but ya know
Like Isa, you and Milo would also be all over the place
You’d be dancing around town to street performers’ music
Handing ice cream and popsicles out to kids while stealing a few for yourselves
Exploring the forest, walking in streams, splashing in rivers
And if you’re going to the beach you’re gonna be there all day
You’ve got food, floaties, blankets, towels, more food, and one giant ass umbrella
Like it’s so big you’re pretty sure Camilo had to ask specifically for this size
You two are having a blast, building sand castles, finding critters in the sand, starting full blown splash wars in the water
You’d have to fight birds off your food but you were giggling about it after so it wasn’t all bad
You guys would be walking back to your blanket and umbrella as the sky starts to turn orange, finally settling down to watch the sunset
You’d plop down on your blanket and Camilo would wrap a big towel around you both, pulling you close and resting his chin on your shoulder
You’d probably take a deep, content breath and say “it’s beautiful, isn’t it?”
And I have no doubt he’d say “yeah” but not even be looking at the sky
Instead he’s looking at you
You’d scoff and laugh and shove him a little “god you’re so cheesy” but you can’t deny the blush
Camilo would laugh and pull you back into him and be like “ayy, you know you love it”
You’d probably miss the sunset bc of all your flirting and goofing around

Encantober Day 4 - Head Pats
@encantober-official
🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
It's not so much that Luisa misses the pats to her head.
It's just… well... the thing is... Oh, who is she kidding? She does miss them. A lot.
But what a childish thought! What a ridiculous notion! She is 19 years old, pretty much an adult. She is bigger and taller and stronger than anyone else for miles.
She does not need to get her head patted.
But sometimes she will walk through the village and see a mother or a father ruffle the hair of their child. And sometimes Luisa's steps will falter and her eyes will linger a little bit too long on the sight. When the parents notice her she will smile and wave and ask if they need help with anything to cover up her staring.
How childish. How ridiculous.
Especially since she is not deprived of physical affection at all. Admittedly, there was a time where it could have been more, where each family member was too wrapped up in their own problems to pay much mind to the needs of others. Where a hug or a hand on your shoulder were rare commodities indeed.
It's gotten so much better with Tio Bruno's return and the whole Casita fallout.
Luisa is getting hugged all the time now. All of them are. Some days it feels like there is constantly someone hanging off of her. Mirabel is linking arms with her every time they take a walk through the village.
(Luisa knows it's mostly so Mirabel can pull her away in case someone bothers her too much with chores, but she'll keep mum about it. Her little sister thinks she is so sly).
And Isabela will touch her arm every chance she gets. Grab her wrist to show her something. Poke at her biceps to get her attention.
Mama and Papa mostly rub her back or take her hands to give them a squeeze.
But that's the thing. All of the physical contact never goes higher than her shoulders. Mama will sometimes sneak a kiss to the cheek when she catches Luisa sitting down, but that's about it.
Luisa is too tall. She towers above everyone. If anyone wants to touch her above the shoulders, Luisa has to bow down a little or they have to stand on their tiptoes and why would they, if everything else of her is so much easier to reach without acrobatics?
But while Isabela is very tactile with her affections again, Luisa misses how it used to be when they were little.
When Luisa was still smaller than her big sister, Isabela would constantly ruffle her hair and give her head a pat afterwards. Luisa remembers the feel of little hands rubbing through her hair, the pressure on the top of her head. Even after getting her gift, after becoming the strongest girl in all of the Encanto, a head pat from Isabela managed to make her feel vulnerable in the best possible way. Small without feeling insignificant. Isabela's hands in her hair meant safety and familiarity. Her big sister, looking out for her.
But then Mirabel's ceremony happened and Isabela grew more and more distant and serious and Luisa grew taller and taller until she towered over her big sister and Isabela had to stand on tiptoes to reach her head or Luisa had to stoop low so her hermana could reach it.
And Luisa could see Abuela's disapproving look over their heads. Could hear her mutter about growing up and letting go of childish gestures. And she could see Isabela going to war with herself. Wanting to make her Abuela proud, but also wanting to be a big sister.
And so Luisa did what she had always done best. She took the pressure off Isabela and made the decision for her. Stopped stooping and bowing. Kept her back straight and head held high.
And sooner rather than later Isabela stopped trying to reach upwards. Everyone did.
So it is actually Luisa's fault the head pats stopped and she has no business missing them.
Now if only she could stop thinking about it every time she visits the village.
She is once again watching a father ruffle his son's head with a wistful expression on her face when Isabela finds her.
"Luisa!" she says and lightly punches her arm. "Dinner has been ready for a while. We are all waiting for you."
Luisa startles and fails her hands. "Oh, my I'm so sorry. The donkeys got out again and I-"
"Again??" Isa narrows her eyes. "That guy! Didn't we tell you to let him deal with them himself? He'll never cough up the money for a new fence if you always help him."
Luisa rubs her neck and smiles a little sheepishly. "But what if the poor things run away? The mountains can be treacherous. I don't want them to get hurt."
She dares to look at Isabela. Her older sister looks unbearably fond.
"Ah, Luisita. Always have to look out for you, don't I?"
Isabela hasn't called her Luisita for many years. Maybe that's the reason why she unthinkingly raises her arm and goes on her tiptoes. Luisa instinctively knows that Isa is not merely trying to reach her shoulder or upper arm.
The movement comes naturally. If Luisa had thought about it, maybe she would have frozen with a strange mix of apprehension and delight. Maybe she would have straightened her spine and held her head up high.
Instead she bends at the waist and sighs softly as Isabela's long and graceful fingers card through her hair.
It is just like Luisa remembers. Better even. A tension she didn't even know was still there leaves her shoulders, a heaviness lifts off her heart.
They must look ridiculous, Luisa bent over, Isabela on her tiptoes. But for the first time in so long, Luisa feels like a little sister again. Vulnerable in all the good ways. She doesn't care what any of the villagers will think and Isabela doesn't seem to either.
Maybe Luisa wasn't the only one who'd missed this.
The hand leaves her head and when Luisa straightens and looks at her big sister there is a shine in Isa's eyes, a soft smile on her face.
"Let's go home, hermanita."
Luisa nods. The top of her head is warm. Almost as warm as her heart.
"Yes, hermana."

—Empanada | Camilo x fem!reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
request. [Anon] Hii, I’m here for a request :3 Can you write a fluff one-shot Camilo x fem reader where Camilo present the reader to the whole family and theirs reactions? Bye have a nice day!!
Tumblr media
Warnings. Ooc Madrigal family, Camilo is ooc(?), Agustin didn't get screen time, suggestive content(just camilo suggesting to call him papi), Fluff, cliché ending.
