Just had a useless epiphany
Vecna refusing to give up on pursuing Max, even though he knew she had a whole squad of people, including the one person who could kill him (El), ready to defend her
vs.
Dracula refusing to give up on pursuing Lucy, even though he knew that she had a suitor squad and many others, including someone he literally ran away from (Mina), ready to defend her

i'm suddenly overwhelmed with feelings about how entrapta managed to make a friend on an island designed to suck away your willpower, called out for her as soon as she snapped out of the depths of its influence, and then told that friend she'd come back to this island for her eventually.
like. damn. i rly wish that robot had showed up in the season finale tbh.

damn this is a lot.
inuyasha doesn’t want koga to leave, even though koga is his “competition” and is a “wimpy wolf.” obviously this is exacerbated by the fact that kikyo just “left” for real, but the fact that the feeling exists at all is noteworthy. deep down, he really does like koga and care about him. he doesn’t want koga to be another person he cares about who is no longer with him.
and...the feeling is clearly mutual. koga doesn’t enjoy seeing inuyasha all depressed and withdrawn, even though this would technically be a great opportunity to flirt with kagome; inuyasha doesn’t really have the energy or motivation to protest. furthermore, koga bothers to say goodbye to inuyasha personally, even though he could have just left after telling kagome. at this point, koga finds no satisfaction in provoking inuyasha if inuyasha doesn’t actually react, so he tries to prod him just enough to get something out of him--a momentary distraction from grief. this isn’t the first time that koga has seemed unsettled by inuyasha being all “gloomy” either. put simply, he doesn’t derive any enjoyment from that anymore.
not sure if this is just a translation quirk, but koga saying, “it looks like all we can do [to get inuyasha back to normal]” is significant in itself. koga considers himself part of the group that wants inuyasha to be happy and himself (just as inuyasha considers koga part of the group that he wants around). koga knows that he can only do so much on his own, and he knows that kagome would be the best person to help inuyasha, so he encourages that.
this is all pretty obvious, i know, but still, interesting to consider how much development koga and inuyasha have had together.

the visuals for haggar remembering her son and alfor remembering his daughter (because it was from his perspective) have a lot of...interesting parallels.
the most striking is how haggar’s memories begin with lotor as a baby, crying, all alone, whereas alfor’s memories end with allura as a baby, laughing, with alfor. moreover, haggar’s memories are in complete darkness, whereas alfor’s are provided with some light by the sparkles. the music is similar as well, but in haggar’s case, it gives the impression of regret rather than remembrance.
the rest of the parallels are less obvious.
allura runs through memories to say goodbye to her father, while haggar runs through darkness to say hello to her son.
allura is shown to be happy with her father, whereas lotor is shown to be distant without his mother. lotor’s growing eyes emphasize how he’s impossible to connect with.
in the end, allura does reach her father to say goodbye to him, but haggar never reaches lotor.
she has never reached him, and now it might be too late.

btw just a little misconception that i want to correct:
80′s romelle and allura were not cousins in the way that a lot of people seem to think. allura personally refers to romelle as her cousin, but more specifically, as her “distant cousin” from a “sister planet.”
originally, the first king of arus had two sons, one of which was ~evil and sent to pollux, wherein he created his ~evil kingdom. allura is part of arus’ royal family, descended from the good son, and romelle is part of pollux’s royal family, descended from the bad son. they don’t give specific numbers (i just rewatched the scene to check), but i’m guessing it’s been quite a few generations since that divergence, considering that allura referred to this story as a “legend” and arus is shown to be a well-established planet.
their resemblance was emphasized more to highlight that arusians and polluxians descended from the same people, and thus fighting each other was pointless, rather than to highlight that they’re literally first cousins.