Notes. Hello Anon!! Thank you sm for the request! Sorry it took so long I got kind of busy with tests but here it is! I hope you have a nice day too:DD!!
Tumblr media
Camilo never found the time to introduce you to his family, Felix and Pepa's Anniversary celebration came around and it seems (un)luck settles with him.
Tumblr media
"Mami, Papi, this is (name), my partner" Camilo your lover introduced as you waved awkwardly towards the two adults.
Today, encanto was celebrating an event which you had no clue what was it about, although looking at the matching colours of the theme and the outfit the couple in front of you were wearing, you assumed it was their anniversary.
According to Camilo, you haven't met anyone from your partners side, well except for Antonio who practically acted as your son during your relationship, Camilo was a little jealous at first because your attention would go to his little brother more if he was in the same room as him, but the more it happens the more he thinks your an amazing example of a wife.
The duo in front of you seemed to be enthusiastic and lovable. I guess you know know where Camilo gets those from.
"I hope my son treats you right" the redhead–Pepa which she introduced as–told you honestly as she took your palms in her hands, a small smile on her face.
Her husband, Felix, was by her side sincerely nodding along with an arm on her waist, it was a sweet relationship, like the both of yours, your just more...introverted.
"He does" you started and starred happily at the both of them, your lips twitching upward unconsciously "you have a great son Mrs. Madrigal"
Suddenly, a call of a pair of names alerted the duo of their need of appearance, giving the both of you a smile "no need for honorifics, call me Tia if you would like so"
"Call me papa too!" Felix butted in as Camilo playfully scoffed at this "pa! (Name) probably doesn't want to-"
"Thank you so much Tia and papa, happy anniversary too" you told the both of them, Camilo looking at you dumbfoundedly as the couple in front of looked at you proudly.
"The pleasure is all ours"
"That ended well" you told the curly head beside you, a smile plastered on your features, Camilo on the other hand playfully pouted at you.
Crossing his arms at you "it didn't! How am I gonna live with you calling my father 'papa'?!" You laughed at him, patting his shoulder apologisingly "don't worry, I'm not, let a man have their fun"
"You should call me papi" Camilo smirked at you, while you looked at him bored out of your mind "I would rather not"
Not long after the conversation, a voice interrupted the both of you, directing your attention towards the crowd
"(name)!" A familiar voice shouted from the distance, you grinned at it and kneeled down, readying yourself for a force of impact.
"Tonito'! Hello!" You greeted and hugged the boy, the curly head giggling back at you while you squeezed him tightly before carrying him on your arm.
"How is my buddy going?" You grinned at him while he answered your question with the things he had done with Mirabel, which you pressumed who you will meet next.
Speaking of the devil, a curly head emerged from the crowd, panicking as her hair seems to be dishevelled, however, she seemed to perked up at Antonio's voice not too far from where she is standing, directing her attention to you and the boy happily chatting in your arms.
"Antonio, there you are, I was looking for you" she sighed in relief and Antonio looked clueless but shrugged her statement off.
He pointed at you with a smile on his face "I'm with (name)! By the way, (name) this is Mirabel, Mirabel this is (name)" he introduced the both of you, if you're asking where Camilo might be he is sitting on the floor, bored that you have just been introducing yourself to his family the whole day.
It's his fault that you just met them today.
"Pleasure to meet you" you grinned and placed Antonio down, shaking hands with the female madrigal, she complied and shook hands with you.
"Your Camilo's partner right? You know you should have someone better" she whispered at you jokingly, Camilo whining just below the two of you as Mirabel giggled at him.
"Please, he's the only one available" you joked back, the boy below you shooting you an offended expression, exaggerating it with a hand on his hand.
The both of you laughed at his expression while you calmly told him that your joking, Antonio, who now wanted nothing to do in the conversation, tugged Mirabels hand and waved a goodbye to you, wanting to join into the dancing in the center.
"We should go get food" you muttered to Camilo while sticking your hand out to him, helping him up to stand, he happily obliged, finally happy to spend time with you rather than listening to introductions.
"I heard Tia made some Empanada's!" The boy beside you excitedly told you as he unconsciously held your hand, dragging you along the food stall.
"I never tasted Tia's Empanada's before" you replied, now looking for the tray that stored the Empanada's.
Camilo frowned when he couldn't look for the food he excitedly wanted to taste, unfortunately for the both of you, the food seems to be out of stock, which made the both of you eat arepas instead.
"Arepas taste better anyway" you tempted to enlighten the situation as you realized how bummed out your partner was when the Empanada's were out.
Camilo pouted at you, but lightheartedly chuckled at your attempt at making him smile, although it was a bummer the both of you weren't able to munch on the Empanada's.
"Huh? (name)? Didn't know you were here" A once again familiar voice spoke to you, well you assumed spoke to you as the two of you looked upwards.
Camilo grumbled and visibly pouted at how somebody disturbed your quality time together, not to mention how another introduction will happen right infront of him.
"Luisa! Hey, how are you?" You smiled and fist bumped the taller female infront of you, the curly haired boy frowning in confusion at the interaction.
"I'm doing great! I also followed your advice! It's really fun to see a dandelion grow" Luisa Charmed in, the both of your now engaging in a deep conversation of who knows what.
Camilo on the other hand looked stunned, since when did the two of you meet? And a dandelion? Advice? Dude, how long is this friendship been going? How come he wasn't aware about it?
His thoughts were abruptly cut off by another voice pitching in the conversation.
"Isa! How are you doing today?" You greeted and hugged her back, Isabela smiling up at you, until her gaze landed on a lost child right beside you.
"Oh! This is my partner I was talking about" you introduced as Isabela frowned, Luisa congratulating the both of you of having a healthy relationship.
"You have horrible taste" Isabela calmly stated, although you couldn't identify who she was talking to as she faced the arepas in the counter.
"What-" "I'm not talking to you"
Camilo shut his mouth after he got cutted off, Ouch, what's up with Camilo Hate all of a sudden, You snickered at that while your lover shooted you a glare.
"Anyways, (name) you should teach me how to do flower crowns! I heard you know how to" Isabela excitedly told you, although you assumed she doesn't mean right now as people seems to be calling her.
"Sure, Whenever your free" you grinned while she happily nodded, before waving a goodbye, it was a short conversation but hey, it was an interaction.
Luisa on the other hand, was also needed for something, the piano you pressumed as she also waved a goodbye while running towards a direction to who knows what.
"I got fresh Empanada's" Julieta called out when she noticed the two of you near the food Bruno tagging along with a few rats with him, you grinned while Camilo's eyes sparkled with excitement, grabbing two Empanada's on the tray.
"Sorry I got it late, Agustin got chased by bees" she sighed at her husbands clumsiness, you waved her off, also grabbing an empanada on the tray.
"It's fine Tia, as long as Tio is okay" you smiled up at her.
"Aww sometimes I think your too nice for our Camilo"
Camilo could feel his heart shatter, I guess today really is hate on Camilo day, are you really out of his league? He thought he's the only one who thinks that.
"By the way, this is Bruno, I believe you haven't met him" Julieta Introduced as you nodded along lifting a hand up towards the boy.
"Hello, I'm (name) Camilo's partner" Bruno sort of looked stunned but softly smiled and shook you hand "I'm Bruno, but you probably already know that"
You smiled as your attention suddenly went to his rats, who were hiding in his ruana, Bruno realized this and hid them more, thinking you didn't want to see them "sorry- they are my friends, they always-" and was cut of by you.
"You should introduce me to them sometime, I would love to meet them" you grinned as Bruno starred at you at utter disbelief, his attention suddenly went to Camilo, who looked dumbstruck at what Julieta said earlier, but still listening in the conversation.
"Camilo, take care of them, she's a keeper"
"Oh my, its nice to finally meet you" a soft spoken voice slightly, caught your attention if it wasn't for Julieta looking further behind you, cutting off the telepathic conversation Camilo and Bruno were having
"Wait sorry, are we disturbing something here or?" Mariano, Dolores's partner apologised while Julieta politely shook her head.
"No, I'm afraid your not" she smiled before adding, holding both of yours and Camilo's shoulder by each hand "well, we'llleave the four of you to it, I have to find Agustin before he gets stings again"
"And I have to find Roberto too" Bruno added to Julieta's statement as you nodded in understanding.
The four of you bid your goodbyes, you mentally thinking why every encounter you engage on another one, however, you do not decide the plot of this story.
Once Julieta and Bruno took their leave, Dolores excitedly held both of your hands, she probably wanted to see you for so long but your paths couldn't cross with the things the both of you had to do.
"Hi, I'm Dolores, Camilo's sister and I want you to know that Camilo once peed thinking that you will reject him" she introduced, calmly stating an embarrassing moment like it didn't affect the person involved which by the way was now trying to prohibit his sister to tell more.
"Okay okay, I won't tell her more, But I want you to know is that my dear brother loves you dearly and would die to save you, me and Mariano have been trying to get the both of you together when we saw you play with the children with him"
Completely ignoring her word, Dolores continued embarrassing her brother more, but fortunately for Camilo, its hiss first time the whole day to hear someone say the both of you are meant to be together, like two peas in a pod.
Although the sweet moment didn't last long as abuela also approached the four of you, ah yes the final boss, it may not seem to be for others as abuela stopped being into 'perfection' after the fall of Casita, but to Camilo, getting Abuela's blessing is like winning the lottery.
"Dolores, if you may" She slightly told her, The girl beside you, nodding away and headed to the dance floor with Mariano, the both of them swaying to the music with smiles on her face, of course not before telling you to meet up with her right after.
You looked at Abuela a soft smile on your face, yes your partner may told his issues to you about her abuela before but then again, you understood her perspective but you don't encourage it either.
She softly smiled towards you to, then to Camilo "I'm happy for you Camilo" gently, she took her hand in hers, your partner stunned at what the older female said.
"Please take care of him as I couldn't do so" she softly told you, your eyes slightly blurred on you, it wasn't emotional oh dear no—you just know the history of those words that made it emotional.
You removed your hands from her hold, taking her own and smiled to her, Camilo on the sidelines looking at the both of you, still slightly stunned but very happy, more likely very happy at the next words you spoke.
"I will, always"

Pranks: Encantober Day 5
“Camilo,” Isabela’s voice holds the note of someone’s going to get up close and personal with a cactus.
“I didn’t do it!”
Isabela’s vines rush through Casita before they pull him free of his hiding spot. “You can’t say that before you even know what I’m going to say!”
“But I haven’t done anything!” A pointed glare. “Today,” he amends.
Isabela gestures and a vine prods his head up. “You put my bed on the roof! How’d you even get up there? I checked with Luisa but she doesn’t know and she wouldn’t pull pranks like that.”
Camilo gapes. “Me? How do you think it’s my fault!”
“You transform!”
He does so to escape her vines, shrinking into Antonio and then back to himself when he’s free. “Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I get Luisa’s strength! I can’t get your dumb bed on the roof!”
“It’s your fault, I know it!”
With a yelp, Camilo bolts as vines snap at his heels.
From behind a corner, Luisa claps a hand to her mouth to cover her snickers.
~~~
“Camilo!” Julieta stomps out of the kitchen waving a cooking spoon. “You switched the salt and sugar you cabrón! You ruined my empanadas! Agustín choked on his coffee!”
Camilo, still eating his breakfast at the table, squints at her. “I didn’t do anything, tía. I’m sitting here, eating!”
“You switched them before we got up, then!” She brandishes the spoon. “I should make you eat a spoonful of salt and see what you think then! Teach you to involve me in your pranks.” Still grumbling, Julieta heads for her room. Agustín follows, sending Camilo a glare over his shoulder.
“But I didn’t do it!” Breakfast abandoned, Camilo trails after them.
The voices fade up the stairs and the kitchen is blanketed in silence. Bruno slips in, peeking his head around the corner before knocking softly on the wood doorway and entering fully.
He carefully empties the salt and sugar bowls into separate pockets, before refilling the bowls with the correct ingredients. With a final glance to be sure he wasn’t seen; he fades into the shadows. Link to Encantober Collection: Here
HEADCANON: Dolores, Isabela and Luisa were close when they were children. Two older girls treated younger Luisa like a doll and their kinda experimental bunny as they tried out hairdos or first make-ups on her, and little Luisa loved it so much. They always said Luisa was their little doll princess. It changed over the years, and Luisa missed these times. Post-movie girls go back to that little forgotten tradition and try things on already adult Luisa and she loves it as much as she loved it being a few years old girl.
Agustín’s Birthday
IT’S OUR FAVORITE DILF’S BIRTHDAY!! A short one-shot of Agustín’s birthday. I had no clue what to title this. Shoutout to @sophiasi1172 and @enigmaticdoctorscully for the encouragement during my mental crisis. They really know how to bring the chaos and love. I appreciate them.
The sun peaked through the windows of the bedroom. Stretching every limb and rubbing his eyes, Agustín awoke from his slumber a little later than usual. He missed breakfast but planned on getting some once he went downstairs. Everyone was out of the house doing their regular chores. He did his final touches to his tie and vest before placing his glasses on the bridge of his nose. His hand touched the doorknob and he muttered, “Another beautiful day.” He pushed the door open ready for the day’s adventures.