when lilith said that eda had no attachments, it struck me as odd. even before luz showed up, eda had king, owlbert, and hooty, whom she loved dearly and openly. lilith must have known about owlbert and saw him every time eda had her staff, and saw king following eda around all the time. it would be understandable if she’d dismissed hooty as a home security system/monstrosity since that was the only capacity in which lilith herself knew him, but it’s interesting that she disregarded king and owlbert. eda wasn’t some loner who oh-so-secretly cared about certain people; she had friends whom she hung out with and lived with and laughed with and loved. yet lilith didn’t notice this. because none of them are fellow witches? because they’re not blood-relations? because they’re eda’s “inferiors”?
even with luz, lilith perceived her as eda’s “pet” and was visibly shocked at how much eda cared. it’s as if she expected eda to be just annoyed enough to show up and fight to get her pet back, but not angry enough to go all out with her powers as she would to protect a person she really cared about.
whether she truly knew her sister when they were kids or not, lilith doesn’t know eda now. if anyone lacks attachments, it’s lilith, whose only “friend” is her sister whom she cursed and barely talks to anymore. lilith is supposedly amity’s mentor but barely interacts with her and exploits her when she does, and isn’t seen interacting positively/respectfully with anyone else. she’s noticeably rude to those who serve/follow her. she thinks she’s better than all of them and she’s so upset thinking that eda might perceive her in the same way.
after her “crafty” win over eda, lilith said that eda was with her real family now--
--but lilith had actually taken her away from her real family. the family that loved and understood her. the family that wanted to help her, not control her like both lilith and belos wanted to do.
of course luz is important and brought light into eda’s life, but eda wasn’t alone before luz. eda had found a family of her own after lilith betrayed her and was happy that way.
on some level, lilith clearly values biological family over found family, but she also values friendships between “equals” over friendships between an “inferior” and a “superior.” if eda had befriended another powerful witch, i don’t think lilith would have been so quick to dismiss that witch as irrelevant to eda. it’s because eda’s found family consisted of non-witches that lilith so easily ignored their significance to eda. she did notice that luz was special, but only to the extent of being...a favorite pet, not a beloved person--because how could one’s “inferior” be treated as one’s equal as a friend? essentially, in lilith’s hierarchy, the most important attachment is biological family, acceptable attachments are equals/fellow witches, and frivolous attachments are inferiors/pets. it’s no wonder she values control and power over love and understanding if this is how she values others.
lilith loves eda, but she loves power and control even more. so here we are.

like many others, i get strong ASD/ADHD vibes from this episode. neither condition is “curable”, despite the desperate efforts of many parents “burdened” with such children; it’s part of who they are, and it can’t just be “cut out.” both conditions can be made manageable with strategies, accommodations, certain evidence-based treatment, etc. yet many desperate parents resort to useless, harmful, self-serving treatments sold by scammers that promise a return to “normalcy.” both groups of people tend to be dismissed and ignored when discussing their own symptoms and issues and solutions, which leads to feeling ashamed and masking.
obviously there are major differences, such as that people develop signs of ASD/ADHD at younger ages and it’s not something that can be done to you, but regardless, the similarities are strong. i love that topics like these are being explored in a kid’s show so kids might be able to identify with it and better advocate for themselves. if your parent loves you, then they should love all of you, and that’s what every child deserves.

“hooty’s moving castle” (1x06)-->”enchanting grom fight” (1x16)
amity sure loves to stare out that window, huh? but in HMC, she seemed resigned and apathetic, just going through the motions of being friends with people she didn’t even like. in EGF, after she and luz danced and saved the day, she looked out the window with longing--and you can’t long for something if you’ve already abandoned all hope. even though she isn’t happy in either scene, at least she wants something in EGF--or rather, at least she lets herself want something.
in EGF, she told luz that she admired her fearlessness, but luz is fearful--she just does things even if she’s scared of them. it wasn’t that the monster didn’t have any fears of luz to prey upon--it was that luz was willing to face them for her friend’s sake. luz is brave, and i think that’s what amity really admires about her. amity was brave enough to write the letter and bring it to school and not completely destroy it once she decided against giving it to luz. who knows what she’ll be brave enough to do next?

one of my favorite tropes is a villain who truly loves someone but not enough to change their mind and god I hope they’re going that route with Belos and his brother (?? if other theories are correct). it almost happened with Lilith but she pulled through in the end—so what if she didn’t?

damn that’s brutal but she’s got a point. it was rly sad to hear scorpia mention things like catra hating her singing discouraging her from thinking she even could or should--little things that just deepened scorpia self-doubt and chipped away at her fragile self-esteem. when scorpia told catra that she was a bad friend, she wasn’t wrong. catra can be a good friend, and can be a better person, and can do the right thing--but she wasn’t like that with scorpia.
that said, scorpia did have a true friend before this, even though she didn’t recognize it at the time--entrapta, the princess that everyone else had assumed only cared about tech, including perfuma. funny how that works, huh?
basically, people are pretty complex, and they might be good for one person but not good for another.