Agustín walked into an empty kitchen where a few arepas sat on the counter. Agustín grabbed one, bit into it, and pondered his to-do list in his head. It was supposed to be a quiet day since it was his birthday and Father’s Day. He looked around the kitchen and thought about making something. Usually, he would not be allowed to go near the kitchen or even cook in it, but since no one was home, he might as well take advantage of it. Agustín decided to make some polvorosas for the family to enjoy upon coming home from their various activities. He laid out all of the ingredients and got to work. He was excited to do this for his family. They all worked so hard, from his wife, who cooked for the whole village, to his daughter, who carried the world on her back.
He continued his quest, enthralled by what he was doing. Lost in his world, he pulled the tray from the oven, and the smell filled the room. A smile came to his face, and he was pleased with his work. Agustín plated them nicely and set them out on the counter before leaving for town.
He walked through town, waving to various villagers. Agustín was known for his clumsiness at first but also for having a bright smile that lit up wherever he walked. The kind smile helped the clumsy outsider integrate smoothly into the village.
A small group of children played ball, and the ball landed at his feet. "Kick it, Señor Madrigal!" Agustín kicked it to one kid, who kicked it to another, passing it to another. The group of kids giggled as Agustín stumbled as they kept a good volley going, and one kid kicked it so hard that the ball flew through someone's open window. Agustín and the kids froze.
Being a responsible adult, Agustín lectured, "We should politely apologize and ask for the ball–." but was interrupted by a yelling Osvaldo. Agustín's eyes went wide, and he interjected, "BUT in this case, we should probably just…. RUN."
The kids and Gus scattered, running in different directions while giggling. Out of breath, Agustín stopped running, and he found himself in front of a flower shop. Agustín walked in, deciding to get some flowers for his girls.
The storekeeper waved at him, "Hola! Señor Agustín! Is Isabela alright?"
"Ay, si! I want to get the girls some flowers, but I want it to be a surprise," Agustín smiled, holding the petals of the marmalade bush in his hands.
"What can I get you today?"
"I'll take a bouquet of pink bromeliad flowers, a bundle of purple banana flowers, and an orchid.
I would also like the small cactus. They are Isa's favorite," Agustín grinned, pulling out his wallet.
He walked out of the shop with all sorts of flowers in tow as he hiked back to Casita. He opened the door and could faintly hear the piano playing, followed by a frustrated groan. He made his way to the doorway, where his wife and daughters stood around Luisa playing the piano. Mirabel held her accordion and Isa stood with her tiple.
"It has to be perfect, and you are not doing what I want you to do," Luisa argued.
"Luisa, we are doing our best," Mirabel sighed.
"Yeah, plus–," Isa started putting her tiple down.
Luisa's hand flew up to her forehead, "It's just I want this to be the best birthday surprise for Papí, and I don't know how long he is going to be gone."
"Before I walked back, I saw him at the flower shop, which is rude because I can get him whatever he needs," Isa bragged.
Julieta, lost in the polvorosa, piped in, "None of you made these? They are so delicious." Julieta examined her snack, poking, and smelling it before taking another savory bite.
Entertained by the conversation, Agustín chimed in, "What a sight to behold to have all my girls in one room on a Tuesday!" The girls turned around to see Agustín smiling, setting all the flowers on the table.
The girls flocked to him to embrace him in a giant hug. "Happy birthday Papí and Happy Father’s Day!" All the girls sang with their bright smiles.
"Ah, thank you, but I must ask what you are doing?"
Isa pulled back and interrogated, "Hold on, what are all those flowers doing here? I could have made you some, papí."
"Ay, mi flor, I got each of you flowers. Well for you Isa, I found your favorite type of cactus. But these are for you," Agustín chuckled, "I wanted it to be a surprise, so, of course, I couldn't ask you to make them. No hard feelings, ok?"
Isa flew in to hug her father. “I love you so much, Papí.”
Julieta took the last bite of the polvorosa, trying to savor every last bit of it, even going as far as to close her eyes as she chewed.
"Ay, mi amor, are they alright? I threw them together quickly," Agustín asked, grabbing her hand.
Julieta's jaw dropped, "You made these?"
Agustín nodded before Mirabel giggled, "She has been talking about them since she took a bite."
"A rave review from the renowned Chef Julieta Madrigal," Agustín boasted, "All the lessons rubbed off." He threw a wink at her and she blew him a kiss.
"I'll let the fact that you cooked in my kitchen under strict rules slide because those polvorosas were so damn good," Julieta announced.
The family broke into laughter, collecting themselves once Luisa asked, "Papí, why are you doing all of this? It's your birthday; we should be spoiling you, not you spoiling us."
"'I'll answer that once you answer my question. What are you all doing?"
"We all decided that we wanted to play a song for you with vocals from Mamí," Luisa confirmed, "We were getting in one last rehearsal so we can sing after dinner. Mamí made your favorite."
“Your other gift is coming later, querido,” Julieta purred, winking at Agustín who adjusted his tie, turning red at the thought.
“Mamí!” All the girls groaned, shaking their heads and rolling their eyes. Mirabel gagged before putting her head down on her accordion.
"Anyway!” Isa diverted, “Luisa got a little stressed out,"
Luisa grabbed her neck and blushed, "I just wanted it to be perfect for him."
"Remember what we talked about, that word 'perfect’," Mirabel interrupted.
Isa demanded, "Now, answer our question!”
Agustín giggled at her demand. He sat next to Luisa on the piano bench with the girls surrounding him. "I know it's my birthday and it’s been a quiet day today. I played futbol for the first time in ages and didn’t fall on my face. I was relaxed today but I wanted to do something for my four favorite ladies. You spend most of your days worrying about me, and I just wanted to show you how much I love you."
A smiling Julieta's hand rested on her chest, and the girls chirped, "Awww. We love you, Papí!"
All four of them clung to him in a group hug, giving him as much birthday love as they could.
Agustín held on to them, hoping the moment would never end, but curiosity got the best of him as he looked at each of his daughters and wife.
"Now, can I hear what you planned for me?" Agustín asked, smiling from ear to ear.
The girls rushed into formation with their instruments. Pride and excitement exuded from each of them. Agustín could help to have pride radiate from him. All four women standing before him had come so far in the last year, and he couldn't control the broad smile on his face.
"Ready?" Luisa counted her sisters off, "Uno, dos, tres– hit it!"
A Blessing And A Curse
[Luisa Madrigal loves her special gift, of course she does, but while she knows she’s meant to see it as a blessing there are times when it feels like nothing but a curse, especially when it comes to her friends. Feeling down and singled out, she turns to her mother and - as usual - Juli always knows the right thing to do.]
Wandering over to her little spot near the wall, the spot where she left her toys, Luisa sat down and sighed as she reached for her doll and brought it into her lap. Honestly, she didn’t want to play with her doll. She didn’t want to play with any of the toys her mamí let her bring with them. What she wanted to do was play with her friends like she used to, but things seemed to have changed since her gift ceremony the other week. It was like she scared them now, like they were worried they would get hurt if they played with her, but she would never hurt them. Well, never on purpose anyway and it made her feel sad to think some of them thought she would.
Yes, she was a little taller and stronger than she was before thanks to her special gift, but she still knew how to be gentle and she only needed to be big and strong when she was working. She was still the same Luisa inside.
Running a hand over her doll’s hair, she brought that same hand to her face a moment later to palm away the tear that ran down her cheek before she looked across the square at her mamí. She was still working her stall, Mira strapped to her chest with the little sling thing she made out of an old blanket, but the long line that had been there all day was shorter now and that normally meant she would soon be done and they could go home. She wanted to go home. She was ‘normal’ at home, nobody thought she was weird or they had to keep a little distance from her, and Isabela and Mira were way more fun than any of her annoying friends in town anyway.
Once she had sat and watched her mamí heal a couple more people, she got to her feet with her doll in hand and brushed a curl from her face with the other while making her way over to where she was standing. Instead of saying anything, she just wrapped her arms around her waist and laid her head on her stomach and a small smile graced her features when she felt her reach down and stroke her curls. “Hola, mi mariposa…” She heard her say in a gentle voice, prompting her to tilt her head back and look up at her. “Where are all your amigas?”
A shrug was her response. “I don’t know, mamí, they went away and they didn’t want me to go with them.”
Julieta frowned and, after checking to make sure no one was approaching her stall, set the plate of bunuelos in her hand down on the table and laid a hand on Mira’s back while crouching down to her daughter’s height. “I thought you were having fun with your amigas, Lu, I thought you were going to play ‘familias’ together, what happened?” She raised an eyebrow at her, giving her freckled cheek a tender stroke as she looked into her eyes.
Luisa looked down at her feet for a moment before looking at her once again and whispering, “Mi amigas are scared of me, mamí, they don’t want to be mi amigas or play games with me anymore because I’m too strong.”
“Is that what they said to you?”
“Catalina said I might break her cochecito if I pretend to be the mamí and that would make her sad.”
Julieta had to take a moment before responding, a moment to remember these were children they were talking about and they likely had no idea how much their words upset her little girl. If it were a grown adult singling her out for such a thing, refusing to let her play with their child, she would have no qualms about giving them a piece of her mind about it, but children had so much to learn. Of course, that didn’t make what they said to Luisa any better and she would be making them aware of how their actions made her feel when she saw them. “It can be so hard for people outside the familia to understand us and our special gifts, amor.” She said quietly.
“But they don’t have to stop being my amigas, mamí, I won’t hurt them.” Luisa’s bottom lip trembled.
“I know, I know,” Julieta soothed, wrapping an arm around her and pulling her close, letting her hand run up and down her back through her blouse as she hid her face in her shoulder. “If your amigas can’t see how kind and loving and graciosa you are, you don’t need them as your amigas. You still have us though and we all love you so much. Abuela loves you, papí and I love you, Isa and Mira love you, your tía and tíos love you and to say Dolores and Cami love you would be an understatement. You could never be too big or too strong for us.”
“Mamí, will I be too big or too strong when I’m old like tío Bruno?” Luisa inquired, pulling back from her.
Julieta failed to hold back a chuckle. “Not even then. You’re always going to me mi bebé, okay?”
Luisa nodded, the ache in her heart starting to hurt a little less. “Can I go and play with Mira over there?”
Looking down at her baby girl to see her gumming on one hand while using the other to hold onto her apron, Julieta smiled before giving Luisa a nod when she looked at her again. She got back to her feet and untied the sling carefully, holding Mira close as she laid the blanket down on the table before she turned to her daughter once more and handed Mira to her. Once she was certain she was holding her correctly, she smoothed a hand over her curls and leaned down to give her forehead a kiss. “You are the best hermana.” She murmured gently.
“Being big isn’t always a bad thing, mamí, not when it means I get to play with Mira.” Luisa laughed.
“Go and sit in the shade with her so she’s not in the sun,” Julieta instructed. “If you can keep her entertained until I’m done, I might take you to get some caramello before we go home for being such a wonderful helper.”
“Gracias!” Luisa gasped, her eyes widening with excitement.
When her little girl turned around and almost ran back to her spot with her hermanita perched on her hip, all Julieta could do was shake her head with a smile as she brought her hands to her hips. Both of her daughters were wonderful hermanas, but she had to say Luisa had always been the more hands on one out of them. She was always asking her and Gus if she could help change Mira’s pañal or feed her a bottle and they adored how gentle she was with her all the time. If she kept it up, no doubt Mirabel would grow up to love her almost as much as they did. The thought of that alone was enough to make her smile as an image appeared in her head.
Like she said herself moments ago, her being big was nothing for her to be sad or feel awkward about.
There was merely more of her to love and that was one thing she would never stop reminding her of.
Absolutely never.
November 14
(Y’all really thought I wasn’t gonna do Luisa’s birthday? SIKE! No matter how late it is, I get it DONE. In my defense, I kind of suffered from writers’ block after writing Felix’s birthday piece, my entire brain was just drawing a blank. That is, until I talked to a friend of mine and she helps me out, and I’m glad for that. So sit back and enjoy Luisa’s birthday one-shot! Feliz cumpleaños, my buff beautiful queen!)
For Luisa’s birthday, there was one thing she really wanted more than anything.
And Isabela, Mirabel, and Dolores were insistent on giving it to her.
💙💖
“Come on, Luisa!” Isabela chirped as she grabbed Luisa’s big, muscular arm, dragging her to the door. “We’re gonna be late. I already booked your appointment!”
“Where are we going?” Luisa asked.
“You’ll see soon,” Isabela promised. “It’s a surprise, for your birthday, remember?”
“Oh right”, Luisa giggled. “Well, I can tell I’m going to like this surprise.”
“You sure will, hermanita,” Isabela agreed. “You know, no matter how big and strong you are, you will always be my hermanita!”
Luisa smiled.
“And my primita,” Dolores piped up.
“Well, at least you’re my big sister.” Mirabel smiled up at her, Camilo trailing behind her.
“Aww, thanks you all,” Luisa said. “Thanks a lot.”
“You’re welcome,” they all said in unison.
Camilo meanwhile, poured in dissatisfaction. “Why don’t I get to go to the s—“
“Shhh!” Mirabel covered his lips angrily, which didn’t make him any happier. Pulling him aside, she whispered to him gently, “I promise we’ll let you go another time, but for now, this is a girls’ day out. Understand?”
“I know, but—“
“Bye Camilo!” Mirabel cupped his face and kissed him on the cheek. “Te amo.” She smiled at him before running up to Luisa and grabbing her hand. “Let’s go, chicas!”
They hurried out the door, on their way to the surprise.
“Where are we going?” Luisa asked. The rest of the granddaughters giggled, but nobody answered her question. Luisa smiled awkwardly.
“So Luisa, how does it feel to not be a teenager anymore?” Mirabel changed the subject, before putting on a pouty face. “The nerve of you to leave me behind, now I’m all alone!”
Luisa laughed. “Well, I’ve only been twenty for like a day, so I can’t say it feels all that different. Though if you had to say, it does feel somewhat…exhilarating? Exciting? To imagine how many experiences I still have to look forward to and how much of my life I still have to live. Being a teenager was fun while it lasted, but now I’m a real adult and I gotta say, I think I’m gonna like it.”
“I think you’re gonna like it too, Luisa.” Dolores wagged a finger. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you that it’s no amusement park.”
“Oh, I know,” Luisa listened to her older prima. “But I have you and your prima-hermana to help me through the tough times.” She hugged Mirabel close to her. “And I have Mirabel too.”
Happy to feel needed, Mirabel nuzzled back.
“We’re almost here!” Isabela stated, before she arrived at a small building. “Close your eyes!”
The three girls closed their eyes, and Isabela giggled and rolled her own.
“Not you two, tontas!”
“Oh.” Mirabel and Dolores opened their eyes. Luisa kept hers shut.
The three of them led Luisa through the door, and let her walk into the room.
“Now open!”
When Luisa opened her eyes, she gasped.
“You…I can’t believe you brought me here!” She said happily.
“Of course, mi querida prima!” Dolores affirmed. “You deserve to feel special, beautiful, and feminine, just like the rest of us!”
Luisa could cry tears of joy. She always wanted to go to a salon, but with all the work she had to do, she couldn’t find the time to. But now that she was able to relax—thanks to Mirabel and Antonio’s donkeys—she was able to fulfill a dream that she had long since forgotten she had. But Isabela remembered, and she couldn’t be happier.
Luisa scooped up her sisters and cousin(who was pretty much like a sister anyway) in a great big hug, but still careful not to crush their torsos. Other women were looking, eyeing the large-framed girl In confusion, but thankfully not judgement, with some of them even smiling, but she didn’t care. She was so elated and so, so grateful.
Kissing each of their heads before putting them down, she rubbed the back of her head awkwardly. “Sorry, I guess I just—“
“No, no!” Dolores corrected.
“No, don’t you dare apologize, Luisa, we’re happy you’re happy to come here!” Mirabel said. “Now let’s go!”
“Oh, okay, thank you!” Luisa said.
“You’re welcome, sis,” Isabela replied.
“So, do you want a manicure and pedicure first, or a new hairstyle?” Mirabel asked.
“I think a manicure,” Luisa responded. “What about you?”
“Sweet, me too!” Mirabel chirped with glee.
Isabela shrugged. “Dolores and I would rather get our hair styled, isn’t that right, Lola?”
Dolores nodded. She and her prima-hermana were like twins, they could read each other’s mind and were so much alike. They should probably start calling each other primas-gemelas.
“Awesome, take your time,” Luisa said as the primas-hermanas were lead away by a hairdresser. She and Mirabel met up with a manicurist and sat down in these big, soft chairs that made Luisa feel so relaxed. In a good way of course.
“What color do you want?” The manicurist, Sabrina, asked.
“Hmm, probably pink. No, definitely pink. Pink is my favorite color.”
“I’ll have green,” Mirabel said to her manicurist, Beatriz.
As their feet were placed in the water, Luisa tried not to giggle at how the bubbles tickled her soles and skin. She turned to Mirabel, who looked as relaxed as ever with her eyes closed, as if she was used to this(which she was, she and Dolores came here often). Mirabel opened her eyes to smile at her, and she realized that her younger sister was just pretending not to have been looking her way.
“You’re adorable when you giggle, Luisa.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome!”
The next part was even harder. Sabrina lifted Luisa’s feet out of the water and began massaging them. Luisa had to fight the urge not to writhe. She tried her damndest to imitate Mirabel, to no such luck.
Luisa giggled again.
Sabrina smiled up at her. “First time?” She said, before looking back at Luisa’s feet and holding them tighter—but not too much tighter—in place.
“Can you tell?”
“Pretty much. But it’s okay. My niece was like this too, and she’s fifteen.”
“That’s interesting.” Luisa said, happy to engage in small talk with the woman. She was a pretty lady, with auburn hair, soft hazel eyes that sparkled when she spoke of her Cristobela, whom she loved like a younger sister, skin the color of mahogany, and red lips that reminded her of Dolores’ only not really, because Dolores was her cousin, and these lips made Luisa feel—
Fuck. Focus on the manicure.
“A-ah…that’s nice to know!” Luisa said, hoping not to sound dismissive when Sabrina spoke of Cristobela. She remembered the hilarious stories Mirabel and Dolores—and sometimes Camilo, if he was lucky enough to not be caught shapeshifting—told of the ladies at the salon who had the most exciting stories and gossip to share. Something she knew her sister and cousins would like. According to Dolores, the salon workers weren’t just service, they were friends. Still, it wasn’t a good idea to cross their boundaries. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t converse with them to an extent.
“It is,” Sabrina was saying, and Luisa tried not to focus on her dimples when she smiled or laughed. “And now she just can’t get enough.”
“Do you think we’d get along if we met?” Luisa asked as Sabrina put cotton balls between each of her toes. She had forgotten how squeamish she felt from how engrossed in conversation she was with Sabrina.
“Oh sure!” Sabrina said. “She really admires you a lot, you know.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, she does! Not just for your strength, but for your kindness and empathy as well. I should introduce you to each other someday.”
“That would be great,” Luisa said with a smile.
“You know,” Sabrina said with a twinkle in her eye as she put coating over Luisa’s toenails. “I think she’d love to meet Mirabel as well.”
Luisa turned to Mirabel, who was laughing at something Beatriz was telling her.
“I guess so.” Luisa agreed.
💙💖
Meanwhile, Isabela and Dolores were sitting to get their hair styled.
“Well, if it isn’t my girl Dolores!” Exclaimed a lady whom Dolores instantly recognized as the mother of her friend Lili. “How you doin’?”
“Hi, Ofelia, I’m doing good!” Dolores smiled. “What about you, how’s Lili?”
“I’m awesome, querida, and she’s doing better than ever! Now, what hairstyle do you want today?”
“Hmmm,” Dolores flipped through the catalogue until she found a hairstyle that she liked, and that fit her hair type too. “How about Bantu knots? Please?”
“I love it!” Ofelia approved. As she got to work shampooing Dolores’ hair, she said “You know, mi hija Lili got this same hairstyle a while ago too, you should have seen her, she looked like a queen!”
“I’m sure she did,” Dolores said.
“I’m sure you two would look very much alike!”
Dolores closed her eyes. She quite liked the feeling of Ofelia doing her hair and making it look all pretty and soft. And Ofelia always thought of Dolores as her favorite customer, on top of her being her daughter’s friend and her generally friendly and sweet attitude. Dolores normally didn’t like talking at the salon, preferring to be calm and quiet instead. But for Ofelia she made an exception.
Next to her, she heard Isabela engaging in cheerful chatter with Diana, her hair stylist, the two making sure not to be too loud on account of the magical hearing girl sitting right next to them. And she could hear Luisa struggling to sit still as she giggled, as well as her heart beating. Could that mean—
Before she could even think about that, she heard a sneering voice and had to resist the urge to stay calm. It was the same voice she has been hearing for years.
“Primas-hermanas,” the voice sneered. “Long time no see.”
Dolores and Isabela sighed. “Juana.”
Juana sat down. Unfortunately, right next to Dolores. “I had a feeling I’d see you here,” she said as Dolores flipped through the catalogue, suddenly finding it very, very interesting. Much more interesting than whatever was being spewed out of Juana’s mouth. “Just not with Lucinda and Isabel.”
“You mean Luisa and Isabela,”
Dolores seethed through gritted teeth.
“Whatever.” Juana rolled her eyes. “Same difference.”
“I am right here ya know,” Isabela said on the other side of her prima-hermana. “Like, I’m right here and within earshot. I can hear everything you’re saying, you know that, right?”
“So what hairstyle are you getting, Lola?” Juana pressed, ignoring Isabela.
“Umm—“
But Dolores never got to finish her sentence before Juana snatched the catalogue from her.
The only reason Dolores didn’t reach to the side, snatch the catalogue back, and then hit Juana upside the head with it was Ofelia doing her hair. And she did not want to get hurt. More importantly, she did not want Juana to get hurt. Because she certainly would get hurt. And then she would learn her lesson.
Instead, she chose for a less…hands-on approach.
“That’s mine,” she stated flatly.
“It’s not yours, it belongs to the salon.” Juana shrugged.
“I was reading that,” Dolores said as if it were a threat.
“Well you’re not reading it now so,” Juana shrugged again, letting out an innocent chirp.
“Don’t start beef with me today, Juana,” Dolores warned. “It is mi prima’s birthday, and I am not about to let you ruin it.”
“Oh? Well then, tell her I said happy birthday!” Juana said genuinely.
Dolores snorted.
“What?”
Silence.
“Oh, so you’re not gonna tell her? Really? Are you that petty?”
Dolores still didn’t answer. And she was this close to punching Juana in the face if she kept running those lips.
“Wow.” Juana leaned back in her seat as she continued to flip through the magazine. Dolores closed her eyes and tried her hardest to ignore her, but to no avail.
“You know, I have the same birthday as your sister.”
“Cousin.”
“Whatever. I can’t wait to go home and celebrate my birthday party with all my friends and family, especially my cousin. She’s like a sister to me, you know? And we’ll have cake and music and dancing, my mom also bought a really pretty dress for me to wear and—“
“Oh, are you still talking?” Dolores cut off, clutching her nose. “That must be why it stinks in here. Also, I forgot when I cared.” She heard Ofelia let out a slight chuckle and was grateful.
Juana shut up after that.
As time went by, Dolores’ and Isabela’s hair was finished, Isabela was rocking a cute half-up half-down style with part of her hair being in two buns on either side of her head. Her hair was also much more wavy and bouncy, and not to mention silky and shiny.
“And you’re good to go!” Ofelia told Dolores as she rose up from her chair.
“Wow!” Dolores said as she admired her ‘do in the mirror. “I look gorgeous!”
“You sure do!” Ofelia agreed. “Just like my daughter.”
Dolores turned around to give Ofelia a hug. “Thank you so much, Ofelia,” she said. “I really like this.”
“Anytime, bebita.” Ofelia replied warmly, returning the hug.
Juana snorted and glared at Dolores’ reflection in the mirror from where she sat. She would never look as cute as Dolores did in her hairstyle, no matter what she did. She had half a mind to ask for Bantu knots herself, but it was too late for that.
Isabela was also ready. “Oh, Dolores, your hair looks so cute!”
“Wow, really, thank you!”
“How do you like mine?” Isabela asked before flexing.
“It’s perfect!”
“Thank you!” Isabela grinned, then giggled. It wasn’t long before Luisa and Mirabel came over.
“We got manicures!” Luisa said, showing off hers.
“And pedicures too!” Mirabel added.
“Wow, so lovely!” Dolores said, turning to Isabela. “I guess it’s our turn, no?”
“You bet, sis!” Isabela agreed.
But as Mirabel and Luisa were sitting down to get their hair done, Juana felt the need, for some reason, to speak up again.
“Hey Luisa, happy birthday.”
“Thanks,” Luisa said.
“Did you know that it’s my birthday too?” Juana said.
“I did not actually, but happy birthday!”
“Thanks,” Juana giggled. “I can’t wait to go home and throw a big party with all of my—“
“We heard you say that already, Juana.” Isabela forced a fake smile on her face as she curtly interrupted the girl who made her life a living hell since they were toddlers. “Knock it off.”
“Umm, I wasn’t talking to you, Isa, I was talking to the birthday girl. So if you don’t mind…” She turned her attention back to Luisa. “I’m sure your hair will look magnificent, querida. Much more than the primas-hermanas’.”
Dolores groaned. “Juana, why don’t you just cut it out and stop having an attitude towards us?! I’m telling you already, it is Luisa’s birthday and we are trying to have fun, without you! We are not going to start this crap today!”
“Once again!” Juana turned to them, in the process, messing up her hairdresser Rafaela’s job. Rafaela raised her hands in irritation at the young women, hissing her teeth, but Juana did not care. “I was not talking to you! I was talking to Luisa!”
“Umm, is everything okay?” Ofelia said, making her way back over. She had been relaxing on a break, enjoying a bowl of nuts with a cup of water. But now she was taking a break from that break just to see what was going on.
“Okay, but you always do this!” Dolores spat back. “You’re always showing up where you weren’t invited, intentionally aggravating me and Isabela when we’re just minding our business, talking shit about us to our face, and trying to cause drama! Can’t you just leave us alone for one minute and stop being so annoying!”
“It’s not my fault you’re so easy to rile up, primas-hermanas,” Juana said with an eye roll and a grin. “I came to the salon to get my hair and nails done for my birthday party tonight. Is that so much of an issue to you? Last time I checked, you don’t own the place. I can go wherever I like. Maybe not everything concerns you.”
“Literally the moment you walked in here,” Isabela seethed. “The very first thing you did was instigate conflict between us and you! And you expect us to do nothing about it? To not defend ourselves?”
“And not to mention you kept talking to us even when we told you to shut up!” Dolores barked back, in defense of Isa. “But go on about how ‘not everything is about us’.”
“You know what, Dolores and Isabela?” Juana spat, pointing at them. “You two think you’re so much better than me because—“
“Umm, señorita, you still have your hair to do, take a seat, please.”
“Yeah, do as she says.” Isabela glared.
Juana rolled her eyes and sat down.
“Anyway, where were we?” Isabela said to Dolores.
“Nails.”
“Oh, right.”
They went back to doing their hair and nails, although it was still fun, it couldn’t be denied that Juana had severely spoiled the fun for all four girls, not just the two she had set out to antagonize.
“Well, it’s time to go, we should be heading,” Mirabel told the girls.
“Yeah, you should,” Juana still sneered. “Bye, primas-hermanas.”
The girls left without saying a word to Juana.
“We’ll come back another time,” Dolores said to the woman who ran the salon. Said woman, Andrea, merely nodded her head sadly as they left.
💙💖
“I’m so sorry that girl ruined your birthday, Luisa,” Dolores said, a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. “It was supposed to be our special girls’ night out, and she ruined it. I just couldn’t stay.”
“It’s cool,” Luisa said. “We can go later or another day.”
“Yeah,” Dolores agreed solemnly.
A pause.
“Eeergh, I can’t BELIEVE how annoying that Juana girl is!” Isabela screamed in fury, hands clenching in rage. “I’d like to…urrrgh!”
“What is even her issue with you two anyway?” Mirabel asked the primas-hermanas. “Like, why does she hate you both?”
“She’s been like this with us ever since we were three years old,” Dolores said. “Yes, that’s right, literally three! I still remember like it was yesterday. Her stealing Isabela’s sleeping back during naptime and refusing to give it back.”
“She’s constantly making fun of the fact that we’re close with each other and call each other sisters,” Isabela said. “Even though it’s frankly none of her business. And since we were little she used to spread rumors about us and try to keep us apart. Sometimes she’d try to befriend one of us and badmouth the other, basically try to turn us against each other. Like that’s ever gonna happen.” Dolores gave a faint smile when Isabela said that. “She even said once that we think we’re better than her because we’re so close to each other and don’t like her. She is such a self-centered diva, it’s insane.”
“Wow,” Mirabel said, taking it all in.
“Tell me about it,” Isabela said as she shook her head. “She needs to get a life. And some friends.”
“Yeah,” Dolores agreed quietly. “She clearly doesn’t have any.”
“What do you mean?” Luisa asked.
“Just that I seldom if ever see her hanging out with anyone, whether a group of girls or just one girl. Maybe if she actually had friends the way Isabela and I do, not counting each other, of course,” Isabela gave a faint smile when Dolores said that. “She wouldn’t be so preoccupied with trying to destroy our friendship. Hm!”
“I’m so sorry you have to put up with a catty woman like her,” Mirabel said sincerely, linking arms with Dolores. “You don’t deserve that. Not even you, Isabela.”
Isabela gave her a funny look, and Mirabel smirked.
“But oh well, that’s enough about her, let’s not waste our breath talking about Juana when we have your birthday to look forward to!” Dolores turned to her prima. “You wanna go to the amusement park tonight, Luisa?”
“I’d love to!” Luisa affirmed. It had been ages since she went inside the amusement park kept secret inside her room. But maybe it was a good thing, what with her finally being able to relax and have fun and all.
“Yay!” Mirabel cheered. “That’s so awesome! It would be like a sleepover, but even better!”
“You’re damn right it would!” Isabela agreed.
Continuing to talk as they made their way back to Casita, they just about almost entered the door when Camilo came running up to them.
“Luisa!” Camilo cried out in fear, grabbing her hand. “It’s Belinda! She needs help! Please!”
Luisa gasped. She could never miss the chance to help one of her favorite donkey pals in a moment of need.
“Ugh, Camilo, we just got back from the salon. Can’t you see that it’s her birthday?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, happy birthday Luisa!”
Isabela rolled her eyes.
“Come on, Isabela, don’t worry, I promise it’ll only be a minute.”
“Thank you Luisa!” Camilo said. “Oh, and Dolores, love the hair! You look super pretty. Come on!” He yanked Luisa’s hand and they fled.
“Uh, thanks?” Dolores said awkwardly.
Isabela huffed. “He’s just gonna pretend like I don’t exist,” she snarked, flipping her hair. “But anyway…”
As Luisa ran away with Camilo, a giddy and exited Isabela, Dolores, and Mirabel quickly scampered inside the Casita, where the rest of the family was waiting for them.
“Are you ready?” Julieta asked her daughters and niece.
“We were born ready,” Mirabel said, a grin on her face and a glimmer in her eye.
After taking care of the donkey, Luisa went back inside through the front door of Casita, as somehow, Camilo was nowhere to be seen.
But when she turned the knob and stepped inside, she was not expecting this.
A thousand eggs were instantly hurled Luisa’s way, and Luisa screamed and covered her face with her hands, to no avail, as her entire body—though not her hair, fortunately, as Mirabel had instructed—was pelted with running yellow yolk.
She looked up to see her family, laughing joyfully at her shocked, but pleased expression.
“Cumpleaños feliz, te deseamos a ti, feliz cumpleaños a Luisa, feliz cumpleaños a ti! Que los cumpla feliz, que los vuelva a cumplir, que los siga cumpliendo, hasta el año tres mil! FELIZ CUMPLE, LUISA! WHOOO!”
Luisa only laughed. “You all are just terrible!” She screamed. “I’m kidding, y’all are the best. And I see what you did there, Camilo.”
Camilo beamed with pride, standing up straight for what was probably the first time in his life.
As the family all got together and surrounded Luisa with hugs and kisses, Luisa had never felt more grateful for her family in her life.
She was so happy to celebrate her twentieth birthday with them.
“Oh, come on!” Mirabel dragged Luisa to the chair at the head of the table, normally Abuela’s chair, unless it was your birthday, and sat her down in it.
Felix and Pepa brought out the cake, as Julieta and Agustin kissed Luisa on both sides of her face.
“My little baby all grown up,” Agustin was stammering, crying tears of joy and wiping at his face with a napkin. “Once a cute little teenager, now a beautiful young woman.”
“Aye Agustin,” Julieta said, hugging her husband delicately. “Make a wish, mija, and blow out the candles.”
Luisa closed her eyes and silently wished that every birthday following this one would be as good as it was today.
Then she blew out the candles, and the entire family cheered.
The End
